A Letter to God is a story written by G.L. Fuentes which depicts the firm faith of a poor and simple-minded farmer named Lencho in God. Lencho was a poor yet dedicated farmer. He was hoping for a decent harvest. To his dismay, a hailstorm suddenly destroyed all his crops and the harvest completely. Seeing the damage, the poor farmer was taken aback and felt sad. However, he had a strong faith in God. He was a learned man who knew how to read and write. Due to his straightforward nature, he was certain that God would definitely help him. Thus, he decided to draft a letter to God while addressing his financial concerns to him. In the letter, he requested God to send him one hundred pesos to sow his fields again and save his family from starvation. Soon he wrote a letter and went to the post office. He placed a stamp on the letter and dropped it into the mailbox.

When the postman took out the letter from the letterbox, he laughed heartily after reading it. He immediately rushed to the postmaster and showed him the strange letter. The postmaster read the letter but laughed out loud when he noticed that the letter was addressed to God. However, he was also moved by the faith of the farmer. He lauded the poor farmer’s unquestionable faith in God and decided to help him. Soon, he asked the employees of the post office to contribute some money as charity and also gave a part of his salary so that Lencho’s faith in God is not shaken. However, the money collected was a little less than what Lencho had requested from God. The postmaster then put all the money collected in an envelope and addressed it to the poor farmer.

The following Sunday, Lencho went to the post office to check if there was a letter for him. The postmaster gently handed over the letter to him. Lencho was not surprised at all to see the letter with money inside the envelope. He confidently opened the envelope to count the money but became angry when he saw that there were only seventy pesos in it. He was sure that God could have never made such a grave mistake. He instantly went to the window to ask for paper and ink and wrote another letter to God, and dropped it into the letterbox.

When Lencho had left the place, the postmaster opened and read his letter immediately. In it, Lencho had raised a complaint to God that he had initially requested one hundred pesos, but he was upset to find seventy pesos only. Furthermore, he criticized the post office employees and felt that they must have stolen the remaining thirty pesos from his envelope. He urged God to send him the rest of the money since he was in urgent need of it. However, he requested God not to send the money through the mail because Lencho thought that the post office employees were ‘a bunch of crooks’ who might have stolen the remaining money from the envelope.

Ans: When the postmaster first saw the address, he laughed at the stupidity of the sender. But after that he thought it may imply something serious and hence out of curiosity checked the letter. After going through the letter, the feelings of the writer really touched him, and he decided to help the writer somehow. For this, the postman contributed a part of his salary, and collected some money from his acquaintances, friends and relatives, and sent it to the writer of the letter(Lencho).

Ans: Lencho had blind faith in God, and he was sure God would address his problem. He was not surprised to find the letter with money in it.

9. What made him angry?

Ans: After he received the letter, he started counting the money that God sent him. On counting he found out that he had received only seventy pesos. Since he demanded a hundred pesos and did not receive the exact amount, he was furious. But he trusted God and knew God would not turn him down, so he concluded that the  post office employees stole his money.

10. Who does Lencho have complete faith in? Which sentences in the story tell you this?

Ans: Lencho had blind faith and trust in God, and he knew he would address and find a solution to all his problems. The following sentences from the story tells us about the same:

a. But in the hearts of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley, there was a single hope: help from God.

b. All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope: the help of God, whose eyes, as he had been instructed, see everything, even what is deep in one’s conscience.

c. “God,” he wrote, “if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.”

d. God could not have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.

e. He wrote ‘To God’ on the envelope, put the letter inside and, still troubled, went to town.

f. It said: “God: of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached me. Send me the rest since I need it very much.”

11. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter ‘God’?

Ans: Humans always had faith in God, and they rely on him for their problems. But Lencho’s faith was beyond anyone else’s. He wrote a letter to God and demanded money from him as if asking a friend for financial assistance. Since the postmaster was touched by Lencho’s letter to God, he wanted Lencho to maintain the faith he had in the almighty, hence, he sent him seventy pesos and signed the letter as God.

12. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why/Why not?

Ans: No, Lencho had trust and faith in God. When he received the letter, he was so sure that it was sent by God that he did not even bother to find out who actually sent the amount to him. He was so sure about it that he even went to the post office to fight with the postmaster about the amount being less than a hundred pesos because he knew God will not leave his wish partially unfulfilled.

13. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? (Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected.)

Ans: Lencho blames the postmaster for stealing money from his envelope that was sent by God since he received thirty pesos less than asked. The irony of the situation was that it was not God who actually sent him the amount but the postmaster himself, whom he was accusing of the crime.

He was very naive and unquestioning in his reasoning by displaying such blind faith in God.

15. There are two kinds of conflict in the story: between humans and nature, and between humans themselves. How are these conflicts illustrated?

Ans: Lencho’s destruction of crops by nature is a sheer display of power that nature has over us. His crops were ripe and ready for harvest but were destroyed by the hailstorm and he could not do anything about it apart from cursing his luck and blaming God for it. He was very gloomy after the incident and had no resort other than writing a letter to God, complaining about the same and asking him to compensate.

Conflict between human and human is displayed by the conflict the postmaster and Lencho had. The postmaster felt bad for Lencho for having written a letter to God and having such blind faith in him. He did not want to shatter his hope and hence collected seventy pesos for him and sent it under the name of God. His good deed was not reciprocated well by Lencho, and he accused him of stealing money from his envelope. It shows the deep distrust humans have amongst themselves.

