17 Biggest Advantages and Disadvantages of Advertising

Advertising is the profession or activity of producing consumer marketing messages for commercial products or services. Although there are times when companies can advertise for free, this tactic typically involves paying another agency for space to promote something specific. The goal of this investment is to reach as many people as possible who are likely to pay for the items suggested in the ads.

When businesses start advertising, then it is essential for each firm to find their ideal customer. It is cheaper to create ads that work with a specific population group instead of working with generalized data. Companies can look at gender, age, education, income, and a person’s geographic location to determine if there is a strong likelihood that someone will become a customer.

Advertising can occur in a variety of ways. Outlets include television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Some companies use billboards, the sides of buildings, or product packaging. Internet options continue to expand.

That’s why the advantages and disadvantages of advertising require a careful review. It could be a way to expand the influence of a brand, but this investment could also be a waste of money if not approached correctly.

List of the Advantages of Advertising

1. Advertising is what sets companies apart from each other. Advertising is the fastest way for an organization to prove the expertise it offers in its industry. This marketing approach allows a company to look at the specific pain points its goods or services address so that customers can independently decide if there is value available to consider. The free-market system allows consumers to make choices based on their needs for innovation, so the advantage here is that improved communication occurs from the business to the consumer.

2. Companies can reach multiple markets and population groups simultaneously. Advertising is one of the most straightforward ways to contact multiple demographics simultaneously. This investment helps a company to discover who their primary consumers are in better ways, along with the demographics to which they belong. Marketing through paid and unpaid platforms contributes to data that enables prospect duplication.

Advertising also allows a company to reach out to multiple new markets to judge how influential their marketing messages can be in the future.

3. Businesses can concentrate their advertising on a single population group. Advertising enables a company to target one population group specifically. We see this benefit daily through direct mail efforts, email marketing blasts, and television commercials. When you can time these messages to correspond with times or circumstances where a consumer feels a pain point, then a successful conversion is more likely to happen. It forms a natural networking opportunity that helps prospects engage with a brand message because they can acknowledge the created value proposition.

4. Advertising creates economic benefits at every level. The advertising economy in the United States is responsible for almost 20 million jobs. It is available in every market at each level, from ultra-local to international campaigns. This industry provides opportunities for almost every skill, ranging from sales-based approaches to creative careers like graphic design or writing. When successful outreach efforts occur, then businesses increase revenues. That creates even more jobs that support other companies at every level.

This cycle repeats itself every time a new advertising campaign occurs. Although there are no guarantees for success, a company must make itself known to its community for customers to become aware of its goods or services. That means there’s always a place for it.

5. The advertising industry creates a global culture. Every global event that involves participation, goods, or services requires advertising content to increase exposure. The budget for the Olympic Games in each cycle is several billion dollars. Companies use sponsorships, naming rights, and other strategies to increase brand awareness in a variety of ways. It gives us an opportunity to work together to support the common good at every level.

Even a group of businesses that support a youth soccer league get to take advantage of this benefit. Although the benefits are more localized with that support, it’s still creating a global culture within that community.

6. It gives an opportunity to create niche expertise presentations. The prevalence of PDF downloads, ebooks, whitepapers, and similar written content is a form of advertising that businesses use to prove their expertise. Advertising is moving toward a place where the value to the consumer is the priority instead of what the customer can do for the business. This benefit works for B2B and B2C firms because it shows people what can be done for them instead of telling them what can happen.

That’s why this form of advertising is so effective. It builds loyalty by focusing on relationships instead of relying on logo recognition or a tagline to stay at the top of the mind of possible consumers.

7. Advertising helps a customer make positive choices. Each customer has a different preference for specific products or services based on the pain points they encounter in life. Some choices are going to be more appealing than others, which is why businesses promote what they offer proactively. If someone can compare value propositions in real-time situations to determine what options provide the best value, then that ability increases the likelihood of a transaction taking place.

Businesses can provide specific or broad data about their goods or services to each demographic in unique ways to encourage this advantage. It is a benefit that can lead to tremendous growth opportunities when handled appropriate.

8. It is a straightforward way to support moral or social issues. Companies can support the public good by producing advertising campaigns that can bring more awareness to specific societal issues. Homelessness, cyberbullying, and similar concerns receive exposure in ways that wouldn’t be available to consumers without this marketing effort. Even though there are production costs to consider with this advantage, the value that occurs through increased revenues and economic activities from helping others more than makes up for the initial investment.

List of the Disadvantages of Advertising

1. Everyone is advertising. The average person gets exposed to over 2,000 brand messages every day because of advertising. That makes this marketing effort less effective unless there is a way for a company to rise above all of that noise. This disadvantage is the reason why you see businesses like Geico take unique approaches to this investment, using a mix of humor and character development to create something memorable.

Most people spend less than five seconds to determine if an advertisement is worth their attention. If that content fails, then the remainder of the ad gets forgotten.

2. Advertising cannot produce guaranteed results. Businesses take a gamble when they pay for advertising. This marketing effort doesn’t come with a guarantee. The companies that purchased TV spots during the 2020 Super Bowl were paying over $5 million for a segment. That’s a massive investment in something that may not produce additional revenues.

