Presentations are an interesting way to introduce a new topic, perspective, or study to your audience. 10-minute presentations serve the same purpose but they come with a specified restriction on time.

When we see the word presentation, we instantly think of PPTs and while PPTs are used in many cases, some presentations are completely oral as well.

The number of speakers is another variable while presenting. It can be done individually like in the case of a job interview presentation or in a group setting like in the case of a college assignment. 

How long should a 10-minute presentation be?

Ideally, for 10-minute presentations, you should focus on adding 5-10 effective, crisp slides. And a speech of about 1000-2000 words should be enough to complete the presentation within 10 minutes.

However, there are no set rules while making a presentation which means that you are free to increase or decrease the number of slides in your presentation depending upon your pace of presenting.

Now when we talk about the pace of presenting, we mean the number of words you can speak in an understandable manner per minute. So, if you can speak 100-120 words per minute (adding the usual pauses), then a 1000–1200-word speech would be enough for your 10-minute presentation.

While we cannot point out an exact word count specifically catered for you in this blog, we can surely suggest you take up any piece of long article and go on reading it out loud while taking necessary pauses and timing it. It might give you an idea of your speed which in turn would help you gauge the perfect word count for your presentation.

Another factor that would define the way you present your topic is whether you are presenting it individually or in a group.

Individual Presentations

In Individual presentations, you are the one to shoulder your entire presentation’s responsibility. You can make use of effective PowerPoint presentation skills or use props to keep the audience engaged and interested in your presentation.

The reason is very simple, every individual has a very limited attention span and capacity to take in new information . 10-minute presentations exceed the average duration of attention span among humans which is 7 minutes.

If you bombard them with tons of information, chances are that they might feel exhausted and detached from your topic and presentation altogether.

2. Avoid reading from your slides

We know you might have heard this a gazillion times but here we are to say it again because it is very important. Avoid reading from your slides. As it might indicate your lack of understanding of the topic . It can also end up being a little boring for the audience to listen to something present in front of them that they can easily read themselves.

3. Give your audience an incentive to listen to you

It is always better to assume that your audience is not innately motivated to listen to your presentation and hence to give them a reason why listening to your presentation would be worth it.

Just like we structure any speech, with a beginning, a middle, and an end, structuring your presentation follows a similar pattern.

In the initial few minutes or even seconds of your presentation, the audience might have decided whether they should listen to your presentation or will it be more fruitful to dive deep into their thoughts.

This is the reason why starting 10-minute presentations on a strong foot is emphasized so much. But again, there is no need to stress out about it.

1. Provocative statements

The statement clearly goes against a belief we have grown up with; the idea that we should chase and focus on our goals in order to achieve them.

2. Hypothetical scenario

Starting with a hypothetical scenario includes the use of words like “Imagine” or “what if.” It gives your audience a chance to put themselves in a situation that you are about to address in your presentation.

Imagine you are going out for a drive with your friends. It is a little late and the roads are wet from the heavy shower that had surrendered only a few minutes ago. You are all singing and laughing. But then you look to your left only to realize two giant lights come close to you at lightning speed and you know at that moment you are going to die. That you are going to die in that crash. Then you hear a screech and *pause* the truck halts 5 cm from your car. That is exactly what someone with anxiety feels but unlike you, it doesn’t end within a few minutes; it persists for hours or even days.

3. Hard-hitting questions

While questions are one of the most widely used ways to open any speech or presentation, the task here is to open with a hard-hitting question.

A question that your audience probably doesn’t have an answer to, which you plan on providing them through your presentation.

Some examples of these would be:

• Is there anyone here who can give me the exact amount of microplastics they consumed during this week?
• Did you know that with the advancement in technology, there is a possibility that the organ transplanted to you in 20 years would not be from another human but from an animal?

Starting your presentation with props is the easiest and most creative way to start a presentation. The reason why it is creative is that you can use absolutely anything as a prop. Be it a plastic bottle, a jar full of waste, or even some hula hoops.

Once you have introduced yourself and your topic, you can go on to the next step: the main content of your presentation.

However, it isn’t just about presenting your points but how you present them that we will take a look into.  Presenting your topic in a more structured manner makes it easier for your audience to stay in tune with your presentation.

One of the formatting ways is the 3-pointer format . The idea behind using a 3-pointer structure is to divide your main content into 3 huge chunks or points. And while you are free to add more points, having 3 points makes it a tad bit easier to recall the information and to maintain a flow among the listeners.

1. Fitting remark

A fitting remark or in simple terms a summary is where you revise what you just spoke in a couple of lines. It is better to keep it as short as possible as 10-minute presentations don’t give you enough tie to elaborate.

2. Calling for action

You can end your speech by instilling a sense of action and purpose among the audience members to make a difference. An amazing example of this is the speech by Leonardo DiCaprio. While it is a speech, you can observe his way of delivering the last couple of lines and inculcate the same in your presentation.

I can not emphasize how absolutely wonderful the Presentation by Tim is. A mix of information with tons of humor coupled with very entertaining visuals.

His confidence makes the presentation quite engaging and interesting to watch.

2. Adam Grant

Adam Grant like Tim Burton has made use of animated cartoons to make the statistical data quite entertaining. However, the way he presents his topic is a little different.

His presentation is filled with images and cartoons . When he states quantitative data, the font size and color are something that must be taken a look into. Further, the language that he includes in his PPT is very candid and informal.

Stories are a very binding way to let your point across. It adds a personal touch, especially if you are sharing your personal experience. It also gives the audience a chance to understand where you come from and maybe even relate to you.

The TED by Jarret J. Krosoczka is a wonderful presentation where he illustrates his story while talking about it to the audience.

3. Engage the audience.

While it isn’t mandatory for you to add elements that would ensure that the audience stays engaged, adding it will only help in enhancing your and your audience’s experience (if time permits).

You can add a quiz , or a small game like spot a difference between the two pictures. you can also ask a question and take a poll by asking the audience members who agree to raise their hands.

4. Add humor to your presentations

Humor can be your friend or your enemy while presenting a topic. If you get it right, it can make your presentation an unforgettable one. At the same time, if you end up making jokes that the audience might not find funny or worst even derogatory, It may land you in some trouble.

One of the funniest and most energy-filled presentations I have come across was the one by Alexis Nikole Nelson and her take on Veganism. The way in which she makes use of the prop is another thing you must take a look into.

Add elements of credibility

Elements of credibility include stating facts and figures . You can also quote some renowned personalities . All these things would build the confidence of the audience in your presentation. It also works best to give a reality check. How do you ask?

Presentation on Sustainable Fashion

I want you to imagine the amount of water you drink in a day. Now imagine and tell me if you can do the math, how much water would you have consumed in 3 years?

Now how would you feel if I tell you that this also equal to the amount of water that went into making the t-shirt you quite stunningly adorn right now?

With a 4-fold increase in the production of clothes over the last 20 years, we cannot even imagine the extent to which it has penetrated the pollution index across the world. Every year, fast fashion brands release several micro collections against the ideal 2. So if you ever wondered how the store has a very different collection every time you step into H&M or Zara, you know now. In fact, In the US per person, approximately 35 kgs of textile waste are generated every year.

If this wasn’t enough, the extent of water pollution caused by Fast fashion is beyond imaginable. 22,000 toxic waste is released into rivers by tanneries in Bangladesh,

Every. Single. Day.

So, what is the most immediate action that you can take to switch to more sustainable styling?

I am going to introduce a mantra that has worked wonders for me when I felt overwhelmed about switching to sustainable fashion. The 4 Rs and No it isn’t Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The 4 Rs for sustainable fashion are

Reduce your consumption of clothes. Has it ever happened that you end up buying a shirt only to realize you don’t a perfect pair of pants to wear with it? Or bought something that you found super cute but never touched once you got home? It’s okay! Don’t feel guilty, I have done that too.

