Part 3 – Follow Up Questions

1. Do children like to party?

Yes, they do. Party means fun and enjoyment to them. It means new clothes, lots to eat and a chance to dance and make merry.

2. Do adults like to party?

Yes, adults like to party. To adults, it means a time to get together with friends and family. It means having a break from the monotonous routine life. It is a time to recharge one’s batteries.

3. Do you like loud music in party?

No, personally I don’t. It gives me a headache. But most of my friends do. They think that any party is incomplete without loud music.

You should say:

  • When it took place
  • Where it was
  • Whose party it was
  • What you did there
  •  How you felt about the party

It’s my pleasure to share with you about my attendance at a recent party. It was a birthday party of my friend – Hung, who turned 22 that day. This was also his  farewell party  just before his departure to Canada to  further his study .

The party just happened last month at his own house in the hometown. Hung invited almost all of his  buddies  and we attended the birthday celebration together. Apart from us, there were more than 30 other guests on this occasion. They seemed to be unfamiliar with me but my guess was that they would be mostly Hung’s relatives, neighbors and his father’s colleagues.

We congregated and bought a present for him. It was such astonishment of us when we saw his huge birthday cake. 22 candles of different colors were lit around the cake and the whole house was  redecorated   for the occasion. We sang the birthday song when Hung cut the cake. We congratulated him and wished him an excellent academic term ahead and a  prosperous   life afterwards. Then we tasted the cake and had a good  feast , the foods were quite tasty.

To me, this birthday party brought its own meaning. It was a valuable chance for us to gather together, talk to each other our daily life and share about our childhood memories. This party   left a lasting impression on me  and honestly, it   is still fresh in my mind  until now.

1.    What types of party do people have?

There are many different kinds of party that people can take part in such as birthday party, celebration  party  or  farewell  party.  Each  party  brings  its  own  meaning  but  most  of participants always   feel on the cloud nine .

2.    Why are parties important?

People have parties to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, weddings, or the beginning of a new year. I think it’s important to celebrate these things because they are  milestones  in our lives. Parties are a good way to bring people together, and they’re an opportunity to  let off some steam.

3.    Do you think parties will become more popular in the future?

No, I don’t think anything will change. People have always had parties, and I’m sure they always will in the future. Humans need to  socialise  and enjoy themselves, and parties are one of the best ways to do that.

4.    Do people spend a lot of money on these parties in your country?

I would say my answer is yes. People think they can  splash out  in some special cases such as

  • What was it about?
  • Where was it held?
  • What did people do at the party?
  • Explain what you enjoyed at this party?

Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.

I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favorite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening. I then proceeded to order snacks and appetizers along with the beverages for the evening. The celebrations finally commenced and all the guests had arrived before she came. We welcomed her with the birthday song and hugs from everyone.

We all had an amazing time at the party. Everybody socialized, we played party games, danced and had a lot of fun throughout the evening. The best part was the fact that everyone was happy with the celebration and there were smiles all around me. My sister got gifts from everyone and was all smiles when I gifted her a necklace. She was spellbound and thanked me profusely for organizing such an amazing party.

Birthdays are among the most significant days in a person's life because they not only state their age but its also about celebrating an individual's life experiences. Birthday celebrations are essential for all of us, but they are particularly significant for children. Here are a few sample essays on ‘Birthday Party’ that students can refer to for their classwork and projects.

Birthday Party Essay

For my birthday party this year, my family and I decided to celebrate it at the new bowling alley that opened in our town. I was amazed with the cool and comfortable ambience. There were 9 majestic rows for bowling. We booked one for ourselves and wore the bowling shoes they gave us. I did not play that well since it was my first time. My parents, however, were frequent bowlers and played very well. They taught me how to hold the ball properly and how to correctly aim for the pins. I was not able to get a strike but did hit many spares. We cut my birthday cake there and my parents sang the birthday song for me. I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday with my parents.

A birthday should be a joyful occasion. However, it looked like no one had thought of my birthday this year. Nobody showed up to wish me a happy birthday when I got up in the morning. I had no messages or calls from my friends wishing me a happy birthday. My parents didn't seem to understand how miserable it made me to be ignored. My mom gave me errands to run and I was complaining about it the entire time. But when I returned home, I got a huge surprise. All my friends and family had gathered to wish me. They had decorated the house with beautiful flowers, cards and gifts.

The vacant dining table was now covered with trays of spaghetti, fruit tarts, colourful jellies, and crispy chips and delicious pastries. Everyone started singing as my mother brought out a huge chocolate-vanilla cake. I was overjoyed with so much love and happiness. We ended up playing many birthday party games—musical chairs, pass the parcel, newspaper dance. My friend won 2 games and won chocolates. It was a lot of fun. That evening, while I was getting ready for bed, I reflected on how wonderful it was to have such a nice birthday celebration.

Birthdays are a significant part of everyone's life. It makes people feel special on that day and deepens their gratitude.

My Thirteenth Birthday Party

I will always cherish the memory of my thirteenth birthday party—we visited an amusement park. All of my close cousins and friends were invited to the celebration. My parents drove us and took us to the theme park. I was astounded by the sight of the big rides at the park as soon as we arrived. People dressed up as clowns and performed stunts that were quite amusing. We waited in line to get on the roller coaster, which is one of my favourite rides. The ride was incredible. It rose to such a great height before dropping suddenly—it was a thrilling experience. We also enjoyed other rides, including a merry-go-round. Before we went home, we had dinner at a nearby restaurant where we cut my favourite vanilla cake. It was one of my best birthday parties.

My Sixteenth Birthday Party

I celebrated my sixteenth birthday this year. In our family, turning 16 is a big deal for women. My parents went all out and booked a banquet hall for my birthday and invited all my friends and close family members. My mother and I went shopping for my birthday dress. I chose a lilac gown with flowers and glitter on it. When I reached the venue, I was astonished to see how beautiful everything looked. My friends and family had already arrived before me and started singing happy birthday when I entered. We clicked millions of pictures, danced to our favourite songs and played our childhood games. My friends made me open their presents and they were all so amazing. My parents and grandparents were so happy looking at me and enjoying my day. They gave me a beautiful necklace with my initials on it and I wear it everyday. I am grateful to have such thoughtful family and friends.

Ways To Celebrate Birthdays

There are many ideas children can come up with to celebrate their special day. But sometimes, we all get stuck and wonder how we can celebrate our birthday. So, here are some ideas that you can use—

Amusement Parks | No matter how old you get, rides and retro video games never fail to impress you. Plan a day at an amusement park, call the manager ahead of time and make the arrangements that suit your wants. You can get a private area booked for food and beverages.

Home It In | Celebrating at your home is one of the common ideas that always work. Decorate your living room with balloons, photos and banners and invite all your close friends and family. You can order food and cake from a caterer and they’ll take care of everything.

Cafes/Restaurants | Birthday celebrations at a cafe or a restaurant makes everything easy and breezy. You can book any local cafe for a few hours and ask them to decorate it for your birthday. They’ll take care of food, beverages, decor, and cleaning. You only have to show up with your friends and family and have a great time.

