Personal Experience

During my Master's program, I was given the opportunity to participate in an industrial lab training program in Bangalore along with my classmates. Upon arrival, we encountered a communication issue as many locals in South Indian states either spoke their regional language or English, but not Hindi, which we were familiar with. This was a new experience for us as none of us had ever visited South Indian states before. Feeling nervous and puzzled about reaching our destination, we approached a few locals for directions. However, our attempts at communication were unsuccessful as they were unable to understand Hindi. We found ourselves in a bewildering situation and felt panicked.

Just then, a gentleman appeared and offered to help. He communicated with us in English and provided clear explanations of the route and destination. Thanks to his assistance, we were able to reach our destination smoothly. This experience taught us the importance of learning and improving our English-speaking skills, especially when travelling to new places where our native language may not be widely understood.

The Importance of English: The World Language of 2020 and Beyond?

Adelaide A.

There are 2 billion English speakers in the world

English is the official language of 67 countries, english words used to have gender, there are ~171,000 words in the english vocabulary, shakespeare added over 1,000 words to the english language, 1. english is the dominant language in academia, 2. english is the most common business language, 3. the most popular entertainment in the world is in english, 4. english is the most useful language for travel, 5. english is the language of the online world, 6. english is the easiest language in the world to learn, sharpen your real-world english skills with 1-on-1 tutoring.

We know that English is the most understood language today, with 2 billion speakers across the world.

English is not just the most common language: it’s also the most important one for you to learn for many reasons!

The British Council conducted interviews with six English language students to understand the ways in which their English courses were impacting their lives. They found that English was a liberating force: enabling the learners to be competitive in the job market, access college-education overseas and enhance their ability to access information and build friendships online.

This important language has changed the lives of so many people. It could just change your life too.

If you’re looking for more reasons why you should be part of the huge community of English speakers, read on!

5 Fascinating Facts about the English language

There’s always something interesting to learn about English. Below are 5 surprising facts that will help you understand more about this incredible language!

With 2 billion speakers worldwide , English is the largest language by the number of speakers. It is also the third largest language by the number of native speakers.

As the most common language, English has the power of connecting people from many different cultures, building relationships and understanding. After putting your time and effort in to learn English , you’ll be able to speak with around 20% of people in the world .

That’s right, 67 countries ! In some countries where English is not the most spoken language, it is still an official language. That means, it’s accepted by a country’s government, and often taught in schools. That’s a lot of the world covered with just one language!

Amongst these countries are the “ core Anglosphere “. These include the USA (with at least 230 million native English speakers), the UK (with 60 million speakers), Canada (at least 20 million), Australia (at least 17 million), and New Zealand (4.8 million). Due to the colonial history of the British empire, some countries also have English as an official language. These include Barbados, India, Nigeria and Cyprus.

New call-to-action

If you speak Spanish, German or French, you’ll be familiar with languages where nouns come in three varieties: masculine, feminine or neutral. These days, English nouns don’t have a gender. But once upon a time, they did.

Up until the 1200s, instead of using the articles “the” or “a”, Old English had the masculine article “se” and the feminine article “seo”. Linguists aren’t sure what happened to provoke the change. However, Professor Anne Curzan claims in her book Gender Shifts in the History of English that English lost its genders after the language was mixed with many others over hundreds of years. A lot of this language mixing took place in the North of England, where the Vikings made a huge impact after invading between the 700s and the 1000s.

Since English has such complex grammar rules , it’s fortunate that there isn’t the added complication of gendered nouns!

Before we explain just how deep the English language is, we need to mention — there is absolutely no need for English learners to be scared by the number of words there are. In fact, research shows that you will be able to understand about 65% of all writing in English with only the 300 most common words .

At the time of writing, the Oxford English Dictionary contains 171,476 words . However, it’s hard to tell if these numbers are reliable, simply because English has repurposed words from so many other languages.  It’s also surprisingly difficult for linguists to measure what “counts” as a whole word… for example, should we include plurals, diminutives and conjugations?

