How to create a slideshow from Google Photos or Google Drive

If your images are in Google Photos or a folder on Google Drive, you have several ways to show a series of these images. Each method allows different degrees of control. For example, not every option lets you control auto-advance timing or play specific music or audio files with specific images. Any of the following options will help you create a slideshow of images.

How to create a slideshow from a Google Photos album in a browser

From a web browser, Google Photos offers a slideshow option. If you share a Google Photos album and allow other people to add photos, this can be a great way to display photos from different people.

To display a Google Photos album as a slideshow, first create an album and add photos. Then, with the album active, select the vertical three-dot menu and choose Slideshow ( Figure A ). The images will auto-advance every five seconds. An on-screen display includes pause, back, and forward controls. To show images in a different sequence, you may adjust the arrangement of the images within the album.

How to create a movie with Google Photos

The Google Photos web and mobile apps (Android and iOS) let you make a movie using photos and/or videos. To create a movie in mobile apps, select the three-dot menu in the upper right, then choose Movie. To create a movie from Google Photos in a browser, select the +Create option (to the right of the photo search box) then choose Movie. Select up to 50 photos and/or videos to include in your movie ( Figure B ). After you’ve selected your images, adjust the slider next to each item to change the on-screen duration of each, if you wish.

Your movie also may include music. You may choose the stock music offered within the app, or select and add your own audio file. Of course, you also may choose the No Music option.

How to select and show images with Chrome OS Gallery

If you use a Chromebook or other Chrome OS devices, the Files app includes a gallery feature with a slideshow option. To access it, open the Files app, which has a white folder with a blue background as an icon, then Ctrl-click on one or more images to select a set.

Right-click when you’re done, then choose Open With Gallery from the options. Wait a moment for the images selected to appear in the Gallery. Next, select the rectangle with an arrow that points to the right (in the upper right corner area) to display the images as a slideshow ( Figure C ). As within the Google Photos app, the images auto-advance every five seconds. You also may choose to pause or select right or left arrows to move through the images.

How to create a slideshow with Google Slides

For more precise control, you might use Google Slides. Although it takes a bit more work to add each of your images to a separate slide, you may find the timing options worth it. Where Google Photos and Chrome OS Gallery slideshows both auto-advance every five seconds, Slides offers auto-advance options of 1 minute or 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes. To enable auto-advance, select Present while in Slides on the web, then choose the sprocket (for settings). Choose Auto-Advance (When Played), then select a timing option ( Figure D ). You also may turn on the Loop option to cycle through the slides until manually stopped.

Google Slides also lets you insert audio on individual slides, with a variety of controls. See the “How to insert audio in Google Slides” section in How to use Google Slides enhancements for presentations for details.

How to make a slideshow with mobile apps

Third-party apps for Android and iOS give you greater control over auto-advance image pacing than Google’s own Photos, Gallery, or Slides options. On iOS devices, SoloSlides ($1.99) lets you select a Google Photos album for your slideshow and specify nearly any auto-advance time you desire. On Android, pFolio ($3.99) includes a slideshow option for Google Photos albums, where gFolio ($3.99) displays images from a folder you choose on Google Drive ( Figure E ).

For precise control over all aspects of images and music, you might turn to your preferred video editing app, such as Adobe Premiere Rush , Apple Clips , iMovie , KineMaster , or LumaFusion , among many others.

How to Make a Google Photos Slideshow with Google Slides

The beauty of a close integration is that we can easily transfer content between multiple services under the same roof. For example, Google Slides may import a photo album directly from Google Photos to create a beautiful slideshow. And that’s what we are heading to do in this article.

This article explains how to make a simple slideshow of your favorite images in Google Photos . Information applies to Google Photos in a web browser. The Google Photos apps for iOS and Android currently don't offer slideshow functionality.

How to Create a Google Photos Slideshow

Here's how to create your simple Google Photos slideshow.

