Was ist ein entwicklungsingenieur.

Entwicklungsingenieure sind Problemlöser. Im internationalen Umfeld auch Development Engineer genannt, optimieren sie bestehende Produkte und technische Verfahren, entwickeln sie weiter und konzipieren und gestalten neue. Ansatzpunkte für die Optimierung sind oft die von der Geschäftsführung vorgegebenen Ziele in den Bereichen Prozessführung, Ressourcenverbrauch, Durchlaufzeit, Qualität und Kosten. Ausgangspunkt für die Weiterentwicklung bestehender oder die Generierung neuer Produkte und Prozesse sind insbesondere von Kunden geäußerte Wünsche und Anforderungen an das Angebotsportfolio oder Marktbeobachtungen.

Hier spielen der technische Fortschritt und die sich ändernden gesellschaftlichen, politischen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen mit hinein. Die Digitalisierung und die Globalisierung gehören zu den Treibern dieses Wandels. Sichtbar wird dieser zum Beispiel an der zunehmenden Nutzung moderner Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) im Privat- und im Berufsleben. In Industrie, Gewerbe und Handel ist der Prozess unter den Schlagwörtern „Industrie 4.0“ und (Industrial) Internet of Things ((I)IoT) bekannt. Unternehmen jeder Branche sind gezwungen, sich an die sich teilweise radikal ändernden Märkte anzupassen. Entwicklungsingenieure sind daher in nahezu jedem größeren Unternehmen gefragte Experten, um diese digitale Transformation auf Produkt- und Prozessebene zu begleiten und die sich daraus ergebenden Chancen zu erkennen und zu nutzen.

Besonders stark vertreten sind Entwicklungsingenieure in der Automobilbranche mit ihren Zulieferern, im Maschinen- und Anlagenbau und in der Elektroindustrie. Die Spanne reicht hier von der Fahrzeug-, Automatisierungs- und Fertigungstechnik über die Haustechnik bis hin zu Haushalts- und Kommunikationsgeräten oder Freizeitelektronik. Aber auch Branchen von der Abwassertechnik über die Papierindustrie bis zur Zweiradtechnik sind auf die wertvolle Hilfe von Entwicklungsingenieuren angewiesen.

Grundvoraussetzungen für die Arbeit als Entwicklungsingenieur sind ein fundiertes Verständnis für technische Zusammenhänge und Kreativität. Ergänzt wird diese Basis durch kaufmännisches Denken, hohe Kundenorientierung, den Blick für Design, Affinität zu Marketingaspekten sowie Resilienz und Fremdsprachenkenntnisse . 

Welche Aufgaben hat ein Entwicklungsingenieur?

Zu den Kernaufgaben eines Entwicklungsingenieurs gehört das Kreieren von innovativen und marktgerechten technischen Lösungen bei möglichst schonendem Einsatz von Ressourcen (Zeit, Geld, Personal, Material, Energie). Die verschiedenen Lösungsansätze hat er im Rahmen einer Machbarkeitsstudie auf ihre Realisierbarkeit und die Auswirkungen während des Produktlebenszyklus hin zu prüfen. Als Aspekte berücksichtigt werden sollten dabei nicht nur die Kosten der Produktion und die Komplexität der Fertigung, sondern zum Beispiel auch die Benutzer- oder Bedienerfreundlichkeit des Produkts, die Reparaturmöglichkeiten, die Recyclingfähigkeit und die Nachhaltigkeit.

Konkret sammelt der Entwicklungsingenieur neue Ideen, setzt diese zunächst in Skizzen und Entwürfen, dann mithilfe von Software wie CAD- (Computer Aided Design-)Systemen auch in 3-D-Modellen und schließlich in Prototypen um. Er diskutiert Lösungsvorschläge intern mit den Abteilungen Forschung und Entwicklung sowie Produktion und Marketing, um die Akzeptanz, die Markttauglichkeit und -relevanz sowie die Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten zu klären. Extern verhandelt er mit den Kunden, um deren Anforderungen und Wünsche kennenzulernen und um die vorgestellte Lösung mit den Kundenbedürfnissen abzugleichen.