It was more than just two people getting married – it was a big, happy gathering of family and friends. Everyone was so happy, and there were lots of traditions and joyful moments that made it really special.

When and where the party was held? & Who attended the party?

The wedding party I’m excited to talk about took place a few summers ago in a beautiful garden venue. It was a sunny afternoon in June, and the setting was breathtaking with vibrant flowers and decorations everywhere. The guest list was quite extensive, comprising close family members, relatives, friends, and colleagues of the bride and groom. There were people of all ages, from young children to elderly relatives, adding to the lively atmosphere.

It was a traditional yet vibrant ceremony followed by a joyous reception. The entire event was a blend of cultural rituals, heartfelt vows, and lively festivities where everyone came together to celebrate the union of the couple.

At the party, I did a lot of things! I watched the couple get married, which was really beautiful. Then, we all had yummy food from different places. There was a big dance party where everyone was dancing and having fun. I also got to meet new people and talk with friends and family. It was a happy time full of laughter and celebration.

I had a blast at this party because it was just so happy! The couple getting married was really sweet, and everyone was smiling and having a great time. Plus, the food was yummy, and dancing was a total blast. But what I liked the most was being with all my friends and family. We were all laughing and enjoying ourselves together, which made it super awesome. It felt like a day where everything was perfect and full of love.

The best part was feeling all that happiness in one place. I made some great memories, especially dancing and chatting with everyone. It was like a big, happy family reunion with lots of love and joy around. That’s why I’ll always remember this party as one of the best times I’ve had!

Concluding the cue card

Parties like this one, especially weddings, hold a special place in our hearts. They’re not just about the celebration; they’re about creating memories that last a lifetime. This particular party was a beautiful blend of love, laughter, and togetherness.

It reminded me of the incredible joy that comes from being surrounded by the people you care about, celebrating a significant moment in their lives. It’s these gatherings that leave a mark, reminding us of the power of shared happiness and the warmth of connections forged through celebrations.

Describe A Party That You Enjoyed Follow-ups

Here are some probable follow-up questions that could be asked by your IELTS Speaking examiner on the cue card topic – Describe A Party That You Enjoyed:

1. Why do people like parties?

Parties are like a special break from everyday life. They’re a chance to have a blast with friends and maybe even make some new ones. You’ve got music playing, games to dive into, and a dance floor ready for your best moves. They’re a celebration, whether it’s for a birthday or just a get-together, where everyone can relax and have a good time.

2. Why do some people not like going to parties?

For some people, big parties can be overwhelming. They might prefer quieter settings or hanging out with just a few close friends. Some might not enjoy the hustle and bustle of lots of people, loud music, or the pressure of socializing with strangers. It’s all about personal preference and what makes someone feel most at ease and happy.

3. Do you think those who tend to stay at home are less healthy than those who often attend parties?

Not necessarily! Health isn’t solely determined by social activities like parties. While attending parties might provide some social interaction and joy, staying at home doesn’t automatically mean someone is less healthy.

Physical health involves various factors like diet, exercise, sleep, and overall lifestyle choices. Some people prefer quieter settings or have different ways of socializing, like spending time with close friends or family in more intimate settings. They might focus on different aspects of health, like getting enough rest or cooking nutritious meals at home.

Social interaction is essential, but the quality of social connections matters more than the quantity. Both staying at home and attending parties can contribute to health in different ways, and it really depends on how individuals balance various aspects of their lives.

4. Do you think music and dancing are a must at a party?

Not really! Though they’re common and add to the fun at many gatherings, some parties skip them altogether. The vibe often depends on what the host and guests prefer—parties can be enjoyable with or without music and dancing, as long as everyone is having a good time.

5. What would you do if you were disturbed by a neighbour’s party?

If I were bothered by a neighbour’s party, I might start by trying to politely talk to them about the noise. Sometimes people don’t realize how loud they’re being. If that didn’t work or if the noise was too much, I might consider talking to other neighbours or contacting local authorities or the building management if it’s a recurring issue. I think staying calm and respectful while addressing the problem is usually the best approach.

6. What are the differences between holding a party at home and in a public place?

Parties at home often have a cozier, more intimate vibe. You have control over the space, can set the atmosphere, and it’s usually more relaxed. Plus, you’re in a familiar environment, which can make guests feel comfortable.

Public place parties offer more space, maybe better facilities, and less worry about cleanup. They can be more versatile for larger groups and might offer amenities like a dance floor or professional catering. However, they might lack the personal touch and privacy of a home setting.

Each has its perks—it really depends on the occasion and what kind of experience you’re aiming for!

7. Do children like to party?

Absolutely! Kids generally love parties because they’re like treasure troves of fun—filled with games, treats, and hanging out with friends. It’s a chance for them to dive into a world of excitement, maybe with their favorite themes like superheroes or magical adventures. Parties for kids are like hunts for joy and creating awesome memories with their buddies!

8. Do adults like to party?

Certainly! Many adults enjoy parties as well. While the style and activities might differ from kids’ parties, adults often look forward to social gatherings, celebrations, or events where they can unwind, socialize, and have a good time. Parties for adults might involve conversations, music, dancing, good food, and sometimes even games or themed events. It’s a chance for them to relax, connect with friends, or meet new people in a more festive atmosphere.

9. Do you like loud music at parties?

I don’t have preferences, but I understand that loud music can be enjoyable for many people at parties. It often adds to the energetic and lively atmosphere, making dancing more fun and creating a vibrant mood. However, some might prefer quieter settings or lower volumes to chat comfortably. It really depends on individual tastes and what creates the best party vibe for everyone attending.

So, that’s all you need to say in the Describe A Party That You Enjoyed Cue card to get a band 7+ score in the IELTS Speaking exam.

Before you go, take a look at another  cue card based on the ‘Party’ topic .

Sample Answer

Life has given me a lot of happiness and moments to celebrate with my near and dear ones. I have celebrated many happy moments by hosting parties for someone and attending other people’s parties as well.

I have attended many parties on different occasions in my life but the most enjoyable one was a party that I held to mark my elder sisters twenty-fifth birthday. It was a surprise party that I planned with the help of my mother. It was on the twenty-fifth of September last year, and I had started to plan it two days before. After my sister left for work in the morning I started decorating our garden and installing the setup including the tables and chairs. My mother started baking her favourite chocolate cake while I called all her friends and our relatives to the party in the evening.

Sample Answer 2:

Frankly speaking, I am not a party buff and usually attend only those parties wherein I know some people or there is something exciting going on. The party that I am going to talk about is the one I went to last year. It was my friend’s friend birthday bash and she invited all of us. Initially, I was fine with going there but later on my friend told me she cannot come along and I almost cancelled my plan, when my friend’s friend actually called and invited me again to come.

Hesitantly, I said a yes and I would say that was the best yes I had ever said. The party was in Rishikesh, a tourist spot in Uttarakhand, India. It was a night party and there were campfires, music, dance, games and a lot of interesting people. To my surprise, Anusha i.e. my friend’s friend knew a lot of people and had invited them all. And I met and talked to many interesting people that I might otherwise never have come across! This included the self-employed interior designer; marathon runners; entrepreneurs, writers. It was exciting to talk to them and find out how they are connected with the host.