In the first example, ‘hope’ is a verb which means you wish for something to happen. In the second example it is a noun meaning a chance for something to happen.

18. Relative Clauses Look at these sentences 

(a) All morning Lencho — who knew his fields intimately — looked at the sky. 

(b) The woman, who was preparing supper, replied, “Yes, God willing.’’ 

The italicised parts of the sentences give us more information about Lencho and the woman. We call them relative clauses. Notice that they begin with a relative pronoun who. Other common relative pronouns are whom, whose, and which. 

The relative clauses in (a) and (b) above are called non-defining, because we already know the identity of the person they describe. Lencho is a particular person, and there is a particular woman he speaks to. We don’t need the information in the relative clause to pick these people out from a larger set. 

A non-defining relative clause usually has a comma in front of it and a comma after it (some writers use a dash (—) instead, as in the story). If the relative clause comes at the end, we just put a full stop.

19. Using Negatives for Emphasis We know that sentences with words such as no, not or nothing show the absence of something, or contradict something. For example: 

(a) This year we will have no corn. (Corn will be absent) 

(b) The hail has left nothing. (Absence of a crop)

(c) These aren’t raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. (Contradicts the common idea of what the drops of water falling from the sky are). 

But sometimes negative words are used just to emphasise an idea. Look at these sentences from the story: 

(d) Lencho…had done nothing else but see the sky towards the northeast. (He had done only this) 

(e) The man went out for no other reason than to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body. (He had only this reason) 

(f) Lencho showed not the slightest surprise on seeing the money. (He showed no surprise at all) 

Now look back at example (c). Notice that the contradiction in fact serves to emphasise the value or usefulness of the rain to the farmer.

Find sentences in the story with negative words, which express the following ideas emphatically.

1. The trees lost all their leaves.

Ans: Not a leaf remained on the trees.

2. The letter was addressed to God himself.

Ans: It was nothing less than a letter to God.

3. The postman saw this address for the first time in his career.

Ans: Never in his career as a postman had he known that address.

20. Metaphors The word metaphor comes from a Greek word meaning ‘transfer’. Metaphors compare two things or ideas: a quality or feature of one thing is transferred to another thing. Some common metaphors are 

the leg of the table: The leg supports our body. So the object that supports a table is described as a leg. 

the heart of the city: The heart is an important organ in the centre of our body. So this word is used to describe the central area of a city. In pairs, find metaphors from the story to complete the table below. Try to say what qualities are being compared. One has been done for you.

Ans:   There are various instances in life where we can be in great difficulty and only a miracle could save us. 

I had a graded college project in which we were asked to make groups and volunteer. My friends and I were already late for work, so we planned a distribution event only about a week before the deadline. We did not check the weather report for the day and went ahead, feeling content about our plan. Unfortunately, on the day of the distribution, the sky was overcast with clouds and there was no chance we could proceed with the distribution. We just went ahead in the hope that it would not rain for the time being. But the clouds and wind declared otherwise. 

We left our homes but were still very anxious seeing the dark clouds in the sky. We started our distribution along the streets, praying the whole time. I believe it was a miracle that saved our day, and it didn't rain for the two hours we were proceeding with the work. After we all reached back home it started raining heavily. It appeared as if the rain was waiting for us.

A Letter to God Summary of the Lesson

Lencho was a hard-working farmer. His house was situated at a low hill in the valley. From this height, he could see his crops and the river flowing. He was expecting a good harvest but the earth needed a downpour. Since morning Lencho was looking at the sky. At the time of dinner, he told his wife that they were going to get rain.

During the meal, big drops of rain began to fall. The air was fresh and sweet. He came outside to feel the rain on his body. He was happy. He called them new coins. Very soon his field was full of rain. But suddenly the rain turned into large hailstone.

It hailed for an hour. His garden, house, the hillside, field had heavy hailing. It looked as if it were covered with salt. Not a leaf was there on the trees. His com was totally mined. Lencho’s soul was filled with sadness. He spoke that they would all go hungry.

Lencho was deeply troubled at heart. He uttered that there was none to help them. All the residents of the valley had a single hope. It was the help from God. Lencho spoke, “That’s what they say, no one dies of hunger”.

All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope, i.e., the help of God. He believed, “The eyes of God see everything even what is deep in one’s conscience. He would not let them die of hunger”.

The following Sunday Lencho went to the post office. He wrote a letter to God. He wrote “God, if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year. I need a hundred pesos to sow my field again and to live until the crop comes. The hailstorm has destroyed everything”.

He addressed the letter to God. He affixed a stamp on the envelope and put it into the mail box.

A postman got this letter and laughed heartily on seeing the address. He showed it to the postmaster. The postmaster was a very friendly man. On seeing the letter, he became serious. He remarked about the writer’s great faith in God.

In order not to shake the writer’s faith, the postmaster decided to answer the letter. He collected money from his employees and friends. He gave some part of his salary. But he could not gather hundred pesos. It was a little more than half.

So he put the money in an envelope and addressed to Lencho. He put a signature “God”. The next Sunday, Lencho reached the post office somewhat earlier. He asked for his letter. The postman gave him the letter. The postmaster was watching everything.

Lencho was very much confident of God’s help. Immediately he opened the letter and found the money. But he became angry on finding less money. He remarked that God could not make such a mistake of sending him less money. Immediately Lencho went up to the window.