In der Grundlagenentwicklung hat der Entwicklungsingenieur die Aufgabe, wissenschaftliche und technische Neuerungen zu verfolgen. Diese muss er analysieren und auf wirtschaftlich umsetzbare Anwendungen und Möglichkeiten der Verwertung hin überprüfen. Damit sind Entwicklungsingenieure auch Treiber bei der Verbreitung neuer Technologien.

Die Aufgaben eines Entwicklungsingenieurs umfassen beispielsweise:

  • Optimieren von bestehenden Produkten und Prozessen;
  • Identifikation, Analyse und Beurteilung von Trends;
  • Entwickeln von neuen Produkten und technischen Verfahren;
  • Arbeiten mit Software wie CAD-Systemen oder MATLAB;
  • Erstellen von Skizzen, Zeichnungen, Modellen und Prototypen;
  • Test von Prototypen und Auswertung der Ergebnisse;
  • Meetings und Präsentationen zur Vorstellung der Ergebnisse intern und extern;
  • Abstimmung des Produkts mit den (Kunden-/Markt-/Unternehmens-)Anforderungen;
  • Führung von Mitarbeitern;
  • Durchführung administrativer Prozesse.

Entwicklungsingenieure arbeiten meist im Team in einer Entwicklungs- oder auch Forschungs- und Entwicklungs-Abteilung (F&E bzw. R&D, Research and Development). Sie sollten dabei eng mit der Produktion und dem Marketing zusammenarbeiten, um einerseits Herausforderungen bei der Serienfertigung und andererseits Möglichkeiten der Bewerbung des Produkts – möglichst anhand eines Alleinstellungsmerkmals (UPS, Unique Selling Proposition) – zu erkennen. Bei seiner kreativen Arbeit muss sich der Entwicklungsingenieur also häufig mit Fachleuten seines Arbeitsgebiets austauschen, aber auch mit fachfremden Dritten, beispielsweise den Entscheidern bei Auftraggebern. Kundengespräche und Präsentationen gehören also neben der technischen Expertise, die er als Ingenieur in einem Hochschulstudium erworben hat, zum Grundgerüst der Arbeit .

Welche Kompetenzen braucht ein Entwicklungsingenieur?

Entwicklungstätigkeiten sind anspruchsvoll: Gefragt sind ein hohes technisches Verständnis, gepaart mit Kenntnissen aus den Materialwissenschaften und der Umform- sowie der Fügetechnik. Dazu kommen analytisches Denken zur Problemerkennung sowie Kreativität beim Finden von Ideen und Lösungsansätzen, um die Anforderungen und Bedürfnisse der (internen oder externen) Kunden zeitnah bzw. termingerecht bestmöglich umzusetzen. Berücksichtigen muss er bei seiner Arbeit außerdem nicht nur wirtschaftliche Zielvorgaben, sondern auch die Einhaltung rechtlicher Rahmenbedingungen und technischer Standards und Normen. Zudem darf er Nachhaltigkeits- und Umweltschutzaspekte nicht aus dem Blick verlieren.

Stichpunktartig lassen sich die Kompetenzen, die von einem Entwicklungsingenieur erwartet werden, so zusammenfassen:

  • hoher technischer Sachverstand;
  • Kenntnis der relevanten Normen, Technischen Regeln und gesetzlichen Vorgaben;
  • analytisches Denken, um komplexe Projekte und auftretende Probleme in der Gesamtheit erfassen zu können;
  • Resilienz, um auch unter Belastung und Zeitdruck (generell durch immer kürzere Entwicklungszyklen / time-to-market, im Einzelfall durch Terminvorgaben) möglichst fehlerfrei zu arbeiten;
  • Kreativität und Problemlösungskompetenz;
  • betriebswirtschaftliches Denken, um bezahlbare Lösungen zu entwickeln;
  • unternehmerisches Denken, um die Belange der Produktion (bei Serienfertigung) und des Marketings zu berücksichtigen;
  • Englisch- (bzw. Fremdsprachen-)kenntnisse, insbesondere bei international agierenden Unternehmen;
  • Kundenorientierung;
  • Präsentationstechniken.