But that can be avoided. A simple method is to ask yourself “Do I need this Now?” and “Will I be able to use it in the long run?” The answer to the second question will immediately direct you away from fast fashion brands that offer cheap quality clothing at a very affordable rate.

If the clothes you own can be repaired in any way, it is better to do that than jump on to buy a new one. There were many times when I repaired or redesigned my outfits. For example. this one time when I slipped in my yard and tore my jeans a little from the knee area. Guess the ground was desperate for me to own another pair of ripped jeans and so I did exactly that. The other time a friend of mine, an amazing artist got some splashes of paint on her pants, Any guess what we did with those pants?

Exactly! Splashed more paint over it. Now I know it may sound bizarre but that was a time when that was in trend.

The third option is to Resell your stuff or give it to someone else.

This is where our popular thrift stores come into the picture. You’ve got a piece of clothing that you are never going to wear? Why let it take up the space in your closet when you can easily make money out of it and get rid of it at the same time. But if you are more altruistic, you can even consider donating your not-so-frequently used clothes to those who need them. And I know for a fact that every brown person sitting here is a pro at both lending and receiving hand-me-downs.

Lastly and the most important of all is, to rethink your consumption of fashion. It is 2022. Some brands have dedicated their entire efforts to providing you with sustainable alternatives. You can choose to buy consciously.

For instance, Adidas’s future craft loop edition shoes are one such example of big brands trying to do their part in this battle of saving our planet from our species. Further, there are brands like Baggit that use vegan leather for all their products.

Then there are completely sustainable brands like Eco India that use the clothes thrown into landfills to make fashion statements that are both iconic as well as sustainable.

While I can talk about this for as long as my voice doesn’t give in, I guess I should cut it short.

Reduce, Repair, Resell and Rethink what you can do to make the change towards a healthier fashion choice. After all the industry thrives upon you and your impulsiveness, try not to give in to it.

So the idea is simple. Maintain your style but not at the cost of the planet.

Unfortunately, that question doesn't have a simple answer. But in this guide, I'll help you to work out how many slides you need for presentations of different lengths . I'll also include some tips to help you with presentation timing and delivery.

How Many Slides for a 5-Minute Presentation?

Let's start with the answer to a common question: how many slides for a 5-minute presentation? 

While 5-minute presentations may not be the norm (let's face it, that's a pretty short presentation slot), sometimes that's all the time you've got. Typically, you might do a 5-minute presentation at a weekly stand-up or similar meeting. 

Can a Presentation Be Too Short? 

If your presentation lasts less than ten minutes, then it is considered a short presentation. It isn't bad to have a short presentation as long as you're able to deliver the message you're supposed to correctly.

But if you’re unable to deliver your message, then your presentation is too short.

For short presentations, it's best to limit the number of slides. In fact, you probably won't want more than 10 slides. And you could get away with fewer.

Here are five tips to make an effective short presentation:

Only put essential information in your presentation. This means that any unnecessary information should be left out. This means that your slides should be brief and concise.

Context is important, so just because you are taking out unnecessary information doesn’t mean that you should leave out context. You want everyone to be able to understand what you are talking about.

3. Series of Three

Try using the series of three. This helps people remember your topic better. You do this by breaking your topic into three main ideas. This makes your presentation more concise.

4. Use Stories

People relate to stories more than facts. So, try to use stories to get your main point across in a relatable or entertaining way.

5. Bare Minimum

You should keep your presentation minimal. They should look good but also not have a ton of information on them.

For example, if you’re wondering how many slides are in a 5-minute presentation, The answer is you should have only five slides. That’s about one minute per slide. The general rule is 1-2 minutes per slide.

So, if a 5-minute presentation is short and sweet, how many slides do you need for a 10-minute presentation? There are a couple of answers to this question. 

One option is to keep the number of slides similar (no more than 10) and spend longer discussing key points. 

But another option is to have more slides, ideally no more than 20. Then decide how much time you want to spend on each slide. As before, it's good practice to stick to one main point per slide.

As you start to increase the length of your presentation, the issue of the number of slides becomes less important. So, when thinking about how many slides for a 15-minute presentation, you can include more slides. You could perhaps use as many as 30. 

But you don't have to. You can also stick with a smaller number of slides and spend more time talking about key points . In other words, adjust the verbal part of your presentation without changing much else. 

If you do decide to go for more slides, you can move beyond the bare-bones approach. That means besides having slides for your main talking points, you can include slides for supporting points, too.

Once your presentation starts getting a bit longer, the question of how many slides you need for a 20-minute presentation gets more complex. Guy Kawasaki believes the ideal presentation has 10 slides, lasts 20 minutes, and has no font smaller than 30 points. That's his 10/20/30 rule.

Here are some tips for a 20-minute presentation:

1. Go Longer

With 20 minutes, you can go longer. Some recommend 20 slides for a 20-minute presentation, with an allocation of a minute of speaking time per slide. 

2. Spend Time on Slides

But it's not always necessary to have a set time per slide . Just spend more time on the slides where you've got more to say. With longer presentations, include a brief introduction and conclusion to make your presentation even more polished. 

3. Use Charts and Graphs

A 5-minute presentation can have a pretty simple design. As presentations get longer, it's important to think about ways to hold your audience's attention. This is a good time to illustrate key points with graphics, photos, charts, and graphs. They'll give your audience images they'll remember long after you end your presentation.

The same principles apply when considering how many slides for a 30-minute presentation. If you used 30 slides for a 15-minute presentation, you'll likely feel more comfortable with more slides for a longer presentation slot. In that case, add more slides for sub-points.

Once your presentation slot gets longer, you'll probably want to have a LOT more slides. When planning how many PowerPoint slides for a 45-minute presentation, it's unlikely that you're going to stop at 10 or 15 slides.

As always, well-designed slides will help hold your audience's attention.

So, what about the number of slides for a 1-hour presentation? This is a pretty long presentation slot. There's a good chance your audience's attention will wander. Here are some tips for longer presentations:

1. Make a Choice

As advised for presentations 20 minutes and above, you've got the choice to add more slides for supplementary points. Or you can speak much longer about the key points. And you'll need to keep slide design appealing to give your audience something to focus on.

2. Make it Interactive

There's another option, though. Even if you've got a 1-hour presentation slot, you don't have to fill the whole thing with your own voice. Instead, make it interactive by getting the audience involved throughout. You can also leave plenty of time for a Q&A session at the end. 

3. Plan a Break

An hour can be a long time to sit and listen to a person speak. If you're working on a longer presentation, scheduling a break not only gives your audience a chance to stretch and move around. It also gives you a fresh chance to capture their attention when they come back.

Another question people often ask is how many PowerPoint presentation slides per minute you should have for a typical presentation. Again, this question doesn't have a simple answer. 

The number of slides you need per minute may depend on your topic. If it's simple, a few slides might do, while a more complex topic might need more slides. 

Another factor is your speaking rate. The average person speaks at 150 words per minute . If you speak faster than that, you'll cover more slides in a minute than someone who speaks more slowly.

Match your slides to your material. Even long presentations can hold attention if the topic is interesting enough.

For example,  focus on what your audience needs . Choose the presentation length that's right for your subject and the occasion. Here are a couple of examples:

An executive presentation is usually short and focused. So, you'll get straight to the point and may only need a few slides.

In contrast, a keynote speech or lecture is usually longer. Spend more time painting a picture or telling a story. 

Use templates to give your presentations a harmonious and attractive look without having to do the design work yourself. Human beings are very visual. Attractive slides will subtly enhance the appeal of your presentation. 

When designing your slides, avoid walls of text , which are a real turnoff.  Keep your slides uncluttered. It'll be easier for the audience to focus on them.

The 10-minute presentation

Ten minutes is more than enough time in which to give a compelling and effective presentation.

A lot of detailed information can be presented in ten minutes without the presentation dragging on and losing the audience’s attention. Structuring the presentation correctly is still vitally important. No one likes to be waffled at.

A basic four-section structure for your 10-minute presentation could be something like this:

1. Introduction. Tell the audience a little about yourself, briefly, and perhaps include a slide with your name and job title on as you do so.

