New York is the most well-known city of United States. I always used to hear that one must pay a visit to it at least once in life. Finally, my dream came true and I planned to go to New York anyhow. I was astonished to see the beauty, environment, people, and culture of this city.

The first place I visited was the Statue of Liberty which is the most famous statue in the whole world. It is undoubtedly a great piece of art which was made back in the late 19 th or 20 th century. It is a symbol of equality in the United States as thousands of refugees were being welcomed by the ship by that time.

New York Time Square

New York Time Square was also one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I found numerous entertainment options there like art gallery and funhouse. I also saw different talented performers there. Moreover, the midnight time of this place gives a chance to witness the largest digital art in the world which really makes one feel out of the world.

Central Park

Central Park is one of those places in New York which actually make it worth living. It has set an example for other places and parks with its exuberant and unique design. It contains everything from fountains, tennis court, theaters, and lakes to playgrounds, zoo, baseball field, and many other facilities. Moreover, it is a place where you would come across various historical buildings, bridges, statues, and nature around you.

I visited the central park in Manhattan which is the most visited park in the United States. There, I saw many ponds, lakes, zoo, and central park conservatory garden. I visited other parks too. But the central park attracted me the most.

Tourism in New York City is at its peak. Many visitors come there for the sake of witnessing the beautiful scenes and sights. On my visit to the New York City , the places which I visited include the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Times Square, Statue of Liberty, etc. I also visited the museum named the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I also went to the important parks like Washington Square Park, and central park.

Media hub of USA:-

When I visited the city, I recognized that New York is the center of attraction for media related services, as it is the main hub for film making and television production. Moreover, the headquarters of the three main transmission networks of America are situated here.

Conclusion about my visit to New York City:-

I can say that my visit to the New York City was truly awesome and amazing. I saw its culture and tried to understand its history. I enjoyed the short tour too much. In addition to it, I felt that the city and its people are full of life.

New York City has been the subject of poetic love letters , essayistic homages , emotional cartographies , and artistic tributes . But hardly anything captures the gritty, unfiltered magic of the world’s greatest city than the private recollections of beloved authors, recorded in their journals and correspondence, untainted by the prospect of an evaluating audience. Collected here are some of my favorite such impressions, culled from years of my personal marginalia in famous diaries , letters , and the occasional personal essay.

Mark Twain — in between dispensing advice to little girls and criticizing the popular press — makes a laconic note of New York’s unmanageable scale in an 1867 reflection included in the vintage anthology Mirror For Gotham: New York as Seen by Contemporaries from Dutch Days to the Present ( public library ):

The only trouble about this town is, that it is too large. You cannot accomplish anything in the way of business, you cannot even pay a friendly call, without devoting a whole day to it — that is, what people call a whole day who do not get up early. Many business men only give audience from eleven to one; therefore, if you miss those hours your affair must go over till next day. Now if you make the time at one place, even though you stay only ten or fifteen minutes, you can hardly get to your next point, because so many things and people will attract your attention and your conversation and curiosity, that the other three quarters of that hour will be frittered away. You have but one hour left, and my experience is that a man cannot go anywhere in New York in an hour. The distances are too great — you must have another day to it. If you have got six things to do, you have got to take six days to do them in.

In the recently released Italo Calvino: Letters, 1941–1985 ( public library ) — which also gave us the author’s wisdom on writing , America , and the meaning of life — Italo Calvino writes to his friend Paolo Spriano on Christmas Eve 1959, shortly after receiving a grant from the Ford Foundation to travel around America for six months alongside six other young writers:

New York has swallowed me up like a carnivorous plant swallowing a fly, I have been living a breathless life for fifty days now, here life consists of a series of appointments made a week or a fortnight in advance: lunch, cocktail party, dinner, evening party, these make up the various stages of the day which allow you constantly to meet new people, to make arrangements for other lunches, other dinners, other parties and so on ad infinitum. America (or rather New York, which is something quite separate) is not the land of the unforeseen, but it is the land of the richness of life, of the fullness of every hour in the day, the country which gives you the sense of carrying out a huge amount of activity, even though in fact you achieve very little, the country where solitude is impossible (I must have spent maybe just one evening on my own out of the fifty I have spent here, and that was because my date with the girl that I had arranged for that evening fell through: here you have to order everything in advance, they are buying theater tickets for March now, and a girl, even if she happens to be your girl at present, has to know a week in advance the evenings she is going out with you otherwise she goes out with someone else).

