City life is often romanticized. Books, television and movies have presented it as bursting from the seams with adventure, culture and a wealth of possibilities. Making it big in the big city has been a mantra for young people for decades, and not without good reason. But realistically, not everyone is going to enjoy the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. How do you decide whether you should be living in a big city?

It’s time to step back and take a careful look at your options. Like everything else, living in the city has advantages and disadvantages. Some are logistical, like expenses and housing. Others are deeply personal — family connections, job opportunities, sports teams, the list goes on.

Advantages of Living in the City

Major metro areas are popular among millennials for a reason. Many of them have their heart set on city living after graduation, and it’s not hard to see why. When you’re ready to enter adulthood headfirst, here are a few advantages to living in a big city:

1. Entertainment Options

You never have a shortage of things to see and do when you move to a major metro area. Regardless of your preferences, you’ll find places that appeal to your interests, filled with like-minded people who share them. Whether you’re into loud clubs or quiet bookstores, you’ll find both in abundance.

While suburban and rural areas have their own social and cultural amenities, they aren’t on the same scale you’ll come across in the city. You’re also far more likely to see your favorite musical artists in major metros, as they have less incentive to visit small towns. If you’re looking for entertainment and cultural enrichment, cities are often ideal.

Furthermore, larger cities hold more communities and clubs that can help you connect with fellow residents. If you’re trying to make friends, it’s only a matter of narrowing down your interests and getting involved in activities full of other passionate people. In a small town, it’s far more unlikely you’ll be able to connect with friends who share a love for niche hobbies and events.

2. Career Opportunities

One of the biggest reasons graduates move to cities is career advancement. You’ll find more opportunities in the city, and a greater variety of opportunities as well. Whatever you studied, you’re likely to find a position where your education is relevant. In 2023, cities in the Sunbelt region such as Nashville and Austin have the fastest-growing job markets.

Established urban centers like LA and NYC are still viable, but other cities are becoming more attractive for young entrepreneurs. Job growth in the biggest cities has been slower than usual because the COVID-19 pandemic hit them the hardest. However, there still remains a combination of educational, economic and environmental factors that make big cities the best places to find new employment.

Furthermore, living in a big city is the only way for some people to advance their careers. For example, technology-oriented roles are packed into urban centers like San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Major business and financial centers tend to set up shop here, too. These career paths require young professionals to relocate to cities where more job positions can be found.

3. Public Transportation

The costs of owning a car can add up quickly. You have to account for car payments, insurance, registration fees and other expenses. When you work an entry-level position at a company early in your career, you can’t always justify that kind of investment. Even if you find a reasonable used car, one major repair can throw off your saving goals for the month.

Fortunately, you have a range of options for public transportation when you live in a major metro area. The subway provides a relatively fast, convenient way to get from place to place, avoiding traffic. Plus, you might be able to focus on a book rather than keeping your eyes on the road — as long as the noise isn’t too distracting.

Of course, not every American city is well-equipped for public transportation. If you’re wondering whether your favorite hotspot has a reliable system, check out its rankings . If buses and subways are well-organized and frequently used, then it’s a safe bet to ditch your car before you move.

Disadvantages of Living in the City

While metro areas have their appeal, you’ll find the issue isn’t as one-sided as some might think. Urban living is great, with entertainment options, career opportunities and public transportation, but just like everything else, it has its downsides. Between traffic, crowding and higher expenses, life in a big city might just not be for you. What should you know before you start packing your things to move?

1. Higher Cost of Living

The cost of living is higher in the city than in suburban or rural areas. While there may be more job opportunities in the city, the cost of rent, food and entertainment will eliminate much of your monthly earnings. It’s typically cheaper to live in the suburbs rather than a downtown apartment. However, renting vs buying is a huge decision to make. If you’re spending more income on housing year-to-year, then you might have to put off any plans for property while living in the big city.

As a general rule, the biggest cities have the highest costs of living in the United States, like Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Denver and others. This also means you’re more likely to be sharing life with a roommate in order to pay a reasonable rent. It’s increasingly difficult to find an affordable apartment in the biggest cities. If you’re looking to live alone, then you may want to seriously rethink moving to the city.

More than this, you have other life expenses you need to consider when making the move to a major metro area. Dining, groceries and entertainment are usually more expensive in the city, and you might find yourself spending more than you’d like for a night out. While you have more options — an attractive advantage of city living — these options come at a price that some people would rather not pay.

2. Less Personal Space

If you value having lots of personal space, cities might not seem so appealing. The close quarters of subway cars and sidewalks aren’t for everyone, and it’s a significant change from life in a small town. When you weigh your options, consider whether you can handle walking among massive crowds of people or living in a small studio apartment.

