The University of Toronto is a public research university in Ontario, Canada.

The university offers a wide range of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. These scholarships are available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and international students.

1.Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships 

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is offered to international students undertaking postgraduate programmes within the field of health research, natural sciences or engineering and social sciences and humanities. 

Apply by the end of April to stand the chance to receive this scholarship of up to CA$70,000 per year.

2. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship is one of the most prominent scholarship offered by the Canadian government. This fully funded scholarship is open to all international PhD students.

International doctoral scholarship

This scholarship is intended for international doctoral students. An important contribution to the financing of their studies.

The information on this page is subject to change without notice and does not represent a commitment from the University of Ottawa.

As of May 2023

A value of $45,000 over five (5) years, the International Doctoral Scholarship supports  full-time international students, admitted in May 2023 or beyond, during their doctoral studies. A maximum value of $3,000 per term, for 15 consecutive terms, will be credited to the student account. Please note that the scholarship will only be paid if international tuition fees are charged.

Before May 2023

If you began your  full-time doctoral studies at uOttawa before May 2023  and you’ve received the International Doctoral Scholarship, your tuition fees are equivalent to those for Canadian students residing outside Ontario.

NB This scholarship cannot be combined with the Differential Tuition Fee Waiver or the Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship.

Nomination process

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota * to host Vanier scholars. Candidates should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto (U of T) is a fully funded scholarship program for graduate studies at Canada’s leading institution of learning, discovery, and knowledge creation. U of T is proud to be one of the world’s top research-intensive universities, driven to invent and innovate.

Prospective Mastercard Foundation Scholars will develop their capacity and networks to engage in diverse healthcare professions and healthcare ecosystems in Africa. Upon completion of the program, it’s expected that Mastercard Foundation Scholars will return to their home countries and engage in self-employment or work in a range of health-related professions to advance the health outcomes within their countries upon completion.

Scholarship Benefits

Scholars in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at U of T are provided with full financial assistance for tuition, travel expenses to Canada (including obtaining a passport, visa application fees), housing, course materials, health insurance, laptop, food, books, and other expenses for the duration of their graduate degrees.

The application deadline for the 2024-2025 Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Toronto was on November 15, 2023, therefore we are no longer accepting applications. 

Recruitment for the 2025-2026 academic year will commence in September, 2024.

Jessica Kumah | ghana

My name is Jessica Kumah, and I am from Ghana. I discovered a strong academic interest and sense of purpose after completing my final year undergraduate thesis at Kwame Nkrumah University of Sci. and Tech. (KNUST) in Ghana. However, at that time, I was unsure about how to pursue and fund further studies in this newfound area of interest.

Thankfully, a colleague introduced me to the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship program at the University of Toronto, which surprisingly aligned perfectly with my newfound passion for environmental health. Thanks to the Mastercard Foundation, my purpose became a reality, and the MPH Environmental Health program at the University of Toronto has exceeded all my expectations.

The comprehensive training I am currently receiving at UofT has not only enhanced my knowledge but has also provided me with a broader perspective on how to address environmental health challenges. Equipped with this invaluable education, I am now prepared to positively contribute to communities in Africa and the world at large by tackling pressing issues related to environmental health and its global implications facing our world today.

My name is Isdora Bonaventure Msigwa. I am pursuing a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Scholarship.

Being an Mastercard Foundation scholar in a world’s renowned university has been an enriching experience that allowed me to explore my potential further and reach out for my dreams. An IDSA will be provided automatically to eligible international students registered full time in a doctoral program at the University of Waterloo. Students must meet the academic progress requirements of their program, not have outstanding probationary admission requirements, and not be concurrently receiving tuition awards (e.g., PSI or Lazaridis Tuition Awards) or funding which exceeds the minimum PhD funding value from any government/industry sponsorship (except in the cases where an explicit MOU (or MOA) exists that specifies IDSA inclusion (e.g., Conacyt)), or self-funding.

International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE)

Effective May 1, 2019 (spring 2019 admissions cycle), the International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE) will be awarded to eligible international master’s students normally entering a research-based graduate program at the University of Waterloo. The award will be valued at $2,500 per term for a maximum of five terms. Faculties will nominate eligible students based on their award allocation and select recipients based on academic excellence as demonstrated through their application for admission to the graduate program and other criteria as identified by the Faculties.

The OGS program is funded by the provincial government to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels. It is a merit-based scholarship and awards are available to students in all disciplines of academic study. A small number of these awards are available to international students. Interested students can refer to our OGS web page for eligibility criteria and Waterloo’s internal application process.

The Trudeau Scholars Program grants up to fifteen new scholarships every year to outstanding doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities. The Foundation supports doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau Scholars are actively engaged in their fields, in which they are expected to become leading national and international figures.