From the fantastic New York Diaries: 1609 to 2009 ( public library ) — one of the best history books of 2012 , which you can sample here — comes this 1947 celebration of New York’s defiant diversity by Simone de Beauvoir :

I’m utterly taken with New York. It’s true that both camps tell me, “New York is not America.” V. irritates me when he declares, “If you like New York, it’s because it’s a European city that’s strayed to the edge of this continent.” It is all too clear that New York is not Europe. But I’m even more distrustful of P., another pro-American Pétain supporter, when he contrasts New York — a city of foreigners and Jews — to the idyllic villages of New England, where the inhabitants are 100 percent American and endowed with patriarchal virtues. We have often heard “the real France” praised this way in contrast to the corruption of Paris.

In another reflection from the same volume, de Beauvoir further marvels at New York’s singular character and medley of complementary contradictions:

In Paris, in Rome, history has permeated the bowels of the ground itself; Paris reaches down into the center of the earth. In New York, even the Battery doesn’t have such deep roots. Beneath the subways, sewers, and heating pipes, the rock is virgin and inhuman. Between this rock and the open sky, Wall Street and Broadway bathe in the shadows of the giant buildings; this morning they belong to nature. The little black church with its cemetery of flat paving stones is as unexpected and touching in the middle of Broadway as a crucifix on a wild ocean beach.

In a 1934 letter to her lifelong friend and then-lover Henry Miller, found in A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin & Henry Miller, 1932–1953 ( public library ), Anaïs Nin echoes de Beauvoir’s affection for the city:

I’m in love with N.Y. It matches my mood. I’m not overwhelmed. It is the suitable scene for my ever ever heightened life. I love the proportions, the amplitude, the brilliance, the polish, the solidity. I look up at Radio City insolently and love it. It is all great, and Babylonian. Broadway at night. Cellophane. The newness. The vitality. True, it is only physical. But it’s inspiring. Just bring your own contents, and you create a sparkle of the highest power. I’m not moved, not speechless. I stand straight, tough, and I meet the impact. I feel the glow and the dancing in everything. The radio music in the taxis, scientific magic, which can all be used lyrically. That’s my last word. Give New York to a poet. He can use it. It can be poetized. Or maybe that’s a mania of mine, to poetize. I live lightly, smoothly, actively, ears and eyes wide open, alert, oiled! I feel a kind of exhilaration and the tempo is like that of my blood. I’m at once beyond, over and in New York, tasting it fully.

But five years later, Nin grows diametrically disillusioned and writes in her diary — which also gave us her timeless wisdom on anxiety and love , how emotional excess fuels creativity , and embracing the unfamiliar — she contrasts New York to her native Paris:

In Paris, when entering a room, everyone pays attention, seeks to make you feel welcome, to enter into conversation, is curious, responsive. Here it seems everyone is pretending not to see, hear, or look too intently. The faces reveal no interest, no responsiveness. Overtones are missing. Relationships seem impersonal and everyone conceals his secret life, whereas in Paris it was the exciting substance of our talks, intimate revelations and sharing of experience.