He wrote a letter, fixed a stamp and put it into the mail box. The postmaster went to open it. He read the letter. It said “God, only seventy pesos have reached me. Send the rest not through the mail because the post office employees are a bunch of crooks”.

‘A letter to God’ is a story of extreme faith in God. Through this story, the writer, G.L. Fuentes has tried to depict the invincible and insurmountable faith in God of a simple poor farmer, Lencho. He was a poor, honest and hard-working farmer. Hence, he wrote a letter to God and asked God to send him money.

There are three major characters in the story.

• Ungrateful: Lencho is innocent and naïve, yet ungrateful. Instead of being thankful to God for helping him, he complained about the missing thirty pesos.
• A True Believer: He truly believes in the all-encompassing power of God.
• Materialistic: He thinks rain looks like new silver coins. He also thinks of his harvest in terms of profit or loss.

Lencho’s wife

• Faithful: Lencho’s wife too is a believer of God and has immense faith in his doings.
• Practical: When Lencho is dreaming of a good harvest, she replies ‘God willing’ knowing that rains can be unpredictable.
• A Good Housekeeper: She takes care of the house and the children.

The Postmaster

• Helpful: The Postmaster is a kind and helpful man. He decides to help Lencho in his time of need.
• Understanding: He didn’t wish for Lencho’s faith in God to be shaken, and thus, helps him by arranging the money that he had actually asked from God.
• Generous: The Postmaster’s natural instinct was to help Lencho in however way he can. He not only asked others for help, but also gave away a part of his salary to Lencho to help him.

LITERARY DEVICES

There are two main literary elements in the story.

The Use of Metaphor

Fuentes makes use of metaphor in the story to draw unlikely comparisons between things. Some examples of metaphor are:

• In the phrase ‘Huge mountains of clouds’ the author draws a comparison between ‘hugeness’ of mountains with the clouds.
• The author compares the raindrops with new coins. This shows that Lencho is hoping the harvest will bring him money (new coins)
• The hailstones have been called ‘the frozen pearls’. Lencho was unhappy with the beautiful hailstones as they destroyed his yield.
• Through the phrase ‘a plague of locusts’, locusts have been compared with a disaster that spreads rapidly and destroys everything, just like the hailstorm.
• The author compares Lencho with an ox in the phrase ‘An ox of a man’, meaning, he is a hardworking man, just like an ox works hard in the fields.
• Irony is when words are used to express something that is very different from the actual intent.
• The author has given the story an ironic ending.
• The people at the post office had helped Lencho out of genuine intent, but ironically, Lencho blames them for stealing his thirty pesos.
• Lencho believes God had sent him the money but it is actually the people at the post office had sent the money.

He is a strong and hardworking farmer. The only thing the earth and the fields needed was heavy rain. At least, a shower was very necessary. Lencho’s older boys were working in the field. He could see huge mountains of clouds in the north-east. It gladdened his heart. As predicted by him, big drops of rain began to fall. The raindrops were like ‘new coins’.

Unfortunately, Lencho’s happiness was short-lived. Suddenly a strong wind began to blow. Along with the rain, very large hailstones began to fall. Within an hour the house, the garden, the hillside, and the fields were covered with a white sheet of hailstones. The leaves, trees and the flowers were destroyed. The hail had nothing left. The corn was totally destroyed. That year they would have no corn. They would survive on the mercy of God. All such dismal(depression) prospects worried Lencho.

But when he counted the money, he became angry. He was sure that someone had stolen thirty pesos out of the hundred sent by God. Who could be they except the employees at the post office? Therefore, he wrote a second letter to God to send him the rest of the money immediately. He asked him not to send money through the mail as the post office employees were a ‘bunch of crooks.’

The situation at the end becomes quite ironic. It is ironic that men who collected pesos to help Lencho were called `a bunch of crooks, by him. He couldn’t know till the end who had really sent that money.

17. Draw a character sketch of Lencho, the farmer in about 120-150 words.

Answer:  Lencho was a simple man as farmers usually are everywhere. He was a man of limited means and earned his living by farming his fields. His older sons helped him in farming activities. His wife did the same but also managed the kitchen and other household works. Lencho was highly religious. So was his wife. He had unshaken faith in God. He believed that God always helps people with a clear conscience. Therefore, when he lost all hopes and he and his family were on the verge of starvation, he looked towards God for help. His deep faith in God even impressed the postmaster who decided to help him. He was strong and sturdy like an ox. Not only that, he worked day and night in the fields. Being a farmer, he had a deep knowledge about the weather, the winds and the rains of his region.

He was simple-hearted. He was rustic and inhabitable and thought. He was a little educated to write a letter. He shows his innocence by trying to have a correspondence(connection) with God directly. He wrote ‘To God’ on the top of the envelope and posted the letter into the mail-box.

While he had unshaken faith in God, he mistrusted the motives of men. He could never know and nor did he ever try to know who had sent him those seventy pesos to help him. It is quite ironic that he abused his helpers by calling them ‘a bunch of crooks’.

18. Give a character sketch of the Postmaster in your own words. Don’t you think that he should have deserved a better recognition and appreciation of his act of charity?

