“Name, Ph.D. in discipline name” gives you a good way of showing what you specialize in. Being specific about the discipline that you studied is a great way of showing people what you know about and what you can bring to the table.

If your Ph.D. doesn’t directly relate to the job you have, it might be worth being more specific about the discipline you’re qualified in. This can let people know that you have a Ph.D., but it doesn’t directly translate to your current job.

There’s nothing wrong with this. After all, plenty of people go to university and get a degree but never use it once they get out into the working world.

As long as you have a Ph.D., you can include it on your business card.

Some people might be a little bit off by it, but that’s not always a bad thing. The only issue is if people think you’re bragging by including that you have a Ph.D. You should be careful if this is the case.

This will allow most people to have more faith in you and your ability. Again, though, it can be a bit alienating to someone that doesn’t have a Ph.D.

You can also use the “Dr.” title instead of “Ph.D.” Many people prefer to include “Dr.” before their name to show that they have earned their doctorate (which is a Ph.D.) in a particular field.

Most people without a Ph.D. will disregard your business card if it’s written like this. Mentioning your university is another way of showing people that you might feel a bit more superior to them.

Even if you didn’t include the Ph.D. title and university name maliciously, it could still be perceived in this way. You’ll want to pay attention to these kinds of things before it comes to passing your business cards around.

The only reason you’d definitely want to include something like this on your business card is if it directly ties in with your job role. If you use your Ph.D. in some way for your job, it could be worth including it to show that you have spent a lot of time researching what you do.

  • Dr. Samantha Weiss, Brown University
  • Dr. Sarah Fredrikson, Harvard University

Yet again, since “Dr.” is used, you can remove the first name. This can work in some cases, but you have to know whether the personal tone of including your first name is more appropriate for your particular business card:

  • Dr. Westbridge, Oxford University
  • Dr. Grace, Colchester University
  • Dr. Smith, Cornell University

Name, University

You don’t need to include your formal title when you are writing your university. You can simply write your name if you do not believe that including your formal title helps your business card in any way.

Remember, a formal title can put a lot of people off. If someone doesn’t have a Ph.D. of their own, they might be intimidated or put off by somebody who does.

It can look like bragging, even if you don’t intend for it to be bragging. It might be wiser to avoid using it unless you know that it’s important to include it based on the business you’re trying to promote with your business card.

It might be wise to remove your university name and formal title. In place of anything else, you’ll be better off just using your job title with your name. No titles or university names need to be included. This is a fairly informal option that works well.

While it doesn’t outright say that you have a Ph.D. of any kind, it can still work well for Ph.D. owners. After all, you don’t always have to talk about your Ph.D., even if you have managed to earn one.

If your Ph.D. adds nothing of value or note to your job role, then there’s no reason to include it on your business card. Again, it’s a good way to alienate people who don’t have a Ph.D. of their own.

How to use the PhD title and all the little doctorate “rules”

There are many conventions in the academic world that can make it difficult to navigate the PhD title. The PhD title is awarded to those who have completed a doctoral degree but, not many people know how to use it once they have it.

This article will go through everything you need to know about using the PhD title and when you can start using it.

The “rules” are relatively simple and can be broken as they are not officially set in stone – other than when you can officially call yourself a doctor.

There is no one correct answer but it may be misleading if you use the PhD title incorrectly. Here are the recommendations for effective communication.

It very much depends on the setting. Here are some examples of how I would use my PhD titles awarded to me after my PhD degree.

How do you Write PhD correctly after a name? Is it ph d or phd?

It can be confusing to know exactly how to write PhD after your name. Which bits are capitalised? Is there a ‘.’ In the middle?

When writing a name with a PhD after it, the correct way to do so is to use “PhD” or “Ph.D. or Ph.D”

Depending on the preference of the individual, either form can be used.

However, if the individual has a business card that states their degree in full, then the more formal “Doctor of Philosophy” should be used.

