'Under Paris' Finally Puts Netflix in the Shark Movie Business

Stream it or skip it: ‘under paris’ on netflix, a shark-in-the-seine thriller that delivers the ludicrousness you crave, stream it or skip it: ‘jeanne du barry’ on digital, a french-language johnny depp costume drama ... but don't call it a comeback, stream it or skip it: ‘the taste of things’ on acorn tv, a sumptuous foodie film starring juliette binoche.

If you’ve come here looking for the Matt Damon-Greg Kinnear conjoined twin comedy , you’ve come to the wrong place. The Netflix original Stuck with You is something entirely different, although it does involve some level of having your fortunes tied directly to another person. The good news for the characters in this brief French comedy is that their entanglement is temporary. The bad news is they’re losing out on New Year’s Eve to be locked in tight quarters with a stranger.

STUCK WITH YOU : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Gael (Kev Adams) is a standup comedian turned costumed mascot. Hannah (Camille Lellouche) is a high-flying professional. They’re both on their way to meet their significant others in a Parisian apartment building to ring in the new year when the elevator breaks mid-ascent. For various reasons, the people on the outside of the elevator are unable, or unwilling, to help them get out.

So, with nothing better to do, Gael and Hannah overcome their initial revulsion toward each other and begin passing the time by playing tic-tac-toe on the walls of the elevator. Diversion gives way to divulging, as the two dissatisfied companions begin cataloging and chronicling all the ways in which they feel they’ve fallen short of their ambitions. Leave it to New Year’s Eve to prompt introspection and new-found resolution!

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The “elevator pitch” (pun fully intended) is that the film has a concept similar to the Miles Teller-starring American rom-com Two Night Stand , where forces beyond two characters’ control force them to spend far more time together than they’d originally intended. In style, the flashbacks and memory sequences where the present-day characters stand inside the scenes with their past selves recall Annie Hall or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind .

Performance Worth Watching: Kev Adams is really the standout here. The French comedian really gets to shine playing a character who gets to be both juvenile in his humor yet vulnerable in his drama. (Not that Camille Lellouche is bad, but her character is written a bit more shrew-like.)

Memorable Dialogue: The tone gets set early when the emergency dispatcher asks the trapped elevator dwellers, “Is there a child in the elevator?” Hannah wryly responds, “Depends what you mean by “child’.”

Sex and Skin: At the beginning of Gael’s relationship with Prune, as shown in recollection, there’s a whole lot of sexual energy between the two lovebirds. But all the brief glimpses of their torrid carnal tear are tame and fully clothed (although there is some quite loud moaning).

Our Take: High-concept comedies that employ gambits like Stuck with You ’s single-location can get a bit lost in their own cleverness. Frank Bellocq’s lightweight lift of a film, running just 59 minutes, keeps it simple and streamlined. That feature is to the film’s both benefit and detriment. There’s just enough cutting away and visual flourishes to keep the grounded nature of two people stuck in an elevator interesting. But there’s not much unique or unexpected about the story, especially not the two characters who barely develop beyond archetypes. At a tight sub-one-hour runtime, though, Bellocq and co-writer Jean-Luc Cano get in and out just as the thinness of the narrative starts to become evident.

Our Call: STREAM IT! At under an hour, Stuck with You is fizzy holiday fun. It’s got no chance of becoming a New Year’s Eve staple like “Auld Lang Syne” or When Harry Met Sally , but a bit of disposable fun never hurt anybody.

Stuck with You (2022) Movie Review – A light and simple watch

A light and simple watch

Single set movies are notoriously difficult to get right. With very little visual variety, the film instead has to rely on both the acting and the writing to carry things through. Cube is a perfect example of how to get this right in the horror genre, while 12 Angry Men remains an absolute classic to this day.

Stuck with You is not close to the greatness those movies exude, and in many ways the film actually betrays its central premise numerous times to spice things up. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, as there’s some good material in this brief but enjoyable comedic romp.

The story is simple enough and sees two strangers – Gael and Hannah – stuck in an elevator on New Year’s Eve. Thankfully, help will arrive… in the morning. With no cell reception either, the pair are stuck together for the big celebrations. Inevitably, they start to learn more about each other. As a side note, the description Netflix have up for this one is a massive spoiler and I’d recommend not even reading that if you can.