Not only were the people great, but the food and other services were also fantastic. There were stalls of different kinds and one could eat whatever they wish. And it was really tasty food too!!

What’s more, I discovered that actually, I did know quite a few people there after all. I am almost won over. Next time she offers to host a party, I might even find myself looking forward to it, you never know.

Describe a Party [IELTS Speaking]

Describe a Party [IELTS Speaking]

In part 2 of the IELTS speaking test, you may be asked to describe a party. This could seem like a daunting task, but in this lesson I will show you everything you need to know to give a great description.

Today, we will look at:

  • Possible cue cards for describing parties
  • Language for describing parties
  • Sample answers

IELTS Cue Cards: Describe a Party

When preparing for IELTS, you should not memorise answers to questions because there are thousands of possible versions. Instead, it is helpful to think about common question types and topics .

One topic (or sub-topic) that may occur is parties . Of course, this is part of the wider idea of friends and socialising , so you could study party language alongside friendship language. Parties are also related to the topics of festivals, culture, and traditions .

It is very important to carefully read the cue card that you are given so that you do not assume something that is not included on it. As such, we will practise analysing possible cue cards here:

Describe a Party you Attended

First of all, a commonly reported cue card about parties is this one:

Describe a party you have attended. You should say: – what type of party it was – where the party was held – who attended the party and describe what you did at that party.

Here, the question is quite straightforward. The thing you are supposed to describe is an event that took place in the past. It must be some form of party and you must give details about it, including where it was and who attended. You should also talk a little about your own interactions there.

Describe a Party You Enjoyed

Describe a party that you enjoyed going to. You should say: – what the party was about – where the party was held – what people did during the party and explain what you enjoyed about this party.

This cue card is very similar but you can note some important differences. In the first cue card, you could easily have said that you attended a party and disliked it or had no strong opinion about it. However, this cue card requires that you enjoyed the party. (You could also just pretend that you enjoyed it.) Here, you need to describe the party and then relate your feelings.

Planning your Answer

As I said before, you should not aim to memorise answers. This is a bad way to prepare for any part of the IELTS test. However, you can prepare for this sort of question in a few ways:

  • Practise language related to the topic
  • Practise thinking up ideas quickly
  • Think of easily adapted ideas

The third idea is quite useful here. Often, in IELTS, you are given cue cards that say “describe a person/place/object” and then give more information. For example “describe a person who you admire” or “describe a person who you knew when you were young.” These could easily be adapted to be the same person. As long as you do not give a memorised answer, but instead adapt your answer to fit any version of that cue card, you will be fine.

Here, we can think of a party that we have attended and then adapt that answer for the second cue card. We could even adapt it to other cue cards that might change this topic: “describe a party that you threw for your friends” or “describe a party that you didn’t enjoy.”

Of course, doing this may require being imaginative or even lying slightly, but for some people this might be easier than thinking up an honest answer from their memory. After all, even a native speaker like me has trouble thinking up a developed answer in just one minute!

Words to Describe a Party

A big part of being prepared for IELTS topics is knowing the right language to use. Of course, there are no required words, but having a good vocabulary is really important for IELTS. I have written and spoken many times about how to learn vocabulary and how to avoid common mistakes, but it is really important to have a wide range of words and to use them accurately .

In this case, you should look for words that are specific to parties. Because there are so many kinds of parties, this can be quite difficult, but if you have one or two parties in mind, then you can learn vocabulary related to those.

Here are some words to describe parties. We will start with words to describe a party’s atmosphere:

Types of Party

Here are some types of party:

There are, of course, many other types of party and these might be culturally specific. If you know of other ones and want to talk about them, you can read up on Google. Make sure to find a source that was written by a native speaker of English.

different types of party

Sample Answers

Below, I will give sample band 9 answers for the two above versions of the task “describe a party”:

Describe a party you have attended.

describe a party that you attended

A few weeks ago, I went to a pool party at a hotel near my house. There was a bar and a stage for musicians to perform, as well as a swimming pool and various loungers for people to sit or lie on. The place was surrounded by palm trees and other tropical vegetation. In the beginning, there were only a few people there but over the course of the day it became more and more popular. Eventually, the place was full and it was very lively, with many groups of people sitting around and having fun.

Although I live in a hot country, it was a very cold day and so the water was freezing. I hadn’t realised and jumped into the pool. I got quite a shock from the water and from the expressions of other people that went in, they mostly felt the same. In the end, I spent most of the day out of the water, relaxing in the sun with a beer. I also enjoyed listening to the live music and speaking with other guests at the party, most of whom I had never met before. The atmosphere was quite friendly and so it was a good place to socialise.

I gave information about the party and its location in order to be descriptive. One word that I used to describe the atmosphere was “lively.” This is a great word that can impart a lot of meaning.

Sample Answer #2

Here is the second of our cue cards for today:

Describe a party that you enjoyed going to.

describe a party you enjoyed going to

Several years ago, I went back to Scotland, the country where I was born. Whilst there, my family held a big party at my aunt’s house. Because I live on the other side of the world, it is not often that I see my family and certain people like uncles and cousins I see only once every five or six years.

On this particular occasion, my aunt held a garden party for the whole family, and this was the first time in about a decade that I had seen all of these people. We spent all day and all night in the garden, eating and drinking and talking. It felt wonderful to reconnect with my cousins and their own families, many of whom I had not met before.

We had a barbeque and there was a wide selection of beers, wines, and ciders on offer. Everyone had a great time and there were even games played in the evening. I really loved seeing these people again and learning about their lives. It was a great atmosphere and everyone was feeling very jovial. We finally headed home at about three o’clock in the morning!

In this answer, I have described a different kind of party and given lots of details about it. Some useful words here are “reconnect” and “jovial.” I focused on the social element more than the physical surroundings because in this case that was the most important aspect.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the wedding party was a remarkable celebration that left a lasting impression on my heart. It was a night filled with love, laughter, and unity, showcasing the power of gatherings to bring people closer. Such celebrations are not just parties; they are milestones that remind us of the beauty of life and relationships.

Sample Answer 2: The Surprise Birthday Bash

Another unforgettable party I had the pleasure of joining was a surprise birthday bash for one of my closest friends. The meticulous planning and the joy of successfully surprising her made it an extraordinary celebration.

The party was organized at her favorite restaurant, which we had secretly booked for the evening. Decorations were themed around her interests, including a live music performance of her favorite songs. The climax was when she was blindfolded and led into the venue, only to be greeted by a chorus of "Happy Birthday" from her loved ones. The evening was filled with laughter, heartfelt speeches, and a showcase of friendship that made the party memorable for everyone involved.

Q1: What challenges did you face while planning the surprise party?

A1: The biggest challenge was coordinating everything without letting the birthday girl find out. It required careful planning, secret meetings, and a bit of deception to keep everything under wraps.

Q2: How did the birthday girl react to the surprise?

A2: Her reaction was priceless. She was genuinely surprised and overwhelmed with joy. Seeing her happiness made all the effort worthwhile.

Q3: What aspect of the party did you enjoy the most?

A3: I enjoyed the planning process the most. It was rewarding to see all the pieces come together and witness the successful execution of our surprise plan.