You might not feel that way at all, and this “disadvantage” wouldn’t even occur to you if it weren’t on this list. On the other hand, the thought of people crowding you whenever you step out your front door could make you uncomfortable. If this is the case, you should reconsider making the move to a city. You might be happier in a quiet environment, where loud neighbors are less of a potential nuisance.

3. Large Population

The large population of major metro areas can create other unforeseen challenges in your daily life. You’ll find it far more difficult to find a parking space if you drive, and once you arrive at your destination, you’re still not in the clear. You might have to push through a crowd, wait longer for a table at restaurants or linger in a line.

Traffic is another important consideration. Country living often means empty roads and direct routes to the grocery store. While living in a big city, you’ll either be taking public transportation or careening down a highway in rush hour to pick up a few necessities. More people can mean more excitement, but this level of energy can be exhausting when you’re on the road.

It’s worth noting that populations in large urban areas saw a substantial decrease during the pandemic, but this decline has slowed or reversed in most cases. Big cities are still packed with people and will continue to grow. Something which shouldn’t challenge you in a small town could extend into an hour-long ordeal. As we’ve stated, big city living is convenient in many ways and inconvenient in others.

4. Fast-Paced Environment

Living life on the fast track can be thrilling. But it’s also more likely to lead to burnout. Culture depends on the city’s regional character, of course, but for the most part, city dwellers have a lot more on their plate. Detroit and Cleveland are the most stressed out cities in the US, and the gloomy yet fast-paced environment has a lot to do with it.

Consider whether you feel up to longer work hours, longer bus rides and an urge to hustle just to stay ahead. In a small town, it’s less common to compete for jobs with late-night expectations, and commutes are often a 10-minute drive. There’s nothing wrong with being sensitive to stress, and the magic of living in a big city will be lost on you if you end up frazzled by your day-to-day life.

Should You Be Living in a Big City?

Living in a big city isn’t all about glitz and glam. It’s an experience some people couldn’t imagine living without, but it repels others. Often, it’s a subject that people in your life will have strong opinions about, and it can be hard to cut through the noise.

In the end, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to your lifestyle. If living in the city has advantages you’re drawn to, then it’s worth overcoming some of the obstacles you might be dealing with.

And if suburban or rural life provides the stability and peace of mind you crave, then there’s nothing wrong with avoiding the crowds. Living in a big city has pluses and minuses, and hopefully we’ve helped you figure out which approach works best for you.

Living In A Big City Essay: Lifestyle Essay

There was once a time when people preferred the small town living existence due to its inherent slow paced lifestyle and laid back, relaxing surroundings. Neighbors knew each other on a first name and last name basis and shared lazy Sunday afternoons at church or town sponsored fairs and socials. That kind of lifestyle probably still exists in some remote towns of the country. Or maybe it just exists in those Hollywood movies like Sweet Home Alabama. The reality of the situation is that the slow paced lifestyle that once described American living has given way to big city living. Being a person who exists in the 21st century, I am more comfortable with big city living for more reasons than just one.

First of all, big city living offers its residents an exciting lifestyle. Each day is an adventure as the city continuously offers something new to discover. There is always a new place opening up where people are encouraged to be different and try something new. The city offers its inhabitants a the opportunity to dive head on into the world of the future. City living is best lived in by people whose imagination knows no boundaries and wants to soar above the city lights that give glimmer to an otherwise dark night. I believe that is the reason why most small town people dream of eventually living in the big city. The surprises that big city living offers is simply too vast to quantify.

For me, big city living adventure began the day I learned to differentiate sounds. Living here is more than an adventure, it is an educational and social learning experience. There is no better place to learn about life than the city. Where everyone seems to be living in a glass menagerie and we can freely observe people and their attitudes in a habitat that they create for themselves. It may not be as open and nature bound as town living, but that is the beauty of city living. One learns by mingling with their friends and allowing strangers into their lives on a need to know basis.

Education-wise, the city offers an educational system that cannot be equaled in the small towns. All aspects of city living simply screams education. From the advertising billboards on the side of the bus to the hot dog cart vendor, there is always something new to learn. City dwellers have more stories with moral lessons to turn than any school teacher can teach.

Others say that there is a superficiality to city living because of the fast paced lifestyle led by the people. It seems like nobody really knows anything about their neighbors because they just live in the same building and nothing more. The truth of the matter is that city dwellers do not need all that time for face to face socialization because city living is designed to actually allow a person to have a social life on a different level. Like I explained earlier, city dwellers have a more adventurous spirit.

Such is the adventurous spirit that even the socialization aspect of our lives are dealt with in the same manner. While small towns would probably rely on Friday night socials or bingo nights, we rely on the internet, text messaging, and blogging to stay in touch with people and make friends. These friendships are not superficial at all because city dwellers tend to create an extended family among strangers due to the distance between them and relatives.