In Google Photos, select Albums in the sidebar and select the album that contains the photos you want in a slideshow.

Alternatively, you can create a new album specifically for your slideshow.

Select the photos you want to appear in the sideshow. Continue making selections until you have chosen all the photos you want to appear in the slideshow. When you choose photos for a slideshow, you can only select from photos in one album.

If you want to show off every photo in an album, bypass selecting specific photos and go straight to the three-dot icon to trigger a slideshow.

Select the three-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Choose Slideshow from the drop-down menu.

The slideshow shows all the chosen images in the album and starts automatically with a 5-second fade between photos.

Viewing a Google Photos Slideshow

While you can choose the photos that appear in a Google Photos slideshow, you can't otherwise customize it. The slideshow starts automatically, and you can't change the amount of time a photo is shown before fading into the next one. You also can't add or change music. All you can do is choose the album and the first photo of the slideshow.

Additionally, you can't change the order of the photos. If you create a new album for your slideshow, then the photos display from oldest to newest no matter what order you use when adding them to the album. You can't share your slideshow directly. You can show it off on a device that has Google Photos, or cast it to a Chromecast to show off your photos on a TV, but those are the only options.

This means that if you want a slideshow with all the bells and whistles, you want to look elsewhere. The Google Play Store has several alternatives available that allow you to add music or fine-tune the settings of your slideshow.

It's also worth remembering you won't be saving your slideshow separately. It works directly out of the album your slideshow photos are stored in (which is why you may want to create a new album for your slideshow).

If all that you really need is something that is simple and easy to use, then the slideshow from Google Photos is the best option. You can set up a slideshow in just seconds.

The process of deleting photos from Google Photos differs slightly depending on the platform. In a web browser, hover the cursor over the photo to delete and then select the gray checkmark in the top-left corner of the thumbnail. Select the trash can icon in the top-right of the window, then Move to trash to delete all selected images.

To select all of the photos in a given Google Photos album, hover the cursor over the first image and then select the gray checkmark in the corner of the thumbnail. Scroll to the last image in the album and hold Shift , then select the gray checkmark in the last photo's thumbnail to select all images in the album.

Move the cursor over a photo you want to copy, then select the gray checkbox that appears in the corner of the thumbnail. Repeat for all of the photos you want to copy, then select Download to save them to your computer.

If you’re looking for a nice way to view your Google Photos , you can create a slideshow. This lets you see the photos in an album or pictures in your library one at a time in full-screen mode. Sit back and watch or click to move through each photo in the show.

While you can’t currently add music or a background, it’s still a terrific way to view a collection of photos and relive those memories. Here’s how to make a slideshow with Google Photos.

What You Need

Google Photos app (optional)

You can make a slideshow on the Google Photos website in little time. Head to Google Photos and sign in with your Google account.

Step 1: In the navigation on the left, select Albums to see your albums on the right side. Or, expand the Albums section to view the albums within it.

Step 2: Choose an album to create the slideshow.

Step 3: Select the Three dots on the top right for More options and pick Slideshow .

Step 4: You’ll see your screen transform into full-screen mode and the slideshow begin. You can see each photo as it displays for a few seconds and moves onto the next.

Select the Pause button on the bottom left to stop on a particular photo and Play to resume. You can also use the Arrows on the bottom left of the screen to manually move forward or backward through the pictures in the album.

Step 5: When you finish, select the Exit icon on the bottom left, to the right of the arrows.

You’ll then return to the album in Google Photos.

If you simply want to view the pictures in the main Photos section as a slideshow, you can do this as well.

Step 1: On the left, select Photos .

Step 2: On the right, choose the photo you’d like to start the slideshow with to open it.

Step 4: You can then view the slideshow in full-screen mode starting with your selected photo.

Use the Pause button to stop, Play to resume, the Arrows to move forward or back manually, and the Exit button when you finish.

You can create a slideshow on your Android phone in the Google Photos app from either all your photos or a particular album.

