1. Dinosaur Clothespin Puppets

Children are naturally inquisitive and they generally adore the topic of dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are a group of animals that existed for over 160  million years. Scientists and Paleontologists have identified more than 500 different dinosaur families and more than a 1000 different species, and more than 9000 birds.

Children may enjoy knowing that the term "dinosaur" was coined by a famous paleontologist in 1842 and the word means "Terrible Lizard" in Greek. One of the most famous dinosaurs is Sue. Sue is the largest, most extensive and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever found. She was found by, and named after, Sue Hendrickson and can be found in the Chicago Field Museum.

Printable Dinosaur Grid Game

Help young children build number sense with this fun, printable dinosaur grid game. This game is available in the Building Number Sense with Grid Games packet.

Fun Dinosaur Activities

Dinosaur Names Materials: small photo of each student, dinosaur backline copies, crayons or markers, sharpie. Have each student color their dinosaur picture with crayons or markers. Glue a small photo of each student (head shot) onto the dinosaur picture in the place where the head is. Re-name your dinosaur using the student’s name; for example: Michael’s dinosaur would now be a “Michael-a-saurus” and Nicole’s dinosaur would be a “Nichole-a-saurus”. Use a sharpie to write the name of the new found dinosaur at the bottom of each picture and display in the hallway. This activity is sure to tickle everybody’s funny bone and be a class favorite! You can also bind these together and turn them into a class book.

Dinosaur Roar! Materials: blank paper, crayons or markers, sharpie. This is a great companion activity to do after you read Dinosaur Roar! by Paul Strickland. Read the story to your students and then ask them what type of dinosaur they would be. Provide them with paper and crayons or markers and ask them to draw themselves as a dinosaur, then have them dictate to you what type of dinosaur they would be. You can scribe the responses at the bottom of their paper with a sharpie or pen. For example; dinosaur strong, dinosaur weak, dinosaur fast, dinosaur slow, dinosaur sweet, dinosaur grumpy etc. Bind the responses into a class book and place in the classroom library, it’s sure to be a big hit!

Macaroni Dinosaur Bones Materials: uncooked macaroni noodles, glue, black construction paper. Have students glue the macaroni on to black paper cut in the shape of a dinosaur to create a 3-D dinosaur skeleton. This looks best on black paper, the noodles stand out and look like real “bones”.

Fossils Materials: Crayola Model Magic, uncooked macaroni or other types of pasts. Read Dinosaur Bones by Bob Barner and discuss what fossils are. Next, give each child a small amount of Crayola Model Magic and have them press it flat like pancakes. Provide various types of pasta and press it into the Model Magic to create your own fossils. Let it dry for several hours to become solid.

Dinosaur Graph Materials: butcher paper, crayons or markers. Title your graph “What’s your favorite dinosaur?” and divide your butcher paper into columns for your graph. Write the name of a different dinosaur at the top of each row. You can also use crayons or markers to draw the dinosaurs at the top of the columns if your students don’t read yet. Ask the students to write their name in the column of their favorite dinosaur. Post this graph in the hallway or on a bulletin board.

Dinosaurs Lived Long Ago Materials: white crayons (NON-washable), white paper, dinosaur stencils, watercolor paints. After reading Whatever Happened to the Dinosaurs? by Bernard Most and singing “Dinosaurs Lived Long Ago” we do the following activity. For each child trace a dinosaur stencil shape onto white paper using a white, non-washable crayon. Have the students paint on the paper using the watercolors and the dinosaurs will magically reappear on the paper!

Possible misconceptions are highlighted so that teachers may plan lessons to facilitate correct conceptual understanding. Resources support the teaching of animals, including humans and materials, plants and their properties. This is an older resource, but contains some useful pages that might be used to stimulate discussion.  An introduction to dinosaurs (pages 4-5) names and describes a selection of dinosaurs and this selection is added to on pages 8-9.  Illustrations on pages  6-7 show how fossils of dinosaur bones are displayed in museums.  If your school has a collection of real fossils or a replica set, children might create their own 'museum', complete with labels and even a guide book! 

