Master of Science in Civil Engineering
The UP Institute of Civil Engineering MS Civil Engineering (MSCE) Program is a two-year program for graduate students. The master’s program is designed to broaden further one’s knowledge of scientific principles in engineering, and the analysis and solution of engineering problems.
It has four fields of study:
- Structural Engineering
- Geotechnical Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Water Resources Engineering
Program Educational Objectives
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are expectations a few years after the student finishes the MS in Civil Engineering program. Consistent with the UP System’s tagline of “ Shaping minds that shape the nation” as well as the UPD College of Engineering’s mission of “Knowledge, Progress, and Service”, and UP ICE’s Mission-Vision statements, the developed MS CE PEOs are the following:
Objective 1 . Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering disciplines underlying civil engineering specialization to solve / design / investigate / conduct very complex civil engineering problems / products, processes and systems / issues / activities Objective 2 . Analyze very complex engineering issues (products, processes, systems, situations) / engineering problems in civil engineering subject area by applying advanced methods of analysis/solution. Objective 3 . Design very complex civil engineering products (devices, artefacts, etc.), processes and systems by applying appropriate and relevant design methods. Objective 4 . Apply relevant codes of practice and safety regulations to technical investigations in civil engineering within multidisciplinary contexts given predefined specifications. Objective 5 . Conduct complex engineering activities in civil engineering within multidisciplinary contexts applying practical Objective 6 . Manage work contexts in civil engineering within multidisciplinary contexts that may involve evolving issues, require novel strategies, and involve engineering judgement. Objective 7 . Function effectively in national and international contexts as member/leader of multidisciplinary teams to meet specific goals and objectives. Objective 8 . Communicate effectively, clearly and unambiguously information to specialist and no- specialist audiences in national and international contexts and society at large using appropriate communication strategies, methods and tools. Objective 9 . Engage in independent lifelong learning in the field of civil engineering within multidisciplinary contexts.

- Conceptualise : You should be able to identify a problem or requirement and work towards a solution.
- Planning and time management : You should be able to prioritise what needs to be done, create a plan and ensure that it is carried out on time.
- Research: You should be able to search for high quality information from respected sources. Review the information and report upon what it tells you about a problem or solution.
- Technical content : You should demonstrate the ability to work at a high technical level. Show that you have a deep understanding of your project and include substantial analysis.
- Communication : You should be able to communicate complex technical ideas through written and oral channels. Show that you have developed a strong technical vocabulary and that you can maintain attention to detail when writing a long document.

Civil Engineering Thesis Report Title Page
The title page can either be custom or follow the template supplied by your university. However, a standard title page should have the approved university logo, the title of the project, the full names of all contributors (i.e., authors), the project supervisor and the date when the report is submitted .
Acknowledgements
If it is appropriate, the student (individual projects) or group (design projects) may wish to thank people or organisations for help or support which has been provided. This should be supplied on its own page and does not have a section number.
Abstract For a Civil Engineering Thesis Report
The abstract is a concise summary of the material which is contained within the report. It provides the potential reader with essential information regarding the primary aim of the project and possibly a problem statement. It will outline the methods or procedures which have been used and if applicable will mention the basic experimental procedures followed. The abstract will also provide a summary of the main results and the most important conclusions which can be drawn from the work. The abstract will be a single paragraph and is usually about 200 words.
Table of Contents
Every report should include a table of contents, after the abstract but before the main body of text. All numbered sections in the report must be included in addition to the un-numbered sections such as acknowledgements, abstract and references. Introduction
It is common for the first section of the main body of text to be an introduction which provides the reader with background on the civil engineering final year project and the motivation for carrying it out. The introduction should clearly state the project aims and objectives.
The introduction is often followed by a research section; relating to important aspects of the civil engineering thesis being undertaken. This section will give the reader a clear and concise outline of the research which has been carried out and an analysis of what the findings from the research mean in relation to the rest of the civil engineering final year project.
Following the research, a section which describes and justifies approach which was taken to completing the aims of the civil engineering thesis project should be outlined. In an experimental or simulation-based civil engineering project, this section will describe what apparatus (or software) was used and the way in which the experiment (or model) was set up. The method will describe how the testing was carried out and will justify the ways in which results were collected and recorded and what measures were taken in order to recognise and reduce sources of error. In a design report, the Method section will describe the design process which was followed and will justify the way in which that method was applied. If a criteria-based approach (for example) has been taken, then the criteria must be justified objectively and quantified where possible.
Following the method, a section containing the results of the process (experiment, simulation, design etc.) will be presented. This section will clearly collate results in an appropriate form (graphs, tables, drawings) depending upon the type of civil engineering project. It is crucial that results are provided in a critical and objective manner. The language which is used should provide the reader with a clear and unbiased review of the outcome of the method. If there are limitations to the accuracy or validity of results then this should be made clear.
The discussion is probably the single most important section of the report. It is in this section where the author has an opportunity to analyse and evaluate the results and to present the findings to the reader in the clearest way possible. The discussion should never simply summarize what has been done.
Conclusions
The conclusions section will provide a clear and concise summary of the main findings of the civil engineering project and will give the author an opportunity to offer recommendations. By definition, there should be no findings given in the conclusions which have not previously been covered in the discussion.
Appendices are self-contained supplements to your civil engineering dissertation report. Information which is not directly required to explain your conclusions but which helps to support your findings can be included after the main body of text but before the references.
The final component of your civil engineering thesis report will be a complete list of references for sources which you have cited in your report. It is essential that all reports are properly referenced using a recognised referencing style. Proper referencing requires that citations are placed into the text of the report itself in order to inform the reader whenever a third-party source of information has been referred to or quoted. It is also necessary to provide a citation in the caption of any figure which has been scanned or reproduced (redrawn) from another source. A proper referencing system provides not only a list of sources used but also a positive link (citation) back to that source which is placed in the body of the text.