It’s estimated that three words are added to the dictionary every two hours , and roughly 1,000 words are added to the Oxford English Dictionary every year . In 2020 alone, “LOL”, “awesomesauce”, and “shticky” were all added to the dictionary, which shows how flexible and fun the language has become.

Changes in a language are usually down to the effort of hundreds of thousands of speakers over hundreds of years. It’s extremely unusual for one person to be responsible for a big linguistic shift, but in English, there is one exception — William Shakespeare.

The English language wouldn’t be the same without the writer of famous plays like Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet . Through him, we were introduced to words like “lonely”, “critic”, and “addiction”. If you feel like a challenge, try adding Shakespeare to your reading list alongside these 15 classic English stories.

6 reasons why English is the most valuable language you can learn in 2020 (and beyond)

Knowing English will allow you to be part of a global conversation in so many ways. Below are just five of the reasons learning English could change your life for the better.

As of 2020, 17 of the top 20 universities in the global rankings are English-speaking. This alone shows how widely-adopted English is as the language of academia.

Learning English opens the door to some of the world’s top colleges and universities, particularly in the United States and United Kingdom. Many of these institutions ask for a B2 level of English . If you’re looking to improve your English specifically to meet this criteria, you can easily find an online tutor who can assess your speaking, writing, listening and reading skills.

Achieving B2 level English might sound like a challenge, but academic institutions ask for a strong level for your own good. It’s so you can keep up with your classes and learn effectively, without stressing over your language barriers .

The best way to prove your English level is by achieving a certification from either the IELTS or TOEFL English exams . One of these two certifications is your golden ticket to opportunities, not just at university, but in your career too.

Learning English will make you more employable to not just businesses in the UK and US, but also businesses across the world. Research by Cambridge English found that English is important for over 95% of employers , even in many countries where English is not an official language.

If you don’t speak the common language in your office, you’ll miss out on bonding time with colleagues. More seriously, you may find it difficult to make yourself understood in your day-to-day role, as well as with customers and potential clients. That’s why international businesses are always on the lookout for competent English speakers.

With English, you’ll be valuable to any company. And you’ll be rewarded for your knowledge, too. One study found that being fluent in English can increase your hourly wage by 28% on average.

By learning English you can create a bright future where you can earn and work almost anywhere in the world. Just ask Marc, who was promoted and relocated to New York after improving his English . “For my new job, I needed to be able to bring more nuance to my conversations,” he said. “Now, I’m calmer when I take part in large meetings with other managers who come from the UK.”

Hollywood and Netflix have opened up our minds to brilliantly-told stories and incredible must-see TV. When you learn English, you won’t need to read pesky subtitles with weird translations any longer!

Entertainment is also one of the easiest and most fun ways to learn English! For example, you could watch movies with a notepad, pausing throughout to look up new vocabulary. Or, you could “shadow” your favorite characters, by pausing the movie when they say something interesting, and repeating it carefully. These are fun ways to learn new words, as well as practice your pronunciation .

YouTube is also a great resource to learn a language, since 66% of YouTube’s content is in English . There are also lots of vloggers and channels dedicated to online language learning, like Bob the Canadian, LinguaMarina and Mr Duncan. Check out our 10 favorite YouTube channels to learn English .

On top of that, you have online games, literature, live shows and much more… with English you’ll have access to endless entertainment.

With so many English speakers, traveling across the world becomes so much easier!

As a common second language, you can often speak with people in English to learn about your surroundings and cultures. Knowing even a little bit of English certainly helps if you’re stuck somewhere and need to find the local bus station, or if you want to negotiate bargain prices in a market. In an emergency, it could even save your or somebody else’s life.

In many popular tourist destinations, hospitality workers use English as it helps their businesses. They are able to better communicate with potential customers. It also helps customers find what they need and get their money’s worth.

If you’re able to bridge the communication gap with English, you’ll find traveling so much simpler. If you’re taking a holiday sometime soon, take a look at these must-know English travel phrases .

Over half of the most visited web pages in the world are in English, making it the dominant language online. With over 1 billion internet users typing in English , you’ll be able to access many types of resources and learning platforms to strengthen your skills.