I cannot imagine myself moving out of the city because city living has a different kind of energy that keeps a person pumped up and ready for action. In order to live and survive in the city, one must possess quick with and abilities. Let me put it this way, city living makes one feel alive. Nothing can beat waking up late in the morning and then rushing out the door to catch the bus in order to not miss the first appointment of the day.

Big city living is the trend of the future. Urbanization has taken over the country as more and more states become reliant on industries for their income. The slow paced lifestyle of the past is only a hindrance to the future of any community. the importance of urbanization can be seen in every aspect of small town living that is now becoming a thing of the past. Even the farmers now rely heavily on technology to keep their farms running more efficiently and productively. Something they learned from following the big city models of running a production output oriented business.

More importantly, the city if where everything of importance is coming to the fore. Advances in the field of medicine are concentrated within the city because of the experimental advantages. While small town people are known for their good health, city dwellers are known for the amazing anti-bodies that our bodies contain due to certain unknown toxins that surround us. We are actually a lot healthier than the small town dwellers because our bodies are constantly fighting off airborne viral infections and thereby developing the necessary anti-bodies. My mother grew up in a small town. She told me that the first time she moved to the city, she was constantly fighting off infections just to be able to make it to work. So she was amazed when I was born and was practically never sick since childhood save for the occasional cold.

City living requires a person to learn how to handle himself in various, unexpected situations. There is nothing rudimentary about city living because of the way city life is designed to constantly evolve over time. If you are a person who believes that man was meant to constantly evolve and learn new things, then city living is meant for you. After all, cities seem to have a life of its own. Constantly changing and evolving in looks while the people living within try their best to keep up with the times and interests of those who make the city work.

In the end, city living is probably best described as a way of life for the youth. City living keeps on constantly on their toes and feeling young because everything about the life is meant to be enjoyed to the hilt. It is a never ending adventure that cannot be compared to anything else in the world. It is a state of mind that does not pigeon hole anybody because of his surroundings. City dwelling is all about breaking free and discovering ones self.

Living in the city is like the travel bug. Once you have been bitten by it, you will never want to stop. It is so enjoyable that nobody seems to ever get tired or grow old. It is more than a state of mind, city living is a state of physical and mental personality. Go ahead, try living in the city, it will change your life.

How the pros and cons of city living vary around the world

Every day, more people become city dwellers. The challenge of urban existence is to balance its benefits and its drawbacks.

For most of the six million years of human evolution , all humans and protohumans lived like somewhat glorified chimpanzees , at low population densities, scattered over the landscape as families or small bands. Only within the past 6,000 years, a small fraction of human history, did some of our ancestors come together in cities. But today more than half the world’s people live in these new settings, some of which have tens of millions of inhabitants.

Urban life involves trade-offs. We may gain big benefits in return for suffering big disadvantages. Let’s consider two of them: the trade-off between individual freedom and community interests, and the trade-off between social ties and anonymity.

To understand the issue of freedom, take first the city of Singapore , in effect one of the world’s most densely populated micro-countries. Singapore’s nearly six million people are packed into about 250 square miles—230 times the average U.S. population density. It’s an Asian financial center, a major port on one of the world’s busiest shipping straits, and a tiny piece of prime real estate wedged between two giant, powerful neighbors, Indonesia and Malaysia. Singapore was part of Malaysia until 1965, when economic and racial tensions spurred its separation. But Singapore depends on Malaysia for most of its water and much of its food, and can’t afford to make mistakes or provoke its neighbors.

Singapore citizens’ bargain with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards.

So Singapore’s government monitors its citizens closely, to make sure that individuals don’t harm the community. Inspectors check for water standing in each household’s pots, lest they furnish breeding sites for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Smart-technology sensors measure (or will measure) the traffic on every street, the movements of every car, and the temperatures of and shadows cast by buildings. They also will track the water and electricity consumption of every household and will note the time whenever a household toilet is flushed. Americans may view such measures with horror, as George Orwell’s novel 1984 come true. But for Singapore’s citizens, it’s the bargain that they have made with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards, health, and security.

Next consider Germany’s cities, also densely populated. Local governments have rules about the shapes and colors of tiles that Germans may use on their houses’ roofs, and about the sizes and ages of trees that they can or can’t cut down on their property. To obtain a fishing license, Germans must attend many hours of fishing classes, then pass a 60-question exam. Most Americans would bristle at such restrictions. But benefits to German communities include beautiful regional architecture , green cities, government support for the arts, and healthy fish populations.

At the opposite extreme comes my own city of Los Angeles, where rights of the individual property owner are prized as sacred. The result is a free-for-all, in which many individuals and communities suffer disadvantages. Almost any style of house is permissible; local architectural character is nonexistent. Tree cover is vanishing, temperatures are rising, and landowners’ excavated dirt and sprayed pesticides end up on neighbors’ property. To fish in the local bay waters, anyone can buy a fishing license—no questions asked—so of course fish populations decline.