It is also important to grab the audience’s attention during your introduction. Tell them an interesting story, or a joke, or quote some research with relevant findings.

2. With ten minutes to fill it is possible to make several main points, supported by slides or visual aids, and reinforced with details to form a compelling argument or overview of the subject matter.

Succinctly run through the points you intend to make, simplifying them to suit the audience and enable them to understand without difficulty. Trying to give too much information will overload and confuse the audience. Instead, cover a few main points well and thoroughly explain anything that might be hard to understand.

3. Use the ‘rule of three’ to explain your points. This is a memorable structure for delivering information in blocks of three items. For example, you might consider illustrating your presentation with three case studies from the real world, or three practical examples of your argument in action.

4. Finish with something that suitably rounds off your presentation. Due to the recency effect, the end of your presentation is likely to be one of the most memorable parts for most people in the audience. Make it count with a sales call-to-action, or details of a future opportunity, a web address for further contact, or even just a final summary of your points.

Don’t try to learn your presentation word-for-word

A lot of words can be said in ten minutes. Learning the entire presentation off by heart is difficult and time consuming. Instead, aim to learn the outline and key facts of each point you wish to make, and work out cues to remind yourself when to change slides.

Write out reminders on cue cards to prompt your memory, but don’t try to read your presentation entirely from paper. With practice, it will become easier to speak continuously for ten minutes without having to refer to your cue cards too often. The presentation will also flow far more smoothly.

Try to tell a story

Ten minutes can seem like a long time, and it is easy to lose the thread of your presentation. To avoid this, try to imagine your presentation as a story. All stories have a beginning, middle and end, and this can be used to keep your presentation coherent and focused. What story are you trying to tell the audience? Try to remember this if you start to go off-topic during the presentation.

Focus on the whole audience

It is often tempting to pick out an individual member of the audience and give the presentation as if you were speaking only to him or her. This can be effective over a short time, but over ten minutes, it would be hard to maintain. Instead, spread your eye contact across the whole audience, looking at different people periodically. No one likes to be stared at, but making eye contact is important.

Our typical answer to the latter question is to create 10-20 slides. It’s up to you to choose the exact number. However, note that each person, on average, speaks 120 to 160 words per minute. So, you have enough time to use 1200 to 1600 words in a 10-minute presentation.

When you determine the time you spend on each slide, you can decide on the exact number of slides for your 10-minutes presentation. However, choose 20 slides if only you can finish each one in 30 seconds. Remember that every word counts, so pick them carefully to support the main idea of your presentation.

While thinking of how many slides you need for a 10-minute presentation, you should also decide on the perfect font size. The correct size for fonts makes your slides perceptible and not troublesome. You’ve spent months on your research, but have only 10 minutes to present it to the world. Yikes! But, fear not! There are some easy, practical ways to make it memorable.

In a striking back-to-back comparison showcased in the video below, I give a standard 10-minute research talk riddled with features that characterize too many dry scientific presentations. You’ll nod your head as you recognize them from your own and colleagues’ past efforts. Then watch, as I transform the same material in a subsequent presentation that showcases the potential of strong science communication to bring research alive with a little preparation. And no, we’re not talking about animating your slide deck. This is about the power of words to truly communicate research.

RESEARCH TOOLBOX; 10 Tips for a Dynamic 10-Minute Conference Presentation from UBC Nursing .

My top 10 tips are:

• Aside from the “I have nothing to disclose” statement, don’t start by thanking by name all the people on your first slide (your co-authors). Instead, say good morning or good afternoon, whichever is relevant, then start your presentation with a bit of dramatic statement – either the scope of the issue, something people don’t normally think of, something that sounds contrary to what people normally believe but hints at your results, or at least makes it clear why this research was needed. It’s a way of being compelling and catching attention, it projects confidence and draws people in. Not humour, though, that’s hard to pull off.
• The slides should illustrate your presentation points, not be your presentation. They should have no more than 3-4 points per slide, in phrases, not sentences, and no more than two lines per point (preferably one). Use bar charts or graphs or pictures where you can, with limited words.
• Don’t read the slides, make the points with slightly different words, and expand on them a bit.
• Speak slowly, way, way slower than you think you need to – we will always talk faster during a public speaking situation, so it’s important to speak slowly and clearly, especially since there will be people who have English as a second language in the audience, and are likely jet-lagged. Most of us speak at 120 words a minute, so that means, for a 10 minute presentation 1200 words max. Write out your script so that you have exactly those many words—the minute you digress, you run over time.
• Don’t be afraid to make a short statement with a bar chart or table on the slide, like “As you can see from this table, Southeast Asian girls reported poorer mental health than boys,” and then fall silent for a bit, letting people absorb the info before you switch to the next slide (this can heighten the drama/attention, and makes you look very polished and confident–even if you’re counting in your head how long to wait before you switch the slide and speak again!).
• Never, ever say, “okay, I know you can’t read this, but…” If it’s unreadable, too many lines, too small font, or too busy a table or figure, do not include it . Come up with a different way to convey the key points, because the minute you apologize for your slide, you’ve lost them.
• Avoid swooping transitions, nifty animations, cutesy cartoon graphics, and wild shifts of colour or font; anything that might make your audience seasick or dizzy won’t win you respect or attention.
• Remember to put in the “so what?” conclusion, or a concrete couple of clinical implications–or go back to your dramatic opening statement and bring it into the ending. If you’ve paced yourself with your 1200 words or fewer, you’ll have time to give the final punchline of what we should do now, or what we know now, because of this work.
• Say thank you! But don’t say, “I’d like to thank my supervisor, my committee, my colleagues, my family, my carpool, my dog…” and don’t mention the funding source, even if it’s listed on your last slide as an acknowledgment. Leave it for people to read during questions.
• Wear something bright red–a scarf, a tie, a blouse, a pocket handkerchief, a jacket, a dress; it draws the eye, enhances their alertness, and will help people find you afterwards to tell you what a fabulous job you did on your presentation, and what they liked about your study, or ask another question about it.

Tips for a 10-minute presentation

Prioritise.   Select.  In a 10-minute talk, you can hope to convey one key idea.  So:  what’s your ‘take-away message’?

Think of a 10-minute talk as an extended abstract:  your aim is to convey the unique character of your research, with just enough detail so that the audience can grasp the big picture and understand what distinguishes your research from other related work. 

Plan the time:

If the talk is 10 minutes, then you can’t spend 5 of them on the introduction.  Associate time with important points – points essential to convey the character and shape of your research, points important to your line of reasoning, points concerning the implications of your research, and so on.  

It is essential to cover enough of the design and structure of your research for the audience to grasp its character.  So, your talk should include the classic key ingredients:

1.  Research question :  including what motivates you to address it, and why an answer will be important.  

2.  Context :   what is already known, what the issues are, what other approaches have been tried or are being tried – in brief.

3.  Your research design :   what you’re doing, what evidence you expect to find.

4.  Findings:    what evidence you have produced so far.

5.  Take-away message:   what you want the audience to remember about your research.

You’ll need balance among these elements:  don’t sacrifice the evidence, or your take-away message won’t be convincing.  Don’t short-change the context, or the research choices may not make sense.  Don’t forget to motivate the question, or the audience might wonder why you’re bothering.  And so on.

Start by giving a minute to each of the five – and then allocating the remaining five minutes to the elements that are most important to you to convey.  Note the time allocation on your running notes or script (whatever you use to guide yourself during your talk).

Plan the slides:

At 1 slide per minute, you need to contain your key points in 10 slides or so.  That doesn’t mean squeezing the material from 20 slides into 10; it means selecting key points and crucial material.  Remember:  if the audience is too busy trying to read your slides, then people won’t be listening to your words.  The purpose of the slides is to focus attention and reinforce key points.  If you have important supporting material (e.g., data, analyses) that won’t fit into the talk, keep them to hand in case they’ll help you answer questions.

