Paris! La Ville Lumière (= “City of Lights”) !

Let’s walk around Paris across all its neighborhoods – the arrondissements !

Let’s stroll around the lovely Parisian sights together.

1) paris and its “arrondissements”: the city center (rive droite).

The first fourth arrondissements are in the very center of the city, on the right side of the river la Seine – on la rive droite , the right bank:

• le 1er (premier) arrondissement, → Musée du Louvre
• le 2ème (deuxième) arrondissement, → L’ancienne Bourse
• le 3ème (troisième) arrondissement, → Le Marais (neighborhood)
• le 4ème (quatrième) arrondissement. → Notre-Dame de Paris

Un arrondissement is an administrative division of the city. There are twenty of them in Paris, and they’re numbered like un escargot, a snail, in a spiral, starting in the center.

Many of them used to be separate villages, but they got absorbed into the city while it grew.

You can easily walk across them, they’re not that big – easily in the city center. You can also take le métro for longer distances.

Un arrondissement is an official administrative division, only for the three largest French cities: Paris , Lyon and Marseille . Un quartier is a better translation for “ a neighborhood ” – it’s less official, its borders can be fuzzy, and it applies to any city.

2) Paris and its arrondissements: city center (rive gauche)

The next arrondissements of the city center are on la rive gauche , the left bank of the river Seine.

Le 5è (cinquième) arrrondissement and l e 6è (sixième) arrondissement are also some of the oldest streets in Paris. They’ve traditionally been a place for students and the center of French intellectual life, with le Quartier latin .

→ The name of le quartier latin (the latin quarter) comes from its universities – such as the famous la Sorbonne – that used to teach in the latin language (and latin classics). The name was coined to poke fun at the professors and students who would live in the neighborhood.

In the area, you can visit Le Panthéon , where the Republic has buried great men and women since the Revolution: Voltaire , Victor Hugo , Pierre et Marie Curie … And recently, Josephine Baker . At the top is written: “Aux grands hommes la patrie reconnaissante.” (= “To the great men, from a grateful nation / fatherland.” )

In le sixième arrondissement , you can walk around in Saint-Germain-des-Prés , the chic neighborhood that used to be the center of French philosophy and literature in the 1950s, with residents such as Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Juliette Gréco, Jean-Luc Godard…

Cultural extra mile with songs: – Place des Grands Hommes → By Patrick Bruel, famous singer (and later, actor) from the 80s and 90s; the narrator has a meeting in front of the Panthéon with his friends from university, planned 10 years ago (“ On s’était donné rendez-vous dans dix ans… ”) Did they live up to their high expectations? – Il n’y a plus d’après → Written by Guy Béard, sung by several great singers like Juliette Greco, but I like this version by Anthony Perkins best. The lyrics are also about a meeting with the same person in the same place, years later. Except that here, it’s in Saint-Germain-des-Prés – and the narrator realizes that places and people change so much and so quickly, that it’s as if “there’s no ‘after’ or ‘before’ – only now.”

La Seine is un fleuve , a river that flows into the sea (and not in another river.) It comes from Burgundy in the East and flows into La Manche , the Channel , in the West. That’s why the northern side of Paris is the “right” bank and the South is the “left” bank : it’s from the river’s point of view, looking West.

3) Paris and its arrondissements: West

Westwards, you’ll find the most expensive streets in Paris. And the most famous landmarks!

• Le 7ème (septième) arrondissement → La tour Eiffel.
• Le 8ème (huitième) arrondissement → L’Arc de Triomphe
• Le 9ème (neuvième) arrondissement → Les Champs-Élysées

They’re not the most fun places to walk in, though. It’s large avenues for tourists, expensive places and bland international stores.

Meanwhile le 16e (seizième) is mostly famous for being a neighborhood of rich Parisians, while le 17e (dix-septième) is home for many embassies.

On the map, you might notice that le 16ème is also home to a large forest. It’s le bois de Boulogne (= Boulogne woods.) It has a strange double reputation.

By day, it’s pleasant and very chic – that’s where rich people come to watch the horse-races in l’hippodrome . You’ll find cute canals and quiet lakes, the children’s amusement park of Le Jardin d’Acclimatation , and the museum of La Fondation Louis-Vuitton , funded by the luxury brand. It can be nice to walk around – but it’s not the most “touristy” or “real Parisian” or “nice park” atmosphere you could find in Paris and its area, so you’d probably better visit some other Parisian places.

