Speech on Love

Love, a simple four-letter word, yet it holds a world of emotions within. It’s like a warm hug that soothes your heart and a force that moves mountains.

This feeling is not just about romance. It extends to friends, family, and even strangers. A kind smile, a helping hand, that’s love too.

1-minute Speech on Love

Ladies and gentlemen, today I stand before you to talk about a simple yet powerful word – Love. Love is not just a word, it is a feeling that can be as soft as a feather and as strong as a storm.

Love is like a beautiful song that touches your heart. When you love someone, you care for them more than yourself. You want to see them happy, even if it means giving up your own happiness. Love can make you do things you never thought you could. It gives you strength and courage. It’s like a light that brightens your path in the darkest times.

Love is also about understanding and respect. It’s about listening to each other, even when you disagree. Love is patient, it doesn’t rush. It waits, it understands, it forgives. It’s not just about saying “I love you”, it’s about showing it through your actions every day.

But remember, love is not just for others. It’s also about loving yourself. It’s about treating yourself with kindness and respect. You can’t truly love others until you learn to love yourself. It’s like a flower. You need to water it, give it sunlight, and protect it from harm, so it can bloom and spread its fragrance to the world.

So, let us all promise today to spread love everywhere we go. Let us not just say it, but show it in our actions. Let’s make the world a better place with love. Because love, my friends, is the most beautiful thing in the world.

2-minute Speech on Love

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let’s talk about love. Love, a simple four-letter word, holds a universe of feelings. It’s like the sun, shining bright, spreading warmth, and making life beautiful. Love is what makes us kind, patient, and understanding. It’s a powerful force that can create miracles.

Think about your family. The people who care for you, who look out for you. Your parents, brothers, sisters, they all love you. They would do anything for you. That’s the magic of love. It makes us brave. It gives us the strength to move mountains if we need to. Love in a family is like the roots of a tree, it keeps us grounded, it gives us our identity.

Now, imagine your friends. People you laugh with, people you share your secrets with. They might not be related to you, but they love you and you love them. Love among friends is like a cool breeze on a hot day. It brings relief, comfort, and joy. It makes life fun. It helps us grow.

Then, there is the love that makes your heart race, that makes you feel butterflies in your stomach. Yes, I am talking about romantic love. When you fall in love, you see the world through rose-colored glasses. Everything seems wonderful. This love is like a beautiful song that you want to keep listening to. It gives life a new meaning.

But love is not always easy. Sometimes it can be tough. Sometimes it can hurt. But even when it hurts, it teaches us. It makes us grow. It makes us better. Like a rainstorm that may be scary but leaves the earth fresh and green, love can bring tears but also joy and growth.

Lastly, let’s not forget about self-love. The love you have for yourself. This love is like a mirror. It shows you who you really are. It helps you understand yourself. It makes you strong. It helps you to love others better.

So, let’s celebrate love. Let’s cherish it. Let’s spread it. Because love can change the world. It can bring peace. It can bring happiness.

In the end, love is all we need. It’s the most beautiful thing in the world. Love is not just a feeling, it’s a way of life. Let’s make love our way of life.

Southern Love Poems For Him

  • "Love arrives / and in its train come ecstasies / old memories of pleasure / ancient histories of pain. / Yet if we are bold, / love strikes away the chains of fear / from our souls. / We are weaned from our timidity / In the flush of love's light / we dare be brave / And suddenly we see / that love costs all we are / and will ever be. / Yet it is only love / which sets us free." — "Touched by an Angel," Maya Angelou
  • "My monkey-wrench man is my sweet patootie; / the lover of my life, my youth and age. / My heart belongs to him and to him only; / the children of my flesh are his and bear his rage / Now grown to years advancing through the dozens / the honeyed kiss, the lips of wine and fire / fade blissfully into the distant years of yonder / but all my days of Happiness and wonder / are cradled in his arms and eyes entire. / They carry us under the waters of the world / out past the starposts of a distant planet / And creeping through the seaweed of the ocean / they tangle us with ropes and yarn of memories / where we have been together, you and I." — "Love Song for Alex, 1979," Margaret Walker
  • "I had not thought of violets late, / The wild, shy kind that spring beneath your feet / In wistful April days, when lovers mate / And wander through the fields in raptures sweet. / The thought of violets meant florists' shops, / And bows and pins, and perfumed papers fine; / And garish lights, and mincing little fops / And cabarets and soaps, and deadening wines. / So far from sweet real things my thoughts had strayed, / I had forgot wide fields; and clear brown streams; / The perfect loveliness that God has made,— / Wild violets shy and Heaven-mounting dreams. / And now—unwittingly, you've made me dream / Of violets, and my soul's forgotten gleam." — "Sonnet," Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson

Southern Love Poems For Her

  • "But we loved with a love that was more than love— / I and my Annabel Lee— / With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven / Coveted her and me." — "Annabel Lee," Edgar Allan Poe
  • "I lov'd thee from the earliest dawn, / When first I saw thy beauty's ray,/ And will, until life's eve comes on, / And beauty's blossom fades away; / And when all things go well with thee, / With smiles and tears remember me. / I'll love thee when thy morn is past, / And wheedling gallantry is o'er, / When youth is lost in age's blast, / And beauty can ascend no more. / And when life's journey ends with thee, / O, then look back and think of me." — "Early Affection," George Moses Horton
  • "There's no doubt in my mind / a Southern girl was born / for a man to hold, / to sway as one / to the sound of country music, / in his arms he embraces pure gold. / A man is born to love a Southern girl / blond hair, black hair, brown hair, / straight or curled, / a man is born to love a Southern girl." — "Born to Love a Southern Girl," Steven S. Walsky

Short Sweet Love Poems

A love poem will not always be long and flowery. Sometimes what you need to say can be very short. In fact it may be the fact that the poem is short that makes it special. Its short length may show that you put the time and effort in to make every word count. You considered carefully every word choice. Every word choice has a reason behind it. A short poem can be the ultimate act of romance when it is given the time and effort that it deserves.

The best way to tell your soon-to-be spouse how you feel is through a marriage proposal speech..

proposal speech love quote over image of couple's feet

When it comes to love, when you know, you know — that's what they tell you, anyway.

And, while that may very well be true, more often than not, you may not know exactly how to tell someone you love them and want to spend the rest of your life with them.

Whether it's your initial marriage proposal speech or you're working on writing your wedding vows , you want the perfect romantic love quotes.

Expressing how you feel can be so tough, especially when the stakes are so high. You're in love, and this is the story they'll be telling for years!

The best way to start off a marriage proposal speech is simple: pour your heart out.

Figuring out a proposal idea is hard enough without planning out your whole proposal speech. There's so much you might include like the little bits and pieces of your love story, all the things you love about your significant other, and your dreams of a shared future.

There is no such thing as a perfect proposal — each marriage proposal speech is special in its own way. However, these five marriage proposal ideas can make expressing your feelings be even more convincing:

1. You should mention your "How I Knew You Were The One" big moment.

2. Communicate what you love about the person you're proposing to.

3. Talk about how much you've changed for the better.

4. Express gratitude.

5. That you're committed for life.

Here are 50 romantic quotes to inspire you when crafting your marriage proposal speech.

Speech on Love in English: Sample 1

‘Ladies and gentlemen, respected faculty and dear friends, today I am here to present to present with you my perspective on the speech on love.

Love comes to us in many ways. The most fundamental form of love is the love for our family and friends. The love of our mother holds us close from the moment we are born. She feeds us with unconditional love. As we grow, our deep bonds with siblings, grandparents, relatives, and friends grow stronger with each passing year. We share laughs, tears, hopes, and dreams with them. Our togetherness supports each other in the ups and downs of life.

Let me help to understand love with an example. Last year when my sister Shalini had a severe accident, our entire family came together to take care of her. We take care of her treatments, meals, and finances. Furthermore, we keep her spirits high by playing music of her choice and spending quality time together. With the power of love and care, she recovered fast. This experience taught me the importance of family bonds and care which is unbreakable and is difficult in the most difficult times of our life.

Do we share the same bonds with our friends too? Yes, the same love is true for our close friends. Friends are the next family to us. They are yet another member of our family which we choose for ourselves. They know us deeply and accept us for what we are. My best friend

Aswani is my childhood friend and has been by my side since middle school. We went through many struggles together but still, we share an unbreakable bond. He brings ice cream and movie tickets to comedy movies whenever I am upset, just to cheer me up. That is the power of true love for friends and friendship.

Love gives us strength, comfort, and courage to face any circumstance of life. The love of family and friends is precious. It is important to express our love and appreciation to our dear ones every day. Thank you.’

Speech on Love in English: Sample 2

‘To the honorable guest, teachers, and my dear classmates: Today I am honoured to keep my point of view through my speech on love.

As soon as we listen to the word love, a picture of our loved and dear ones fills our hearts. It’s very natural to love our parents, siblings and friends. But love is not limited to human beings only. We love our home, our community, our natural environment, and our country.

Our country provides us with identity, security, and freedom to pursue our dreams. We can in return pay our patriotism and civic responsibilities as gifts to the nation.

For example, we should follow our fundamental duties, vote in elections, keep peace in the country, and take part in social events for the betterment of the society as well as for the country. My parents who are immigrants cast their vote than anything. They never miss any election either local or national. Their dedication is something that motivates me to exercise my love for the betterment of the nation in the form of civil duty.

Another way to serve our country love is through community service. Last year, I volunteered at the Save Earth From Plastic program. The team of volunteers removed many plastics from our local rivers. Through this small action, I connected with the love for the beauty of nature as well as the country. With this small service, I felt proud that I protected my nation from being polluted.

Furthermore, our love for the country also includes humanity and treating all citizens with humanity and dignity. No matter what the circumstances are, we should not forget the love of equality among us. Participating in protests against injustice serves the purpose of the warmth of different and similar views on the subject.

Our country is a secular and sovereign state. Loving the differences as well as the similarities helps us to give courage, compassion, and love to all who care about our homeland. Let us love our country more for generations to come.

Thank you.’

Famous Speeches Sure to Inspire Your Next Declaration of Love

By Marisa Polansky and Kristine Keller

Whether it’s your new boo, your old BFF, or your tattooed barista, someone in your life is worthy of a little love. But articulating the abstract, undefinable feeling of l-o-v-e can be a pain in the . . . you know what.

We’ve worked on many beautiful speeches, but the most memorable professions of love? They don’t hold anything back. They’re honest and enthusiastic and unforgivingly passionate. So to help you express yourself like a pro, we’ve compiled a list of top speeches sure to inspire declarations of love to just about anyone in your life.

For your significant other who supports you from afar—and with whom you wish you had more red carpet photos: Ryan Gosling wins a Golden Globe in 2017 and takes the opportunity to thank his behind-the-scenes support system, Eva Mendes. And while the rest of us might have fawned more than Mendes, it had to have made her knees at least a little weak. Gosling reminds us that when it comes to a happily ever after, it takes two. How Much Affection Between Friends Is “Normal”?

