History of the Modern Football

The game of football is said to be invented in the mid-19 th century. In the year 1863 rugby football and association football branched off and Football Association in England was established. However, China claims to have played the first version of football centuries ago.

Both rugby football and association football were widely loved and played across the Atlantic. As rugby football came to be known as rugger and association football came to be known by the name, soccer, the Americans came up with their own version of the game and called it football.

Charles Goodyear designed and crafted the very first vulcanized rubber football in the year 1855. Most of the footballs are now being made with rubber bladders.

The first international association football match was played between Scotland and England in the year 1872. The match played by the national teams of England and Scotland was held at Scotland Cricket Club’s ground located at Hamilton Crescent in Partick Scotland.

Why was it named Football?

Contrary to the popular belief, football is not named so because it is played with the feet. It is named football because it is played on the foot and not on the horseback like other royal games in England. A number of other reasons have also been given for naming it so.

Football is an interesting game played between two teams consisting of 11 players each. It is played with a circular ball having a circumference of 58-61 cm. It is exciting to see the way the players take on each other to bring the game to their stride.

Football: The Rules of the Game

Just like every other game, football also has certain set of rules that define the way it should be played and determine as to which team emerges winner.

A football match is played for a total of 1 hour 45 minutes. This includes a 15 minutes break in between the match. So, the total playing time is 90 minutes. The match is played in two halves comprising of 45 minutes each.

Each team consists of a total of 11 players that include 10 outfield players and one goal keeper. Players wear football boots and shin pads during the match. The goalkeepers wear padded gloves in addition to it. The football field must either have natural or artificial grass. The pitch size may vary however it should necessarily be within 100-130 yards long and 50-100 yards wide.

To score points, the football must go into the opponent’s goal. The goal comprises of a frame which is 8 feet high and 8 yards wide. Goal can be scored using any part of the body apart from the hand, arms or shoulder. Players are not allowed to use their hands to handle to ball at any point in time during the match. Goal keeper is the only player who is allowed to handle the ball with any part of the body including hands.

It goes without saying that the team with the maximum goals wins the game. In case scores are equal by the end of the 90 minutes stint then the match will end as a draw. However, there are certain football matches where in a penalty shoot is given to determine the winner.

The game of football is super exciting and the level of excitement increases manifolds during the last 45 minutes. It is great to see the fans cheering, cheer leaders dancing and the players giving their best shot during this time.

FIFA that was established in the year 1904 stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association which is French for International Federation of Association Football. It is headquartered in Zurich.

The initiative for the formation of FIFA was taken to monitor international football matches among the teams from Belgium, France, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Netherland and Spain. Its arena expanded and over the time it has become the international governing body of association football, beach soccer and futsal. Today, it organizes some of the major international football tournaments including the Football World Cup. As many as 211 national associations have its membership.

Contrary to the popular notion, FIFA does not define or control the rules of the game. It is only responsible for organizing tournaments and promoting them for revenue generation. The rules and laws of the game are set by International Football Association Board.

FIFA conducts a grand awards ceremony every year. This is held to recognize the achievements of the best team and player during that year. FIFA Ballon d’Or is awarded to the best male player and FIFA World Player of the Year is awarded to the best female player.

Leisure and play activities fulfill an important role in modern society. Through these events, people are able to relax and obtain some level of enjoyment. In addition to this, the activities enable the participating members and observers of the games to socialize with each other. Soccer (referred to as football by the Saudis) is the most popular sport in Saudi Arabia.

This paper will describe this game and explain its history in Saudi Arabia. The paper will discuss the Soccer Al Nasser Saudi Club in order to show who participates in the sport and who observes it. The elements within the game that contravene prevailing attitudes among Saudis and those that reaffirm them will be discussed.

Football, a sporting activity commonly referred to as soccer in North America, involves players from two opposing teams who attempt to control a ball and score against each other. Each team has eleven players working harmoniously to score goals and avoid conceding any. The players hit the ball across the field to pass it over the opposition’s goal line. The team that has acquired the greater number of goals by the end of the allocated playtime is declared the victor.

