The objectives of the project can be summarized under two headings:

The project topic may include (but are not limited to): sales and marketing, information exchange, cost and life cycle benefits, resource allocation, forecasting, technology roadmapping or selection, strategic and tactical planning, triple bottom line evaluations, decision analysis and support, quality control, manufacturing, or distribution.

A unique aspect of the Cornell Master of Engineering Program is the Team Course Project, which allows students to apply the knowledge and skills obtained from their courses in a practical way. 

Teams (comprised of 5-10 graduate students) partner with an industry sponsor for one semester. Project Profile: Amazon Robotics

Amazon Robotics wanted to know exactly where each employee, product, and robot was within the Fulfillment Center at all times. The lack of visibility of these three different groups leads to safety concerns for their employees in emergency situations and the interaction between humans and robots. Also, giving Amazon the visibility of all products as they flow throughout the Fulfillment Center will allow for an optimized process and ensure no products are misplaced or incorrectly shipped.

For the duration of the semester the team focused their efforts on four separate stages: Frame, Discover, Design, and Deliver.

During the Frame portion, they sought to understand what was required of them, how the work will fit into the larger context of Amazon Robotics and Amazon as a whole, and truly understand the problem they were tasked to solve. The Discovery sprint led the team to research localization technologies in academia and those that were being commercialized by companies through interviews with Ph.D. candidates, professors, and representatives from these companies. The team also used this time to interview stakeholders in Amazon’s marketplace and visit an Amazon Fulfillment Center in New Jersey. What Is a Capstone Project in Engineering?

For Faculty Lecturer Alyssa McCluskey , the capstone project at the University of Colorado’s Engineering Management Program (EMP) boils down to two things: agency and opportunity. 

Agency, because students can chart their own course. And opportunity, arising from that agency, allows students to become leaders on their own or within their organizations. McCluskey ought to know: Capstone worked for her as a student and she knew, eventually, it could work for others as well.

“In my civil engineering capstone, we could explore and create different solutions to the use of biosolids, and I was really proud of the report and presentation that we produced,” McCluskey says. “I did send the report to my future employer, a research institute in Boston, and was hired partially based on the document that I had sent them. And I just remember really enjoying the process. So I wanted to bring that to this Program as something to offer the students.

What Is a Capstone Project?

In the Engineering Management Program, students can now elect to cap off their engineering curriculum with a capstone project. The project can be anything that uses their management and engineering skills to make a product, design software or find innovative ways to affect change within their industry.

In the past, students were given a list of topics to write an 8-10 page paper using concepts learned throughout the program to culminate their degree. McCluskey found that the traditional method was serving neither students nor faculty well. This method seemed like just regurgitating material and lacked a meaningful experience for students to use what they learned throughout the degree.

Looking for more flexible options for CU students, the EMP decided to offer two paths for degree completion: completing the full coursework, 30 credit hours, or taking 27 credit hours of coursework and completing a final 3-credit capstone project in their final semester. 

“We made the capstone flexible so students can explore any ideas or topics of interest,” McCluskey says. “Anything from hot topics in project management to anything they found interesting over their courses in the EMP. I encourage them to look at courses they really enjoyed, talk with professors they enjoyed learning from, meet with professionals working in areas they are interested in and think of topics around that.”

A Diverse Range of Capstone Project Ideas

EMP just launched this program and there are four students in the first cohort, each working on a unique capstone project. All of them are focused on finding practical solutions to real-world problems.

One student’s capstone is about finding effective methods and tactics to increase employee engagement within the Office of Information Technology (OIT).

“This is a student who’s employed at OIT at CU,” McCluskey says. “And so she was asking how do we retain our employees and make them happy and want to stay? She found some startling statistics that close to 50% of employees are thinking of leaving.”

This capstone is especially topical given the nature of the Great Resignation where many employees are seeking better opportunities and are no longer willing to settle for the status quo.

“She did a number of surveys, listened to podcasts, took some courses and came up with a plan that she’s trying to implement within her department based on the capstone she worked on,” McCluskey adds. 

Another fascinating engineering capstone project idea was one student’s mission to make a more sustainable satellite, combining interests in both sustainability and the aerospace industry. 