By night, though, it’s mostly infamous as a hotspot of prostitution. For instance, a 1945 French movie is called Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne (= The Ladies of the Boulogne woods.)

4) Paris and its arrondissements : Sleepy South Side

Les 12è (douzième), 13è (treizième), 14è (quatorzième) et 15è (quinzième) arrondissements are not as flashy for tourism, but they’re much more walkable and friendly.

You’ll find universities and cinemas and real life.

I have a soft spot for Le Quartier du Montparnasse , around the Montparnasse railway station, in le 15ème . There, the lonely, modern, ugly, fascinating Tour Montparnasse towers over the whole neighborhood. In the streets around the railway station, you might notice an abundance of les crêperies , restaurants serving les crêpes , a specialty from Brittany . The reason is that the trains leaving the station are going westwards, towards (and from) Brittany. In the XIXth and early-XXth century, Briton peasants and poor people would emigrate to Paris – many of them as nannies, like Bécassine , the protagonist of a famous childrens’ book . This migration led to a new regional community in Paris, centered around the train station where their friends would come from. And nowadays, crêperies .

5) Paris and its arrondissements: Hip Right Bank

Le 11è (onzième) arrondissement is quite hip and more popular than other neighborhoods, with bars and nightclubs like le Bataclan , near la place de la Bastille , where the famous prison of la Bastille used to be.

Le 10è (dixième) is the neighborhood of Les Grands Boulevards , with great theaters and shops. These boulevards were famously built under le baron Haussmann , a prefect of Paris in the XIXth century, who tore down the little streets to make way for large avenues, much easier to defend against a mob.

At that time, they built the famous les immeubles haussmaniens , these buildings with a typical Parisian aesthetic. Then we can walk up to l’Opéra Garnier in le 9è (neuvième) arrondissement , alongside other theaters and shops.

Further North, le 18è (dix-huitième) arrondissement is host to the red lights of le Quartier Pigalle , including the famous le Moulin Rouge , near sex shops, nightclubs but also theaters like La Cigale .

This arrondissement is overlooked by the hill of Montmartre, where you’ll find the giant church of le Sacré-Cœur , and where the movie Amélie took place.

Le 19è (dix-neuvième) is big and full of parks such as le parc de la Villette , where my grandmother used to take us for a fun day. Finally, le 20è (vingtième) arrondissement is in a strange spot, with the popular streets of Belleville, the giant cemetery of le Père-Lachaise where famous people rest (such as Jim Morrisson), and the cute cafés of Charonne.

Montmartre is famous for its artists and la vie de bohème , carefree bohemian life of penniless creation. Yet, like all of Paris, it’s always been gentrifying. It’s the point of a very famous song by Charles Aznavour: La Bohème.

Cultural extra mile if you’re still here (congrats!) :

In the former town of Belleville, there used to be a village called Ménilmontant . And for several reasons (including the nice-sounding name), it inspired several French songs and movies I know. Ménilmontant – a Charles Trénet song; a cover I like by Avalon Jazz Band . La rue de Ménilmontant – by 2000s French singer Camille. Rue des Cascades (a street in Ménilmontant) – by Yann Tiersen, composer for the movie Amélie. Les Triplettes de Belleville , a fantastic French animated movie, where three old women in old Belleville join up to find their lost grandson.

All in all, the 20 arrondissements of Paris draw a diverse city, a European capital that has kept its history and still welcomes millions of people every year.

City of Paris

The city of Paris is located in the northern part of the Republic of France, one of the richest, most beautiful and most attractive cities in the world.

It has the largest population in comparison to other French cities and has a population of more than two million.It covers an area of ​​approximately 105 square kilometers. In the middle of it is the Seine River, which divides it into two halves

Paris is famous for its elegance, fashion, literature and arts.It also contains many shops that include the most famous international brands, as well as international fashion houses and world-renowned designers.

The reason for the naming of Paris by this name

The reason for the naming of Paris by this name back  to its first inhabitants of the Gaul tribe known as the Parisian. Paris is known internationally as the City of Lights or the City of Light, this is because it is the first city in Europe to be lit by lamps.

And is one of the most important tourist cities, which attracts millions of tourists annually from different countries of the world. It contains four international airports, most notably the Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly Airports.

Paris Economy

The city of Paris is an important center of the economy, with many French and international companies. It relies heavily on tourism and advanced industries such as the automotive industry .

Paris is an important center for the French automobile industry, as well as other industries such as perfume  and women’s luxury clothes  which are sold in high-end shops in the city, and the city also has headquarters for the largest French newspapers.

