My Mother Essay

Mother is the foundation of a family. Mother is the one who brought us to see this beautiful world. It's a single word with thousands of emotions. Mother is called by different names in different languages like Maa in Hindi and Bengali, Amma in Tamil and Malayalam, Bha in Gujarati, Aaiy in Marathi, Talli in Telugu, Thayi in Kannada. Here are a few sample essays on "my mother".

100 Words Essay on My Mother

200 words essay on my mother, 500 words essay on my mother, my role model.

  • The Greatness of Mother's Love

My Mother Essay

My mother is a very important person and an inspiration in my life. She is the world to me. She is my first teacher. Every good habit I have is just because of her teachings. My mother is my constant motivator. Whenever I fail to perform, she is alone to stand and encourage me.

Whenever I am lost, my mother is the only one to bring me to the right path. There are situations where she is not physically present to guide, but her teachings always act as a guiding light. It is well said that "Life doesn't come with a manual; it comes with a mother." I wonder how appropriate this line is! When a child is born, it's the mother who understands the most about what to teach to her child and what not.

"God couldn't be everywhere, so he created mothers." A mother is a person whom the child knows from the womb itself. Nobody on this Earth knows a child better than their mother. Everybody on this Earth can harm a child except the mother. She knows what, when, why, how, and everything about her child. A mother can play all the roles of a child, from being a feeder to being a superhero. Nothing is challenging for her. Home is never a home where there is no mother.

Mother: Creation of God

She is the most beautiful creation of God. It is said that if a child doesn't have a father, the mother can do anything for the survival of her children, but if a child doesn't have a mother, life never remains easy for the child. Only a mother gives selfless love to her child; she can sleep hungry but never let her child sleep hungry.

My mother is my superhero. I always get surprised to see her being the first one to wake in the morning and the last one to sleep in the night, still with the same smile and zero complaints. How can a person remain so cheerful throughout? She is the one to teach that, however hard it may be, the day there will always be a beautiful morning waiting for you when you open your eyes.

Mother is the one who plays and handles all her relationships well, from being a daughter herself, being a sister, being a wife, being a daughter-in-law, being a sister-in-law to being a mother and then grandmother. We keep growing up throughout but for a mother, a child is always a child, regardless of age you become. She is the most powerful creature in this Universe. She can be a gentle wind, and at the same time, she can be a cyclone to a hurricane if someone tries to harm her child.

My mother is my inspiration and my role model. I believe nobody in this world can understand me more than her. She can read through and figure out what's going on in my mind. How can someone be so exact in reading someone's mind? She gets up at 5 a.m in the morning and prepares breakfast and lunch, never forgetting about anybody's choices. She then packs it for everybody on it. When we return, we see her working and arranging things with the same enthusiasm and smile she had in the morning. I again wonder how someone can be without complaining about something. I see her always having a solution handy to almost all the problems that we share with her.

"Mother's love is the fuel that boosts your willingness."

The Greatness of Mother's Love

There is a famous story about Albert Einstein's mother. It was said that Albert was not able to read when he was in elementary school. So one fine day, a teacher sends a note to his mother that they would not be able to teach her child as her child was too dumb to teach anything. Tears began rolling in her eyes when she read it to her son. She read that since her child was so smart, the teachers would no longer be able to teach him. Then she bought books for him and started teaching him all by herself, and today everything is history. Only a mother can give wings to her child's dreams.

We have often seen children sending their aged mothers to old age homes but have never seen a mother sending her child to an orphanage. It is very painful to see such people sending their source of existence to suffer till they live. We have seen mothers leaving their well-paid jobs to see their children grow, to teach good things to their children. Nobody on this Earth can ever repay a mother's sacrifice, however rich they may become.

My Mother: My Hero

My mother is my bundle of joy, the first person I search for when I enter the house is my mother. She will smile and then scold me for shouting and disturbing the entire house. Patience level of my mother is a blessing from the divine; she is always very calm and composed. My mother is often very strict, which is obviously for my good. She would not let me use my mobile phone and laptop for too long as it would affect me. She teaches me to be kind to others. I want to become a superhuman like my mother. "Mother is the most beautiful flower on this Earth; each is unique and holds a different fragrance."

How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay About My Mother

Writing about someone close to you, such as your mother, can be a meaningful and rewarding experience. One of the best ways to structure your writing is to use the 5-paragraph essay format.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of writing a 5-paragraph essay about your mother, with detailed examples and lists to help you along the way.

Introduction

The introduction is your chance to hook your reader and provide a preview of what’s to come in your essay. Here are some tips for crafting a strong opening paragraph about mother :

  • Start with a strong opening sentence that grabs your reader’s attention. For example, you could begin with a quote about mothers or an anecdote that illustrates your relationship with your mom.
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her name, age, occupation, and any other relevant details to your essay.
  • Explain why you’ve chosen to write about your mother and what makes her so unique to you. This will help your reader understand the significance of your essay.
  • Finally, give a brief overview of the structure of your essay. Tell your reader what they can expect to learn from your writing and how you’ll be organizing your thoughts.

The First Paragraph

The first body paragraph of your essay should introduce your topic (your mother) and provide a thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Start with a sentence introducing your mother and explaining why she is important to you. For example, you could say, “My mother is the most important person in my life because she has always been there for me, no matter what.”
  • Provide some background information about your mother, such as her age, occupation, and any other relevant details.
  • Explain the focus/theme of your essay. This could be anything from your mother’s resilience in adversity to her impact on your personal growth and development.
  • Finally, provide a clear and concise thesis statement that ties your focus/theme to your mother’s significance in your life. For example, your thesis statement could be, “My mother’s unwavering support has been the driving force behind my success.”