Soccer has been a part of Saudi culture since the formation of this nation in 1932. The sport was introduced to the Kingdom following the relations between the Europeans and the Saudis in the 20th century. After Saudi became a nation, soccer went on to become the national sport and it has remained popular to date.

Saudi Arabia has been a part of the international football scene for decades. The nation founded its football federation in 1956 and over the following years, many football clubs have been established in the country. One of the most popular clubs is the Soccer Al Nasser Saudi Club, which was formed as an amateur association but grew to become a professional club in 1960. This Club has won many trophies including the Saudi Primer League and the prestigious Asian Champions League.

The participants in Saudi football are male amateur and professional footballers. Amateur teams engage in competitive games as well as non-competitive ones mostly at the local level. Professional footballers are often involved in competitive events. The Soccer Al Nasser Saudi Club is very active in Saudi professional football and it has won many titles.

Only men play in the team and the team’s coaches and managers are male. The club has many supporters in Riyadh and the rest of the country. A vast majority of these supporters are men of different ages. The supporters attend major matches and they engage in loud cheering for their team.

In some ways, football in Saudi Arabia contravenes prevailing attitudes in the country. For example, Saudis are very respectful and friendly to strangers. This friendliness is not obvious when playing football as each team has to view the opponents as rivals. The football fans engage in loud cheering for their team while they jeer at the opposing team.

This public display of resentment for other people is not a part of Saudi culture and it only takes place in the context of the football match. When not engaging in the sport, Saudis are very friendly people who treat friends and strangers with great respect and consideration.

There are some instances where Saudi football reaffirms patterns within the culture at times of non-play. To begin with, the sport reaffirms the segregation between men and women in Saudi society. Women do not mix with men in the public and this is evident in soccer. Men carry out the games and the observing fans are mostly men. In addition to this, there are no clubs for women in Saudi Arabia due to the societal roles of men and women in the country.

Some aspects of the self-perception of Saudis can be deduced from their participation in football. Saudis value relationships between people in the society and efforts are made to make connections. Football is used as a forum for getting to know other people in the community.

During the sporting event, the spectators engage in dialogue with each other and form friendships. The aspirations of the Saudi people to be winners can also be seen from the game. Professional and amateur footballers dedicate a lot of time and effort preparing for each game. After a victory, the team members and their fans celebrate the victory.

Football is a sporting activity that fulfills an important role in Saudi society. This paper has described the game and shown its history in Saudi Arabia. I thought in this post, we’ll look at different types of رِياضة  in Arabic and vocabulary to help us talk about ال رِياضة . Football is considered the most popular sport رِياضة شَعْبية in Arab countries. Boys tend to grow up playing football outside in the neighborhood الحَيّ and in school. Many people, both men and women have a favorite team that they cheer for and take seriously. There are of course national Arab teams المُنْتَخَبات الوَطَنية العربية that people root for, yet they also obsess over famous sports teams. There are also famous Arab players such as محمد صالح from مصر who plays for Liverpool. Many cafes have a screen for people to watch a football game while having tea, coffee, hookah الشيشة , etc. Especially during World Cup كأس العَالَم season, cafes are packed, and you can hear people cheering late into the night.