“They developed a tool to quantify the environmental impacts of producing, launching and disposing of a satellite,” McCluskey says. After inputting the information into a spreadsheet, it comes out with “the carbon footprint of what the satellite would produce. And not only that but also ranking which areas you should spend your [resources] and get the most bang for the buck that’s most probably going to reduce your carbon footprint,” McCluskey says.

Given the concerns about orbital “space junk,” this capstone project addresses a need in aerospace that could be all the more germane as technology allows us to explore beyond our own planet.

And for the person on the move  whose arms are constantly full and trying to literally—and figuratively—juggle the messiness of life, one student came to the capstone project with an idea already in hand: “merge bottle technology”—magnetized stacking water bottles that allow you to carry different beverages or food in one place, even at different temperatures.

“What I saw was great,” McCluskey says. “As a parent, you’re having to carry all these things, right? Also, he found that people in the healthcare industry and first responders who might be on a shift for a long time were interested right away. You can keep something hot, you can keep something cold, you could put food in one and drinks in another. Teachers as well. They have all these bags and bunches of containers they carry around. So instead of having multiple water bottles for your coffee and your water, you could just carry one stack.”

Yet another capstone project focuses on the uncertainties inherent in software product development and how that uncertainty affects humans at the neurobiological level. 

“This student is in the software product management field, so she studied how we can better support employees to deal with uncertainty,” McCluskey says, “and she came up with four main things that companies can do to help their employees deal with that.”

The capstone project identified four key strategic theories—frequent stakeholder communication, a transparent roadmap with dependencies, iterative feedback opportunities and integration and focus on analytics—that empower product managers to ameliorate uncertainty among stakeholders during the software development process. 

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that students focus their capstone project not on abstract concepts, but on tangible strategies that have the potential for immediate real-world application. As a result, these capstone projects can help a student stand out as a desirable employee and a potential leader in their field or company.

Communication and Research: Soft Skills for Engineers that Pay Dividends

Many people—even many experts— know their field and products inside and out but struggle with communicating their ideas and knowledge to key audiences within their company or to clients. To help develop these skills, part of the capstone project incorporates a communication course. 

“This involves working on your writing, working on your presentation skills, and working on peer reviews,” McCluskey says. 

Good communication also means translating sometimes complex ideas and knowledge into a “language” that a wide audience can understand. That’s a skill that students refine over the course of their projects. 

“You may understand something so well that you’re using acronyms others don’t know and you just lose the reader right away,” McCluskey says. “So that’s something we spend some time on. What’s nice is that we switch throughout the semester with our peers as well as the instructors and advisors so that if anybody is unfamiliar with something, it’s highlighted.”

Another benefit of the capstone project is that it allows students to stretch and improve their research skills beyond the usual Google search. Rachel Knapp, assistant professor and applied sciences librarian at CU, spoke to the capstone cohort and went over online resources available to CU students via OneSearch and discussed best practices in research strategies—for instance, how to narrow a topic and get the best out of information searches and how to determine which journals you may want to publish in. If capstone students get “stuck” in their research or are not getting the results hoped for, they can set up an appointment with a CU librarian to help with ideas and options. 

Armed with this information, the capstone gives the students a chance to put into action much of what they’ve learned during the EMP and presents a valuable opportunity to live out what being an engineering manager is all about.

“They come in and they are the project manager of their capstones, ” McCluskey says. “So they get a chance to implement all the things you can think of that go into that: time management, building out your product schedule, problem-solving skills, thinking ahead, identifying what you might run into that’s going to cause a problem. They start to build their confidence because they’re now experts on this topic.”

Taking on a project of this nature flexes many skills including writing and planning, constructively giving peer feedback, and setting and achieving goals—while also making a student an attractive hire or a more effective contributor in their current position.

“The student who created the toolbox for the sustainable satellite,” McCluskey says, “is actually presenting to some higher-ups in his company who have expressed interest in what he’s done. So that’s not only letting our student be seen by people up in his organization but also giving him a way forward and fast track in that sense.”

“This is a Chance to Explore Something That Interests You”

For students, these ideas for capstone projects lead to something beyond typical coursework: the freedom to explore. Instead of listening to lectures and wondering, “Will this be on the test?” EMP capstone cohorts take the reins of their interests and bring those ideas to the world with the idea of solving a problem for individuals  (teachers/mothers/first responders) or an entire industry (more sustainable satellite building for aerospace).

