Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crossword.

Crossword puzzles have been published in newspapers and other publications since 1873. They consist of a grid of squares where the player aims to write words both horizontally and vertically.

Next to the crossword will be a series of questions or clues, which relate to the various rows or lines of boxes in the crossword. The player reads the question or clue, and tries to find a word that answers the question in the same amount of letters as there are boxes in the related crossword row or line.

Some of the words will share letters, so will need to match up with each other. The words can vary in length and complexity, as can the clues.

Who is a crossword suitable for?

The fantastic thing about crosswords is, they are completely flexible for whatever age or reading level you need. You can use many words to create a complex crossword for adults, or just a couple of words for younger children.

Crosswords can use any word you like, big or small, so there are literally countless combinations that you can create for templates. It is easy to customise the template to the age or learning level of your students.

Amanda Gorman: America’s future tense

Amanda Gorman

The day Amanda Gorman stepped onto the U.S. Capitol dais in 2021, she became more than the youngest inaugural poet in the nation’s history. Her words three years ago turned the former Los Angeles youth poet laureate into an instant icon, down to her meme-ified yellow jacket and bright red headband. Just weeks after an insurrection on those very steps, “The Hill We Climb” became both a balm and a promise that there was a way up and out, if the country could only get there together.

Discover the change-makers who are shaping every cultural corner of Los Angeles. This week we bring you The Creators, who are leaving their mark in film, art, music and more. Come back each Sunday for another installment.

If that promise remains unfulfilled, its messenger remains a potent symbol of the possible. Her unifying verses were drafted into a war erupting in classrooms over the inclusion of diverse authors addressing race and gender. Last May, Gorman’s poem, adapted into a book, was pulled from school shelves in Florida as the result of one parent’s complaint.

Gorman, 26, swiftly took to Instagram to share the news with more than 3 million followers, advocating not just for herself but for the thousands of authors facing an unprecedented surge in book bans. With one post, she raised more than $80,000 for the literary and human rights nonprofit PEN America.

It’s not just the money, but the reach: Gorman has galvanized a growing counterforce against speech restrictions. Kasey Meehan, director of PEN America’s Freedom to Read Program, told The Times that those donations, along with Gorman’s continued amplification of their work, has made a difference.

Younger voices such as Gorman’s are essential in motivating leaders to fight book bans with as much coordination and fervor as their opponents.

— Emily Drabinski, president of the American Library Assn.

“Her [interviews] led people to our websites” as they “were searching for Amanda Gorman,” Meehan said, calling her “a generational unifier.”

It’s not the only time the Angeleno has turned her fame into action. She raffled off signed copies of her book to raise $60,000 in the wake of last year’s Maui wildfires and wrote poignantly in the New York Times about the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea at a time when few Americans were paying attention.

Last June, Gorman was a closing speaker at the annual conference of the American Library Assn., one of the grant recipients of Gorman’s $3-million initiative, Writing Change . Emily Drabinski, president of the ALA, told The Times that younger voices such as Gorman’s are essential in motivating leaders to fight book bans with as much coordination and fervor as their opponents.

“It means a lot to us, as library workers who aren’t famous,” Drabinski said. “Library workers everywhere are facing the kinds of attacks that were directed at Amanda’s book.” Gorman let them — and others — know they were not alone.

Nonprofit alleges segregation in Ithaca school group meeting; Superintendent Brown responds

speech inspiring figures crossword

At the Ithaca City School District Board of Education's most recent meeting last week, superintendent Luvelle Brown denied claims from a conservative advocacy group alleging that the school would segregate students at an annual event.

Brown's denial came on Tuesday, May 28, the same day as allegations by William A. Jacobson , founder of the non-profit watchdog group, Equal Protection Project , that ICSD violated the Supreme Court's over 70-year-old rejection of racial segregation in public schools, with its annual Students of Color United (SOCU) summits.

In recent years, events and summits aimed mainly at students belonging to marginalized groups have been designed by school districts, creating a platform for students to connect, learn, and discuss issues that directly impact them.

“This is something that our young people have led and have developed, because they want a safe space and they want other people to see what that space looks like too,” Brown said Tuesday in a video recording posted by the district. “I would hope that it would be every day we’d have this kind of event, but it does not happen every day because of the supremacy and the lack of people seeing (our) humanity, and some folks leading with ‘your schools are failing.’"

What is the SOCU Summit?

According to the Ithaca High School calendar , the SOCU Summit 2024, was held Friday at the high school.

Students of all backgrounds took part in team-building activities, including gym games and sports, spoke on the issues they face together, and showcased their talents in performance or inspirational speech.

The SOCU Summit, traditionally an event for students of color in grades 6-12 within the school district, has faced criticism for its alleged exclusivity in the past. The Equal Protection Project delivered a letter to ICSD Superintendent Dr. Luvelle Brown and Board of Education President Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell, claiming the summits from 2021 to 2023 were racially exclusionary.

“A poster promoting SOCU 2024 indicates that SOCU 2024 is only for ‘Students of Color in grades 6-12 in Ithaca City School District,’” Jacobson said. "At EqualProtect.org, we reject the claim that there is a 'good' form of racism, or that the remedy for racism is more racism. These principles are embodied in the law and ICSD policies. Why were such policies not followed? ICSD should be transparent and open about how this situation came about."

Jacobson called on ICSD leadership to denounce and renounce any school events or programming segregated by race.