You’ll be entertained by YouTube videos and movies. You’ll be able to read the headlines on The New York Times. You’ll be able to interact with people on language exchange apps. You might even find love with dating apps. The internet is so vast, so the possibilities are endless!

English is not just an advantage for online entertainment. Individuals can develop and advertise their skills using English on the internet, such as building their own website or taking an online course . International companies are also using online tools such as email and Linkedin to source new English-speaking employees, and Zoom to conduct online interviews.

Whether it’s to grow professionally or simply for fun, understanding English can help you open new opportunities and possibilities all through the power of the internet.

Learning English is not without its difficulties. You’ll have to battle with odd spellings and pronunciation of words like “colonel” and “choir.” However, there are many reasons why people consider English the easiest of all the languages to learn.

To start, English nouns have no genders and a (relatively!) simple grammar system . Sentence structures are fairly straightforward without a tricky morphology. Morphology is when words change depending on their function in a sentence. For example, in English you won’t change the ending of an adjective depending on the gender of the noun in a sentence, like you would in languages like Spanish. This makes learning nouns and adjectives a breeze.

Best of all, there are endless ways to expose yourself to English — more than any other language. Whether it’s through TV, books, the internet, or 1-on-1 conversation . Absorbing English through articles, books and watching TV shows like these can be very helpful.

Learning English becomes so much easier when you take advantage of the wealth of English entertainment available, as well as the vast amount of online learning resources . However, to get fluent fast, you need to get real speaking practice and contact with the language that mimics real-life use.

That’s why we recommend learning with regular lessons with a native English tutor . With a 1-on-1 English tutor, you’ll be able to start speaking English from your first lesson. You’ll also have someone who can offer you resources and tips to improve every day. With someone to guide you and expose you to the language, you’ll see progress in no time.

Interested in corporate language training with your team? Check out Preply Enterprise!

There’s no doubt the English language is important in many different ways. However, everyone has their own reasons to learn English — such as a career goal or the ability to speak with a loved one in their language .

Whatever your reason is for learning this international language, the most important thing is to keep your goal in mind and practice regularly. Only then will you start to see the incredible advantages that the English language has to offer.

In the last few decades, English has become the global standard language for official as well as unofficial communication and the number of users is ever-increasing. As a result, it has become  obligatory  to master this language if one wishes to move to an English-speaking country, like Australia, Britain or America, in search of educational and professional opportunities. The upcoming paragraphs of this essay will  throw light on  the reasons for the popularity of English and its importance as an international language.

Learning English has  multifarious  advantages as compared to other languages. Firstly, when a person moves to a country where English is the dominant language, it is of utmost importance to learn the language in order to interact effortlessly with the natives. Secondly, nowadays, the most common medium of education and  white-collar  jobs is English as it is  comprehensible  to most people around the world. For example, when a person becomes proficient in English while in school or college, he/she has access to various life-changing possibilities. Last but not least, being fluent in English opens up a world of prospects where one can delve into various technological, scientific and magnificent other  breakthroughs  going on in this world. It not only increases the knowledge of the person but also increases their  tenacity  to  make their own mark  in the world.

Colonization is one of the most important reasons why English has become a universal language. When the British ruled over large countries like India, Africa, Canada, Australia, etc., they  advocated  the spread of the English language. Consequently, it became the language of the educated and, at present,  monopolizes  the current global scenario. Moreover, there are various nations of the world, like India and Russia, that have their own language/s in which the nationals connect with each other. This creates a communication gap when foreigners visit these countries. In such situations, English comes to the rescue as it is the most spoken language in the world, with over 1,130 million speakers in the world.

In conclusion, as English has become the most preferred language for worldwide communication, it has become a powerful tool to acquire an effective position in the world, whether in the educational sphere or in terms of career growth.

All of us need a medium to talk and that is our language. Those who cannot listen have a sign language. Apart from all these languages, we are talking about English.