Step 1: To view all photos in a slideshow, select the Photos tab and pick a photo.

To view an album, select the Library tab, pick the album, and choose a photo in the album to start the show.

Step 2: Tap the Three dots on the top right of the photo and select Slideshow in the menu that displays.

Step 3: You’ll see your slideshow begin automatically with your photos in full-screen mode. You can also move through the photos manually by swiping left or right.

To stop the slideshow, tap a photo, and to exit, tap the Arrow on the top left.

At this time, there is no option to add music to your slideshow. However, you can use a music streaming service in another tab to play whatever music you want.

Slideshows in Google Photos automatically loop. Once you get to the end of the pictures in your album, the first picture will show again.

PLATFORM: Android & iPhone

HOW IT WORKS: Google Photos is Google’s cloud-based media storage app, available to download on both Android and iPhone. With the app’s Movie feature, you can create a frills-free slideshow video on the fly. If you do not have a Google device (such as a Pixel phone) or are using Google Photos for the first time, you will need to upload and sync the media on your phone to the Google Photos library to access the Movie feature. Once you do, here’s how to create your movie:

TO CREATE A SLIDESHOW VIDEO IN GOOGLE PHOTOS:

Step 1: Go to the Library tab and tap the Utilities button.

Step 2: Scroll down to the “Create New” section and tap Movie .

Step 3 : Tap the New Movie box.

Step 4: Tap to select the photos and videos you want to include in your slideshow video.

Pinch the screen to zoom in or out to view your library by month, day or individually.

Drag up and down the quick scroll button that appears on the side of the screen to navigate quickly through your library.

Step 5: When you are finished selecting, tap Create at the top to access the editing options.

Step 6: In the Edit panel, you can adjust the length of each clip, the theme music, the aspect ratio, the order of the clips and the selection of photos and videos.

If the movie starts playing, tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the editing and sharing options and tap the Edit icon in the middle at the bottom.

Step 7: Make your edits, then tap Save . Now you can view your video.

Step 8: As it plays, tap anywhere to bring up the editing and sharing options. Tap the Share icon at the bottom, then tap the Share to… button, and select Save Video .

Google Photos, the image organizing app from Google, has its own built-in slideshow function. However, it only currently works on PC and Mac, not on mobile devices.

Create an Album for the Slideshow

First of all, you’ll need to either choose an already existing album or make a new one. Here’s how to do it:

Now that you have an album ready and waiting to be shown off, it’s pretty easy to get it working as a slideshow. At the moment of this writing, this option is only available on a desktop computer. So, if you’d like to make a slideshow on your phone, you’ll have to look for a different app.

The process is very simple. Here’s how to start up your slideshow:

Google photos will then make your browser window full screen, and will start to cycle through the photographs in the album. If you want to go back to a previous picture you can click on the left side of the screen, or press the Left arrow on your keyboard. If you want to advance to the next picture, click to the right of the window, or press the Right arrow on your keyboard. If you want to pause, you can click on the Pause button down at the bottom left of the slideshow. To exit, just hit the Escape key.

These are my 10 favorite Google Photos features

Most people are blissfully unaware of how much fun playing with the Google Photos features can be. I was one of those people until recently. For a long time, it was just my default photo library app , and I assumed it was just another way that Google was keen to manage every aspect of my life. I even found the Memories notifications a little irritating for a while. My default attitude was that I get enough notifications already without this photo storage app bugging me about something or other.

Then I clicked on one of them, and I was impressed. Many of us take photos to document nice moments and then forget about them, with the vague notion that one day we’ll sit down and reminisce. But Memories drops little reminders every now and then of good times gone by, which can lift your spirits a little. I wondered what other cool things the app could do, and it turns out that there’s no end to the edits, customizations, and creations that you can enjoy.

Some of these Google Photos features are too good to stay under the radar, so I’ll share my top 10 with you here.

