Steve Wilson appointed as new Associate Research Director for University Partnerships at Crick

10 May 2024

Professor Steve Wilson (UCL Biosciences) has assumed the role of the Crick's new Associate Research Director for University Partnerships, overseeing the institution's collaborations with UCL, King’s College London and Imperial College London.

Professor Steve Wilson at the Francis Crick Institute

Steve joins the Crick from UCL, where he is Professor of  Developmental Genetics (UCL Biosciences) and up until he started this new role, served as Vice-Dean for Research in the Faculty of Life Sciences. In undertaking his new role, Steve will now split his time between UCL and the Crick.

With a robust background in supporting the research community, Steve has a special emphasis on nurturing early career researchers and technical support staff.  His extensive experience includes serving on Wellcome funding panels for numerous years and, until recently, acting as the UCL Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Champion. At UCL, Steve helped to establish the UCL Excellence Fellowship scheme, facilitating the recruitment of many exceptional junior biomedical researchers.

Prior to joining UCL, Steve held positions at the University of Michigan and King’s College London. He has been recognised for his contributions, being elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2002 and to EMBO in 2005. In 2009, he was honoured with the Remedios Caro Almela Prize in Developmental Neurobiology. Additionally, Steve has contributed his expertise to international scientific advisory boards and review committees for various research institutes, including EMBL and the Max-Planck Institute for Neurobiology.

Steve's research at UCL focuses on utilising zebrafish to unravel the intricacies of vertebrate forebrain and eye development. Notably, his lab investigates the zebrafish epithalamus, as shown in the image above, which serves as a bridge connecting the limbic system to other brain regions. The small parapineal nucleus, highlighted in yellow, is one of the most conspicuous asymmetric features of this region of the brain.

Recently, his team collaborated with Vivian Li, a group leader at the Crick and several other research teams, to explore the genetic underpinnings of how neurons on the left and right sides of the zebrafish brain develop distinct properties, culminating in a publication in Science on 2 May.

Steve comments “The Crick/University Partnership schemes bring benefits both to participating researchers and to their host institutions and I’m really looking forward to supporting the people and activities that make the partnerships thrive. I will also be working with staff at the Crick and at the universities to understand how we might make our partnerships even more successful."

Specific nasal cells protect against COVID-19 in children

ucl research scholarships

15 April 2024

Differences in how young and older people’s nasal cells respond to the SARS-CoV-2 virus may explain why children typically experience milder COVID-19 symptoms.

The finding comes from a study funded by UK Research and Innovation, the National Institute for Health and Care Research, Great Ormond Street Hospital Biomedical Research Centre, Wellcome and the Chan Zuckerberg Foundation.

The study focused on the early effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the cells first targeted by the viruses, called human nasal epithelial cells (NECs).

The cells were donated by healthy participants from Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital.

The participants included children under the age of 11, adults aged 30 to 50 and, for the first time, adults over the age of 70.

Specialised techniques

The cells were then cultured using specialised techniques, allowing them to regrow into the different types of cells you originally find in the nose.

Using single-cell RNA sequencing techniques that enable scientists to identify the unique genetic networks and functions of thousands of individual cells, the team identified 24 distinct epithelial cell types.

Cultures from each age group were then either mock infected or infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Anti-viral effect

The research, published in ‘Nature Microbiology’, found that after three days the NECs of children responded quickly to SARS-CoV-2 by increasing interferon, the body’s first line of anti-viral defence, restricting viral replication.

However, this early anti-viral effect became less pronounced with age.

The researchers also found that NECs from older individuals not only produced more infectious virus particles, but also experienced increased cell shedding and damage.

The strong antiviral response in the NECs of children could explain why younger people typically experience milder symptoms.

In contrast, the increased damage and higher viral replication found in NECs from older individuals could be linked to the greater severity of the disease observed in older adults.

More detailed understanding

Project lead, Dr Claire Smith, from the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, said:

Our research reveals how the type of cells we have in our nose changes with age, and how this affects our ability to combat SARS-CoV-2 infection. This could be crucial in developing effective anti-viral treatments tailored to different age groups, especially for the elderly who are at higher risk of severe COVID-19.

Co-Senior author, Dr Kerstin Meyer, from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, said:

By carrying out SARS-CoV-2 infections of epithelial cells in vitro and studying the responses with single cell sequencing, we get a much more detailed understanding of the viral infection kinetics and see big differences in the innate immune response between cell types.

The importance of considering age as a critical factor

Children infected with SARS-CoV-2 rarely progress to respiratory failure, but the risk of mortality in infected people over the age of 85 remains high, despite vaccination and improving treatment options.

The research underscores the importance of considering age as a critical factor in both research and treatment of infectious diseases.

Co-senior author, Dr Marko Nikolic, from the UCL Division of Medicine, said:

It is fascinating that when we take away immune cells from nasal samples and are only left with nasal epithelial cells grown in a dish, we are still able to identify age-specific differences in our body’s response to the SARS-CoV-2 between the young and elderly to explain why children are generally protected from severe COVID-19.

Long-term implications

Dr Smith added:

Understanding the cellular differences at the initiation of infection is just the beginning. We now hope to investigate the long-term implications of these cellular changes and test therapeutic interventions using our unique cell culture model. This ‘gold-standard’ system is only possible with the support of our funders and the willingness of participants to provide their samples.

The team suggests that future research should consider how ageing impacts the body’s response to other viral infections.

This type of funding aims to facilitate cooperative research and development efforts research between small business concerns and non-profit US research institutions, with the potential for commercialization of innovative technological solutions.

However, unlike the SBIR, this program requires the small business applicant to be teamed up with a non-profit research institution already, which typically takes the form of a university or Federal Laboratory. The STTR program is also focused on the transfer of technology from the research institution, rather than just the research alone.

Government grants offer a golden opportunity to businesses looking to grow or recover their business. However, due to the competitive nature of the financing, you need to ensure your grant proposal is polished and stands out from the crowd.

We understand that writing a grant application might seem like a daunting process, especially if you’re a first-timer. So, to give your proposal the best chance possible of succeeding, take heed of these pointers below.

  • Give yourself enough time –  You don’t want to be writing a grant application against the clock. Writing a proposal can take much longer than you expect, so to account for unexpected hold-ups we recommend giving yourself at least 45 days to complete your written application.
  • Follow the instructions carefully – Don’t go off-piste when writing your application. Make sure you include all the information requested by the agency, and present it in the correct format.
  • Be as concise and clear as possible – Ensure your application is written in clear, simple language, and use as many candid examples as possible to paint a clear image for your reader. If you use any graphs or imagery, make sure you label them clearly as well.
  • Keep the audience in mind – The likelihood is that the reviewer won’t already be familiar with your business. To make sure you won’t gloss over necessary information write the proposal for an audience that’s hearing about your business for the first time.
  • Develop a proofreading strategy – You don’t want to hamper your application’s success with silly mistakes like typos or grammatical errors. So, to ensure your proposal looks polished carefully proofread the application or outsource the service to a professional.