Importance of English Language

English is one of the most spoken languages around the world. India is known for Hindi; still, there are places where people won’t speak Hindi. I have mentioned some of the importance of learning English.

  • Nowadays it is very necessary to learn English because the stuff on the internet is available in English.

  • English makes us look sophisticated.

It is a fact that one should never forget his mother tongue; still one should learn English because it helps us everywhere. Apart from the above-mentioned importance, there are many more. English got popular because people across the world know this language more as a comparison to some other language.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – English Language and its Importance in India

As we know all of us to need a medium to express our feelings and whatever we think or want to say. Most of us talk in our mother tongue at home but at the same time, we also speak some other language at our workplace. And the most spoken language apart from our mother tongue is English. Do you know why this language got so famous and what historical importance it carries? Let’s have some details.

History of English in India

As we know India follows British English, and it started just when the Britishers came to India. It was 1830 when East India Company ruled India and as a result, they also forced us to learn their language.

It was 1835 when an Act was passed by Thomas Babington Macaulay, in which English education got compulsory for Indians. In this way, English got compulsory for us and it continued. Those who use to learn English were called mannered and sophisticated so, people started learning it.

Effect of English Language on Our Society

Although Britishers left us, we got habitual of their language; after all, they ruled us near about 200 years. After some time, English became the only language that people understood all over the country because most of the south Indian states disagreed to accept Hindi as their official language. As Britishers had all their Acts and rules in English, so we decided to translate it in our local language. But English was everywhere like our Education, Politics, etc.

Although we are free today, we are not free in terms of language. Apart from the language itself, we have also adopted English culture. Change is good when it is beneficial for us. It is good in terms of the abolition of some hypocritic thoughts and culture. English made things easy and it is the beauty of a language that we can talk to anyone and visit anywhere in the world without any difficulty.

English was a result of Britishers but when they left us it was totally our choice. Today the scenario is English is everywhere, either it is a signboard or a name of a station, it is always bilingual. Not only Indians but also tourists from other countries feel convenient when they get information in English also. There are multiple benefits to this language, so keep learning and keep growing.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – How Important is English Language in India

India is a country where all Indians are equal and they are never discriminated in terms of their religion, language, or culture. So, while talking about their language it is quite difficult to select one language as our national language. As we know there are more than 100 languages spoken in India. And if we will elect one as a national language, people of other states will definitely oppose it. Then what about English?

English and its Origin in India

India was a country where people use to speak different languages at different places like Hindi is spoken in the north whereas Tamil, Telugu, Malayan, etc. in the south. Unity in diversity is the beauty of our country, and apart from these many languages, we choose 22 languages as our official languages. But Hindi and English are adopted widely across the nation.

Now talking about the origin of English in India was the Britishers. As we know English is of two types one is American English and the other is British English. We follow British English just because the Britishers ruled us and gave us this language.

It was Lord Macaulay, who wanted to make a well-mannered society in India. So, in the year 1835, he passed an Act introducing the English language in our education system. English was also made as the official language of India. All the official work under crown and court were performed in English. This was the origin of English in India and although Britishers left us, they are still with us in terms of language.

Importance of English in India

As discussed, there are more than 100 languages spoken in India and it was very difficult to select one official language after independence. Although Hindi is spoken across the country, people from the southern part of the nation strongly opposed Hindi as a national language. As a result, English was left as it is and the other 22 languages were elected. Today there is no official language of India but English has some significance.

  • English is a language which people easily understand all over the country, so we can say that this language unites us.

The Importance of Grammar in English

English grammar is one of the most important elements of your language study. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most complex and difficult.

In this article, I’ll show you why English grammar matters in different situations , from informal conversations to professional communication.

I’ll also help you study grammar more efficiently  by focusing on the concepts that are most important to you—plus three key English grammar rules you can’t ever ignore.

How Important Is English Grammar in Daily Life?

3 english grammar rules that are important in any setting, irregular plurals, articles and gender, speaking formally, how to practice the english grammar that’s most important to you, and one more thing....