Reaction from Cornell professor and Equal Protection Project

Jacobson is a Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Securities Law Clinic at Cornell Law School . Before joining the Cornell law faculty in 2007, he had a law firm in Providence, Rhode Island, concentrating in investment, employment, and business disputes in the securities industry.

Jacobson launched the Equal Protection Project in 2023 , according to the Cornell Review, and it's been devoted to about a dozen cases involving alleged segregation or equal rights infringements with school districts since.

After the board met Tuesday, Jacobson said Brown's statement about inclusion in the event was not implied by the school board.

"In our letter to ICSD, the Equal Protection Project documented the racially exclusionary history of the Students of Color United Summits, and the promotion of this year's Summit as limited to students and staff 'of color.' Dr. Brown did not address the substance of our letter in his public comments,” Jacobson said. “Nonetheless, I am glad that Dr. Brown has stated that the SOCU Summit will be open to all. That message of openness needs to be promoted vigorously and immediately to the ICSD community, because a contrary message of exclusion has been communicated previously, as detailed in our Letter to ICSD."

Jacobson also founded the website legalinsurrection.com , - a conservative-leaning blog where he published an article on the Equal Protection Project's concerns regarding Brown's comments, among other content supporting former president Donald Trump in his bid for reelection this year and denouncing "Anti-Israel" campus protestors.

Jacobson is no stranger to speaking on American politics in the media: he's been featured on FOX news several times in recent years.

Brown's response to Cornell professor

At last week's meeting, Brown discussed student summits and their inclusivity, countering Jacobson’s claims by inviting everyone who wished to attend to the event, according to the video.

Brown compared the SOCU Summits to events he went to in his past, highlighting them for their inclusivity and openness, which allows for students who may otherwise feel threatened or ignored a chance to open up and be themselves.

“Just like in our school district, I have been a part of affinity groups all my life, every Sunday and Wednesday I went to a place where an affinity group met.” Brown said in a video from the meeting, which was highlighted by the district when asked for comment. “It was an affinity group that, because of the food that was eaten there, the language that was spoken, the cadence, the clothes we wore, everything about that group and that space was consistent with my cultural background, behavior, and identity. It felt safe, and it was good.”

Morning Briefing: Asia Pacific Edition

Monday briefing: what’s next for south africa.

Also, India’s elections and internet in the Amazon.

South Africans reject the A.N.C.

The African National Congress has lost its political monopoly on South Africa . Election results on Saturday showed that the party had fallen short of winning an absolute majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The A.N.C. received about 40 percent of the vote, which was the largest share but a dramatic drop from the nearly 58 percent it received in the last election, in 2019. It has cost the A.N.C. — which rose to international acclaim on the shoulders of Nelson Mandela — its majority in Parliament, which elects the president, and it has two weeks to cobble together a government and elect a president.

Rival parties, however, have derided the A.N.C. as corrupt and have vowed never to form an alliance with it. A big question is whether the A.N.C. would ally with Jacob Zuma, its former leader, who resigned as president in 2018 because of corruption allegations. A new party that he helped start just six months ago won almost 15 percent of the vote.

The Democratic Alliance drew the second-largest share, nearly 22 percent. It is a potential ally for the A.N.C., but some A.N.C. members have accused the Democratic Alliance of promoting policies that would essentially take the country back to apartheid. Here’s what might happen next .

Voter frustrations: South Africans face one of the world’s highest unemployment rates, shortages of electricity and water and rampant crime. Many see the A.N.C. as something of a relic . “Maybe they had a plan to fight apartheid, but not a plan for the economy,” one voter said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa: The A.N.C.’s leader will have to pull together his highly factionalized party to form a coalition. Some may blame him for the devastating defeat, and seek new party leadership.

Modi seems poised for a third term

Results will be tallied and announced tomorrow in India’s general election. Narendra Modi seems likely to win a third consecutive term as prime minister , which would make him only the second leader in India’s nearly 75 years as a republic to achieve that feat.

His Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party put the focus almost entirely on Modi’s popular leadership in order to overcome growing anti-incumbent sentiment. The opposition, despite being hamstrung by arrests and other crackdowns, mustered its most united front in years, but exit polls indicated that it was struggling to cut into the B.J.P.’s sizable parliamentary majority.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, was put on the spot in the past few days by President Biden, who called for a truce in Gaza on Friday and outlined broad terms that he said were presented by Israel. “It’s time for this war to end,” Biden said.

In response, Netanyahu reiterated on Saturday that Israel would not agree to anything that did not result in the “destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities.” But notably absent was Netanyahu’s oft-stated goal of “total victory” over Hamas.

Starlink comes to the amazon.

The Marubo people have long lived in communal huts scattered hundreds of miles along the Ituí River deep in the Amazon. They have preserved their way of life for hundreds of years through isolation.

But since September, the Marubo have had high-speed internet , thanks to Elon Musk. The 2,000-member Marubo tribe — like of hundreds across Brazil — is logging on with Starlink, the satellite-internet service Musk runs.

Initially, the internet brought clear benefits, like video chats with faraway loved ones and calls for help in emergencies. Now they are already grappling with challenges long familiar to households worldwide: teenagers glued to phones, addictive social networks, online strangers, violent video games, scams, misinformation and minors watching porn.

“People were on it all the time,” my colleague Jack Nicas, our Brazil bureau chief, explains in a video , “so much that it became a problem for the hunting and the farming that are necessary for their way of life.”