Q4: Do you think surprise parties are better than traditional parties? Why or why not?

A4: Surprise parties have a unique charm due to the element of surprise and the effort behind them. However, whether they are better depends on the person's preference. Some may prefer the anticipation of a traditional party, while others enjoy the thrill of a surprise.

Q5: Would you organize another surprise party in the future?

A5: Yes, I would. The joy and excitement of pulling off a surprise party are unmatched. It's a beautiful way to show someone how much they mean to you.

To conclude, the surprise birthday bash was an exceptional demonstration of friendship and the lengths we go to make our loved ones feel special. It reinforced the idea that the best gifts are not material but experiences shared with those we care about. This party was a testament to the joy and surprise that life offers, making it an experience to remember and cherish.

the best party i have ever attended essay

By Katherine Schulten

  • Nov. 30, 2016

The photos above are from one of the most famous parties ever held — the Black and White Ball that the writer Truman Capote gave in New York City 50 years ago.

While we don’t expect that you’ve been to many events that have required ball gowns and 60-carat diamonds, think about the parties you’ve attended where, like this one, many elements have come together to make them especially enjoyable and memorable.

As you think, read “ 50 Years Ago, Truman Capote Hosted the Best Party Eve r.” It begins:

What if you gave a party and everybody came? That is precisely what occurred on the drizzly night of Nov. 28, 1966, when 540 of Truman Capote ’s nearest and dearest turned out for what the writer insisted on calling his “little masked ball for Kay Graham and all of my friends.” The evening survives on film and in the recollections of the guests who are still alive 50 years later. It was a party of a kind we are unlikely to see again, given that it allowed for a then unheard-of, but now more common, coming together of disparate social spheres. “There will never be another first time that somebody like Andy Warhol could step into a room with somebody like Babe Paley,” said Deborah Davis, the author of the 2006 book “Party of the Century: The Fabulous Story of Truman Capote and the Black and White Ball,” referring to one of Capote’s so-called swans — the socialite wife of William Paley, who built the CBS network. Before the Black and White Ball, no one had ever imagined, let alone attended, a formal party with a guest list so wildly catholic that it brought into one room the poet Marianne Moore and Frank Sinatra, Gloria Vanderbilt and Lionel Trilling, Lynda Bird Johnson and the Maharani of Jaipur, the Italian princess Luciana Pignatelli (wearing a 60-carat diamond borrowed from Harry Winston) and the documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles. When Capote summoned his pals for a night of dancing (and spaghetti and chicken hash at midnight), he was as famous as he would ever be, and flush with the profits from his critically acclaimed best-selling nonfiction book “In Cold Blood.” In the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza hotel, starting at 10 o’clock that night, European aristocrats rubbed elbows with novelists and scholars; social register blue bloods drank Taittinger Champagne with the denizens of Hollywood and Broadway; the stolid middle-class citizens of Garden City, Kan., who had played host to Capote during the years he had spent researching his masterpiece, danced to the Peter Duchin Orchestra alongside the photographer and film director Gordon Parks , who would later joke that he — along with Harry Belafonte and Ralph and Fanny Ellison — represented “the black of the Black and White Ball.”

Students: Read the entire article, then tell us:

— Would you have liked to have attended the Black and White Ball? What aspects of it sound especially appealing?

— What’s the best, most enjoyable or most memorable party you’ve ever been to, or hosted? What made it so special?

— If you could host a fantasy party where you could spend what you liked and invite whomever you pleased, what would your party be like? Where would it be held? What would people wear, eat and do?

Sample answer:-, introduction.

Well, I am an extrovert type of person who likes to enjoy and every moment of life. To enjoy my life, many times I organize parties such as birthday party and so on. Sometimes, I like to attend parties of other ones such as my relatives or friends. Here I would like to talk about a birthday party which I attend last year. I describe it briefly.

talk about a party

On the day of the party, I went to his home because his parents organized this party at his own house . His house was decorated with lights and flowers. It looked like a bride. Then, the party started at 8 o’clock when my friend cut his birthday cake. This cake was baked by his own mom because his mother has open a bakery.

What Happened in Party?

When he cut the cake, all the persons who were present in that party started clapping for him and sung birthday theme song. After it, we gave gifts to the birthday boy. In addition, the food stalls were also set up there. I ate a variety of food there such as Chinese, Italian, and other continental food. The food on stalls was mouth-watering. I also tasted that birthday cake. It was so delicious. Apart from it, after eating food, I danced on the dance floor with my friend. We danced together on rock music. Also, I clicked some photographs in this party. I keep these pictures save on my mobile phone. Whenever I see these pictures, I recall the sweet memories of my life.

All in all, this party was too good and full of fun. I will never forget it during my whole life.

Narrative Essay Example about My Birthday Party

This year was so cold with freeze blowing compared to another years. Depressing drizzle days arrived neither my birthday.

All my cousins, aunts and family friends were invited for the occasion celebration. Not that I would wann to talk to them or look into their fake, cow looking faces, but it’s my parents inviting them every single year. My mom prepared for me a special sparkling pink dress that I had to wear. She knows I hate pink, but she got them for me anyway or maybe she didn’t even bother. Pretty disturbing cut of the dress combinated with the ugliest shade of pink made me look like rotting strawberry.

This glamorous day was supposed to be a day full of excitement, joy and expectations. The living room was tastefully decorated with very aromatic flowers, balloons and colourful paper buntings. As I was walking down the stairs a presently good smell burced into me. Smell of properly baked chicken with a sense of sezam and baked batatat potatoes. The whole stairwall was covered with sparkling glitters and shining little lights like in Hollywood. The music was already on so that meant someone had already arrived. I was walking as slowely as possible, if I could I wound crawl like snail, but with thith dress like this it was nearly impossible. I was suspicious who came so early and into my surprise, it was me cousin S. with his family I haven’t seen in months.

A euphoria of happiness came and I started screaming and brushed into S. arms. He hugged me so tight I could nearly breath. He changed. He was taller and much more musculant then last summer. Me finally being physically close to him, feeling his warmth and hearing the beat of his heart made me feel like I’m not alone anymore in this house. I missed him so much and I had so many things to tell him that I nearly forget to welcome other members of his family.

Soon the celebrations began when all the guests arrived. They were all waiting for me because I was talking to S. and didn’t know they wanted to start the party. They welcomed me by clapping hands and handshakes as if I was some kind of a celebrity. All the sweaty hands were all over me and I just wanted to bury myself. The birthday cake had been placed on a large table with fifteen candles fixed on it. It was a large and beautiful chocolate cake. I would rather have a vanilla one, but grandmom is allergic to vanilla. Dad lighted the candles with grandpas old lighter like little lives. The little lights were moving and waiving and small drops of wax started dropping on top of the cake. They were slowly sliding down towards sides of birthday candles while everyone was singing Happy Birthday to me. They were all out of harmony and just by the look on their faces I could tell that no one was enjoying that moment. I could feel all their eyes staring at me as I was trying not to laugh. When this moment (internity) of cowardness finished, I blew the candles in one blow, felt just like “victory”.