By Claire Cohen

For your never-could-there-ever-be-a-smarter-cooler-stronger soulmate: The mic drop heard ’round the world. Though you’ll likely not be speaking to your sweetheart as the president of the United States, take a cue from number 44, who keeps it real in the most unreal of circumstances. In his last speech as POTUS, Obama applauds Michelle’s ability to take on the First Lady role “with grace, and with grit, and with style.” And if you’re lucky enough to find yourself a Michelle, you’ll need to deliver many speeches like this. She deserves it.

For that person who seeks light in the darkness: At a time when the world is at risk of forgetting the importance of love, Lin-Manuel Miranda has the perfect message to remind us that, “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside.” His words at the 2016 Tony’s spotlight the idea that love and kindness really can conquer all. (Minutes 1:50–2:46)

For your best and oldest friend who inspires you—and looks real good in a tuxedo: Before Barack and Joe, there was Matt and Ben, whose friendship inspired bromances, matching necklaces, and a Mindy Kaling off-Broadway play. From Beantown to Tinseltown, the pair shows us how best to conquer the world with your best friend forever. Their 1997 Academy Awards speech reminds us that before Gigli and Bourne , they were just two dudes from Boston with a lot of enthusiasm for some guy named Chris Moore. (Minutes 0:45–1:52)

For all the old friends who made you a survivor: Let’s face it: Not everyone is meant to be in your life for always. But even those once-upon-a-time friends were there at a time when you needed them. Or, if you’re Beyoncé, they, ya know, helped make you Beyoncé. In the classiest speech to ever grace the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, Queen Bey thanks all the founding members of Destiny’s Child, saying their name (saying their name) before she—bonus—calls out Jay Z in the cutest shout-out ever. (Minutes 9:00–10:53)

For the people who maybe you don’t always get along with but, hey, there’s love for them too: At the Screen Actors Guild Awards last month, Mahershala Ali proves there’s enough love to go around and that, sometimes, differences can be beautiful. Just as you’ll always have people in your life who disagree with you, you’ll always have a choice on how to react to them. So why not choose love? (From 1:00–2:00, or the whole speech)

For a parent who inspired you and put up with all your ridiculous hairdos: At the 2014 Academy Awards, Jared Leto tells the unlikely story of a young high school dropout who, against all odds, creates a happy life for her family. Spoiler alert: That girl is his mother and her child now has an Oscar. Let this speech be your inspiration when thanking Mom and Dad, whose early struggles paved the way for your achievements. (Minutes 1:36–2:24)

For all the people who make you feel seen and appreciated and validated: It’s hard to believe that a goddess like Sally Field could ever feel unlikable—and yet, her Academy Awards speech from 1985 tells otherwise. Though it’s famously misquoted as “You like me! You really like me!” the sentiment holds true. Sometimes external validation ain’t such a bad thing. This Valentine’s Day, maybe it’s your turn to do a little validating. (From 3:20–3:50)

For the coworker you’ve thanked too silently in the past: Sometimes people need to hear your appreciation a little bit louder now. Here, Cuba Gooding Jr. accepts his 1997 Oscar by literally shouting praise to those who helped him along the way. Let this speech inspire your own standing ovation for all the coworkers who’ve helped you organize Outlook. (1:10–1:57)

For your insanely precocious daughter who inspires your funniest one-liners: They may pick their noses in your presence. They may make you park seven blocks away when you pick them up from school. But your kids also challenge you to look at life through a different lens, making you a little wiser and, most likely, a lot funnier. At the 2009 SAG Awards, Tina Fey shows us the right way to say thank you for using all my makeup. (2:28–3:24)

Greetings to all and thank you to all of you to give me a chance to speak on love.

I want to talk about something really awesome today – love, especially the love we share with our parents.

Your mom and dad take care of you, they help you when you’re sad or sick, and they happy for you when you do cool things. Oh My friends! I want to tell you that it is an actual face of true love.

When you mess up or make mistakes, they still love you.

Love is a strong feeling that has the ability to unite people and give them a sense of true life. It may come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from romantic love between partners to love between family and friends.

Love is an activity as well as a sensation. It entails providing someone with support and caring while also making sacrifices to ensure their happiness. It involves prioritising the needs of others and supporting them in both good and terrible circumstances.

Although it is not always simple, true love is worthwhile. It necessitates forbearance, tolerance, and patience. It is about developing mutually and assisting one another’s personal and marital progress.

Love involves more than simply enjoying the good times; it also involves overcoming obstacles as a couple. It is about supporting one another even when times are difficult. Marriage and Love

Cornerstone Collections:

Cornerstone Collections

“The Family: A Proclamation to the World” from The Church of Jesus Christ beautifully teaches about marriage and love. It states that “marriage between man and woman is essential to [God’s] eternal plan.” This teaching about marriage is core to the doctrine of the Church. It even traces back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, where God commanded them to remain together.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ believe that families can be together forever, not just on earth. Being together forever is possible when a husband and wife are married and sealed together for time and eternity. Sealing happens in sacred temples and puts an end to “till death do us part.” Marriage and love are some of the most significant sources of joy and happiness in this life, and working through trials can significantly help couples grow in charity and love. Church president Russell M. Nelson has said, “There is great power in a strong partnership. True partners can achieve more than the sum of each acting alone” (“Disciples of Jesus Christ—Defenders of Marriage,” August 14, 2014).

When dating, remember that a healthy relationship is an equal partnership between two people willing to sacrifice for each other. Real love is more than mutual attraction; love that forms a lasting relationship needs a well-established foundation. We can build a good foundation through respect, forgiveness, and hard work. Remember President Boyd K. Packer’s advice in your search for marriage and love: avoid temptation and feelings of pride. Instead, “seek the pure, eternal love that God has in store for [us]” (“Eternal Love,” November 3, 1963).

How Can I Love Someone Unconditionally?

A single red rose placed upon scattered book pages.

Sometimes patience with a significant other can run thin. Whether you’ve gotten into an argument or you just don’t see why your partner can’t put their dishes in the sink, you may find yourself asking, “How am I supposed to love this person unconditionally ?” To answer this, we need not look further than the perfect example of unconditional love: Heavenly Father. Despite all our weaknesses and shortcomings, God loves us no matter what. When we love others unconditionally, we do just that—we love them  no matter what .  While this doesn’t mean you should let your partner’s erroneous actions go unchecked, it does mean  that  you should recognize the eternal potential in your partner. Try to see them as God sees them—as a being capable of repentance and growth. In doing so, you will find that your love for them and patience with them will increase.

How Can I Tell if I Should Marry the Person I’m Dating?

A bride and groom embracing on their wedding day, excited their new life together.

Deciding to marry is one of the biggest commitments you will ever make, so how can you know if the person you are dating is the “right” one for you?  As  Bruce A. Chadwick explained ,  “To most of us Heavenly Father says, ‘There are  thousands  .  . .  who are worthy to enter my house and covenant to be your eternal mate. You pick one you like who is worthy, and I will give you my blessing’ ” (“ Hanging Out, Hooking Up, and Celestial Marriage ,” May  7 , 2002).

I f  you both   are  committed to each other and to living according to the gospel of Jesus Christ ,   t hen go to the Lord in prayer. Ask Him to help you understand His will. He will send the Holy Ghost to help you feel peace and assurance about whether the person you are dating will be a good marriage partner for you, and you for them.

How Do I Love My Spouse When Our Marriage Is on the Rocks?

Silhouette of a man and woman under a starry sky, standing apart from each other.

All couples face challenges in love and marriage. Contention  can spout from innocent differences in opinion or from situations of greater weight, such as financial problems. Whatever the cause, husbands and wives can work together to overcome any challenge when they remember that their marriage is a sacred covenant and responsibility.

Ultimately you have the power to choose how you will react when things aren’t going well in your marriage. Will you respond to your spouse with anger, frustration, and bitterness? Or will you react with patience, love, and humility? As President Boyd   K. Packer said, “An eternal marriage is worth every effort it requires” (“ Eternal Marriage , ”  April  14,  1970  ).  So  don’t give up. As you pray for guidance, the Lord will bless you with an increase of love for your spouse and the strength to overcome your trials.

What Are Some Characteristics of a Healthy Relationship?

Photo of a park and a park bench at night with romantic bistro lights strung up.

While a quick scroll through Instagram might convince you otherwise, there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. There are, however, a few characteristics that are common in healthy relationships. Some of those characteristics are trust, good communication, compromise, and honesty. Above all else, a relationship is healthiest when partners keep their covenants with each other and God. There is no better way for two people to draw closer together in love and unity than for both to keep the commandments, serve others, and strengthen their individual testimonies of the gospel of Jesus Christ. If you find that your relationship is unsteady or failing, remember this quote from Elder Holland: “You want capability, safety, and security in dating and romance, in married life and eternity? Be a true disciple of Jesus” (“ How Do I Love Thee? ” February 15, 2000).

80 love messages for him that come straight from the heart

Whether you're far apart or right next to each other, a romantic gesture will always warm your partner's heart.

Writing love notes to your partner is a great way to keep romance alive, Adita Kashyap Mishra, relationship expert at Mood Fresher , tells TODAY.com.

“When you take the time to write a love note to your partner, you are sending a message that you care about them and that you value your relationship,” he says.

“Sharing a love note is a gesture of intimate connection that has never gone out of style. We have seen it in the poetry of millennia, in letters written from the battlefields of war to valentine notes in elementary school,” echoes Jacqueline Connors, LMFT, who elaborates. “The reason is that love notes can convey depths of vulnerability that shows ‘I feel safe with you’ and can increase the bonds of emotionally intimate connections.”

When it comes to matters of the heart, we often tend to take our loved ones for granted. That's why Kashyap Mishra says any (and all) relationships benefit from a love note from time to time.

“We assume that they will always be there for us, no matter what. But the truth is, even the most rock-solid relationships can benefit from a little love note now and then.”

They also help keep the spark alive in your long-term relationship . “In the early stages of a relationship, everything is new and exciting. But as time goes on, it’s easy to let the romance fizzle out,” Kashyap Mishra says. “By writing a love note to your partner , you’re reminding them of the reasons why you fell in love with them in the first place.”

Kashyap Mishra shares three tips for writing love messages for the guy in your life.

How to write a love message

Keep it personal..

A little custom-tailoring goes a long way. “Your love note should be all about your partner. Avoid generic phrases or compliments that could be applied to anyone,” Kashyap Mishra says. “Think about what makes your partner special and unique, and use that as inspiration for your words.”

Make it specific.

Rather than simply saying “I love you,” Kashyap Mishra says to try to be more specific about what you love about your partner. “Do you appreciate their sense of humor, their kindness and their strength? Whatever it is, let them know in your note.”

  Be creative.

“There’s no need to stick to traditional love note clichés. Get creative with your words and expressions of love,” Kashyap Mishra says. “Write a poem, compose a song or draw a picture. Whatever you do, make sure it comes from the heart.”

With the help of several experts, we compiled a list of the best love messages for him. These sweet words are sure to warm his heart.

