Meaning of Speech Bubbles in Comics

The visual tool used to represent the characters’ speech, dialogue, or conversation in the comics is known as a “bubble”. The meaning of speech bubbles in comics will be addressed, emphasizing their proper use and comic grammar.

What are speech bubbles, different kinds of speech bubble, normal speech, electronic devices, extended speech, some insights, what do you think.

One of the most important parts of comics is the character dialogue. It is one of the  features of comics  and it is as valuable as the images themselves. They are a great support for the narrative within the comics.

As part of the visual language of comics, bubbles are small expressions in themselves, with their own meaning. They can communicate in a situation or context. Therefore, it is important to know the meaning of speech bubbles in comics to know how to express emotions in a dialogue, nature, the source of the speech, and sounds, for instance.

Certainly, speech bubbles are usually added after the editing and photography of the images. However, at this point in  the process of making a comic , you must have the text included inside the bubbles. The extension of the text has to be set during the scriptwriting process, as well as the type of bubble to be used. Therefore, knowing the meaning of speech bubbles in comics ensures a better choice of each one to correctly communicate the message you want to convey.

Creative Process of Making Comics

There are different kinds of speech bubbles because there are different ways that a character could dialogue or communicate a message in a comic. There are some examples:

The “basic” bubble — which often has an oval shape — is used for normal character speech. The “tail” of the bubble should generally point towards the speaker, particularly towards his mouth or the area that produces the sound.

Vertical bubbles can be used when there is not enough horizontal space.  Therefore, this provides flexibility in distributing the bubbles within the panel.

Most of the time, this kind of bubble has an oval shape. However, it can have different shapes.

To express a thought, an idea, or that one is daydreaming, the bubble with a cloud shape is the right one. Besides, the shape can also be oval, like the basic one. But its tail is formed by a group of circles, or ellipses. For example, there are 2 or 3 circles.

Besides, this bubble serves to communicate what animals, plants, or things cannot say, as they “do not talk”. For example, the meow of a cat or the bark of a dog could be represented by onomatopoeias. However, to express their internal dialogue, you can use the cloud bubble.

Rectangular bubbles without a tail are known as captions. They express what the narrator says in such a way that they support the course of the story. In other words, this space describes, in words, a given situation that would not be attributed to a character. Sometimes they are appreciated as voice-overs. Likewise, they are used for subtitles.

Multi-edged bubbles usually represent screaming or a message out loud, but the screams may have a positive or negative connotation. For example, the character is urging his team to try harder. However, the same bubble can be used to insult or express abuse.

Depending on the connotation of the message, either negative or positive, the text in its content may have variations in style: bold, larger, or different colors, for instance.

On the other hand, this bubble can also vary in shape, depending on the intensity of the emotion to be expressed and the style of the comics.

This is used to represent words or sounds coming from an electronic device such as a television, telephone, radio, or microphone. The tail of the bubble points towards the device, and it looks like lightning. In addition, it can be used for robot and hologram dialogs.

Whispers are presented with a dashed-lined bubble. However, it also represents saying a secret or speaking in a very low voice. Certainly, the shapes can also vary for greater flexibility.

The wavy bubble indicates that the speaker is suffering from physical weakness. Likewise, it indicates that a character is exhausted, semi-unconscious, or about to faint. So, its wavy shape reflects the weakness of the character’s voice.

• If the speech or dialogue is too long or a pause is required, the text is distributed into extended speech bubbles.

Moreover, the extended speech bubble has variations. Dialogues can be interleaving but use a bridge that links the speech bubbles of the same character.

• Speech bubbles represent the characters’ dialogue or thoughts.
• Normal speech is often represented by an oval-shaped bubble.
• To express a thought or an idea, the bubble with a cloud shape is the right one.
• Rectangular bubbles without a tail are known as captions.
• Multi-edged bubbles usually represent screaming or sending a message out loud.
• The bubble whose tail looks like a flash of lightning is used to represent words or sounds coming from an electronic device.
• Whispers are presented with a dashed-lined bubble.
• The wavy bubble indicates that the speaker is suffering from physical weakness.

Comics are not just a piece of entertainment for children and teenagers. This massive medium is appreciated and understood by adults as well. Marketing agencies and advertising companies have understood this and have started to use it to attract potential customers.

