Conflict Essay Topics: Conflict is a natural part of life and is almost unavoidable in any relationship. No matter what we do, it is inevitable that at some point in time, we will have a conflict with someone. However, it is important to remember that regardless of the situation, it is always possible to resolve a conflict in some constructive or meaningful way. In this essay, we shall explore the meaning of conflict, its causes, types, implications and more.

How Do You Define a Conflict?

Conflict can be defined as a disagreement with somebody about something. It can also be defined as a disagreement in thought, opinion, belief, action, inaction or even an emotion. There are also many variations of conflict that we encounter in our day to day lives such as physical conflict, emotional conflict, and intellectual conflict.

What are the Various Types of Conflict?

There are four major types of conflict, and they are as follows:

Intrapersonal Conflict: Intrapersonal conflict is a struggle within oneself. Most people face some kind of internal conflict. This conflict is about who we are and what we want to be. Some examples of internal conflict include: not knowing if you want to be a business person or a stay at home parent, deciding whether or not to go to college, and deciding whether you should pursue someone that you might have feelings for. Moreover, people with social anxiety or depression might be more prone to intrapersonal conflict because they feel like they cannot trust their own feelings and thoughts and this can lead to mental distress.

Interpersonal Conflict: Interpersonal conflict is a state of disagreement between two or more people. It can be either constructive or destructive, and it can be either short-term or long-term. There are many reasons why people may experience interpersonal conflict with others. Some of these include differing opinions, not being able to find common ground, misunderstanding the other person’s perspective, feeling threatened by the other person, and feeling powerless to influence the situation or being unfairly treated.

Intragroup Conflict: Intragroup conflict is a type of interpersonal conflict that occurs within a group. Intragroup conflicts often involve disagreements, tension, and power struggles between group members. The dynamics of intragroup conflict are rooted in the idea that people are intrinsically selfish. The natural tendency for people to act in their own self-interests can lead to conflict within groups. If one individual’s self-interests clash with another person’s self-interests, there is the risk of conflict.

Intergroup Conflict: Intergroup conflict is a type of collective disagreement that is motivated by clashes between two or more groups. In a global context, intergroup conflicts can take other forms, such as violent riots and wars between nations. Intergroup conflict is a serious problem in many parts of the world, which often leads to death and destruction.

What are the 8 Common Causes of Conflict?

It is difficult to predict what will cause conflict. It can be anything from a misunderstanding to a breach of trust. Conflict can even arise out of nothing, but there are some common causes of conflict. These include:

Unclear expectations : It is not uncommon for people to feel frustrated when they are unclear about expectations. This can lead to conflicts because it becomes less clear who is responsible for doing what. However, if expectations are clearly stated, you can avoid many of these conflicts and create a more productive environment.

Lack of communication: In a business setting, lack of communication can lead to misunderstandings between employees. For example, an employee might be unhappy with their role in the company or confused about their job description when the boss never directly mentions it. Furthermore, when employees are unclear about what they are being asked to do, they are bound to make mistakes.

Lack of trust: There are many ways to construct norms of trust in communities. One way is to draw on existing ties or social mechanisms. Another way is to engage in social transactions with strangers. Conflict arises when there are different normative approaches to establishing trust—one based on similarity and the other based on distance.

The loss of power : Many relationships can fall apart when the power balance shifts. When one person loses their job, for example, it can cause resentment and frustration to grow. They may feel that they’re not pulling their weight in the relationship and be resentful towards the other person who is still working. This can lead to a dramatic shift in both dynamics and communication patterns which could eventually lead to conflict.

Lack of respect for one another can cause conflict: One of the main reasons for conflict is a lack of respect. This can happen when one person feels they are not given the respect they deserve by another person. This often leads to anger, resentment, and even violence.

Conflicting interests: Conflicts of interest are common. These conflicts arise when the goals of the individual, group, or company are not aligned with other parties involved.

Personal differences: There are many potential causes of conflict in relationships. One factor that often gets overlooked is the personal differences between people. Understandably, people have different backgrounds, levels of education, interests, and life experiences which can lead to conflict.

Disagreements over values: Values are a major part of our identity. We have them because they help us decide what we want to do and who we want to be. They can be very personal and individualistic, but they can also help us connect with people. Regardless, disagreements over values can cause conflict when it comes to fulfilling certain roles in a society or family unit.

Conflict Essay

How Do People React to Conflicts?