Da die Entwickler meist im Team arbeiten und auch Kundenkontakt haben, sind Teamfähigkeit und Zuverlässigkeit, Offenheit und Empathie weitere Eigenschaften, auf die Arbeitgeber Wert legen .

Wie wird man Entwicklungsingenieur?

Voraussetzung für die Arbeit als Entwicklungsingenieur ist das Studium einer Ingenieurdisziplin an einer Fachhochschule (FH) oder einer (Technischen) Universität. Den klassischen Einstieg bieten die Studiengänge Maschinenbau, Anlagenbau und Elektrotechnik. Aber auch Absolventen der Bereiche Fahrzeugbau, Verfahrenstechnik, Mechatronik, Mess- und Regeltechnik, Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik oder Werkstofftechnik werden gesucht. Als weiterer Bereich etabliert sich zunehmend die Medizintechnik.

  • Bachelor-Studium: In Deutschland werden an fast jeder Universität und Fachhochschule Ingenieurstudiengänge angeboten, insgesamt mehr als 100. In der Regel wird die Fachhochschulreife für ein FH-Studium oder das Abitur für ein Universitätsstudium vorausgesetzt. Häufig wird zudem der Nachweis über ein abgelegtes Vorpraktikum verlangt. Einige Studiengänge sind zulassungsbeschränkt. Die Studiendauer beträgt 6 – 7 Semester, das letzte Semester ist dabei das an FHs meist obligatorische Praxissemester.
  • Duales Studium: Das Studium einer Ingenieurdisziplin ist verbunden mit einer anerkannten (drei- oder dreieinhalbjährigen) Berufsausbildung in einem Unternehmen. Praxis- und Theoriephasen, also die Arbeit im Ausbildungsbetrieb und das Studium an der FH, wechseln sich in der Regel alle drei Monate ab. Studierende erhalten eine Ausbildungsvergütung, anfallende Studiengebühren übernimmt der Arbeitgeber. Abschluss ist neben dem Gesellenbrief im Ausbildungsberuf ein Bachelor in dem studierten Fach. Üblicherweise müssen sich dual Studierende verpflichten, nach ihrem Abschluss mehrere Jahre im ausbildenden (und finanzierenden) Unternehmen tätig zu sein.
  • Master-Studium: Neben dem weiten Spektrum an Ingenieurdisziplinen werden hier auch Studiengänge speziell für angehende Entwicklungsingenieure angeboten, etwa „Design and Development in Automotive and Mechanical Engineering“ oder „Product Development and Manufacturing“. Der Abschluss wird nach insgesamt ca. 11 Semestern erreicht – Bachelor-Studium eingerechnet.
  • Diplom-Studium: Da der deutsche Diplom-Ingenieur weltweit einen sehr guten Ruf genießt, wird der Diplom-Studiengang in Ingenieurwissenschaften trotz der Umstellung auf die Abschlüsse Bachelor und Master von vielen Hochschulen (weiter) angeboten. Die Studiendauer ist hier mit dem Studium bis zum Masterabschluss vergleichbar.

Einige Unternehmen bieten Hochschulabsolventen Trainee-Programme an, damit sie erste Praxiserfahrung im Unternehmen sammeln können. Trainees lernen dabei den Betrieb und die spezifischen Arbeiten kennen. Zudem können beide Seiten so prüfen, ob sie „zueinanderpassen“ . 

Wie viel verdient man als Entwicklungsingenieur?

Deutschlandweit liegt das Durchschnittsgehalt eines Entwicklungsingenieurs bei ca. 5.000 Euro brutto im Monat, also rund 60.000 Euro im Jahr. Die Gehaltsspanne reicht dabei von gut 3.900 Euro bis rund 5.500 Euro Monatsbrutto, also von knapp 48.000 Euro bis etwa 66.000 Euro Jahresbrutto.