Answer:  It takes all kinds of people to make this world. The postmaster has all that is good in human thinking and behaviour. He has a thorough understanding of a sharp, sympathetic and sensitive mind. He knows how the mind of a God-fearing rustic like Lencho works. He is sensitive and sympathetic to human feelings. He doesn’t want to break the deep faith of the writer in God. The fat and friendly postmaster had a large heart too. First, he laughed at the man who wanted to have a direct correspondence with God. But he soon became serious. After reading the letter, he was deeply moved and impressed by Lencho’s faith in God.

He knew that merely goodwill was not sufficient. The farmer needed financial help. So he collected a sum of 70 pesos from his employees. He also contributed a part of his salary. He did so as to keep Lencho’s faith in God. He wrote a single word as a signature: God.

It is ironic that a simpleton(innocent person) like Lencho could never know his real benefactor(supporting financially). Nor did he ever try to know how and from whom he received those seventy pesos. Naturally, his work of charity deserved better recognition and appreciation from the receiver. Ironically, the postmaster and his employees who had sent seventy pesos were called ‘a bunch of crooks’ by Lencho.

(A) The postmaster was a person of deep faith in humanity. He appreciated that Lencho had such a strong faith in God that he had written a letter addressed to ‘God’ in order to ask him for help. The postmaster wished to emulate the same faith in himself. He decided to help Lencho to keep his belief in God intact. He didn’t want Lencho’s faith to be shaken.

(B) Lencho on the other hand, had a deep faith in God but no faith in humanity. When in despair of the destruction caused to his crops by the hailstorm, his only ray of hope was God. So, he asked God to send him hundred pesos. But his faith in God was so blind that due to it, he blamed the post office employees who helped him like God’s messengers.

3. Lencho says, “These aren’t raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. The big drops are ten cent pieces and the little ones are fives.” Examine the given comparison based on your reading of the story ‘A Letter to God’.

Answer – Lencho was a poor hard-working farmer who had worked in his corn field like an ox of a man. He feared that all of his hard work will go void if it doesn’t rain as rain was necessary for his crops to yield a good harvest for the year. When he saw big black clouds in the sky, Lencho got very happy. His hope for a good rainfall increased. So, when the rain started, Lencho compared the raindrops to the new coins as the rain would ensure a good harvest for him which would in turn, mean money for him. He compared the big raindrops with the ten cents pieces and the little ones with the five cent pieces as the more it would rain, the more money he would get and vice-versa. He did the comparison in enthusiasm, hoping to make a good fortune.

Answer – Lencho was a destitute peasant whose crops were totally destroyed due to the heavy hailstorm. He had to suffer a huge loss due to it. He was petrified of the fact that he and his family would have to spend the entire year hungry as they had nothing to survive on. In the moment of despair, his only ray of hope was God. He believed that God would help him in this plight. He had firm faith in God and believed that God would not let him and his family die of hunger.

Yes, I do have a strong belief in God like Lencho. I believe that God is the only one who never disappoints a person at the time of predicament. Lencho’s reaction towards the post office employees was not right. He doubted them to be the ‘crooks’ who have stolen the money but in fact, it were the post office employees only who had helped Lencho by donating their share of money for him.

5. The postmaster was a representative of God. Critically examine this statement in the context of your understanding of ‘A Letter to God”. [CBSE Question Bank 2021]

Answer – The Postmaster was a representative of God. He was an epitome of humanity. At first, when he saw the letter addressed to ‘God’, on he laughed at it but then after reading it, he was amazed by Lencho’s deep faith in God. So, he decided to help him on behalf of God. He decided to collect some money by asking his fellow post office employees and his friends to contribute their share to it.

He himself donated a part of his own salary to the cause. He wanted to help Lencho to keep his belief in God intact. He didn’t want Lencho’s faith to be shaken.

Lencho’s unshakeable faith in God made the postmaster, a representative of God. God ultimately helped Lencho through the postmaster.

A Letter to God: Thank You For Everything You Have Given Me In Life

I know you would be surprised seeing me address you through this letter. Usually you find me in a different set-up where I have a bell and joss sticks in my hand and you sit decorated in the beautiful temple of my house. That set-up is more formal and elaborate. This one is more real and gives me a chance to write my heart out.

You must be wondering why I am writing a letter to you. As if my daily prayers and wishes weren’t enough that I have another wish ready for you. In my daily prayers, I chant, sing for you and express my hopes which I know only you can fulfil. But today I am writing this letter to express my gratitude. Apart from my existence, there are several things in my life that I am grateful for. I have never been that expressive when it came to saying thank you, so today I am taking this opportunity to do the same.

Let me begin my list of thank you from the very start-

1. You have always been very kind. I am born in the most beautiful family. My mom is my source of inspiration; dad my pillar of strength and sister my advisor. They all love me and help me understand my life, which is given by you. Thank you for making me a part of a such a special family.

2. You always helped me overcome my inner fears. As a young girl, I was an anxious student always worrying about each and everything in life. Before every exam I would cry thinking I would fail. But you always helped me give my best. Thank you for letting me reach my full potential and emerge as a confident student.

3. You have always heard my dreams and fulfilled them. Getting into a college of my choice that too for my favourite course, was nothing less than a dream. But it came true! And I got to live my dream in the best possible way. Thank you for letting it happen without many obstacles.

4. You have always made things easy for me. I never thought I would ever fall in love. But I did, that too with the right person. I believed with all the cultural differences we would face a lot of hindrance getting married, but we didn’t. Thank you for keeping things in our stride and making it such a smooth ride.