I had to sit on the head of the table because that’s a tradition in our families when someone has a birthday. The guests were served with appetizer, soup, main course, alcohol, soft drinks and tea. S. always sneaks some good rum for us and then we dink it in our backyard as everyone is already dunk at that time. We used to play we’re drunk pirates and we would kidnap our cousins and torture them. While all the slimy people at the table were having so much fun, merry-making and laughing at jokes that weren’t even funny.

When the party was over, I unpacked the gifts. I was surprised to, actually find so many lovely gifts. My father got me a new guitar. My mother bought me the pink dress and gave me a voucher to her favourite hair salon. But the loveliest gift was from S. who gave me a bouquet of red roses with our photo in the middle.

I thanked my parents for “the best birthday party ever”, said goodbye to my best cousin S. and went to bed.

Cue Card # 45: Birthday party or celebration you attended

Ielts cue card/ candidate task card # 45, describe a birthday party or celebration you have attended recently..

You should say:

  • whose birthday it was
  • who attended the party
  • where the party was held

and describe whether you enjoyed it or not.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

Sometimes, I really wonder why many people who do not care much about my well-being the whole year, but then suddenly, on my birthday start “remembering” me and “wishing” for me all the best. Then I answer myself ‘maybe this is a special way of saying that we care’. But what I never question is our “rights” to “celebrate life” no matter how they come. And if it comes by celebrating a birthday of our loved one, then so be it!

My friend, James, a very rich person, never really liked to celebrate any of his birthdays without me no matter how much I “disapproved” of big parties. So, the other day, about a few weeks ago, when he told me that he would have a “surprise” for me on his next birthday to be held in the next several days, I became a little curious.

So, I decided to attend the “surprise” birthday party, and a “surprise” it really was! The birthday party was attended only by a couple of dozen of people as opposed to at least “few hundreds”. In fact, the party was attended only by some of the very “familiar faces” whom we knew from our very early high school years along with his family. The party was held at his residence instead of a big hotel conference room with plenty of decoration inside. On top of that, it was only a 5-pound cake, with some very ordinary looking candles on top, to contend with as opposed to “struggling” to cut one of the biggest cakes in the market, a bakery shop would usually ever venture to prepare for a birthday party. So, there were indeed surprises for me at the birthday party, one after another!

So, anyway, the birthday celebration had started at midnight very casually, but it carried on for a longer period of time than expected with all of us enjoying our strawberry chocolate cakes and soft drinks, followed by a nice “home-cooked” dinner meal for each.

After leaving my friend’s place, I felt like it was one of the best birthday celebrations I had ever attended mainly because I was able to meet some of my friends from the old days. In fact, it was just so refreshing and “liberating” to be able to talk and debate with those friends at the party, just like when we were some young boys, about some “trivial” matters instead of “boasting” how much money we made last year from our bonuses, and what kind of cars we bought recently. However, the “big” moment came when my birthday friend came to me and told me finally how much he actually appreciated my idea of a “simple” birthday. So, yes, it was a birthday, I must say, that I enjoyed thoroughly from the very start to the very end, not because it was organized according to my own “taste and preference”, but because it allowed us to celebrate our “lives” just as they were with nothing to complain.

Study the types of questions that have been formulated based on the cue card and how to go about with your response:

Describe a music concert you have seen.

You should say:

  • what kind of concert it was
  • where and when it took place
  • who you saw it with
  • and explain whether you enjoyed this music concert or not

Sample Answer 1

I am not a huge fan of concerts because of the crowds and the unnecessary hype created around them. Once I wanted to give musical concert tickets as a birthday gift to my friend. Even after trying hard, I could not get hold of it, and she was very upset. Although I am a huge fan of Linkin Park, I never really got a chance to attend one of their concerts.

[do_widget id=custom_html-22]

My only recollection of a concert is a musical concert organized by my college. I was a volunteer, so I had to attend it. Different groups of people were invited to perform at it. The concert began with a local singer who sang popular folk songs and commercial hits. He was followed by a famous band who played instrumentals. This gave the student crowd a chance to cool down after they had danced to the songs of the local singer. After the instrument was over, another rock band came on stage. They ‘rocked’ the stage with their performance and the air became electric. But the next presentation, a face-off between the two bands – made this event memorable for me.

This concert took place in the college auditorium. Being a part of the organizing committee, I knew the schedule. It took planning for about a month and a half to put this event together. On the D-day , I arrived at the venue earlier because I had to look into the final preparations. The concert began at 8 p.m. with the arrival of all the guests. Some of our professors and the Dean welcomed the guests, and eventually they left the auditorium for the students to enjoy.

I could not enjoy the first two performances because I had duty backstage. Later, I met my sister whom I had invited to the event and we enjoyed the remaining show with some of our friends. When the last performance of the day began, there was pindrop silence. Everyone was anxious to see how the two bands would match the different genres of music. While one was soft and soothing, the other was loud and energetic. Initially, the two bands were playing their pieces one by one. Gradually, they started to merge the two genres, and it seemed that they were playing parts of the same song together. The duet was mesmerizing and ended in thunderous applause from the audience.

We came back home with the performances etched in our minds. Although I did not have the chance to attend any more concerts, I can proudly say that my only experience of a concert was a fantastic one.

Sample Answer 2

Music is my passion, and among various genres that I follow, Indie rock is one of my favourites. Earlier, I was a fanatic of various kinds of rock music, but now, it has changed only due to the rock band named Euphoria by Dr Palash Sen and other band members. So, when my father got some free VIP passes to one of their concerts, it was a moment of utmost joy for my sister and me.

Fortunately, my father had a seminar around the time of the concert in Mumbai and my mother had to meet her best friend, so we tagged along. The music concert was to be held at Dublin Square, Phoenix Market City, Kurla from 7 pm. As my father was busy with his work and it was not safe to leave us alone, my mother and her friend accompanied us as they too liked Dr Palash Sen.

It was good to see that the concert started on time and we were eager to see how unique the presentation and feel would be. It was very crowded, but thanks to the VIP passes, we got seats in an excellent position. So, we could enjoy the band play and did not have to strain our necks to look at the stage. The band belted out their popular numbers, like `Dhoom Pichak Dhoom`, `Maheri` to name a few and the crowd went mad. Everything about the concert was awesome. But, a little scope to meet the members personally would have made the experience a dream come true.

  • Hype – to promote or talk about something more than needed Example : There was a big hype for the movie.
  • Face off – a direct confrontation of two groups Example : The two warriors had a face-off in the battlefield
  • D-day – the day that is chosen for the beginning of an important activity Example : I was very excited as the D-Day for the wedding arrived.
  • Mesmerizing – very attractive, as if magical Example : The beauty of the lake in between the two mountains was mesmerizing.
  • Thunderous – extremely loud Example : The thunderous sound from the workhouse attracted the worker’s attention.

This is a collective effort of the Linkedin community to figure out what makes an event outstanding. We have a 1000+ Event Planning & Management Group there which I invite you to join.

If you’d like to answer to the next question and be featured on a post like this check out this link .

Here is the question:

What was the most outstanding event you attended? What did you enjoyed? What worked particularly well? What did the management do that you perceived as remarkable?