The Second Paragraph

The second paragraph of your essay should provide examples and anecdotes that support the focus/theme you introduced in the first paragraph. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by introducing the specific example or anecdote you’ll be sharing. For instance, you could say, “One of the best examples of my mother’s support came when I was struggling in school.”
  • Share the details of the example or anecdote. This could include specific conversations with your mother, her actions to support you, or challenges you overcame together.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. How did her support make a difference for you? What did you learn from the experience? How did it strengthen your relationship with your mother?
  • Tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your focus/theme and your overall argument.

The Third Paragraph

The third paragraph of your essay should continue to explore the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. Here are some tips for writing this section:

  • Start by introducing a new example or anecdote that supports your focus/theme. For instance, you could talk about how your mother helped you through a difficult time.
  • Provide details about the example or anecdote, just as you did in the previous paragraph.
  • Analyze the impact of your mother’s actions on your life. What did you learn from this experience? How did it shape who you are today?
  • Again, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how this example or anecdote supports your overall argument.

The Fourth Paragraph

The fourth paragraph of your essay should provide a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by acknowledging that there may be other perspectives on your mother’s impact on your life. For example, you could say something like “While my mother has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on my life, I know that not everyone has had the same experience.”
  • Introduce a counterargument or opposing viewpoint. This could be something like “Some people might argue that a mother’s impact on her child is overstated and that other factors, such as genetics or upbringing, are more important.”
  • Analyze the counterargument or opposing viewpoint. Explain why you disagree with this perspective and provide evidence to support your argument. This could include personal anecdotes, statistics, or expert opinions.
  • Finally, tie your analysis back to your thesis statement. Make it clear how your counterargument supports your overall argument and reinforces the importance of your mother’s impact on your life.

The Fifth Paragraph

Your essay’s fifth and final paragraph should summarize your main points and provide a conclusion. Here’s how to do it:

  • Start by summarizing the key points you’ve made in your essay. Remind your reader of your focus/theme, thesis statement, and the examples and anecdotes you’ve shared.
  • Provide a final analysis of your mother’s impact on your life. Explain why she is so important to you and what you’ve learned from your experiences with her.
  • End with a firm conclusion. This could be a call to action, a personal reflection, or a final thought that ties everything together. For example, you could end with something like, “My mother will always be my role model and inspiration. I hope I can be as supportive and loving as she has always been to me someday.”

Example essay about my mother

My mother is the most important person in my life. She has been there for me through thick and thin, always supporting and encouraging me to be the best I can be. Her unwavering love and dedication have been a constant source of strength for me, and I am forever grateful for everything she has done for me. Firstly, my mother is the epitome of selflessness. She always puts the needs of others before her own, and she never complains about it. Also, my mother has a great sense of humor and an infectious zest for life. Even in the most challenging of times, she always finds a way to make me laugh and to see the bright side of things. Her positive attitude and sunny disposition have taught me the importance of looking on the bright side and never giving up hope. In conclusion, my mother is the most amazing person that I know. Example 2: A Portrait of Strength and Love: My Mother

In the tapestry of my life, there is one thread that shines brighter than all others – the unwavering presence of my mother. She is not just a figure in my life; she is the cornerstone, the guiding light, and the epitome of love and strength. In this essay, I aim to paint a vivid portrait of the woman who has shaped me into who I am today. Body: My mother’s love knows no bounds. It is a force of nature, gentle yet unyielding, like the steady flow of a river that nourishes all in its path. From the moment I came into this world, she cradled me in her arms, her touch a soothing balm that could heal any wound, physical or emotional. Her love is not confined to mere words; it is expressed through her actions, through the countless sacrifices she has made for our family. One of the most remarkable traits of my mother is her boundless strength. She has weathered storms that would have broken lesser souls, yet she emerged from the tempest stronger than ever. I have seen her face adversity with grace and courage, never once faltering in her resolve. She is the backbone of our family, the one we turn to in times of need, knowing that her strength will carry us through even the darkest of days. But my mother is not just a beacon of strength; she is also a source of wisdom and guidance. Her words are infused with a depth of knowledge that can only come from a life well-lived. Whenever I am faced with a difficult decision or grappling with uncertainty, I know that I can turn to her for counsel, and she will always steer me in the right direction. Despite the many roles she juggles – mother, wife, daughter, friend – my mother always finds time to nurture her passions and pursue her dreams. Whether it’s tending to her garden, losing herself in a good book, or simply enjoying a quiet moment of reflection, she reminds me of the importance of self-care and staying true to oneself. Conclusion: In the tapestry of my life, my mother is the brightest thread, the one that adds color and meaning to the fabric of my existence. She is my rock, my confidante, and my greatest source of inspiration. As I navigate the journey of life, I am grateful to have her by my side, guiding me with her love, wisdom, and unwavering strength. Outline Writing

Before starting the essay, it is very important to construct the perfect outline. Make the perfect plan and execute it smoothly. You can note down all your points on a piece of paper not to run out of ideas during the writing. Make sure that your outline covers all the points. An essay is normally divided into three parts. It contains the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion. Each of these parts has its importance.

An outline will give your essay a perfect shape. It will help improve the clarity of your essay and will it one of a kind.

Tips Concerning Writing An Introduction

Body paragraphs, also known as the main body, are the heart of the essay. These paragraphs are long, and each part explains one point in the essay. The main body must be free of all errors, and the vocabulary must be on point. Try to give one point to one paragraph so that the reader might easily navigate around the essay. Take each memory of your mother and write it in one paragraph. This will get you the perfect essay.

Body Paragraphs must not be that much longer. This is because a long paragraph might be boring for the reader, and he might lose attention after a while. Try to use transition words to connect all the paragraphs so that the document flows well.