Don’t just guess.  Make sure you’ve timed yourself giving the talk in a normal delivery pace at least once.  For example, give the talk to some friends or colleagues, and time it.

How to produce the best presentation in the shortest time possible: 10-step guide

Have you ever been asked to give a presentation and had no idea where to start?  It’s easy to waste a lot of time and effort when creating a PowerPoint presentation.  Common mistakes include producing far too much content only to cut half of it out later, making your slides too text heavy rather than visual, and losing sight of your key message amongst the waffle!  

Follow our 10-step guide to building a killer presentation in the shortest time possible:

• Start by getting crystal clear on your presentation purpose

What is the outcome you want from this talk?  What is the best possible reaction or feedback you could get from the audience?  Start with this and write it down on paper.

• Find out who’s attending

Ask the event organiser for details of the audience.  What are their job titles?  How much do they know about the topic?  Most importantly, what do they want to get out of your talk?

• Clarify your core message

Now that you’re clear on your presentation’s purpose and audience, what is the key message you want to leave your audience with?  Hint: you should be able to say this in 15 words or less, and it should be clear enough for your audience to be able to repeat at the end of your presentation.

• Begin creating your content.

The basic outline of your presentation should look like this:

(i) Tell the audience what you’re going to tell them

(ii) Tell them it

(iii) Tell them what you told them

And the expanded version might look like this:

‍ Opening - Could open with a startling question / statement / story to grab attention…

‍ Introduction - Good morning, my name is X and today I’m going to tell you X….

‍ Body - ‍ Point 1 – Support material (Story? Facts?) Point 2 – Support material (Story? Facts?) Point 3 – Support material (Story? Facts?)

‍ Conclusion - To summarise, today I have told you about X….

‍ Call to action - If you’d like to know more, you can contact me at X…

‍ Close - Thank you for listening. I’ll hand you back over to X…

• Calculate how many slides should be in your presentation

The recommended slide use is to speak for 2 minutes per slide, so if you’re giving a 20 minute presentation, aim for around 10 slides.  Open up PowerPoint and insert the right number of slides before you begin writing so you can see how big the canvas is.

• Populate your PowerPoint slides, using a font size of no less than 30 pts

When you see how big this looks, it will help you to keep the text on your slides to an absolute minimum!  Use simple language and steer clear of jargon.  You can use the ‘notes’ section underneath the slide for more extensive notes to help you talk around the slide content.

• Now swap some of the text for visual content to bring your presentation to life

This could be photos, videos, infographics, graphs… anything that presents the information in a visually stimulating way.  Believe it or not, our brains process imagery 60,000 times faster than text!

• Incorporate stories, metaphors and anecdotes

Did you know we are 22 times more likely to remember a story than a fact?  This is because stories engage the emotional part of our brains.  If you want to make a point no one will forget, link it to a story or a metaphor.  For example, I once saw a conference speaker open their presentation like this:

“The early bird gets the worm or the second mouse gets the cheese.  Which one of these is true when it comes to business?”

• Add in questions.. or at least rhetorical questions

Some audience interaction is a great way to wake people up, especially at the beginning of your presentation.  You could ask a poignant question that leads you onto your next slide, or ask for a raise of hands, for example “Does anyone here want to guess what % of people in the UK give money to charity?”  “Raise your hands if you’ve spent more than 20 minutes on Facebook today!”

• Practise, practise, practise

Do a dry run with friends, or video record yourself giving the presentation to familiarise yourself with the content and practise the flow.  The earlier you do this in the process or building your slides, the more time you will save.  Always leave tidying up your slides until the last stage, as the content of your presentation will evolve as you practise it in real time.

The final word?  Make sure your PowerPoint slide show supports your talk, not the other way around.  Be careful not to just read your slides out.  Keep the audience focused on you rather than your PowerPoint by presenting with flair and enthusiasm.

In a typical 10-slide setup, you’ll have around 8 slides for your key points, considering that the first and last are usually extra slides reserved for an introduction and conclusion. This approach helps you organize your content clearly and ensures that each slide effectively conveys a single, focused message.

How Many Minutes Per Slide?

Generally, aim to spend between 0.5 to 2 minutes on each slide. The 10/20/30 rule by Guy Kawasaki suggests a maximum of 2 minutes per slide, but consider these points and adjust based on these factors:

• These usually require less time as they indicate topic changes.
• Allow extra time for questions and discussions with the audience.

Talking Speed: How Fast Should I Speak?

Concerned about how fast you should speak during your presentation? The thing is, we all talk (and present) at different speeds in different settings. Your talking speed is connected to the total length of the presentation, the number of slides, and the complexity of the content. Whether it’s an in-person or virtual presentation might also affect your talking speed.

For presentations, use a moderate talking speed of around 100 to 150 wpm (words per minute) so your audience can easily follow and absorb your message.

These factors also affect your talking speed:

🗣️ Your natural pace: Stay close to your regular speaking rate for comfort and authenticity.

🗣️ Language fluency: If you or your audience are not native speakers, a slower pace can aid understanding.

🗣️ Audience’s background: Adapt to the audience’s level of knowledge in the presentation’s subject matter and their language comprehension.

🗣️ Presentation style: A conversational style might be slower, while a scripted talk could be faster.

Be mindful that speeds over 150 wpm can be challenging for some, particularly for non-native speakers.

How to Time a Powerpoint Presentation?

There are two ways to time your PowerPoint slides: auto-advancing slides or rehearsing within PowerPoint for pre-recorded timings. Note: These features are exclusively available to PowerPoint users (not Google Slides).

Method #1: Use Transitions to Advance Slides Automatically

• On the ‘Transitions’ tab, look for ‘Timing’ > ‘Advance Slide’.
• Check the box for ‘Advance Slide After…’.
• Type in the duration you prefer. For example, you can set your slides to switch to the next one after 30 seconds.
• The timer starts when the last animation or effects on the current slide finishes.
• To have more control during your presentation, you can select both ‘On Mouse Click’ and specify a timing on ‘After..’. This allows you to use a mouse click to advance the slide before the timer is up or let the slides advance after the timing ends.

Method 2: Rehearse and Time Your Slides

Rehearse Timings is a powerful feature alongside Speaker Coach. You’ll rehearse your slides and record how much time you take for each slide. PowerPoint can use the recorded timings to advance your slides automatically during your presentation.

• Select ‘Slide Show’ > ‘Rehearse Timings’. 
• You’ll enter presentation mode, a recording toolbar will appear, and the timer will start.
• As you rehearse, click ‘Next’ to go to the next slide.
• Click ‘Pause’ to temporarily stop recording the time. Select ‘ Resume recording’ to restart the timer.
• If you want to reset the timer on a particular slide, click ‘Repeat’ > ‘Resume recording’.
• Press’ Esc’ on your keyboard to stop recording and exit presentation mode.
• On the last slide, select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ if you want to keep the recorded timings for the slides.
• To see the timings for each slide (from the rehearsal), go to ‘View’> ‘Slide Sorter’.
• With the recorded timings, you can let it auto-advance slides at your next presentation. If you prefer to avoid having your ppt slides advance automatically based on these timings, go to ‘Slide Show’> unselect ‘Use Timings’.

The Only 10 Slides You Need in Your Pitch

I am evangelizing the 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint. It’s quite simple: a pitch should have ten slides , last no more than twenty minutes , and contain no font smaller than thirty points . This rule is applicable for any presentation to reach an agreement: for example, raising capital, making a sale, forming a partnership, etc.

• Ten slides. Ten is the optimal number of slides in a PowerPoint presentation because a normal human being cannot comprehend more than ten concepts in a meeting—and venture capitalists are very normal. (The only difference between you and venture capitalist is that he is getting paid to gamble with someone else’s money). If you must use more than ten slides to explain your business, you probably don’t have a business.
• Twenty minutes . You should give your ten slides in twenty minutes. Sure, you have an hour time slot, but you’re using a Windows laptop, so it will take forty minutes to make it work with the projector. Even if the setup goes perfectly, people will arrive late and have to leave early. In a perfect world, you give your pitch in twenty minutes, and you have forty minutes left for discussion.
• Thirty-point font . The majority of the presentations that I see have text in a ten-point font. As much text as possible is jammed into the slide, and then the presenter reads it. However, as soon as the audience figures out that you’re reading the text, it reads ahead of you because it can read faster than you can speak. The result is that you and the audience are out of synch.