Short love messages for him

  • I lose my train of thought every time you smile at me.  For the guy whose smile makes you weak at the knees, this flirty message will show him how you feel.
  • You are the embodiment of everything I’ve ever dreamed of in a partner. This message is a great way to tell your guy that he’s the right one for you. You can add more specific details about the qualities you appreciate.
  • Good morning, love! I hope you have a great and exciting day filled with good moments. Try sending this text to start his day on a good note. “Data from eharmony’s Get Who Gets You campaign shows simple messages like ‘hi’ can appear lazy and may annoy daters,” Minaa B , social worker and author, tells TODAY.com. “Sending something more intentional and meaningful can make someone feel special.”
  • How dare you enter my life and just bring immense joy into it, sir? Liam Barnett, a dating expert and relationship coach who is behind DatingZest says this lighthearted message tells your partner the impact that they’ve had in your life without being too intense.

Love notes for him

  • Thank you for being there for me when I needed you most. Connors notes that while this message may seem straightforward, it demonstrates “purpose and often a partner wants to feel purposeful and needed.”
  • I just caught myself smiling about [insert a recent experience or memory]. Thank you for making my day even better. Laurel House, one of eharmony’s relationship experts, says you are validating him by letting him know that he does a good job at making you happy and thinking about him even when you are not with him. “Men want to make you happy. They do. They want to feel appreciated. They want to know that you think about them. And now you have made him think about you too, but not in a needy way,” she says.
  • You get me excited about what’s possible. “This is a great message because it shows how alive and full of energy the efforts (or attributes) of the partner is instilling in the other,” Connors says.
  • Your love keeps me grounded. Whenever life is stressful, he's your rock. Let him know how much you appreciate his strength and support.

Love notes for him

  • I’m so grateful to have you in my life. Kashyap Mishra says to opt for the above message instead of something like “I love you more than anything in the world.” This may be true, he says, but it’s best to avoid saying it in a love note. “It may come across as needy or desperate.”
  • I’m so lucky to be with you. Kashyap Mishra advises an option like this one over “I can’t live without you" since that phrase “may make your partner feel like they have to live up to your expectations.”
  • I think of you the moment I wake up and the moment I fall asleep. Aw, how sweet is this classic message?
  • I love you just the way you are. Kashyap Mishra suggests steering clear of messages that say they're perfect since it can set people up for disappointment. Opt for this sweet expression of love (and lyric from the famed Billy Joel song) instead.

Love notes for him

  • Every day I choose you. With the right person, it's an easy choice.
  • I just wanted to let you know that you make me feel so happy, so loved, and so protected. Thank you for being my person.  This message covers a lot of ground while still being succinct. “Again, you are validating him and letting him know that he is appreciated and doing a good job,” House says. “And you are doing so without needing or expecting anything back. It is an unsolicited compliment and that makes him feel good."
  • You give me a love I didn’t know was possible. Love can open up a world of opportunities for joy.
  • I love you, your beautiful mind and your immensely kind heart. Barnett says this short love message captures your adoration along with what you appreciate in him as a person. It can’t hurt to let him know you like his appearance, either.

Love notes for him

  • My love for you has no bounds, and it grows every day. This simple message will show him the strength of your connection.
  • You’re all I could ask for, more than I could ask for. I love you so much. Another recommendation from Barnett, this one should be reserved for when it truly counts “since it’s a bit deeper and you have to mean every word of it.”
  • You’re my joy, my sun, my everything. “It’s a short, yet meaningful way of telling him how important his presence in your life is,” Barnett says.
  • I am so excited to spend the rest of our lives making memories together. With the right person, every day is an adventure. Whether you're traveling, learning new skills, or just spending quality time together at home, your beloved is always by your side.

Deep love messages for him

  • I feel so lucky to be with you and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us together. I love you more than anything in this world and I’ll never stop loving you. Kashyap Mishra recommends this personal love message for him as a way to zoom in on some of your loved one’s strengths.
  • I found my sanctuary in your arms. This simple message conveys how much you cherish your partner's love and support.
  • I am so happy to be your partner. You inspire and motivate me, and also make me feel seen, loved and heard. I am truly lucky to have you in my life and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us. Thank you for being a wonderful partner to me. Minaa B. says this message is a reminder that aside from love, it matters how your partner treats you and makes you feel. “Remind them by verbally expressing why you love them,” she adds.
  • Every time I close my eyes, you're all I see. You are my dream man in every sense of the word. Instead of counting sheep, your beloved has you counting hearts as you drift off to sleep. Remind him how much you love his uniquely wonderful qualities.

Love notes for him

  • I hope that I can bring as much comfort and peace to you as you do to me. He'll be happy to know that his presence is so comforting to you, and touched to know that you'll always be there for him.
  • I am in awe of your kindness, gentle strength, and caring heart. To paraphrase a famous Bible verse, love is gentle, and love is kind. Tell him how much you treasure his calm and compassionate nature.
  • Your touch is an electric current that makes me feel so alive. This buzzy message will invigorate him for the next time you see each other.
  • I can’t wait for you to come home tonight and show you how much I love you. I wish I could give you the world for how good you are to me, but I can give you the love that I have. “This message promotes both physical and emotional intimacy,” says Minaa B., noting you can add some flare to the message to spice up your sex life.

Love notes for him

  • The way you look at me makes my heart skip a beat. He'll be thrilled to know the effect he has on you.
  • Thank you for your strength when I am weak. Thank you for your openness when you need me. Thank you for your protection that makes me feel safe by your side. Thank you for your strong arms that hold me tight. Thank you for being all of you and for loving me for all of me. You’re appreciated. And you are so loved. “According to a new study from eharmony, over half (55 percent) of those who have been in a relationship feel most loved when their partner makes them feel emotionally seen. An unsolicited thank-you note will make him feel emotionally seen, loved, and considered,” House says. “Even better if it’s a handwritten note that he finds in his car, his briefcase, his pocket, tucked into his laptop or next to his toothbrush. When he feels love, he will make you feel loved too.”
  • It means so much to me how easy it is to talk to you and how you make me feel heard. You are so supportive and caring and it makes me so happy to have you in my life. “Finding meaningful connections can be difficult,” Minaa B says. “When you find someone you can be your full self with, it’s important to send messages like this to let your partner know how much you really value your connection.”
  • Even during the hard times, there’s nobody I’d rather have by my side. Every person — and every couple — goes through ups and downs. No matter what happens, though, the right person will be right there with you.

Love notes for him

  • I want you. I want your mind, your heart, your head, and of course your body. I want all of you. As you have all of me. Because I am all yours. And you are all mine. And I love how it feels to know that. Looking for a deep love message that’s on the sultry side? “A man wants to feel desired, just like us. He also wants to know that you are his. This is a sexy message without being overtly sexual,” House says.
  • I appreciate that our relationship is a safe place that shelters us from the chaos of the world.  In stormy seas, he's your anchor. Your love helps both of you tune out the noise and focus on what really matters.
  • You know what? You make me really happy. Even when I’m not with you, I’m happy thinking about you, who you are, how you make me feel, and how grateful I am that you are in my life. House says that when you share your feelings you make your relationship more meaningful.
  • I’m so lucky to have found my best friend and my soulmate in the same person. To quote "Parks and Recreation" icon Leslie Knope, "I love you and I like you." Love and friendship are two of the most important elements of a good relationship.

Love notes for him

  • With you by my side, life is an exhilarating adventure. Even the little things can be so much fun when you’re experiencing them with your beloved.
  • In your eyes, I see a universe of possibilities. This message may be a little sappy, but love brings out the sentimental side of even the most stoic person. He'll appreciate that you feel comfortable expressing your feelings for him, no matter how silly it may seem.
  • Your smile is the sunshine that brightens my darkest days. Send this sweet and simple message to the light of your life.
  • From the moment I met you, you felt like home. When you find "the one," everything makes sense. Tell him how much you cherish your closeness and comfort with each other.

Love notes for him

Love messages if you’re in a long-distance relationship

  • You’ve been on my mind all day and I would love to FaceTime to see your face. I miss you so much and can’t wait to hear your voice. “Instead of waiting for your partner to initiate a call or the next visit, take the initiative and show them how much they mean to you,” Minaa B says.
  • Distance could never erase a love this strong . This message is both romantic and reassuring for your faraway boo.
  • It’s been so long since I saw your handsome face. Would love to get a new picture to stare at and show my friends how cute you are. “When dating long-distance, you can still enhance your chemistry,” says Minaa B., adding that a quick picture or a video call can increase intimacy.
  • Each sunrise makes me grateful we get to experience this world together. No matter how far away you are, you can take joy in knowing that you both look at the same sky.

Love notes for him

  • I love how patient you are with me and knowing that despite the distance, you still make time to tend to me, check in on me and do sweet things that make me feel loved. I appreciate you. “This message is a great reminder to your partner that their personality shines through and you feel deeply connected despite the distance," Minaa B says.
  • Even though being apart is hard, there’s nothing we can’t face together.  You and your partner are a team no matter what.
  • If I had a penny for every time I thought about you, I’d buy a ticket for the next flight to see you. This funny, heartfelt message will definitely make him smile.
  • I can’t wait to hold you again. Sometimes, all you want is a tight hug from the one you love. You'll both look forward to being in each others' arms again.

Love notes for him

  • As long as we share the same sky and breathe the same air, we will always be together. Remind him that your love for him is the size of a planet.
  • The light you brought into my life is indescribable. Now I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone before. “It’s a love message that goes beyond the miles and beyond the distance that separates the couple,” says Barnett, adding that this love message is both highly meaningful and sensitive.
  • I feel your love wherever I go and whatever I do. You’ll never be far apart when you carry his love in your heart.
  • You’re so easy to be with, but so hard to be without.  Being apart is difficult, but you can make it through the tough times together.

Love notes for him

  • Every time I hear my phone ring, I can’t help but hope it’s you. I miss you and love talking with you. When your partner is on your mind, pick up the phone and tell him how much you love him.
  • My heart belongs to you. Send him this romantic message to remind him that he’s the only guy for you.
  • I love you more than the miles that separate us. According to Barnett, this message “shows the longing, the love, and the impatience to be in his physical presence which deepens the connection between the couple." Feel free to add the exact number of miles between you and your love in this message.
  • The sound of your voice is music to my ears. This message might prompt him to give you a call on the spot.

Love notes for him

  • Instead of feeling sad we’re apart, I feel lucky. How many people can say they’ve found their soulmate anywhere in the world? Though long distance relationships are a challenge, true love is rare enough to make the hard parts worthwhile.
  • Our love is stronger than all the obstacles in the world. Nothing can break your incredible bond.
  • Every time I think of your face, I smile. You bring me so much joy even from afar.  Let him know that he's always on your mind with this sweet message.
  • Goodnight, baby. All I want is to wake up in your arms, but for now I’ll settle for seeing you in my dreams. He'll be charmed by this romantic goodnight text.