How To Write a Conclusion in A Mother Essay

A mother essay conclusion must also be 10% of the entire document. Never add any new piece of information in the conclusion. The conclusion is supposed to reignite the thesis statement and not include new facts. Try to keep the conclusion short and leave the essay with good remarks.

Think of the conclusion as a summary of your essay. Try to squeeze in all the points in a few lines to make the last paragraph memorable.

Essay Revision

Give your essay a long and good read. Make sure to identify all the mistakes in the writing. Essay revision is very important because you never know the points that you missed. Doing a thorough revision will help your essay become perfect in every way.

Essay Proofreading

Even if you are an experienced writer, proofreading is very important. You can identify the grammar and vocabulary mistakes in the document to make amendments. Most people are prone to make silly mistakes, and since they don’t proofread, the entire essay suffers. Ask your friend to read the entire essay so that you might have a fresh set of eyes on the document to identify mistakes.

Make Citations

Adding references will make your essay look more authentic than the rest. Adding citations won’t be appropriate in a mother’s essay, but make sure you add them anyway. It looks professional, and the professor might be impressed.

My Mother Essay

Some people in our lives have the most impact on our personality. My mother has been the source of my happiness and clarity since I was very small. Words can’t even begin to describe what she meant to me. When I was born, I couldn’t speak, but she understood my every word and reacted accordingly. The most important person in my life is my mother because she has always been there for me in all my life ventures. She helped shape the man I am today.

I was a very spontaneous kid. My mother made sure that I knew that I had her full support in every phase of life. When I was 13 years old, I wanted to play the guitar and become a musician. No matter how unprofessional my dream was, she made sure that she was by my side. She was the first to lend me money when I started my start-up, and even though it failed, she never said one negative thing to me. And the best part is that she cares for everyone in our family with the same amount of love. When our dogs get sick, she spends hours looking after them and takes them to the vet whenever required.

My mother leads a very simple life. Her day starts with waking us up for breakfast, and she makes sure that our favorite things are made for breakfast. I enjoy chocolate syrup pancakes, so she makes sure to make them almost every day. Then she works in the garden for 2 hours. She loves looking after plants and growing them. I feel like the two hours in the garden are the best part of her day. Her caring attitude towards everything makes her the perfect person to look after our plants.

Other than gardening, she loves reading. We have our little library besides my room which is filled with books that my mom had bought. A library is a sacred place, and we aren’t allowed there at times. She makes sure that our house is spot on. My mother is a neat freak. She hates when something is untidy or dirty. My mother often scolds me because I never put my laundry in the designated pile. She makes sure that our house is spot on, and the housekeeper leaves no work behind.

The amount of dedication my mother has towards my school is surprising. She always helps me in doing my homework and asks me how my day at school was. She has the sweetest personality, and anyone who meets her instantly starts liking her.

I would not give up my mother even for one day because my life would fall apart if not for her. She has made me into the confident and high-achieving individual that I am today. My life would have been a mess if my mother wasn’t there to help me out in every step.

In fact, we can say that a mother is the most precious gift of God for anyone. Mother is the first teacher for every child from which a baby can learn respect and caring, learn to speak, and a child can see the world only because of a mother. She can be a friend, parent, guardian, caretaker, and teacher in her life for their child also, she takes the responsibility to run a family and make the home as beautiful as heaven. Her smile illuminates the entire home with her presence, affection, and love. Every human being or living creature has a special and emotional attachment to their mother. For all the babies in this world, the safest and most relaxing place is their mother’s lap.

A mother holds the entire responsibility of her family and the happiness of the people living in the house. She helps and takes care of everyone, whether they are elders, kids, or grandparents. She is so delightful and helpful that she is always ready to help her neighbors and friends when needed. Her love is unconditional and pure for everyone in her family. Life began with waking up

And loving my mother’s face

YES, we all start our day with our mother’s smiling face. My day started when my mother gets me up early in the morning. For me, my mom is the best example of love and kindness in this universe. She knows how to take care of us.

From the very tender age, I became a fan of her as I like my mom’s hardworking and dedicated nature. My mom sacrificed a lot in order to shape my life. She has brought me up with utmost love and care.

She could understand me even when I couldn’t utter a word. Mother is another name of true love. A mother loves his child selflessly and doesn’t expect or demand anything in return. My mother whom I call mom turns our house into a home.

My mother is the busiest person at our home. She gets up much before the sun rises and start to perform her duty. She cooks food for us, takes care of us, goes shopping and even plans our future too.

In our family, my mother plans how to spend and how to save for the future. My mom was my first teacher. She also plays a vital role in shaping my moral character. She doesn’t even forget to take care of our health.

Whenever any one of our family members falls sick, my mother spends a sleepless night and sits beside him/her and take care of him/her for the whole night. My mom never tires of her responsibility. My father also depends on her whenever he finds any difficulty in taking any serious decision.

The word mother is full of emotion and love. The value of this sweet word is truly felt by those children who don’t have anyone to call ‘mother’. So the one who has his/her mother beside them should feel proud.

But in today’s world, some wicked children consider their mother a burden when she gets old. The person who spends all her life for their children become a burden for their child at the last moment of her life.

Some selfish child even doesn’t bother to send his/her mom to old age home. This is really a shame and unfortunate incident as well. The government should keep an eye to those incidents and should take those shameless children in judicial custody.

I want to stand with my mother like a shadow all the time. I know today I am here only because of her. So I want to serve my mother for the rest of my life. I also want to build my carrier so that my mom feels proud of me.

She clears all my doubts and confusion in Maths and Science. She is very patient while explaining complicated topics. I don’t have to worry about anything when my Mom is with me. My mother has done a lot of sacrifices for my happiness. Love and affection she gives me in infinite. I love her. I love my father too. I am luckiest to have such parents in my life. I have written a whole Essay on My Mother.