The pair are polar opposites, essentially, and across the hour we learn more about what’s driven these two individuals to end up in an elevator together. I won’t spoil it all here but accompanying these bits of exposition, the film adopts one of two tricks – both of which work pretty well.

The first sees a quirky joke or slapstick moment thrown in for levity after a revealing bit of exposition. The other sees the elevator doors open up and the pair head into their past for a re-enactment of key moments in their life. This does work quite well, especially when Hannah is describing her distrust in men, but of course it also means that this isn’t a complete single-room movie in the conventional sense.

The screenplay is pretty good though and the age old “opposites attract” trope is very much in play here. The jokes are a bit of a mixed bag but usually stick with slapstick or physical comedy. There’s a sprinkling of potty humour too which doesn’t really work and a couple of wordplay jokes that do, but the comedy is likely to be subjective across the board.

There’s nothing particularly outstanding here but Stuck With You is a nice way to kill an hour if you’re after a light and simple romcom to watch.

Stuck with You review – a stale but short take on an overdone trope

stuck-with-you-review

While it’s a rare New Year’s Eve-themed film, Stuck with You is, unfortunately, rather stale and uninspired.

We review the Netflix film Stuck with You, which does not contain spoilers.

The trope of strangers getting stuck in an elevator and having revelations about their lives or forming a strong bond is one that’s been a bit overdone. It’s not that it can’t still be done well (though will anything top the scene with Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail ? ), but it requires compelling actors and a unique take. Unfortunately, the French film Stuck with You doesn’t quite hit the mark and never captures the magic that such a premise depends upon.

Stuck with You review and plot summary

While there are tons of Christmas films , there are fewer New Year’s Eve films , but director Frank Bellocq ‘s Stuck with You attempts to fill that gap. On the last night of the year, strangers Gael ( Kev Adams ) and Hannah ( Camille Lellouche ) are on their way to celebrations in the same building. But the elevator that they are in together gets stuck and won’t let them out. They contact emergency services, which warn them that they’re very busy with other calls and it might be a while before they’re rescued.

After Gael calms Hannah down from her claustrophobia attack, the two surly people begin to open up to each other. They share the issues in their current relationships and those that came from their childhood. Writers Jean-Luc Cano and Frank Bellocq figure out interesting ways to get the action outside of the elevator (because watching two people trapped in a tiny space for almost an hour would not be very engaging). As they describe memories to each other, the elevator doors open, allowing them to step into those memories and observe.

As Stuck with You unfolds, Gael shares how his childhood made him insecure, and now he is trapped in a relationship with a woman who is frustrated by his lack of growth in his career as a writer and comedian as she progresses. Meanwhile, Hannah struggles to trust people and is still scarred by events in her childhood.

The film is decently well-made from a crafts perspective, but unfortunately, neither actor has the comedic ability or charisma to maintain interest in what is largely a two-hander. (It’s all too easy to see why Gael hasn’t been succeeding as a stand-up comedian.) They are lacking in chemistry as a pair, lacking any romantic tension between them that isn’t supplied directly in the script.

Is Stuck with You good?

While there are some interesting ideas in Stuck with You and Bellocq’s attempts to explore the “stuck in an elevator” trope creatively, ultimately, the film flounders. The main pair can’t sustain interest even for its hour-long runtime, and the romance between them feels contrived and stale.

If you’re looking to watch something in French to see if you maintained anything from your high school classes or if you’re desperate for something New Year’s Eve-themed, it might be worth a watch. (Though I would recommend a Céline Sciamma film and When Harry Met Sally instead, respectively.) Otherwise, you can feel safe skipping this one if it pops up in your Netflix recommendations.

Tv/streaming, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, black writers week, stuck on you.

Bo and Walter are joined at the hip, and they like it that way. Their life has become a double act, and they're so efficient behind the counter of their diner in Martha's Vineyard that customers get a free burger if they have to wait more than three minutes. There are of course difficulties involved with being conjoined twins, but they're amiable souls and have learned to accommodate each other. Bo ( Matt Damon ) would happily stay on the island for a lifetime, but Walt ( Greg Kinnear ) is restless and has ambitions; he wants to be an actor. This has already led to an annual crisis involving the local amateur production; as Walt acts, Bo battles stage fright.