“This is a chance to explore something that interests you,” McCluskey says. “You’re not coming to a class prescribed exactly what you have to learn. You get to choose where you want to put your time and where your interests lie. It’s a win-win: You’re getting credit for it, and you're also coming out with something that you might personally believe in or want to move forward with.”

McCluskey is proof positive of the benefits of the capstone. She still works with advisors she knew from 30 years ago. 

She says, “You’re really developing those relationships as well, not only with your classmates through working together in peer reviews and class, but also with your advisor and other professionals you interact with over the semester.” 

“I’m their guide on this adventure,” McCluskey adds. “I bring in some guest speakers so they can learn from outside experts. I try to base the guest speakers on student interests like entrepreneurship and journal editors for publishing papers to help spark and refine student ideas. I also have lectures and guest speakers on communication best practices throughout the course, and then help them stay on track.”

Advisors, faculty or working professionals who are chosen by each student, meet with them at least five times over the semester, all the while reviewing the work. These relationships may bear fruit later in a career and provide an important sounding board for bouncing around new ideas.

And in the end, the progress made quite literally puts a capstone on the Engineering Management Program.

“It gives you confidence and pride in the culmination of your degree,” McCluskey says. “It's not just a piece of paper, you actually have a product that you've developed and the ability that you can do something like this.”

Engineering Capstone Projects: For EMP, It’s Just the Beginning

For McCluskey, this is an exciting time. Seeing the four students come through the capstone project fills her with optimism for the future of the project and, more importantly, what it offers to EMP students willing to take on the capstone and flex their engineering skills.

She sees students come in with ideas that are all over the board and then with her help along with other advisors, refine the ideas so they are manageable and attainable. It is gratifying for McCluskey to hear what the cohort had achieved at the end of this pilot program.

“We had them present to all the advisors at the end of the semester and they offered beautiful presentations,” she says. “They were high quality. They were very articulate. They answered questions. It was fun to see the advisors’ excitement with the different products.”

It could be that one student's capstone becomes the cornerstone of another student’s in the future; that it could, as McCluskey says, “spawn another idea for the next capstone. There might be somebody interested in a project that someone else did before and they could take it to the next step.”

For now, the capstone project is offered only in the spring semester, but with growing interest, it could be offered every semester.

The hope is that each session of capstone projects will spur more inspiration and more innovation.

“I was ready for some bumps along the road,” McCluskey says. “I was able to be pretty agile and move where I saw the needs that were there. So I’m really excited to learn more from these students and watch more students grow from an idea to a product they’re proud of. So I’m excited to just have more of them.”

Besides the coursework, the Graduate School requires “a final exam that covers breadth and integration of material in the field.”  The capstone project and exam is how the department determines whether or not a student has sufficient mastery of the material to earn their master's degree.   The capstone exam occurs in the semester that a student plans to graduate and every student must pass a capstone exam to graduate.

The vast majority of successful systems engineers and engineering managers are able to draw knowledge and solutions from multiple areas.  The purpose of the capstone project and exam is for the students to demonstrate mastery of the course knowledge, and also the capability to integrate topics from multiple classes into a cohesive solution.  A successful project integrates knowledge from at least three classes on the student's program of study to create a real-world solution. For the MSSE, at least one of these three classes must include systems modeling (SIME 6460 - ME EN 6166 Model-Based Systems Engineering or SIME 6060 - ME EN 6183 Discrete Event Systems Simulation). For the MEM, at least one of these classes must include Quantitative Decision Making (SIME 6000 - ME EN 6185 Analytics for Systems Management, SIME 6050 - ME EN 6050 Operations Research for Systems, ME EN 6035 Design of Experiments, or CS 6930 Machine Learning).

The capstone project begins during the first week of the semester by the student emailing the MSSE Director (Pedro Huebner) or the MEM Director (Todd Easton).  This email describes the problem that the student plans on pursuing, along with the 3 classes that the student will apply to create a cohesive solution. The Director will assign an examiner.

During the semester, the student will research and develop a solution to the problem that incorporates and integrates knowledge from these three courses. Although a student can always reach out for assistance, it is anticipated that the student will demonstrate their mastery of the material and create their solution with minimal assistance.