Essay on My Mother 500 words

My mother has had the greatest influence on me throughout my life. Through her, I have learned a lot of things about how to traverse the various facets of life. By seeing the kind of person she was while I grew up, I have modeled the kind of woman I want to become as well. My mother is my guide, idol, and source of inspiration in life, and I can say it with great pride.

My mother is the one person whom I can completely trust. She is the main reason for my progress and development since she works relentlessly. She never makes any distinctions within the family and provides our entire family with equal and undivided devotion and love.

Her devotion to her family is unwavering and complete. She puts her own needs and desires aside for the sake of her family. My mother has been my greatest source of inspiration and has played an important role in my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development.

Mothers are an Inspiration

A mother contains several characteristics that make her the embodiment of love and dedication. She is forgiving and understands us when we make mistakes. She takes severe measures to fix our mistakes and ensures that we are aware of our responsibilities. From sunrise to night, day in and day out, a mother works tirelessly to fulfill all of our dreams.

A mother is someone who consoles you in your time of need, makes sacrifices, and makes every attempt to provide a comfortable life for her child. A mother is a selfless individual who, like the sun, chases away all darkness and shines the light of happiness and love onto her family.

Motivation is a state of mind that enables us to successfully complete any project or task. It is a form of a natural environment that aids our physical and social growth. We know that we can attain any goal, even in the most difficult circumstances, because of inspiration coming from a person or an event.

For the growth of our abilities, we seek encouragement from other sources, such as a popular figure or a special person near us who encourages us whether we can achieve the objective even in difficult situations.

As a result, we are capable of completing this task. Numerous people are inspired by legendary or historical figures, and then many people are inspired by famous people or their parents. It makes no difference who your source of inspiration is or how much you are inspired by its ideas and practices in order to achieve your goal.

Mothers are a constant source of inspiration and motivation for children to become good individuals as they grow older. They instill in them a sense of responsibility, care and affection for others, and a sense of resilience that can hardly be found anywhere else.

Every person must have some sense of creativity in his life from which he can draw inspiration in order to attain his life objectives and progress. A teacher might be an inspiration in someone’s life, a successful person can be an inspiration in someone else’s, but in my life, my mother is my biggest motivation. She is the individual who has motivated me to attain my life’s objectives and to keep moving forward.

My mother is also an admiration to me because, while most individuals work to gain popularity and a name in society, a mother never feels that. All she wants for her children is for them to achieve in life. She is not motivated by self-interest in her work. This is why I regard my mother to be a human manifestation of God.

My Mother is My Best Friend

My mother is my teacher, advisor, and greatest friend, and she plays many vital roles in my life. It works to instill confidence in me when I’m having an issue. Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. I couldn’t picture my life without her, which is why I consider her my closest buddy.

Despite the many roles a woman plays in her life, the bond she shares with her mother is one of the purest relationships in the world. The bond between a mother and her child is indescribable. The mother is also the one who gives birth to her child and raises her. However, a mother’s love for her children never fades, and she is more concerned about their well-being than her own.

To safeguard her child, a mother is willing to face the worst disasters. A mother may shoulder all of the burdens alone, but she will not allow her offspring to be exposed to any form of heat. For these reasons, the mother is regarded as a manifestation of God on Earth, leading to the common proverb, “God cannot exist everywhere, therefore he made mothers.”

A Mother’s Strength

Although my mother may not physically be the strongest person, she nevertheless meets every challenge in her life and that of her family. She is a continual source of inspiration who reminds me to never give up in the face of adversity.

Above all, my mother is a major source of motivation for me, since she encourages me to enhance my abilities, academics, and talents. She inspires me to try again, to never give up, and work hard until I succeed. The way she traverses through the innumerable obstacles she faces in life is a constant reminder of the strength of a woman and how we can face any adversity that comes our way.

During difficult times, my mom is a lifesaver. Despite the fact that she chastises and corrects me, she is the only person capable of solving the problem, whether it is school or life-related. She is my instructor and guide, who shows me the way and steers me through the toughest moments.

Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. She is an excellent teacher, a rigorous parent, a loyal friend, and a delightful companionship. Not only my mother, but every mother is an expression of God who devotes her entire life to her family and is deserving of much respect and admiration.

A mother possesses both inherent and learned attributes that identify her job as a mother. The key trait of a mother is responsibilities, which comes with motherhood. Regardless of age or repercussions, my mother displays unselfish love and affection.

She is my greatest source of strength and support, and she never fails to inspire and drive us through all of life’s ups and downs. Mothers can understand and empathize with their children. My mother’s most striking characteristic is her tremendous level of acceptance and tolerance. Despite the fact that she is dealing with several issues, she remains calm and patient.

My Mother Essay for Class 5 Students

Essay on my mother for class 5 students.

Mother is a very special and important person for every child. In fact, she is the most precious gift of God for anyone. A child can see the world only because of her. She is a friend, parent, guide, and teacher to her child. She takes care of the entire family and turns a house into a beautiful home. She brings up her children with the utmost care, compassion and love. She illuminates our homes with her presence and smile. The word Mother itself brings emotions to us and every child is very emotionally attached to their mothers. The safest a child can feel is in the warmth of his/her mother’s lap.