Das Brutto- Einstiegsgehalt als Junior-Entwicklungsingenieur mit Bachelor -Abschluss liegt durchschnittlich bei 3.900 Euro im Monat bzw. 47.000 Euro im Jahr. Ein Master -Abschluss wird zunächst mit durchschnittlich 4.300 Euro brutto im Monat vergütet, also 52.000 Euro brutto im Jahr. Wer promoviert hat, bezieht als Dr.-Ing. im bundesweiten Schnitt 5.250 Euro monatlich oder 63.000 Euro jährlich als Bruttoentgelt. Da allerdings viele Bachelor und Master als Trainees ins Berufsleben starten, müssen sie zunächst ein geringeres Einkommen in Kauf nehmen. Bachelor werden dabei mit Brutto-Beträgen zwischen 3.250 Euro und 3.800 Euro im Monat, also mit rund 39.000 Euro bis 45.500 Euro, entlohnt, Master erhalten in der Regel im Jahr rund 4.500 Euro brutto mehr.

Erfahrene Kräfte mit längerer Berufs- und Projekterfahrung und Personalverantwortung, etwa als Team- oder Projektleiter, erreichen ein monatliches Brutto von 7.500 Euro und mehr, also über 90.000 Euro brutto im Jahr. Dazu kommen dann üblicherweise noch Zusatzentgelte wie Gewinnbeteiligungen in Höhe von durchschnittlich rund 3.000 Euro brutto – bei einer Spanne zwischen 1.000 Euro und 7.000 Euro.

Wie in anderen Berufen auch hängt das monatliche Einkommen eines Entwicklungsingenieurs von mehreren Faktoren ab. Dazu gehören:

  • die Branche;
  • die Unternehmensgröße;
  • der Unternehmensstandort;
  • die Berufserfahrung;
  • Zusatzfähigkeiten.

Faktor Branche

Die durchschnittlichen Jahresbruttogehälter für Entwicklungsingenieure liegen in den meisten Branchen auf hohem, nahezu vergleichbarem Niveau. Überdurchschnittlich gut zahlen Unternehmen in den Sparten Medizin/Life Science/Pharma und Chemie, gefolgt von der Energiewirtschaft und dem Bereich Elektrotechnik/Feinmechanik/Optik. Automobilindustrie, Luft- und Raumfahrt, IKT folgen auf den Rängen und liegen noch vor dem Maschinen- und Anlagenbau. In den Bereichen Konsumgüter, Metall und Bau sind die Einkommen vergleichsweise niedrig – und auf dem letzten Platz landet die Logistikbranche.

Da Ingenieur- und Planungsbüros auf Fremdaufträge angewiesen sind, sind sie stärker konjunkturabhängig als andere Arbeitgeber – und zudem oft in ihrer Kapazität beschränkt. Hier liegt das durchschnittliche Jahres-Brutto noch unter der Baubranche – aber über der Logistik.

Faktor Unternehmensgröße

Je größer das Unternehmen, desto höher ist in der Regel auch dessen Finanzkraft und desto größer die Produktvielfalt. Damit wird die Entwicklung vielschichtiger und wichtiger. In Großunternehmen werden daher meist eigene Entwicklungs- oder F&E-Abteilungen eingerichtet, in denen hochspezialisierte Entwicklungsingenieure arbeiten. Mit der Unternehmensgröße steigt daher oft auch das monatliche Brutto-Durchschnittsgehalt des Entwicklungsingenieurs:

  • < 100 Mitarbeiter: ca. 4.500 €
  • 101 – 1.000 Mitarbeiter: ca. 5.000 €
  • 1001 – 20.000 Mitarbeiter: ca. 5.600 €
  • > 20.000 Mitarbeiter: ca. 6.400 €

Faktor Unternehmensstandort

Der Sitz des Unternehmens hat Auswirkungen auf die Höhe der Vergütung. Mit hinein spielen Standortfaktoren wie die Infrastrukturanbindung, die unterschiedliche Wirtschaftskraft oder die Exportorientierung. Weitere Aspekte sind regionale Unterschiede der Lebenshaltungskosten oder die Attraktivität des Umlands. Erkennbar ist die Tendenz, im Süden der Republik höhere Gehälter zu zahlen als im Norden und im Westen höhere als im Osten.