Romantic messages inspired by songs and quotes

  • “Hit me like a ray of sun burning through my darkest night. You’re the only one that I want, think I’m addicted to your light.” — Beyoncé, “Halo” These iconic lyrics are the perfect way to tell your man how much you're obsessed with him.
  • "You smiled, and then the spell was cast…And here we are in heaven, for you are mine at last." Barnett is a fan of this excerpt from Etta James’ “At Last,” as a romantic love message for him. “It’s a sensitive and vulnerable text that shows just how powerful their influence in your life is.”
  • “Some people want it all / But I don’t want nothing at all / If it ain’t you, baby / If I ain’t got you, baby.” — Alicia Keys, “If I Ain’t Got You” Without love, material things are meaningless. Show your man how much he means to you with these simple, soulful lyrics.
  • "You’re spring to me, all things to me." Barnett recommends this line from Nina Simone’s “Wild is the Wind” as a sentimental love message as it’s “another way of telling him how he’s changed your life and the way you see love.”
  • “In all the world, there is no heart for me like yours. In all the world, there is no love for you like mine.” — Maya Angelou Leave it to the writers to capture the ultimate expression of love. Your beloved will be left speechless.
  • “I could make you happy, make your dreams come true / Nothing that I wouldn’t do / Go to the ends of the Earth for you / To make you feel my love.” — Adele, “To Make You Feel My Love” This song has a more somber tone, but the sentiment stands: you would do anything to make your partner feel loved.
  • “I love you always, forever / Near and far, closer together / Everywhere I will be with you.” — Donna Lewis, “I Love You Always Forever” This catchy 90's tune will remind your man that time, distance, and space can't get in the way of your love.
  • “And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone’s bed / You put me on and said I was your favorite.” — Taylor Swift, “Cardigan” Even when the rest of the world seems to be against you, you can always count on your partner to bolster your confidence.

Love notes for him

  • “Don’t wanna close my eyes, I don’t wanna to fall asleep /’Cause I’d miss you baby, and I don’t wanna miss a thing.” — Aerosmith, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” These tender Aerosmith lyrics will show your man how much you cherish your time together.
  • “Forever, forever, you’ll stay in my heart and I will love you. Forever, and ever, we never will part, oh, how I love you.” — Aretha Franklin, “I Say A Little Prayer” This retro tune is just as sweet today as it was when it came out in 1968.
  • “I’m lucky I’m in love with my best friend / Lucky to have been where I have been / Lucky to be coming home again.” — Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz, “Lucky” Anyone would be lucky to receive these lyrics in a love note.
  • “Baby, it’s you / You’re the one I love / You’re the one I need / You’re the only one I see.” — Beyoncé, “Love on Top” Beyoncé said it best! These song lyrics double as words of affirmation to remind your man that he’s the only one for you.

Love notes for him

  • “If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day so I never have to live without you.” — A.A. Milne, “Winnie the Pooh” Could this message be any more adorable?
  • “Long live all the mountains we moved / I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you.” — Taylor Swift, “Long Live” This epic song from Taylor Swift will remind you both to look back on your most memorable moments together.
  • “In case you ever foolishly forget: I am never not thinking of you.” ― Virginia Woolf, “Selected Diaries” Woolf's message is the perfect balance of silly and sincere.
  • “Ain’t no other man can stand up next to you / Ain’t no other man on the planet does what you do / You’re the kinda guy a girl finds in a blue moon.” — Christina Aguilera, “Ain’t No Other Man” Send these lyrics to your partner to show him how much you appreciate his unique strengths.

Love notes for him

  • “You’ve brought a lot of sunshine into my life / You’ve filled me with happiness I never knew / You gave me more joy than I ever dreamed of / And no one, no one can take the place of you.” — Natalie Cole, “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)” If your man's smile lights up every room, these lyrics are a perfect way to tell him how much you adore him.
  • “There is no fear now / Let go and just be free / I will love you unconditionally.” — Katy Perry, “Unconditionally No matter what happens, you will always be stronger together. These lyrics are a reassuring way to express your commitment.
  • “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” — Harry Burns, “When Harry Met Sally” There's a reason this movie is one of the most popular rom-coms.
  • “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is while you’re in the world.” — Elton John, “Your Song” Once you've met your beloved, the sun shines more brightly and the skies seem even more vibrant.

A Short Speech on Love ❤️

Red Lighted Candles Christmas Gift

Love, surprisingly, has been equated with emotions. But is it all that is there to it? Emotions keep changing; don’t they? Today, you feel madly in love with someone; when the sun rises the next day you wonder where all the “love” you felt yesterday has gone; don’t you?

Blood Jesus Cleanse

So love does not properly belong to the realm of emotions; though emotions do colour our love with all kinds of splashes. Then what is love?

It is basically a decision to hold the other person in the highest esteem , value him or her above all else, and cherish that person like no other and hold him or her so close and dear to one’s heart.

Love is not about getting; it is about giving. Love is not about selfishness; it is about sacrifice. Love is not about being on top of the charts; it is about humility, the willingness to serve. Love is not about bragging; it is about doing things for the other without advertising. Love is not about covering up evil; it is about being transparent and living in the light. Love is not about falsehood; it is about speaking the truth.

Love is not static; it grows. The love of a parent for a child grows along with years; the love of a husband for his wife ideally should grow along with years and vice versa. The limitless potential for growth, for discovery, for being surprised, for finding joy in little things, are all what makes love, love.

Finally, we cannot think on love without thinking of God. The well known passage in the Bible speaks about love in this compelling way: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” * Not one of us can earn this love; but each one of us can respond to it.

So love is a response as well. Wishing you an ever-increasing capacity to respond to God’s everlasting love for you, the love of the members of your family , your friends and colleagues, and all those whom you come into contact with. At times when you respond in love to hate and evil behaviour, the other is also constrained to love!

Jesus—the Friend of Sinners!
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered , it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

— 1 Corinthians 13:4–8 Bible

30 Famous and Short Inspirational Speeches (5 minutes or less)

  • December 13, 2023

This post is all about the best short inspirational speeches.

Short Inspirational Speeches.

If you are in need of a quick boost of inspiration and motivation, you will find that in this post. I am one of those people who loves to get motivated. That sounds weird, right?

Well, a lot of people these days tend to give motivation a hard time because they don’t believe that it has lasting effects. In other words, they believe that what’s most important is your own self-discipline, because that’s what you have to rely on when motivation isn’t there.

And while I do agree with that sentiment in general, I will never pass up a great motivational podcast or YouTube video! 😀 There’s just something about them that even if they might not have lasting effects, they do truly help pump me up in the moment to get work done. And that’s usually what matters to me the most when I am looking for them in the first place.

So, here are the very best short motivational speeches so you can get that quick fix of motivation that you’re looking for, and ultimately move closer to your goals and dreams.

Short Inspirational Speeches

Believe in yourself speeches.

If you lack confidence or you are doubting yourself, these short motivational speeches will help you to believe in yourself again.

1. Rocky’s Inspirational Speech to His Son | ROCKY BALBOA

In less than 5 minutes, you’ll watch Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) explain to his son that if he wants to have the life he desires, he needs to believe in himself. He needs to stop listening to the people that tell him who he is, and instead go be his own person, and stop looking for someone to blame when things aren’t working out for him because ultimately it’s on HIM. This is one of the greatest inspirational speeches of all time.

2. Find Your Purpose | David Goggins – Motivational Speech

David Goggins is truly incredible. A former Navy SEAL, he has broken records and ran more races than you’d imagine. But the one thing that really stands out about him is his mindset.

Listen to this video if you want to be great. He tells you exactly what you need to do to get there.

Also, if you’ve never read David Goggins’ book “Can’t Hurt Me” , I highly recommend it. He talks about his rough upbringing, and how he was able to essentially become an entirely new person to become a Navy SEAL.

3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF – Motivational Video (ft. Jaret Grossman & Eric Thomas)

This video is all about how important it is to have the proper belief system. If you truly believe that you are one of the best, you will start acting that you are one of the best, and eventually you may just be one of the best.

4. DON’T LET YOUR DREAMS DIE – Motivational Speech

This YouTube short by Mel Robbins is so good, I had to share it. A light bulb went on in my head when I first watched this. If there is something that is always on your mind, don’t let it haunt you forever because you never put yourself out there to try it. Go and DO!

Motivational Speeches About Not Giving Up

The following short motivational speeches are all about not giving up on your dreams. If you are losing hope, these short motivational speeches will inspire you to keep going.

5. Brené Brown It’s Not The Critic Who Counts

This speech will give you chills, and it is packed with great lessons about life. Brené Brown is a researcher who went viral for a Ted Talk, and here she talks about how to overcome critics and to keep believing in yourself no matter what. If you are worried about what people think of you, you NEED to watch this.

6. Amazing Motivational Speech by Denzel Washington

This is another video that gave me chills. The main theme of this famous speech is “ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship”. Stay consistent even when it’s hard. Easy task after easy task won’t get you to where you want to be.

7. Steve Harvey – Inspirational Speech | Motivational Short Video | Incredible You

This short motivational speech by Steve Harvey is short but impactful. If you are someone who stepped out of your comfort zone to pursue something really difficult, and you’re thinking about giving up, this speech may just prevent you from doing so.

8. Ed Mylett on The Power of One More

Ed Mylett shares the story of how his father stayed sober until his dying day, and how Ed himself uses that same philosophy to never give up. Personal stories like these are always the most inspiring.

By the way, if you REALLY want to push yourself and become the best, read Ed Mylett’s most recent book on this same topic, “The Power Of One More” .

Motivational Speeches If You’re Feeling Behind

Are you feeling behind in life? If so, let’s change that. Watch these videos to be reminded that you are on your own unique path. You have no competition other than your past self. These short motivational videos will help you believe that.

9. Before You Feel Pressure – WATCH THIS | by Jay Shetty

Jay Shetty talks to a school class about how there’s no one “perfect” life timeline to follow, and that we are all on our own clock.

10. Kevin Hart Motivational Speech

If you’ve made mistakes in your life (haven’t we all) this is a great story from Kevin Hart (famous comedian and actor) that will remind you of the power of making mistakes and pushing through hard times.

11. Oprah Winfrey | 5 Minutes For The NEXT 50 Years of Your LIFE

In this video, Oprah talks about the importance of really knowing who you are and what you want in your life. She talks about surrounding yourself with great people, and how to have enormous success. “Let excellence be your brand.”

Listen To These If You Need Perspective

Sometimes in life, we get so caught up in the day to day that we forget what truly matters – the people we love. If you are having trouble with something in life, give these videos a listen, because they just might help you realize what is really important.

12. Arnold Schwarzenegger – Organize Your Day | 1 MINUTE MOTIVATIONAL VIDEO

Are you the kind of person who always complains that you don’t have enough time to do something? If so, you’re not alone. We are all busy humans, running around doing a million things. But if you aren’t prioritizing what you know you should be doing, listen to this video.

13. How to Judge Your Life Using 3 Simple Questions | Brendon Burchard Speech| Goalcast

Have you ever heard of Mortality Motivation? It’s essentially what it sounds like… being motivated by the impending reality of your death. It sounds a little morbid, but it’s actually quite beautiful and it can be really beneficial if you harness it for good.