I love this article. However, this comment ( his comment ) is unnecessary and distracting – it could have been eliminated and the article would be even stronger. I’ve been burned enough times with projectors and Apple computers that I rigorously avoid them – a personal choice. Yet, I wouldn’t have injected my bias about Apple into this article if I was wrote it. In ‘ The Art of the Keynote Guy says ‘ Don’t denigrate the competition ‘ – good advice. Apparently Microsoft is the competition. He should follow his own counsel.

And the reality is it’s true you wouldn’t spend 40 minutes trying to get it to work with an apple. You’d realize immediately you don’t have the right adapter that’d be that.

Peggy is this a joke? The author is referring to a sales pitch. There’s no such thing as a “sales pinch.” He’s not referencing your phrase.

Only one slide is missing… Defensibility & IP. Every good pitch has some sort of moat. Trade secrets, patents, exclusivity agreements, etc. Investors want to have some sort of competitive advantage and protections.

Same goes for sales pitches.

Dave – Not really. The underlying magic is your “model”; what are you doing differently to address the need in the market?

As an investor, you want exclusivity in the market to that magical way of addressing the need. That means you have a legal way to defend the IP (e.g. patents, copyrights, etc.). With those elements your execution in fulfilling the need becomes less important, and thereby reduces investor risk, because in the end we can then license the IP to someone who can.

How would someone protect a big idea let’s say as example the idea of Facebook. A network idea. A big idea, but one that could be grabbed and replicated. How do you protect “the idea” even from those angel investors you are pitching to? Do you ask investors to sign anything before you pitch? I am stuck at this very fundamental starting point.

I agree. This is where I am stuck. My business model and idea are based around a network sales concept and exclusive market niche (a huge niche). How do I protect that? Do I need to protect this idea, even from presenting to investors? How do you protect a network concept, for instance how would you have protected the idea of Facebook going in to present the concept to investors? Is stealth, speed of execution, launch and quick scaling the only ways?

I would add use of pictures and graphs along with text in the presentation. Pictures catch great deal attention and they communicate well. I would also add presenter’s voice pitch and connecting with audience while presenting.

Guy’s 10 slides are clearly structured as a pitch presentation format for investors. Having now been on both sides of the table, I can confidently say they are an effective template / discipline for getting your story focused on the essential check list of questions that investors will have, for keeping their attention, and for whetting their appetites to want to learn more .. and potentially attracting a champion in the process. With a strong leader taking command of the presentation, these guidelines work well for improving your batting average attracting $. As Mark Twain said, “If I had more time I’d have made it shorter”. If that was ever more true, it’s with investors who are barraged daily with deals.

Love the 10/20/30 philosophy and am rewriting an article => video to follow. Some of the comments make me a bit concerned though.

Funny thing is, I am using Canva for a project presentation in a Strategic Sales class and this was the first useful article I found to help me get a start on it.

I can agree with this as someone who make many pitch decks. I like the idea of 10, but it is not feasible as there is no consumer insight, media quotes, simple marketing plan, etc. Yes. there should be 10 topics, but that does not mean 10 slides as some topics do take multiple slides, even if just a media coverage quote on a slide to introduce a topic.

I really like the book The art of start 2.0. He explains in simple words and its easy to understand. I recommend the book!

I agree with Guy’s thoughts. In addition: Make up a deck. Show it to a friend. Then 2 days later ask them what it said. Tweak the deck so that the viewer is left with 3 or 4 most important bullets. These should be very much akin to the notions in the Elevator Pitch.

I don’t make a big deal about the CFO and never use “R&D” in the pitch. VC’s early on dictate who the CFO is, and one VC told me years ago that “research is done in universities, not with my money”

Limit of 10 slides enforces you to be concise, to see and display a core of the project. And it is critical to be understandable for audience. When you don’t spend additional time of investors, they see that you respect them. So they will respect you.

The investor and his/her venture capitalist is plausibly expert to capture the subject.

Before you settle on a topic, please don't overlook demonstrating a skill or a process you regard as commonplace.

If we already know how to do something competently, we have an understandable tendency to dismiss whatever it is as far too simple, and too ordinary to turn it into a demonstration speech.

And yet, that assumption can be so wrong.

There are audiences who will want to know how to do some of the things we do so efficiently and easily, that we forget we had to learn how to do them in the first place!  Many of those things are on this list.

For instance, a group of people who don’t spend a lot of time online, could find why and how to set up a safe password valuable knowledge to have. It might stop them from being hacked!

Likewise teaching people who intend to explore the great outdoors, and haven't had much prior experience, how to use a portable gas stove safely is extremely useful.

How to Pitch Your Ideas in 10 Minutes or Less

Use these three strategies to quickly grab your audience's attention..

There's something magical about 10 minutes, and smart entrepreneurs know it.

John Medina, a molecular biologist at the University of Washington, says we have a built-in clock that causes us to tune out of a pitch , presentation, or lecture after 10 minutes . Fortunately, there are proven ways to make the most of that time.

As a communication coach , I know this 10-minute rule is true. For example, Richard Branson used to hold pitch competitions at his home on Necker Island. Each entrepreneur was given 10 minutes to pitch their idea. Branson told me that if you can't get the idea across in 10 minutes, it's too complicated.

Similarly, two years ago, military instructors teaching advanced tactics in nuclear weapons proliferation asked me to speak to their class at an airbase in New Mexico. The class had been assigned one of my public speaking books to help them communicate concisely. 

One instructor told me, "These officers will be sent to the Pentagon and other parts of the world after this class. They will be asked to share their analysis of a situation at a moment's notice with senior leaders. And they'll get 10 minutes to do it -- if they're lucky."

So whether you're pitching to a celebrity entrepreneur, sharing key ideas to leaders, or on a call with a potential investor, here's how to make the most of the 10 minutes you have by answering three questions. 

1. What's the idea?

Journalists often say "don't bury the lead." A pitch or informational presentation isn't a novel where your audience has the patience to wait until the end to find out what happens.

Michael Moritz, an early investor in Google, once told me that Sergey Brin and Larry Page explained their idea in one sentence. "Google organizes the world's information and makes it universally accessible." In one sentence, Moritz was hooked.

The same strategy works for an informational presentation. If you're meeting to discuss the new budget, start with a headline:

"Hi, everyone. You'll be happy to know that, thanks to our team's great work, we've been approved for a budget increase of 10 percent over last year."

In one sentence, you've got their attention. Now you can answer the second question every person has on their mind.

2. What's in it for me?

I recently met with a senior manager at one of the world's largest tech companies. He said sales professionals are taught the 10-minute rule before pitching the company's services to potential customers -- but it's the first 60 seconds that really count.

A sales pitch might begin like this: "We ran the numbers. By adopting our service, you'll be saving your company millions of dollars, which your CEO will love to hear, and it'll cut the time you spend installing updates by 50 hours a month."

This powerful opening pitch accomplishes two things: It tells the listener that they'll look like a hero to the boss, and they'll get precious time back to spend on other activities. 

Sell the benefit of your idea as soon as possible.

3. Do you have a story or example?  

Few people will remember every detail on your slides, but they'll remember the stories you tell. Storytelling is an ancient rhetorical technique to transfer information. Today,  science is proving that it does, indeed, work like magic.

A CEO of a company that sells software once told me that its top sales staff were those who used a relevant customer story or case study in the first 10 minutes of their presentations. The sales data proved it -- good storytellers have a distinct advantage.