5. You have always been very generous when it came to fulfil my wishes. So, when I prayed for one little bundle of joy, you blessed me with two. Never in my life I imagined that I would have twins. Thank you for gifting me the two most precious souls in life.

6. You have always shown me the right path. Now when my kids are growing, I find it difficult to maintain my sanity with their growing needs and demands. But even in the most stressful moments, a mere thought of you keeps me sane. Thank you for instilling some sense in me and help me cope with such situations in the best possible way.

7. You have always kept me safe. There have been times when I have been off guard, unprepared for the dreadful situations in life. But I could always feel the invisible shelter that you created to keep me protected. Thank you for keeping me safe and secure.

8. You have always provided me peace. When everything around me turn negative, I gain strength thinking about you. Even a two minute of meditation helps me to come out of all the negative emotions and retain my calm. Thank you for keeping me positive and hopeful even in the toughest of  situations.

9. You have always been my silent listener. I never had to shout or cry aloud. You have heard things that I sometimes just whispered in my mind. Thank you for hearing even the most silent prayers of my heart .

10. You have always been there when I needed you. I may not speak to you everyday. I am quite irregular with my prayers. But everytime I look for you, you ensure to make your presence felt.  Thank you for not giving up on me. 

You must be wondering that my thank you list is not as long, as usually my wish list is. This letter may be short but is straight from my heart. Every time I count my blessings, I find myself fortunate and lucky.  Thank you for blessing me always. My faith in you will always remain intact and unshakeable.

What is the Conclusion of a Letter to God?

How does the reader feel about the ending of the story a letter to God?

The conclusion of ‘A Letter to God’ is that God will always take care of us and we should put our trust in Him. The author emphasizes the importance of faith and strong belief.  At the end the readers feel that the need of Lencho was fulfilled. About the end of the chapter ‘A Letter to God’ we feel that God will always take care of us and we should put our trust in Him. God loves us unconditionally.

In the other words the conclusion of the chapter ‘A letter to God’ is that ultimately, true faith works in favour of us. The mindset of Lencho proves the law of attraction. Lencho desired something with a very strong belief and he got the desired results. Though partially not fulfilled still we can say that he proves the law of attraction. In the end  of the chapter we feel that God’s plans are amazing we hardly can understand them but they are in favour of us. The chapter “A Letter to God” also tells us that even if we struggle hard and face many hardships, we should always keep faith.  Faith in God and optimism are extremely necessary to carry on with life.

On Sunday, June 14, 1981, John Piper preached on 1 Corinthians 7:17–24, which begins, “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him” (1 Cor. 7:17). The point of Piper’s message , he said, could be stated as a declaration and as a prayer:

As a declaration it would be: How you fulfill the demands of your vocation is an essential part of Christian discipleship. Or to put it another way: How you do your job is a big part of your obedience to Jesus. Stated as a prayer, the main point today is: Father, grant to us all the grace to be conscious of your presence at our work and to obey your commands in all our vocational relationships.

He then explained how that declaration and prayer related to Paul’s letter to the churches in Corinth. He concluded his sermon by offering four helpful and practical implications for our work. [To read and/or listen to the sermon in its entirety, click here .]

First, God is much more concerned with the way you do the job you now have than he is with whether you get a new job. We have in this congregation nurses, teachers, carpenters, artists, secretaries, bookkeepers, lawyers, receptionists, accountants, social workers, repairmen of various sorts, engineers, office managers, waitresses, plumbers, salesmen, security guards, doctors, military personnel, counselors, bankers, police officers, decorators, musicians, architects, painters, house cleaners, school administrators, housewives, missionaries, pastors, cabinet makers, and many more. And we all need to hear that what lies most on the heart of God is not whether we move from one to the other, but whether in our present work we are enjoying God’s promised presence and obeying his commands in the way we do our work.

Second, as we have seen, the command to stay in the calling in which you were when converted is not absolute. It does not condemn all job changes. We know this not only because of the exceptions Paul allowed to his principle here in 1 Corinthians 7 (cf. verse 15), but also because Scripture depicts and approves such changes. There is provision for freeing slaves in the Old Testament, and we are familiar with a tax collector who became a preacher and fishermen who became missionaries. Besides this, we know that there are some jobs in which you could not stay and obey God’s commands: for example, prostitution, numerous forms of indecent and corrupting entertainment, and others in which you may be forced to exploit people.

Paul is not saying that professional thieves or Corinthian cult prostitutes should stay in the calling in which they were called. The question at Corinth was: When we come to Christ, what should we abandon? And Paul’s answer is: You don’t need to abandon your vocation if you can stay in it with God. His concern is not to condemn job changes, but to teach that you can have fulfillment in Christ whatever your job is. This is unfashionable teaching in contemporary Western society, because it cuts the nerve of worldly ambition. We need to think long and hard about whether what we communicate to our children about success is biblical or just American. The word of God for all us “success seekers” is this: Take all that ambition and drive that you are pouring into your upward mobility and pour it instead into a spiritual zeal to cultivate an enjoyment of God’s presence and obedience to his revealed will in Scripture.

Third, for you younger people who have not yet entered a profession, the implication of our text is this: When you ask yourself the question, What is God’s will for my life?  you should give the resounding answer: His will is that I maintain close fellowship with him and devote myself to obeying his commandments .  God’s revealed will for you (the only will you are responsible to obey) is your sanctification ( 1 Thessalonians 4:3 ), not your vocation. Devote yourself to that with all your heart, and take whatever job you want. I have no doubt that, if all our young people are bending every effort to stay close to God and to obey the commands of Scripture, God will distribute them in the world exactly where he wants their influence for him.