So ist die Bezahlung in den Flächenländern Baden-Württemberg und Hessen mit durchschnittlich ca. 5.500 Euro Monatsbrutto die Spitze der Gehaltsskala, vor Bayern mit ca. 5.350 Euro. Nordrhein-Westfalen mit ca. 5.150 Euro und Rheinland-Pfalz mit gut 5.000 Euro brutto im Monat folgen mit etwas Abstand. Vom Saarland mit knapp 4.900 Euro brutto monatlich nimmt das Brutto-Monatsentgelt über Niedersachsen mit etwa 4.700 Euro und Schleswig-Holstein mit gut 4.500 Euro weiter ab. In Thüringen und Sachsen wird mit gut 4.100 Euro zumindest noch mehr verdient als in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, wo das durchschnittliche Monatsbrutto unter 4.000 Euro liegt.

Faktor Berufserfahrung

Mit wachsender Erfahrung und in der Regel damit steigendem Alter steigt auch der monatliche Brutto-Verdienst.

Als Durchschnittswerte für Entwicklungsingenieure in Deutschland können gelten:

  • Berufsanfänger: ca. 4.300 €
  • rund 5 Jahre Berufserfahrung: ca. 5.150 €
  • rund 10 Jahre Berufserfahrung: ca. 6.000 €
  • mehr als 10 Jahre Berufserfahrung: ca. 7.100 €

Auch hier sind die Schwankungsbreiten aufgrund Branche, Unternehmensgröße und -standort, internationaler Ausrichtung sowie aufgrund unterschiedlicher Ausbildung und Zusatzqualifikationen erheblich. Dazu kommt noch die deutliche Lücke in der Entlohnung zwischen den (weitaus überwiegenden) männlichen und (dem geringen Anteil an) weiblichen Personen, der „Gender Gap“.

Faktor Zusatzfähigkeiten

Das Vorhandensein oder der Erwerb von Zusatzqualifikationen gehören zu den Faktoren, die sich in höheren Gehältern niederschlagen. Fachliche Expertise in „Hard Skills“ wie Design Thinking oder CAD, Materialwissenschaften und Umformtechnik, Informatik und Mechatronik, aber auch Design zahlt sich aus. Kenntnisse in Betriebswirtschaft und Fremdsprachen sowie der Nachweis von „Soft Skills“ wie Kommunikations- und Führungstechniken werden honoriert. Wer Ausbildungs-, Schulungs- und Lehrtätigkeiten übernimmt, ob innerbetrieblich oder an z. B. Berufsschulen, kann ebenfalls mit einem höheren Verdienst rechnen.

Weiterbildung für Entwicklungsingenieure

Um den Anforderungen des Arbeitsalltags und der rasch voranschreitenden Entwicklung bei technologischen Verfahren, in den Materialwissenschaften oder der Digital- und Softwaretechnik gerecht zu werden, müssen Entwicklungsingenieure ihr Fachwissen und ihre Marktkenntnis aktuell halten und erweitern. Dazu gehören Fortbildungen, um neue Entwicklungen, Technologien und Softwarelösungen kennenzulernen oder auch Führungsaufgaben wahrnehmen zu können. Außerdem sind kaufmännische Weiterbildungen sinnvoll, um das betriebswirtschaftliche Denken zu fördern. Aber auch Schulungen zur Stärkung der Soft Skills, also Kreativität, Kommunikations - und Präsentationsfähigkeit, Selbstmotivation, Fremdsprachen, sind angesagt.

Mit diesen Zusatzqualifikationen können sich Entwicklungsingenieure entweder auf bestimmte Branchen oder Produkte bzw. Anlagen spezialisieren oder auch für höhere Positionen qualifizieren. Der Aufstieg zum Leiter Entwicklung oder der Wechsel in die Bereiche Geschäftsführung oder Consulting sind möglich – und sehr lukrativ.

Weiterbildungen in Form von Lehrgängen und Seminaren werden von verschiedensten Institutionen angeboten, von Vereinen bis hin zu privaten Hochschulen. Seminare und Schulungen erfolgen meist berufsbegleitend.

