Initially, cricket was a sport dominated by players from British countries and their colonies. Back then famous cricketers were Don Bradman, Jack Hobbs, Jim Laker, and many more. Don Bradman continues to hold the record of highest average of 99.9 in a test match. Jim Laker was the first player to capture all 10 wickets in an inning in a test match and also capture 19 wickets in an inning.

In contemporary times legacy has been continued by young players of independent countries which were once British colonies. Here India has performed remarkably. Indian players such as Suni Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and many more have left their mark. Gavaskar was the first cricketer to score 10000 runs in test cricket and he also broke Don Bradman’s record of 29 centuries. Kapil dev on the other hand never bowled a no-ball. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of 51 centuries in test cricket.

Cricketers like these keep the spirit of sportsmanship alive and continue to maintain the status of this noble sport as a “Gentleman’s Game”.

An English Essay Cricket Match Formats

In this part of the essay on cricket matches, the formats are going to be discussed:

Test Cricket

It is the form of cricket that has the longest duration and is generally considered the highest standard in the game of cricket. Here, between the two teams, each team plays a match of two innings and one single match usually lasts up to five days. It is like a trial of levels of endurance among teams and their abilities. Australia currently holds the top rank in the ICC Test Championship.

One Day International (ODI) Cricket

The ODI is the next form in this cricket match essay in English. Here, the overs of the match are limited. ODIs are played between two international teams, each playing for 50 overs. One such example of an ODI match in cricket is the Cricket World Cup, which is generally held once in four years. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for most runs and centuries in the history of ODI cricket with 18,426 runs made.

Twenty 20 Cricket (T20)

It is a shortened format of a cricket match. Professionally, it was first introduced in 2003 by the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). In a match of T20 cricket, each team has single innings and the limit of overs in the match is 20. A typical match of T20 cricket has a duration of 3 hours. Australia holds the top ranking in the ICC T20 International Championship with ratings of 275.

These are the three forms in which general cricket matches are played internationally as recognized by the ICC (International Cricket Council). This essay on cricket matches covers all three main variations.

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Note when Writing an Essay on Cricket for Lower Primary Classes

‘my favorite game is cricket’ essay for children, short essay on ‘cricket’, long paragraph on ‘cricket’ for kids, what your child will learn from the essay on ‘cricket’.

When it comes to a sport in India that’s loved by everyone, there’s only one that truly stands out, and that’s Cricket! Cricket’s become more of a religion, where every house has a few members who just can’t get enough of the game. So, it’s really no surprise that teachers will ask the students to write an essay on cricket, as practice. Essay writing is an important skill students need to learn, so they can organize their thoughts and present them coherently. Cricket is a topic most students will love to write about, since they themselves will have so much to share! In this article, you can look at how to write an essay on Cricket in English, for classes 1,2 and 3, with increasing difficulty levels.

Remember these important tips before you write a paragraph on cricket:

  • Cricket is a sport that most people know and love. Therefore, give more weightage to the ‘feel’ of playing the game rather than obvious facts.
  • When writing short-form essays, keep the details about the sport very simple.
  • When wiring short essays concentrate on why cricket is your favorite game, merge the introduction and conclusion with the first and last paragraphs.
  • When writing a long-form essay, split the words into an introduction, the main body of the essay, and a conclusion.
  • Start the introduction with some simple facts about the game, and talk about relatable aspects in the body of the essay. Conclude with a summary of how cricket evolved.

The essay for class 1 and class 2 students are often in the form of one-line essays. These are easy to write and build the foundation for essay writing. Here is an example of a 10-line essay on cricket:

  • Cricket is truly the most popular sport in India, and is an outdoor game that is enjoyed by everyone.
  • The game is played by two teams of 11 players, each with a bat and a ball.
  • Cricket is usually played in a big playground. But people love it so much that small teams and groups play it on the roads and wherever there is enough space!
  • Cricket is also my favorite sport to watch. I always sit and watch cricket with my family.
  • In the evenings I go out to play cricket with my friends. We can play cricket all day without getting bored.
  • My favorite cricket player is Virat Kohli. He is inspiring and one of the best cricket players in the world.
  • In cricket, I am good at batting and bowling. I always get the first chance to bat when I play with my friends.
  • I got a cricket set for my birthday last year, and I clean it and take care of it every day.
  • It is everyone’s dream to become a top cricketer and play for the Indian cricket team.
  • Someday I am sure I will become the best cricketer in my school.