Download: This blog post is available as a convenient and portable PDF that you can take anywhere. Click here to get a copy. (Download)

Correct grammar is your key to speaking English fluently and confidently. Knowing your grammar will help you avoid errors that make your English sound strange to native speakers.

But there are certain situations in which English grammar is especially important . For example, if you’re going for a job interview in an English-speaking country , the employer will be interested in the quality of your spoken and written English. In fact, in a recent survey of UK job recruiters , 50% said that bad spelling and grammar was the biggest reason they would dislike an application.

Correct grammar won’t just demonstrate your English skills—it’ll also show that you’re diligent and have an eye for detail.

This is equally important if you’re aiming to study abroad. Colleges and universities are likely to assess your academic English  based largely on your knowledge of English grammar.

Grammar is even important for your social life . Did you know that people on online dating apps are 14% less likely to chat with someone who uses poor grammar ? Plus, when you’re meeting new people or visiting new places, the last thing you want is to be misunderstood! To avoid confusing your friends, or even ordering more drinks than you intended, you need to have a firm idea of how to structure your words.

  • Thousands of learner friendly videos (especially beginners)
  • Handpicked, organized, and annotated by FluentU's experts
  • Integrated into courses for beginners

With all that said, remember that in some situations it’s okay to relax your grammar . When you’re texting a close friend, for example, it’s fine to use casual or more simplified language. Talking online is a fantastic way to connect with native speakers and other English learners in a friendly and pressure-free environment.

Here are a few English grammar rules that everybody needs to know.

If you ask your friend to look after your dog , but you actually have seven dogs,  your friend is in for a massive canine surprise.

Making a mistake with plurals is sure to cause confusion anywhere , from social situations to research labs. That’s why it’s so important to learn the rules—especially for irregular English plurals, which are tricky for non-native speakers.

In English, the standard way to form the plural is by adding the letter “ s ” to the end of a singular noun.

One cat → Two cat s

  • Interactive subtitles: click any word to see detailed examples and explanations
  • Slow down or loop the tricky parts
  • Show or hide subtitles
  • Review words with our powerful learning engine

an essay about importance of learning english

One shoe → Two shoe s

One bath → Two bath s

This rule works most of the time, but unfortunately there are some exceptions.

Words that end in “ ss ” typically form the plural by adding “ es ” to the end. This is to avoid having a triple “ s ” at the end of a word, which would look and sound strange.

One goddess → Two goddess es

One business → Two business es

Some words may stay the same in the plural as in the singular . For example, if you have one pet  fish and you buy another, you now have two  fish . If you fly in an aircraft , and then fly in another, you’ve now flown in two aircraft . There’s no rule to tell us which words will behave like this, but luckily the list isn’t too daunting. The proofreading website Vappingo has come up with 101 examples of these words .

  • Learn words in the context of sentences
  • Swipe left or right to see more examples from other videos
  • Go beyond just a superficial understanding

an essay about importance of learning english

Some of them may be a little obscure, but you’ll see there are certainly some that you’ll use all the time. When you come across a word like this, make a note of it to help you remember that it’s different.

You may also start to see patterns among irregular plurals, but don’t rely on them without checking. For example, one goose becomes two geese , but one moose becomes two moose  (not “meese”).

These sorts of words are the most misleading and probably the hardest to get the hang of. One way of learning these irregular plurals is to create a table with two columns during your regular vocabulary study. When you learn an important piece of vocabulary, write the singular form in one column and the plural in the opposite column. Hang the table somewhere you’ll see it regularly, like on the back of your bedroom door or on your fridge.

Once you get used to seeing them, they’ll begin to look less odd!

Understanding articles and gender in English is crucial for being able to refer to a person or thing correctly . Unfortunately, this highly important English grammar rule is also one of the strangest for many non-native speakers.

That’s because in many languages, the way that you describe a noun is dependent on its gender. In French, for instance, there are different articles for feminine and masculine nouns.

In English, nouns don’t have a grammatical gender. It’s common for new English speakers to refer to objects as “he” or “she” because they’re used to them having a gender in their native language.