People usually react to conflicts in one of the following ways:

Trying to calm the situation: When faced with a conflict, the person may try to stop the conflict by trying to calm the situation. The person may also attempt to diffuse the tension by changing the subject of conversation or attempting humour.

Withdrawing from the conflict: People may attempt to avoid a conflict by withdrawing from it. This can help to prevent the escalation of the conflict, which might cause greater harm.

Trying to compromise: Finding a compromise is a useful technique to solve a conflict. Compromising means giving up a little of something so that all involved parties can achieve what they want. We can also say that it means that the interests of both parties are met as much as possible, but may still have some space for disagreement or resistance.

Trying to win the conflict: This is usually the initial agenda for all parties involved in a conflict.

Regardless, conflicts are inevitable, but they can always be managed if they are dealt with in a constructive way.

What are the 6 Difficulties in Resolving a Conflict?

Following are some difficulties that one may face when resolving a conflict:

  • Unwilling to Take Responsibility – No one wants to admit they made a mistake as people are unwilling to take responsibility. This stems from the belief that admitting fault will tarnish their reputation. It can also stem from the fear of being ridiculed for taking responsibility for something that wasn’t their fault.
  • Resentment – Resentment can affect the way we approach a conflict. Resentment is often a product of feeling unheard, which can make it difficult to listen and compromise with another person.
  • Lack of Patience: One’s action or reaction in the heat of the moment can have unintended consequences. This can prevent involved parties from finding a solution that meets their needs.
  • Low Self-Esteem : This can cause a conflict to remain unresolved. It can be caused by many factors, including abuse, bullying or harassment. Moreover, low self-esteem can often lead to more serious conditions such as depression and anxiety.
  • Disrespect : Disrespect can lead to an escalation in conflicts. This is because it may make people feel like they are not being respected and this can lead to aggression and violence.
  • Unwilling to Accept Weakness: There are many reasons people may be unwilling to accept weakness. Some people cannot accept their weaknesses because they believe it will make them feel like a failure. They may also not want to admit that they need help, or that what they’re struggling with is more than what they can handle on their own. Regardless, this can hamper the process of conflict resolution.

“… Conflict is a big part of the story and it makes the story interesting. Without conflict, the story seems plain and there’s no flare to get people to want to read it or enjoy it. Some authors use man against himself, man against nature, man against society, and man against man.”

This essay explains why conflict is integral for stories , mentioning that it makes a literary piece exciting enough to maintain the readers’ attention. The author uses Richard Connell’s “ The Most Dangerous Game ” to prove their point and delves into relevant scenes demonstrating different conflicts. For example, the scene where the main character fights against the big waves to reach the island for safety exemplifies the conflict of Man against Nature.

“The film is an excellent example of the perspective of conflict, every scene is thoughtful, and reflects the discrimination and exploitation that the working class society faces.”

The author offers several citations to support their claim that the 1997 Titanic film is more than a romantic tragedy. Putting Rose and Jack’s love story aside, the movie also depicts the differences between social classes that link them to conflict theory. According to the founder of this theory, the leading cause of conflicts is the unequal distribution of power and resources among people.

The essay brings up several film segments that cement these differences, such as the standard rule of “women and children first” when evacuating people during a disaster. Although the tragedy claimed the lives of both lower and upper-class men, the movie conveys an important message that everyone will suffer, regardless of class, in times of calamity.

“The Middle East has been in a state of turmoil since the early 1990’s. Conflicts arose from differences in religion, control over territories, and uneven political distribution. These conflicts were not just between countries, but also within individual countries.”

Although this essay doesn’t reveal the root cause of conflicts in the Middle East, it shows the magnitude of the impact of these fights caused by religious differences, territorial disputes , and political inequality. Logan explains that government instability in the Middle East makes it possible for various terrorist to express their grievances and desires through violence.

“As you start your married life, know that conflicts are a must and communication is the key to solving such issues. When married people see the need to manage interpersonal conflicts rather than ignoring them, their marriage becomes functional and happy.”

Couples usually avoid conflicts in their relationships, but Taylor knows it’s inevitable. A relationship without interpersonal conflict can become weak and often leads to separation. He believes that people who ignore problems to avoid conflicts with their partners develop negative emotions that destroy love. Taylor explains that bringing one’s gender and culture into the conversation is the key to resolving disputes , as it prevents miscommunication and demonstrates equal power.