The student should work with their examiner to schedule the capstone exam, which should occur at least a two weeks before the end of the semester.    A week before the capstone exam, the student should email the examiner their slides. This provides feedback to make sure that the student is reasonably prepared.  The day before the examination, the student should email the examiner with a final copy of the slides.

The capstone exam is a 20-25 minute presentation with questions where the student describes the problem, why it is important to solve, and the avenues the student would pursue to solve it.  The student does not need to actually solve the problem, describing how the student would use the tools or methods to obtain a cohesive solution is sufficient.  Besides presenting the solution methodology, the presentation must also discuss the student's ethical decision process, and any ethical implications of their proposed solution. Additionally, the presentation should discuss the student's consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

The examiner listens to the presentation and asks questions.  If the examiner determines that the person passes, then the person has completed this requirement for the MSSE or MEM.

If the examiner decides that the person didn’t pass, then a second Capstone Exam is scheduled still in the same semester.  Two examiners listen to the second exam.  If both of these examiners vote to pass, then the student has passed with a vote of 2-1, and the student has successfully completed this graduation requirement.  If either of these people vote not to pass, then the student failed the capstone project with at least two negative votes.   Failing the Capstone Exam should be viewed similar to failing a master's thesis defense.  Rules for the number of retakes and time between retakes is established by the Graduate School and will be strictly followed.

This subject provides an opportunity for students to work in teams to integrate concepts, principles, models and theories related to engineering and/or project management principles and practice, contract and procurement strategies, finance and management strategy. It will make use of business cases, or simulation of business cases that are relevant to decision making and practice in the engineering management profession.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • Work in teams to formulate business cases and proposals for engineering projects to the senior levels of organisations such as the Board of Directors
  • Identify key issues encountered in engineering management and/or engineering projects, evaluate among alternative engineering solutions and make recommendations based on best possible project
  • Devise and apply decision criteria to economic and financial analysis outcomes, and use them to make informed decisions as well as to make estimates in budgets
  • To analyse information and organise tasks to create a complete project management plan which may include but not limited to scoping, task definition, cost modelling, budgeting, risk management, procurement, schedule, sequencing of tasks and control measures
  • Demonstrate the ability to comply with legal and other compliance frameworks in the engineering management process

Engineering Capstone Project Yields Useful Tool

A piece of research equipment made by students will be used in the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering.

What started as a capstone project handed to a group of students in Texas Tech University 's Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering has yielded a useful tool for future research. 

Given the opportunity to select a project, the undergraduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering leaned into helping current and future graduate students by creating a tool that could be used in rocket research.  

The equipment built by the students is called a thrust stand, and if you're not exactly sure what that is, you're not alone. 

“Basically, a thrust stand is a mounted rocket motor,” explained Joseph Pantoya, one of the mechanical engineering students involved in the project. “It collects thrust and pressure data for a given rocket fuel. 

“What we can do is get fuels that the combustion lab makes, put them in our rocket motor and test them out in a controlled environment.”

The capstone course brought together a team of six students from diverse backgrounds to complete the final steps in their mechanical engineering degrees with their project supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Grants from sources like DOE and DOD give professors the resources needed to supply students with a hands-on learning experience while also creating something of value for the wider world. 

In this case, the thrust stand will be used by both graduate and undergraduate students in the Combustion Lab , where testing of accelerants used in various types of rockets takes place daily. The capstone project will help researchers test solid fuel combustion and better understand how those fuels can be designed to advance hypersonic combustion for propulsion applications. 

“Being able to help students in the lab publish research papers one day with something we designed is really cool,” said Juan Aguirre, another of the students involved with the thrust stand project. 

Engineering Studets

The project required working with graduate students in the lab to understand and address their needs in the design phase. Meeting the needs of those students was a critical piece of the puzzle, but it wasn't the only piece. 

Moving from the theoretical aspects of design into the actual production phase, managing a budget and producing a useful final product were all hurdles the thrust stand team had to conquer.

“We had a lot of challenges,” team member Ajibek Karatalov said. “Most of the challenges were logistical. For example, one of the main parts was shipped from Japan, and it never made it. I don't know why. So, these kinds of challenges were sort of boundaries, but I'm glad that we overcame them as a team.”