"Stuck on You" is the new movie by the Farrelly Brothers, who have earlier dealt with schizophrenics ("Me, Myself and Irene"), fat people (" Shallow Hal "), a one-handed bowler (" Kingpin "), stupidity (" Dumb and Dumber ") and hair gel (" There's Something About Mary "). Their next film, " The Ringer ," will be about an imposter who tries to crash the Special Olympics. The subjects of their comedies are defiantly non-P.C., but their hearts are in the right place, and it's refreshing to see a movie that doesn't dissolve with embarrassment in the face of handicaps.

Walter and Bo are a case study of how to live happily while bonded for life to another person. An operation to separate them would be risky, because their shared liver is mostly on Bo's side, and Walt's chances of survival would only be 50-50. Thus when Walt determines that he must go to Hollywood to try his fortunes as an actor, Bo is a good sport and sadly says goodbye to the gang at the burger bar.

Up until now they have done everything together, including sports; being conjoined is an advantage in baseball, where the twins stand on the mound, one staring down the hitter while the other catches a runner off base. But in Hollywood, life changes, because Walt has an immediate stroke of good luck in his career, while Bo is reduced, literally, to a bystander.

Walt's break comes through a lucky meeting with Cher, who is auditioning for a new TV series she hates and wants to get out of. She thinks maybe a conjoined twin would be the ideal co-star to sink the ratings. Some of the movie's funniest scenes involve Walt acting with Cher while Bo stands behind scenery or is removed by special effects -- but when the press discovers that Cher's co-star is a still-joined twin, the ratings go through the roof.

Meanwhile, romance beckons. Bo has been flirting with an online Los Angeles pen pal for three years, but when he meets May ( Wen Yann Shih ), he's too shy to reveal his condition; keeping the secret involves contortions, evasions and misunderstandings, mostly based on the fact that Walt always seems to be right there at Bo's side. Walt, meanwhile, strikes up a friendship with a poolside babe at their motel. She's April ( Eva Mendes ), a dumb brunette who interprets everything in Southern California terms; seeing the bridge of flesh that joins the brothers at the hip, she casually asks them, "So -- where'd you get this done?" Mendes adds this role of broad comedy to her dramatic work as Denzel Washington's wife in " Out of Time " and an action role in " 2 Fast 2 Furious ," showing herself at home across a range of genres.

The movie's show-biz milieu is much helped by the appearance of famous stars in cameo roles. Jack Nicholson turns up briefly, Jay Leno interviews both twins at once, Cher pokes fun at her own image, and Meryl Streep is the very definition of a good sport in surprise appearance late in the film.

Many of the characters are challenged minorities in one way or another, including Morty ( Seymour Cassel ), who lives in a retirement home, uses a scooter to get around, but still chain-smokes cigars and considers himself a full-service agent. There's a scene where the brothers reduce his fee by pointing out he will, after all, be representing only one of them.

The movie is funny, but also kind-hearted. Much screen time is given to Rocket (Ray "Rocket" Valliere), a waiter in the burger joint. He's a mentally challenged friend of the Farrellys, who makes it clear here why they like him. Their approach to handicaps is open and natural, and refreshing, compared to the anguished, guilt-laden treatment usually given to handicapped characters in movies. The fact that Walt hopes to be a movie star is less amazing, really, than that the Farrellys had the nerve to make a comedy about it.

Stuck with You review: What could go wrong when two strangers get stuck in an elevator on New Year's eve?

follow icon

Netflix recently released a wholesome French romantic-comedy film Stuck with You ( French title : Happy Nous Year ) on December 28, 2022.

The comedy is directed by Frank Bellocq, who is known for his movies, Love Addict and Soda . Stuck with You stars Kev Adams and Camille Lellouche and manages to narrate a heartwarming tale in just under an hour.

The plot of Stuck with You involves two strangers named Gael and Hannah. Their fates get intertwined when they get stuck in an elevator on New Year's Eve and realize they are way more similar than they had expected.

Let's dive into the detailed review of this hilarious holiday film.

Disclaimer: This article contains spoilers .

Stuck with You review: Not all strangers are dangerous

Stuck with You starts with Gael, a man talking on his cell phone and walking on the streets of Paris with a dinosaur costume on. Gael is already late for a New Year's Eve party, and the people around him aren't making things any easier.

He rides an elevator with a grumpy woman named Hannah, who is on her way to breaking up with her long-term boyfriend. When Hannah sees Gael dressed as a dinosaur , she becomes incredibly hostile towards him. The story takes a monumental shift when the elevator they are in malfunctions and they are stuck there together with no chance of getting out until the next day.