What’s in it for you, reader? The chance to get insights for your next event. I suggest you go through all the answers as they entail great feedback and inspiration.

The best answer (the first you’ll see below) was selected, as always, according to my own preference. You can use comments to vote yours.

A few considerations:

– Incredible to notice how plenty of people indicated events of more than 10 years ago. What is going on with current events? I guess it is becoming harder and harder to impress and exceed expectations. Looks like we all need to deal with this.

– A lot of people talked about their marriage of children birth. I didn’t leave that out as I think there is a lesson there. Those are the events where you are the protagonist. It would be difficult to get more involved than this. The lesson is: the more you involve and release control, the better the satisfaction.

And now the answers:

Two really good events I participated in took place in Toronto and both involved social media. One was Podcamp Toronto which was a two day conference on podcasting, blogging and everything social media. The other was a hastily planned Geek dinner in Toronto. The experiences I took away from these two events had less to do with social media (though I learned a ton and developed wonderful contacts) as it did with how important it is to set expectations and goals for attendees at an event before it starts. At both events, the networking (more exchange of ideas and best practices than business development though there was some of that too) was at the core of the event. Everybody knew it. Everybody came prepared to share, to talk to listen. There was very little arm crossing (that internationally recognized non verbal cue of stand-offishness) That openness led to tremendous communication opportunities which built great relationships which in my opinion are at the core of every great event.

– Colleen Norris – Owner Loving Connections LLC says:

Last night I attending an amazing event. It was the first night of a workshop entitled “Empowerment Dialogue & Gestalt Dreamwork” I learned so much in 4 hours, but what I really enjoyed was feeling welcomed by a bunch of strangers. What worked so well was even though everyone was on different levels of understanding it was perfect for everyone. The facilitator was friendly and a joy to be around.

– Julia Marrocco – Executive Performance Coach says:

The most outstanding event was during a corporate awards trip to Bangkok for a week or so. There was the most amazing feast, outdoors, in gorgeous tropical weather, we accessed the venue by boat, and authentic Thai folkloric dancing kept us amazed and steeped us in the history and culture of the land. I will never forget it. Everything from start to finish was smooth and it seemed like the event happened by magic. I can only imagine what a tremendous amount of work it must have been but I never witnesses one frown, one hurried person, and everyone facilitating or helping at the event looked as if they had taken a happy smiley pill! Outside of corporate events, (I have attended zillions…good and bad both) I would have to say anything with Cirque du Soleil will always be a smashing hit. No one performs like them. If you had a bad event in every other way, and you ended by taking everyone to any Cirque performance (excluding Zumanity) you will have good reviews of the event. That is because when they see Cirque, everything else will leave their mind and they will so amazed that’s all they will think about for weeks to come. So end on a positive note.

– Glenn Curry – Partner, Efficient Technologies LLC says:

SIGGRAPH convention, Orlando ’94. Disney closed their water park one night to guests only. Free food, wine, beer and bands. The whole park all night lots of happy drunk graphics people sliding down water slides all night! OK, then there was the national sales meeting for Superscope/ Marantz ’75. In LA, including a private party with live entertainment at the Playboy Mansion. Hugh was good friends with Joe Tushinski. Almost forgot the Kenwood Electronics sales meeting ’77, Stayed at the Royal Sonesta Hotel New Orleans, a grand hotel in the heart of the French Quarter on Bourbon Street. In review, I have to apologize and wish to state without reservation that I attended a similar event 4 times in my life and each was tied for 1st place event. I have four children and I was present at the event of each’s birth. No other event comes close.

– Joseph Bachana – President, DPCI says:

2 years ago i heard Jack Trout speak at the Microsoft annual Partner event. Nobody seemed to know this marketing legend, but his talk was so insightful. He pulled some concepts out of his book “Differentiate or Die”. I remember a few things about the presentation. First, he used Powerpoint, which surprised me since I usually hate Powerpoint presentations but he aced his. Second, he was going over some of the real clunker brand strategies out there and he had the audience dying of laughter. To this day when I’m in a marketing brainstorming meeting and one of us comes up with a nutty position statement, I remember Jack’s presentation. The third thing i remember, which I’ll never forget ever probably, is that Jack was talking about projects that he himself took on to help worldwide brands with their positioning statements. I was just so in awe that this man has helped great brands with their messaging, all with very clear positioning statements as opposed to all the frilly technology-gyrating marketing tricks we all use today.

Back in 1986, I attended the Guterman Bar mitzvah party on the Queen Elizabeth II. It was amazing and left a solid, positive impression on me, even though I was only 14 at the time and only got invited because my mother worked for them, but I considered them family and I felt like I truly belonged. Little did I know that the event would plant the seed in the subconscious of my brain to one day start an event-planning business.

– Chris Catoggio – Independent Event Services Professional says:

The Rotary International Convention at the McCormick Center in Chicago in 2005. It is an incredible experience to participate with Rotarians from all over the world. It enlightens you to the global impact one organization has by providing humanitarian service and helping build goodwill and peace throughout the world. From an event standpoint, it is remarkable how thousands of people are transported, seemingly effortlessly, throughout the city to attend the many events. The quality and scope of events made this an unforgettable experience.

– Carol White Llewellyn – Tourism Activist & Association Publisher, TravelHost of Rochester & the Finger Lakes says:

I attend events often and also used to do event planning for a trade association. The most remarkable events I’ve attended/planned were those that were a collaborative effort between two or more organizations, focused on a particular topic, and held outside of either organization’s home base. They also had exceptional programming or break-out work sessions, were planned collaboratively among the organizing parties involved so all partners were equal stakeholders, representing their members’ likes, dislikes and interests. They also offered great food and fun entertainment. These events attracted a calibre of attendee interested in both networking and benefitting from the program. They also came to have a good time. When you attract a large group of attendees with these common goals and put them in an educational, yet fun atmosphere, you have the recipe for an outstanding event.

– June Mattiza – E Imagineer at The Media Collective says:

The best event, how about my top 3 events, 1. I traveled with a client i(as press management) who was playing at the New Orleans Jazz Festival, backstage and got to meet some of the greats in blues and contemporary music with the same client got to attend the Grammy awards when he received one for his latest release. 2. The first Webmaster World Conference that I ever attended in Las Vegas, I learned a lot but the big benefit was the friendships that began at that conference. 3. Luxury Travel Expo – Traveled with a client to industry trade show to attend industry round tables, marketing tracks and networking. Not only did this help with in market intel but that year while I was there, I got to meet a great in the Resort Hotel Development world unbeknown to me, I had coffee in the morning with Steve Winn shared a conversation about family, kids general banter, then we both had a meeting to go to,,, it was the same one and he was the keynote speaker.. Wow. 4. I2 Planet Conventions – Awesome event in which I helped with the media presentation, It was the best mix of education, variety of industries and after long days conference style they really did it right with their networking/party events.

– Walter Giacovelli – Knowledge Strategist says:

Best event i followed, according to me is always the next i have to follow, because i project on it my dreams, my ideas, my wish of making best reality around me, and make me feel like a child waiting for a long time best toy for present.