For much of the past three decades, soccer constituted the only major battleground that rivalled Islam in the creation of alternative public space in a swath of land stretching from the Gulf to the Atlantic coast of Africa. Away from the glare of the international media, soccer provided a venue to release pent-up anger and frustration and struggle for political, gender, economic, social, ethnic and national rights. By the time the Arab revolt erupted in December 2010, soccer had emerged as a key non-religious, non-governmental institution capable of successfully confronting security force-dominated repressive regimes and militant Islamists. Increasingly over the past two decades, soccer became a high-stakes game, a political cat-and-mouse contest between fans and autocrats for control of the pitch and a counterbalance to jihadi employment of soccer as a bonding and recruitment tool. All participants in the game banked on the fact that only soccer could capture the deep-seated emotion, passion and commitment evoked by Islam among a majority of the population in the Middle East and North Africa. As a result, professional soccer inevitably emerged as an early casualty when protests spilled into the streets. Suspending league matches is one of the first steps embattled Middle Eastern and North African leaders take when mass anti-government protests erupt. They understand the soccer pitch's potential as an opposition rallying point. Syria's indefinite suspension of professional soccer in early 2011 in advance of the government's violent crackdown pushed anti-government protests back into the mosque. With soccer stadiums inaccessible to the public and serving as detention centres and staging points for security forces, protests more often than not start at a mosque, the only remaining place where people can gather in numbers. The suspension of professional soccer when protests initially erupted in Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria meant that militant, highly politicised, violence-prone soccer fans shifted their protest from the stadium to the square. They often played a unique role in helping protesters seeking to rid themselves of the yoke of repressive rule, economic mismanagement and corruption to break through the barrier of fear erected by neo-patriarchal autocrats that had condemned them to silence and passivity until then. Neo-patriarchy is what makes Arab authoritarianism different from dictatorships in other parts of the world. Dictatorial regimes are not simply superimposed on societies gasping for freedom. Arab autocracies may lack popular support and credibility but their repressive reflexes that create barriers of fear are internalized and reproduced at virtually every layer of society. As a result societal resistance to and fear of change contributed to their sustainability. In a controversial book published in 1992 that is still banned in many Arab countries, Palestinian-American historian Hisham Sharabi argued that Arab society was built around the “dominance of the father (patriarch), the centre around which the national as well as the natural family are organized. Thus between ruler and ruled, between father and child, there exist only vertical relations: in both settings the paternal will is absolute will, mediated in both the society and the family by a forced consensus based on ritual and coercion.” With other words, Arab regimes franchised repression so that society, the oppressed, participated in their repression and denial of rights. The regime is in effect the father of all fathers at the top of the pyramid. In the words of Egyptian journalist Khaled Diab, Egypt’s problem was not simply an aging president with little to show for himself after almost thirty years in power, but the fact that “Egypt has a million (president Hosni) Mubaraks.” As a result, the patriarchal values that dominate soccer in addition to its popularity made it the perfect game for neo-patriarchs. Their values were soccer’s values: assertion of male superiority in most aspects of life, control or harnessing of female lust and a belief in a masculine God. In breaking through the neo-patriarchal barriers of fear, militant soccer fans extended the tradition of soccer’s close association with politics across the Middle East and North Africa that is evident until today in derbies in Amman, Tehran, Riyadh and Cairo, home to the world's most violent encounter on the pitch. Their battle on the pitch is not just about the political and economic future of the region. It is also a battle that challenges gender prejudice in asserting women's rights to play the game against the odds of legal restriction, social pressure and religious dress codes. And it is a cornerstone in efforts by the stateless -- Palestinians and Kurds -- to obtain a state of their own or by minorities like the Berbers, Iranian Azeris and Israeli Palestinians to assert their identity. In this essay, I discuss the role of the soccer pitch as a venue for resistance to autocratic regimes and a battlefield for greater political freedom and economic opportunity, statehood, identity politics, and gender rights as well as an arena of competition with militant jihadists. This positions soccer as a platform on which multiple political battles are fought in both autocratic Middle Eastern and North African societies as well as those that enjoy some degree of political openness.