South Carolina State University

SC State receives transformative $8 million state allocation for STEM research and SRNL workforce development

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University has been allocated $8 million in state funding that will take education and research in the College of Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Transportation (STEM-T College) to a new level.

Four years in the making, the Research Partnerships and Workforce Training Programs are a partnership between SC State, the University of South Carolina (USC) and Clemson University in support of the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and the Battelle Savannah River Alliance (BSRA).

The state has allocated an initial $40 million proviso, of which $8 million comes to SC State, with the promise of significantly more funding as objectives are met.

“SC State already enjoys productive and mutually beneficial relationships with SRNL and BSRA,” SC State President Alexander Conyers said. “These funds will strengthen those connections and transform our STEM-T College into an even greater asset for the people of South Carolina and our students.

“I thank Gov. Henry McMaster and the General Assembly for supporting this visionary milestone in the development of SC State and our partners in this critical endeavor,” Conyers said.

The Research Partnerships and Workforce Training Programs’ overall objective is to provide a talent pipeline for SRNL and coursework to support professional development for the site’s existing workforce.

SC State is the only institution in South Carolina and the nation’s only HBCU (historically Black college or university) offering a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering , hence its importance to SRNL. SC State also manages the Savannah River Environmental Sciences Field Station , which provides hands-on, field-oriented experiences for students.

From SC State’s perspective, the initial $8 million in state funding for the Research Partnerships and Workforce Training Programs is a game-changer for both research initiatives and the marketability of its graduates in STEM fields.

“This investment underscores the state's commitment to preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving STEM world,” said Dr. Frederick Evans, SC State provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Expanding access to STEM education empowers our youth to innovate, create, and drive our state's future economic success.

“The financial support will also position our students to engage in more strategic research within the STEM field and strengthen our alliances with business and industry, which will lead to new curricula to support workforce development in the State of South Carolina,” Evans said.

According to Elbert R. Malone, SC State associate provost for research and sponsored programs, SC State’s share of the proviso will support:

  • The employment of 12 new research faculty in such areas as environmental engineering; the basic sciences of biology; chemistry and radiochemistry; health physics; nuclear engineering; cybersecurity and networking. Scholarships and internships for undergraduate students.
  • Three Centers of Excellence -- The Center for Energy and Environmental Solutions; the Center for Nuclear Criticality, Radiochemistry and Spectroscopy; and the Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education . Placing faculty jointly appointed at SRNL in mission-relevant areas.
  • Establishing two pre-college institutes – the Summer Bridge Program for young students and the Summer Science Institute for teachers.
  • STEM lab enhancements including equipment and modifications to conduct cutting-edge research and provide high-quality educational experience to STEM students. In addition, SC State is using other funding sources to renovate labs in Hodge Hall for the program.  

“These funds will be transformational to the STEM-T College because it will provide an opportunity to build a robust research infrastructure that will allow the university to compete in the research arena on national and international levels, particularly as we move toward Research II status,” Malone said.

Conyers has set a goal for SC State to reach Research II (R2) status, which would position the university to compete for more federal and corporate funding for research-driven initiatives.

“The $8 Million allocation is a huge blessing to the university and the STEM-T College,” said Dr. Stanley Ihekweazu, the college’s dean. “Through this appropriation, we hope to be able to do a number of things including but not limited to hiring research scientists to conduct research especially as we quicken our steps into R2 status, offering scholarships to students, and acquiring needed equipment.

“We are truly excited and hope to hope to move the university and the STEM-T College forward,” he said.

The universities outlined a five-year plan, and the initial grant will support the efforts for the first two years, after which the additional funding would kick in.

Of each new faculty member’s time, 75% will be devoted to research with the remaining 25% dedicated to instruction. The faculty members eventually would be responsible for bringing in their own research funding, keeping the imitative alive after the grant period expires.

BSRA brings world-class expertise in laboratory management, nuclear operations, national security, and scientific research to Savannah River National Laboratory. Along with SC State, USC and Clemson, the BSRA’s team includes Battelle, an Ohio-based private nonprofit applied science and technology development company, plus two other universities with expertise in a wide range of areas relevant to SNRL: Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.