In this video by motivational speaker Brendon Burchard, he shares how a car accident when he was 19 gave him mortality motivation and changed everything for him.

14. FALL, SUFFER AND LEARN | MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH BY OPRAH WINFREY

This speech by Oprah was given to Harvard graduates, and it’s a unique speech because she talks about failing, even after the major success of her television show for over 20 years.

It’s refreshing to hear that even the most successful people fail. What really matters, though, is what you do with your failure. Do you learn from it and move on? Or do you give up?

15. YOU VS YOU – Best Motivational Video

This is a pretty intense video about competition. If your #1 competition is someone else, you need to change your perspective. Your only competition is YOU. The only thing preventing you from moving forward is you.

16. The Speech That Brought This Entire School To Tears

This is a speech about a man who never really paid much attention to his mother, until she passed away. It’s an emotional reminder to cherish the time you have with your loved ones, because you never know if the next time you see them will be the last time.

In my opinion, this speaker embodies many qualities of the best motivational speakers because he really knows how to capture the audience’s attention and pull on their heart strings.

17. 5 Minutes to Start Your Day Right! – MORNING MOTIVATION

This motivational speech is by a Navy SEAL who will remind you to start each day with a task completed, respect everyone, take risks, step up during tough times, and never give up. If you do these things, the next generation, and the generations that follow, will live better lives than we live today.

18. The Real You – Jim Carrey

This video is one of the best motivational speech examples because it reminds you of something so important: sometimes we can be so focused on earning more money, gaining fame, and becoming admired that we lose ourselves or we lose sight of what’s really important to us in the process.

Jim Carrey talks about how he is a great example of that. He got all of the money, fame, and admiration, and admits that that wasn’t really who he was. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that money and fame, or even getting to the top of the corporate ladder, while nice, aren’t going to be the thing that brings you fulfillment when it’s all said and done.

19. Ed Mylett Motivational Speech

I posted another motivational video by Ed Mylett above, but if you don’t know much about him, prepare to have your world rocked. He’s probably my absolute favorite motivational speaker because he is successful and he works hard, but he’s also (seemingly) a kind, family guy who’s been through a few things.

In this video, he talks about being “the one” that changed his family tree. Take a listen because I’m sure it’ll get you thinking on whether or not you can be “the one” in YOUR family.

P.S. If you love personal growth content, you should check out Ed Mylett’s podcast . I listen to it every week and it is one of my favorites.

20. If You Feel LOST, LAZY & UNMOTIVATED In Life, WATCH THIS! | Tony Robbins Motivation

Great Inspirational Speeches About Hard Work

How hard do you think you work? Could you be doing more? If there’s a little voice inside of your heart that knows you could be doing more and better, these motivational videos about the value of hard work will help you push yourself.

And a side note: your chances of having good luck increase the harder and longer you work.

21. You’re Not Tired, You’re Just Weak – David Goggins Motivation

If you’re feeling lazy or like you don’t want to do something, watch this video til 2:25 . It will give you the push you need to put your head down and do the work. It’ll remind you to keep pursuing your goals and to keep challenging yourself. Key takeaway: push yourself beyond your perceived limits.

22. Hard Work & Patience – A Gary Vaynerchuk Original Film

If you want to be motivated to work hard, listen to Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary Vaynerchuk is a creative genius known for his marketing tactics. This famous motivational speech is all about playing “the long game”, as in, working for a long time and having patience instead of working hard for a short period of time and expecting to win quickly.

23. OBSESSION – Best Motivational Speech

This is one of my favorite short motivational speeches because it makes me feel a little more normal for being “weird”. I’m the kind of person who chooses to work on the weekends instead of hanging out with people. Crazy, right? But it’s because I’m working toward a dream of mine and it’s something that’s really important to me. The most important thing to remember: it’s okay to devote yourself to something. It’s the only way to get what you want in life.

24. WORK LIKE HELL – Best Motivational Video

This is a series of motivational speeches about doing a little bit more and outworking your competition. I’m not going to lie – I’m up late writing this post and listening to this very video is what’s motivating me to keep going.

25. The video EVERY woman should watch!

Whether or not you’re a Rachel Hollis fan may be up for debate (and that’s okay!) but I happen to think she’s a great motivational speaker. This entire speech will inspire you to work hard and take massive action – today.

26. NEVER SURRENDER – Powerful Motivational Speech (by Kobe Bryant)

This one minute video by the late Kobe Bryant is one of the most famous short speeches. I read a book recently by his former personal trainer and I learned that Kobe really outworked everyone. He talks about a quote in this video that really stuck with him, and I think it’s great advice if you’re the kind of person who needs motivation to keep working hard.

Motivational Speeches About Working Smart

Have you ever heard the saying “work smarter, not harder”? That saying is all about ensuring that the work you are doing is actually efficient. Are you getting to where you want to go with all of the work that you are putting in? Are you getting closer to your goals and your dreams? Or are you sprinting like a hamster on a wheel and just running in circles?

Here are great videos on the importance of working hard but also working intentionally.

27. SET SYSTEMS RATHER THAN GOALS – Motivational Speech – James Clear

A goal gives you a sense of direction, but if you don’t spell out precisely how you are going to get to a goal, it is useless. You must develop systems. Listen to this James Clear video to gain valuable life lessons.

By the way, James Clear is an author who wrote perhaps my favorite book of all time: “Atomic Habits” . It’s life-changing if you haven’t read it yet.

28. Matthew McConaughey | 5 Minutes for the NEXT 50 Years of Your LIFE

This is one of the best motivational speeches of all time about how to live a great life for YOU. It’s filled with little pieces of wisdom that’ll really get you thinking about how you live your life and in what direction you want to go.

29. Visualization is the key – Bob Proctor

Do you believe in the Law of Attraction? If not, I have to say I’m surprised! I’ve experienced it in my own life more than once, and it is incredibly powerful. Here’s a great video that sums up the power of visualization, and if you want to learn more about the Law of Attraction or manifestation in general, read this post .

This video shows the true power of words, thoughts, and feelings that you have.

30. How to Stay Motivated – Carla Harris

Here is a YouTube short with very practical advice from Carla Harris on HOW to stay motivated. It’s all about having a vision!

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Love and Care’.

It is universally acknowledged that all living things, not just human beings, deserve love and care in the world. What exactly do these two terms entail?

Google defines the term love to be “an intense feeling of deep affection.” Similarly, the definition of care would be “the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.” Thus, love and care are two terms that go hand in hand- you care for someone you love and vice versa.

From these definitions, it is crystal clear why living things as a whole, especially humans, crave some love and care. We all need some love and care in order to feel emotionally well and in a mentally good place. Studies point out that every living thing, including plants, requires sufficient attention as such to thrive without ceasing to exist,

Love and Compassion

Graduates of the Class of 2024, family members, and friends: It gives me great pleasure to greet you today and to offer a few words on this celebratory occasion.

But first, there is a wonderful Yale tradition that I would like to honor right now:

May I ask all the families and friends here today to rise and to recognize the outstanding—and graduating—members of the Class of 2024?

And now, may I ask the Class of 2024 to consider all those who have supported your arrival at this milestone, and to please rise and recognize them ?

I remember well the pomp and pageantry of my commencement weekend. And I share in the many emotions you are likely feeling right now after being part of this community for several years, and as you consider how your roles will soon change from students to alumni—and mine from president to faculty member.

Like the Class of 2024, I graduated as my university president was completing his service. Unlike the Class of 2024, my first years in college had not been disrupted by a pandemic. Presumably like you, I wondered what message the president would impart for his final words. Of course, as I thought about what to say here today, I considered this same question. What came to mind was how each of us had different journeys to arrive at this day. Here is mine: Like many immigrants, my father’s parents were poor in means but rich in culture and spirit. They came to the United States by way of Warsaw and Jerusalem—and later met each other on a ship crossing the Atlantic, between their worlds, old and new.

When my grandfather arrived in New York, he not only had a new country but a new name. No longer Yitzchak Leib Soloveitchik, in America he became Louis Salovey. He changed his family name in an effort to fit into his new surroundings, but he made sure to retain four letters—l-o-v-e—“love,” which I like to think of as a tribute to the family he left behind and a foundation for the one he would build.

Love and compassion were creeds by which he lived. It was about these virtues that I spoke with you four years ago as you entered Yale—and now, here today, that I want to emphasize as you prepare to depart it. [1]

One of the earliest, if not most striking, demonstrations of compassion I recall took place soon after my seventh birthday, when a rabbi and a reverend marched together toward justice alongside other faith leaders. Cradling a Torah in his arms—and humanity in his heart—Rabbi Everett Gendler joined the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through the streets of Selma, Alabama on what became known as “Turnaround Tuesday” in March 1965. One of Rabbi Gendler’s great contributions was involving American Jews in the civil rights movement. And many, including my parents, heeded that call.

The extraordinary image of Dr. King and Rabbi Gendler marching alongside one another is seared in my memory. Theirs was a coalition of different faiths but a shared morality against forces devoid of it. And, if I might add a postscript, not long after participating in the Selma campaign, Rabbi Gendler welcomed his first daughter into a world he was working to repair. Today, she sits behind me as dean of Yale’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

As Rabbi Gendler noted at the time, “The effects of love, thought the ancients, were not simply personal, [but] social as well.” [2] “Love may not be all we need,” he added, “but neither is it entirely beside the point.” Dr. King echoed these sentiments while speaking to Rabbi Gendler in what would be his final public interview in 1968. “We need a movement now to transmute rage,” he said, “into a positive, constructive force.” [3] Those words resonate today. They remind us that we need to reject hate and rage—and instead find our common love for life, for community, and for peace.

Now, to be sure, the challenges before us—climate change, racial injustice, armed conflict, and extremism, to name only a few—stoke the indignation of any individual of conscience. And across this country, we’ve seen rising antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of bigotry. Without anger, we would be reconciled to accept the unacceptable, tolerate the intolerable, and thereby consign ourselves to a status quo in need of repair. Without anger, we would be bereft of the fuel necessary to fight against prejudice and violence around the globe.

So, what, then, are the grounds that support the translation of outrage into compassion, as Dr. King advised?

In thinking about the answer to this question, I am reminded of these lines of poetry from the Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray, eminent Yale graduate, civil rights icon, and namesake of one of our residential colleges:

But love, alas , holds me captive here

Consigned to sacrificial flame, to burn

And find no heart’s surcease until

Its more enduring uses I may learn. [4]

In the fall of 1963—at a pivotal moment in the civil rights struggle—the Yale Political Union invited George Wallace, Alabama’s hate-spewing governor, to speak on campus. The invitation ignited controversy at Yale—and provided occasion for activists like Pauli Murray to respond to his bigotry measure for measure. Instead, she showed the strength of her commitment to “destroy segregation by positive and embracing methods.” [5]

Wallace, of course, personified Southern hostility to integration. Earlier that year, he famously stood on the portico of the Alabama State Capitol and declared in his inaugural speech, “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever!” [6] And just days before he was invited to Yale, Klansmen bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, killing four Black schoolgirls and wounding 22 others—an act of domestic terrorism for which Wallace was blamed as an instigator.