Avenue Champs Elysées

Is the most famous and prestigious street in Paris and in France in general, and extends for a distance of about 1.9 km from the Arc de Triomphe to the square of Concorde containing the Egyptian obelisk in the middle.

It contains many cafes and restaurants, theaters and shops that contain the finest and most luxurious brands of clothing, makeup and perfumes, and there are many events throughout the year.

Arc de Triomphe

The construction of this monument began during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in commemoration of the victories of the French army.

It took thirty years to build. It is currently located at the beginning of the Champs-Elysées in Charles de Gaulle Square.

The names of the French wars and some of the names of the French soldiers have been engraved on its walls . It is about 50 meters high.

Louvre Museum

 Located on the north bank of the Seine, this museum houses many famous paintings, antiques and precious antiques, such as the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the world, the Venus de Mello statue, and a number of Egyptian artifacts brought from Egypt during the French campaign.

And the number of pieces of art in it are nearly one million pieces.

Palace of Versailles

Located in Versailles, approximately 25 km from Paris, one of the largest royal palaces in the world, built by King Louis XIV, this palace has been declared a museum since 1833 and surrounded by a large garden known as Versailles garden.

The Eiffel Tower

Is the symbol of the city of Paris and its longest and most famous landmark, a 324-meter-high iron tower designed by Gustave Evel at the centennial of the French Revolution, near the Seine in Champ de Mars garden.

Cathedral of Our Lady

Is a medieval Gothic masterpiece, the main religious building in Paris, consisting of engraved inscriptions in the rock.

Hold the French Fries! Paris Olympics Chart a New Gastronomic Course.

The environment will come first as France tries to revitalize the global image of its cuisine.

There will be no French fries for the 15,000 athletes at the Olympic Games that open in France in July. Yes, you read that right.

In what is being called the biggest restaurant in the world — a 700-foot-long former electrical power plant at the heart of the Olympic Village — there will be no foie gras, either, but vegetarian hot dogs and quinoa muesli will abound.

Strolling the length of what is known as the nave, a light-filled vaulted space where some 45,000 meals a day will be served 24/7 throughout the Olympics and Paralympics, Stéphane Chicheri and Charles Guilloy, the chefs in charge, sang the praises of vegetarian shawarma, za’atar-spiced sweet potatoes with hummus, cabbage pickles, beetroot falafel and grilled eggplant with smoked paprika.

This is a far cry from the classic French cuisine of elaborate sauces and “enough melted butter to thrombose a regiment,” as A.J. Liebling once described a dish .

But these are 21st-century Games on a warming planet. Carbon imprint trumps cassoulet. Vegetable protein is the thing; and of course athletes have to perform in a country of a thousand epicurean delights that are no-noes to their exacting nutritionists.

“French fries are too risky because of fire-hazard concerns over deep-fat fryers,” Mr. Guilloy explained. “No to foie gras because animal well-being is on everyone’s mind, and no to avocados because they are imported from a great distance and consume a lot of water.”

So how French sans French fries can these ecological Games be?

“Don’t worry; we’ll have French cheeses, blanquette of veal but with a lightened sauce, and of course baguettes,” Mr. Chicheri said with a smile. “Athletes will even be able to learn to make bread with a master baker.”

About 500 different dishes will be served at the Olympic Village dining hall in Saint-Denis, just north of Paris. The building is itself a tribute to environment-conscious adaptation: an almost century-old power plant of wrought-iron skeleton that became a movie studio before being transformed over the past year into a giant restaurant.

The Olympic Village restaurant will open as a global campaign by the government to boost French gastronomic impact and appeal gathers pace. With some 15 million visitors expected at the games, two million of them foreigners, France itself will be on display, and in particular Paris, posing the challenge of how to energize a tradition-bound culinary culture.

This is a critical moment for French cuisine, whose pedigree is undisputed but whose image has languished. How many “likes” these days does beef Bourguignon get beside ceviche, tapas or an omakase dinner?

“We’re a country of centuries-old gastronomic tradition, but the truth is that if you have a talent and you don’t nurture it, it can fade,” Olivia Grégoire, the minister for tourism, said in an interview.

She visited New York this month to promote a new multimillion-dollar initiative designed to introduce young chefs and innovative French dishes in places that will initially include South Korea, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “Food is French soft power,” Ms. Grégoire said. “It is also hard money.”

More than 800,000 people are employed in the restaurant business in France, and the gastronomic sector, including wine and spirits, generates more than $55 billion a year in revenue.