A small paragraph on cricket is a simple essay. Children can write about what makes cricket their favorite game and some general facts about the sport. Here is an example for a short cricket essay:

Cricket is my favorite sport in the world. It is played by everyone in my school and every school in the country. It is the most exciting game in the country, and everybody loves watching cricket matches. Indian people have so much zest for cricket that they can play it anywhere – in small fields, roads, gullies, and anywhere they can bowl and bat! I never get tired of playing cricket, and it is the only game we play after school and during the holidays.

Although cricket is the most beloved game in the country, its origins are in England. Two teams play the game with 11 players each. The team that wins the toss can then make the choice to bat or to bowl. Two players from the batting team are on the pitch while 11 players from the opposing team surround them in the field. People who play cricket outside the fields don’t always have 11 players each. When I play with my friends, the group splits into two teams. If only 8 friends show up to play, each team will have 4 boys.

To summarize, cricket is a game loved by children and adults alike. Whether it is played in a stadium or on the street, the thrill of the game is always high.

While writing long essays, it’s important to have the content pre-planned to maintain the narrative. Here is an example of a long paragraph essay on cricket for class 3:

If you live in India, chances are you are a huge cricket fan! No other game in the country is as loved, or no other sport is as popularly played as cricket. Despite originating in England, cricket found its home in modern-day India. This game was once played by high-ranking officials, expats, and royalty. Now it is the most played sport in stadiums, playgrounds, and even the local streets!

Cricket’s popularity in the media is also one of the reasons the game became so successful in the country. Every young boy, at some point, would have dreamed of becoming a cricket superstar who plays for the Indian cricket team. Not surprisingly, the competition to join the regional, state, and national teams is also high. All schools have cricket teams and cricket clubs that play in the Interschool competitions. Outstanding players also become little celebrities in schools, colleges, and institutions. Everybody loves the person in class who can play great cricket!

Coming to the game, cricket is played by two teams with 11 players each. The match is set in a large stadium, and the captain from each team steps forward for the coin toss. The winning team can choose to bat or to bowl. The batting team sets a score that the bowling team has to chase. The game is watched by thousands of spectators on the venue and millions more on TV. Over the years, cricket duration has changed from 50 overs to 20 overs.

The sport attracts many people and is loved by everyone. Children play it in the streets while grownups play it in the playgrounds. The game has almost a magical allure to people of all ages. Every time a match is going on, everybody wants to stay updated on the scores of their favorite team. Whether it is a victory or a loss, the fans take it personally. Families spend a lot of quality time together glued to the TV while kids get plenty of healthy exercise playing cricket outdoors. In the recent past, even women’s cricket teams have gained popularity showing just how much everybody loves it.

Cricket is a favorite essay topic among many students as it is a fun game they can relate to. By studying these essays, they can learn how to write about the game in the form of an interesting essay. The examples show how facts about the game can be combined with the perspective of the players to write a highly relatable essay.

Cricket is a game that is loved by all. An essay on this topic should cover basic facts about the game, and little details that people who have played the game can relate to. As an essay writing topic, cricket is a highly enjoyable topic, and the examples above give students a clear idea about how to write an essay that readers can enjoy.

Essay 1 (250 Words) – Cricket and its Important Rules

Introduction

Cricket is a popular sport played throughout the globe. It was invented in the late 16 th century in England and since then has gained popularity with today over 2 billion fans spread across the globe. The game is played with very few types of equipment over a rectangular piece of land.

How is Cricket Played

The game of cricket is played with a ball and a bat. It is played between two teams having 11 players each. The teams take their turn to subsequently bat and ball. The team that chose to bat sends its two players (batsmen) to the field while the remaining waits for their turn, outside the field. The bowler of the opposite team bowls to hit the wicket, while the batsman hits the ball to score runs. The rest 10 players of the bowling team occupy the field. When the first inning gets over, the bowling team takes to batting and the batting team takes to field.

Some Important Rules

The rules of the game of cricket are specified in a code called the Laws of Cricket. There are 42 laws known to be drafted as early as 1744 and is presently maintained by the Marylebone Cricket Club in London. In the center of the field, there should be a rectangular pitch measuring 22 yards from wicket to wicket. Every over in cricket has six ball deliveries. After every over, the bowlers are rotated. Batsmen score runs until they are bowled and send off the field.

Cricket is an extremely popular game played throughout the globe. Played with simple equipment it has a definite set of rules yet the sheer talent of the players and fast-changing scenarios during the game’s progress have made it immensely popular.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – History of Cricket and Cricket Team

The game of cricket has become increasingly popular since its evolution centuries ago. The game is supposed to be originated in England during the 16th century and has since then spread to other parts of the world making it the second most popular sport after football.