“By better understanding how conflict arise, and practicing handling such conflict in an assertive way, it can become far less intimidating and be an aspect of work you can learn to manage rather than have it manage you.”

Latoya’s essay focuses on how Chinese people avoid conflicts to promote peace and avoid discord, especially workplace disagreements . She describes workplace conflict as work-related or personal tension between two or more forces with differing values and perspectives.

Latoya mentions three techniques to clear up these issues: stimulating, controlling, and resolving and eliminating disputes . Ultimately, the author believes that every manager must maintain emotional distance and focus on conflict resolution by listening, empathizing, and guiding members who have conflicts.

Discord is part and parcel of life. At a time when the nation is so divided, schools must do more to help students manage conflict. How can schools empower students to resolve conflicts with peers or adults?

Problem-solving is an emotion-regulation strategy of taking action to directly address an emotional situation. Think about 14-year-old Padma talking to a peer who called her names about how sad she felt. Or 17-year-old Alejandro encouraging his classmates to put more effort into their group project after being pressured to do the heavy lifting. Problem-solving empowers students to take charge of their emotional needs . It can increase students’ self-efficacy in problem resolution and prevent similar situations from happening again.

A powerful problem-solving tool for conflict resolution is students’ expressing their emotional needs to peers or adults in a clear and civil manner. Consider 16-year-old Chris, who feels angry and advocates his need for an apology from a peer who shoved him in the hallway. Or 13-year-old Max, who feels excluded and shares their need for meaningful social interactions. There are five evidence-based steps to problem-solving.

5 Problem-Solving Questions for Conflict Resolution

  • What is the problem? Students state how they feel and perceive the situation. ”I” statements are a helpful communication tool for students to state behavior that bothers them without sounding unkind. For example, Chris can say, “I feel annoyed when you shove me without apologizing because it hurts.” Or Padma may say, “I feel sad when you call me fat because it puts me down.” Unlike “you” statements, “I” statements enable students to express their emotions and concerns without others shutting down.
  • What are the solutions? Students identify what they need from the situation . They come up with different action steps that others can take to remedy the situation. For instance, Padma may expect an apology or want the name-calling to stop. Max may expect an invite to a social activity or want to tag along.
  • What are the consequences? Students assess the helpfulness of each action step . What is good about this action step? What might be bad about this action step? Students choose an action step that is specific, reasonable, and doable for others. For example, Chris may want his peer to never push him, but accidents may occur in a crowded hallway. Alejandro may prefer his classmates to finish the remaining work themselves, but they may not know what to do, resulting in a bad grade for the group project.
  • What is the best solution? Students state what they need out of the situation. ”I” statements are an effective communication tool in this case for students to state how others can meet their needs without sounding coercive. For instance, Max can say, “Can I go with you to the movies?” Or Alejandro may say, “I need us to work together on this project. Would you help write up the results?”
  • What is the result? Students determine the helpfulness of their solution . If it is helpful, the problem is resolved. If it is not helpful, students could retry by returning to step one and perhaps enlist an adult they trust at school to problem-solve with them.

However, problem-solving requires time and effort to generate, select, and enact solutions. Problem-solving can also lead to frustration when the solution, or some part of it, is not within students’ control. Imagine that 18-year-old Cody, who feels trapped and is being made the subject of rumors, asks others to stop spreading or fueling them, but he has little control over their behavior. So, if students are fatigued or solutions are beyond their control, they should try other emotion regulation strategies (e.g., cognitive reframing, distraction, emotional support seeking) in tandem.

Conflict resolution through these problem-solving strategies is one way to help students manage minor disagreements with classmates. More serious disputes may require some degree of adult intervention. The bottom line is that all students should feel safe and accepted at school, no matter their race, gender, language, religion, or ability, especially amid the current contentious social-political landscape, and educators have to take steps to create this inclusive, welcoming environment.

Conflict at Workplace

Workplace is generally the most stressful environment in anybody’s life and lots of conflicts arise there. In fact, conflicts are part of workplaces. At workplace, conflict can occur between employees or between the employer and employee, between the supervisor and team leader, or it can be between team leader and their team.