In another diary entry a year later, she revisits the contrast with growing fervor:

New York is the very opposite of Paris. People’s last concern is with intimacy. No attention is given to friendship and its development. Nothing is done to soften the harshness of life itself. There is much talk about the ‘world,’ about millions, groups, but no warmth between human beings. They persecute subjectivity, which is a sense of inner life; an individual’s concern with growth and self-development is frowned upon. Subjectivity seems to be in itself a defect. No praise or compliments are given, because praise is politeness and all politeness is hypocrisy. Americans are proud of telling you only the bad. The ‘never-talk-about-yourself’ taboo is linked with the most candid, unabashed self-seeking, and selfishness.

In a September 22, 1917, letter to her mother and sister — found in the same superb out-of-print anthology that gave us the poet’s reflections on the love of music , her playfully lewd self-portrait , and the story of how she was almost banned from her own graduation — 18-year-old Edna St. Vincent Millay grumbles with her signature wry wit:

There is no air on 5th Avenue, there is nothing but oil & old gasoline & new gasoline — there is never one breath of pure air — nothing but gas, gas, gas — but people who live in New York walk there to get air. Probably they do get it — all of it — & that’s why it blows to me so scummily.

She later adds:

There is a beautiful anonymity about life in New York.

Three years later, in another letter to her mother, Millay grows exasperated with the city:

New York life is getting too congested for me — too many people; I get no time to work.

Washington Irving shares Millay’s frustration with the city’s density. How endearing and comic to consider that, in this 1847 letter to his sister who hadn’t seen her native city in over forty years, he compares New York (current population: 8.3 million) to Frankfurt (current population: 691,000) in an effort to capture its bustling expansiveness:

I often think what a strange world you would find yourself in, if you could revisit your native place, and mingle among your relatives. New York, as you knew it, was a mere corner of the present huge city ; and that corner is all changed, pulled to pieces, burnt down and rebuilt — all but our little native nest in William street, which still retains some of its old features, though those are daily altering. I can hardly realize that, within my term of life, this great crowded metropolis, so full of life, bustle, noise, show, and splendor, was a quiet little city of some fifty or sixty thousand inhabitants. It is really now one of the most racketing cities in the world, and reminds me of one of the great European cities (Frankfort, for instance) in the time of an annual fair. Here it is a fair almost all the year round. For my part, I dread the noise and turmoil of it, and visit it but now and then, preferring the quiet of my country retreat; which shows that the bustling time of life is over with me, and that I am settling down into a sober, quiet, good-for-nothing old gentleman.

Unlike Irving, E. B. White found in the city’s exuberant turmoil cause for awe rather than distress. In Here Is New York ( public library ), one of the best books about Gotham , he captures the city’s vibrant whimsy in his breathlessly beautiful prose:

A poem compresses much in a small space and adds music, thus heightening its meaning. The city is like poetry: it compresses all life, all races and breeds, into a small island and adds music and the accompaniment of internal engines. The island of Manhattan is without any doubt the greatest human concentrate on earth, the poem whose magic is comprehensible to millions of permanent residents but whose full meaning will always remain elusive.

26-year-old Susan Sontag writes in an 1959 diary entry, found in Reborn: Journals and Notebooks, 1947–1963 ( public library ), which also gave us her meditations on art , marriage , life , and the four people any great writer must be :

The ugliness of New York. But I do like it here … In NY sensuality completely turns into sexuality — no objects for the senses to respond to, no beautiful river, houses, people. Awful smells of the street, and dirt … Nothing except eating, if that, and the frenzy of the bed. Adjusting to the city vs. making the city answer better to the self.

Also in New York Diaries , Randy Cohen notes Gotham’s curious customs, which take on a wholly different context than their practice anywhere else:

New York is not Mexico City, but twice a year, we parents at the 96th Street school-bus stop collect money for Mr. R., the driver. “You have to give, or he’ll drop your kid in Times Square alone,” someone jokes. And it is a joke. New York is not Lagos, Mr. R. is a responsible man, and the money is a gift.