It is important to note that using “PhD” without any periods is incorrect; this abbreviation should only be used in informal contexts such as emails or text messages. I tend to use PhD in my YouTube videos and some people have pointed out that this is incorrect…

Following the individual’s preferred format will ensure that their name and credentials are properly represented.

Should you use Dr as well as PhD?

Some people like to use Dr and PhD in their official titles. There are a couple of important points that you need to know about markers and academic titles.

  • A person can have more than one marker in their name. For example my full title is Dr Andrew Stapleton, PhD, MChem.
  • The doctor title at the front can be used as a variant to the PhD at the end.

It can be a little bit ambiguous if I was to use Dr Andrew Stapleton, PhD as there are two markers. This could mean that I have two PhD’s, it could mean that I have a PhD and a medical doctorate, or it could just be that I want to use both the doctor and the PhD tags for the one degree.

However, in my experience, I still like to use the doctor title at the front and the PhD tag at the end of my name for official purposes.

Academics would rarely use the PhD suffix in everyday communication. They would much rather just use the doctor title.

What is the proper title for a PhD?

The proper title for a PhD is Doctor of Philosophy. However, some teachers and professors like to be referred to without their official title.

If you are not sure about how your professor, lecturer, or friend with a PhD wishes to be officially addressed you can ask them.

Most of the time, I like to refer to my colleagues with their doctor title for official purposes, but I do not include the PhD at the end of their name. That is much better suited to a business card.

Your lecture may wish to be referred to as:

  • Dr [last name]
  • Dr [first name]

Asking them in the early stages of your relationship is the best way to work out which one they prefer.

If in doubt, always go for the more formal name and nomenclature.

When can you start to use your PhD title after your doctorate?

When you have earned your PhD, you can start using your title immediately. Although, it can be a little bit confusing as to when you have actually passed your PhD. Is it when you have submitted your dissertation? Is it when you have received the comments back?

The University of Adelaide says that you can use it from your conferral date:

Students can be conferred on one of five dates during the year and for PhD students the conferral date will be the first available following the completion of all the academic requirements of your degree, including final thesis lodgement and the disbursement of any outstanding financial obligations to the University.

I started using my PhD title as soon as my confirmation letter arrived at my house. It was the first letter from the University that referred to me as Dr Stapleton. It was incredibly excited.

Generally, it is acceptable to use the title “Dr.” both professionally and socially but socially, people very rarely use it – at least in Australia. But you should never use it if you are a PhD student, PhD candidate or enrolled in a PhD program without a previous PhD qualification. 

I do use it in professional settings but it always makes me feel a little bit awkward.

However, there may be some restrictions for certain settings. For example, if have a research degree resulting in a doctor title and you are working in a medical setting – some institutions do not like you to use Dr as it can confuse patients into thinking that you have a medical degree. 

Instead, they ask that you use the PhD tag at the end of your name rather than the doctoral title for official and professional communications.

What is the correct way to write PhD?

When writing about someone’s PhD, the correct way is to write the term in full and capitalize each letter.

This should be done for all academic degrees, not just PhDs.

For example, it would be “Doctor of Philosophy” or “PhD” instead of “Ph.D.”, “Dr.”, or “DPhil”.

Additionally, it is common to mention the field of study in which the degree was earned if known, such as “Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics”. It is also good practice to include the institution that granted the degree if it is a recognized one.

When writing about someone’s PhD, use proper capitalization and include relevant information like field of study and institution if known to ensure accuracy.

How do you put a PhD in a title?

Putting a PhD in a title is not as complicated as it may sound.

Generally speaking, the proper way to list a PhD in an academic or professional setting is by writing “Dr.” before the name, followed by the person’s full name and the appropriate abbreviations for their degree.

For example, if John Smith has earned a doctorate in psychology, his credentials would be listed as “Dr. John Smith, Ph.D.”