Stuck with You is a light-hearted romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by hopeless romantics. This wholesome story of friendship and love runs for just 59 minutes but hits the spot and does a brilliant job of conveying to its viewers that the greatest friendships/romances begin with unusual circumstances.

Despite the events of the entire movie taking place in an elevator, Gael and Hannah are frequently transferred to various settings in the form of flashbacks. When they share a personal anecdote, the elevator magically opens and shuttles them to the setting of the story.

Actors Kev Adams and Camille Lellouche deliver brilliant and convincing performances with various others in supporting roles. The film also has iconic cinematic shots and a subtle background score to help set the mood.

The film has almost zero dull moments with Gael and Hannah constantly conversing hilariously. The dialogues are gripping and manage to keep the audience engaged through the 59 minutes of the runtime.

If you are a fan of wholesome cheerful rom-coms , this one is certainly unmissable.

A lot can happen over an elevator ride

Here is the trailer for Stuck with You .

The official synopsis of the movie reads:

"En route to a party, two strangers get stuck in an elevator on New Year's Eve — and find themselves connecting in unexpected ways. Kev Adams and Camille Lellouche shine in this quick-witted holiday rom-com from director Frank Bellocq."

The film was written by Frank Bellocq and Jean-Luc Cano and was released on Netflix on December 28, 2022.

The movie is streaming on Netflix worldwide.

‘Stuck with You’ Netflix Movie Review - Frank Bellocq’s Film is Sweet and Short

stuck with you movie review

In Frank Bellocq's new film Stuck with You, two strangers, on their way to a party, get stuck in an elevator. Considering it's New Year's Eve and the strangers - Gael (Kev Adams) and Hannah (Camille Lellouche) - are fairly attractive, it's no surprise that these two will eventually fall in love with each other. But before reaching that point, the gap between them will be filled by sad and joyful reminiscences.

Whenever Gael or Hannah tell their story, the elevator door either opens or the walls around them break down and transport them inside the memory. In one of them, a young Gael is humiliated by his cousins. In another one, Hannah has sex with a co-worker in her office. Then there is a tragic recollection regarding an accident. The more intimate details are dispensed, the more the characters come close to one another. At first, they are joined physically and visually through the sight of both of them packed in the elevator. In the end, they are also emotionally connected.

Stuck with You is a "designed" film. Meaning: Each detail is deliberately manipulated to make Gael and Hannah a couple. For instance, Hannah is about to break up with her boyfriend, and later, Gael finds out that his girlfriend is cheating on him. That last information arrives just when he praises her for sticking with him. By removing their respective partners, the movie only clears the way for Gael and Hannah to associate romantically. Furthermore, the elevator operator informs them that a repairman cannot come before 8 am the following day (all of them are busy). It all proceeds as expected. That's why don't be shocked if I tell you that the elevator is fixed just when Gale and Hannah realize they want to be together.

The humans in Stuck with You prove to be useless in assisting Gale and Hannah. One of Gale's friends tumbles and passes out, while a kid cons them by making an empty promise. So the duty to save them falls on a cat. It's interesting how an animal, whose characteristics are distinct from humans, understands Gale and Hannah's trouble and rescues them. This quality of a stranger aiding another stranger can be found in the scenes between Gale and Hannah. These two help each other recognize their flaws and strengths and, in the process, become better and receive the motivation to come out of their inconveniences by making the right decisions (Gale sees his girlfriend is not suitable for him and so breaks up with her).

The real reason why Stuck with You works is that it has wonderful lead actors. Adams and Lellouche sell the cliché by infusing their characters with magnetism. You like watching them and their reactions as they respond to each other's story and their condition. Stuck with You runs for 59 minutes. It's sweet and short and doesn't overstay its welcome.

(B, C, AB, LLL, V, SS, NN, AA, D, M) Hints of a Biblical worldview that speaks of destiny, purpose and responsibility in story about conjoined twins who love each other and look out for one another, with Christian preacher seen on Hollywood Blvd. heard saying God hates the sin and loves the sinner (may have been meant as joke, but the Word is preached), but there’s one blasphemy in the movie; about 25 obscenities (including one “f” word), 12 light profanities, one blasphemy about God approving masturbation, eight veiled references to male and female genitals, and other vulgarities; action violence in bar fight, conjoined twins beat on each other, and boxing match between conjoined twins and another man; one brother has sex behind sheet while the other reads and wears headphones (the bed bounces and the girl is audibly enjoying herself), woman is seen in bed with a much younger man (played as joke), man innocently finds himself selected for a porn film, wanders onto the set, discovers his circumstances, and flees, references to masturbation (do it alone as god intended), and it is suggested that one man was masturbating and shook the bed “like a paint shaker” (treated as normal sexuality), and showgirls in bikinis perform lap dances (one man is visibly disgusted with the whole scene); upper male nudity, man in briefs, women in bikinis, Lots of female cleavage, several close up bikini fanny shots; casual drinking and one case of drunkenness; smoking; and, people mock “freaks” and man steals purse while drunk (as a joke).