For Hungry Minds

The outcomes of trade-offs differ for Singapore, Germany, and L.A. because different geographies and histories have led to different customs. Population density is highest in Singapore, intermediate in Germany, lowest in the United States (including California). China—whence the ancestors of most of Singapore’s population arrived—has had cities for five millennia, Germany for two millennia, the United States for just a few centuries. Chinese traditional farming is communal; Germans have close-packed individual farms; and U.S. frontier settlements had self-sufficient, widely scattered families. The cultural legacies of those differences live on today.

Another issue of urban life is the trade-off between social ties and anonymity. Traditional living arrangements still practiced today in rural areas of New Guinea, where I’ve been working since the 1960s, resemble those formerly practiced in pre-urban Western societies. New Guinea villagers live out their lives where they were born, constantly surrounded by lifelong friends and social support.

A first reaction of many lonely, urban Americans is: How heartwarmingly wonderful! When New Guinea villagers move to cities, they find themselves surrounded by strangers, their friends few or recent or scattered across the city. The frequent results are unhappy isolation, decline of social support, and proliferation of urban crime.

Still, we American city dwellers shouldn’t romanticize traditional village living arrangements. My New Guinea friends tell me that those arrangements are also socially suffocating, and limit individuals’ abilities to realize their potential. In New Guinea villages, everybody knows, constantly watches, and incessantly discusses what everybody else is doing.

As a result, a New Guinea friend who spent years living in a U.S. city loved it—because (as she told me) she could sit alone and read a newspaper in peaceful anonymity in a sidewalk café, without being importuned by fellow clan members asking her for money and bewailing their troubles. New Guineans have learned to appreciate the modern urban inventions of opaque bags and trouser pockets—because those inventions permit them to conceal things from neighbors and thereby to acquire small luxuries without becoming targets of village comment. Thus, New Guineans recognize drawbacks as well as heartwarming benefits of village life. They also understand the benefits, not just the pains, of urban anonymity.

It all comes down to compromises. As the world becomes increasingly urban, will all of us be forced to adopt more of Singapore’s solutions? If a government meter that records every flushing of your toilet is part of the price you’d have to pay for living in safety, health, affluence, and beautiful surroundings, what would you choose?

Moving to a new home can be exciting, especially if you move somewhere that is very different from where you currently live. It can also be stressful moving to a new environment that you are not used to. One of the biggest changes you can make in your living situation is moving from a small town or suburb into a big city like Chicago.

Moving from Suburbs and Small Towns

Many people who have never lived in a big city but have had the desire eventually succumb to the allure of city life and find themselves living in a much more populated and concentrated area than they experienced in the suburbs.

While there are plenty of people that would love to move to the city, big city life is not for everyone. It is very different than life in the suburbs or a small town and moves at a much faster pace. Like with any location, living in a major city has its advantages and disadvantages that you must take into account before ultimately deciding to ditch the suburbs for the big city lights.

The following are the main pros and cons of living in a city that you should consider before moving, even if you have always wanted to live in a major city.

Pros of living in the city.

Even though city living has its inconveniences, it makes up for these inconveniences with all that it has to offer. Big cities are major cultural centers that have vibrant art and music scenes, a wider variety of food, more places of interest such as museums, events like ball games and concerts, and a diverse population with a shared experience of city living. The following are the main advantages of city life:

1. Meeting New People

You will meet new people anywhere you move, but the experience is different in a city because major cities draw all kinds of people to them from all over the world. There are also more people in a city which means you will be encountering new faces every day. Meeting and talking to new people who have had very different life experiences than yours can be refreshing and give you a new perspective.

2. Activities

If you have lived in the same town for 10 years or more, chances are that you know the town very well and have done about everything there is to do. If you spend 10 years living in a major city, you likely won’t come close to experiencing everything the city has to offer. There is always something to do in a major city to keep people of all different interests from getting bored. Most cities have a lively nightlife, different types of food to try, shows of all types, museums, landmarks, parks, festivals , sports games, and much more. If you are a visual or performance artist or a musician, there are plenty of opportunities in big cities to become a part of the scene.

3. Public Transportation

The public transportation system in major cities is a good alternative to driving yourself and dealing with the traffic and parking situation. Cities have trains or subways, buses, and plenty of taxis and ride sharing drivers so you can get where you need to go. Many public transportation options such as the bus and train are very affordable and free you of the hassle of driving. If you live in Chicago, for example, the average cost of public transpiration per month is around $82; in New York, the average cost per month is around $130 according to Expatistan.com .

It is possible to live without a car in most major cities. According to AAA , the average is $10,728 or $894 per month for owning and operating a new vehicle in 2022. It is certainly a hefty cost.