Students enrolled in degree programs at the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences can order business cards online in blocks of 250, 500, or 1,000. Cards will be available for pick up at the reception desk at the Harvard Griffin GSAS administrative offices on the third floor of the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center, 1350 Massachusetts Avenue, and you will be contacted when they are ready. You may also select to have your cards delivered to you directly for an additional fee. Production time is 7–14 business days from approval. 

 Please follow the instructions below when placing an order.

  • Go to hgsasstudent.fenwayprint.com .
  • You will be prompted to create an account in order to log in.
  • Once you are logged in, click on the Student Business Card button.
  • Select the quantity of cards you’d like to purchase—$52/250, $55/500, or $98/1,000.
  • Click “Customize Order.”
  • Fill in all necessary information. Required fields: Name, Degree Program, Phone Label 1, Phone 1, Email Optional fields: Phone Label 2, Phone 2, Addresses 1 and 2 Please note:   For the program field, please use the program in which you are studying and not the specific subject of study. This is a simple question, but after days of reviewing online, I am not sure about this. Is it okay to mention your degrees and certifications after your name in business cards. Some say that it depends on the audience. Some suggested to have 2 cards. One formal card (where you work) where you do not mention the credentials and one personal card which mentions all your credentials. But if you were to have one card, would you have the degrees and certifications mentioned in your business card? Please advise. Thanks.

In my field (IT/INFOSEC), it's pretty commonplace and accepted to add those in. I personally wouldn't display more than 2 or 3 designations, as after that point it strikes me as an exercise in e-peen measuring. For instance, I could technically list out "ChloroFiend, MS, CISSP, MCSE:Security, CCSE, Sec+" and a few others I've likely forgotten. Instead, I only use "ChloroFiend, CISSP" as its pretty much the capstone credential in my field. I'll add on the CISM as well too when I earn that designation but don't anticipate tacking anything else on. I terms of academic degrees, I do hold an MS but don't list that anywhere. I wouldn't do that with an MBA either. PhD only if its specifically relevant to the position.

Nothing is more ridiculous than watching folks put expected credentials on cards and in email signatures like Joe Black, Computer Support Tech: A+, Network+, MCP. Watching Project Managers put down MBA and PMP is always laughable. It tells me nothing more about your ability to do the job than adding on "Can pee standing up" in my experience. If you're not sure, think about this: If you worked free-lance, would you need malpractice or "errors and omissions" insurance? If you do, congratulations, you're held to a higher legal standard. With great power comes great responsibility (and the opportunity to put letters after your name on a little piece of a dead tree). e.g. - MD - Yes DDS/DMD - Yes CPR - No CPA - Yes CFP - No, AFAIK (Cert. Financial Planner) PE - Yes (Professional Engineer) CIH/DABT - Yes (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Diplomat of American Board of Toxicology) CSP - Probably not (Certified Safety Professional)

I do occasionally see Dr. when interacting with people in industry. It's kind of good because it tells me the person I'm talking too might not be a clueless moron who can't help with my questions.  

As a Senior Network Engineer, I was keen on putting my CCIE number on my cards and email signature. Now that I am in a management role, I leave that off. I also don't put my M.S. on there either. I guess I just let my work do the talking. I keep all my certs active and list the relevant ones on my resume, but I don't just vomit all of them on to the paper.

I guess I'm tacky, because I have PhD on my card. In an academic/research setting it does make a difference in how you get perceived. If I were out in industry, I wouldn't, but here at a gov't research institute I do. I don't go around shouting that I have the degree, but occasionally it's nice not to be thought of as some IT flunky, computer guy. I'm so low-key about it, that one of the secretaries said to me recently that she just found out I was a "doctor". We've been working in the same group for 8 or 9 years.

I met a guy once who listed his A+ certification on his business card. No joke.  