In conclusion, the narrative power of comics can be exploited in graphic design to communicate ideas interestingly and differently. Learning the meaning of speech bubbles in comics is one of the first steps. If graphic designers want to take advantage of the full potential of comics, it is necessary to understand the concepts and features of comics and their different genres. It is also necessary to follow the process of creating a comic in order to develop a story through this format.

Introduction: Bubble Talk: Turn Your Speech Into Bubbles!

A soap bubble is ephemeral. It lasts only for a brief moment and quickly disappears even by a light breeze. The bubble's symbolic meaning as a metaphor of human's fragile and insubstantial life was first coined by a Roman writer Varro in the 1st century BC. Also, in 1572 the philosopher Erasmus reintroduced the Latin expression ''Homo bulla'' (''man is a bubble'') in his collection of proverbs, Adagia . This special characteristics of bubble attracted lots of artists in 17th century and also other periods. A paint, ' Cupid Blowing a Soap Bubble (1634) ', by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn is one of examples. Metaphor of bubble continues to the modern century and a modern artist, Thomb Kubli , also uses bubbles as a media to transfer invisible and intangible sounds to visible but fleeting form in a 3D space.

The attractiveness of bubble might be coming from its ironical representation of our transient life which reminds us of the value of our existence at a moment and makes us seize the present .

Step 1: Inspiration

A word and shape of 'bubble' were used as a graphic convention describing a imaginary form of speech and thought of characters in comic books. Inspired from those metaphors of bubble, I introduce an interactive art/ toy project representing the ephemeral and intangible properties of human's communication.

Once speech is shouted out from a speaker, the sound of speech never lasts and it lost its meaning unless there is a listener. Even if the speech is heard by someone, the message will be forgotten as time goes. The shapeless, intangible, and invisible speech is transformed into a semi-tangible yet still insubstantial form of visible bubble. To present this art concept, I created a bubble machine that provides person-to-person and person-to-space interaction.

The machine has a iris mechanism that varies its outlet size reacting to your speech pattern as if it tries to speak something. Once the participant pauses, a fan inside of the machine generates airflow toward a bubble membrane created on the iris outlet and transforms it to various sizes of bubble.

The floating bubble represents the subtle state of a message from interpersonal communications that lies in the middle of real and digital world. Also, it creates a few seconds of delay until it explodes, through which we like to say that it is never possible to have a real-time synchronized communication between two people even in a same space due to the limit of human perceptions.

I'd like to invite all of you guys to be an artist through playful interactions with the 'Bubble Talk' machine! :D

• Iris Mechanism

Inspired by the amazing great work The CNC Bubble Iris by Gordon Kirkwood , this project introduces the way to build a bubble iris machine in smaller and mobile size using 3D printer and Laser cutter, and shows you to make it interactive to your speech to have fun!

As Gordon Kirkwood well explained in his instructables post, the core mechanism of the machine is iris using strings.

Step 2: Materials You Need

Here is the link for the materials I used to build a iris bubble machine.

I used to a laser cutter to cut the acrylic sheet and a 3D printer to print some components (bearing mounts, servo mount, pulley etc.) For the outer structure components, I used Form2 with Clear V4 material.

Step 3: Schematics and 3D Files

• PCBs: DC Motor Driver, Microphone amplifier.

At the time I was building this project, in my lab I didn't have a microphone amplifying board and DC Motor driver but an Electret Microphone , several electronic components, so I designed a simple board and milled using CNC machine (Roland Modela MDX20 CNC Mill) with copper board

In case you want to mill your own boards, here I also attached the EAGLE schematics and image file for CNC route. Or you can just use the product from Adafruit or any other provider.

Step 4: fabrication.

• 3D Printing and Laser Cutting

To meet the purpose of an art toolkit for everyone, I tried to use easily accessible material and fabrication equipment. I laser-cut a acrylic sheet to create a structure of the Bubble Talk machine as shown on figures above. Other parts that requires strength and certain 3D shapes are 3D printed using a customer level filament-fused (Sindoh 3dwox) or stereolithography 3D printer (e.g. Form 2).

• Soap Bubble Liquid Recipes

In the Soap Bubble Wiki Page , it introduces variety of different bubble soap liquid recipes.

I followed the Mike's "Gooey Mix" as Gordon recommended on his post too.

You can also find all the product link for making this liquid in my material list sheet I shared.

Step 5: Assembly

Once you have all the 3D printed parts and acrylic sheet cuts, and assembly components (bearing, cotton thread, spring, fan, MCU, etc.) Follow the process as shown on the pictures above.