Stadia have re-emerged as a preferred jihadist target. The Islamic State (IS) targeted a friendly between France and Germany in its November 2015 attacks in Paris (Andres, 2015). German police said days later that they had foiled a plot against a stadium in the German city of Hannover barely an hour before the German national team was scheduled to play. Similarly, Belgium cancelled a friendly against Spain (Ryan, Faiola & Souad, 2015). The list of targeted stadia is long. It dates back to an Al Qaeda plan to strike against the 1998 World Cup (Robinson, 2011) and includes sporting grounds in among others Iraq and Nigeria (Dorsey, 2014). The targeting of stadia spotlights jihadists’ often convoluted relationship to soccer. Many jihadists see soccer as an infidel invention designed to distract the faithful from fulfilling their religious obligations. Yet, others are soccer fans or former, failed or disaffected players who see the sport as an effective recruitment and bonding tool. Men like Osama Bin Laden, Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah’s Hassan Nasrallah base their advocacy of the utility of soccer on those Salafi and mainstream Islamic scholars who argue that the Prophet Mohammed advocated physical exercise to maintain a healthy body as opposed to more militant students of Islam who at best seek to re-write the rules of the game to Islamicize it, if not outright ban the sport. Self-declared IS caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi embodies the jihadists’ double-edged attitude towards soccer. A passionate player in his pre-IS days (McCant, 2015) Al-Baghdadi’s IS and its affiliates take credit for scores of attacks on stadia. A successful attack on a major soccer match in Europe would go a long way to achieve IS’s goals of polarizing communities, exacerbating social tensions, and driving the marginalized further into the margins. In targeting the sport and stadia, jihadists focus on the world’s most popular form of popular culture and the one fixture that evokes the kind of deep-seated emotion capable of rivalling passions associated with religion and sectarianism. Yet, the relationship between militant Islam and soccer is one that has barely been researched by scholars in multiple disciplines, including Islamic, Middle Eastern and sports studies. This article constitutes a first stab at trying to fill the gap.

[English] The development of contentious collective action in Egypt has encouraged the emergence of new spaces of protest, but also the development of new strategies of opposition. This article aims to investigate the mobilization of the Cairo Ultras groups by examining their use of space, first within the stadium grounds, and particularly through their use of graffiti art. Through an analysis primarily centred on their graffiti, we wish to account for the evolution in their mobilization, as well as understand the development and transformation of their messages. The present study is, for the most part, based on a thorough analysis of graffiti and street art collected during a series of field trips conducted between 2012 and the beginning of 2015. The majority of the data was gathered around Tahrir Square and Mohammed Mahmoud Street, as well as around the Ahly and Zamalek stadia. Graffiti are of particular interest in the Egyptian case, most notably because they allow for expression of a specific social and/or political reality using precise graphic and discursive rules. Danyel Reiche provides a different perspective on sports in Lebanon. In chapter 9, he engages with the scholarship that emphasizes the benefits of mega-sporting events to host countries, from increasing their international prestige and influencing on global politics, through mobilizing national pride, to serving as tool of economic development. Reiche investigates the benefits accrued to Lebanon as a result of hosting four regional mega-sporting events after the civil war ended in 1990. He examines the similarities and differences between these four events by examining, in particular, the tangible and intangible legacies. Apart from a review of academic and press articles, primary data was collected by interviewing key stakeholders in the Lebanese sports sector who were involved in the events. The chapter concludes that while the events provided the country with some short-term promotional benefits, they introduced a heavy financial burden, especially regarding stadium and sports hall construction. Resources to maintain those facilities became a source for corruption. The chapter suggests that, in the future, Lebanon should consider co-hosting mega-sporting events with other countries in order to limit the financial risks. It should also integrate legacy management programs into the event planning to avoid unused facilities after the events.

No study, analysis or history of modern society is complete without a focus on the nexus of sport, society, culture, politics and development, and the power of this nexus is nowhere more evident than in soccer – the world‘s most global cultural practice. Through their involvement in soccer, governments, NGOs, players, managers and fans define who they are as well as who they think others are. This is particularly true in the Middle East and North Africa where soccer has played a key role in the struggle against colonialism and for independence, national identity formation, assertion of power and resistance to autocracy. Yet, research into the role of soccer in the development of the Middle East and North Africa since the late 19th century, and most recently in this decade‘s popular uprisings, is nascent at best

Arabic language, Arab culture and football: an education resource for primary schools

Football is an exciting sport that brings together millions of young fans across the world each year.

In 2022, Qatar will be the first Arabic speaking country to host the World Cup. To mark the occasion, this resource from the British Council and Qatar Foundation International (QFI) provides information, opportunities for discussion and activities for primary teachers to share with their pupils. This will help them to find out about the lives of a group of girls in the Arab world who love football and start to investigate Arabic language and Arab culture.

Activity one

The first activity provides an opportunity to learn about the lives of girls in Egypt who have taken part in a Premier Skills football coaching programme, as part of the 1000 Dreams project. The girls introduce themselves and their ambitions and share how and why football is important to them.