1. Pinch to zoom your library

Pinching a photo to zoom in or out is now second nature to us, but did you know that you can also do it in your Google Photos library? Instead of actually zooming, this gesture can be used to enlarge the image previews on the screen. In the screenshots of my library above, I put my thumb and forefinger on the screen, then moved them apart to zoom out. The image previews got smaller and smaller still, becoming the grid view on the right.

The same change can be achieved by tapping the three vertical dots in the top right of the library screen and selecting one of the options under Layout , which are Comfortable, Day, and Month. But the pinching method is quicker and more intuitive.

2. Double-tap to start a search quickly

This is another Google Photos feature that saves me perhaps one second each time I use it, but I still think it’s worth knowing. Tapping the search button in the bottom right of the app takes you to the search page, but it doesn’t actually put you in the search field ready to enter a query. Instead of moving your finger up to tap the search field, you can just hit the search button again immediately to achieve the same aim.

3. Drag to select multiple images

You sometimes need to select a bunch of images at once. You may have already worked out that one way to do this is to tap and hold the first image preview, which both selects that image and also adds a small white circle to the top left of all other image previews. You can then tap each image you want to select. This is fine if you need to cherry-pick a few, but there’s a quicker way if you actually want to select all of the images in a certain block.

Tap and hold the first image, but instead of letting go when the white circles appear, keep holding your finger on the screen and drag it across the other image previews to select them all.

4. Sort by location

Google records the location of the photos you take, which you can see in the image details if you ever want to check. A nice upside to this is the way that Google Photos lets you search your photos by the location they were taken. No longer do you need to remember the dates you were somewhere to find the trip photos in your chronological library.

To check out this cool Google Photos feature, hit the Collections tab at the bottom of the app, then scroll down to Places . You’ll be presented with a list of places you’ve been. Choose one, and you’ll see all of the photos taken at that location.

Alternatively, you can tap the first option in that list, which is Your map . You’ll see a version of Google Maps, but with a heat map overlay that indicates at which locations photos in your library were shot.

If you have a photo in your library that doesn’t have a location or has it incorrectly listed, you can edit it manually. Select the image preview of the photo by tapping and holding it, the swipe up and choose Edit location .

5. Quickly find documents

We’ve all been there — you unexpectedly need to know some details from a document. You don’t have it on you, but you vaguely remember taking a photo of it a long time ago. Finding it in your library used to be like finding a needle in a haystack, but Google Photos can now recognize a document when you snap it, and you can easily look up these types of images.

Head to the Collections tab again. You’ll see a folder named Documents . Tap it, and you’ll see subfolders for identity documents, receipts, event information, and more.

6. Share photos easily

Google Photos has much better features for sharing photos than sending huge tranches of them over WhatsApp. You can simply put them in an album and then share access to that album with whoever you want.

There’s more than one way to do this. in the example above, you can select the photos you want to share (perhaps using the drag feature mentioned earlier) and then press Add to on the pull-up menu. It has a plus sign above it. You’ll get a new Create menu, and you can select Share album . From there, you simply complete the album details, then hit Share and send the link to the recipient.

If you want to go a step further and share your whole library with your partner, you can do that, too. Back on the library home page, tap the Share icon next to your profile icon in the top right of the screen. The icon depicts a figure with another figure behind it. Next, tap on Share with partner . You can limit the scope of the sharing on the next screen, like choosing a start date before which your partner can’t see the photos. Once you’re done, press Select partner and enter some contact details so that a link can be sent to them.

7. Create videos, animations, and more

There are a ton of fun ways to play with your photos and videos in Google Photos. It all starts with the + symbol at the top of the library home page. Tap that, and you have several creative options at your disposal. They include:

Collage: Combine several images together into a single photo in the old collage style.
Highlight video : Choose a person, pet, trip, date, etc and Google Photos will combine a selection of the related photos and videos into one highlight reel.
Cinematic photo : Transforms a normal image into a cinematic one with a moving camera effect.
Animation : Use a combination of photos to make a flick-book-style animation.