For me, my mother is the symbol of love, honesty, truth, and compassion in this world. My mother is an inspiration for me. She is an amazing woman. She is the woman I admire the most. I start my day with my mother’s smile. She is the first one to wake up every morning, every single day. She starts her day at five in the morning by taking our pet for a walk. She then wakes my brother and me and prepares us for school. She takes care of our lunch boxes with different menus every day. She drops us at the bus stop. Her waving hand gives us assurance that she is always there for us no matter what. She helps us with our studies and assignments. My mother is the one to spend sleepless nights when we fall sick. She is always very concerned about our education, health, and happiness. She defines our character every moment. She also compromises her needs and ensures that our needs are taken care of first. She always guides us to do the right things in life and choose the right direction. She does everything possible to make us feel comfortable all the time. She is our best friend. We can share all our secrets with her and whenever we are in jeopardy, we know that our mother would give us some solution. Many times, she becomes a child herself and enjoys to the fullest with us like going out for movies, shopping and playing ludo, cards, etc.

My mother not only takes care of us but also takes care of our father and grandparents. She is the pillar of strength for our father. She is the one who creates strong bonds among all our relatives. She is always on her toes catering to all needs and requirements of my grandparents. She has never stepped back whenever our neighbors and friends approached her for help. She helps in volunteering for community work for the betterment of our society.

She takes care of every household chore without complaining even once. She runs a food business alongside. She has relentless stamina to manage both home and business. She has immense emotional and physical strength to surmount everyday challenges and obstacles both in business and home.  Sometimes I wonder how she manages everything at the same time. She is so good at multitasking and she does it flawlessly.

Her positive attitude and skills have broadened my strength to stay calm during challenging times. I aspire to be like her and inculcate all her qualities.

A mother is like Mother Nature who always gives unconditionally without any expectations in return. It is not easy to be a living inspiration for someone and to do so requires a life full of positivity, wisdom, conviction and enthusiasm. Mother is not simply a word; in fact, it is a whole universe in itself. She is indeed the most important person in everybody's life.

No, my life didn’t ‘start’ the day I became a mom

woman with eyes close leaning on wall

Rob and Julia Campbell/Stocksy

Technically speaking, it ended.

By Katherine Dillon May 29, 2024

My life did not begin the day I became a mom; it ended. The life of the woman before becoming a mom was officially over. I would no longer be free to make last-minute decisions or be available to meet up with friends on a weeknight whim, or decide to take a day trip two towns away with minimal thought and effort. My ability to drive to the grocery store without thinking of all the ways my daughter could be hurt died that day, too. Postpartum anxiety paralyzed me with fear for my daughter’s safety. It had me spiraling about whether the food I was feeding her or the soap I was using or the clothes I was dressing her in were safe. Every odd sound or slightly runny nose was evidence that she was sick and that I would lose her. My life ended the day she was born. But another began.

A life with a sweet angel or hilarious hellion, depending on the moment. A life with someone who is ever-curious and awe-inspired by the most mundane of things. (“Wow, so beautiful! Wow, amazing!” She’s looking at the garbage truck or the grocery store.) A life filled with laughter and tears, excitement and everything in between. The full range of human emotion, all day, every day. Without her, I would never have experienced all of it. My life began the day she was born.

Related: These words from a stranger reframed my view on motherhood

But this life is not more important than my previous life. That life and that woman were just as worthy and just as alive as the woman I am today.

Her goals and priorities were important. Her work was important. Her friendships and pastimes were important. These lives are not in competition with each other and never have been. I grieve her—that life was what I wanted; this life is what I want.

There were other lives before her: a precocious kid, an awkward lonely teen, a sometimes driven, sometimes unconcerned college student. I carry each one with me. Each one was enough. Each one was worthy exactly as they were. There will be other lives after this one.

Related: I refuse to be a martyr for motherhood

There was another life between the one from before and now. The one between the fun carefree adult and the mother. She is the one who wanted to be this version of me but couldn’t. The one who was told, “It’s twins… I’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat.” The one who was told, “It might be too soon to know, don’t lose hope,” only to have that hope crushed, then revived and crushed several more times. The one who would lose another pregnancy and struggle for another year to get and stay pregnant. She is the woman who knows what it feels like to have hope, quite literally, dead inside her; the one whose sense of self was rocked by loss and who almost drowned in her grief. I carry her with me too. Her life was important and worthy.

The women from before set a strong foundation for the woman I am now. A foundation built on an education and a career I am proud of, a dream for the future career I am working toward, and the principles and beliefs that make me a better person and a good mom. Those women have gifted me empathy, passion and the knowledge that I can do hard things. I will pass them on to the next version of me and to my daughter.

Related: To my mom friends: Thank you for letting me lean on you through motherhood

My perfect angel/hellion daughter is now 2. She loves twirly dresses and making messes. She hates bugs. She loves her dog, her dad and her mom. She loves to play at the park and find rocks. She loves to snuggle on the couch. She’s always excited to see friends—both the ones she knows and the ones she doesn’t. She is strong-willed and fierce, and soft and sweet. I am grateful that I get to be me so that I get to watch her grow and change. I get to watch all the lives she will live. Soon she’ll be the class clown or the ‘animal girl’ (please, God, let it not be reptiles). Later, maybe she’ll be the book lover, or the soccer star, or both, or neither. She’ll be the passionate defender of her friends (the ones she knows and the ones she doesn’t.)

She will be so many versions of herself, just as I have been. Every one of those versions is inherently valuable and worthy. Her value does not rest on decisions in a future life. Whether she marries and has children, whether she has a career, or whether she does both or neither, will not change her worth. Whatever roles she chooses to take on will not diminish the ones she chose before.

How Taiwan won the hearts of my American kids

JiaYing Grygiel took her sons Paul and Joseph to see her birthplace of Taiwan.

“I don’t like Chinese,” announced my 8-year-old. (Ironically, in Chinese. That softened the blow.)

I knew this day would come, when my American-born, half-Taiwanese children would reject the language and culture I’d worked so hard to teach them. Time to visit the motherland and win them back.