Watch out for the Natural History Museum's Dippy the Diplodocus as he is about to embark on a tour of the country.  Bringing a famous dinosaur within easy travel distance for numerous children may well add extra spice to many a dinosaur topic!

Biology Changing the World

Quality Assured Collection Category: Science Publisher: Royal Society of Biology

Aimed at older primary, this collection of resources links to the topics of rocks and soils, evolution, identification and classification. Designed around the Biology Changing the World project it provides information on the life and work of three great biologists: Mary Anning, C B Williams and Beatrix Potter providing insight into their impact on science.

The Rocks and Soils resource, first on the list, provides an example of a simple 'how a fossil is made' sequence.  What we know about dinosaurs is based entirely on the study of their remains.  Some distant relations of the dinosaurs still exist, but it is from fossils that we discover much of what we know about the huge variety of life that existed at the time of the dinosaurs. For younger learners introduce this in very simple terms.  Children might model their own 'fossil' formation process using basic food ingredients.  Use fresh sliced bread, a mixture of white and brown, with crusts cut off.  Jelly sweets (some are even shaped like sea creatures and worms!) are 'fossilised', trapped in-between 'sedimentary' layers of bread.  Wrap the sandwiched bread and sweets in plastic film, place a board on top and compress under a weight (or stack of books, safely positioned).  Children observe what happens over time and ultimately break open the stack to reveal what remains of the sugary sweets.

This activity helps to show how fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth in the past. It includes a short video, which explains what fossils are and how they are formed and shows how to make a replica fossil using dinosaur footprints and Plaster of Paris.

A follow on activity shows how to create a model of rock layers with fossils in them using different coloured jelly. Layers can be added each day in the classroom to give children a clearer picture of the fossilisation process. It also helps to show how the age of the rock relates to the age of the fossil you find in the rock, the fossils found at the bottom being older than the fossils found in the layers at the top.

Introduction and Guide to Teaching Primary Science

This resource is certainly a blast from the past, but it still includes lots of worthy ideas!  A chapter on dinosaurs, beginning on page 38 (and perhaps worth reading if you have the time) makes an important point.  With very young children, we must make their experience of  dinosaurs as concrete as possible.  Difficult for sure, but not impossible.  Use infomation about dinosaur scale and measure out their approximate size / length in non-standard or standard units on the playground.  Make comparisons: Was a Diplodocus the height of a house or a bus?  Was a Coelyphilis larger or smaller than a cow?  Create and use models to set the scene and 'play-act' dinosaur interactions.  Encourage children to move like a Tyrannosaurus or Brontosaurus.  How are these dinosaurs' movements similar and different?  Which dinosaurs move quickly and which move more slowly? 

What on Earth?

This pack contains a range of different activities based on the theme of ‘Earth’. The activities cover a mixture of topics including: weather, gravity, plants, fossils, energy and soil. From slow, plant-eating giants to fierce scavengers and hunters, dinosaurs dominated the land for over 160 million years.  This database on the Natural History Museum website provides a vast amount of ready-to-use background information about a vast range of dinosaurs.  Try beginning with the Dino Top 5 - Stegosaurus,  Tyrannosaurus, Diplodocus, Coelyphylis and Tryceratops.  What did they look like?  How big (or small) were they?  Where might they have lived?  What did they eat?  Who might eat them?  Children might choose their favourite type of dinosaur, find out all they can and then  create a model, poster and/or Who am I? riddle, using the facts that they have learned.

Jurassic Coast learning resources

Much evidence of dinosaur activity in Britain originates from the Jurassic Coast in Dorset.  This website provides plenty of information, but also includes at least one fun activity you might adapt for use with children.  

Palaeontologists over centuries have collected evidence of dinosaurs from rocks and beaches, sometimes discovering fossilised remains, sometimes finding other traces - the stories of what happened between dinosaurs - in the form of footprints.   Dinosaur footprint trackways show us evidence of where dinosaurs used to travel and how they used to live.  In 'Dinosaur Footprint Mystery', children use their imagination to create a series of dinosaur footprint trackways to tell the story of a gruesome dinosaur fight!