History of Cricket

The earliest documented reference to the cricket was made during a legal case trial at Guildford, Surrey, England on 27 th January 1598.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

Essay on A Cricket Match 500 Words in English

Below we have provided a Cricket Match Essay in English, written in easy and simple words for class 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

“Cricket to us was more than play; it was a worship in the summer sun.” ~ Edmund Charles Blunden

Two things have made their place in the heart of Indians forever; Shahrukh Khan (The King Khan of Bollywood) and the sport of cricket. In our country, cricket is a religion and players like Sachin Tendulkar are considered as god. This game is enjoyed by small children as well as office going adults. It never fails to amuse us. You can find people playing cricket in world-class stadiums as well as on every corner of a not so well-lit street. You can never know which side the match is going to go as nothing is sure till the last ball is bowled.

I remember being the witness to one such nail-biting finish. I’m sure that all cricket enthusiasts would still remember the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) Finale; how all of us were glued to our television screens and were just waiting for the clock to show 7:30 pm! But I was one of the very few lucky ones who got a chance to visit the stadium in Hyderabad and watch the roller coaster of a finale in front of my own eyes.

My family and I live in Delhi, but since my father is such a cricket lover, we had made plans in advance to watch the finale. It was going to be held in Chennai initially, but because of some reasons, the venue was shifted to the city of Hyderabad. We purchased the match tickets as soon as they went online. All of the thousands of tickets that were available were sold within a record -breaking time of 2 minutes.

That is a mere 120 seconds, just think about it! But then, this is something that one can expect when the two teams playing head-on against each other were Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. The match was indeed a clash of the Titans. We landed at the Hyderabad airport and checked into our hotel. After taking a short 2- hour nap, we took a cab and set out for the stadium. There was so much traffic. It felt as if every person in the city was going to the stadium.

Our tickets were double-checked at the entry gate, and we then reached our seats. The stadium felt so lively and was full of people cheering and supporting their favourite team. I doubt if even one seat would have been empty! We were waiting for the toss to start while my father went to bring some snacks and cold drinks for my sister and me. Rohit Sharma, the captain of Mumbai Indians, won the toss and elected to bat first. We all were shouting at the top of our voices and just couldn’t wait for even one more second for the match to begin.

The match started and seemed to favour the yellow side. Mumbai Indians lost some of their crucial wickets early in the game including that of their captain for only 15 runs. Bowlers Deepak Chahar and Imran Tahir seemed to give the blue batsmen a tough time. The supporters of Mumbai Indians had suddenly turned very quiet. But then came Kieron Pollard and struck a new hope for his side. He played some brilliant shots that went literally through the roof! The blue side posted a score total of 149 runs for a loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. It was now time for the lions of Chennai to work magic with their bat.

The batsmen of Chennai Super Kings started quite well and kept the run rate exceptionally high. But as soon as Faf du Plessis lost his wicket, things started going south for the team. No other batsmen except for Shane Watson was able to perform exceedingly well. Even our favourite helicopter shot hitter, Mahendra Singh Dhoni was run out for only two runs. At the last ball, the Chennai side needed only one run to draw the game and two runs to claim the trophy.

If not anything else, the audience was expecting at least a super over. But one should not merely expect something beforehand when a talented bowler like Lasith Malinga stands with the ball in his hand on the other side. Malinga bowled a superb delivery under so much pressure. He bowled an LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and brought the Mumbai Indians to victory.

200 Words Essay On A Cricket Match

Cricket has gained popularity over the years since it was first played. Cricket, which is now the second most popular sport after soccer, is believed to have originated in England during the 16th century and has since spread throughout the globe.

Cricket matches are more of a festival in India than a typical sporting event. The players give the same effort because there is so much anticipation about India’s matches with other countries.

Watching Live | Recently, the cricket World Cup tournament was held, and as expected, people were more than just excited. We were unable to leave anyone behind, so we visited the stadium to watch the match live. As we were on our way, we saw people hurrying towards their homes to watch the match on their televisions. A group of people were going towards the stadium, just like us, because they wanted to see the match live.

The Match | The match began with a coin toss to determine the batting and fielding teams. The whole stadium was filled with people, and as our team won the toss and the batsmen came to the field, the crowd started to call their names; it sounded like a roar. The entire match gave us goosebumps as our team was performing well, and though the opposition was tough, the boys gave it their best. The game was extremely exciting; players ran, balls flew, and everything else that could possibly happen did.

Celebrations | As our team won, a huge cheer came from the crowd. People were going crazy. Later, after the match celebrations were held, everybody was happy and appreciating the efforts of the team, and the match stayed in the conversation for the rest of the week.