So perhaps it comes as no surprise that Kingman Brewster, Yale’s president, urged students to rescind their invitation. New Haven Mayor Richard Lee, meanwhile—also concerned about the tensions Wallace would inflame—deemed him “officially unwelcome” in the city of New Haven. [7] More surprising is that Pauli Murray, a law school student at the time, disagreed. In an astonishing display of “drawing a circle of inclusion” large enough to incorporate George Wallace, she wrote to President Brewster in support of his right to speak at Yale.

To be sure, Dr. Murray loathed what Wallace represented. “By every cultural, spiritual, and psychological resource at my disposal,” she wrote, “I shall seek to destroy the institution of segregation…[but] I will not submit to segregation myself.” [8] Dr. Murray, rather, maintained an abiding belief in the power of redemption over retribution—even, and most especially, for a man who threatened the principles to which she had dedicated her life.

The division sowed by Wallace stands as one of this country’s darkest chapters. But his story has a postscript—one that affirms the might of Pauli Murray’s approach.

About a decade later, Wallace—then a candidate for president—was paralyzed after an assassination attempt and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. As he was recovering in the hospital from the shooting, he had an unexpected visitor: Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and a rival to Wallace in 1972 presidential politics.

Understandably, Chisholm’s visit left her staff concerned. How could she sit by the bedside of someone she stood so fervently—so virtuously—against? “Sometimes,” she told them, “we have to remember we’re all human beings. And I may be able to teach him something, to help him regain his humanity, to maybe make him open his eyes to make him see something that he has not seen.” [9] And so she went.

In a remarkable expression of compassion and a common humanity, Chisholm told Wallace “I wouldn’t want what happened to you to happen to anyone.” The callous George Wallace wept. And to this day, his daughter maintains, “it was after [this] visit that he started to change.” [10] “Shirley Chisholm,” she continues, “planted a seed of new beginnings in my father’s heart,” culminating in the record number of appointments of African Americans he made to state positions during his final term as governor.

Wallace would later earn an honorary degree from the historically Black Tuskegee University—and the forgiveness of civil rights leaders like John Lewis, himself the recipient of an honorary degree from Yale, “because to do otherwise—to hate him,” Lewis posited, “would only perpetuate the evil system we sought to destroy.” [11]

Philosopher Hannah Arendt, on whom Yale also bestowed an honorary degree, eloquently advocated for this doctrine decades before Shirley Chisholm exemplified it. The “faculty of forgiving,” she wrote, “is the exact opposite of vengeance…whereby far from putting an end to the consequences of the first misdeed, everybody remains bound to the process, permitting the chain reaction…to take its unhindered course.” “Forgiving, in other words, is the only reaction which does not merely re-act but acts anew and unexpectedly, unconditioned by the act which provoked it and therefore freeing from its consequences.” [12]

Dr. King called this redemptive approach the Strength to Love , declaring in a refrain with which you are no doubt familiar that “returning hate for hate [only] multiplies hate.” [13] So, we can take pride in the fact that precisely sixty years ago, Yale presented Dr. King an honorary degree with a citation that extolled his “steadfast refusal to countenance violence in resistance to injustice.” [14]

For our part, as we face complex challenges that call out for concerted action, we would do well to heed his example, which requires us to inhibit our desire to dismiss those with whom we believe we cannot develop common purpose.

It is not enough to retreat into silos alongside those who are already inclined to agree with us. Nor is it effective to ostracize, call out, shame, or silence well-meaning others who do not.

Progress depends on our willingness to work together to solve common problems: to extend love and grace, compassion and cooperation, with one another, and, through these means, to build consensus.

By bridging differences—by daring to choose love and compassion over rage and hate—we can bring about the meaningful, sustainable change needed in society.

We can bring the world you will soon enter a little closer to the one we desire.

Let’s get started together. Let’s get started today.

And for me personally: At moments like this, speakers of Hebrew (my grandfather’s native language) don’t like to say “good-bye” but, rather, L’heit ra-oat; until we meet again.

Congratulations, Class of 2024.

Watch: Woman with 'Trump is a Nazi' sign crashes ex-president's Bronx rally

M AGA is planting its flag in the South Bronx . When the red-capped set arrived at the Thursday event , at least one protester came to crash the party, holding a handmade sign that read: "WARNING: TRUMP is a NAZI".

The bespectacled woman was standing at the rally site of Crotona Park where Trump supporters filed in. In a short video clip, some encircled her.

"We, you know, we love you, we gotta kill them with kindness and love," announced on man wearing what appeared to be a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap.

"We welcome you to the movement," he told her. "We're gonna show the word that the Trump supporters are love, love, [sic] we love you."

Off-camera a woman's voice could be heard shouting out: "Who's paying you?"

That provoked a bearded man standing by the woman with the sign to answer for her: "She's paid by Soros to be here."

"I know the facts," the woman exclaimed with a smile.

"I know the conspiracy is right there," the one man who said he loved her, added.

Then the woman turned the sign around and it read: "WARNING: TRUMP HATES YOU."

"Oh my goodness," the man who kept preaching love said. "God bless you, baby. Bye-bye."

Trump holding a rally in one of the bluest boroughs of New York City is unique. The New York Times reported that back in 2020, President Biden won the Bronx by 68%.

Moments later, the footage shows the same woman engaging with another swath of Trump supporters.

"Would you like to know what I think," she asked one man wearing a patriotic American-themed sweatshirt.

"I'll let you talk, yeah."

She continued: "First of all, I think it's really important that presidents are moral, that they are honest. That they are truthful. That they don't bully [sic] people... Trump was just convicted of rape last year. Do you want a rapist as president?

The man quickly came back: "What about Joe Biden and his daughter who wrote that dairy?"

"I'm talking about Trump," she explained.

"You brought it up," he told her. "I'm bringing up something with Joe Biden."

She then laughed and told him, "You're listening to conspiracy."

"She wrote it," the man said. "She wrote it herself. You're telling me his own daughter is a conspiracy theorist?"

The protester tried to ask the original question again. "Can you answer my question? Do you want a rapist for your president?"

"Where's the proof," he said. "Those are just words."

The woman then tried to explain: "He was convicted in court."

The man wasn't convinced. He told her: "That's because the system is against him. Everybody's against him."

Breaking news, trump will win if he does more speeches like the one in the bronx.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

“We are going to win New York!” Donald Trump boasted at what he described as his Bronx “love fest” Thursday evening.

Well …  maybe .

But Trump’s unexpected rally did show he can win enough of the country to take back the presidency.

First was the setting itself.

Former President Donald Trump attends a campaign rally in the Bronx on May 23, 2024.

You don’t see Joe Biden flying into Texas or Louisiana for a rally; he has a hard enough time convincing registered Democrats that he’s not a failed president.

Trump has an energized base, giving him the flexibility to, say, spend a weekend on a New Jersey beach or an evening in the Boogie Down Bronx.

He’s actively courting black and Hispanic voters, and it’s having an impact.

Democrats have taken these groups for granted for so long that Trump rightly sees that they’re hungry for change.

Biden’s speech at Morehouse College was an appeal to victimhood, claiming that America has been and always will be a racist nation.

Trump is pitching opportunity, a better life.

Speaking of which: Trump spent part of his Bronx speech talking about his career as a real estate developer, about perseverance, about his love of New York City.

It’s a welcome change from the parade of grievances that marked his rallies last year.

Our advice to Trump: Do this more! Your business background was part of what appealed to voters in 2016.

People don’t just want a litany of what is wrong, they want to know how you’re going to improve their lives.

You don’t need to win the Bronx in 2024.

But keep up the themes that you brought there, and you’ll win all the swing states you need to.

Stephen King says finishing one of his stories decades after he started it felt like "calling into a canyon of time."

Stephen King is out with a new collection of short stories.

As you might expect from the reigning King of Horror, some are terrifying. Some are creepy. Others are laugh-out-loud funny. And one of them took him 45 years to write.

The book is a collection of 12 stories, called You Like it Darker .

Stephen King's legacy of horror

Over the course of his decades-long career as a writer, King has learned there's no taking a story too far.

"I found out – to sort of my delight and sort of my horror – that you can't really gross out the American public," King told NPR.

He spoke with All Things Considered host Mary Louise Kelly about the book, destiny and getting older.

This interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

Mary Louise Kelly: I want to start by asking you about the story, The Answer Man . You began it when you were 30. You finished it when you were 75. What the heck happened?

Stephen King: Well, I lost it. What happens with me is I will write stories and they don't always get done. And the ones that don't get done go in a drawer and I forget all about them. And about five years ago, these people started to collect all the stuff that was finished and all this stuff that was unfinished and put it in an archive. They were going through everything – desk drawers, wastebaskets underneath the desk, every place. I'm not exactly a very organized person. My nephew John Leonard found this particular story, which was written in the U.N. Plaza Hotel back in the '70s, I think. And he said, "You know, this is pretty good. You really ought to finish this." And I read it and I said, "You know, I think I know how to finish it now." So I did.

Kelly: Well give people a taste. The first six or so pages that you had written back in the hotel, it becomes a 50-page story. What was it that you decided was worth returning to?

King: Well, I like the concept: This young man is driving along, and he's trying to figure out whether or not he should join his parents' white shoe law firm in Boston, or whether he should strike out on his own. And he finds this man on the road who calls himself the Answer Man. And he says, "I will answer three of your questions for $25, and you have 5 minutes to ask these questions." So I thought to myself, I'm going to write this story in three acts. One while the questioner is young, and one when he's middle aged, and one when he's old. The question that I ask myself is: "Do you want to know what happens in the future or not?"

Kelly: This story, like many of your stories, is about destiny – whether some things are meant to happen no matter what we do, no matter what choices we make. Do you believe that's true?

King: The answer is I don't know. When I write stories, I write to find out what I really think. And I don't think there's any real answer to that question.

'Carrie' turns 50! Here are the best Stephen King novels — chosen by you

Books You Love

'carrie' turns 50 here are the best stephen king novels — chosen by you.

Kelly: You do describe in the afterword of the book that going back in your seventies to complete a story you had begun as a young man gave you, and I'll quote your words, "The oddest sense of calling into a canyon of time." Can you explain what that means?

King: Well, you listen for the echo to come back. When I was a young man, I had a young man's ideas about The Answer Man . But now, as a man who has reached, let us say, a certain age, I'm forced to write from experience and just an idea of what it might be like to be an old man. So yeah, it felt to me like yelling and then waiting for the echo to come back all these years later.

Kelly: Are there subjects you shy away from, where you think about it and think, "You know what, that might be one step too creepy, too weird?"

King: I had one novel called Pet Cemetery that I wrote and put in a drawer because I thought, "Nobody will want to read this. This is just too awful." I wanted to write it to see what would happen, but I didn't think I would publish it. And I got into a contractual bind, and I needed to do a book with my old company. And so I did. And I found out – sort of to my delight and sort of to my horror – that you can't really gross out the American public. You can't go too far.