I think I have my name followed by CCNP and CCSP because those are the two highest and most recognized certs that I have. When I finish my CCIE, damn right I will be putting my CCIE # on my cards. I see nothing wrong with PMP or some other high level or capstone cert. As for degrees, I only think academic degrees are appropriate when they are graduate degrees. So you would not put Joe Schmo, B.S. but Joe Schmoe, P.H.D. or M.D. or J.D. is appropriate. Master's degrees are a bit iffy, especially an MBA.

FWIW I work with a number of PhDs in a commercial setting, and I think they've earned it. However I won't (seriously) call you Doctor unless you're an MD. Beyond the terminal PhD level degrees, in an appropriate professional setting I think I like the "legal standard" one is pretty good. EDIT: Agreed on the JD thing. It's reasonable to put on a business card, and you did complete post-graduate level course work. However you aren't a Doctor. JSD, sure, ok.

How to create a memorable student business card.

Who says you have to have to hold a position at a company to have a business card? Not me. In fact, I’ve had a business card ever since I was in college. Introducing…the student business card.

If you have any intention of networking (which you absolutely should), then you need to have a business card. I know, I know, some people say that business cards are obsolete these days since we all carry cell phones around 24/7. But that is exactly why you SHOULD have a business card. If done well, it will help you stand out amongst your peers who don’t have one. It’s like sending a handwritten thank you note versus a quick email. The time and thought you put into personally branding yourself will go a long way.

What to Include on Your Student Business Card

While in college, I wasn’t working with a company that created a card for me, and I was completing a new internship every summer. So what the heck did I actually put on my business card? Answer – The following:

  • First and Last Name
  • For me this looked like – Student at The Ohio State University, graduating Spring 2008
  • Major (and Minor)
  • For me this looked like – 4x Scholar Athlete: Captain, Ohio State Cheerleading
  • For you? Maybe you’re a Chair with your Fraternity or Sorority, in the Marching Band, on the Soccer Team, in the Architecture Club, etc.
  • Phone Number
  • If you have a personal email address, like gmail, I’d recommend putting that here instead of your school email — it sticks with you longer into the future.
  • Your custom URL – if you don’t know what this is, I teach you all about it in my free five-day course on LinkedIn. You can sign up for access to the course over on the home page .
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: I only recommend including Instagram, Twitter, or blogs on your business card if they are professional and help to tell your professional story. For example, maybe you’re a photographer and your Instagram account represents your beautiful photographs (not your college social life). Or maybe you are a writer and your blog is a great representation of your work.
  • If you add this, don’t go overboard. Stick to the one that best represents you and leave it at that.

Looks like a lot of info, huh? Well if you were at a company, it would include your title, maybe a license number, a couple different phone numbers (office and cell) and an office address. So we are on par with the amount of information included on a corporate business card.

How to Design Your Student Business Card

Now, when it comes to the design elements of the card, this is where you get to stand out. Remember, this is a tangible representation of your personal brand, so make it scream you!

  • If you have a personal logo that you use on a blog, it could be a great design element to use on your business card.
  • Monograms with your initials are simple, classic and another great option.
  • Photos that show personality and highlight your personal brand are a nice touch.
  • I personally used Ohio State’s colors and created a stripe design with them. Remember, you don’t have licensing rights to your school’s logo so don’t go slapping that on your card.

If you’re on a budget, you can always go the DIY route and make your own business cards. All you need is a computer and a printer and some of these two-sided printable cards . This was my go-to method in college. It saves time and money and you can always print new cards on demand.

Bottom line, let your personal brand shine through. It will make you memorable, and keep you top of mind with the people you connect with. I’m still having fun with this. Below is an example of some cards I made with Moo for a conference I went to this past September. I hadn’t launched The Intern Hustle yet, but I still needed a good business card to hand out. I wanted a conversation starter, and it worked like a charm!

Eligibility and policies.