How do you appeal to the hearts of  8- and 12-year-old boys? Unsanctioned time away from school, homework free. Frittering away money at night market games. The cross-cultural allure of amusement parks.

Over 16 fulfilling days, my boys and I explored Taipei, Hualien, Kaohsiung, Tainan and Chiayi, a full loop around the itty-bitty island nation where I was born. Taiwan is about the size of Maryland, and you can drive from tip to tip in 5.5 hours. I wanted my kids to see it all … while it’s still here.

The darkest part of my soul can’t help worrying about the unthinkable. Taiwan and China have been dancing around war since 1949. No one thought Russia would invade Ukraine for real either. The difference is, unlike Ukraine, only a dozen other teeny tiny nations officially recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty . And Taiwan is surrounded by water. There’s no place to flee.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

With Ukraine heavy on my mind, I took my kids to experience everything in their country of heritage.

We spent most of our time in the capital city of Taipei, where I lived the first four years of my life. From the top of Taipei’s tallest skyscraper, you can see the metropolis hugging the folds of green mountains. From street level, the city is a warren of alleys crammed with scooters and burglar bars over every window. The mosquitoes are relentless.

On our island circuit, we dug our toes into the beaches of Kenting, hiked in the Taroko Gorge, caught the sunrise at Alishan with mugs of hot cocoa in hand.

No one believed these American kids could speak the language. They’d test, asking Mandarin: “When’s your birthday?” My boys laughed their heads off, and I savored a smug mom moment.

We operated mostly as stealth tourists, because we speak Mandarin and more or less look the part. Except for the waiter who looked my boys up and down and tilted his head. “Mixed blood?” Busted. Taiwanese people are friendly in that no-filter, New Yorker sort of way.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

More clues to our outsider status: Wearing shorts and a T-shirt, when everyone else is bundled in puffy coats. (In 85 degree weather, I’m not kidding.) Walking around with giant bottles of ice water. Taiwanese people will drink tea, bubble tea, juice — anything but cold water. Or asking for a fork. Worst case scenario, I fed my much-too-old kids with chopsticks like baby birds.

Americans come in all colors and shapes; the Taiwanese are much more homogenous. The drugstore’s makeup aisle offers foundation in exactly three shades: light, lighter, lightest. Forget clothes shopping. My American women’s size medium translated into a Taiwanese 5XL.

Wrapped in security

Growing up, anytime someone asked the Where are you really from? question, I’d say, “I was born in Taiwan,” which is accurate. Half the time, I’d hear back, “Thailand?”

Or I’d say: “My grandparents are from China.” Also accurate. I didn’t feel right claiming Taiwanese nationality when I don’t speak the Taiwanese dialect.

In the hours before our red-eye to Taiwan, self-doubt and panic crept up like bile. The trip would be a whirlwind of meeting extended family who’d only ever seen my boys on Facebook posts.

“Headed to the airport in a bit. Full of misgivings now,” I texted a Taiwanese friend. “What did I get myself into? We haven’t even left yet and I can feel the weight of my relatives’ criticism on me.”

Her response: “Well, you wanted your kids to be exposed to the culture. Having judgmental and controlling elders stressing you out is part of Taiwanese culture.”

A big family means drama and feuds all around. The flip side is we were wrapped with security everywhere we went. In Taiwanese culture, everyone older than you is an auntie or uncle, everyone younger is a little sister or brother. Even if you’re not blood related. Even if you’re just an acquaintance. Or a passer-by on the MRT.

I even accepted unmarked meds from a stranger on the bus, with gratitude. A kind grandma (not biological grandma, just a random older lady) fished pills out of her purse for my car sick kid.

Writer JiaYing Grygiel with her two sons in various Taiwan settings.

Taiwan is exceptionally safe 24/7: pre-dawn, late at night, in deserted side streets, in shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. A mom traveling alone with 2 kids? No problem. We never felt vulnerable, not for a second. Sorry Charles Sun, in real-life Taiwan, violent crime is virtually unheard of.

I wanted my boys to fall in love with their heritage, and nip that “I don’t like Chinese” mindset in the bud. I’m claiming victory.

Because after their first taste of Taiwan, the kids changed their tune. They said to me (in Mandarin): "Taiwan is so, so fun!  When are we going back?”

What Does a Mother Tell School When Her Daughter’s Been Out All Night With Her Drug Dealer?

Editor’s Note: Based on real events. Names have been changed for privacy. This essay deals with a suicide attempt by a teen.

I suppose I should call in sick for her. She will be expelled if I don’t. I pick up the phone and start to dial, then stop and heat up some water. I’ll have a cup of coffee and then think about it more clearly, from a caffeinated state.

I hate the thought that I would be lying to her school. I’m not all that cozy with the idea of lying, period. I was that horrible girl scout who told on the camp counselor who gave out candy before bed, after teeth brushing.

You would hate me if you knew all my stuff, I am sure of it. My daughter Marissa does. I’m pretty sure of that.

What does a mother tell the school when her daughter has been out all night at her drug dealer’s house?

I turn off the stove and pour the water into the coffee press. Steam clouds the glass and the aroma of coffee lifts into the room. I could just leave a message on the machine. They have a place you can call in early and do that. The “Attendance Line.” “Marissa will be out today,” I could say. I am thinking, “she is out alright, as in ‘out of it’.”

I don’t know the rules here. I don’t know what the mother is supposed to tell the school when her daughter has been out all night at her drug dealer’s house. Does this actually qualify for “out sick?”

While the coffee is steeping, I put the clean silverware away in the drawer. I like to make sure the salad forks are all in the salad fork slot, the dessert spoons nesting one inside the next. It is nice when you can open a drawer and witness all the cutlery sleeping where they are supposed to sleep, each in their appropriate little wooden beds with their siblings, nobody out of place.