Kelly: It was a huge bestseller, as I recall.

King: Yeah, it's a bestseller and it was a movie. And yeah, the same thing is true with It , about the killer clown who preys on children

Kelly: Who still haunts my nightmares, I have to tell you. You've written how many books at this point?

King: I don't know.

King: Really? In our recent coverage of you, we've said everything from 50 to 70.

King: I think it's probably around 70, but I don't keep any count. I remember thinking as a kid that it would be a really fine lifetime to be able to write 100 novels.

Kelly: Oh my gosh. Well you sound like you're still having a lot of fun, so I hope you have quite a few more novels for us to come.

King: That'd be good.

Invoking Struggle and Faith, Biden Reaches Out at Morehouse

Addressing graduates of the historically Black college in Georgia, Mr. Biden spoke to a crucial segment of the electorate and sought to distinguish himself from Donald J. Trump.

Here’s what to know about Biden’s remarks.

Biden calls on morehouse college graduates to defend democracy, in a commencement speech at morehouse, the historically black men’s college in atlanta, president biden condemned white supremacy and “extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of morehouse.”.

You started college just as George Floyd was murdered and there was a reckoning on race. It’s natural to wonder if democracy you hear about actually works for you. What is democracy if Black men are being killed in the street? What is democracy if the trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind? What is democracy if you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot? Well that’s my commitment to you. To show you democracy, democracy, democracy, is still the way. That Black men are being killed in the streets, we bear witness. For me, that means to call out the poison of white supremacy. Graduates, this is what we’re up against: extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse. And they peddle a fiction, a caricature, of what being a man is about — tough talk, abusing power, bigotry. But that’s not you. It’s not us. You all know and demonstrate what it really means to be a man. Being a man is about strength of respect and dignity. It’s about showing up because it’s too late, if you have to ask. It’s about giving hate no safe harbor.

President Biden invoked scripture and lessons from his own tragic past on Sunday in a commencement address to hundreds of young Black men at Morehouse College, saying he believes there are “extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message” of the prestigious institution.

Mr. Biden’s speech, delivered at the historically Black men’s college in Atlanta, put him directly in front of hundreds who represent a slice of the electorate that is drifting away from him over the war in Gaza and growing apathy about their choices ahead of the election. Mr. Biden used the moment to say that manhood was not about “tough talk” and “bigotry” but about calling out hate.

“Their idea of being a man is toxic,” Mr. Biden told the graduates, a reference to adversaries he did not name — but, given that his other events this weekend were focused on attacking his Republican competitor, Donald J. Trump, it was little mystery who he was talking about. “That is not you. That is not us. Being a man is about strength and respect and dignity.”

Those who stormed the Capitol with Confederate flags “are called patriots by some,” he said — a clear reference to Mr. Trump. “Not in my house.”

Mr. Biden’s speech was his first significant appearance before college students since protests over the war in Gaza began roiling campuses. For a ceremony in which students are discouraged even from decorating their caps, the signs of protest were respectful but noticeable: A small group of graduates turned to sit with their backs to Mr. Biden as he spoke, and several graduates wore the kaffiyeh, a traditional scarf associated with the Palestinians, draped over their shoulders. Some parents urged their graduating sons not to protest.

Mr. Biden also called for an immediate cease-fire and said that his administration was working to secure one. He said that members of his family had been upset by the war, a group that includes Jill Biden, the first lady, who has urged her husband in private to bring a stop to it.

“What’s happening in Gaza, in Israel, is heartbreaking,” Mr. Biden said. “It’s a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”

In a statement, Morehouse said that discussions between White House officials and students, faculty and alumni had helped shape Mr. Biden’s speech and his calls for a cease-fire in Gaza. The school also praised its graduates. “It is fitting that a moment of organized, peaceful activism would occur on our campus while the world is watching to continue a critical conversation,” the statement read.

During his 27-minute speech, Mr. Biden tried to stress to the graduates — none of whom stood for him as he took the lectern — that throughout his life he had respected and espoused the same ideas they care about.

He said he had worked throughout his life, as a public defender, senator and president, to correct inequalities. He outlined the work his administration has done that he and his advisers believe deserves more credit than it receives, including the forgiveness of large amounts of student loan debt and reducing the poverty rate for Black children.

“We know Black history is American history,” Mr. Biden said at one point, urging the crowd to “check my record,” which includes choosing the first Black female Supreme Court justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and the first Black woman to hold the vice presidency, Kamala Harris.

By focusing on matters of adversity and strength, Mr. Biden also sought to strike a contrast with Mr. Trump not on the grounds of politics or policy but through the lessons of keeping faith in moments of hopelessness. He spoke of the death of his first wife and daughter as well as his eldest son, Beau, from brain cancer.

He told the Morehouse graduates, a class that weathered the chaos of the pandemic and the tumult of widespread protests over the police killings of Black men, that it was natural for them to question whether there was a place for them in democracy at all.

“What is democracy when Black men are being killed in the streets?” he said. “What is democracy when a trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind? What is democracy when you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?”

Repeatedly, Mr. Biden reached for religious inspiration, recalling that Jesus was buried on Friday and resurrected on Sunday, leaving Saturday as a day of hopelessness. He suggested that 2020 — the year he was elected, with its twin traumas of the Covid-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd — had been one such Saturday.

At one point, Mr. Biden said, “I’ve learned there was no easy optimism but by faith, by faith you can find redemption.”

Mr. Biden, who has a bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Oval Office — and who is old enough to have shared his memories of Dr. King’s assassination in his speech — walked into commencement on Sunday unsure of how the crowd would receive him.

Morehouse, which was established in Atlanta in 1867, is a school whose culture is steeped in tradition. Students spend their years working toward becoming the embodiment of the Morehouse man: well traveled, well read and civically engaged. As the alma mater of Dr. King, there is also a proud history of protesting for social justice.

Mr. Biden’s visit to Morehouse drew the objections of some faculty members, alumni and students, who have voiced anger over the war in Gaza and the American government’s support for Israel. The tension drew so much attention that the school’s president, David A. Thomas, publicly warned that he would stop the commencement if graduates shouted at the president or disrupted the event.

The men of Morehouse found ways to work their opposition to the war into the ceremony. DeAngelo Jeremiah Fletcher, the class valedictorian, took the stage with the Palestinian flag pinned on his stole and on his cap.

“It is my stance as a Morehouse man, nay, as a human being, to call for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, in the Gaza Strip,” Mr. Fletcher said. Mr. Biden joined the crowd in standing up and clapping when Mr. Fletcher finished, and he shook the graduate’s hand.

But by the end of Mr. Biden’s speech, signs of support were visible, too. As Mr. Biden received an honorary doctorate of law, Mr. Thomas praised the president for listening to the concerns of the graduating class. And some people chanted “four more years” as Mr. Biden left the stage.

After addressing Morehouse, Mr. Biden was set to travel to Detroit to speak at a dinner hosted by the N.A.A.C.P.

Hitting two battleground states in eight hours was the clearest sign yet that Mr. Biden is serious about reintroducing himself to voters who carried him to the White House in 2020 and whose support he will need to win to stay in office for a second term.

In 2020 , 95 percent of Black women and 87 percent of Black men voted for Mr. Biden, according to the Pew Research Center. But in April, only 55 percent of Black voters told Pew that they approved of his job performance. A recent poll by Ipsos and The Washington Post showed that 62 percent of Black Americans planned to vote in 2024, down from 74 percent in 2020.

In recent days, both Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris have traveled outside of Washington to host events geared toward bringing those voters back into the fold.

Mr. Biden’s trip to Detroit comes as the latest New York Times/Siena College poll shows him winning support from less than half of Black voters in Michigan in a five-way race. In 2020, he won more than 90 percent of Black voters in the state, exit polls show.

The war in Gaza and concerns about the economy are driving factors behind what analysts say is an increase in apathy. In Michigan, nearly nine in 10 Black voters rated the economy as being in “fair” or “poor” condition, a higher rate than white voters, the Times/Siena poll found.

Alexis Wiley, the founder of a strategic communications firm in Detroit and a former member of the Democratic National Committee, said the Biden administration had to do more to communicate its victories.

“I think that they’re finally catching up to the fact that people aren’t feeling great,” Ms. Wiley said, “and now there’s this mad dash to try to correct it.”

Reporting was contributed by Nicholas Nehamas in Washington and Chevaz Clarke-Williams , Alan Blinder and Sean Keenan in Atlanta.

Biden asks Black voters to align with him in defending democracy.

President Biden on Sunday appealed to the graduating men of Morehouse College, and Black voters by extension, to align themselves with him on the side of democracy and against the forces of white supremacy that have coursed through American politics.

“It’s natural to wonder if the democracy you hear about actually works for you,” he said in a half-hour commencement speech. “What is democracy when Black men are being killed in the streets? What is democracy when a trail of broken promises still leave Black communities behind? What is democracy when you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?”

He condemned both the “extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse” and what he called false notions of what “manhood” really is.

Repeatedly, Mr. Biden reached for religious inspiration, recalling that Jesus was buried on Friday and resurrected on Sunday, leaving Saturday as a day of hopelessness. He suggested that 2020 — the year he was elected, with its twin traumas of the Covid-19 pandemic and the police killing of George Floyd and the protests that it ignited — had been one such Saturday.

“In our lives, in our nation, we have those Saturdays to bear witness to the day before glory,” he said to the graduating class, largely made up of students who were barred from in-person high school graduations because of the pandemic. “What work is done on Saturday can move pain to purpose.”

Left unsaid was how Mr. Biden’s administration and the current political moment fit into that metaphor.

Mr. Biden highlighted policies that he said had disproportionately harmed Black voters, like a law enacted in Georgia in 2021 that placed more restrictions on ballot access. One provision outlawed giving voters water or snacks while they wait in line and has drawn the ire of Democrats nationwide.

“What the hell is that all about?” Mr. Biden asked.

He also underlined the policies his administration has championed that he said were meant to improve Black communities, like increased funding to historically Black colleges and reconnecting Black neighborhoods decimated by highway construction. “Instead of forcing you to be 10 times better,” he said, “we’re breaking down doors to save 100 more opportunities.”

After spending most of the morning marching on sidewalks outside campus, as police requested, a group of about 100 pro-Palestinian demonstrators has taken to the street. The march, which includes some Morehouse students and faculty members, is now blocking southbound traffic on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard, a road named for the late minister and civil rights leader.

As Biden concluded his speech, guests seated in the V.I.P. section chanted “four more years.”

As Biden was being presented with his honorary degree, several students walked out .

This moment, where Biden is receiving an honorary degree, was more protested than his speech itself in some circles. Now that he’s received the recognition, Biden could technically be considered a “Morehouse man” — something many students and alumni disagreed with.

Biden makes a bit of a show for the cameras, smiling and pointing to his stole, after receiving his honorary degree.

