Osei Kwame, popularly known as “Kwame Despite” is a Ghanaian Entrepreneur, Philanthropist , and Chief Executive Officer of Despite Group of Companies.

“Kwame Despite” was born on February 2, 1962, at Wiamoase in the Ashanti region. Moreover, he is one of the most successful African businessmen who started from very humble beginnings. Even though, he owns a conglomerate of media houses in the country, the soft-spoken media mogul is rarely seen or heard on radio.

Kwame Despite – Early Life and Trip to Nigeria

When Kwame Despite started his business life as a petty trader in padlocks, cassettes, and feeding bottles at Dunkwa Offinso, knowing his poor family background, he was determined to make a difference through hard work. Nevertheless, due to the hardship and famine, which occurred in the country in the 80’s, he moved to Nigeria to seek greener pastures. However, sadly, he was part of numerous Ghanaian Immigrants in Nigeria, who were deported in 1983 because of political tension.

Kwame Despite – Back Home

His return home was not a triumphant one due to the haste and run for life. He had with him just a chainsaw and a trident cassette player, so he decided to go into lumbering. Consequently, he didn’t have a lot of experience in that field, as a result, he performed abysmally and incurred some losses. Be that as it may, all young entrepreneurs must learn, failure doesn’t mean the end of life, but it has a lot of lessons to learn to achieve the ultimate success.

Furthermore, Kwame Despite was not discouraged about the turn of events and made the decision to return to his usual cassette business. The rest is history, once he came back to what was familiar to him.

Kwame Despite – Success Story and Aspirations

Whether, if it was by magic or probably destiny, with hard work and commitments, Despite found success in the sale of the cassettes and established his first FM station, “Peace FM” in Accra in 1999.

The most compelling story about the cassette seller, who once lived in poverty, now, he is the CEO of Despite Group, which includes three commercial FM stations, UTV, Best Point Savings & Loans, Salt Production Company, and so many others.

The point often overlooked is that sometimes you need to switch business or change your business strategy to be able to achieve greatness. He is the co-founder and Vice Chairman of Best Point Savings and Loans Ltd, a very renowned financial institution in the country.

Dr. Osei Kwame Despite, was born as Osei Kwame at Agona Wiamoase in the Ashanti Region. He grew up in a middle-class home in the village and always yearned for a better life.

Despite was born on the 2nd February 1962. He celebrated his 60th birthday few days ago and brought the nation to a standstill.

Osei Kwame Despite’s education background from elementary is not known but he has an honorary degree from a British university.

He was conferred this title because of his entrepreneurship efforts, philanthropy and contribution to the growth of the economy.

Despite also has a Honorary Doctorate Degree in Human Resource from Canterbury University, Honorary Ambassador of Business Entrepreneur in West Africa (Ambassador) and Honorary man of the moment, Ghana, West Africa.

Despite began hustling at a young age and started trading in anything he could to survive. He sold music cassettes, feeding bottles, padlocks and other goods at Dunkwa-Offinso in the Central Region of Ghana.

Live in the village was not lucrative so Despite migrated to Lagos, Nigeria after many years of struggle to search for greener pastures.

His journey was however cut short in 1983 when he had to flee from Nigeria because of political unrest in the country. He returned to Ghana with a dream and a Chain-saw machine.

He later started selling cassettes until he diversified his business and ventured into broadcasting by establishing an Akan speaking radio station, Peace FM in 1999 at Mile 7 Junction. The radio station became a national favorite because it used the Akan language in broadcasting as opposed to the Queen’s language.

This was the beginning of his media empire and financial breakthrough.

Osei-Kwame is the owner of the Despite Company Ltd which is a trading company and with subsidiaries in the media industry namely, PEACE FM which is the largest and the most popular FM station in the country, OKAY FM station, NEAT FM both in Accra and HELLO FM station in Kumasi.

Dr. Osei-Kwame set-up NEAT FOODS LTD, which processes our local plantain, cocoyam, maize and palm fruits such as Neat Fufu, which is has become a preference to the traditional fufu. He also owns a manufacturing company ANTONA FOODS LTD, producing the ever popular THIS WAY chocolate drink and other flavors including the Motherlac cereal for children. Despite is a co-founder of a Salt mining company, U2 Salt, which is located at Winneba.

Dr. Osei-Kwame with his partner co-founded the United Television (UTV) which is leading TV station in the country.

He is the co-founder and Vice Chairman of Best Point Savings and Loans Ltd, a very renowned financial institution in the country.

Dr. Osei Kwame Despite ranks as one of the millionaires in Ghana. His real net worth is not known but he was placed 3rd in Ghana’s richest men as of 2019.

Photos of Despite’s first wife surfaced on social media in 2020 when his first son, Kennedy Osei tied the knot.

His second wife, Aunty Ewurama , also surfaced on social media few months ago when the business mogul donated a children’s ward at the 37 Military Hospital.

He is blessed with 5 strong sons.