GENRE: Comedy

More Detail:

STUCK ON YOU is the newest offering of the Farrelly Brothers (DUMB AND DUMBER, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, and ME MYSELF AND IRENE). Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear play Bob and Walt, respectively. They are Siamese twins – “conjoined twins” for the politically correct – and chefs who run their own popular restaurant in Martha’s Vineyard called “Quickie Burger.” They have choreographed a cooperative kitchen routine for filling orders in three minutes or less; otherwise, the meal is free.

The brothers considered an operation to separate them when they were much younger, but they share a liver. Bob has the most benefit of the liver’s function and, if separated, Walt only has a 50-50 chance of surviving. Bob has graciously declined surgical separation out of love for his brother and fear of losing him.

Walt is an actor in the local theatre. His latest play is “TRU” in which he portrays Truman Capote. During the performance, his brother Bob works hard just to stay out of the way. For the past three years, Bob has been exchanging email with the beautiful May (Wen Yann Smith) who lives in Los Angeles – they are in love.

Walt, high off of the success of his theatre season, decides that he wants to attempt to make it in Hollywood. As youngsters, the brothers promised to never hold each other back when one of them wants to do something special with their lives so Bob reluctantly obliges. Walt reminds Bob that May is in Los Angeles and that while Walt is attempting to launch his career, Bob can get to know May a lot better. Except Bob has not told May that he is attached to his brother.

In a case of being in the right place at the right time, Walt lands a role opposite Cher on a TV show. As he grows more famous, it gets tougher on Bob to share life with him. As Bob gets to know May face to face, he tries to keep up the charade that he and Walt are not joined at the hip. When May finally discovers the truth, she freaks out.

Walt, seeing how depressed Bob is from both having to tag along with him to the TV set and from losing his girlfriend, decides that it is time to have the risky surgery to separate the two of them. First, he’ll have to convince Bob that the time has truly come and that he is willing to risk death so that Bob can live his own life.

Can Siamese twins truly make it in Hollywood? Can May accept Bob for who he is – for who they are? Will Bob risk his brother’s life for his own dreams and submit to surgery?

The Farrelly Brothers have produced a sometimes touching story of sibling loyalty and love seasoned with slapstick comedy and bawdy humor. They took pains, while developing the movie, to make the twins the heroes and normal people in the story not the butt of the jokes, and the movie benefits greatly from this. Regrettably, the crude humor, crass talk of masturbation, and depicted fornication (no nudity), ruin any chances that this might appeal to a family audience. It’s rated “PG-13” but dangles at the edge of “R” territory.

SUMMARY: In STUCK ON YOU Siamese twin brothers have to renegotiate a lifetime of love, cooperation, and consideration for each other as they chase their dreams and discover romance. While more tender-hearted and less offensive than past movies by the Farrelly brothers, STUCK ON YOU still isn’t fitting faire for media-wise families.

'Daddio' Review: Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn Get Stuck in a Taxi to Nowhere

The Big Picture

  • Christy Hall’s risky feature debut locks audiences inside a yellow cab with suboptimal results.
  • Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn carry the entire film via conversation, which is a tall order.
  • Performance power cannot overcome the tangled themes in this psychosexual dissection of relationships, self-worth, and forbidden love.

Writer and director Christy Hall selects a challenging route for her feature debut Daddio . The film unfolds inside a New York City taxi cab, flipping between backseat closeups or dashboard wide angles. Money saved on production locations is spent on A-list actors, but too much relies on chatty banter between a duo of performers who shoulder the film's entire weight. It's a character study akin to HBO ’s Taxicab Confessions by way of Chicken Soup for the Soul , which loses steam halfway through transportation purgatory. Exchanges can be sweet as strangers speak bluntly about everything from ex-wives to panty vending machines, but also exhausting, idling through 100 minutes of softcore driver-passenger psychoanalysis.