  • You may ask for 50 cards (max) per request. A minimum of 10 cards is recommended.
  • Cards will be printed by the Advising Program Coordinator, and you will receive an email when they are ready for pickup. Turnaround is typically one (1) week, although this could be longer, especially at the beginning of the school year. If you need business cards by a certain date, indicate this on the form. These requests will usually be fulfilled by the indicated date, even within the typical one week timeframe.
  • The card address should be the location of your office. You may choose not to include a phone number if you prefer. There is also an option to provide a PGP key.

They are all fine. However, imhe, no academic puts "Ph.D" on their card. It's assumed that you have one, especially if "Professor" is anywhere on the card. A Ph.D. is sort of like having a ticket for the show. No one pins it to their chest. Same goes for research labs like JPL, NASA/Ames, etc... The only reason that you would put Ph.D. is if you work in the bureaucracy or in the corporate world, where not everyone has a Ph.D. The only letters I generally see on academic and researchers cards are things like fellowships in the Academy of Sciences or a similar honor.

I dunno, I have to disagree with that. I've been in academia (psych) for the better part of my life and whose with doc degrees have Psy.D. or Ph.D. on their card. It is assumed that if one is called a "psychologist" then they have a doctorate as MS level practitioners default to "therapist". Perhaps this is different in other fields such as research as the above poster mentioned IMHO if you get through a doctoral program you deserve to put it on there MrR

not all professors have a ph.d. it is a common complaint at many colleges that undergrad classes, especially lower division ones, are being taught by professors with only a master's degree.

1.  Keep the design simple and clear 

Simplicity is a strength when it comes to designing business cards. The fewer elements on a card, the easier for the reader to absorb relevant information. Resist the temptation to place many design elements on a card and overcrowd it with information. Instead, include only the essential details like personal name, company name, title, phone number, email address, and website. Avoid fancy fonts that are difficult to read. They look aesthetically pleasing but will likely confuse whoever you give your business card to. Besides, fancy fonts are not what people associate with a professional business: they make your company look childish.

3.  Incorporate your brand colors 

Every brand has unique colors that people associate with it. Incorporating brand colors in your company’s business card makes the card more memorable. Using your brand colors builds consistency and makes people remember your company whenever they see your card.

If your brand's colors are bold, you can use them as accents instead of the card background to keep the text readable. Use only a few colors to avoid confusing the card recipient. Any card not in line with your brand colors might confuse the person you give it to.

4.  Use high-quality paper 

The quality of your business card's paper says a lot about your brand. Low-quality cards (of light paper) are easy to spot and give the recipient a wrong impression about your brand. Like it or not, a low-quality card hints at a brand that should not be taken seriously. “If a business can’t invest in items that make it look professional, why should it be taken seriously?” is a typical thought process.

Should I design the business card myself or get a professional designer? 

If you have no graphic design experience, hiring a professional designer to help you create the perfect business card is advisable. You'll give the graphic designer your requirements, and they'll get to work creating the business card you want. You can find a local graphic designer or hire one online. Freelance platforms like Fiverr and Upwork make it easy to find professional designers, and you’ll only pay after getting satisfactory work.

If you have graphic design experience, you can take a shot at creating the business card yourself. The good news is that making a business card has become easier than ever, thanks to design platforms like Canva and numerous print-on-demand platforms. The name should be your business card's first and most prominent feature. It should have both your name and your company's name written clearly. Write your formal name, not nicknames, and your job title. Use legible and bold fonts so the card recipient can quickly notice the name. 

If your company has a physical address, don't hesitate to put it on your business card. You can even include a map at the back of the card to give it a personal touch. The address should be written clearly so that whoever you give your card to can easily locate it.

3. Phone number

4. Email address

You should include your company’s email address on the card so people can contact you. If you have multiple business emails, the one you use most should come before the others. The email address(es) should be very visible to the reader.

5. Web address

Virtually all businesses in this era have a website. Ensure you include your company’s website address on the business card so recipients can visit it to learn more about your company. After viewing a well-designed website stating your value proposition, they might be compelled to do business with you.