  • FluentU builds you up, so you can build sentences on your own
  • Start with multiple-choice questions and advance through sentence building to producing your own output
  • Go from understanding to speaking in a natural progression.

an essay about importance of learning english

The good news is that once you break this habit,  English grammar is actually very simple . The two articles you need are “the” and “a.” We use “the” to refer to specific objects directly , while we use “a” to refer to objects more generally.

I would like to eat the banana you bought at the store today.

I would like to eat a banana , but there aren’t any in the house.

If a noun begins with a vowel, the indefinite article becomes “an”  rather than “a.”

  • Images, examples, video examples, and tips
  • Covering all the tricky edge cases, eg.: phrases, idioms, collocations, and separable verbs
  • No reliance on volunteers or open source dictionaries
  • 100,000+ hours spent by FluentU's team to create and maintain

an essay about importance of learning english

Confusingly, English speakers love to humanize objects, even though we don’t use genders. Vehicles are often treated as feminine. You may hear someone say, “Look at her engine, she’s a real beauty!” when talking about a car. This doesn’t mean that a car should actually be referred to as “she,” it’s just a way of expressing pride or fondness for a machine by making it sound more like a person.

Formality is important for lots of occasions. For interviews, work dinners and dates, you need to be able to adapt your English to suit the tone of the event .

One subtle grammar change that’s worth noting is the use of the words “can” and “may” when making requests or asking questions. “May” is considered more formal and polite than “can.”

With a friend, you might ask, “ Can I have the wine?” With a colleague or someone you just met, you might ask, “ May I have the wine?”  instead.

Similarly, “would like” is a more formal version of “want.”

I want to try on this dress. → I would like to try on this dress.

an essay about importance of learning english

There’s one thing that makes formality in English easier than other languages. In lots of languages, there’s a formal and an informal way of addressing somebody (saying “you”). In French, for example, you can use tu for a friend and vous  for somebody you don’t know so well. But in English we only have one word: “you.”   You can call your best friend, your mom and your boss “you” without worrying about formality.

Now that we’ve covered three important grammar rules in English, it’s time to look at how you can practice grammar that’s relevant to your needs. For instance, if you’re learning basic grammar for a trip to the U.S., you have different needs than someone who’s applying to an undergraduate program at an English-speaking university.

So, how do you focus your grammar study on the most important concepts for you ?

Start by gathering some quality, comprehensive grammar resources to narrow down your learning. For example:

Collins Easy Learning English - Easy Learning Grammar And Punctuation

As you study with this and other resources, keep a notebook of key grammatical ideas so you can look back on what you’ve covered. At the beginning of each week, choose a new area to focus on and challenge yourself to find a real life example each day. This will help you track your progress on the grammar concepts that are most important to you.

You can also make a note of confusing grammar that you hear or read in English . Once you begin to immerse yourself in English media, you’ll start to realize that you’re hearing certain phrases and structures again and again. Those are the important everyday grammar concepts you should focus on if you don’t already recognize them.

If you have English-speaking friends, don’t be afraid to ask them to help you out . People are unlikely to correct your spoken grammar because they may worry about offending you. Tell your friends that you don’t mind them politely pointing out your errors, and they can help you find the right way of rephrasing your words.

A good friend will be patient and encouraging, because even native English speakers know that grammar can be complicated.

While English grammar can seem daunting in places, learning to understand and use it correctly is incredibly rewarding. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes as you practice English. Sometimes this is the best way to learn! If you’re committed and enthusiastic about tackling grammar, it can be an absorbing and even exciting aspect of learning a new language.

Essay on Reading Day in 500 words

Reading Day is marked annually on June 19th, a day dedicated to the importance of reading. Reading Day serves as a reminder of the power that books and literature have in people’s lives. This day not only honours the act of reading but also promotes literacy and education worldwide. By recognising a day to read, we highlight the importance of literature for our personal growth and societal development.