Fourth, and finally, this text implies that the job you now have, as long as you are there, is God’s assignment to you. Verse 17 says, “Let everyone lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him.” God is sovereign. It is no accident that you are where you are. “A man’s mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps” ( Proverbs 16:9 ). “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will be established” ( Proverbs 19:21 ). “The lot is cast in the lap, but the decision is wholly from the Lord” ( Proverbs 16:33 ).

You are where you are by divine assignment, even if you got there by fraud. Your job is your ministerial assignment, just as much as mine is. How you fulfill the demands of that job is just as essential in life as what you do here on Sunday. For many of us that may mean turning over a new leaf tomorrow morning. Let’s all pray before we set out to work: “God, go with me today and keep me conscious of your presence. Encourage my heart when I tend to despair, and humble me when I tend to boast. O God, give me the grace to obey your commandments, which I know are all summed up in this, to love my neighbor as myself. Amen.”

At this time, do you think or believe that God has given you an assignment? If so, what is it? Are you preparing for it? And in what ways? That’s what I’m going to help you focus on this week from a biblical and practical perspective. So, let’s get started.

For starters, there were many in the Bible we can quickly trace back to such as Noah who was given the assignment of building the ark. Moses who was given the huge task of leading millions of the Israelites out of Egypt to the Promised Land. Joshua who was given the torch to bring them into the Promised Land. Esther who was chosen to be a queen for such a time to save her people from annihilation. Nehemiah who was heavily passionate and burdened with the task of rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. And the disciples, as well as the Apostle Paul with carrying out the Great Commission to all the nations and spreading the gospel ( we  also have this assignment).

So, has God given you any assignments?

As I thought and prayed about this post, the Lord impressed upon my heart to write specifically about understanding the importance of assignments, who they affect, how we should prepare ourselves for them, and why we do them in the first place. Before I go deeper, just know that any assignment God gives you should be taken seriously and with a confident trust that He will show up and be there to help and lead you by His Spirit. And guess what, no matter what it looks like or how it turns out in your eyes, God’s plans never fail. Remember that.

When you look back at his track record - the ark was built. Moses  did  lead the people out of Egypt. Joshua successfully lead them into the Promised Land. Esther boldly saved her people from annihilation. Nehemiah and his team did finish rebuilding the wall. The disciples, as well as the Apostle Paul kept the faith and finished the race at all cost. Paul said in 2 Timothy 1:1-2, “I, Paul, am on special assignment for Christ, carrying out God’s plan laid out in the message of life by Jesus.” (MSG). Amen! You see, in all of these successfully completed assignments, God’s plan prevailed.

So, when God gives you an assignment, it’s very important to stay close to Him through prayer and His word for direction. He may even send Spirit-led messengers, volunteers, or instruct you to create a team to assist you. The key is following His divine provision step by step. Trust me. He knows how to get the job done, successfully .

And listen. In your lifetime sis, there will be many assignments given. If you’re a mother, you have the assignment of not only nurturing your kid or kids, but also teaching and training them godly ways and the Word. If you’re a wife, you have the assignment of being a loving, respectful and submissive wife who comes alongside her husband to help him fulfill his God-given assignment. You two are a team.

But also, if you work on the job, you’ll have many natural assignments. You’ll also have the task of being a light even on the dark or hard days. Your co-workers or fellow co-laborers will need encouragement by you and to see Jesus working through you by the way you carry yourself as a Christian. And you and I both have the assignment of helping to fulfill the Great Commission.

Assignments come in big and small packages. Our job is to unwrap them, accept them, and trust that our good Lord will help us carry them out well with the gifts He has so graciously given to us by His Spirit.

So lastly, I’ll ask one more time. Do you have a God-given assignment? Do you have something that you need to work on specifically this week? If so, prepare yourself accordingly. Break out a pen and pad, and start writing ideas down. Or open up a fresh screen on your computer and do some research about how to do what it is that you need to do. Make a list. Plan your week out early. Ultimately, you and God know what it all entails to get the job done and to get it done right and on time.

Don’t forget to pray, watch for His direction, listen for His voice and messengers, and be diligent in working towards completing your assignment. And make sure to give Him all the glory when it’s all said and done. I echo the words of the Apostle Paul from Philippians 1:6, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved. So let’s be ready from the  Inside Out !