– Ron Coble – Owner, ImportExportHelp says:

They were about 30 years ago when I was somewhat naive but thankfully impressionable – Amway motivational meetings (no I left them about 28 years ago). They had some very good motivational speakers and I have said many times that although I do not believe there are many people who ever succeed in that business model, the spark(s) that these motivational weekends provided me was what helped me to move forward into various other business ventures in the ensuing almost 30 years. I really believe that had I not gone to those weekends I would have never gotten into these various business ventures and probably would still be working in a job for someone else rather than in my own business.

– Richard Tabor Greene – Professor of Knowledge and Creativity Management at Kwansei Gakuin University says:

Siemens’ Invent Events, 15 years ago–a series of 200 person 4 day mass workshop events wherein 200 people from a dozen companies/functions invented 100 things and patented them. Included every 3 hour wandering comedy and minstrel groups that punctuated everyone’s sitting and meeting mindsets, and morning breakfasts of all 200 reporting prior day results and present day needs to everyone else (using comic formats), and mid-day “fill in questionnaires or answer questions from other workshop groups” lunch sessions deliberately helping other workshop groups. 100 patents were reliably written up and submitted by end of each 4 day session.

– Silvia Malesardi – Events management Assistant at Trentino Tourist Board says:

Within the last Years Vienna has become one of the most wanted travel locations in Europe to celebrate the New Year. New Year Eve in Vienna 2006 (Silvesterpfad)was an amazing experience full of spirit of Vienna between history and innovation. The celebration for the international Mozart Year 2006 were the main theme. The entire city was an extraordinary open-air party inclusive last minute waltz course all over Vienna’s first district, escape three-four time at various clubs (i.e. WUK, Passage, Flex,…) or celebrate in one of the many pubs at the ‘Gürtel’ (B72, rhiz, Chelsea,…) or at Bermuda triangle (i.e. krah krah, Bermudabräu, Brennerei,…). Before midnight we can watch the official fireworks, illuminate the city! There was also start the year’s ball season with a banger, famous ‘Kaiserball’. At the magnificent halls of the ‘Hofburg’ you first enjoy a splendid dinner and then mark the beginning of the new year in three-four time. At midnight we hear the famous Pummerin (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) strike. It mustn’t miss famous ‘Neujahrskonzert’ the day after which is performed by the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra. The management of all the events was building by a perfect network of the City government, the Stadt Wien marketing und prater service (the events agency of the city) and the Vienna Tourist Board. All of this celebration including the really spirit of Mozart genius! Wonderful!

– Anuroopa Banerjee Gupta – Marketing Communications expert says:

The best event ever attended by me was this GRAND Wedding in Rajasthan, Jaipur. The venue was a palace decorated with jasmine and orchids. ornate silver furniture. Beautiful drapes and lights all around; glorifying the venue even more. Then came the Groom with a Royal Procession seated in an elephant- with well decorated horses 15 in nos, 10 camels, 10 vintage carriages and many vinatge cars and of couse men with torches and over 500 guests following the procession. The groom and guests were all given the most Royal welcome possible. The bride followed in an exotic palanquin amidst folk performers singing and beating drums. The Groom and Bride exchanged garlands on top of a crane and were then brought to the ground and drove around the palace on a vintage carriage. All guests were served food on silverware and the fireworks and folk performances throughout the evening were enchanting. What an event!! Well, it cost a fortune- more than 7 millions; so I overheard!!! Truly A BIG FAT INDIAN WEDDING.

– Dan Pepper – Sales & Marketing Executive for Tech Startups says:

Easily Fall Internet World in 1996 at the Javits. Alan Meckler had just moved the event from Boston to NYC to meet overflow demand. The companies and ideas that sprang forth from that show generated billions of dollars in wealth creation before the bubble burst in 2000. The excitement on the show floor and sessions was palpable.
*Sometimes an idea is all you need for a great event!* This was tech’s answer to the “Thrilla in Manila.”

– Shawn Carter – Senior Financial Analyst at Blackhawk Network says:

As far as business, an all-hands at a company I worked at. They had coreographed with many famous football players how they did that year and what our new brand would be about. It was over the top in cool, fun and on target. The CEO did a very slick presentation with the slides answering his questions. All in all very fun.

– Frank Feather – Webpreneur, Author says:

The most seminal event in my professional life was “The 1st Global Conference on the Future” (Toronto, 1980) under the theme “Thinking Globally, Acting Locally.” What was remarkable was the sheer size of the event: 6,400 delegates from 60 countries, with 1,000+ speakers over 5 days, in some 26 main topic themes or tracks. The vast smorgasbord of ideas spawned excited conversation well into each night, and resulted in numerous global/local initiatives, as well as thousands of personal network connections and friendships. In turn, that event launched my career as a futurist, and also took me to China where I met my Chinese wife. Needless to say, there has never been a second such conference. I also am somewhat biased, because I led the team which planned the event, and I was honored to serve as its Chairman. But it was truly remarkable, as any attendee will attest even today. On a personal level, the two most remarkable events were when my wife and I went to China to adopt our two daughters. Every moment of those two meetings is forever etched in my mind and my heart

– Mary Lascelles – CONCIERGE RELOCATION SERVICES says:

Three years ago our company put on the “Paddywack” for our agents. It’s up there with the best of events in all of my years working anywhere. This was an intimate black tie event held at the beautiful Cascade Theatre in Redding, CA…a recently renovated 1930’s theatre that was impressively done. Drinks to start out and then awards were given to the top agents in our office for the previous year. We had a magician who was incredible and John Bearden, President of our franchise, joined in. There was so much to feast the senses that night. The venue was perfect. The next day we brought in motivational speakers…starting with John Bearden who is always so engaging and interesting. The concept was to say thanks for a good year and celebrate the success while spurring everyone for another good year. Our company has always been “out of the box” which makes it a somewhat unique place to work. The event is still remembered!!

– Amy Vercruysse – Owner, Combo Platter: Event Marketing & Management says:

The events I attend are more consumer vs. business-oriented such as trade shows, and then to narrow it further they are more entertainment related. For sheer sensory overload and an overabundance of things to do, I have to say South by Southwest wins hands down. The Natural Products Trade Show West in Anaheim did a nice job the 2 times I attended for a trade show that also had some consumer element to it (a nice mix of b-to-b and b-to-c). For pure musical pleasure, the Ponderosa Stomp in NOLA (next week) is my favorite music event simply because there’s nothing else like it anywhere for true music purists and connoisseurs.

– Muhammad Ali – Marketing Consultant says:

I live in Dubai…No Outstanding events take place here…I play music and I have never seen any concert organized properly in Dubai…Even the events I have played at are not managed properly by the events management team.

– Illona Cowen – Information Technology and Services Professional, Technical Writer, Business Analyst says:

Two events come to mind. One hosted by Microsoft. They thought of everything! The other event was hosted by Verisign. They had live music, live entertainment (Blues Bros.) and had pictures taken immediately with them, fireworks, great location. Excellent food.

– Melissa Deputy – Conference Planner, Public Speaker says:

The most outstanding event I attended was Tupperware’s 50th “Gold” Anniversary with approximately 7,000 in attendance in Orlando in August 1996. The awards and education and free product give aways were unrivaled by any other events prior. Of course, it was special to me because I was recognized as 29 in the nation of those in attendance.