Mary Anning's story - cartoon

Mary Anning is famous for being a largely self-taught fossil hunter.  She was born in Victorian times and grew up on the Jurassic coast in Dorset, where she hunted for and sold fossils to support her family after her father died. 

This cartoon tells her story in some detail, but you might select the parts of the story most useful in setting the scene for a fossil hunt.  At KS1, keep it simple.  Bury some stale and some fresh choc-chip cookies in a large sand tray.  Provide a selection of  tools that the children might use to help them retrieve a 'rock' from the 'beach'.  Back at their workshop benches children painstakingly remove the 'fossils' (choc-chips) from their chosen 'rock', using tools such as lolly sticks or cocktail sticks and paintbrushes to remove traces of biscuit from each fossilised remain.   Discuss: Did each rock contain the same number of fossils?  Were some of the rocks easier to work with than others?  What could those fossils be?  How did Mary Anning collect and clean the fossils she collected?

This is a lovely cross-curricular activity, which can be linked to how dinosaurs became extinct. Many animals are in danger of becoming extinct for different reasons to the dinosaurs, but this in itself could provide fruit for an interesting classroom discussion. Children learn about endangered species by creating there own interactive museum. Children could draw pictures of animals or bring in soft toys to represent endangered animals, finding out about what they eat, how many offspring they have, what kind of habitat they live in nad why they might be in danger of becoming extinct. Lots of this will link into work on life-cycles in the later years of primary education. They can invite parents and carers in to come and learn more about endangered animals,  being guides showing them around exhibits in their museum. This activity provides lots of opportunities for teamwork, communication, problem-solving, creative-thinking.

This extremely catchy song is a lovely way to get children excited about the work of a paleontologist and what they do. It could lead to practical work on many of the activities above, or children role-play paleontologists discovering fossils in a dance/drama activity. Be warned, this will be a difficult one to stop singing!

Looking for fun and educational dinosaur activities for kids ? Right this way! After over a year of my oldest child being completely obsessed with dinosaurs 24/7 I’m practically a paleontologist.

Okay, okay not really. But I did learn how to incorporate dinosaurs into every aspect of our homeschool. Read on for dinosaur books and activities for reading, math, cooking, the arts, and science. It’s really all about the science.

Dinosaurs for Kids!

A unit study for kindergarteners, preschoolers, homeschoolers, and dinosaur lovers of all ages.

When my oldest was three he would sweetly creep into our bed in the morning, crawl up to my face, and whisper dinosaur facts. “Tyrannosaurs Rex has a head as big as a refrigerator.”

The topics have changed, but dinosaurs is where it all started. We spent a solid year learning all about dinosaurs. It was a little like the child-led unit study that would never end… But my son loved it and learned a LOT. That’s what matters most.

Interest led, curriculum supported, Secular Homeschool

I love using unit studies in our homeschool. Most of our learning is interest led and curriculum supported, and I tend to choose products created by homeschoolers .

However, when I started to research dinosaurs I came across some *interesting* materials that are not based in science. On this page you will find only secular science resources for your dinosaur unit .

Books About Dinosaurs for Kids

When I let the oldest loose in the library, we hit the dinosaur section first every. single. time.We get a different a Dougal Dixon dinosaur book  almost every week. A great introduction to the vast variety of dinosaurs, their features, habitats, and varying sizes. 

These large picture books books are fairly short and easy to read . If your kid loves non-fiction dino books, these won’t make you want to go extinct before bedtime.

Vocabulary – Reading and learning about dinosaurs will expand your child’s vocabulary beyond what you can imagine.  Use the real words. If they know meat-eater and plant-eater, they can also learn carnivore and herbivore . Don’t worry if you have no idea how to pronounce the words. We learned a lot of pronunciation from tv and movies. My kids have a lot of fun correcting me.

Dinosaur Themed Easy Readers

Introducing leveled readers into your unit study is a fantastic idea! Your child will love to read books that suit their interests. Plus, they will be building their reading confidence! Your child will begin to recognize the new vocabulary in their readers in the other picture books and texts you are looking at together!