• Your assignment will be something that no one else can accomplish. Look at your thumb. No one else on the planet had your fingerprint. You are unique and special. God has given you abilities that are not duplicated in any other person on earth. If you do not complete your assignment, it will never be done in the way that only you can do it.
• Your assignment is bigger than you can accomplish alone. You need other people. You need God to be involved in your assignment. With God’s help you can do something bigger than is possible with your own strength.
• Your assignment will take your whole life to accomplish. Your life purpose is bigger than a few months or years. It may take you a lifetime to prepare to accomplish your assignment. After you die, the fruit of your assignment will continue.
• There are a variety of ways for you to accomplish your assignment. The nature of your calling comes from God, but the way you fulfill your assignment comes from your creativity. My assignment is to be an evangelist, within this calling there are a variety of ways of accomplishing my assignment. I could be a street evangelist, a crusade evangelist, an Internet evangelist, or a television evangelist. Each of these options would be a fulfillment of God’s call on my life. My assignment comes from God, but the method I use to fulfill that assignment comes from me. The nature of my calling comes from God, the scope of my calling is revealed by my willingness to be used.
• Your assignment is attached to a particular place, people, or problem. You are not called to fix every problem in the world. You are called to fix a specific problem that no one else can fix. Stay in your assignment and don’t try to minister to everyone. Paul was not assigned to John Mark. A trash collector cannot collect trash in both Seattle and Miami, he has to choose a geographical location to fulfill his assignment.
• By embracing your assignment, you are saying no to distractions. Know who you are and what you are called to do. I am called to be an evangelist. When I embrace my assignment, it forces me to decline many invitations that are good but have nothing to do with my calling. The more clearly your assignment is defined, the easier it will be to make important decisions. On Facebook, some people make comments that I disagree with but I do not say anything. Why? Because trying to set them straight is not my assignment.
• When you are in your assignment, you will be sought out by people who need your specific skill. People will appreciate you for who you are instead of for who they wish you were. I don’t get mad at my dentist because he does not cut my hair. You will be rewarded for the problems that you solve.

Do’s and don’ts of writing letters of encouragment

Each of these CHM members have received cards from fellow members like you, who took time out of their day to spread the love of Christ and encourage them when they were feeling overwhelmed. These cards turned bad days into good ones, gave hope when they were feeling down, and became treasures long after their medical events had passed.

But how do you write letters of encouragement or cards like this? What should you include? What should you leave out? We’ve provided some ideas you can use to make sure that your letter or card is truly encouraging, along with suggestions for what  not  to include.

Do include Scripture

The psalmist wrote, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; and saves those who are crushed in spirit” [ Psalm 34:18 , NIV]. Who is better, then, to encourage fellow members struggling through a medical incident? Including Scripture—the very Word of God—brings His unwavering comfort and encouragement right into the recipient’s hands. The Bible provides a multitude of uplifting thoughts to share.

Do include prayer

One of the most encouraging declarations a believer can hear is: “I’m praying for you.” Take this encouragement one step further and write out your prayer so your recipient can see the words you prayed over them and hold onto your prayer as they go through their medical event.

Do include stories of God’s power

As Phylicia Masonheimer so aptly said, “God’s kindness and past provision are a template for His future actions.” By sharing your encouraging stories or the ways you have seen the Lord working in your own life, you are giving this same encouragement to your fellow members.

Do be Spirit-led and heartfelt

A letter of encouragement doesn’t have to be lengthy, perfectly penned, or eloquently expressed—on par with Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, or the psalmist—to be impactful. Instead, listen to the Holy Spirit as He leads you and write from your heart! What makes these letters and cards so encouraging is that you took the time to write and let the recipients know you’re thinking of them.

Don’t include advertising or promotional offers, health remedies, political materials, or information promoting various religious denominations

It’s important to remember that the purpose of writing a letter is to encourage people as they go through a difficult situation. Sending such items as these does not accomplish this goal. Even though they may be sent with good intentions, these communication pieces typically benefit the sender more than the receiver.

Before you send something, ask yourself,  Would I find this encouraging when I’m facing a stressful event?  If the answer is no, don’t send it.

Letters of encouragement and cards are a huge blessing to your fellow members. Indeed, they often are treasured for years after the event has taken place. Thank you for supporting your brothers and sisters in Christ through your comforting and uplifting words. Happy encouraging!

Paul’s Change of Plans

12  We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holiness [ c ] and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you. 13  Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us, 14  even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesus [ d ] returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.

15  Since I was so sure of your understanding and trust, I wanted to give you a double blessing by visiting you twice— 16  first on my way to Macedonia and again when I returned from Macedonia. [ e ] Then you could send me on my way to Judea.

17  You may be asking why I changed my plan. Do you think I make my plans carelessly? A Prayer of Commitment to God

I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. John 17:4

If the desire of your heart is to please God and fulfill His will for your life, here is a prayer for you:

Heavenly Father, I thank You that even though You know everything about me, You still love me. You know my thoughts, my mistakes, my sins, and yet You still call me your child. Your grace towards me is beyond comprehension. More than anything else, I want to know You intimately and sense Your presence in my life each day. If there is any part of me that I have kept from You, show me so that I can invite You to rule and reign there.

Come into me, Holy Spirit, and revive my soul with rivers of living water. Then flow out through me into a dry and thirsty world (see John 7:38-39 ). Help me to keep my eyes fixed on You instead of others (see Hebrews 12:1-2 ). Lord, be my richest treasure always. Help me never to make an idol out of anyone or anything or allow possessions or the distractions of this world to get in front of You in any way.

You are my healer, my hope, and my strength. When I need freedom, You are my deliverer. You are my shield from the Enemy, my counselor when I need guidance, and my stronghold in the day of trouble (see Psalm 32:7 ). Truly, You are the God of miracles. Work Your miracles of grace in my life and keep changing me from day to day into Your likeness (see 2 Corinthians 3:18 ). In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Thousands recently made history by joining the Baptize California movement at beaches and church sites where 12,000 people recently took the biblical plunge in the largest baptism in U.S. history.

Another post added, "Today was powerful!!!"

More than 6,000 entered the Pacific Ocean at Huntington Beach with the additional 6,000 people immersed in churches across the Golden State.  