– Allen Stevens – Event Manager at Legacy Marketing Partners says:

1999 Camel Bartenders Ball, NYC. Annual “thank-you” event for all the bar staff in the area whose venues participated in the Camel Club Program. We had 4000 people at the Hammerstein Ballroom, with Grandmaster Flash DJing and Lenny Kravitz as the headliner. Free admission (though our free tickets were getting scalped on eBay for hundreds of dollars) with open bar and hors d’ourves for all. It was a grueling 22-hour day, but it was an epic party.

– Brenda Christensen – Sr. Account Supervisor at The David James Agency says:

The Nintendo party at CES 1989. It was spectacular in every sense of the word…not a dime was spared. Live Hollywood Squares style game show, luminaries, celebrity impersonators, live Kenny Loggins concert…it was over the top over the top.

In March 2005 I attended the “International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security” organised by Clud de Madrid in commemoration of the terrorist attacks on the city of Madrid the year before. The Club of Madrid is an independent organization dedicated to strengthening democracy around the world by drawing on the unique experience and resources of its Members – 70 democratic former heads of state and government. More than 1.200 people participated in that gathering, amongst them 200 experts, 17 Heads of State and Government, the Secretary General of the United Nations and many other leaders from international organizations and delegations from more than 70 countries. I could attend this event thanks to a parallel event organised by the students association AEGEE. The venue, tuition and logistics worked just perfectly. The conference itself was terrific. The power of this organisation (Club de Madrid) to bring top speakers and experts was impressive. Several conferences and plenaries very interesting. Just a pity to have missed many since some were running in parallel. Seeing dozens of world decision-makers was a shocking experience (e.g. noticing in the escalator that the lady before me was… Madeleine Albright).

– Suzanne Levison – Owner, SLS Creative and Staffing and Recruiting Consultant says:

One that I was involved with production. A major sports gathering including headline entertainment, high profile sponsors, political personalities such as Jesse Jackson..The fact that 24 hours prior to the event we were notified that, in addition, another political figure would arrive, we would be meeting with the secret service agents prior to redesign the room and general areas for security reasons. What I enjoyed was the challenge. What worked well was our team, who sprung into action with no sleep, and rose to the challenge so that the entire evening flowed perfectly.

– Joseph Templin – Head Geek, Unique Minds Consulting Group, LLC says:

The birth of my children.

– Machelle Lovin – Successful leader, partner and follower says:

I was young….I’m guessing about 8 years old. My parents worked for the first multi-level international cosmetic company. (look up Glenn Turner and read all about it) It was at a convention in Orlando. After a day of various events full of experts in cosmetics and the fashion industry, seminars, and incredible motivational moments, they packed a hotel suite full of select people that were attending the convention. Most of these people were from small towns and had big dreams. The President of the company spoke and introduced a few other people who also spoke. Each with more vigor and excitement. Then the main guy (salesman) spoke to the attendees. In very powerful and elegant words he told them they had what it took to be successful. That their company was the one for them and the product they offered was all they needed. He pumped them up…spiritually, emotionally, physically, cheering….E.O.G.O…..E.O.G.O……some people were jumping up and down as others clapped and chanted…E.O.G.O….Every One Get One. Now, I don’t know if it was the product that everyone was getting one of or if it was every one get one person under you (pyramid marketing). But what I do know is that at such a young age, I learned how people need to belong and be accepted. I learned how they need to feel empowered and just need some attention. I learned that one person can have such a presence that the whole world will follow them. (the world as it was as an 8 year old girl in that hotel room) But wow, how that lesson has proven true as I’ve gotten older and experienced life.

– Tamara Dunst – Senior Manager, Events at Nobel Biocare

I’d have to say that with all the events I have managed and attended throughout my career, by far the best are the Disney events I have attended as a consumer. Disney often holds “merchandising” events at their parks where attendees actually pay to come and buy stuff. Only Disney can do this. However, you hardly realize that you are dropping a couple of hundred dollars on artwork and memorabilia when you are surrounded by such amazing “theme-ing.” Most of these events are held in one of their hotel’s large ballrooms and usually center around a park ride or Disney movie. It seems that they spare no expense in awing their customers with dramatic lighting, realistic props, and interactive activities. You get favors that seem like they cost a fortune and the food is quite excellent. Music, performances and speakers round out these memorable evenings, which, remember, are just there for you to buy merchandise. Disney really knows how to create a complete experience – tantalizing all the senses, tying in to them seamlessly and giving customers the craving for more.

– Dave Weinberg – Manager, Marketing & Client Relations says:

A few years ago, while working at Sony Pictures, I attended a Movie Premiere for “Big Fish”. After the red carpet and movie the whole lot moved to the after party at Hammerstein in Manhattan. The crew was able to recreate the town form the movie and the circus inside the theater. Food was served by old time dinner staff on red picknick tables while acrobats performed high above. It was incredible.

What is the best party you have been to?

best party

We have been asking what is the best party that you have ever been to and why.

Please leave your answers in the ideas box below

Christmas party The best party that we ever held was a Christmas party. It was held a few years ago on Friday 18th December – the day that the children broke up from school. We started the party at 6pm and allowed the kids to come along as well. We put together a big station with a couple of cocktails to get the party in a swing.

We served dry martinis (James Bond style- shaken, not stirred) in classic cocktail glasses with olives. A dry martini is a combination of gin and martini bianco (the green bottle) with an ice cube. We also served champagne cocktails. For champagne cocktails add a sugar cube into the bottom of a champagne glass. Add a small amount of brandy until the sugar cube has taken up all of the brandy. Top up with champagne or sparkling wine (we used Cremant de Loire) and a string of bubbles will come off the sugar cube.

We live in a commuter village so we encouraged the office workers to call in after they got off the train. We prepared a large number of trays of finger food – mostly bought ready prepared from the supermarket, so all we had to do was to serve it out and just pop the trays in the oven to heat it up.

It got everyone into the Christmas mood and went off with a great swing for the weekend. – Pam, near Reading, UK.

The best party we have been to this year was an outdoor lunch at a friend’s house in August.

Two tabels put together on the lawn with a table cloth and 18 people. Lovely!.

The office Christmas Prty was a great one last year. The company took over most of a nice hotel.

A real treat. Unfortunately budgets have been a bit tighter this year, and it wasn’t quite the same.

The best party i’ve ever been to was at a friends house. We had a Eurovision party. Before the party we drew a country to represent, We had to provide food from that country, I should have done a goat recipe but I went fof sure footed sheep instead. We had beer tasting quiz and cheese tasting. We all put a £1 in the kitty half of which went to a charity and the winning team got the other half. The best party that we have been to was the Trinity College Ball in Oxfordshire.

It was lively and filled with a variety of entertainment and amusement options. All you needed was a green wrist pass which gave you access to all areas. They hired Big Sand steel band to perform for the arrival of guests for about 1.5 hours and many people started dancing in a conga line as they heard the steel band.

As soon as we had finished, there were other bands in different marquees, Disco in the main building, numerous food and drink options and also a mini fun fair.

It was the place to be!