But perhaps most poignant and timeless of all is this meta-meditation on writing about New York from The Journal of Joyce Carol Oates ( public library ). In a diary entry dated April 3, 1976, the celebrated author and literary sage reflects:

The impulse of every writer is to create a fictional world that represents the “real” world in abbreviated, heightened, poetic fashion. … Philip Roth’s New York is his own no less than Beckett’s interior landscapes are his own. Otherwise there would be little pleasure in art: it would be a mere attempt at reportage.

New York, to Oates, is the realest and most pleasurable of worlds. In another diary entry several weeks later, she rejoices in the city’s imminent promise:

Leaving tomorrow for my parents’, then to NYC… Poetry reading Monday evening. Then: freedom to explore New York. Our favorite city. The only city.

After the “totally enjoyable, many-faceted visit,” Oates captures New York’s polarizing mesmerism:

The undeniable attraction of that city: its pulse, atmosphere, people. (NYC is much maligned by the rest of the country out of resentment, one suspects. There is only one city in the United States and the others are envious.)

10 Reasons Why I Love Living In New York

New York. Alicia Keys described it in her epic song as concrete jungle where dreams are made of , and I can’t agree more.

I grew up in Israel and lived there all my life but I have always had a dream to live abroad and see how life would be in a new country. As a traveler, my passion is exploring new cultures and seeing how people live in other places. Thus, moving to another country and experiencing that on my own was a step I had to make.

When the opportunity to move to New York came up, I couldn’t say no. We packed our stuff, our dog, and ourselves, got on a plane, and landed in the big apple. Excited and overwhelmed, we started our new life here. It’s been five years that I am living in New York, and I love every moment.

I have to admit that not every day is easy and there are also reasons for not living in such a big city like New York. The monthly rent I pay for my apartment and the real estate prices, in general, are extremely high. I tend to spend more than I would if I had lived in a place without so many temptations. However, for me, the pros exceed the cons, and this is what I am going to explain. Here are my ten reasons for why I love living in New York:

The Landmarks

New York is probably the most famous city in the world. Millions of people come here from all corners of the globe to visit and experience it. The Landmarks of the city are easily recognized, even by kids, as they appear in so many movies, tv shows, songs, and images.

Take The Statue of Liberty for example. Its origins are from Paris, France , however it is a very well known symbol not only of New York but also of the American dream. In my first job in the city, I was able to see the Statue of Liberty out of my office window. Ain’t that amazing?

Living in New York and walking in its streets allows me to see these amazing landmarks all the time. Even if some are purely for tourists and local New Yorkers try to avoid them, like Times Square, it is extremely exciting having them around the corner. They add a unique charm to everyday activities, like going to work, shopping, hanging out on the weekends, and others.

Living In New York Is Like Living In A Movie Scene

Not just the landmarks of New York are well-known from movies and TV shows. The streets and avenues, yellow cabs, the fire escape ladders outside of the buildings, Central Park and other city parks – you probably have seen them in one movie or another.

Thousands of movies and shows were shot in the streets of New York City throughout the years. We all have some kind of a picture of New York in our heads, even if we are not aware of that. It makes every building in the West Village looks like the one from Friends , and every skyscraper in Downtown looks like the office of Harvey from Suits .

Since I moved to New York, I saw at least a dozen of film sets in the streets I was walking on. I was able to catch sight of some famous or semi-famous actors and celebs on the streets, and I can easily say that living in New York is like living in a movie scene.

The Glamour of Broadway Shows

Broadway is what every theater wants to be. It is glamour, drama, music, lights, and colors – all on one stage. Honestly, I haven’t seen so many Broadway shows and I wish they weren’t so expensive so I could see more. However, every show that I did see was an amazing experience.

Back in Israel, I used to go to the theater once every month or two, and I loved it, but there’s something different when it’s Broadway. The excitement begins with the purchase of the ticket. While there’s no need to over-dress, entering the theater halls, with their classy and royalty design, makes me feel fancy. Then, after I find my seat I have my food and drinks routine, which is part of the experience. Hopefully, the drinks are served in the show’s branded cups, plus pretzels and chips, and I am all set.