Reasons for conflict: Normal reasons for conflicts are pride, ego, and jealousy factors also or there is one more important point of conflict that is somebody’s terrible day. Different moods also cause conflict. And compensation at the workplace is also one being the major reason for conflict. These all points become the conflict reasons these days. Not only at workplace but also in another environment. If somebody has a feeling of jealousy against others, they always try to hide that feeling with the arguments, and those arguments then turn to a serious discussion whose ends become difficult to find. Same in case of mood factors. If somebody is just mad for personal reason and the day he started is with a very bad star he will the part of an argument for the rest of whole day. He will try to transfer his anger to somebody else by shouting at them and will become the reason for the conflict.

Causes of Conflict at the Workplace: Partiality

Partiality is one of the major causes of conflict at the workplace. For example, in a workplace if a person is leading the team and his own relative or very close friend is also working in that team, he always tries to be more helpful and supportive with his known one. These will create the jealousy factor between other team members of the team. They will feel that they are not important for the workplace, with this feeling of unwanted and partiality negative thoughts can be arising in their minds and it causes conflicts between the team member and with their team leader.

Miscommunication: miscommunication is also a big reason for conflict in the workplace. Sometimes it happens that in a conversation a person always misunderstands whatever the other wants to say. And this misunderstanding creates conflict at workplaces.

Resolution: resolving a conflict is a big thing, it is a sensitive matter. To resolve arguments a person needs to be very calm and full of patience. Because in conflicts everybody has a different opinion and they always stick to their points, any person who is solving that issue needs to listen to both end points and then needs to decide accordingly. The following steps can be taken to resolve the issue.

Communication When Solving Conflict

Approach the conflict with an open mind: always be open-minded. When solving the issue or any argument just listen to the whole matter carefully and decide accordingly that none of the feelings get hurt. We need to understand that every person has different points of view. They think accordingly so always try to listen to their sides also. First step: don’t wait for the situation to become worse. Take steps to go first. try to solve that issue with communication. Try to control emotions: try to control emotions in conversation. Don’t be a drama queen, don’t show crocodile tears, don’t play the blame game. It does not protect anything, it will ruin everything. The situation will become worse than it is. Always stay focused at one point, control the emotions, don’t let the emotions control you. Don’t assume anything: If someone says something, don’t just take it according to your assumption. Double-check before jumping to conclusion. Try to clear the doubt. Always try to be positive. Think about what is for you. Every conflict has differences as you start arguing. Try to change the way you speak and use a more polite way to resolve the issue that is going to show a positive effect on you. The more you discuss, the more you progress. Don’t be afraid of accepting mistakes. Always be ready for an apology. Try to solve the conflict with these simple excuses and learn to use the word ‘its ok’.

Arguably, not every society in the world can avoid conflict. In fact, conflict is part of human nature. Conflict among organizations and individuals is an unavoidable aspect of daily life. Many scholars assert that conflict is inevitable. Perhaps, understanding how it escalates and starts entails progressive strategy in using it to the advantage of those concerned. Conflict refers to a situation in which groups and people think, or have incompatible goals and objectives. Conflict is a wide concept, but many people belief only violence and war is conflict. However, conflict takes place in all levels of society and in all situations. Generally, organizations, individuals and people experience various types of conflicts every day (Philips, 2007).

As a matter of fact, conflict escalation is a steady regression from immature and mature level of various emotional developments. Certainly, the psychological course develops from one step to another. Conflict escalates in various stages, and each stage has various characteristics. Some conflict escalates for a good course; good relationship face at times conflict. In most case, parties look for solutions cooperatively and objectively. Furthermore, ways that conflict escalates include complaints, passive resistance, active resistance, assaultive, as well as use of lethal force (Wandberg, 2005).

Undeniably, the organization of society is in a way that it has both root causes and factors that may escalate conflicts. Unjust and unequal treatment of individuals in the community could lead to conflicting situations. For example, if leadership and opportunities in the nation do not represent the members of the entire society (Philips, 2007). Other scholars assert that, conflict is as a result of arithmetical progression of resource supply and geometrical progression in population increase. Due to imbalance in population and resource allocation, individuals will struggle to survive leading to conflict.

Conversably, individual differences in society cause conflict. As a matter of fact, people in society are different in nature and have variation on issues such as ideas, aspirations, attitudes, as well as interest. Therefore, this difference puts them in a situation that they cannot accommodate each other, leading to conflict. Additionally, cultural issues could tremendous cause conflicting situations (O’Rourke & Collins, 2008). Culture differ from one community to another, this variation sometimes causes tension. Among these communities, there are various interests among individuals, making conflict inevitable.