A woman taking a cab ride from JFK engages in a conversation with the taxi driver about the important relationships in their lives.

What Is 'Daddio' About?

Dakota Johnson plays an experienced New Yorker who hails a yellow cab from JFK Airport to Manhattan. She's returning home from Oklahoma’s armpit after a family visit, later at night, with only a drunken horndog of a lover blowing up her phone in search of nudes. Her driver, Clark ( Sean Penn ), strikes up a conversation early in their travels, complimenting his unnamed passenger on not obsessively checking her smartphone (right before another surge of lewd texts and “dick pics”). This instigates a dialogue between people with time to kill and almost zero chance of ever meeting again , which becomes more candid as the odometer tallies passing miles. Clark lends an ear to the woman's problems, but what are his ultimate intentions?

At first, Hall doesn't define any dominant tone for Daddio . Clark's line of questioning grows more intimate and borderline invasive rather quickly; Penn's gravely New Yawk accent could pass as flirtatiously slick or manipulatively skeevy. We're unsure if Johnson's youthful blondie is in danger, but Daddio never wants to be Collateral or Spree . Before long, Johnson and Penn forge a chummy rapport that erases any looming speculations. Clark abides by caricatures of cabbies doling sage wisdom (with Big Apple charms), while Johnson's rider flings the door open to her current issues. Hall fantasizes about a world where humans communicate freely, without text bubbles, but the situation feels synthetically uncertain even in this verbal utopia.

Johnson and Penn are glued to interior upholstery, locked in a competition to one-up personal shitstorms, while cinematographer Phedon Papamichael abuses split diopter windows. Against these restrictions, there's a sincerity to their no-holds-barred discussions . Something is endearing about the catharsis each finds confessing painful truths to veritable nobodies, but also fabricated about their whimsical cab ride filled with safe existential soul-searching. Penn's aged playboy is a fountain of gender clichés that Johnson's listener rolls with both humorously and combatively, serving advice like a tipsy divorced uncle on Thanksgiving. Clark doesn't censor his takes on cheaters and womanizers, nor does Johnson's "Girlie" fear judgment. Daddio can be refreshingly honest in spurts — until conceptual allure fades.

'Daddio' Doesn't Understand Dashcam Filmmaking

Unfortunately, Hall's screenplay translates into a rather pedestrian take on forbidden romances that blabs itself in circles . Daddio stretches far too long for its monotonous structure, unlike a title like H4Z4RD or Dash that understands dashcam filmmaking grows staler than the air in an unwashed rideshare vehicle without adrenaline jumpstarts. As Johnson's patron pulls back the curtain on her taboo connection to Mr. "Show Me Your Pink" (that phrasing makes my skin crawl), Clark's advice comes across as sterile. There's supposed to be a generational comparison between Clark the Boomer philanderer and Johnson's starry-eyed sidepiece, but words address conflicts with blasé enthusiasm. Hall writes from a softball tone that hardly harshens or provokes, diminishing the impactfulness of emotionally charged anecdotes with meandering meanings.

Daddio is a repetitive and reductive experiment in dialogue-driven storytelling. Visual accents are standard New York City highways and skylines, which don't add much beyond the stench of hot dog vendors should Clark roll down his window. Johnson and Penn aren't the problem here; choice conversations uplift what's otherwise AM radio talk show material. It's never incendiary, enigmatic, or challenging enough to justify sticking audiences shotgun as randos blither like long-lost companions. What's initially suggested hardly generates suspense, then the film tells us not to worry, and perpetual mobility becomes even more uninspired. Worse still, its thematic stances cross wires as actors have no choice but to continue chewing through the same dilemmas. The wheels keep turning, but Daddio feels like it goes nowhere .

Daddio Film Poster

Daddio is a lockbox drama that quickly runs out of fuel as its leads try to talk their way through a host of existential crises.

  • Sean Penn nails the "chatty cabbie" personality.
  • Dakota Johnson can be charming from the back seat.
  • There?s intrigue behind Hall's idea.
  • The tone grows flatter as the wheels keep spinning.
  • The characters talk in platitudes, which is unfortunate for a film that only speaks.
  • At best, it's a 70-minute concept stretched to 100 minutes.

Daddio comes to theaters in the U.S. starting June 28. Click below for showtimes near you.