Luckily for the students, there are plenty of resources and mentors to lean on. Mechanical engineering's machine shop, for instance, provided the expertise the students needed to work through many of the technical issues along with the sage advice that comes from working with professionals. 

“I think having the shop instructors, Roy Mullins and David Meyers , they kind of gave us a new perspective on the issues we were facing,” said Jeffery (Mitch) McHugh, another team member. “They had more of a rounded perspective because they've worked in the field. That really helped us and gave us a perspective of what people that we may be working with in the future will have to say.”

The team's design was on display at the Mechanical Engineering Expo, an event held on Texas Tech's campus where, along with other teams from the department, the work of the last year is shown off to the campus community.

Mullins and the staff at the machine shop work with a wide range of students daily, helping with things like welding and machining parts that wouldn't normally be done by engineers in the field, and he was impressed with the thrust stand team's competency. 

“They've been a pretty self-sufficient group, actually,” Mullins said. “We've had to answer the usual technical questions and assist them in some machining, but for the most part, with the end design they've done really well on their own.

“It was a very specific subject. It was a research project tied to research we do in the department, so that was kind of unique in and of itself. But what really struck us about this project was it was for a research project that ties immediately to a critical problem.”

The Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program is a new 30-credit, asynchronous online degree program that provides students, most of whom are adult professionals working in a variety of heavy regulated industries, with the legal and regulatory acumen to perform their essential job functions at the highest level and to improve career outcomes.  More than 70 ABA-accredited law schools offer this degree and it has established value in the marketplace.  The program’s curriculum will be driven by and tailored to projected job growth in South Florida.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must submit their completed MLS application, Bachelor's degree transcript from a regionally accredited institution, resume, personal statement, and at least one letter of recommendation to be considered for admission.  The program targets applicants with a 3.0 minimum undergraduate GPA and professional work experience.

All students will take four required courses ("Core") including the Master’s Capstone course, during which the student will write a research paper or complete a project of equal importance. The academic Core is twelve (12) semester credits.

  • Corporate Compliance & Enterprise Risk Management, 3 credits

Students selecting an optional track will select at least three (3) elective courses in that track and  additional credits can be selected from the entire menu of electives to reach thirty (30) total  credits for the degree.

In the administrative world we inhabit, the MLS program aims to fill an educational gap for a growing body of professionals who work in “law adjacent” jobs, meaning they work in and around the law (or lawyers),  regulation, corporate compliance, and enterprise risk management every day but do not engage in the practice of law.  Think of a senior human resources director for a large company, for example, grappling with the risks of terminating a pregnant employee during a period of broad layoffs.  Or a mid-level compliance officer at a large university tasked by General Counsel’s office with updating Title IX training for employees to ensure that it aligns with expected rule changes relating to sex discrimination and assault.  Or an employee at a small start-up company who has been asked to develop the company’s first cyber risk compliance program.  Each employee would benefit from a working knowledge of law and regulation, and the degree provides a competitive advantage for employees seeking promotions within their organizations or new job opportunities.  Indeed, these are profiles of actual students who have earned the MLS degree at other law schools and credit it with helping them improve job performance and advance their careers. 

Student Learning Outcomes

The Learning Outcomes target acquisition of knowledge, critical thinking skills, legal research and analysis skills, and include an ethical component.  By the end of the program:

  • Students will be able to describe the structure and function of U.S. legal systems and, where appropriate, compare and contrast the U.S. approach with others (e.g., domestic information privacy regulation with GDPR);
  • Students will be able to identify and navigate relevant sources of law, including statutes, regulations, and cases;
  • Students will be able to conduct basic legal analysis appropriate to non-lawyers and communicate it effectively to a variety of constituents, including lawyers;
  • Students will be able to assess risks to an organization’s business goals and objectives, and develop and draft measures or strategies to mitigate the risks;
  • Students will be able to consider and evaluate the tangible benefits of using an ethical lens to drive corporate behavior.

Engineering, Computer Science Students Celebrate Innovation at 2024 Project Expo

More than 300 students from over 75 student teams participated in the College of Engineering and Computer Science’s 2024 Student Project Innovation Expo on April 26. This event showcased the creativity, problem-solving acumen and hard work of students during the academic year. It was a universitywide effort as faculty, staff and students filled the Titan Student Union Pavilion with an impressive display of student effort.