500 Words Essay On A Cricket Match

Cricket is the second-most popular sport in the world. There are 2.5 billion cricket fans worldwide, spread across 180 nations. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most viewed cricket event. The governing body in charge of planning world cup competitions for international cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC).

History Of Cricket

Cricket originated in England as a sport for royals in the 16th century; later, during the colonial period, it was adapted by the rajas and nawabs of India as they came into contact with the British. Eventually, the royals of India started organising matches for their own entertainment in which common people were allowed to participate, which started the enthusiasm for this sport in the country.

How It Is Played

In cricket, two teams of 11 players face off against each other, one batting and one bowling and fielding. The batting and bowling teams are chosen through a coin toss. The field is circular to oval, with the main batting and bowling taking place in the middle of the field, involving two batsmen from one team and a bowler and wicket-keeper from the opposing team, while the remaining nine players hold the ground to prevent the batsmen from scoring. There are two umpires on the ground who judge the decisions.

Cricket In India

In India, cricket is more of a festival than a sport; some even call it a religion. From young to old, men and women, everybody is a fan of cricket in our country. The players that represent our country at the international level and our states and schools at the national and regional level are paid so much respect by everybody. The fanaticism of cricket is so deep that if you ask a child what he wants to be when he grows up, the obvious answer will be that he wants to play cricket.

My Experience Of A Cricket Match

Recently, an inter-school tournament was held, and we got the chance to see our team play. The stadium was packed with both our team's and the opposing team's supporters. Everybody was cheering for their teams.

The Game | The game began with a coin toss to determine which team would bat first. Our team won the toss and chose to bat first, and the opponent team bowled first. Both teams were on the ground as the game began, and on the very first ball, our team captain, who was the opening player, hit a six, and the ball flew out of the boundary. This continued throughout the game; whenever a batsman hit a six or four, the entire stadium and cricket ground erupted in raucous cheers from the crowd.

The Excitement | The match was exciting because it had ups and downs; players got clean hits; there were catches; sneak runs; boundaries; everything enthralled the audience. Even the bowling part of our team was much more exciting than the batting part. Our team scored 150 runs and was successful in stopping the opposing team at 120 runs, so we won. The players were appreciated a lot, and everybody talked about the game for more than a week. The team members later got awarded by our principal and the chief guest.

How is cricket played? A simple illustrated guide

Al Jazeera breaks down cricket terms that will help you understand one of the most widely-played sports in the world.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_1_opening-1696487246

The ninth edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup will take place in the United States and West Indies from June 1 to 29, 2024.

Twenty teams will be competing for a chance to win the glittering silver trophy in Barbados.

Which teams have qualified?

INTERACTIVE - Womens World Cup-Teams-qualified-2023-1716469528

But cricket is a game which has a list of commonly used terms and phrases which might confuse those new to the game.

In this illustrated guide, Al Jazeera breaks down cricket lingo and helps you understand the game beloved by nearly two billion people.

The aim of the game

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_8 teams

Cricket is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams consisting of 11 players each.

The game is divided into two parts known as an innings.

In the first innings, following a coin toss, the first team bats while the other team bowls and fields.

The batting team should try to score the most number of runs in the allotted time, while the bowling team has to try to prevent them from scoring through various means.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_8-Batting team

The bowling team has dedicated bowlers, while the rest of the players spread across the ground try to prevent the batters from scoring runs as well as to catch the ball in order to get the batters out.

In the second innings, the bowling team now gets a turn to bat and try to score more runs than their opposition.

The team with the highest number of runs at the end of the day wins the game.

Three formats in cricket

There are three different formats in cricket, each with its own duration and rules.

Each format has its own defined set of "overs".

An “over” consists of six deliveries by the bowler.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_OVER

A One Day International (ODI) match typically lasts around seven-to-eight hours. Each team is given a total of 300 deliveries, which are divided into 50 overs, to score the most number of runs.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_50OVERS

In a T20 match, which usually lasts three to four hours, each team is given 20 overs (120 balls) to score the most number of runs. This format of the game is designed to be shorter and more fast-paced which provides more excitement for spectators.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_20OVERS

A Test match is the longest and oldest format of the game, played over a maximum of five days. It is considered a test of endurance and skill. Each day has a minimum of 90 overs. Both teams have two innings each.

The cricket field and pitch

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_Cricket field and pitch

Cricket is played in a large oval shaped field typically around 150 metres (492 feet) in diameter at its widest point and surrounded by a boundary rope.

In the centre of the field is the pitch, a rectangular area measuring about 20 metres long (22 yards) and 3 metres (10 feet) wide where most of the action takes place.

At each end of the pitch are three wooden sticks known as wickets or stumps, with two bails atop them.