This day is celebrated in honour of P.N. Panicker, a Keralite teacher renowned as the ‘father of the Library Movement’. Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, also known as P.N. Panicker, worked towards the betterment of society through his literacy movements in India. Even Though the day was first observed in the 1990s,  Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially declared June 19 as National Reading Day. Since then, the day has been honoured on June 19 every year.

Importance of Reading

Reading is a fundamental skill that is necessary for education and personal growth. Reading helps us gain information, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills. Reading is vital for typing children to learn the language, improve comprehension, and enhance vocabulary. Books provide a glimpse into many worlds and broaden one’s understanding of various perspectives and ideas.

For adults, reading is a tool that allows them to learn and improve themselves continuously. Fictional books inspire our imagination and creativity, whereas non-fictional books teach us about the realities of life. In a constantly changing world, understanding complicated information and being able to read are critical skills. It enables people to stay informed, make sound decisions, and fully engage in society.

Promoting Literacy and Education

One of the main objectives of Reading Day is to encourage literacy and address challenges associated with it worldwide. Despite significant educational advancements, the world continues to face challenges with literacy. According to UNESCO, around 773 million individuals globally lack basic literacy abilities, while millions of youngsters do not receive an education. Reading Day emphasises the need for successful literacy programmes and equal access to reading resources for all. Community initiatives, such as book distribution or library expansions, can have a huge impact. Working together, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to study and benefit from the knowledge that books offer.

Celebrating Reading Day

Reading Day can be celebrated in a variety of ways. Schools frequently play an important part in the celebration of reading. By organising book fairs, creative writing workshops, and storytelling sessions, we can instill a love of reading in the next generation. Libraries are also an important element of this event. Public libraries can reach out to the community by organising mobile libraries and establishing reading areas in public places. Parents can also help their children develop the habit of reading.

The Power of Reading

The impact of reading extends far beyond the individual. It can transform societies. Reading promotes empathy and cultural awareness. Through literature, an individual can learn about diverse ideas and cultures, allowing them to be a more active participant in the democratic process. Furthermore, reading can inspire and stimulate creativity. Many stories inspire us to pursue our dreams and fight social norms.

Reading Day celebrates written words and their importance in our lives. This occasion is an opportunity to promote literacy, instil a love of books, and acknowledge the significant impact reading has on individuals and societies. Let us celebrate this day as a chance to instill a lifelong appreciation of reading in individuals and work towards an educated and progressive society.

Build a Corporate Culture That Works

an essay about importance of learning english

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

All too often a culture is described as a set of anodyne norms, principles, or values, which do not offer decision-makers guidance on how to make difficult choices when faced with conflicting but equally defensible courses of action.

The trick to making a desired culture come alive is to debate and articulate it using dilemmas. If you identify the tough dilemmas your employees routinely face and clearly state how they should be resolved—“In this company, when we come across this dilemma, we turn left”—then your desired culture will take root and influence the behavior of the team.

To develop a culture that works, follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value statement.

Start by thinking about the dilemmas your people will face.

Idea in Brief

The problem.

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their corporate culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

What Usually Happens

How to fix it.

Follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value.

At the beginning of my career, I worked for the health-care-software specialist HBOC. One day, a woman from human resources came into the cafeteria with a roll of tape and began sticking posters on the walls. They proclaimed in royal blue the company’s values: “Transparency, Respect, Integrity, Honesty.” The next day we received wallet-sized plastic cards with the same words and were asked to memorize them so that we could incorporate them into our actions. The following year, when management was indicted on 17 counts of conspiracy and fraud, we learned what the company’s values really were.

The pros and cons of online learning

What to look for in an online course.

By: MIT xPRO

If you’re at a point in your life where you’re considering continuing your education, you may wonder if online learning is the right path for you.

Taking an online course requires a notable investment of time, effort, and money, so it’s important to feel confident about your decision before moving forward. While online learning works incredibly well for some people, it’s not for everyone.

We recently sat down with MIT xPRO Senior Instructional Designer and Program Manager Luke Hobson to explore the pros and cons of online learning and what to look for in an online course. If you’re waiting for a sign about whether or not to enroll in that course you’ve been eying, you just might find it here.

