Production of Clay-Bricks As an Alternate to Modern-Bricks for Sustainable Development

The study examined the impact of production of clay-bricks as an alternate to modern-bricks for sustainable development. It found out the production process of clay bricks as an alternative to modern cement bricks, the financial difference between clay bricks and modern cement bricks as well as their affordability, the contribution of clay bricks production to the national development and to suggest ways of improving clay bricks production and it marketability. The study area includes four (4) wards (Asheikri, Hausari, Kolori and Balle/kelluri) of Geidam Local Government Area, Yobe State. The population include clay bricks producers and residential households in four (4) wards of the local Government. The Multistage sampling techniques is used in the study. A sample size of 40 people was selected for this study (10 from each ward). Questionnaires are used to collect primary data. The analysis is based on the retrieved questionnaires. Data collected were analyzed statistically, using descriptive Statistic. Chi-square was used to interpret the hypotheses. The research revealed that Production of clay bricks as an alternative to modern cement blocks. It also found out that the production of clay bricks has contributed immensely to the national development of the Country. The researcher recommended that Government should provide friendly business environment in terms of adequate infrastructural that would enhances the production of clay bricks for National Development and to give opportunities to clay-bricks producers to access soft loans as well as other technical assistance to broaden the opportunities to strive effectively.

Clay as one of the sustainable building materials suitable for the construction of all forms of building. However, the use of concrete cannot be overruled. Niger Delta region is endowed with clay as an essential building material. This study appraised several qualities of clay, its sustainable characteristics as well as its efficiency in construction. Furthermore, an appraisal of concrete block which have become the most sort for building materials; a review of basic definition and composition. Additionally, since concrete block is made up of mainly cement and sand, the study equally appraised the environmental impact of sand mining within the Niger Delta coasts and embedded energy associated with cement production and transportation. The negative effects of sand mining especially illegal mining within the region is a serious concern for all and sundry. The significant aspect of this report is to bring to the fore the negative consequences of continuous illegal sand mining as a call for reawaken the consciousness of the government of the day and the people on the alarming negative effect of sand mining and the gain associated with clay which is readily available around the region as an alternative to other non-sustainable materials of construction.

Many factors such as inadequate mortgage finance, defective land tenure system, and high cost of land are speculated to influence the housing deficit in Ghana. Evidence of clays used in building are common mostly in Great Britain, Italy, Japan and sparsely in developing countries and was used in building in ancient Ghana. Clay is considered as an eco- friendly building material available on earth. The abundance of intrusive rocks in Bongo District led to the exploration and evaluation of clay for bricks and tiles in Balungu and Apamtaga areas. Bricks have been touted as one of the most durable and sustainable building materials ever present according to research dating back its usage as far back as 10,000 BC. Despite its superior advantages over the conventional cement based products, patronage in Ghana remains at less than 2%. About 85% of brick construction in the country is of the single leaf (a standard 102.5mm thick wall normally referred to as half brick thick wall).This study assesses the performance of some of these brick houses constructed to promote the material and occupied over the past fifteen years within the Kumasi metropolis.it also assesses the satisfaction levels of residents living in these houses. The case study approach was primarily used together with the multi-stage sampling procedure which was employed to solicit and gather information from three resettlement towns through a semi-structured questionnaire. A five Likert scale was used in determining the satisfaction levels with 5 being highly satisfied and 1 being highly dissatisfied Analytical statistical tools in SPSS were used in extracting data and analysis through simple frequencies and bar graphs. The study revealed that most residents were satisfied with the brick dwellings though they had reservations in the monotony of the brick colour. Again the condition of the house was very good in terms of construction, thermal insulation, maintenance and appearance. The study also revealed that major transformation occurred within the interior either to break the brick color monotony or introduce bright color to enhance day lighting. The study thus recommends that in view of the potential benefits of its usage government should devote more resources to make it available to the public building more public buildings with this material. Again artisans should be trained in their execution through the National Artisan Training Centre at Building And Road Research Institute, Kumasi.

Abstract: This research aims to describe the characteristics of brick for small industrial production in South Sulawesi.Variables tested were visual test, size, water absorption and compressive strength. This research was conducted at the Laboratory Materials Department of Civil Engineering and Planning Education Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Samples taken at random as much as 150 bricks each industry group. Testing each variable of each 50 samples. Data analysis technique used is descriptive and statistical analysis. The visual test results showed that the most of the bricks do not meet the three requirements visually. High size bricks have irregularities of 6.88 mm and deviations thick of 29 mm while the size of the width of the bricks showed a deviation of 1.07 mm.