When the lights go down and the show starts, I am drawn into a different world, connecting with the characters and their story for the next two hours. After the show ends and everybody’s making their way out, I always ask myself the same two questions: What happens to the characters next? and How would my life look like if I was an actor on Broadway? For both, there’s never an answer.

The Diversity Of People and Cultures

My home country, Israel, is a country of immigrants from many parts of the world. However, only when I moved to New York, I realized the true meaning of diversity, and how wide it can be.

New York is like a microcosmos of the world. I don’t know if I am exaggerating to say that there’s probably at least one person from every country here in the city. From Latin Americans and the Caribbean to Europeans, Africans, and Asians, even from countries that you might not even heard of.

You walk in the streets and hear multiple languages. In your workplace, you get to speak to and be friends with people whose roots are from so many different parts of the world. You can visit neighborhoods with unique characteristics that make you feel like you are traveling to a different country.

Living in a city like New York with such diversity is one of the best things I could wish for myself. I have learned to acknowledge cultural difference, so much more than before. Conversing with people from different origins, even if it’s just small talk with a cab driver, is something I would probably not have done at that level anywhere else. I understand the true meaning of respecting others, regardless of their skin color, the language they speak, their sexuality, and the clothes they wear. This is how we make the world a better place.

The culinary scene in New York is one of the best in the world, but I’ll start with a confession – at first, I thought it’s not that big of a deal. It took me a while to learn why that statement is true.

Yes, there are Michelin starred restaurants and world-famous chefs who introduce the special inventions from their kitchens here in New York. But that’s not what makes the city so special for me. When I think about the culinary uniqueness of New York, I take into consideration the fact that you can find here EVERYTHING. I mean EVERY kind of food you can think of, is probably available in New York.

You can find the most sophisticated dishes in 5 stars restaurants or the basic yet delicious plates in low-cost food stands. Street food and worldwide cuisines mix together in amazing food markets, grocery stores, and delis. New York City is heaven for steak lovers, sea-food explorers, vegetarians, vegans , paleo, kosher, halal, and what’s not.

The best thing is that after five years in the city, I still discover new places, new cuisines, and new dishes, and I love it!

If there’s something that local New Yorkers like to do when the sun comes out and the days are warmer, is to sit in one of the many parks of the city. Since beaches are not easily reachable for people who live in the city, the parks are the perfect alternative.

Central Park, the biggest of them all, gets super packed in the hot days of summer. Coming here to hang out on the grass or having a picnic with friends are some of my favorite summer activities. You can also see locals celebrating birthdays or exercising, while tourists come to enjoy the parks’ trails and statues. Who wouldn’t want to take a relaxing break from the busy streets of the city?

But not only in summer. Bryant Park behind the library, on 40th street, is a great example of a transformation a park can have from summer to winter. In the summer, people come here for Yoga classes, watch movies or watch Broadway actors performing for free. In the winter, a huge ice rink is built on the grass and the winter-village comes to life with a fun holiday market, which I enjoy visiting every year.

Every Park has its own vibes and attracts different people. A walk in the park, any of them, is one of my favorite things to do in New York. It’s a great way to see the people of the city, that are not always in a rush, like often seen on TV.

Living in New York Is Never Boring With Endless Activities

It doesn’t matter if it’s a freezing winter or even snowing, or if it’s summer and the humidity kills you – It never gets boring in New York.

Activities In The Winter

I arrived to live in New York in wintertime. The excitement from being in the big apple didn’t let me stay home too much, so with a new warm coat and second pair of socks, I was out to explore.

The holiday market in Bryant Park is colorful, cheerful, and so inviting (did I mention it’s my favorite?). Watching the decorated houses for Christmas in Dyker Heights is a must-do at least once. The ice rinks that pop up in the parks and Rockefeller Center are magical. And for someone who grew up in a city that has no snow, seeing Central Park all white after the snow for the first time is a one of a kind experience.