These Google Photos features are well worth trying for yourself, especially the highlight video. Making one featuring your partner takes just a couple of minutes, and sending it to them might make their day!

8. Use Lens

You can now use Lens within Google Photos, making it easy to investigate things in your old pictures. Just choose Lens below the image, and check out the results below.

I managed to work out that this delicious breakfast I had some time ago was Turkish Eggs. There are no doubt much better uses for the feature.

9. Put a name to a face

Back in the day, you had to spend hours manually tagging everyone in each photo. Google Photos now does it for you, as long as you tell it who’s who once.

You can do this on any individual photo by swiping up and then tapping add name next to any face that the app has recognized. You can also hit Edit faces to remove a tag or correct a face that Photos has incorrectly identified, although it’s very good at this task in general.

There’s another way to sort out the faces of people more generally in the app. Go to Collections > People and Pets to see a lineup of many faces from your photos. Tapping on one will take you to the same screen where you can add a name. If two faces are the same person, giving them the same name will merge them.

10. Hide stuff from Memories

There may be times when you don’t want to delete a photo, but you also don’t want it to pop up in Memories. Perhaps it could remind you of a bad time or show an ex that your partner wouldn’t appreciate. Google Photos has a feature that lets you hide certain photos from appearing in Memories.

From the app home screen, tap your profile image in the top right, then select Photos settings > Preferences > Memories . You can see the options to Hide people and pets or to Hide dates .

Selecting the former gives you the chance to select faces for two categories. One is Blocked , which stops the person or pet from appearing in any Memories at all. The other is a new option of Show less , which means you won’t get Memories generated about that person, but they might still appear in group photos within Memories.

While these are my favorite features, Google Photos has a bunch more that might fit your style better. And that’s all before Android 15 arrives with some new tweaks to the Photos app.

Using text (and only text) in your Google Slides presentation is a great way to lose the attention of your audience. Inserting photos and animated GIFs can immediately spice things up by emphasizing the important points you make.

There are a couple of ways to insert images into a Google Slides presentation. You can upload the file yourself, link to an external image by URL, use images stored in Google Photos or Google Drive, take pictures using your device's built-in camera, or insert images using a web search. Here's how.

If you want to insert images (including animated GIFs) from your computer, you can do that easily in Google Slides.

Open your Google Slides presentation and then click Insert > Image > Upload from Computer to select your chosen image.

Find the image file on your computer and insert it into your presentation.

Inserting a static image and a GIF into a Google Slides presentation

If you've chosen a static image file (for instance, a JPG or PNG file), the image will appear on the slide you've selected.

Animated GIFs will loop, showing the same brief scene repeatedly.

You can begin to edit images in Google Slides after inserting them. If the GIF doesn't load, you may need to insert it by URL instead.

Google Slides allows you to link to external image files, including animated GIFs from sources such as GIPHY . Make sure you have permission to use and link to an external image file before you insert it.

To do this, open your Google Slides presentation . On whichever slide you want to add the image, click Insert > Image > By URL.

If the image is correct, the URL should instantly be replaced with a preview of the static image or GIF.

Click the "Insert" button to add the image or GIF you've chosen into your presentation.

You can insert images and GIFs from your Google Drive and Google Photos cloud storage directly into a Google Slides presentation you have access to.

To insert images from your Google storage, open your presentation and click Insert > Image. Choose "Photos" to upload an image from your Google Photos storage or "Drive" to upload an image from your Google Drive storage.

In the menu on right, locate a suitable image (or multiple images). When you're ready, click the "Insert" button at the bottom.

You can also double-click any of the images you locate to insert them directly.

Google Slides supports the ability to take and insert pictures from a built-in or attached camera connected to your PC. Your web browser must have access to your camera to do this.

Open your Slides presentation and click Insert > Image > Camera.