4. Big Events

Despite the high costs of living in the city, employers are usually willing to pay more. This is why many suburbanites commute to the city to get the higher pay and still enjoy the economical housing costs. Specifically large corporations like Google, Amazon and McDonald’s who moved many of their corporate offices downtown are offering higher salaries with remote positions. So some employees many not have to face the commute everyday.

With companies ruling the city skyscrapers, it’s pretty hard not to find a job, although it may be tough to find one that pays your elevated rent cost. But a city full of companies is a city full of career opportunities. Chances are you’ll find one you love. If you want to get into skilled work in technology, arts, entertainment, or business, these type of highly skilled jobs tend to concentrate in big cities .

Statistics also show that people in larger cities also find better employment opportunities than those in the suburbs or smaller towns.

9. Lots of Dining Options

There’s never any shortage of authentic restaurants in the cities. From fast food chains to Mom and Pop restaurants, you’re likely to find a cuisine of your liking within a mile or two.

Although dining options in the city are also usually higher due to their higher rent, many restaurants will have lunch and dinner specials as well as the availability of food stands. So you’ll have to do some research to get in on the good deals.

10. Close Proximity to Airports

If you have to travel a lot for work , you’ll definitely have an easier to commute to the airport when living in the city compared to the small towns. Instead of paying an Uber or Lyft for $20+, public transportation has connecting routes to international airports everywhere for just a few bucks.

Living next to an international airport will also have more non-stop flights, so you can expect to arrive at your final destination must faster.

Healthcare access is important for many individuals when considering where to move. Living in the city also provides you with easier and better access to mental and physical health care options. You are more likely to find specialized care when needed. If you live in a big city, the medical technology is likely better and more advanced compared to rural areas.

According to Pew Research Center , the average distance to the nearest hospital is around 5 miles for urban and suburban residents, while rural residents live an average of over 10 miles away from the nearest hospital, doubling the distance.

People who routinely visit or work in a big city know that they can be a hassle. Major cities have more people, traffic, and neighborhoods that can make navigating through the city more difficult. The following are the main disadvantages of big city life:

1. High Cost of Living

The higher cost of living is the first disadvantage that people typically think of when considering moving to a city. Major cities always have a higher cost of living than the surrounding suburbs, and cities like San Francisco and New York routinely have the highest costs of living in the U.S. Normal living expenses such as rent and utilities tend to be higher in big cities and you may have additional living expenses you wouldn’t have in the suburbs such as parking permits and laundry. Food, drinks, tobacco products, and gasoline are also more expensive in major cities.

In general, the noise level in major cities is higher than in the suburbs. Cities have more people and more traffic that contribute to the noise, as well as trains and nearby airports with loud planes flying in and out. Special events such as concerts and ball games can also make a neighborhood louder and more congested. Downtown areas in some major cities like New York are loud and busy almost 24 hours a day. However, it is possible to find city neighborhoods that are almost as quiet as the suburbs. Chicago has plenty of neighborhoods throughout the city that are relatively quiet.

Moving from the suburbs to the city almost always involves downsizing your living space. Most people in major cities live in apartments and in some cities, the apartments can be very small. It is also rare to have an outside space like a yard or patio. There are homes in major cities, some with decent sized yards, but they are much more expensive than in the suburbs . The parking situation in a major city is a huge hassle compared to the suburbs. In the suburbs, people can park in their driveways or on their residential streets and most businesses have parking lots for their customers to use. In big cities, parking is not a guarantee . Some residential streets are permit parking only which means you need to buy a permit, and streets with free parking fill up fast. It is rare for an apartment to have a designated parking space, but there are apartments that do . It is also rare for businesses to have their own parking lots which means that you will most likely have to pay to park somewhere on the street, maybe even a couple blocks away from your destination.

5. Higher Auto Insurance Premiums

If you live in the city and absolutely must have a car, congested city living will lead to a higher risk of accidents. This will then yield a higher insurance rate when living in the city compared to the suburbs.

According to ValuePenguin, drivers report paying almost $1,000 higher on their insurance premiums when living in a big city than their state’s national average.

6. Higher Crime Rates

Some cities will have higher crime rates than other, but you can definitely count on these urban areas to be more dangerous than smaller towns. More people = more crime.

Are metro cities better or not? This has been an ongoing debate between city-dwellers and those living in towns. Rightfully so. Both have their advantages and drawbacks. A small town has better quality air and far less pollution than a city. Small town residents have the luxury of walking out of their homes to absolute tranquillity instead of the noise and bustle of a big city. Moreover, towns are much closer to nature and allow you to take a breather from the chaos of a concrete jungle.