So the next time you're on deck to present in-person or on a Zoom call that's scheduled for 30 or 60 minutes, make no mistake, your audience will tune out after 10 minutes. They may remain on the call, but their attention will drop dramatically.

Your job in the first 10 minutes is to identify your big idea, sell the benefit, and tell a story. Your audience will love you for it.

How Many Slides to Use in a Presentation? 5 Tips

There’s nothing worse than a presentation that goes over time or poorly-designed slides that cram too much information onto the screen at once.

While there are a lot of things that can dictate how many slides to use in a presentation, key factors include how long you have to speak, what content you are presenting, and the visual nature of the content. (Some speakers don’t need slides at all to keep audiences engaged!)

Here, we’re breaking down common presentation times with a guide for how not to overload slides, and use them well—no matter what type of talk you are giving.

How Many Slides for a 5 Minute Presentation?

When it comes to short presentations, you probably want to keep the number of slides to a minimum. Think about the venue here in particular. How many people are you presenting for?

Often short presentations might be for a small group or on a small screen. That’s a major consideration when it comes to how many slides you need for a 5-minute presentation.

For most speakers that comes down to 5 to 10 slides, up to 2 per minute of speaking time .

• Design for screen size. If you’ll be presenting on a desktop or laptop screen, ensure that text is large enough to read for people standing or sitting a few feet away.
• Practice your timing. Five minutes might seem like a long time until you start talking.
• Put one point on each slide. (That’s probably all you’ll have time for.)
• Include a call to action at the end for the audience. This might include anything from an email address to answer a question or provide feedback to taking a survey or visiting a website.
• Don’t include a questions slide unless you will actually have time to take questions at the end of a short presentation.

How Many Slides for a 10 Minute Presentation?

With a 10-minute you have a little more flexibility in terms of slide count.

With more time, you can vary pacing and might have time to take questions at the end of the talk. (Your slide count will be less if you cut time from your presentation to answer questions.)

For a 10-minute presentation, you’ll probably end up creating 10 to 20 slides, but don’t feel like you have to move through two slides per minute. It really depends on the complexity of the information you are talking about.

Record your presentation as you run through it. Did you finish on time? And were you able to see each slide long enough to understand it during the natural flow of the presentation before moving on to the next one?

• Include plenty of white space for an organized, easy to read design.
• Use a mix of images and text to keep the visual flow moving.
• Use legible fonts that are consistent from slide to slide.
• If a slide looks cluttered, break the content into multiple slides.
• Don’t go crazy with bullets. The goal of each slide is to present an idea, not serve as notes for you.

How Many Slides for a 15 Minute Presentation?

There’s a fairly logical relationship between the time you have to present information and how complicated the content is. The number of slides you need for a 15-minute presentation might not be that much different than at 10 minutes.

That’s because what’s on each slide might need to sit with the audience a little longer. You need to leave a chart on the screen long enough for the audience to understand it. A photo, on the other hand, can flash up and go away quickly and still be understood.

Carefully consider your presentation topic and then use this recommendation as needed: Allow for 20-30 slides for a 15-minute presentation .

• Pick a theme for each slide: Image or text? Don’t expect the audience to “read” both on every slide.
• Use image based slides to connect a short text point (or no text at all) to an idea the audience can see.
• Use text-based slides without images for more complex information or to show bullet points, charts or numbers.
• You don’t have to have a new photo and image for each slide. Use the same image and change the text if you need to. Or don’t use an image at all. Nice typography is pretty awesome.
• Include more detailed information in the notes area for you as you are giving the presentation or to the audience to download and print later.

How Many Slides for a 30 Minute Presentation?

Once you get into the territory of longer presentations, you might want to use slides of varying types – some that are super quick and others that stay visible longer – to get different points across and fit the conversational flow.

This varying approach can be interesting for the audience but might require a little math and planning on your part to determine the exact right number of slides.

Start with this formula for a 30-minute presentation :

• 4 minutes: Amount of time for opening and closing (1 slide each)
• 2 minutes: Time for each point in your presentation (1 slide per point)
• 1 minute: Time for each sub-point in your presentation (1 slide per sub-point)
• 3 minutes: Deep dive for one or two key takeways (1-2 slides)
• Flash slide (quick on and off the screen): For transitions between large topic areas or polling the audience to keep them engaged

Now you can look at your content and do a few quick calculations to get a rough idea of how many slides you might need. For a 30-minute presentation with 5 points with two subpoints each and a takeaway, that’s in the neighborhood of 20 slides.

How Many Slides for a 45 Minute Presentation?

For longer presentations, pace and energy are key. Some presenters can go through an exceptional number of slides because of the way they speak.

Seasoned speakers, often giving a presentation that they’ve done a lot of times, can average 5 slides per minute. These are fast-paced quick hit images that really keep the audience thinking and engaged. It’s a fun style but can be difficult to pull off.

A more moderate estimate is 1 to 2 slides per minute at a varying pace. That’s what you commonly see in corporate presentations and talks. (The content is often complex as well.)

• Consider location with longer presentations. Will the slides be projected on a large screen? Design for that environment.
• Include mixed media clips if appropriate in longer presentations. Varying formats can keep the audience interested.
• Use a design theme for a consistent look and feel for the entire presentation.
• Don’t let slides sit on the screen for too long. Mix it up with a new photo even if the content theme hasn’t changed much. Once you set an expectation for the audience with visuals, you don’t want them to check out.
• Make the most of the top half of the slides. If you are in a big room, sometimes the lower portion is obscured for some audience members. Even if you need to use more slides to keep content toward the top, do it.

2024 Paris Olympics: USA Women's Basketball survives thriller vs. France to win eighth straight gold medal

The americans held off a valiant effort from the host country for a dramatic 61st consecutive olympic win.

The United States women's national basketball team completed its quest for an eighth consecutive gold medal in dramatic fashion on Sunday with a 67-66 win over the host country, France, at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This was the 61st consecutive win at the Olympics for Team USA, who has not lost on this stage since the semifinals in 1992.

Early on, it was clear France was going to dictate the terms of the game. Their length, athleticism and physicality on the defensive end had the Americans all out of sorts. Not only was Team USA turning the ball over on a regular basis, but they were rushing shots in the paint and struggling to finish around the basket. Early in the second half, France finally started to make some shots of their own, and they built a double-digit lead that appeared to have Team USA in real trouble. But like any true champion, the Americans had a response at the ready and ripped off a huge run to take the lead heading into the fourth.

Team USA was unable to keep up that momentum in the fourth quarter, however, and it became a back-and-forth game down the stretch. With less than 30 seconds to play, Gabby Williams hit a huge 3-pointer to pull France within one, and Kahleah Copper responded with two clutch free throws to push the Americans' lead back up to three. There was still time for one last French possession, however, and Williams made a shot at the buzzer, but her foot was on the line to make it a two-pointer.

A'ja Wilson, as she did all tournament long, led the way for Team USA. She bounced back from a tough start to finish with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Copper, who helped change the game in the second half, put up 12 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Kelsey Plum added 12 points and four assists.

Here are some key takeaways from the game:

Wilson delivers again

A'ja Wilson has firmly established herself as the best player in the world this summer, and she reminded everyone of that fact on Sunday. Though she got off to a frustrating start along with the rest of the team, she delivered a brilliant second-half performance to ensure Team USA went home with the gold. 

Wilson was everywhere on both ends of the floor during Team USA's big comeback in the third quarter, then added seven points in the fourth, including an incredible jumper that hit the top of the backboard before falling in. All told, Wilson finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

Over the entire tournament, Wilson averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.7 blocks on 59.2% shooting from the field. Among all players she was third in scoring, second in rebounding and fourth in blocks, while also recording the most double-doubles (four). 

Copper changes the game in the second half

Kahleah Copper received a DNP in the second group stage game and had only been on the court for 30 combined minutes over the first four games of this tournament. That trend continued in the first half on Sunday, as she played sparingly. 