I also enjoy keeping myself warm in one of the museums of the city, or by visiting any of the new interactive exhibits (like Color Factory or Artechouse ) that keep opening all the time.

Activities in The Spring and Summer

When it gets warmer outside, more things open up and new attractions become available. I usually say that this is when the city comes to life, though it doesn’t mean it was dead before, it’s just the spring festivity that fills the air.

The cherry blossom in the Brooklyn botanical gardens is a marvelous sight in the spring. Watching a free Shakespeare In The Park in Central Park is a fun summer experience. The Smorgasburg food market in Williamsburg, Brooklyn , is one of my favorites and I visit it a few times every year. Grabbing a drink in one of the rooftop bars is an amazing way to spend the evening while watching the city skyline from above.

The parks are amazing to spend time in, and a brunch picnic on a sunny Saturday is a great way to start the weekend. Finding a shaded spot under the trees, and laying on the grass after a good meal is the best getaway within the city.

Fall Activities

The Fall season has its own uniqueness, which I learned to appreciate only recently. The city puts on a costume, preparing for Halloween and then for Thanksgiving, while it is covered with beautiful fall colors all around.

Pumpkins and skeletons decorate almost every house, and a walk in the streets of Greenwich Village or Upper West Side is like walking in a theme park, just without the rollercoasters. The Halloween parade is the highlight of the festivals, as everyone’s outside with their crazy costumes – kids to adults, they all have fun. The famous Macy’s Thanksgiving parade comes about a month after and the city again feels festive and fun.

The Crazy Nightlife

When the night comes to New York, the city reveals a new layer of itself. Even after a long day at work, or exploring the city on a weekend, the temptations of the city’s nightlife are too strong to refuse. Luckily, living in New York City allows me to experience many of those.

From small bars to mega clubs, everything is available in New York, and every person can find what they like. Sport bars, Irish pubs, Rooftop bars, speakeasies, wine cellars, gay bars, Jazz clubs, piano bars, live music – and more. Some neighborhoods are popular for different audiences, such as Greenwich Village for students (close to NYU), Williamsburg and Bushwick in Brooklyn for hipsters, Hell’s Kitchen and Chelsea for the gay community, etc. Whatever hat I put on, I can enjoy it.

The clubs of the city host world-famous DJs and the parties provide nights to remember. The Avant Gardner and House Of Yes (both in Brooklyn) are already part of the city’s must-visit places. Tao Downtown and the Marquee are two of the best clubs in Chelsea, Manhattan.

Some nights in New York ended when the sun was already rising, and others were short and I was home by midnight. I have probably been to less than 10% of the bars and clubs of the city, but I know that whatever mood I am in, I can find the best environment to spend the night. That’s the fun thing about living in New York, and the opportunities never end.

Discovering New York’s Museums

With more than 80 museums in the city, a long time is needed to visit them all. That’s why living in New York is great for discovering more of them with no rush. I enjoy exploring museums’ halls. I enjoy educating myself on things that are within my areas of interest while also learning new things, and New York offers a wide range of options.

Here, I can see works of art made by the most famous artists in the world, or enjoy exhibitions of recently graduated young artists. Only in New York, I learned about the history of our world and humanity, and the life of Native Americans, and the immigrants who came to America, and the Holocaust – all in one city. The big museums also offer temporary exhibits, so visiting them more than once doesn’t feel like seeing the same things.

The city encourages people to visit the museums and some of them offer free entrance on specific days and hours. I experienced that once, at the MoMa, though I can’t say it was the best experience. The museum was packed with people who wanted to take the opportunity and save money, just like me. However, it was great to see how this initiative attracted so many people to come and enjoy what the museum has to offer.

The first museums I visited as soon as I moved to the city were the Met and the National History Museum. From my list of the best museums in New York , these are my top two recommendations for every person – a local or a visitor.