That was a difficult needle to thread for the president, who went into this speech aware that there was a protest movement against his appearance here. But the president of Morehouse just praised him for “listening” to the concerns of the graduating class.

Alan Blinder

Alan Blinder

The president is finished. I clocked Biden’s speech at roughly 27 minutes, a bit shorter than Barack Obama’s 33-minute commencement address at Morehouse in 2013.

Black leaders and Democratic strategists have long warned that the biggest challenge this November will not be Black voters’ drift to voting for Trump or other Republican candidates but that they may stay home altogether. This speech — with its heavy allusions to democracy, manhood and the rich history of Black institutions like Morehouse — is meant to inspire groups like this to vote. And, even more, to get others in their communities to do the same.

Shane Goldmacher

When Biden puts it in such quick succession, his links to the Black community’s top political leaders are fairly remarkable. He was vice president to the first Black president; he named the first Black woman to serve as vice president; he appointed the first Black woman to the Supreme Court. Yet early polls show him winning a smaller share of Black voters that most Democrats.

It was not a foregone conclusion that Biden’s address would continue without protests. But he spoke largely uninterrupted.

“Whether you’re young or old, I know what endures. The strength and wisdom of faith endures,” Biden says, acknowledging a concern among many young voters who I have talked to: the president’s age.

“I know I don’t look like I’ve been around very long,” Biden jokes, crossing himself.

Lisa Lerer

“She’s tough, guys,” he adds.

Biden said that a Morehouse Man would become president one day, right after an “A.K.A. from Howard,” all but name-checking the vice president, Kamala Harris.

Biden lays out the stakes of 2024 for this crowd, saying there are “extremist forces aligned against the meaning and message of Morehouse.”

Biden says those who stormed the Capitol with Confederate flags “are called patriots by some” — a clear reference to Donald Trump. “Not in my house,” he says.

President Biden also makes mention of Georgia’s stringent election laws. One provision that outlaws giving water or snacks to those waiting in line at the polls drew outrage nationwide.

The invoking of his own family’s frustration was very revealing.

Biden said that his family was angry and affected by what is happening in Gaza. We reported recently that Jill Biden, the first lady, has urged him to find a way to stop it .

Biden seems to be spending more time talking about Israel and Gaza than he spent discussing, say, student loan debt or education policy.

“What’s happening in Gaza in Israel is heartbreaking,” Biden says. “It’s a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.” Biden says he’s been “working around the clock” for an immediate ceasefire. Jake Sullivan, his national security adviser, is Saudi Arabia and Israel this weekend for talks with top leaders.

This Biden speech shows a president torn between the frustrated feelings of many voters of his and the nation’s shortcomings, and the economic statistics that he hopes take hold in their view of his presidency this fall. “Record numbers of Black Americans have jobs,” he says, while acknowledging that is not enough.

Dodgers Dugout: Mookie Betts at short: How’s he doing?

Mookie Betts at short earlier this season.

The Dodgers surprised many people in spring training when they announced that Mookie Betts would be their starting shortstop. This came after a poor spring at short by Gavin Lux , who was going to be the starter before he was shifted to second base to make room for Betts.

Betts was a Gold Glove winner in right field and played second base in 70 games last season. But to move to shortstop, the toughest defensive position to play (well, maybe catcher)? And doubters (including this newsletter) pointed out that Betts, listed at 5-9 and 180 pounds, could wear down during the season, hurting him offensively.

But here we are, 52 games into the season, and he has played short much better than many imagined and is hitting .330, making him a leading MVP candidate.

Betts had almost no professional experience at short, playing 13 games there in the minors in 2012, one in 2013 and 16 games at short for the Dodgers last season.

So how is he doing? Depends on whom you ask.

Betts, after Friday’s win over Cincinnati, in which he made an error: “I think it’s been … not very good, but it is what it is. It’s a work in progress. It’s my first time doing it in a long time. You have to start somewhere, and at least with me, feeling like I’m on the lower end, there’s nowhere to go but up from here.”

Dave Roberts : “I think his defense has been fine. It’s probably never going to be to his standards, and that’s what makes him great. Taking this on, it’s not going to be linear. He’s his harshest critic, so I expect him to be frustrated. But I’m pleased with him.”

More from Betts, talking specifically about Friday’s throwing error that extended the inning for James Paxton : “Making errors really, really bothers me. Just have to be better than that. It doesn’t just affect me. It affects [James] Paxton, who has to throw more pitches. I just have to keep working.”

You get the sense that Betts could have played short flawlessly this season and still would find something to be critical of. That’s what makes some players great, the continual striving for perfection.

Betts certainly passes the eye test. Has he occasionally looked a bit awkward? Sure, but considering he’s learning the position on the fly while also batting leadoff, he is doing remarkably well. Anyone who wants to knock him at short needs to look at the big picture.

But how does he do, numbers-wise?

Fielding numbers aren’t as illuminating as hitting or pitching numbers, because it is an inexact science. Does one shortstop get a lot more assists because the pitching staff is filled with groundball pitchers or because he has more range? Does this player make more errors because he gets to more balls and has more chances for errors? I always go back to Yasiel Puig . He would get raves for his defense, because sometimes he would run half a mile, make a diving attempt and just miss the catch in foul territory. Standing ovation from the fans. However, Puig was actually out of position, not paying attention to the coaches. If he had been paying attention, he catches that same fly ball easily. No standing ovation. But the guy who pays attention and catches the ball easily doesn’t get noticed.

So, keeping in mind that fielding numbers aren’t perfect, let’s take a look at some, because they do shed some light on the matter.

There are 26 players who have started at least 30 games at short this season (Betts has started 41). Those are the players we will rank in all categories except of most errors. Here are the top five, and where Betts ranks (numbers courtesy of baseball-reference.com).

Most errors 1. Elly De La Cruz, Cincinnati, 10 1. Oneil Cruz, Pittsburgh, 9 3. Ha-Seong Kim, San Diego, 7 3. José Caballero, Tampa Bay, 7 3. Masyn Winn, St. Louis, 7 3. Paul DeJong, Chicago White Sox, 7 3. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 7

Fielding percentage 1. Ezequiel Tovar, Colorado, .995 2. Orlando Arcia, Atlanta, .989 3. Willy Adames, Milwaukee, .984 4. Carlos Correa, Minnesota, .982 5. Nick Ahmed, San Francisco, .981 23. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, .955

Fielding runs above average (The number of runs above average compared to others at his position. A league average fielder would have 0)

1. Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore, 6 2. Corey Seager, Texas, 5 2. Masyn Winn, St. Louis, 5 4. Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City, 4 5. Orlando Arcia, Atlanta, 3 5. Anthony Volpe, N.Y. Yankees, 3 T11. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 1

Defensive runs saved (Indicates how many runs a player saved or cost his team in the field compared to others at his position. The best fielders at each position usually have at least 15 at the end of the year.)

1. Masyn Winn, St. Louis, 7 1. Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City, 7 3. Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore, 5 4. Anthony Volpe, N.Y. Yankees, 4 4. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 4 4. Brayan Rocchio, Cleveland, 4

Range factor per nine innings (How many balls a player gets to per nine innings)

1. Nick Ahmed, San Francisco, 4.59 2. Ezequiel Tovar, Colorado, 4.55 3. Masyn Winn, St. Louis, 4.47 4. Jeremy Peña, Houston, 4.45 5. Javy Báez, Detroit, 4.22 12. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 3.78

Most errors made while fielding the ball 1. Oneil Cruz, Pittsburgh, 7 2. José Caballero, Tampa Bay, 4 2. Nick Allen, Oakland, 4 4. Bobby Witt Jr., Kansas City, 4 4. Blaze Alexander, Arizona, 4 T26. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 1

Most errors made while throwing the ball 1. Elly De La Cruz, Cincinnati, 9 2. Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 6 3. Masyn Winn, St. Louis, 5 4. Paul DeJong, Chicago White Sox, 4 4. Tim Anderson, Miami, 4

Almost all of Betts’ errors have come on throws, including one during the third inning Wednesday, and while he grades out at the middle of the pack in the traditional fielding metrics (errors and fielding percentage), he is above average in the newer fielding stats. Considering everything, you have to say he is doing better than most expected on defense. I’m still not sure the Dodgers aren’t better off with Miguel Rojas at short and Betts at second, but you can’t criticize Betts, particularly when you consider the amount of work he has put in.

Offense is listless

The Dodgers’ offense has been listless for a little while now, like they think it’s the postseason. They still haven’t solved their problems in the bottom third of the lineup, which means that when a couple of players at the top of the lineup struggle, they don’t score runs. Andy Pages has stopped hitting, and he was the only one in the bottom third doing anything. Here’s a look at the Dodgers’ numbers the last two weeks:

Shohei Ohtani, .348/.412/.544, 3 doubles, 2 homers, 7 RBIs Chris Taylor, .333/.333/.333, 2 for 6 Mookie Betts, .277/.359/.489, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 homers, 2 RBIs Miguel Rojas, 3 for 11, 2 doubles, 1 RBI Gavin Lux, .256/.273/.395, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 5 RBIs Freddie Freeman, .239/.333/.413, 2 doubles, 2 homers, 8 RBIs Kiké Hernández, .222/.300/.444, 2 homers, 2 RBIs Will Smith, .205/.326/.359, 3 doubles, 1 homer, 6 RBIs Teoscar Hernández, .188/.250/.313, 1 double, 1 triple, 1 homer, 8 RBIs Jason Heyward, .143/.200/.357, 1 homer, 2 RBIs Miguel Vargas, 1 for 7, 1 double Andy Pages, .128/.180/.213, 1 double, 1 homer, 3 RBIs Austin Barnes, 1 for 8 James Outman, .059/.200/.118, 1 double Max Muncy, .046/.115/.046, 2 RBIs Team, .213/.281/.358, 18 doubles, 4 triples, 12 homers, 3.69 runs per game

The Dodgers are 7-6 in that time frame, thanks to some excellent pitching.

Bottom of the lineup

We’ll keep track of this throughout the season, because I have a feeling this is going to be crucial when the postseason comes around. Here are the best and worst team batting averages for the Nos. 7-9 spots in the batting order:

1. Milwaukee, .281/.344/.450 2. Angels, .273/.340/.435 3. N.Y. Mets, .266/.316/.393 4. Houston, .265/.308/.401 5. San Diego, .253/.308/.366

26. Miami, .203/.252/.317 27. Chicago White Sox, .202/.246/.315 28. Minnesota, .201/.275/.337 29. Dodgers, .190/.258/.295 30. Oakland, .184/.281/.323

The Dodgers have dropped seven places since we checked two weeks ago.

Let’s look at the Dodgers in the Nos. 7-9 spots individually:

No. 7 (mainly Outman and Pages): .190/.254/.256 No. 8 (mainly Lux, Taylor and Pages): .170/.243/.302 No. 9 (mainly Lux, Barnes and Rojas): .210/.280/.330

These names look familiar

We’re doing something a little different this season. Instead of looking only at players who were with the team last season, we will expand it to include notable players from the past. Click on the player’s name for a complete look. Numbers are through Wednesday.