6. Social media icons and handles

It is becoming more common to include social media handles on corporate cards. If you run a business relying heavily on social media for customer interaction, it’s wise to include social media icons alongside your handle. This way, anyone you give the card to can visit your social media page and interact further with your brand.

Below is a good example of what we’re talking about. Observe the social media icons and handles clearly written on the card, with a call to action for the reader - Follow Us . This card template will help drive more social media engagement for a business.

The card should describe your business briefly and precisely. Anyone who reads the description should be able to understand what your business offers. Use yourself as the test case—can you discern the value proposition after reading the tagline? If the answer is no, you need a clearer description of your business. You can also include a small list of the services you offer.

A QR code is an interactive feature you can add to your business card. Anyone can scan the QR code and be directed to your website, landing page, or video that precisely explains your value proposition. This feature is becoming increasingly common and is one of the creative aspects of designing a business card we mentioned earlier. 

If your business has a unique logo, you can place it on the card to establish a brand identity and give clients a memorable image to relate to your company.

10. Call-to-action

Your business card can have a call to action to drive clients to take a specific action. It can be "schedule a meeting," "contact us," "visit our website," "email us," or anything else that drives someone to interact more with your business. A call to action helps clients remember your brand and take the required steps to interact with your business.

US Says Tariff Increases on Chinese EVs, Batteries and Chips to Start Aug. 1

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Some of the steep U.S. tariff increases on an array of Chinese imports, including electric vehicles and their batteries, computer chips and medical products, will take effect on Aug. 1, the U.S. Trade Representative's office said on Wednesday.

President Joe Biden will keep tariffs put in place by his Republican predecessor Donald Trump while ratcheting up others, including a quadrupling of import duties on Chinese EVs to over 100% and a doubling of semiconductor duties to 50%.

USTR said in a federal notice that a 30-day public comment period will close on June 28. The trade agency is seeking comments on the effects of the proposed tariff increases on the U.S. economy, including consumers, and on whether a proposed 25% duty on medical masks, gloves and a planned 50% tariff on syringes should be higher.

The United States in 2023 imported nearly $640 million of gloves, masks and syringes from China that will be affected by the new measures.

The notice also provides specific tariff codes for some 387 product categories affected along with new duty rates and implementation dates. Tariffs targeted to start in 2025 and 2026 will start on Jan. 1 for those years, USTR said.

The proposed Chinese tariff increases include "products targeted by China for dominance, or are products in sectors where the United States has recently made significant investments."

Washington is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in clean energy tax subsidies to develop U.S. EV, solar and other new industries, and has said China's state-driven excess production capacity in these sectors threatens the viability of U.S. companies. The tariffs are meant to protect American jobs from a feared flood of cheap Chinese imports.

The new measures affect $18 billion in current imported Chinese goods including steel and aluminum, semiconductors, electric vehicles, critical minerals, solar cells and cranes, the White House said. The EV figure may have more political than practical impact in the U.S., which imports few Chinese EVs because of prior vehicle tariffs.

BATTERIES LOOM LARGE

The largest two categories, making up $13.2 billion of the targeted imports from China in 2023, are lithium-ion batteries, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Duties of 25% are due to start in 2026 on the $10.9 billion non-vehicle lithium-ion battery category, which has grown quickly and is now the third-largest U.S. import category from China after smartphones and personal computers.

The U.S. imported $427 billion in goods from China in 2023 and exported $148 billion to the world's No. 2 economy, a trade gap that has persisted for decades and become an ever more sensitive subject in Washington.

The Retail Industry Leaders Association said it was evaluating the list of specific products subject to new tariffs and added that "retailers are growing increasingly anxious about the current product exclusions that are set to expire at the end of the month."

U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai has said the revised tariffs were justified because China was stealing U.S. intellectual property. Tai has also recommended tariff exclusions for hundreds of industrial machinery import categories from China, including solar product manufacturing equipment.