If you're using a browser like Google Chrome, you might be asked for permission to allow access to your camera. Click the "Allow" button to authorize this in Chrome.

Take the picture using your camera by pressing the onscreen camera button; then select the image (or images) you want to insert from the previews to the right.

Click "Insert" to add them to your presentation when you're ready.

Google Slides allows you to take advantage of Google's enormous search capabilities to find images on the web. You can search for images using a built-in image search, enabling you to insert the images you find directly into your Google Slides presentation.

Unfortunately, you can't easily locate and insert GIFs using this method. You'll need to download them first or insert them using a URL instead.

To start, open your Google Slides presentation and press Insert > Image > Search the Web.

A search menu will appear on the right. Use the provided search bar to search for images. Click to select any of the images that appear and then press the "Insert" button below to add them to your presentation.

You can also double-click any of the images to insert them directly.

You can share photos, videos, albums, and highlight videos with any of your contacts, even if they don't use the Google Photos app.

Share photos & videos in a conversation

On your computer, open photos.google.com .
Sign in to your Google Account.

To share with one person, click their name.

To share with a group, click New group , and select multiple people.
To make sharing easier, Google suggests people to share with based on your interactions.
Optional: Write a message to go with your shared media.
Click Send .

Tip: There is a 20,000 photo limit on conversations.

On the left, click Photos .

Enter an album title.
At the top right, click Share .

To share a link, click Create link .
To share through other apps, choose the app you want to use.

Manage, review, or leave your albums & conversations

On your computer, go to photos.google.com .

Important : When you leave a shared album, all of the photos, videos, comments, and likes you have added will be removed.

Click the conversation.
In the conversation, click your account icon or initial.
Next to your name, click Leave .

Open the album you want to remove someone from.
Scroll to find the contact you’d like to remove.
In a shared album or conversation thread, click on the photo or video.
In a shared album or conversation thread, click on the date next to the comment or like.
Click Delete .

Learn about what happens when you share photos & videos

When you send to a contact in Google Photos:

People get an in-app notification and a push notification. If it’s a new album or conversation, they get an email notification.
The shared items appear in their Sharing page.
Their account profile photo or initial is added to the album or conversation and will appear faded until they view the album or conversation.
When they view the album or conversation, their account profile photo or initial will appear in the activity view next to the latest photos, comments, or likes they have viewed.
If they join, like, comment, or add photos to a shared album or conversation, their profile image changes to their account profile photo or initial.
If you edit a photo that you previously shared via link sharing, people may be able to temporarily view the unedited version through the original link.
Your profile name will appear on all photos you add.
Your account profile photo or initial will appear next to the latest photos you added.
If you share a video captured fully or partially in slow motion, viewers can watch any part of the video at a slower speed in their own player.

Important: If you think someone is spamming you, or violating other abuse policies, you can block or report them. Learn more about our abuse policies .

You’ll get an in-app notification and a push notification. If it’s a new album or conversation, you’ll get an email notification.
The shared item will appear in your Sharing page.
When you view the album or conversation, your account profile photo or initial in the album will light up and appear next to the latest photos, comments, or likes you have viewed.
If you join, like, comment, or add photos in a shared album or conversation, your account profile photo or initial will appear next to the action you took.
If someone edits a photo after they've shared the link with you, the original link sharing may not immediately update to the new version of the photo.

When you save a photo or video that has been shared with you, you receive a copy of it in your library. Any edits to the original shared photo after it has been saved will not apply to your saved copy. Saved photos and videos count toward your quota except for certain partner sharing instances. To save photos and videos shared with you in a conversation:

In the conversation, scroll to the photo or video that you want to save.

In a shared album, you can:

Save a photo or video to your library: In the album, click the photo or video that you want to save. At the top, click Save .

Tip: When you save a shared album to your albums tab, you receive a copy of the album in your albums tab. This doesn’t save album content to your library.