However, with stores on every corner and excellent accessibility to entertainment and the arts, living in a city is much more exciting. Moreover, cities offer job opportunities that would not be available in smaller towns. This is often also the main reason people move to a metropolitan area. Further, with quality institutions, cities allow people access to better quality education. In addition, cities also have spaces that offer greenery and serenity in parks and gated communities. People do not have to go hunting for it in smaller towns. Nevertheless, if one still wishes to enjoy the peace of a town, they can always take one of the many available modes of transportation to the nearest town.

Like everything in this world, living in a city has pros and cons. However, the population in cities alone highlights its many advantages. Therefore, based on my personal analysis and experiences, it is much better to make a good living and enjoy the conveniences of a large metro city than to stay in a small town or hamlet.

The events of the past few years have left many of us reevaluating where and how we work and live. There’s a reason big cities attract big populations. With endless activities, great food, and better jobs, it’s no surprise many people dream of making the move. The advantages of living in the city include:

1. More Job Opportunities

Large corporations tend to flock to cities, and one look at city skyscrapers will give you a good idea of what companies you can apply to. Whether you’re interested in the corporate world, retail, the medical field, or something in between, you’ll find no shortage of job openings. And many of these jobs come with higher salaries than outside the city.

2. Tons of Entertainment and Dining Options

One of the biggest pros of living in the city is you never have to be bored. City life is bustling, and you will always find things to do. From Instagram-worthy brunch spots to cozy local cafes to vibrant nightclubs, there are options that fit every lifestyle and mood.

People are usually faced with different options when deciding on where to live. That is do they want to live in the city or would they prefer to live in the suburbs where it is more peaceful. The essay that follows intends to show the advantages and disadvantages of city life. Before someone settles down, one has to consider the life that he or she prefers. The essay will give comparison and contrast between the advantages and disadvantages of city life.

There are certain advantages that come with life in the city. One of the biggest advantages that life in the city presents is the ease in the accessibility of educational institutions, business centers and trade. A critical analysis of city life shows that most educational institutions are located in the city. Majority of colleges and universities are located in the city. This causes students who live outside the city tom incur transport costs everyday so that they can reach their educational institutions.

Another advantage that comes with city life is that no transport costs are incurred. This is because business centers are located in the city. Schools are also in the city and the two distances between school and home or work and home is just a walking distance. This helps to save the costs of transport that would otherwise have been incurred if the person had been living far from the city. There is little or no driving involved simply because the supermarket is just around the corner. There is provision of public transportation as a way of cutting down on the fumes being released in the atmosphere.

The close proximity of these educational institutions and work places also saves time. The time that would have been wasted in trying to connect the two areas is saved. Living in the city therefore helps to save the time that would have been otherwise wasted in commuting.

Those people living in the city can also reduce expenses. The money that would have otherwise have been used in eating at a hotel is saved. Living in the city enables one to go home during lunch and eat there rather than eating at a hotel. Those living away from the city have to incur the expenses of eating out in hotels and this entails big spending even though it is affordable.

There are also disadvantages that come with living in the city. One of them is the high crime rate that exists in the city. This can be attributed to the fact that a variety of all sorts of people is found in the city.

Another problem present in the city is the pollution rate. Even though the number of vehicles is greatly reduced, there is wide spread pollution due to the numerous numbers of industries that are present in the city.

The presence of buildings everywhere in the city is another problem that is faced in the city. All the trees are cut down to provide rental space and therefore little fresh air can be found in the city. Life in the suburbs is great as there is plenty of land and trees are everywhere. This provides a serene environment where there is plenty of fresh air to be enjoyed as compared to the city where almost every space is filled up with buildings.

One of the benefits of suburban life is the privacy that is experienced by the people living in this place. This sort of privacy enables people to get to know each other as compared to the city where people are always too busy with their lives to want to know even who their next neighbor is.

One disadvantage of suburban life is the fact that taxation is scarce and therefore the social amenities are not adequately advanced or equipped. Comparing this to life in the city shows, that taxation in the city is high and therefore there are adequate funds make equipping public places such as libraries easy.

A comparison between the city and the suburbs shows that both places experience crimes. Though the city has higher incidences of crime and violence, the suburbs also receive their own fair share of crimes. This one thing is common to both city life and suburban life.

To conclude, both the city and suburbs have their own advantages and disadvantages. Both of them experience violence and crime. Pollution rate is high in the city while there is plenty of fresh air in the suburbs where trees exist in great numbers. Since both places have their own pros and cons, the choice of where to stay depends mainly on a person’s lifestyle and preferences.

There’s no denying the appeal of living in a city. The buildings stretch endlessly above, while the streets below hide millions of stories and lives. They truly are incredible places to live.

But cities, by their nature, involve a lot of things crammed into a small space. So what’s that concentration doing to your health?

For the first time in history, there are more people living in urban areas than in rural areas. In 1950, roughly 30 percent of the world’s population lived in cities. By 2014 that number had grown to 54 percent. Estimates suggest that by 2050, over 70 percent of the world’s population will live in a city. And as this number swells, so do the ramifications.