Tai said Wednesday the formal notice is an important step in making "substantial tariff increases on targeted, strategic products."

The Chinese Embassy in Washington said China's government will "take all measures necessary to defend our rights and interests." It said the tariff hike "will not only disrupt normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S., but also significantly drive up the cost of imported goods, inflict more loss on American companies and consumers, and make the U.S. consumers pay even more."

On Sunday, Beijing announced a new anti-dumping probe on certain industrial plastics from the U.S., Europe, Japan and Taiwan.

USTR said it would provide details on how companies could apply for machinery exclusions from the tariffs in a separate notice. But it said any exclusions granted would be backdated to start on Wednesday and end on May 31, 2025.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday she was pushing for G7 allies at a finance ministers meeting in Italy to jointly push back on China's industrial policies, although she said she was not asking them to mirror the new U.S. tariffs.

The G7 industrial democracies are the U.S., Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada.

It’s an exciting time when someone we care about graduates from college . So, whether you’ve been asked to a graduation party, invited to a more intimate graduation brunch, lunch or dinner with the family or, perhaps even less formally, sent a graduation announcement in the mail, you may like to show your support and celebrate their achievement with a monetary gift that lets them choose something they truly want or need.

Deciding to give cash, a check or a gift card might seem straightforward, but there are various nuances to consider, such as your relationship with the graduate, their field of study, as well as their future plans.

Acknowledging your relationship. The first thing to consider when deciding on a monetary gift for a college graduate is your relationship with them. Are you a close family member, sibling, cousin, aunt or uncle, best friend, sorority sister or fraternity brother or, maybe, even a supportive mentor? Your level of closeness can influence the amount you may want to give. It’s not all about the dollar value, but rather the thought and effort put into it.

Taking their field of study into account. Next, think about the field of study the graduate pursued. The amount you give could vary depending on whether they completed their undergraduate, graduate, medical or law degree. Keep in mind that some fields may require additional economic support as graduates transition into their professional lives. For example, medical or law school graduates often face substantial student loan debts. Contributing towards alleviating those financial strains can be a truly meaningful gift.

Considering their next steps. Where the graduate is headed after college can also help you land on an appropriate gift amount. Are they entering the workforce, pursuing further education, embarking on an internship, traveling or exploring new opportunities before jumping into their next chapter of life? Factoring in their future plans lets you match your gift with their immediate needs. An ample gift can provide a helpful boost, while a smaller gift can still convey your support and encouragement.

Here are some general tips for determining the perfect gift amount for the newly-minted grad.

Budget within your means. Give from the heart, but remember to choose an amount that is comfortable for you and aligns with your personal finances.

Be thoughtful. Consider including a handwritten note or card to express your pride and well wishes. A sweet inscription goes a long way in making your gift truly special.

Personalize the gift. If you’re close to the graduate, think about their interests, hobbies or long-term ambitions. Consider making your monetary contribution toward something purposeful like a travel fund, a professional development course, or even a new work wardrobe.

College graduation gift: If you’d like some numbers as a jumping-off point

Again, these amounts are not set in stone and should be adjusted based on your own personal circumstances and the significance of your relationship with the graduate.

Acquaintance or colleague: $50 to $75. This reflects a gesture of goodwill and congratulations without overextending. If you’ve built a closer connection with the graduate over time, you might lean towards the higher end of this range to acknowledge your evolving rapport.

Close friend or distant relative: $75 to $200. This amount correlates with your closer relationship and shows that you’re invested in their future endeavors. If the graduate holds a particularly special place in your heart, leaning towards the higher end of this range can help relay that sentiment.

Family member: $200 to $500. Close family members, such as parents, grandparents, godparents or close aunts and uncles might consider a more substantial gift to mark the occasion and show your ever-brimming pride in this young adult’s accomplishments.

It’s natural to wonder about gifting if there isn’t a formal graduation party or dedicated event to celebrate the grad on the calendar.