Pastor Mark Francey, the visionary behind the monumental event, told CBN's Faithwire that even Satanists joined in.      "It was a lot of people - so many cool stories," said Francey. "They're flooding in, from Satanists that came to the beach that got radically encountered by the love of God, end up getting baptized spontaneously, to one couple proposing. The guy gets baptized comes out of the water, has a ring in his pocket, proposes to his wife on the beach."

Francey also shared that entire families made their way to the water.     "I baptized one family that had 17 people between kids, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles – everyone getting baptized – crying, hugging. I mean it felt like a book of Acts page," he said. 

Churches from various denominational backgrounds also played a role. 

"It is not about one denomination," explained Francey. "It's an inter-denominational effort. It's really a Great Commission mandate that's allowing everybody, enough room in our doctrine to go, 'Look we might not see eye to eye on every single tenet of our faith, but we all do agree that Jesus told us to go into all the world, make disciples of all nations baptizing them.'"

The baptisms come on the heels of a move of God happening in other parts of the country. Florida beaches, the Texas Gulf, and rivers in the Midwest have become epicenters for mass baptisms. 

Now with the success of Baptize California, Francey is already raising the bar for 2025 with an event called Baptize America. 

"We'll have two expressions Sunday morning on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 that all the local churches will open up their facilities," Francey said. "Right after your last service of the morning the time that everyone baptizes in local churches - then that evening we'll do regional events all over America."

He added, "We already have some denominations, nondenominational networks with thousands of churches saying, 'We want to plug this in and encourage everyone in our movement to be part of this.'"

The Bible Code

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David , the son of Abraham:   Matthew 1:1 NASB

David – Before the world adopted Arabic numerals, many ancient languages used the written alphabet as a counting system.  The first letter of the alphabet would also be the number 1; the second 2, etc.  Of course, you needed some letters to represent digits larger than 10 so you would create combinations of letters to produce larger numbers.  This produced some interesting arrangements.  It also explains why most ancient counting systems didn’t have a number 0.  Numbers were used for counting things, and zero wasn’t anything you could count.  As a result of this ancient practice, written texts can be converted into numeric codes.  This is why Matthew alters the genealogy of Yeshua so that it fits the numeric total of the letters in the name David.  And this is also why modern people get a bit crazy when they start imagining that the Bible is “nothing but a string of numbers sent from God,” as the actor in Pi says.  An example of this is found in the book The Bible Code .  Here’s the promotional description:

More than just a simple skip code, the Bible code crisscrosses the entire known text of the Bible to find a complex network of words and phrases. For example, after it finds a keyword (“Yitzhak Rabin”), the computer then looks for related information (“assassin,” “Amir,” “Tel Aviv”). Time after time it finds connected names, dates, and places encoded together. With “Bill Clinton,” “President.” With “Hitler,” “Nazi.” With the moon landing, “spaceship” and “Apollo 11.” A code that has information about significant earthquakes that already happened warns of a major earthquake in Los Angeles early in the next century. It also warns of a nuclear war triggered by an act of nuclear terrorism against Israel. [1]

Now you might ask, “If several ancient languages used this type of arithmetic, why would anyone get so excited about the numeric arrangement in the Bible?”  Good question.  Why don’t we look for a code in ancient Greek texts, or Coptic, or Gothic, or the Byzantine texts?  The answer is obvious.  The West believes the Bible is God’s word, and therefore the code in the Bible is God’s code.  Those other cultures might have messages hidden in the text but they aren’t messages from God.  Since Hebrew is the real God-code language, that’s where we go to find out what God’s secret message is.  And above all else, the reason we look for the code is because we want to know the future .  In cultures where life today is what matters, such a code would have less value.  But for us, oh my, how we want to know!

This implies something else about the way we understand Hebrew.  During the Second Temple period, two significant methods of interpretation arose among the rabbis., typified by Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Ismael.  Heschel describes them:

“Rabbi Akiva believed that every detail and every stylistic form has a deep significance and a hidden intent.  To Rabbi Akiva, textual teachings were given in order to be expanded upon.  One who interprets via the surface meaning alone is like a poor man looking for gleanings.  To Rabbi Ismael, textual teachings were given in order to be understood and to establish traditions, not to be expanded upon.” [2]

According to Rabbi Ismael:

“ . . . the text was given for a specific purpose—to communicate instruction to human beings.  It is not beckoning to us to discover layers of existing meaning that are not already visible.  However, the text does invite us, as does any straightforward set of instructions, to deduce new directives and truths for it, by the use of logic and reason.  But that is construction , not discovery; and this summarizes the Ishmaelian view.” [3]

“ . . . because in the Ishmaelian view, the words themselves are not important but only the instructions that they convey.” [4]

Those who search for the secret Bible code adopt the view of Akiva.  The Bible becomes a multilayered code waiting for us to discover its secrets.  But this isn’t the only Hebrew view.  Ishmael saw the biblical text as instruction in righteousness, not secret messages about the future.  He focused attention on what the text means for us today.  The “code” is construction, perhaps even fabrication, that depends on some presuppositions about God and the biblical text; presuppositions that have little to do with living righteously today.

The next time someone excitedly tells you about some secret they’ve discovered in the Bible you might ask yourself why this discovery is so important, and which system of interpretation is being employed.  And if, by chance, you feel your own spiritual adrenaline rushing to the surface, you might ask those two questions again—reflexively.