Pros of Online Learning

First, let’s take a look at the true value of online learning by examining some of the benefits:

1. Flexibility

Online learning’s most significant advantage is its flexibility. It’s the reason millions of adults have chosen to continue their education and pursue certificates and degrees.

Asynchronous courses allow learners to complete work at their own pace, empowering them to find the optimal time to consume the content and submit assignments.

Some people are more attentive, focused, and creative in the mornings compared to the evenings and vice versa. Whatever works best for the learners should be the priority of the learning experience.

2. Community

When Luke asks people about their main reason for enrolling in a course, a common answer is networking and community.

Learners crave finding like-minded individuals who are going through the same experiences and have the same questions. They want to find a place where they belong. Being in the company of others who understand what they’re going through can help online learners who are looking for support and motivation during challenging times and times that are worth celebrating.

Some learners have created study groups and book clubs that have carried on far beyond the end of the course-it’s amazing what can grow from a single post on a discussion board!

3. Latest information

“Speed is a massive benefit of online learning,” and according to Luke, it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

“When we say speed, we don’t mean being quick with learning. We mean actual speed to market. There are so many new ideas evolving within technical spaces that it’s impossible to keep courses the way they were originally designed for a long period of time.”

Luke notes that a program on Additive Manufacturing , Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality , or Nanotechnology must be checked and updated frequently. More formal learning modalities have difficulty changing content at this rapid pace. But within the online space, it’s expected that the course content will change as quickly as the world itself does.

Cons of Online Learning

Now that we’ve looked at some of the biggest pros of online learning, let’s examine a few of the drawbacks:

1. Learning environment

While many learners thrive in an asynchronous learning environment, others struggle. Some learners prefer live lessons and an instructor they can connect with multiple times a week. They need these interactions to feel supported and to persist.

Most learners within the online space identify themselves as self-directed learners, meaning they can learn on their own with the right environment, guidance, materials, and assignments. Learners should know themselves first and understand their preferences when it comes to what kind of environment will help them thrive.

2. Repetition

One drawback of online courses is that the structure can be repetitive: do a reading, respond to two discussion posts, submit an essay, repeat. After a while, some learners may feel disengaged from the learning experience.

There are online courses that break the mold and offer multiple kinds of learning activities, assessments, and content to make the learning experience come alive, but it may take some research to find them-more on what to look for in an online course later in this article! Luke and his colleagues at MIT xPRO are mindful of designing courses that genuinely engage learners from beginning to end.

3. Underestimation

Luke has noticed that some learners underestimate how much work is required in an online course. They may mistakenly believe that online learning is somehow “easier” compared to in-person learning.

For those learners who miscalculate how long they will need to spend online or how challenging the assignments can be, changing that mindset is a difficult process. It’s essential to set aside the right amount of time per week to contribute to the content, activities, and assignments. Creating personal deadlines and building a study routine are two best practices that successful online learners follow to hold themselves accountable.

Experience the Value of Online Learning: What to Look For in an Online Course

You’ve probably gathered by now that not all online courses are created equal. On one end of the spectrum, there are methods of online learning that leave learners stunned by what a great experience they had. On the other end of the spectrum, some online learning courses are so disappointing that learners regret their decision to enroll.

If you want to experience the value of online learning, it’s essential to pick the right course. Here’s a quick list of what to look for:

  • Feedback and connection to peers within the course platform. Interacting regularly with other learners makes a big difference. Luke and the MIT xPRO team use peer-reviewed feedback to give learners the opportunity to engage with each other’s work.
  • Proof of hard work. In the online learning space, proof of hard work often comes in the form of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or specific certifications. MIT xPRO course participants who successfully complete one or more courses are eligible to receive CEUs , which many employers, licensing agencies, and professional associations accept as evidence of a participant’s serious commitment to their professional development.

Online learning isn’t for everyone, but with the right approach, it can be a valuable experience for many people. Now that you know what to look for in an online course, see what Luke and the MIT xPRO instructional design team have to offer by checking out the latest MIT xPRO courses and programs .