In few countries is the ritual gathering around a table as important. In even fewer is pride so intense in the varied produce of “terroirs,” particular parcels of land with their own soil and climate, from the Alps to the Atlantic and from Normandy to the Mediterranean.

“The finest gastronomy is in our DNA; it’s a reference for all students of haute cuisine,” said Alain Ducasse, one of the most acclaimed French chefs who has been chosen to cater the July 26 Olympics opening dinner for heads of state, at which the chef has been asked to serve beef.

“But there is a new international challenge and we have been slow to be part of it,” he said. “Talent is everywhere. We need to wake up to that.”

With 34 restaurants, and 18 Michelin stars, in Europe, Asia and the United States, Mr. Ducasse is no slouch, and there are other French chefs, like Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Daniel Boulud, who have successfully seen the world as their market.

But even as French cuisine has changed — adding fusion touches to old dishes in ways that have spawned the “néobistrot” and introducing “le sharing” as a shockingly novel way of eating — its image has scarcely changed.

In this context, the repertoire at the Olympic Village could be an important game changer. There will be six “grab-and-go” outlets, Asian cuisine, Afro-Caribbean dishes, vegetarian shawarma, hamburgers (meat, vegetarian or a combination of the two), Middle Eastern food and halal cuisine. Kosher food will also be available on demand.

Patatas bravas will probably be the closest anyone gets to French fries.

Two fully fledged French restaurants are planned — but without such classics as steak tartare, blood sausage or choucroute. Wine, of course, is off limits because in the end the point of this 46,000-square-foot emporium with 3,623 seats is to ready athletes for top performance.

The other point is to underscore that France takes its environmental responsibilities seriously.

The French Olympic authorities banned throwaway cutlery and plates. They have not banished trash cans from kitchens, as some Paris restaurants have, but they do demand a zero-waste culture. Some 80 percent of ingredients will be French, and 25 percent from within 155 miles of Paris. Halving the carbon imprint of the Tokyo or London Olympics is the target.

The French company organizing this vast catering enterprise is Sodexo Live, a branch of the Sodexo company, which employs 420,000 people in food services and facility management worldwide. Sodexo Live, which has catered 15 Super Bowls as well as 36 Roland Garros tennis tournaments in France, knows its business, but the scale of this challenge is unique.

“We are hiring 6,000 people. Our aim is that everyone should feel at home and that we marry the nutrition an athlete needs with gastronomic pleasure,” Nathalie Bellon-Szabo, the chief executive of Sodexo Live, said in an interview.

To that end, three much-lauded chefs have been chosen, each of whom will appear for a couple of days every week at the Olympic Village and prepare the creative dishes that France wants the world to know better.

They are Alexandre Mazzia, who grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo and has a restaurant in Marseille, AM, that bears a strong African influence and three Michelin stars; Akrame Benallal, who grew up in Algeria and runs Restaurant Akrame, a Paris restaurant with one star and some astonishing combinations of flavors — crab with gray shrimp and coffee, for example; and the French-born Amandine Chaignot, whose Café de Luce serves some of the most succulent frogs’ legs in the capital.

“French cuisine is emancipating itself. It has realized the need to change,” Mr. Mazzia, 47, said. “For me French cuisine is now multicultural, with different roots and spices, lighter, allied to a savoir-faire we must preserve.”

Mr. Benallal, 42, calls himself an “architect of taste,” forever sketching the presentation of new dishes because he believes “we eat first with our eyes.” His red and white quinoa muesli, topped with Parmesan, a little mascarpone and some smoked yogurt is typical of the inventiveness that has brought him a wide following.

“French cuisine is sometimes seen as boring,” he said. “It’s not boring. It’s singular. My restaurant is a cabinet full of curiosities, and that is what I will bring to the Games.”

As for Ms. Chaignot, 45, she has prepared a poached-egg croissant with artichoke cream, goat cheese and truffles to be eaten on the go at the Olympic Village. Another creation is a chicken dish with langoustines.

Even in a changing culinary world there are some constants. What, I asked her, defines French cuisine today?

“Butter is France,” she said. “And France is butter.”

Who is playing on Monday?

After finishing his third-round match after 3 a.m. on Sunday, defending champion Novak Djokovic faces No. 23 seed Francisco Cerundolo for a quarterfinal berth at about 4 p.m. local time (1400 GMT, 10:00 a.m. EDT) on Monday at Court Philippe Chatrier. A victory for Djokovic would be his 370th in a Grand Slam match, breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the most in tennis history.