I could just let my daughter get in trouble

I could just leave things alone, of course. Let her get in trouble . Let her face the consequences of her actions, by not calling in for her. Maybe this would be some sort of wake-up call. But letting one’s child get expelled from high school – one’s A + all around honor roll child, I might add, who recently wrote a paper on the Cuban Missile blockade that could pass for a United Nations position paper – doesn’t seem right.

In a way, that would be sabotaging her future, right? But then one would have to beg the next question: what sort of future does a child have when she goes out every night like this, stays with the drug dealer, and probably consorts with many other people whom one has never even heard of or seen.

My daughter’s drug dealer is an odd fellow

The drug dealer is an odd fellow worth describing for his sheer originality. He has that scruff on his chin that must pass for a beard in his mind. Baby scruff. The way he pulls on it sometimes is amusing, like he is some bearded philosopher, pondering, say, Occam’s razor , or some other deep philosophical conundrum.

His name is Gary. When Gary comes over, he just pulls into the driveway and waits. The one time he came in the house, his right knee was in constant motion, like something fluttering in a breeze. It just vibrated.

Sometimes Marissa’s knee does that. Or her foot taps incessantly. It is like some part of their bodies have been abducted by metronomes. They are stuck keeping a fast rhythm, some kind of runaway samba that we are all supposed to ignore, like it isn’t happening. If you look at their busy knees, they get upset.

“What are you looking at,” Marissa asks me, if I do. She tells me I am passive aggressive. The way I look at her tapping foot, her knee.

When the coffee is ready, I pour it into the white mug with the “M” on it. It is the Marissa mug. Long ago we got these mugs with our initials. Mine is the “T” mug, for Theresa. As I reach for the “M” mug, the “T” mug looks at me from the shelf like it is thinking “wrong mug, jerk.” But on this morning when Marissa is still at her drug dealer’s house, and about to miss school, I  want  to drink my coffee from the Marissa mug.

I add milk and a lot of sugar, just the way she likes it. We sometimes joke about this—her sugar preferences. “Have a little coffee with your sugar,” I might say. To which she will reply, “I will and I’ll have a little cake with my frosting, too.” She has a good sense of humor, my Marissa.

Every time I hear a siren I think it’s for my daughter

My mother used to say it whenever I went out on dates as a teenager: “Every time I hear a siren, I think it is for you.” In my case it was hyperbole. I was a garden-variety teen, whose most dangerous activities might have been t.p.ing our neighbor’s yard at Halloween, or stealing a sip off my dad’s can of Bud when he went to the bathroom. I would steal a sip and my mom and I would exchange glances and smile. Bad girl! I didn’t even like beer. It was just a thing I did. Like I needed to prove I actually was a teenager or something.

A year ago, the siren that wailed up the avenue  was  for Marissa. She was found blue and unresponsive on a riverbank, downstream from where she had jumped off the bridge. When she finally woke up in the hospital, two days later, she looked around the hospital room, as if surveying the afterlife. “Well. That was refreshing,” she finally said.

We were all appalled, naturally, but somehow, we still smiled. She can do that; make you smile when you are appalled. Technically, it was amusing, beneath a thick skin of nightmare. A nightmare with many angles and aspects. There is the  jumped off the bridge and went into a coma  nightmare and then the  never came home  nightmare. And other brands of nightmare, too.

My daughter is a pending emergency of a girl

Example: she steals. Gum from the convenience store. Shirts from Pac Sun. Money from my wallet. “They have cameras in there, you know,” I once said, looking at a pile of booty on the side of her bed with Target tags still on them.

“I know,” she said, “that is why I did my hair. You like?”

Come to think of it, Marissa is the sort of girl that sirens were actually made for. A pending emergency of a girl.

We’ve been to the hospital where they took her many times

We had been to that hospital where they took her after her jump many times. To the ER, to the psych unit. We’ve spent hours waiting for them to assess and release her, so long that they have had to offer her Jell-o and bad meals on hard plastic trays while we wait for them to cut the plastic bracelets off her wrists and send her home again.

Somewhere in a drawer I still have it. The teensy bracelet she came home with when she was born. “SMITH, GIRL”. We hadn’t chosen a name for her yet. That was one of the many things we could not agree on, her father and I. Her dad was gone a few years later. Left her with his mother’s middle name and a beautiful mole beside her right eye, just like his own. He has a love for heroin; she is what they call a “garbagehead.”

That means she isn’t fussy.

No one knows who called 911 to report that my daughter was in the river

Someone called 911 after Marissa leapt into the river. Nobody actually knows who. The person gave the name Pete, but there was no Pete there. In fact, I never could find any Petes, anywhere, to ask about that day. Pete is sort of an outdated name. People name dogs Pete. No humans are called Pete anymore, so far as I can tell.

“She said she wanted a rush,” said one girl I had met several times, when I ran into her in WalMart. Maybe that girl was “Pete”. That would be so 2016, actually, a girl named Pete, calling to tell me my kid might be dead.

Technically, you could call jumping off a bridge a rush, I suppose. The river swallowed her whole and spat her out twenty feet downstream, unconscious and with a cut on her stomach that required seventeen stitches which would leave left a pink saw-toothed scar.

“She is so lucky,” the ER doc said. “Most kids that jump there, they drown. There being the Oxbow bridge. It is one of those well know teen-dying places.

Lucky, lucky, lucky, I thought, as I collected the bag that contained her red Snoopy watch and still-damp sneakers. “You are so lucky,” I said in the car, driving her home from the hospital.”“You are so passive aggressive,” she said. When I asked her why she did it, she replied, “ah… but the real question would be ‘why not?’”