New York is Inspiration

There’s something about New York City that never ceases to inspire me. The USA is called the land of unlimited possibilities , and for me, New York is where this sentence becomes a reality. After all, I share this city with some of the richest and most successful people in our world. When I walk in the streets and look up at the skyscrapers, or at the beautiful skyline from far (my rooftop in Brooklyn has a fantastic view), I think about the people who had a dream and made it true. That’s what it’s all about!

What I love about New York is that it has a place for everyone to dream big. Suit and tie lawyers and free spirit artists, investment bankers, or social media influencers – they are all here. When you ride the subway, the person next to you might be a millionaire businessman or a famous Hollywood actor. On the other hand, it can be a student on his way to school, who hasn’t even started paying his student loan but already dreams big about his new startup.

Yes, it is true that living in New York also has its price. The city is one of the most expensive in the world, and it’s not easy to just come here and start from scratch. I was lucky to have the opportunity to do it, and I am grateful.

New York shows me that my ambitions and hard work can pay. My goal is not necessarily to live in the tallest residential building near Central Park, however seeing this building touches the clouds tells me that the sky is my only limit, and it’s my task to get there. New York is just here to help me.

Final Thoughts

I love New York and I love living in New York. I don’t think this place is perfect. Actually, it’s far from being perfect. However, living in such a big city has taught me a lot about myself and about who and what I want to be. In these five years that I have been living in New York, I got so many insights about life, people, cultures, friendships, and family. In some cases, I learned more in these five years than I had throughout my life before. New York was one dream that came true, and it allows me to keep on dreaming. Now it’s up to me to make the rest of them come true.

Sukhna Lake – My Favourite Spot

Sukhna Lake is my favorite place in the city. Every day, the place becomes more happening. Mornings here are completely different from evenings. It’s peaceful and serene in the morning because the air is fresh. There is no better place to unwind and relax. Evenings are busy with boaters and snackers taking advantage of the lake’s amenities.

Children have also been provided with electronic swings. During the evening hours, the place is bustling with activity. It’s a great place to go out with friends and family. Both early morning and evening are convenient times for me to visit the location. Whether it is peaceful, quiet or crowded, I love it all.

My city is more than just my home. It is my lifeline. I would like to live here for the rest of my life. Any other city would not be as peaceful and happy for me.

I moved with my father to a new city when I was a young child. We have moved as many as four times since I was a child. Until I moved to Jaipur, I never thought there would be one place I could truly call home. We moved to this place less than two years ago, but it feels like home already.

When you travel for a living, you get asked a lot of questions as you bounce from one hostel to another. The top one: what’s your favorite country?

The second most asked question: what’s your favorite city?

I’ve spent a long time traveling the world and have been to hundreds upon hundreds of cities in the world. There are so many that I love for many different reasons – some for art, some for history, some for the food, most for the people.

But, to me, the ones that stand out the most are the ones where I feel most at home. They are places I visit and feel connected too. Their energy and my energy match. I move around them with ease, I feel at one with the culture, and tempo of the city.

I think to myself “Yeah, I could live here.” Not just visit but live.

And, when I think that, then I know I’ve found a special place.

So what are my favorite cities in the world? Where are the places I feel that way? They are here:

My 14 Favorite Cities

• New York City

1. Amsterdam

The fast-paced life, friendly locals, easy access to the rest of Europe , picturesque canals, and stunning architecture keep me coming back. Plus, it being Amsterdam and all, there are tons of weird and quirky things to see and do there too !

In some ways, Amsterdam reminds me of my hometown of Boston , which might be why I love it so much. The brick buildings, fast-moving people, austere vibe. It feels like home.

Paris is beautiful, vibrant, and filled with tasty food and history. Being here is like being in a real-life romantic comedy. I love the city so much I even moved there for a good chunk of 2019. It really does live up to all the hype, especially when you move away from the tourist areas and into the local places more.

Favorite activity: Picking up some good food at the market and having a picnic.