• Horizontal (3 ea) and vertical (6 ea) bearing assembly with 3D printed mounts (purple parts on the picture)
• Fix the bearing mounts with bearings on the acrylic sheet for the front face structure
• Insert the white acrylic rings that can be rolling around the bearing smoothly
• Fix the pump and servo motor on the front face structure. (servo should be mounted on the 3D printed servo mount first)
• Assemble 3 pulleys on the front structure (it has three holes matching with the pulley's inner hole diameter)
• Cut the cotton string to be 3 threads and tie them with spring
• Fix the other end of spring on the 3 points and make the thread go around the pulley. (The spring has a role of maintaining the enough tension on each string (always should be tight)
• Tie the string ends to the white acrylic ring's hole. Make sure to have the 3 strings are crossing each other forming a triangle. All the thread should contact each other on the 3 points of triangle.
• Fix the servo pulley (blue part on the picture) on the servo's shaft
• Circle around the pulley with a fishing line about 2 cycle, and make a cross at the end (The fishing line connects the motion of servo and acrylic ring working as a driving belt.
• The each end of the fishing line should go round the white acrylic ring and fixed on it with a spring (this spring works as tension keeper)
• Cut a copper tube and connect it with the pump's outlet to guide the soap liquid around the strings
• Assemble a DC fan in the middle of the back structure of the machine
• Put the outer structure (3D printed) around the back structure and glue it using a epoxy glue
• Cover the top with the front face structure assembled with servo, pump and strings.

Connect the DC motor driver with the pump and DC fan. Connect the microphone with amplifying board and servo to microcontroller (e.g. teensy, Arduino, etc.)

Step 6: Test and Have Fun!

Now it's all assembled and ready to be run!

The input for the machine is your speech and the output is opening of iris creating a soap membrane and running of fan to blow it out.

Make sure all the power is correctly connected, check the polarity before run the machine.

Depending on the fan's speed and the iris size (soap membrane surface area), the size of bubble and its emission motion are varied. I'd recommend to run several times to tune the parameter of fan speed and run timing in relation with the servo actuation for iris mechanism open/close.

Sometimes, the machine makes very funny motions like a teddy bear snoring with bubble coming out from his nose.

The material list I shared also includes the parts needed for making the machine mobile with Lipo battery, so try with that and playing with it walking around outside.

Using Bubbles in Speech Therapy to Build Articulation & Language

When it comes to childhood memories, I remember spending many afternoons playing with bubbles. There is just something magical about bubbles that kids enjoy. Bubbles are one of those toys that are great to bring out on a spring or summer day. There are so many great ways SLPs can use bubbles in speech therapy.

Bubbles are also near to my heart because they are affordable for SLPs on a budget! This post is filled with all the ways you can utilize bubbles in your speech room. 

Where Can You Buy Bubbles for Your Speech Room?

Buy them on Amazon. If you want containers that are no spill, then here are mini ones (Amazon affiliate link) that hold two ounces of bubbles. Or, you can get a bigger container from Fubble s (Amazon affiliate link) that allows you to have multiple wands in the container. Walmart and Target are always my local go-tos for finding bubbles.

It is super esy, and it’s an affordable way to have extra wands on hand for your mixed groups. 

Visual Supports For Blowing Bubbles in Speech Therapy

Using Bubbles in Speech Therapy With Preschool Children

Bubbles can be used to target so many skills! Listed below are some of my favorite ways to utilize bubbles.

• Turn-taking and waiting: Students can practice basic social skill requests and comments while playing with the bubbles.
• Play following directions Simon Says: Work on using basic concepts or multi-step directions with bubbles, such as, “Clap your hands and then blow a bubble.”

Creating Speech Bubbles in Premiere Pro using Images

Speech bubbles are a great way to add visual elements to your videos, making it clear who is speaking or conveying important information. In this tutorial, we will walk you through the steps of creating speech bubbles in Premiere Pro. We will Show you how to use images to Create both black and white speech bubbles and how to customize them to fit your needs. Let's get started!

1. Introduction Speech bubbles are an effective way to communicate dialogue in videos. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create speech bubbles using images in Premiere Pro.

2. Creating a Speech Bubble Using an Image To create a speech bubble, you will first need an image of a speech bubble. You can find speech bubble images for free by searching on Google. Once you have an image, import it into Premiere Pro.