As it turns out, there are numerous health impacts, both positive and negative, of living in a city.

There’s a lot of stigma surrounding urban living, and chief among them is safety. A big worry of those thinking about moving to a metropolitan area is crime, and whether or not they’ll be able to walk home at 3am without fear.

However, some of those worries may be unfounded, at least in the US. According to an article in Time Magazine , living in a city is significantly safer than living in the countryside. The risk of what’s called injury death, which includes traffic accidents and crime, is 20 percent higher in the country than it is in the city.

And although, yes, the risk of homicide is undeniably higher in cities, those rates are going down. In 2012, New York City had 414 murders , a record low. And if that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that this is for a city of over 8 million residents.

For some perspective, that rate is pretty low when compared to somewhere like Joao Pessoa in Brazil. This city of 723,515 had 518 homicides in 2012, ranking 10th in the world.

Do you think taking a taxi is a dangerous trip? Think again. You’re much less likely to perish in a traffic accident in a city than in a rural area, by more than half.

Safety takes many forms. Studies have shown that there’s a relationship between a rise in population and lowered rates of suicide. While rates of traffic accidents proportionally increased as population increased, suicide rates didn’t increase as quickly-- Meaning the higher the population a city is, the less likely people are to commit suicide. Which kind of goes against the stereotype of the lonely city dweller.

But wait, there’s more!

Obesity rates are significantly higher in rural areas than they are in cities. According to the Rural Assistance Center, “self reported obesity and overweight [level] increases by rurality, with the most remote areas having the highest levels.” Though the reasoning for this is still murky, it may be accredited to the amount of walking done in a metropolitan area when compared to rural walking rates.

Speaking of which, all that walking also contributes to a smaller carbon footprint for city dwellers than country dwellers. According to an article by the International Institute for Environment and Development, there is a “tenfold difference in GHG emissions per person between a dense inner city neighbourhood with good access to public transport and a low density suburb distant from shops.”

Which, when you think about it, makes sense. I currently live in the metropolitan area of New York City, in a suburb just north of the Bronx, and I drive way more when I’m in my town than when I’m in the City. In fact, I’ve never driven on the island of Manhattan because there’s really no need. It’s easier, faster and more environmentally friendly to walk and take public transportation than it is to drive.

But living in a city isn’t all smiles and sunshine. There’s a whole host of factors that make you just want to curl up in a farmhouse in Iowa, a hundred miles away from the nearest telephone.

For instance, living in a city might be making you crazy.

According to an article in the Guardian, the brains of people living in rural areas differ drastically when compared to those living in urban environments. The article, which draws on the research of Dr Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg of the Central Institute of Mental health in Mannheim, Germany, argues that the brains of urbanites handle stress much worse than their country counterparts. This is probably because city dwellers face encounter environmental stressors more often.

It was found that the two regions most associated with stress, the amygdalae and the perigenual anterior cingulate cortex (pACC), were significantly more active in city dwellers when presented with a stressful situation . This means that when they get stressed, urbanites get really stressed. The sections of their brain that regulate the fight-or-flight mentality become overactive when presented with minimal levels of stress. This reaction was much less severe in their country dwelling equivalents. Again, this is probably because the ability to cope with stress becomes weakened in the face of continual stress.

And that’s not all. Previous research cited by the Guardian has also shown that city denizens “have a 21 percent increased risk of anxiety disorders, and a 39 percent increased risk of mood disorders.” And in case that wasn’t enough, people born and raised in cities are also twice as likely to develop schizophrenia.

A big contributor to these increased anxiety disorders is perpetual overcrowding. According to an article in LSE Cities, “living in crowded areas is associated with increased social stress, since the environment becomes less controllable for the individual.”

The sheer reality of constantly being surrounded by people is interpreted by the brain as a lack of control, be it consciously or subconsciously, which increases anxiety. This starts a domino effect, as increased anxiety and stress lead to a lack of sleep and chronic fatigue, which inspires a compromised immune system, and jeopardized health.

Speaking of chronic fatigue, cities may also negatively affect circadian rhythms. According to the Huffington Post , city life causes faster circadian rhythms in blackbirds, causing them to be active for 40 minutes longer than their rural counterparts. This circadian disruption is most likely present in humans too: it’s no coincidence that New York is called the city that never sleeps (so much light and noise!).

Furthermore, PBS suggests that a disrupted circadian rhythm can actually increase the risk of developing breast cancer. In the article, epidemiologist Richard Stevens of the University of Connecticut argues that women working night shifts are almost twice as likely to develop breast cancer.

And it isn’t just the lack of sleep. Small apartments have also been found to have negative effects on health.