These projects were largely sourced from the four departmental Senior Design Capstone courses. Over the academic year, student teams worked tirelessly to produce a prototype that represented their proposed solution to an engineering or computer science problem. A number of these student teams are supported via ECS Corporate Project Partners. These partners, which include such companies as Disneyland, Edwards Lifesciences and Southern California Edison, pitch projects to student teams in the early fall and provide mentors to guide them through the project lifecycle. This project-based learning experience provides valuable exposure to the industry and critical skills such as collaboration, communication, teamwork, project management and more. Corporate financial support is accessible to all teams in the college.

An early morning session saw 25 teams present their projects to a panel of faculty and industry judges. Students walked judges through their design and implementation process, fielding questions on their approach and results. Judges then conferred before determining 11 projects worthy of prize designation.

The event was open to public as the CSUF community, local community colleges, corporate partners, alumni and other supporters walked the expo floor, visiting with the 75 project teams. To close out the day, a program took place announcing the award winners. The program included Sagil James, associate professor of mechanical engineering; John Faller, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Susan Barua, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science; and Amir Dabirian, provost and vice president for academic affairs. 

Following a very successful crowdfunding campaign as part of #TitansGive in March 2024, the college increased the quantity and financial amount of student awards. In total, 47 donors supported $9,000 in awards.

“Seeing the sheer number of student projects from all the departments is so inspiring,” said Barua. “It’s a testament to the creative innovation and hard work of our ECS students. We are especially grateful to our corporate partners for their mentorship and direct support as well as #TitansGive donors who funded the student awards this year.”

Winning Teams Showcase Innovative Problem-Solving

American Institute of Steel Construction Steel Bridge Competition 2024

  • Submission track: Civil and environmental engineering
  • Faculty adviser: David Naish, professor of civil and environmental engineering
  • Project background: The objective is to make a bridge that completes the requirements and specifications to complete an overall proposal for a land development project as part of the Pacific Southwest Symposium.
  • Project goals: For the project, the team focused on creating a design that would optimize deflection while having an ease of construction and cost efficiency. The main goal was to design a bridge with a load path that would reduce the forces seen on the under-truss frame and would relay more force distribution toward the stringers. Additional goals were also established through the design such as ease of construction, reduction of weight and the ease of fabrication of the design.
  • Key results: Based on the analysis of the structural integrity of the bridge using the software SAP2000, there was successful verification of the design to ideally fit within the parameters established through the AISC rules for steel bridge.

Happy Helper

  • Submission track: Mechanical engineering
  • Faculty adviser: Jin Woo Lee, assistant professor of mechanical engineering
  • Project background: In the U.S., almost 4 million people are wheelchair users and many of them struggle with stores that do not properly accommodate their specific needs to the point that they avoid going to these stores altogether. The Associated Students Inc. Food Pantry is an on-campus service that provides CSUF students with free groceries, but like many other grocery stores, wheelchair-using students may avoid this location due to lack of accommodations. In order to make The Pantry more accessible for wheelchair-using students, the group proposes a device that will allow the user to carry their groceries, so that they can easily move around The Pantry.
  • Project goals: The goal of the project is to provide a solution that accommodates the needs of wheelchair-using students to make The Pantry more accessible to a broader demographic of students. The group’s proposed design focuses on removing the basket from the user’s lap, but keeping it accessible enough to not hinder the user’s movement and keep the items within reach.
  • Key results: The prototype used aluminum extrusions for the frame because aluminum is lightweight. The wheels are made of steel so that they can withstand the load of a full basket and the rest of the device. To adjust for different wheelchairs, there is a slider mechanism that extends horizontally. The slider fits in the provided slot of the extrusion and locks by twisting the handle at the desired length. The tray is lightweight and durable enough to handle the weight of a full basket.
  • Submission track: Computer science
  • Faculty adviser: Bruce McKenzie, lecturer in computer science
  • Project background: In the modern beauty and wellness industry, individuals often struggle to find the right skincare and makeup products tailored to their specific needs. The immense variety of available options coupled with the diverse array of products catering to various purposes, can create a daunting and overwhelming experience for individuals seeking the ideal beauty regimen. With an abundance of options, consumers find themselves struggling not only with the product’s efficacy but also with the reputation, affordability and ethos of the brand and product. TrueMe seeks to revolutionize this experience by offering an innovative and personalized solution, addressing the multifaceted challenges faced by consumers in navigating the vast industry of skincare and makeup products.
  • Project goals: Provide accurate diagnoses of skin conditions through facial scanning and machine learning technology using facial datasets. We also aim to guide users to products that are tailored to their specific needs. The objectives can be broken down into data collection, algorithm development and UI design.
  • Key results: The team managed to get the app onto GooglePlay platform. TrueMe’s compatibility with iOS and Android devices from the last five years ensures accessibility to a wide range of users. By offering a user-friendly mobile application interface, TrueMe will be accessible to individuals of all ages and technological proficiencies, making personalized skincare recommendations available to a broader audience.

