Students as young as elementary-school age can learn to write persuasively. In fact, we’ll share some quick examples of persuasive essays for kids below. 

First, let’s discuss the structure of a “mini” persuasive essay.

A Simplified Structure for Persuasive Writing 

Of course, expectations and writing guidelines become more involved for older students, but elementary-aged students should keep it simple. 

The basic features of persuasive writing can be broken down into 5 steps:

• Topic sentence
• Opening argument 1
• Concluding statement

A topic sentence introduces the argument and clearly expresses the writer’s viewpoint. For a younger child, this is simply a straightforward statement that clearly expresses “this is my opinion.”

The next three steps list “pros” that support their topic statement. Each argument should be distinctly stated. 

Again, for an elementary-aged student, arguments can be brief and can simply be a list of reasons. 

The concluding statement wraps up by summarizing the arguments and restating the opinion. 

If this method of persuasive writing sounds complicated at first, rest assured, it’s not.

Example 1: A Persuasive Argument About Cats

Cats are the best pets. They can be left alone all day without getting mad. Cats don’t bark, so they are not noisy like dogs. You don’t have to let cats go outside to use the bathroom. As you can see, cats are less work and easier to take care of than dogs.

Example 2: A Persuasive Argument About Meal Choices

French fries should be served with every meal. First, French fries are delicious. Second, French fries are made of potatoes, which are vegetables, and they can air-fried without oil. Also, French fries don’t cost a lot of money. Because they are tasty, cheap, and can be cooked in a healthy way, French fries a perfect side dish to every meal.

Example 3: A Persuasive Argument Against Littering

You should never litter because it is wrong. Littering pollutes the Earth. Littering is throwing trash around outside, which looks ugly. Littering can also make you sick if it has germs on it. Littering is wrong because it makes the world a dirty, unsanitary place to live.

A persuasive essay uses logical reasoning to prove that one argument is more legitimate than the other. Through this, points are emphasized and elaborated for readers to understand the arguments presented. This may be used to sell a product or convince readers to accept a particular idea. How to Structure a Persuasive Essay?

There are three main parts of an essay , namely the introduction, the body, and the essay conclusion .

1. Start off with an attention grabber. This should also include the thesis statement of your essay.

3. Backup your arguments. With the data you have collected from your research or reflective essays , state facts and testimonies from experts. Be sure to cite your sources in order to avoid plagiarism.

4. Structure your points properly. Follow a specific order to present your points. This can start from the simplest to the most compelling of all. This will help you formulate a persuasive essay with a logical argument. You may also see effective ways and examples to start your essay .

Best Ideas for Persuasive Essays

The best persuasive short essays often focus on controversial issues. This would include issues that have greatly affected the society we live in today.

Topics that center on these themes may sound a little biased for some, but the purpose of a persuasive essay is to prove a point from a single perspective. The thing is, matters that are apparent but untouched are often the ones that are best to write about. It goes against the norm of just agreeing or contracting a given idea. Four Essential Tools to Help your Kids Succeed in Persuasive Writing

In our last blog post we discussed why persuasive writing is important for our kids to learn .  Now, we’re going to turn our attention to some tools that we believe will help your kids with their persuasive writing. Below are four instruction pages that you can print out as PDF files.

First, your child needs to formulate his or her ideas. This framework page will help them do that. Having filled it out, they can then start writing the speech, article, letter or other piece of persuasive writing.

Sentence starters

When your kid is ready to start writing out the piece, that’s where the next two pages come in handy. Here’s a page on sentence starters . Basically, they are prompts to help your child start the introduction, reasons and conclusion paragraphs.

Persuasive writing requires some strong words to convince the reader. Here’s a page of strong words for your child to consider in her or his writing.

Finally, we have put together a checklist for your child. We suggest you read it before embarking on the writing and then after to check that you fulfilled the criteria for the persuasive writing piece.

Now you just need to pick a topic. There are so many, but we suggest that you pick something your child is interested in. If you can’t think of anything, perhaps the following topics will spark your thinking:

-    Why recess (is/is not) important to students in school. (There’s been some debate recently about schools stopping recess and breaks during school hours.)

  -    The (importance/unimportance) of learning a second language.

  -    Fast food (should/should not) be banned.

  -    Cell phones (should/should not) be allowed at school.