The world’s disasters are somehow comforting to me

I take the coffee back to bed with me. I will turn on the news and drink it under the covers. Maybe something bad will be happening in the world. An F4 tornado, perhaps. A new plague rising in a distant land. A chunk of Antarctica drifting away. I can drift away nicely too, on the tide of other people’s disasters.

Dark confession: something about the whole world in crisis feels good. It is comforting when your daughter has spent the night at her drug dealer’s house and you can’t decide if you should call in sick for her in the morning so she does not get expelled from school, to think  we are all in this together here on earth . I can think: People’s kids are at risk in Ethiopia. Kenya. Afghanistan. It is really pretty normal, if you look at the big picture.

On the way up to her room, the coffee sloshed in the M cup, spilled onto my grey tee shirt and the rose and ochre runner on the stairs. “Oh no,” I say, to my shirt, to the rug, to the cup.

I walk into my daughter’s room and just stand there

I can’t help it. I take a detour. I walk into Marissa’s room and just stand there. There is her unmade bed, her pillow, still dented from an afternoon nap. There is doggy, the stuffed beagle that I once had to drive thirty-six miles to retrieve from a motel in Tennessee where it had been left behind when we were on a vacation.

I continue to stand there for a long time, just stand there. There is her favorite Alice in Wonderland poster. I got it for her for her birthday in 6 th  grade. There is her bong and her torn tee shirt that says, “Disney is Magic.”

There, beside the shirt, are the hightop Converse sneakers, the ones she was wearing when she was collected from the muddy river bank a year ago. I’ve washed them twice but they still smell of river. The smell of damp and mildew and dried snail and almost death.

She has drawn on them, with a black pen. Little curlicues and hearts adorn the rubber toes. On the ankle of the right one, she has drawn a small peace sign in orange marker. “Peace out,” she has written beside it.  And: “Love ya’.”

I pull my cell phone out and dial.  “Hello? This is Marissa Colby’s mother. Right, she will be out sick again today. Same thing. Right. Should be back tomorrow. We hope, anyway.

Thank you. Yes. Thank you. Goodbye.

Understanding My Son, One Game of Catch at a Time

A collage of disembodied children’s arms and hands holding and throwing baseballs.

By Jessica Shattuck

Ms. Shattuck is the author of the forthcoming novel “Last House.”

I have never played on an athletic team. As a child, I was not fast or coordinated or interested in anything that involved chasing, catching or otherwise playing ball. My mother, who grew up in postwar Germany, associated youth sports with the Hitler Youth and the Nazi obsession with fostering the “prey instinct” through competition and strength. These concerns dovetailed conveniently with my anti-gym-class feelings.

But in the long, cold and gloomy spring of 2020, I found myself the mother of an 8-year-old son who wanted nothing more than to play ball. This was the heart of early Covid; there were no organized sports, no activities, no babysitting, no school. Will’s older sisters (both teenagers) wanted no part in this activity. My husband was game, but Will’s appetite for catch was voracious. So I donned his spare baseball glove and let him teach me how to catch and throw.

American film and literature are threaded through with stories of fathers and sons playing ball, from Donald Hall’s essays “Fathers Playing Catch With Sons” to a father appearing on the baseball diamond in “Field of Dreams,” transcending death to participate in a game of catch with his son. I had always seen the game as a vaunted male tradition, laced with the pathos and psychodrama of inherited hopes and aspirations, the handing down of secret, implied codes of manhood.

But as I picked up a glove, the imagined maleness of the game offered me a certain freedom. I was not modeling what it means to be a man or re-enacting a ritual from my childhood. Will was not struggling to meet my expectations, even as I might be struggling to meet his. He was the teacher here. I got to appreciate his patience, his focus on detail, his encouragement.

We also weren’t talking. I am a writer who loves putting things into words, but Will doesn’t always love my questions or my boring mom-talk gambits. Here our closeness was measured in tosses, not words. Best of all, by the simple necessity of keeping the ball in the air, we were both fully present.

Will was an excellent coach: He broke the actions of catching and throwing down into a series of discrete steps: Crook your elbow just so, put your weight into the throw, follow through after release. Over — a lot of — time (lack of experience did not, in my case, conceal natural talent) I learned to overcome the frustration of a streak of bad throws or misses, to try less hard, sometimes, in order to do better, to take a breath and reset.

We fell into a rhythm and played for hours on our dead-end street. It wasn’t always fun: I became cranky when I repeatedly missed the ball. And on a cold day, it was hard to cheerily get off the sofa to go throw a ball outside.

Our game, miraculously, continued even after lockdowns were lifted. I still love the satisfying smack of the ball into the mitt, the almost magical feeling of stopping it midair. I like the thrill of reaching some number of consecutive passes, the singular focus of our combined concentration. Most of all I love spending the time, outside, with my son.

Will is 12 now, and on a travel baseball team; I have nothing to offer by way of meaningful “practice.” We have reversed roles: Now I’m the one asking him to get up off the couch and play.

Parenthood is so full of letting go — not just of children turning into young adults and leaving home, but of so many little selves along the path to adulthood. The smiley, round-cheeked toddler becomes the shy 7-year-old; the thoughtful, shaggy-haired kindergartner becomes the clean-cut, Celtics-mad fifth grader. Sometimes the urge to hold on feels almost frantic. The only way to pin time down is to remember: this moment, this boy, this place. Ritual and repetition.

When we first started playing, we would begin a few feet apart and with every completed catch take a step back, expanding the distance between us. Now when we play, I’m all the way up by the neighbor’s pine tree, and Will is down by the mailbox. He is almost a foot taller than he was at the start. Even if it’s been a while, the muscle memory soon kicks in: Catch, draw your arm back, crook your elbow, let go.