The batter stands in front of these wickets inside a specified area known as the batting crease. It is from there where he or she will strike the incoming ball from the bowler.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_PITCH_REVISED

During the match, the batting team will actually have two players on the field, each on either end of the pitch to take turns in hitting the ball.

The bowling team meanwhile will have all 11 players scattered throughout the field to minimise the number of runs their opponents can score.

Some of the most common positions are shown below:

How are runs scored?

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_how to score runs

The aim for the batters is to score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball in the gaps between the fielders or over the boundary rope.

To score a run, the batter needs to hit the ball and then together with their batting partner run to the opposite side end of the pitch before the fielder returns the ball, otherwise, they can be run out.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_run scoring

A single run is scored when both batters safely complete one run, a two-run when they complete two runs, and so on.

If a batter hits the ball along the ground and it reaches the boundary rope then four runs are awarded.

To signal that four runs have been scored, the umpire moves his right hand from one side to the other, repeatedly waving it back and forth horizontally.

CRICKET-WIS-IND-2NDTEST

The maximum, six runs, is scored when the batter hits the ball directly over the boundary before it bounces. This shot is the most rewarding but also among the riskiest due to the chances of getting bowled or caught.

To signal a six, the umpire will raise both hands above his head which the fans will often imitate.

How does a player get ‘out’?

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_WAYS TO GET OUT_REVISED

There are several ways to get a batter out with each out referred to as “losing a wicket”.

Since cricket is played with pairs of batsmen, when 10 players from the batting team are dismissed, their innings concludes, and the sum of the runs they scored sets the target score for the bowling team.

The most common ways of getting a player out include:

Bowled: This happens if the batter misses the ball, and it goes on to hit the wicket.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_bowled

Caught: A batter is caught out when they hit the ball and a fielder catches it before it touches the ground.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_caught

Run-Out: A run-out happens when the fielding team throws the ball at the wicket while the batter is trying to score a run and before they can reach the opposite side of the pitch.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_run out

LBW (Leg Before Wicket) : This decision depends on various factors but in a nutshell, a batter can be given out LBW if the ball hits their legs while they are standing in front of the wicket thus preventing the wicket from being hit.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_leg_before_wicket

To signal an "out", the umpire who is standing in the middle of the field will raise his index finger to signify that a batter has been dismissed.

This gesture is often referred to as the umpire has "raised the finger" or "given the finger".

How do you read the score?

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_9_May31_2024-08-1717141938

To follow the score in cricket you need to look at three numbers.

The first is the number of runs a team has scored - the higher the number the better.

The second indicates the number of “outs” or “wickets”. Once 10 players are out then their batting innings comes to an end, so it is important to not play aggressively too early on and try to minimise losing all your players.

Interactive_Illustrated guide to cricket_all out

The third is the number of overs that have been bowled. In an ODI match the maximum is 50.

Combined, a score may look like this:

129-5 (25 overs)

This means that 129 runs have been scored, 5 players are out and 25 overs have been completed.

Typically speaking, batting teams make anywhere from 200 to 400 runs during an ODI match. A score of 200 is considered quite low to defend while 400 runs is usually very strong.

The highest score in ODI cricket was between England and the Netherlands in 2022.

England batted first and scored a massive 498-4 in their 50 overs. In response, the Netherlands only managed 266 runs before losing all 10 of their wickets.

England won by 232 runs.

The scoreboard shows Englands new World Record total for a 50 over International match of 498-4 during the 1st One Day

Here’s a glossary of other commonly used terms in cricket:

All-rounder: An all-rounder is a player who is good at more than just one skill for example batting and bowling or batting and wicket-keeping.

Batter (also, batsman or batswoman): A player who bats the ball. Some batters are good at anchoring the batting team and usually play with moderate pace while other batters are known for unleashing an attacking game by hitting boundaries.

CRICKET-ODI-ENG-NZL/

Bowler : A bowler is a player who is primarily responsible for using their skill with the ball to get the opposing batters out. There are various types of bowlers, such as a fast bowler, a medium-fast bowler, or a spinner. All of them bring with them their own unique skill.

Boundary: The boundary refers to the outer limit of the playing area, often marked by rope. Hitting a ball along the ground over the boundary results in four runs while a shot which crosses the boundary without touching the field scores six runs.

Bowled (or bowl-out) : It is a mode of dismissal, where the bowler hits the wickets with the ball.

India's Jasprit Bumrah is bowled out

Bouncer : A bouncer is a ball which is bowled at a fast pace and is pitched in a way that it rears up at an awkward height, often chest or above, forcing the batter to evade the ball or protect themselves.