Social change is part of societal growth and progress. Nevertheless, the rate in which social change escalates may lead to the uprising of conflict. In the 21st century, there are various conflicting scenarios between the old norms and the new generations. Conflict expresses a state of social disequilibrium among the parties. Other core causes of conflict include, political discrimination, identity and ethnic affiliation, economic issues, as well, as modernization.

Addressing conflict in society is very important. In fact, addressing conflict is crucial in achieving enhancing productivity, as well as organizational effectiveness. In society, most individuals and organizations suffer from chronic patters of conflicts that have never been resolved. This may cause dysfunction among the conflicting parties. Hence, addressing conflicts resolves issues and ensure that there is normal functioning in the society. Generally, addressing conflict is crucial because it increases productivity, reduces costs, increase collaboration, as well as bringing satisfaction (Wandberg, 2005).

The existence of conflict in an organization, among individuals, and in the government is not a bad thing. Certainly, when conflict is resolved effectively it leads to development and growth at professional and personal level. Nevertheless, effective resolution of conflict creates a difference between negative and positive outcomes. When conflict is resolved effectively, it leads to positive impacts; hence, it justifies on the occurrence of the conflict (Philips, 2007). Effective conflict resolution leads to unbelievable benefits such as increased understanding, group cohesion, and improvement in self-knowledge. The strategies used to effectively resolve conflict, expands the awareness of people on issues, strengthening of bonds, prevent fights, as well as providing them with insights on how to achieve cooperate and personal objectives.

However, poor handling of conflict could lead to a negative outcome. In fact, conflicting objectives may promptly turn to be organizational and personal dislikes. The teamwork among the parties is broken, talent wasted, as well as tremendous decrease in production. Individuals in society should understand and appreciate the existence of competition, and uniqueness. Perhaps, these will lead to collaboration, accommodation and compromising of situation (O’Rourke & Collins, 2008).

In society today, there are various incidences of conflict. In fact, the incident objectively observed demonstrated various aspects of conflict, which include causes, parties’ reactions, as well as strategies to resolve it. The incident took place between management and the employees over working conditions and remunerations. The situation in the workplace was very critical. As a matter of fact, there were few conflict cowards in the group. Every individual wanted his or her views to be heard and considered. The entire group of employees were united in airing their views; many of them were furious because they had addressed their problem to the management team, but their problems were not solved.

The conflicts in the workplace were caused by various reasons. The management team and the employees differed in addressing priorities; the management placed higher priorities to the progress of the company more than the priorities of the m employees. Additionally, the methods of promotions and awarding process in the company were not equally carried out. Therefore, it developed a lot of tension among the employees and the management team. Moreover, the conflicting groups complained of various organizational issues, which in one way or another escalated conflicts. The organizational factors included budget, management, long working hours, leadership. Adherence to core values, disagreements, as well as financial problems. Other core issues that were observable were poor communications, differences in interests, and personality clashes (Wandberg, 2005).

The main parties on the workplace conflict focused in resolving the conflict through communication. The management team elaborated on improving various organizational practices. Perhaps, they established the cause of the problem and established subordinate goals, minimized authorities of management as well as improving policies. The tension among the parties was very high, but the few individuals who were against negative conflicts acted and tried to make the parties reach a consensus. Furthermore, the organization made changes on human resource department that will focus on analyzing internal problems. Ultimately, the remuneration agreement was arrived at.

Undeniably, the deals made during conflict resolution process eased the tension, and the parties came to a compromising position. Despite the efforts, others were still emotional and could not accept some terms. As a matter of fact, it is very difficult to convince everyone in a conflict situation. The employees and management have different priorities, personalities as well as interests O’Rourke, J & Collins, S. (2008). The ultimate decision that was focused on was to involve the employees in setting the appropriate remuneration percentage, which will affect the company and employees equally. The most important strategy in making the entire decisions was to reduce tension and encourage communication. The cost of conflict should not outweigh the entire progress of the organization; hence, management team should focus on preventing conflict to escalate further. Conflict is part of human life and should always be handled with great care.

O’Rourke, J & Collins, S. (2008). Managing Conflict and Workplace Relationship. London: John Wiley & Sons.

Philips, G. (2007). The Conflict. New Jersey: Echo Press. Wandberg, R. (2005). Conflict Resolution: Communication, Cooperation, Compromise. New York: Wadsworth.