But with Team USA down double digits in the third quarter, Cheryl Reeve put Copper back in the game hoping to find a spark. That's just what Copper provided with her energy on both sides of the ball. She pressured France's guards, got into the paint to create for herself and her teammates and crashed the glass. 

Late in the fourth quarter, as Team USA was trying to cling to a narrow advantage, Copper was their most consistent source of offense. She had eight of their final 14 points, including a layup with 1:19 to play and a pair of ice cold free throws in the final five seconds, which ended up sealing the win. 

Closest gold medal game ever

Since women's basketball was added to the Olympic program with the 1976 games in Montreal, most of the gold medal matches have been uncompetitive affairs due to the dominance of the Soviet Union and United States. Here's a look at the final scores of the previous 12 contests:

Heading into Sunday's final, there had been more gold medal games decided by 30-plus points (four) than decided by less than 20 (three), and only once (1988) was the margin single digits. Team USA's one-point win over France was by far the closest gold medal game in women's Olympic basketball history. 

Team USA wins gold in dramatic fashion

The United States women's national basketball team has done it again. For the eighth consecutive time, the Americans have won the Olympic gold medal. This time, it came in dramatic fashion with a one-point win over the host country, France, 67-66. This was the 61st consecutive win at the Olympics for Team USA. 

The French had a double-digit lead in the second half, but the Americans raced back at the end of the third quarter to take the lead into the fourth. From there, it was a back-and-forth affair that went down to the final buzzer. Team USA was up by three after a pair of clutch free throw by Kahleah Copper, but France had one last chance in the closing seconds. Gabby Williams made a shot at the buzzer, but her foot was on the line. 

A'ja Wilson led the Americans with 21 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, while Copper added 12 points, five rebounds and two steals in a game-changing second-half performance. 

Williams 19 points and seven rebounds in another strong performance for France, but it wasn't enough.

WOW. Kahleah Copper made both free throws to make it a three-point game, then France raced up the floor and Marine Johannes found Gabby Williams, who made a shot at the buzzer but had her foot on the line. Team USA escapes with a one-point win

Williams hits 3, Copper fouled

Wow, Gabby Williams with a huge 3 to cut the deficit down to one and keep France alive. Kahleah Copper fouled on the inbound and will head to the line with 3.8 seconds left.

France fouls Kelsey Plum on the inbounds to stop the clock and send her to the line. She's an 86% shooter from there, and will have two huge ones here to make it a two-possession game. Makes the first, makes the second

A little too agressive from the Americans there on defense, and they foul Marine Johannes with 13.5 seconds left. She makes both free throws and it's a two point game. 

Great defense by Team USA, Wilson goes 1-2 at the line

The Americans knew that France was looking for a 3-pointer and would not let them have a look. Breanna Stewart just came up with a huge defensive stop. Now Wilson at the line for two free throws, she makes one. Team USA up four with 17.4 seconds remaining.

Kahleah Copper has been huge in the second half today and just got to the rim to put the U.S. back up by three. Gabby Williams then airballed a three with less than a minute left. Team USA ball

Williams keeps showing up for France

Gabby Williams has been huge today for France, just as she has been all tournament. She just made two free throws, then drained a pull-up jumper to keep the French within one point as the clock nears the one-minute mark. She's up to 14 points today. 

Wilson's lucky bounce gives the U.S. a three-point lead

A'ja Wilson just had a free-throw line jumper go off the rim, then hit the top of the backboard before falling through the net to give Team USA a three-point lead with less than three minutes to play. Big swing there. 

All tied in the final five minutes

The Americans have not been able to continue the momentum they built late in the third quarter, and as we head into the final five minutes the score is tied at 51-51, and this is anyone's game. If either squad can execute a few times offensively down the stretch, they will win. 

Third quarter: Team USA 45 -- France 43

France started the third quarter in impreccable fashion and built a 10-point lead that had Team USA in serious trouble. Kahleah Copper and Sabrina Ionescu then checked in and helped change the game along with A'ja Wilson, who scored eight points in the frame. A pair of free throws from Wilson in the final seconds capped a complete turnaround for the Americans, who now take a two-point lead into the fourth. 

France surges ahead

France has started the second half on an 8-0 run to take an eight-point lead, their largest of the game, and force a timeout from Cheryl Reeve. If France starts knocking down 3s like they have here in the first few minutes of the third quarter, the Americans are going to be in real trouble. 

Halftime: USA 25 -- France 25

This remains the exact type of game that the French wanted, and the Americans are not coping well with it at all. Team USA has already turned the ball over 13 times and is struggling mightily to finish in the paint against the long and physical French defense. Down on the other end, though, France has had just as much trouble putting the ball in the basket. 

At halftime, Team USA is shooting 8-of-28 from the field, while France is at 11-of-40. A'ja Wilson leads Team USA with eight points, while Gabby Williams has eight for France. 

Turnovers piling up for Team USA

France is a great defensive team, and their activity and physicality has caused real issues for Team USA. The Americans have already turned the ball over 12 times, and there's still five minutes left in the second quarter. Five different players already have multiple give aways. 

First quarter: USA 15 -- France 9

France has dictated the terms of this game, and Team USA struggled early on to deal with the physicality. The Americans' depth ultimately proved to be the difference in the first quarter, however, as Brittney Griner checked in late in the frame and scored back-to-back buckets to create some breathing room.

USWNT vs. Brazil highlights: USA wins Olympic gold for first time in 12 years

PARIS – The United States women’s national soccer team entered the 2024 Paris Olympics with a new coach and a retooled roster. Its track record at the biggest recent international tournaments had been underwhelming. Question marks abounded. 

The Americans’ rebuttal? A gold medal. 

The U.S. defeated Brazil 1-0 on Saturday to stand back on top of the Olympic podium for the first time in 12 years. Mallory Swanson , part of head coach Emma Hayes ’ new front three along with Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman , scored the game-winner in the 57th minute. Korbin Albert, inserted by Hayes into the starting lineup for the final, set her up with a timely through ball. 

"I've always had belief. I've said before, winning is in my DNA," Hayes said after the game. "... They've impressed me immensely, these players."

Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher ’s one-handed save on a header by Adriana in the fourth minute of stoppage time saved the day. And she was unflappable all match.

Brazil came out as the aggressor and the U.S. relied on Naeher to quell the attack. The final stat sheet said she made four saves. It felt like 14, and every one was huge – none more than her stop in stoppage time of the first half on Gabi Portihlo kept the match scoreless. Defender Naomi Girma continued to be something of a brick wall on the backline.

Although the first half ended with them on their heels, the Americans flipped the script early in the second. They fended off Brazil’s desperation the rest of the way and when the referee blew the final whistle, arms went up, hugs were given, and the celebration was on for the Olympic champions. 

"I think this group really just came together from the beginning of our pregame to know, we’ve grown so much," Swanson said after. "That’s really cool to me, seeing that on and off the field. I think most importantly, you’re probably hearing it, we’re playing with joy. We’re having so much fun. I’m just so happy."

"I didn’t think I was gonna cry," Rodman said, "But, oh my gosh, that was the hardest, most exhausting experience of my life, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I think honestly, my legs were crying more than my eyes, but it was so amazing. To be able to hug all my teammates, I’m so happy for Mal. Her alone made me cry to see what she’s been through to be here. I was emotional for others as well as myself, but it was just everything. I’m so happy."

U.S. players dogpiled each other as "Born in the USA" played, followed by "Livin' on a Prayer" and "Surfin' USA." The Americans then shook hands with the Brazilians and circled up near midfield, where Naeher and Hayes, whose sense of humor and demanding style has already built trust with the team, spoke to them.

"It’s a dream come true and the best feeling ever," Smith said. "A relief."

Emma Hayes sends message with Olympic gold medal

Emma Hayes may not call herself a miracle worker, but it’s hard to think of a better description.

By  winning the Olympic gold medal Saturday  – its fifth, for those keeping track – the U.S. women’s national team sent a message to the rest of the world that last summer’s World Cup debacle, and the sluggishness at the Tokyo Games, were aberrations. There is still work to be done, to quote one of Hayes’ favorite mantras, but they are very much back on the right track.