Catch: Arguably the most common form of dismissal, if a batter plays a shot which is caught by a fielder anywhere on the field without the ball touching the ground, the batter will be declared caught out.

Circle: On the pitch where batters are batting, there is a 30-yard circle on the ground, which is used to maintain fielding restriction. When powerplays are under way, only a certain number of players can stand inside or outside the circle.

Crease: Refers to the line located 48 inches (1.21 metres) in front of the stumps and denotes the batter’s “safe ground” where he cannot be stumped or run out.

Cricket World Cup: The biggest and most prestigious tournament in cricket, the Cricket World Cup (CWC) is a 50-overs format, also known as One Day International, tournament which takes place every four years.

Duck: If a batter is out without scoring a run, it is called scoring a duck. If he is out on the first ball he faces, it is referred to as a “golden duck”.

Decision Review System (DRS): An electronic review system, available for both batting and fielding teams, in which they can question key decisions made by umpires where a player is declared out or not out. In ODIs, which have two innings, teams are allowed two reviews per innings.

Dot-ball: A delivery where no runs are scored.

Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) Method : A mathematical calculation to calculate target scores when the rain interrupts the match. The formula is used for calculating the target score for a team batting second during a match which is interrupted by weather or any other reasons.

Sri Lanka Asia Cup Cricket

Fielder: A fielding team has one bowler, one wicket-keeper, and nine other players on the field, known as fielders, placed in strategic locations around the field to minimise the number of runs scored by the opposing team.

Free Hit: A free hit is given to a batter if a bowler bowls an illegal ball known as a no-ball. According to the rules, the fielding side cannot change the field arrangements, and on the free-hit delivery, the batter cannot get out with the exception of run out or stumpings.

Hawk-Eye: A modern video technology that is used to aid DRS. It is essentially a computer-generated tracking technology with high-end cameras that track the path of the delivery and predict which way the ball would go. It is a key component of the DRS and all the major ICC-sanctioned tournaments are mandated to use DRS.

ICC: The International Cricket Council is the global governing body for the sport of cricket and is headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Innings: The length of time a team bats is called an innings. In One Day Internationals, a maximum of 50 overs are allowed which constitute one innings.

Leg before wicket (LBW): A form of dismissal in which the ball hits body parts of the batter. The fielding team appeals that the delivery would have hit the stumps if it had not been stopped by the batter’s body. If the umpire makes the decision in favour of the bowling team, it means the batter is out by LBW.

Mushfiqur Rahim

Maiden: If a bowler is able to finish one over (consisting of six deliveries) without conceding a single run, the over is considered a maiden.

No-Ball: Any ball bowled by a bowler which is delivered after overstepping the crease, or bounces above the batter's shoulder height, is declared a no-ball and is declared illegal. A free hit is given to the batting side if a no-ball is delivered.

One Day Internationals: ODIs are the second and once the most popular format of the game, before the advent of T20s. An ODI consists of 50 overs (300 deliveries), with both teams allowed to bat once.

Over: A collection of six legal deliveries bowled by the same bowler consecutively. After the over is complete another bowler must take a turn to bowl.

Partnership: The batting collaboration between two batters working together to score runs for their team while trying to avoid getting dismissed by the opposition.

Pitch: The most important part of the ground, the pitch is a 22-yard strip on which the bowler bowls and the batters bat. The pitch is made of mud, soil, and rock, and pitch conditions play a massive part in making play difficult for either batter or bowler.

Powerplay:  A concept introduced in ODIs and T20 in 2005. While it has gone through multiple amendments, the current rule for ODIs states that 50 overs are divided into three blocks. The first block lasts for the first 10 overs of the innings, followed by the second which lasts from over 11 to 40, and then the final block of 10 overs. Fielding teams are allowed to keep only a certain number of fielders within the circle, according to which powerplay block is going on.

Run out: A mode of dismissal in which a batter is declared out if the fielder is able to hit the wickets before the batter is able to reach the crease.

Australia T20 World Cup Cricket

Run rate: Run rate or runs per over (RPO) is a simple mathematical calculation in which a team’s scoring rate is calculated by dividing the number of runs scored at any given time, after the number of overs they have played till then.

Stumps: The three wooden sticks at each end of the pitch that have two bails set on top of them. These are also collectively known as a wicket.

Test match: The premier, and the oldest format of cricket, in which two teams play for five days, with both teams getting an opportunity to bat for two innings each.

Twenty20 cricket: The newest and the shortest internationally endorsed cricket format in which one innings consists of 20 overs (120 deliveries).

Wicket: A set of three stumps and two bails, which are affixed at either end of the pitch on which the game is played. But it is also used in reference to a bowler getting a batter out.