As New York City struggles to provide enough housing for its growing population, more and more often smaller apartments are suggested as a solution-- but the potential health risks may overshadow the benefits. These ‘micro-units’ range between 250-370 square feet, whereas the average New York City apartment is 750 square feet.

According to an article in The Atlantic , “a resident with a demanding job may feel trapped in a claustrophobic apartment at night--forced to choose between the physical crowding of furniture and belongings in his unit, and social crowding.” It’s important to remember that this claustrophobia is most readily felt in these micro-units. A small apartment could compound the issue of overcrowding that an urbanite may feel already.

That being said, there absolutely is merit to living in a smaller space. People with tens of thousands of square feet for themselves and their cat don’t need that much room, and are negatively impacting to the environment.

City living may have its ups and downs health wise, but you can’t argue that metropolitan air pollution is the most dangerous health factor… right?

Well, honestly-- it’s complicated.

It’s complicated because recent studies have found that race and income are much more impactful on a child’s likelihood of getting asthma than where they grew up. According to an article in Time , “the greatest predictors of asthma risk... are poverty and being African American or Puerto Rican.” This may be due to extraneous factors such as lack of resources and indoor pollution.

But pollution risk isn’t just about asthma.

According to the WHO , pollution in both rural and metropolitan areas caused 3.7 million premature deaths in 2012, primarily due to heart disease and strokes. Of that number, more than two thirds were in India or China.

These numbers are shocking, but they reflect a pattern in pollution. In countries where there are fewer regulations on pollutants, there are significantly more deaths. Places like the United States and Europe tend to produce more agricultural pollution than any other kind. Less developed areas such as India and China produce much more pollution from residential sources.

According to an article in Time “In India and China… emissions from residential heating and cooking drive air pollution by creating unhealthy quantities of smoke. Overall, residential heating emissions cause one third of air pollution-related deaths worldwide.”

This speaks on the differences between developed and developing countries. In places where there are strict regulations on pollution and air quality, the negative impacts of living in a city are mitigated. For example, according to a report from NYC Health , there’s just a 0.8 percent increase of hospitalizations due to acute, daily exposure to pollution in the warm season in New York City.

On the contrary, in Delhi, India, just under half of the city’s 4.4 million children have irreversible lung damage due to pollution. The study tracked 11,000 children for three years, and came to the shocking conclusion that “children in Delhi, between four and 17 years of age, were worse off than their counterparts elsewhere-- the figures were twice to four times as bad.”

In cities such as Paris, London, Madrid or New York, we tend to disregard the health impacts of living in such a place because they’re relatively negligible. Poverty and race are much bigger contributing factors of asthma than the pollution. But there are places like Delhi where millions of people are at risk of debilitating health problems due to the air they’re breathing.

Now’s the time to start talking about this, to urge all world leaders, not just those in the developed world, to implement stricter pollution regulations, for the good of the world and its people.

Whether you’d rather focus on the positives of city life or the negatives, there’s no arguing that living in a sprawling metropolis affects you. And now more than ever, we’re going to have to delve into those impacts as city population grows.

Additionally, greater earnings are also another reason why workers are attracted to large cities. High-skilled workers tend to concentrate in urban centers because they can accumulate valuable experiences that are not available elsewhere. This skilled workforce is, of course, the target of agglomeration economies which are often willing to pay higher wages.

The increased cost of living, on the other hand, is the first disadvantage that people typically evaluate when considering relocating to a city. Some people believe that living in big cities is becoming more difficult. Others believe that it is getting easier. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. OR Describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city.

There has been much debate about whether city life is harder or easier. While it is argued that it is more difficult to live there, I think there are more comforts of urban life.

City dwellers may be confronted with various problems. The first matter can be the higher cost of living than that in villages or other smaller towns because urban citizens might have to pay higher prices for transport service or household bills. Secondly, high population density in urban areas may cause overcrowding , followed by a lack of open spaces for green trees or other recreational activities for metropolitan residents . Finally, together with thousands of tons of daily emissions discharged from families or offices, a huge quantity of fumes are released from motor street vehicles or metropolitan factories, leading to air and water pollution. In other words, there may be a deterioration in the quality of air and water ; consequently, health conditions are likely to be threatened.

However, in my view, city life is becoming easier in several cases. Well-known universities, schools at the international level, or other high-quality educational centers located in metropolitan zones generate advantages for city inhabitants to enjoy better educational opportunities to increase their knowledge level . Another factor to make urban life easier is that thanks to the governmental financial investment in improvements in public transport systems like bus or underground services in cities, urban residents’ travel can be facilitated. Furthermore, metropolitan citizens may enhance their spiritual life or enjoy relaxing moments by going to the cinema and theater or spending time in art galleries as well as museums.

In conclusion, although there are numerous difficulties of residing in metropolitan areas, from my point of view, it is increasingly easier to spend life in big urban areas on the basis of my above-mentioned analyses and explanation.