Activity two

The second activity encourages pupils to find out about footballers who play for a country that is a member of the Arab League.

Both activities suggest ways to share the learning outcomes with a partner school overseas.

Why Soccer is the Most Universal Language on the Planet

Every game is its own story: an epic, a tragedy, and a comedy, all at once.

Soccer is a language, probably the most universal language on the planet. It is spoken more widely than English, Arabic, or Chinese and practiced more widely than any religion. In 1954, the French soccer journalist Jean Eskenazi wrote an essay on the “universality” of the game. It is, he declared, “the only denominator common to all people, the only universal Esperanto . . . a world language, whose grammar is unchanging from the North Pole to the Equator.” Although mutually intelligible everywhere it is played, it is still delightfully varied, “spoken in each corner of the globe with a particular accent.” The Swedish writer Fredrik Ekelund similarly calls the game the “Esperanto of the feet.” The novelist Karl Ove Knausgaard, who wrote a book of letters about the 2014 men’s World Cup with Ekelund, offers a vivid example of how this language works. Picked up once by a German truck driver while he was hitchhiking, Knausgaard found he had no common language with which to pass the time during the long ride. Then, he began saying the names of soccer players. He started with a Norwegian footballer, Rune Bratseth, and the German recognized him, “brightening up and repeating it several times.” Knausgaard continues, “Then he said a name, so I said Ja! Ja!” These names, keys to a broader set of shared memories and experiences and feelings, were a thread of connection.

Every soccer game is a story. But it is not easy to capture it in words. Why, wonders the Mexican novelist and journalist Juan Villoro, has there never been “a great football novel”? The answer, he suggests, may be that every game is already “its own epic, its own tragedy, its own comedy,” all at once. The works of literature that do try to narrate soccer, including many remarkable short stories, often do so by piecing together fragments of story, attempting to capture the way moments on the pitch somehow condense the drama of life. Knausgaard imagines a piece of writing about just one game, one that would concentrate “on only these 90 minutes, chart all the incidents, all the moves, also all the names and not just follow them on the pitch but in life, their stories before the game, parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends, what happened after the game, the following years, the career that finished, life in a satellite town outside some Colombian or Iranian city.” In any given game, he suggests, is a whole world. The 90 minutes are “inexhaustible.” Perhaps David Kilpatrick had the right idea when he decided he would write a short poem in response to every game in the 2014 men’s World Cup, considering “each game itself a text to be read.” He sat in front of his television, pen in hand, producing 64 poems, at turns humorous, tragic, elegiac.

Soccer never stops. The clock never stops ticking, for any reason—there are no timeouts, no pauses. There is just halftime, and then a break before and between overtime periods, if they occur. The only concession to the fact that time may have been lost because of injury or intentional time wasting on the part of a team is the referee’s right to add time to the end of the game, but it is almost never more than five minutes. Soccer time is very different from what we experience in basketball or American football—where the clock starts and stops constantly, making the actual time it takes to watch any game unpredictable—as well as from baseball, which has no clock at all. This is one of the defining features of the game. Although you never know what will happen in a soccer match, you can be sure about how long it will take: 90 minutes, usually a little more, or 120 if things go into overtime, and a little longer if there is a penalty kick shootout.

“That is one of the reasons we return again and again to the game, hoping to catch a glimpse of beauty that we never can predict, or even imagine, before it happens.”

Soccer’s rules have changed little since they were set down in the 19th century. It’s true that a few people have offered intriguing alternatives to the way it is structured. In the 1960s Asger Jorn, a Danish Situationist artist inspired by Marxist ideas, decided there was no reason to limit soccer games to only two teams in perpetual opposition. Why not open things up a bit? He created “three-sided football,” sometimes more pointedly called “Anarchist Football.” It is played on a hexagon with three teams and three goals. There is no referee—no state to legislate what happens—and the game turns into a complex swirl of temporary alliances and understandings. Two teams can go against one, collaborating at least for a time, but also change tactics and friends as the situation warrants. And the winner of the game is not the team that scores the most goals, but the one that, through collaboration and alliance with other teams, manages to suffer the fewest goals against them. The game has a regular following in Europe, with matches organized in England and France, and a nascent set of leagues in the United States too.