And Hayes has officially been on the job for just three months. Give her another three years, which is when the next World Cup is, and the USWNT is likely again to be the standard by which the rest of the world is measured.

What Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith said after winning Olympic gold

Trinity Rodman: "I think joy and belief’s the two biggest words for us. We’ve been having so much fun. But I think we still push each other really hard. I think there’s a misconception of, oh they laugh and dance all the time in training, they’re not serious, but we just proved to everyone that we are and we take this very serious."

Mallory Swanson: "I don’t think I’ve processed it yet. It’ll probably hit in a couple days when I’m on my flight back home what happened. I’m just so thankful that I was able to do it with this group."

Sophia Smith: "It’s a dream come true and the best feeling ever. A relief."

Welcome to the Summer of Mal. Mallory Swanson gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute on a signature run down the left side. Korbin Albert, starting in place of Rose Lavelle, delivered the through ball for either Sophia Smith or Swanson. Smith would have likely been ruled offside if she touched it. But Swanson swooped in and made a beeline for the net, and her right-footed blast beat Brazil’s keeper Lorena to break the scoreless tie.

US women's soccer Olympic gold medals

If it's an Olympics, you can find the U.S. women's national team on the medals podium. The Americans have won five golds at the Olympics (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2024), more than any other team, and also have a silver from Sydney in 2000 and a bronze from Tokyo. Do the math, and that means the USWNT has won a medal at every Olympics except 2016. Oh, and another fun fact? Three of the USWNT's golds have come after playing Brazil in the final in both 2004 and 2008.

The USWNT is 33-7-4 all-time at the Olympics, including four gold medals, won in 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2024.

Emma Hayes calls Naomi Girma the best defender she's ever seen

Emma Hayes paid Naomi Girma the ultimate compliment. Girma, the reigning U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, is widely recognized as one of the best centerbacks in the world. But Hayes said there’s no need for the qualifier .“She the best defender I've ever seen . Ever,” Hayes said after Girma’s stone-wall defense helped secure the USWNT’s 1-0 victory over Germany that sent the Americans into the gold medal match . “I've never seen a player as good as her in the back."

USA vs. Brazil score at halftime: 0-0

For the U.S., the first half of both the quarterfinals and semifinals were scoreless (and all of regulation, for that matter). The final against Brazil was no exception. 

Both teams had their fair share of scoring chances – Brazil’s more consistent compared to the Americans – but neither side had anything to show for it. 

Brazil’s Ludmila has been a handful for the U.S. back line to deal with. It looked like she put Brazil up in the 16th minute when she beat Naomi Girma off the dribble in the box, but luckily for the U.S., the offside flag went up. Alyssa Naeher came up huge during stoppage time to save a Gabi Porthilo strike. 

Mallory Swanson had the United States’ best chance of scoring on a long, speedy run with the ball. 

The match has been physical despite referee Tess Olofsson’s willingness to let play continue. Brazil was whistled for nine fouls compared to seven for the U.S. Possession had been nearly even for most of the match, but Brazil largely dominated the end of the half and ended up controlling the ball 54% of the time. 

Mallory Swanson’s speed almost leads to goal 

Mallory Swanson turned on the burners – and it almost led to the match’s first goal. Tierna Davidson cleared the ball from the U.S. defensive zone and Swanson found herself one-on-one with a Brazilian defender. Swanson took a couple of huge touches to win the footrace down the field and record a shot on net in the 26th minute – but it wasn’t the best angle. The subsequent U.S. rebound effort also came up empty. 

VAR review – no penalty

Speaking of physicality – there has been plenty more where that came from. Referee Tess Olofsson called for a VAR review in the 21st minute that would have led to a penalty shot from Brazil. The review revealed no foul on the U.S. in the box, however.

Brazil's Ludmila called offsides

What looked like an early deficit for the Americans turned out to be offsides by Brazil. The flag went on Ludmila, who beat Naomi Girma off the dribble in the box and fired one past Naeher. Amid the cries of celebration for the Brazil fans in the stands, the referee’s arm went in the air and the side judge on the far end of the field had the flag up.

USA vs. Brazil Olympic final fouls so far

The play has been physical and referee Tess Olofsson has been mostly keeping the whistle in the pocket. Lindsey Horan had a strong tackle near midfield in which she extended her arms but play went on, even as the U.S. won the ball back. Then Mallory Swanson went down after contact at the top of the box, but again, Olofsson let play continue.

USWNT starting lineup today

There's a big surprise in the USWNT lineup for the Olympic final against Brazil: No Rose Lavelle in the starting lineup. Lavelle has started each of the previous five games in the tournament. But she was replaced in the lineup by Korbin Albert. Lavelle is not injured, and is available as a sub. The rest of the lineup remains unchanged:

• Defenders: Crystal Dunn, Tierna Davidson, Naomi Girma, Emily Fox
• Midfielders: Korbin Albert, Lindsey Horan, Sam Coffey

USWNT's pink hair tradition

Even though she's retired, Megan Rapinoe still has influence with the USWNT. 

Trinity Rodman has been wearing pink braids throughout the Olympic tournament. Rapinoe, of course, was famous for her vibrant pink hair during the 2019 World Cup, which also was played in France. The USWNT won that World Cup that year, with Rapinoe picking up both the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player and the Golden Boot as its top scorer. 

"I guess we needed some color somewhere and pink's the color," Rodman said Thursday. "Pink, purple, whatever. So yeah, I guess we've got to continue that moving forward."

Part of the reason the Americans feel like they have been able to be themselves? Emma Hayes’ sense of humor. She’s been called “hilarious,” her one-liners and zingers frequent. She is demanding, to be sure, but her ability to crack jokes puts her players at ease.

"I think the one thing I love most about Emma is that she has the perfect balance of being serious but then you also see her goofy side too," Mallory Swanson said . "I think seeing that side of a coach helps a lot because we’re all human and she does such a good job of showing that."

USWNT vs. Brazil prediction

The road for Brazil to reach this point has been … interesting. Marta , the legend, took a red card in Brazil’s final match of group play and served a two-match suspension. The only way she could have returned to this tournament – said to be her last on the international stage – was if her teammates found a way to reach the gold-medal match. They did, and Marta will have at least one final moment in front of the globe. 

Spirit won’t be enough for the Brazilians against the U.S. though. The American back line, led by Naomi Girma , is stout. Alyssa Naeher has been solid in net. Although the U.S. has not flexed the offensive firepower in France, it has at least scored enough to reward the defense. Take your pick of The Triple Threat, The Big Three, “Triple Espresso” – whatever your preference is for the trio of Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith – to find the back of the net.

Brazil's Marta is getting a fitting sendoff

Marta , the Brazilian great, is playing her final international match today, when Brazil faces the U.S. It’s the fourth time in her career Marta has made the final at a major tournament, and third at the  Olympics . The Brazilians lost to the USWNT in 2004 and 2008. They also lost to Germany at the 2007 World Cup.

“We all wanted to play the final at the Olympics regardless of the circumstances. But of course this is an extra motivation,” Angelina said Friday. “We want to give this medal to Marta. She has given us so much throughout her career. She’s given everything she has to us and women’s football. She really deserves to play in the final.”

USWNT vs. Brazil Olympic history

The USWNT and Brazil have some history at the Olympics. The teams faced each other in the final in both 2004 and 2008, with the USWNT winning each time. Although no one from those USWNT teams is left, Brazilian icon Marta played in both games. Brazil scored one goal in those two games, by Pretinha in 2004. 

"What happened in the past is far away," Brazil coach Arthus Elias said Friday. "Football deserves great games and we should stop whining and talking about the past. We have new ingredients, new things to talk about rather than be thinking about the past. 

"I’m not worried at all about what happened in the past," Elias added. "I feel we are close to our dream coming true and that our players will do their very best tomorrow.”