Wicket-keeper: Often referred to simply as the "keeper," this fielding player stands behind the batter and is responsible for catching incoming balls. The wicket-keeper is the only fielder permitted to wear gloves and wicket-keeping leg pads.

Wide: If a bowler bowls a delivery which pitches far away from a batter, at the umpire’s discretion, it can be declared a wide and one extra run is awarded to the batting team, and the bowler will have to re-bowl the delivery. The concept of a wide is to ensure that bowlers do not bowl such deliveries which make it impossible for batters to reach out to.

A Very Quick Guide to Understanding Cricket

Don’t know a wicket from an over? Start here.

Victor Mather

By Victor Mather

I know baseball, but can you quickly explain cricket as played in the T20 World Cup?

It’s difficult, but I’ll try.

With the caveat that there are some oversimplifications, here is the gist:

The cricket field is a large circle, and the fielding team spreads out around it. Two batsmen at the center of the circle take turns trying to hit balls from the fielding team’s bowlers.

When a batsman does hit the ball, he and his fellow batsman may elect to run between two low posts, called wickets. Each time they do, they get a run. If a batsman hits the ball out of the circle on the bounce, it’s four runs. On the fly, it is six runs.

One stark difference from baseball is that the bowler takes a running start and, most of the time, bounces the ball to the batsman. Another is that the batsmen may hit the ball in any direction, even backward; there is no foul territory.

The batsmen can be put out in a number of ways, including having a ball they hit get caught on the fly, or having the ball from the bowler knock over one of the wickets.

In this format of the game, a batting team is finished when 10 of its 11 batsmen are out, or if it faces 120 balls, whichever comes first. By then, the team will most likely have scored at least 125 runs, and sometimes 200 or more.

Then after a break, the other team bats and tries to top the first team’s score.

You’ve convinced me that cricket is a fun sport. But can it be more than that?

Take it from the Trinidadian Marxist thinker C.L.R. James, who said in his 1963 cricket memoir “Beyond a Boundary”: “Cricket is first and foremost a dramatic spectacle. It belongs with theater, ballet, opera and the dance.”

Over the next month, if a match is close, a fast bowler is charging toward a star batter and the crowd is on its feet, for a lot of fans, the game will rise to art indeed.

On the Grasshopper and Cricket Poem – by John Keats (Text-Version)

The Poetry of earth is never dead: When all the birds are faint with the hot sun, And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead; That is the Grasshopper’s—he takes the lead In summer luxury,—he has never done With his delights; for when tired out with fun He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed. The poetry of earth is ceasing never: On a lone winter evening, when the frost Has wrought a silence, from the stove there shrills The Cricket’s song, in warmth increasing ever, And seems to one in drowsiness half lost, The Grasshopper’s among some grassy hills.

Opinion: Will America finally warm to the ‘most subtle and sophisticated’ sport?

E ditor’s Note: Ashish Ravinran  is a Singaporean-Indian writer and filmmaker based in New York City. His upcoming feature documentary,  “Chasing Cricket,”  follows the story of immigrant teens playing in an NYPD-run cricket league. He tweets at @AshishRavinran . The views expressed in this commentary are his own. Read more  CNN Opinion.

For one morning on June 9, 2024, the eyes of the cricketing world will fall on a public park on Long Island, New York. India and Pakistan will take on each other in the Men’s T20  World Cup . Don’t worry. Tickets are still available for a mere  $2,500 to $10,000  (other matches start at $200).

Just as cricket is the  second most-watched  sport in the world, India-Pakistan matches are some of the most-viewed sporting events globally. But there’s much more to cricket in America than the India-Pakistan rivalry.

The fact that the US is co-hosting the World Cup for the first time, with the Caribbean, should be seen as a coming-of-age for what has been a neglected sport here.

Now the cricket world wants to know: Is the sport settling in for a long stay at the crease, or is this just a flashy little cameo? In other words, can cricket ever take root in mainstream America?

Beyond the glamor of this international tournament and cricket officialdom, there is another America; one where cricket has been thriving organically for years, nurtured by South Asian and Caribbean immigrants.

When I moved to New York in 2012, I didn’t expect to find much cricket here. My own cricket career peaked when I represented Singapore at the Under-13 level and ended after a forgettable stint for my Oxford college.

But I soon realized that one of the unexpected pleasures of cricket in America was seeing the sport bloom between the cracks. I met groups of brown and Black immigrant teens who’d been separated from their greatest passion but found ingenious ways to play it: on pot-holed, trash-strewn fields, in public parks and empty parking lots.