Grand Slam title winners Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka are in action on Chatrier before Djokovic's match. No. 4 Rybakina takes on No. 15 Elina Svitolina, starting at 11 a.m. local time, followed by No. 2 Sabalenka against No. 22 Emma Navarro, the American who beat her this year on a hard court at Indian Wells, California.

The night session pits No. 4 Alexander Zverev against No. 13 Holger Rune. Zverev currently is involved in an appeal hearing at home in Germany related to accusations of domestic violence made by a former girlfriend.

What happened on Sunday?

Defending champion Iga Swiatek and third-seeded Coco Gauff both coasted through fourth-round matches against unseeded opponents to stay on course for a semifinal showdown that would be rematch of the 2022 French Open final won by Swiatek. The top-ranked Swiatek, who has won three of her four Grand Slam titles in Paris, claimed 48 of the 58 points during a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anastasia Potapova that lasted just 40 minutes.

Gauff defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 6-2 in an hour. Swiatek next faces Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, while Gauff goes up against three-time major finalist Ons Jabeur. One men's quarterfinal will be No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz, a two-time major champion, against No. 9 Stefanos Tsitsipas, a two-time Slam runner-up.

Alcaraz eliminated No. 21 Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, and Tsitsipas barely averted a two-set deficit in his 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-2 win against unseeded Matteo Arnaldi.

Djokovic is, not surprisingly, a heavy favorite to get to the quarterfinals, listed as a -800 money-line favorite against Cerundolo, who is at +500, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. In another men's fourth-round match, 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev is a -200 pick against Alex de Minaur (+155).

Even though Navarro is 1-0 against Sabalenka, it is Sabalenka (-450) who is the favorite. Navarro (+240) never has played in the fourth round at a major before, while Sabalenka has reached the semifinals at each of the past six Grand Slam tournaments.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the French Open after suffering a torn medial meniscus in his right knee in Monday’s five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo, making Jannik Sinner the first ever Italian man to become world No. 1 on Monday.

Sinner will become the 29th world No. 1 since the rankings started.

Djokovic, who is seeking a record 25th Grand Slam title, was due to face Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Ruud will get a walkover in the quarterfinals and will face either Alexander Zverev or Alex De Minaur in the top half of the draw.

"I am really sad to announce that I have to withdraw from #rolandgarros," Djokovic shared via his Instagram account. "I played with my heart and gave my all in yesterday's match and unfortunately, due to a medial meniscus tear in my right knee, my team and I had to make a tough decision after careful consideration and consultation."

"I wish the best of luck to the players competing this week and sincerely thank the incredible fans for all of the love and continued support. See you soon. With love and gratitude, Nole," he added.

Said Sinner: “First of all, it's everyone's dream to become No. 1 in the world. The other way, seeing Novak retiring and here I think it's for everyone, disappointing. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

With 14-time champion Rafael Nadal already out, the final weekend of Roland Garros won’t include two men who have combined to win 46 major titles.

Djokovic’s status for Wimbledon, which begins July 1, remains uncertain but he may be forced to miss extended time — possibly 3-6 months — with the injury. However, American Taylor Fritz suffered a similar injury at Roland Garros in 2021 and was back within a month for Wimbledon.

Djokovic is also eying the Paris Olympics, which run July 27-Aug. 4.

“I believe that Djokovic will do all he can to be ready for the Olympic games,” ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe said by text. “It’s the only trophy or medal missing “

Djokovic had to play two 4 1/2 five-set matches against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round and then Cerundolo in the fourth.

He took a medical timeout in the early part of the second set against Cerundolo after appearing to tweak his knee during a lengthy point that saw him scramble around the court.

“I started feeling the pain [in set two] and asked for the physio treatment and the medical timeout and tried to take care of it," he said . "It did disrupt me definitely in play. For two sets, two sets and a half, I didn't want to stay in the rally too long. Every time he would make sudden drop shots or change directions, I would not be feeling comfortable to do the running.

“At one point I didn't know, to be honest, whether I should continue or not with what's happening.”

The three-time Roland Garros champion ultimately overcame the injury to win, avoiding his first loss in a major before the quarterfinals since the 2020 U.S. Open when he was defaulted for hitting a line judge with a ball. He earned his 370th career major win, breaking a tie with Roger Federer.

Two-time major champ Carlos Alcaraz was the betting favorite entering the tournament and could face Sinner in the semifinals.