For now, though, soccer remains a dialectic, never-ending struggle between two teams. “In a football match,” the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre writes—with delicious understatement—“everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team.” Imagine how wonderful it would be if there weren’t any defense: so much easier to dribble a ball gracefully across the pitch, pass to your teammates, and score a beautiful goal. There also, of course, would be no drama—and therefore no point. It is the back-and-forth between offense and defense, which generations of players and coaches have tried to figure out how to control, that makes soccer beautifully unpredictable and therefore endlessly fascinating.  

Soccer is, as we often hear, the “beautiful game.” What makes it so? A “beautiful play,” writes literary theorist Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, “is an epiphany of form” that happens through the “sudden, surprising convergence of several athletes’ bodies” in a particular place, at a particular moment. Such moments are delightful precisely because they are unpredicted and unknown even for the “players who perform them, because they must be achieved against the unpredictable resistance of the other team’s defense.” The fact that such a play has to overcome intense and carefully deployed opposition, whose goal is to “destroy the emerging form and precipitate chaos,” is what makes it feel like a kind of miracle. “There are few experiences,” admits Gumbrecht, “that make my heart beat faster than a beautiful play.” It is also evanescent, as is the feeling it produces. Although you can watch a replay of an amazing moment in soccer, that never really captures the epiphany and awe that accompany its first unfolding. That is one of the reasons we return again and again to the game, hoping to catch a glimpse of beauty that we never can predict, or even imagine, before it happens.  

Soccer is sensual. It is about the pleasure of watching athletes’ bodies, their faces, their motion, admiring and commenting on their hairstyles and tattoos. When we talk and write about soccer, we evoke—more often unconsciously than consciously—its sensuality, its role as a source of pleasure. “The goal is soccer’s orgasm,” notes the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, probably the sport’s most eloquent and poetic chronicler. The ball goes into the goal, inciting shouts of ecstatic joy. The sexual metaphor is, on one level, obvious: it is about male penetration. Yet what this metaphor actually means to those who play and those who watch is anything but simple. And goals, in any case, are very rare, a fleeting exception within the game. Soccer may be the most tantric of sports. Some of the greatest and most riveting games end 0–0. Perhaps what is truly sensual about soccer is that it is about interplay, relationships, motion between people, all tied up with our deepest and most mysterious emotions.

In soccer, there are simply no guarantees. A team can seem to be doing everything right—have a coach nicknamed “the Professor” who recruits the best players in the world, approach their training scientifically, mobilize the best doctors and studies, analyze and perfect tactics endlessly, bring in team psychologists, energize a devoted fan base in a beautiful stadium at the heart of a global capital—and still never quite live up to expectations. Even after all that, on a bad day, the team can seem like a collection of players who have no idea what they are doing on the pitch.

This is a beginning lesson. I took the material from Arabic book namely al-3arabiyya lin-naashi-in ( العربية للناشئين ).

We’ll start from book 1.

The learning method:

• I explain the basic grammar from the Arabic sentences.
• The final step is comprehending the grammar concept by exercising.

Let’s start from the first conversation, the title is “football”.

The lesson from the conversation

1. Islamic greeting :

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ

In Arabic, it is called jumla ismiyya (جملة اسميّة) .

أَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ is one of jumla ismiyya’s example.

This sentence is started with damir (ضمير) then followed by ism (اسم)

أَنَا is damir or pronoun.

مُحَمَّدٌ is ism or the name of the person.

Now, you can try to make simple sentences in Arabic with this pattern.

3. Welcoming expression in Arabic : أَهْلاُ

أَهْلاُ means hello!, welcome!

We can see the example from conversation above.

أَهْلاُ مُحَمَّدٌ means Hello Muhammad; Welcome Muhammad.

The sentence example told you about expression for asking something in Arabic.

Use مَاذَ then followed by فعل (verb).

For intransitive verb, there is no object, so the simple pattern is : verb + doer