For sensitive children:

Be sure to preread if you have a sensitive little learner. When the oldest was three, he rationalized the more violent pictures by telling himself that the dinosaurs were eating the “sleeping dinosaur’s boo-boo.”  Aw. We also had a lot of talks about how a meteor is not going to hit the earth again and cause us all to go extinct.

Dinosaur Math Activities

Our collection of dinosaurs has grown exponentially. We used them as manipulatives for math this week and found out we are up to 101 dinosaurs. They are taking over the Earth again, starting with our house.

A few ideas:

• Count your dinosaurs
• Make sets of 2, 5, or 10 with your dinosaurs
• Skip count using your sets
• Add and subtract using dinosaurs
• Create a pattern with color (or herbivore, herbivore, carnivore)
• Sort dinos by size, color, pattern, or attributes

It led to discussion about how dinosaur fossils have been discovered under many layers of sand, dirt, and rock , how the earth has changed since the time of the dinosaurs, and what a fossil hunter and archaeologist do.

All while stuffing our faces with pudding and graham crackers and rice krispie treats. It doesn’t get better than that.

Dinosaur music.

We love Marc and Neil Sedaka’s  Dinosaur Pet . We got this as a gift when my oldest was two. The book comes with a CD – an adorable rendition of Neil Sedaka’s Calendar Girl reworked to teach the months of the year with a bit of dino humor (always appreicated).

Waking Up is Hard to Do also includes this song and is one of the least annoying children’s music cd’s I’ve heard.

Dinosaur Arts, Crafts, and Motor Skills

Oh the Dinosaur crafts. We probably have 101 of these, too. Some of my favorites were making dinosaur skeletons out of q-tips on black paper , making fossil imprints in playdoh , and cut and paste dinos made from geometric shapes .

But the most hilarious project was the frozen dinosaurs in ice . I laughed so hard watching the kids trying to get those suckers out. After picking and rubbing wasn’t working fast enough, they resorted to smashing them on the concrete.

And of course we had to try a dinosaur sensory bin . Let me tell you, it seems like a good idea until they start mixing the moon sand with the water and all the sudden you have children covered in batter.

Not like the adorable, Pinterest-worthy angel children on the blogs where I found these activities. But way funnier. Always funnier.

Dinosaur Activities to Work on Gross Motor Development

After you’ve learned about some different dinosaurs it’s fun to turn into one. Work those little muscles with crawling, stomping, reaching, and imitating dino features. Some fun ones:

There are more dinosaur shows and episodes than we could ever watch. Here are a few that they’ve asked for over and over:

Field Trips

Check out local museums for dinosaur exhibits, shows, and special events. I’ve seen several traveling exhibits come through our area, and we have a local museum with a  long-term exhibit and movie.

I highly recommend Dinosaur World if you live near Plant City, FL. Coupon There are also locations in Texas and Kentucky. Adding those to our travel plans ASAP along with the Field Museum in Chicago to meet Sue.

If you can’t get to a museum just dump last night’s chicken bones in the sandbox at any local park. 

No. That is NOT okay. Don’t do that!

How about bringing some plastic dino toys for a sandbox dig at the park or just hide your chicken bones in your own garden. Better yet, just tell your kids there are fossils in the yard and point them toward the weeds.

Guaranteed they will find a fossil. So what if it’s just a rock? There’s nothing wrong with inspiring some creative play .

Dinosaur themed home learning tasks for Nursery or Reception (Early Years) There are a total of 18 activities that can easily be done at home split over two sheets. Activities are practical using items children will have at home. There are key questions to guide parents delivering the activities at home. The activities are topic based. They cover all areas of the EYFS curriculum. There are art projects, research ideas, movement, imaginative etc. There aren’t really stand alone phonics or number activities but these subjects are addressed in other activities e.g. where writing, stories, counting, size or measuring weights are involved. Originally made for Covid school/ bubble closures and where children were asked to complete 3 tasks a week, however, it could be easily used as a half termly or termly home learning sheet where children complete one task a week or similar.

This can also be used as a basis for activity planning for the topic or used by support or cover staff.