PARIS (AP) — Coco Gauff’s long and successful Tuesday at Roland Garros began when she arrived at about 8:15 a.m. There was a warmup session. A couple of meals. A couple of matches. Oh, and a couple of victories — first, one to reach the singles semifinals, and then one to reach the doubles quarterfinals, which wrapped up a little past 4:30 p.m.

“It goes by really fast, I will say,” the 20-year-old American said. “When you’re playing the match, it just goes by really fast.”

There is more work to be done, and there are more long days on the horizon, for Gauff, who will meet defending champion and No. 1-ranked Iga Swiatek in singles on Thursday.

“It’s good to just keep going and not think about this match as something huge — just another match — to not put too much baggage on your shoulders,” Swiatek said. “But I guess Coco is not easy. She really likes playing on clay, especially here. I’ll just focus on myself and I’ll prepare tactically and we’ll see.”

Swiatek picked up yet another lopsided victory, beating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2 and stretching her French Open winning streak to 19 matches as she seeks a third trophy in a row in Paris and her fourth in five years.

“She’s, I feel like, way better than anyone else on clay, and especially here. It’s very tough,” Vondrousova said. “I feel like on the court, you have nothing to maybe offer. She’s just too strong here.”

No. 3 Gauff came back to defeat three-time major finalist Ons Jabeur 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinals at a third consecutive Grand Slam tournament.

“I’ve been trying to do better at being consistent in the big tournaments,” Gauff said, “and I’m reaching that level of consistency.”

She won her first major title at the U.S. Open in September, then made it to the semifinals at the Australian Open in January. Gauff was runner-up to Swiatek at the French Open in 2022.

Overall, Swiatek has won 10 of 11 meetings against Gauff, including a 6-4, 6-3 semifinal win on clay last month en route to the Italian Open title.

“I definitely think I have to find a better way to play her than the last times I played on clay, because I’ve obviously been unsuccessful the last couple of times we’ve played — regardless of the surface and anything,” Gauff said. “She’s definitely a tough opponent for me. And for anybody.”

The day’s biggest news was that defending champion Novak Djokovic withdrew from the men’s bracket because of a torn meniscus in his right knee. He will be replaced at No. 1 in the ATP rankings by Jannik Sinner next week.

Casper Ruud, the runner-up in Paris the past two years, got a walkover into the semifinals, where he will play Alexander Zverev or Alex de Minaur. Sinner beat Grigor Dimitrov on Tuesday and next meets Carlos Alcaraz, a winner at night against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Other than a tough three-set triumph over Naomi Osaka in the second round , Swiatek has been dominant in this French Open. Take away the 17 games Osaka managed to win, and Swiatek has dropped a total of only 11 games in her other four matches.

Swiatek followed up her 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Anastasia Potapova in the fourth round by grabbing the initial seven games against Vondrousova.

“I felt,” Swiatek said, “like I was in the zone.”

And make no mistake: Vondrousova is no slouch. In addition to being a Grand Slam champion, she was a finalist at Roland Garros in 2019, won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and currently is ranked No. 6.

But she never stood a chance against Swiatek, who compiled 25 winners to just 10 unforced errors. Swiatek, a 23-year-old from Poland, faced just one break point — and, naturally, she saved it.

“Everything worked,” Swiatek said.

Against the eighth-seeded Jabeur, Gauff pulled away to lead 5-2 lead in the last set, then needed a trio of match points to close things out, acknowledging afterward that she grew a little tight. In the last game, Gauff needed to save a break point, before Jabeur dismissed one match point with a disguised drop shot that earned a roar from the stands. The 29-year-old Tunisian responded by putting her right index finger to her ear.

But on Gauff’s next opportunity to seal the victory, Jabeur badly flubbed an overhead. Gauff smiled, then raised her arms and yelled.

“My favorite thing about Coco is her fighting spirit. I think she’s playing, like, great tennis right now, but I saw her playing better before,” Jabeur said. “Obviously she’s such a fighter. She always tries to find ways. She’s really smart on the court.”

With the crowd at the main stadium loudly supporting Jabeur at times, Gauff did not play badly in the opening set. But Jabeur was superb, winning 17 of 18 first-serve points, never facing a single break point and accumulating a 12-5 edge in total winners.

When she delivered an ace at 114 mph (184 kph) to end the set, Jabeur nodded repeatedly.

“She’s a tough opponent and she’s well-loved on tour,” Gauff said. “I could tell by the crowd today — I know you guys wanted her to win. Honestly, whenever she’s not playing (me), I cheer for her, too.”