Our students at the University of the Philippines Diliman are currently making their final presentations for the research topic proposals to be implemented in the next second semester (January to May 2016). The first semester (August to December 2015) focused on research topic formulation including problem identification and formulation, review of related literature, and development of methodologies for data collection and analysis. Here are the topics of our students in transportation engineering and planning (not in any order):

These are part of the studies the Institute of Civil Engineering and the National Center for Transportation Studies are conducting to address transportation issues in the campus, which is an open campus with public roads.

Phi Beta Kappa chapter honors Eileen Reeves and Beth Lew-Williams with teaching awards

The Princeton University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will present its annual awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching to Eileen Reeves, professor of comparative literature , emerita, and Beth Lew-Williams, professor of history.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Monday, May 27.
The students outline the criteria for excellence in teaching as skill in instruction, commitment to working with and building relationships with undergraduates, and the ability to spark students’ intellectual interests. Each winner is presented with a plaque.
Eileen Reeves
“Tell me more” is Reeves’ catchphrase. She is known for her masterful ability to encourage students to grow as writers and thinkers while offering meticulous feedback. “She pushed me hard, abhorring ‘vile verbiage’ and loose arguments,” recalls senior Brian Sheng-Kai Li . “Yet in helping her students grow as writers and scholars, she also shows tremendous grace, patience and kindness.”
One of the world’s most recognized experts on the career of Galileo Galilei, Reeves focuses on European Renaissance humanistic studies, art history, and the history of science. She “is a powerful missionary for the joys of the early modern period, and her enthusiasm for the history of science and her ‘main man’ Galileo is electric,” Li said.
Students appreciate Reeves’ wicked sense of humor and her ability “to make the material as far away from ‘academically stuffy’ as possible. ... When work feels like recreation, you know you’re in a happy place,” said another student.
Anna Windemuth, Class of 2017, who wrote a novel for her thesis, noted that while “Professor Reeves usually dedicated her keen analysis to far greater texts, she extended the same intellectual rigor to my work” and “made East Pyne feel like home.”
Reeves earned her bachelor’s degree from Whitman College and her Ph.D. from Stanford University. She taught at Princeton from 1993 to 2023.
Beth Lew-Williams
An expert on Asian American history and a historian of race and migration, Lew-Williams is cherished by students for her “commitment to rigorous inquiry, intellectual humility and compassion,” said senior Christine Hu.
Subjects that arise in her courses require special sensitivity, as many of them are personal for students. “I think I speak for many when I say that the opportunity to learn about this history has been a healing, empowering and intellectually engaging experience,” Hu said.
When taking on topics that deal with violence and trauma, she always takes a deep interest in students’ opinions. “It is healing to understand the historical roots of the perpetual feelings of ‘otherness’ I experienced growing up,” Hu said. “I also feel empowered to advocate for change after learning about a history of Asian American activism previously unknown to me.”
A signature of many of Lew-Williams' courses is the oral history component. Each year, several dozen students conduct interviews to compile these original histories. “She pushes her students as scholars, and encourages them to listen closely and compassionately to others,” Hu said. “It is amazing that every time this course is taught, nearly 100 new oral histories are generated.”
Lew-Williams joined the Princeton faculty in 2014. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Brown University and her Ph.D. from Stanford.