Bangkok, it turns out, is an easy city to live in — there’s lots to do, plenty of events, great bars, wonderful food (nothing beats Thai street food), and even more wonderful people. It’s just a bad tourist city. There’s just not a lot to do there for a tourist. It’s a city you live in.

Living in Bangkok showed me that looks can be deceiving and that there is more to a city than what you see on the surface. You just need to be willing to look a little deeper.

And, when you do, you always find something special.

4. Stockholm

I think this city is one of the most picturesque I have ever seen. The reds and greens of the buildings have an Old World charm that rivals cities like Prague , and during the fall, the changing leaves only highlight that beauty.

Stockholm is also very historic, with a high quality of life, and the Swedes in the city are super friendly and welcoming. It’s not a cheap city to visit, but it’s worth every penny!

Favorite activity: Getting lost in the maze of historic streets in Gamla Stan.

5. New York City

I love NYC. It is the heart of the world to me. It is a non-stop place where you come to make it in the world. You can always find something to do, world-class food, people from all walks of life, and just a hustler vibe.

I spent close to five years living there and visit at least once a month (when I can).

It is the city you see in the movies.

Favorite activity: Walking the High Line and cooling off with drinks at the Grey Mare.

While the winter months here can be brutal, this lakeside city seems to come to life after it emerges from its long and cold winter. Along with its lively atmosphere, the food here is delicious and the architecture is second to none. There’s a vibrant energy during the summertime as everyone is out in the parks, cafes, rooftop bars, on the lake, and watching the Cubs.

Chicago is just awesome.

7. Vancouver

Not only is there incredible nature nearby but there’s a park so big in the middle of the city, I often feel like I am in the center of a forest. Add in a vibrant food and art scene, and Vancouver is definitely a world-class city. It’s not a cheap city to live in, but that’s the price for all the amazing things Vancouver has to offer!

8. Queenstown

The city and surrounding area are postcard-perfect (much like the rest of the country! I would jump on a plane and head back there right now if I could.

Not only that, but Perth is the perfect jumping-off spot to see the western Australian parks and natural sites, and it’s also close to hip Freemantle, which is home to my favorite Australian brewery: Little Creatures. I find it much more personal than other towns in Australia .

10. Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the best cities in the world for foodies. I always stop in when I’m in Asia and stuff my face with some of the best dumplings in the world. The city is busy and dense (it’s one of the most densely populated places on the planet) but it has a fun nightlife and tons of activities to keep you entertained , from markets to temples to nearby hikes outside the city.

While the city offers an interesting mix between eastern and western cultures, what really sets Hong Kong apart from other massive, dense cities is just how clean and well-organized it is. Getting around is a breeze, making it an easy and fun place to explore for a few days — or more!

11. Reykjavik

Reykjavik has tons of cozy cafes, wild clubs, cute architecture, and friendly pubs. It’s tiny, yet you can easily spend a few days here and not get bored (especially if you’re a night owl. Icelanders love to party).

Fortunately, as the tourism industry grows, there are more and more free (or cheap) things to do in the city . And with Icelandair offering free stopovers on flights between North America and Europe, it’s never been easier to visit this charming Scandinavia capital.

But it wasn’t until last year when I spent a month in the city that I really “got” it. I understood why people loved it. There was a charming sophistication to the place.

Strolling the streets of the city, enjoying the markets, taking in the history of the place, laying in the park, and having a pint outside a pub? Heaven.

Paris will always have my heart but London comes close.

Favorite activity : Visiting as many museums as I can and then drinking at a pub.

The city has everything I like: history, Mezcal, and food. Oaxaca is one of the gastronomic centers of Mexico and was the place I fell most in love with during my visit to the country. It’s safe, the people are wonderful, the buildings are beautiful, and the food…did I mention the food? It’s out of this world.

Within seconds of landing here, I knew I belonged. I could easily live here I love it so much.

Favorite activity : Visiting the mezcalerías.