Trudeau Scholars are selected through a process that involves nomination by a university, an application supported by references and transcripts, internal and external review and selection panels, an interview, and the formal approval of the Board of Directors.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years . 

The scholarships are administered by Canada's three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) , the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) .

Students wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS must do so through the Canadian university to which they are applying for doctoral studies. In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Based on university-assigned allocations, universities forward a limited number of nominations to the appropriate federal research granting agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) annually.

If a student is successful in the Vanier CGS competition, they must hold their award at the university that nominated them. The Vanier CGS cannot be taken to another university as it is not transferrable. Udem exemption scholarship for international students.

Université de Montréal has established the UdeM exemption scholarship program intended for international students.

To support talents from all around the world

The UdeM exemption scholarship program is designed to support international candidates in their university studies. Starting in the fall of 2020, they could benefit from an exemption from the tuition fees normally charged to international students. The granting of scholarships continues for the winter 2024, summer 2024, fall 2024 and winter 2025 sessions.

The goal of this program is to help the best talent from around the world attend one of the finest francophone research universities in the world. In turn, these international students will help fulfil our educational mission by enriching the cultural diversity of the Université de Montréal community.

Who can benefit from this scholarship program?

The UdeM exemption scholarship is intended for international students (except French and French-speaking Belgian students). To be eligible, the candidate must:

• have received an offer of admission  to a study program at UdeM as of Fall 2020
• have valid study authorizations  (CAQ and study permit) for all sessions of their study program. For more information, please see the web page on immigration procedures
• be continuously enrolled full time (unless absence is approved) for their entire study program
• not  benefit from another form of tuition fee exemption
• not enroll in an independent study program
• not be admitted to the following undergraduate programs starting with the Winter 2024 session: certificate, major, minor, short program and preparatory year program for university studies

If one of the above conditions is not met, the UdeM exemption scholarship may be withdrawn.

Amount of the award

Please note that the amounts indicated below are in Canadian dollars.

You could benefit from the UdeM exemption scholarship if you are admitted to a degree program, namely a bachelor's degree.

The excellence of your academic record is the only evaluation criterion to determine the value of the scholarship . This assessment is made based on the transcripts provided during the admission application. The results of the assessment will determine the amount to which you may be entitled. If after the assessment, your file does not qualify for level A or B, you will not benefit from the UdeM exemption scholarship.

• Level A: $13,340.40 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $6,670.20 per session (15 credits) or $444.68 per credit
• Level B: $6,357.60 per year (2 sessions, equivalent to 30 credits) or $3,178.80 per session (15 credits) or $211.92 per credit

These amounts are applied to tuition fees of $27,101.70 per year (30 credits) *.

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a partial exemption scholarship from the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

• Non-research: $10,474.65 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,491.55 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $232.77 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $30,829.50 per year (45 credits) *.

• Research: $10,347.75 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $3,449.25 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $229.95 per credit
• Research (starting with the fall 2024 session) : $15,149.70 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits), $5,049.90 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $336.66 per credit

This amount is applied to tuition fees of $29,592 per year (45 credits) *.

For the writing and correction sessions, the same tuition fees as those charged to Québec students will be applied.

To support you in your graduate studies as an international student, a complete waiver of the additional tuition fees normally charged to international students is available.

This exemption bursary allows you to benefit from the same tuition fees as Québec graduate studies students.

• $22,241.25 per year (3 sessions, equivalent to 45 credits) or $7,413.75 per session (equivalent to 15 credits) or $494.25 per credit

This amount is applied to the tuition fees of $26,562.60 per year (45 credits) *.

How can I receive this scholarship?

2. Follow-up on your file and receive an offer of admission

After submitting your application, you'll be able to consult your application and receive your admission notice in your Centre étudiant.

3. Accept the offer of admissions to start the evaluation.

You don’t have to apply for a UdeM Exemption Scholarship. New candidates’ files will be evaluated to determine their eligibility and the amount of their exemption scholarship.

4. Receive the notice of award with the amount

After receiving your admissions offer, the Université de Montréal will promptly inform you, by email, of the amount of the scholarship to which you are entitled. Print and keep this document in a safe place. It will be useful for future reference.

• IELTS Academic: At least IELTS 6.5 overall. The IELTS certificate must still be valid at the scholarship application deadline.
• Degree from an English-speaking country: Applicants who are studying or have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from one of the following English-speaking countries do NOT need to submit the IELTS or TOEFL certificate. The countries include Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States, or the United Kingdom (Britain, Ireland, Scotland or Wales).

Application tracks in 2024

• Track 1:  For applicants who have already obtained letters of admission to study a Master’s/ Ph.D. program in AY 2024/25 in a supported field or research area at a university from the list of Targeted Universities.
• Track 2 : For applicants who have not been accepted to study a Master’s/ Ph.D. program at any of the targeted universities and choose to apply for the scholarship before applying for admission to study in AY 2025/26.