Faculty judges included Sampson Akwafuo, assistant professor of computer science; Bin Cong, professor of computer science; Phoolendra Mishra, chair and professor of civil and environmental engineering ; Ankita Mohapatra, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Chris Ryu, professor of computer science; and Garrett Struckhoff, professor of civil and environmental engineering. Industry judges included Peter Bilello from Cimdata; Joshua Bowen from Raytheon;  Melody Brown, who retired from Raytheon; Lauren Gonzalez from Deloitte; Samir Mulgaonkar from Caltrans; Rocio Salguero from Google; and Jose Tapia from MeruAI.

College of Engineering and Computer Science faculty members James and Faller organized the competition, supported by key staff from the dean’s office.

“It is wonderful to see the students take such pride in their work,” said James. “These students, faculty advisers and corporate mentors have put such tremendous effort into these projects. We are happy to celebrate it. I am personally grateful for the work of our faculty and industry judges in helping determine the student awards.”

Engineering enzymes to break down microplastics in sewage and wastewater

“Wastewater reuse is an important strategy in the global fight against water scarcity, but it demands that the wastewater is free of contaminants, including microplastics,” Goddard said.  

“When microplastic-contaminated wastewater is used for irrigation, microplastics will accumulate in the soil, and that has a significant impact on agricultural productivity.”

The enzyme Goddard’s lab is working with evolved within the bacteria Ideonella sakaiensis , which breaks down PET plastics in nature. It was discovered by a team of Japanese scientists outside a landfill and reported in Science in 2016 . Since then, scientists have been scrambling to discover and engineer similar enzymes that can biodegrade plastics more quickly and under a range of conditions. Goddard’s goal is to engineer enzymes that can break down microplastics into small products that can be used as energy sources for bacteria used in the wastewater treatment process. 

Think of these enzymes like precisely folded beaded necklaces, Goddard said: they’re made up of strings of amino acids that can be changed so they fold in different ways, depending on what you want them to do. But while the metaphor is simple, the science certainly isn’t: adapting these enzymes to work in the conditions present in sewage sludge requires genome sequencing the enzymes, running those sequences through complex software packages to identify which amino acids are most responsible for performing the tasks you want them to perform, engineering a huge number of potentially useful variants , and then building and testing those variants in the lab. In addition, the conditions that exist in wastewater treatment are very different from conditions where the wild enzyme evolved – and can vary significantly from one facility to another – with wastewater treatment having higher temperatures and levels of organic material, and variable pH levels. 

Goddard’s lab is also working on a variant enzyme that can attach onto materials common in wastewater filters, which would enable recovery and re-use of these enzymes. 

Seed funding for this project was provided by the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station (Cornell AES), using Federal Capacity Funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Now, Goddard has received a half million dollar grant from NIFA to continue developing and testing these specialized enzymes to improve their performance and efficiency in real-world conditions. 

Since beginning her research on this topic in 2018, the need for microplastic removal has only increased. A groundbreaking study in January reported that there is 10 to 100 times as much microplastic in bottled water as previously believed, and the United Nations is right now debating an international treaty to limit plastic pollution . 

“Water is a commodity that we know very well is limited,” Goddard said. “We need to figure out how to remove microplastics from wastewater for it to be a viable alternative to freshwater use. In addition to health and environmental concerns, this is essential for the long-term economic sustainability of agriculture.”