3. Removing the White Background If the speech bubble image you imported has a white background, you will need to get rid of it. One way to do this is by changing the blend mode. Select the image, go to Effects Controls, and under Opacity, change the blend mode from Normal to Darken.

4. Inverting the Color To create a white speech bubble, you can invert the color of the image. Add the Invert effect from the Video Effects menu and adjust the opacity. The image will now have a black background with a white speech bubble.

5. Creating a White Transparent Speech Bubble in Premiere Pro Instead of searching for a white speech bubble image, you can create one directly in Premiere Pro. Go to Photoshop, choose the Custom Shape tool, and select the speech bubble shape. Customize the fill and stroke options to your liking.

6. Creating a Speech Bubble in Photoshop You can also create a speech bubble in Photoshop. Open Photoshop and choose the Custom Shape tool. Select the speech bubble shape and adjust the fill and stroke options. Resize and rotate the shape as needed.

7. Editing the Speech Bubble in Photoshop To edit the speech bubble in Photoshop, you can resize, rotate, or change the color of the shape. You can also flip the shape horizontally if needed. Remember to save the image as a Photoshop file or PNG for later use.

8. Importing the Speech Bubble into Premiere Pro In Premiere Pro, import the speech bubble image you created in Photoshop. Merge all layers if prompted. Once imported, you can drop the image onto your timeline and adjust its position and size.

9. Customizing the Speech Bubble in Premiere Pro You can further customize the speech bubble in Premiere Pro. Double-click on the image in the Composition window to edit it. You can change the size, position, and even the color of the speech bubble.

10. Adding Text to the Speech Bubble in Premiere Pro To add text to the speech bubble, use the text tool in Premiere Pro's title tool. Create a new title and write your text within the speech bubble. You can update the text throughout the video while keeping the same speech bubble.

Blizzards most disappointed fan (they keep going).

The fact that the messages are coded to stay on-screen is probably the selling feature for me. I am struggling really hard with the MV equivalent because I often have treasure chests near the map-edges and the messages would always go over the visible screen. So I had to make all treasure popups have a fixed position on the screen for continuity sake. So it's great to see that this issue is resolved for MZ, for what its worth atleast. Great work as always, Galv!  

What a classic plugin, I've used your message styles plugins in many of my unfinished VX Ace projects back in the day. Thanks for providing us with one for MZ, I look forward to seeing what else you make in the future.

This is great, I was waiting for the MZ port as I loved it for MV! It doesn't seem to be compatible with the VisuStella Message Core unfortunately. It returns "TypeError Cannot set property 'x' of null" Otherwise it works great!

I have massive respect for you Galv! I'm so happy to see new features with plugins being brought over and am super excited for whatever updates you have planned! ♥ Thank you as always for providing for the community!  

I hope magic shards menu comes back too. Its one of my fav plugins of yours. =/ Atm I try to find out how to code myself in js for mz... But I got no idea where to even look or start x- x I want to make my own plugins at some point. Or learn how to port mv to mz plugins.

I've re-written a bunch of the code and also added: - plugin calls that can change pop message and normal message windowskin and arrow graphics separately during the game. - added ability to add within the \pop tag: a y offset value, windowskin and window arrow graphics. These are used to change just the individual message the tag is in. Updates are all in version 1.3 download found in the link in original post.  

Oh my goodness these updates are super awesome! Great work, you did this so fast. The window changing and y offset is going to work wonders for me since I have big sprites and small sprites in my game. ♥

Mordhau has introduced console and pc crossplay, join the battle in mordhau.

Triternion has officially released a new patch of Mordhau for Xbox and PlayStation that comes with console and PC crossplay for the first time. This patch brings full parity to all platforms and players will finally get to battle against each other regardless of the platform they are using.

Additionally, as a part of the latest patch, the developer has revamped the Horde Mode substantially. This classic game mode was revitalized with revamped maps, inventory system enhancements, and skill tree adjustments. As well as an introduction of new NPC adversaries, and an array of fresh weaponry.

Mordhau is a first-person multiplayer medieval melee game where players engage in intense battles using a variety of weapons. This includes swords, axes, and bows. It features various game modes including team-based skirmishes and free-for-all deathmatches.

The combat system puts a lot of emphasis on skill-based mechanics. This allows players to employ different strikes, blocks, and techniques to outmaneuver and defeat opponents. With its realistic medieval setting and intense combat, this game offers a challenging and immersive gaming experience like never before.