I realized I had a lot in common with these teens. Growing up as a diasporic Indian kid in Chinese-majority Singapore, cricket gave me a sense of identity and connection to my Indian heritage. Cricket has fared better in Singapore than in the US, though it’s nowhere as popular there as say, soccer or rugby.

In Singapore, cricket training was where the brown kids often found each other, and where I found the vast cricket universe, complete with its own myths, heroes, laws and language. Silly mid-off? Fine leg?

Years later, I saw cricket providing a similar sense of identity for these teens in New York. It was a connection to their lives back home, and to the new ones they were forging in New York. “Cricket here is not just a sport. It’s a way for me to hold on to my culture while finding a community I can rely on,” Tanvir Ahmed, a young Bangladeshi cricketer based in Brooklyn, told me.

Through their eyes, the New York cricket world continued to bloom in front of me. I discovered weekend leagues, a high school league and peculiarly, the  NYPD Youth Cricket League  — the subject of my  upcoming feature documentary.

Past the US Open tennis courts and the Citi Field baseball stadium, in a small section of Corona Park, Queens, the NYPD has been organizing a youth summer cricket league since  2008 . Created to rebuild trust with the Muslim community after 9/11, the league became a surprise hit due to pent-up demand amongst immigrant teens, desperate to play their favorite sport in a country that cared little for it.

The American cricket community, who’ve been slogging uphill for years, are seeing progress in other parts of the country, too. Last year, Grand Prairie in Texas and Morrisville in North Carolina co-hosted the inaugural  Major League Cricket  season. This year there’s a second competition, the  National Cricket League , headquartered in Dallas, home to a  large South Asian community .

Elsewhere, university teams filled with international students have played in the  American College Cricket league  since 2008. And Fort Lauderhill in Florida, with its large Guyanese, Trinidadian and Jamaican expat population, has hosted three India-West Indies series  since 2016 .

Still, cricket remains an oddity to most Americans. Cricket lovers here are often forced onto the back foot when trying to explain it. We’re tempted to invoke the game’s longer history in the US, the well-known immigrant refrain of “we’ve been here longer than you think.”

Sports journalists have  joined  our voices this week, reminding readers that the  first international cricket match  took place in New York between the US and Canada in 1844. We fans lament that cricket was played widely until, during the Civil War, it was  defeated  by baseball, its own protégé.

We simplify the game’s intricacies, hoping to be accepted, to be understood. I admit I’ve told Americans some version of the following: Cricket is baseball’s more excitable, older cousin, in which the bowler hurls the ball against the ground on its way to the batter, who then scores runs by sprinting back and forth in straight lines, rather than around a diamond.

And then there’s  T20 cricket , the shortest version of the game designed for big hits and the format for the World Cup happening this June. “It doesn’t last 5 days! T20 takes 3 hours!” we diehards insist.

But if cricket is, in Indian historian and intellectual  Ramchandra Guha’s  words, the most “subtle and sophisticated game known to humankind,” what chance of mass appeal does it have in the land of slam dunks and the Super Bowl?

Quite a bit, the World Cup organizers hope. The US is “a massive market… and part of the objective is to grow the sport”, said tournament director Fawwaz Baksh. They’ve enlisted some big names to their cause.  Usain Bolt  is a tournament ambassador.  Sean Paul  sang the theme song.  Local news teams  have marveled at the temporary, purpose-built 34,000-person stadium in Eisenhower Park, Long Island — after  backlash  forced it to move from its originally proposed Bronx location.

In Manhattan,  live screenings  of World Cup matches are taking place next to One World Trade Center, where a fan zone has been built. Giant 400-pound, eight-foot tall replicas of the official T20 World Cup cricket ball have landed in  Times Square ,  Dallas  and the  Greater Fort Lauderdale area .

At the Bangladesh vs. India warm-up last Saturday, the first match played in the brand-new Long Island stadium, the crowd was unsurprisingly mostly South Asian. But I did see ‘cricketing America’ and ‘mainstream America’ co-exist briefly.

Two Bangladeshi brothers admitted to me there that they’d signed up for stadium security jobs so they could watch their country play on US soil for the first time —  for free ! On the other hand, a solitary Yankees fan at his first cricket match, was telling people he hoped the next game he attends would be more of a nail-biter.

Although cricket will officially be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, it’s no shock that winning over America at large will be tough. Meanwhile, the initial public ballot for the India-Pakistan match was “more than 200 times over-subscribed,”  according to organizers , and there were over 6 million ticket requests for the tournament.

It remains to be seen how many new converts will be found among the cricket faithful who are flocking to stadiums in Texas, Florida and New York this summer.

But after facing years of head-scratching and raised eyebrows in the US, this June the cricket diaspora strikes back.