Although there is value in brand recognition, that outcome only translates to investment when it creates an eventual conversion. Having someone know that Flo represents Progressive isn’t beneficial if that person always uses public transportation. That’s why most small businesses focused on targeted, localized ads as a way to create results.

3. The cost of advertising can be a disadvantage to small businesses. The cost of TV advertising at local television stations is at least $5 for every 1,000 viewers during a 30-second commercial. Then you have the cost of creative development when taking this marketing approach to consider. By the time the first spot hits the air, a company has likely spent at least $10,000 to create the materials and purchase the airtime.

National spots are much more expensive. Businesses that purchase a 30-second television ad on a national broadcast spent an average of $115,000 per slot in 2019.

4. Potential customers may be on multiple platforms. If brand recognition is the goal of an advertising effort, then a business may need to invest in multiple platforms to gain the levels of familiarity they require. You can advertise in printed publications, online blogs, television, radio, Internet ad services, and all of the other traditional methods. A company might find over 100 different ways to reach their customers. When an advertising budget is financially limited, then finding out where most people are consistently becomes a top priority.

5. Advertising requires interesting materials to be useful. The best advertising efforts create memorable experiences for targeted consumers. If you’re a science-fiction fan, then you probably remember all of the exposure Taco Bell paid for itself in the movie Demolition Man. If you’re a fan of older superhero movies, then you may remember the giant Coca-Cola billboard blowing up in Superman. If a business can’t create such an experience, then the entire message gets forgotten.

This disadvantage means that every business must continuously invest in innovative marketing approaches to stay relevant. It’s also the reason why you see brands trying to copy the success that others find in this arena.

6. The “Fake News” movement tarnishes the reputation of advertisers. Politics in the United States has become a fractured, cantankerous space where anyone who doesn’t agree becomes an enemy. If a business advertises through a traditional media outlet that promotes a political agenda or news stories that someone finds to be disagreeable, then that company’s brand becomes directly tied to that experience. Although the people who agree will be more likely to purchase goods or services, those who don’t will boycott the agency indefinitely.

7. Advertising increases the risk of a brand message getting tarnished. Advertising can be memorable for all of the wrong reasons sometimes, leaving viewers to wonder what a business was thinking when putting a spot together. Qiaobi often receives credit for putting together one of the most racist commercials in history by having a Chinese woman forcing a black man into her washing machine after he whistles at her. Once the washing cycle is finished, a winking Asian man emerges.

Miracle Mattress put together a local advertising spot that mocked the events of 9/11, including having two stacks of mattresses fall on workers. Burger King unleashed a regional spot for their Texican Whopper that had the tagline of “The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican” – and the add featured a tall American cowboy and a short Mexican wrestler.

8. Most people consider advertising to be a nuisance. Extravagant advertising may have a positive effect on the economy. Still, it tends to harm consumers when the same promotions happen repetitively. This disadvantage occurs in the United States every two years during the election cycles when political ads take over the television and radio. It can also happen when spots frequently occur within the same broadcast or publication.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising may get spent on a single election, exposing populations to competing messages that get monotonous and bothersome when they air several times per hour.

9. The targeted consumers may not see the marketing message from an advertising effort. New technologies make it easier than ever before for consumers to proactively opt-out of viewing advertisements. Popup blockers for Internet browsers can eliminate almost every ad that might display when users are online. Families can fast-forward through ads on broadcast networks when they record shows to watch. Some providers even offer tech that eliminates this marketing effort automatically.

Even if someone is watching live TV, an advertisement break creates an opportunity to walk away from the television. Companies can pay millions without ever knowing if their intended audience is available to watch what they’ve put together.

Advertising messages are an effort to persuade people to purchase specific goods or services. This outcome is also the goal of B2B transactions. A person must become convinced that one item is better over another. That’s why each ad offers a headline, subheading, body copy, image, and a call-to-action. It’s like a 30-second speech that shows how much value something has to a potential client.

Advertising isn’t the only way to get a message seen or heard. It can be more expensive to utilize than other marketing opportunities. That’s why it tends to be more popular with large corporations than sole proprietors and other small businesses.

The advantages and disadvantages of advertising balance cost with the opportunity to increase revenues and consumer awareness. Although there are no guarantees for success, this marketing option can produce immediate and memorable results.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Essay

Advertising is gaining more popularity in the marketing of products or services. While advertisements are considered to be advantageous, they can have numerous negative influences.

It is unquestionable that there are several benefits of advertising. By dint o f the large-scale expansion of advertising in almost every kind of mass media and nearly all hoardings , this sector is likely to generate a diversity of employment opportunities . In other words, it provides occupations for artists, painters or copywriters in designing and preparing logos, contents or ideas for advertisements. Another advantage is that advertising may enable the messages involved in products and services to reach potential customers , followed by an increase in sales for businesses. Additionally, only thanks to advertisements, can customers be kept informed about newly-launched products . Therefore, they have more choices to make about their beloved products, contributing to the enhancement of their comforts and standard of living.

However, advertising could cause several disadvantages for customers. No sooner might companies or business exaggerate or even distort the facts related to their products for commercial purposes than the customers can experience feelings of confusion about these items, making them have troubles   selecting the products to their taste. Furthermore, the facts show that the more advertising expenses increase, the higher the product price is. The reason can be that the selling price of the advertised items covers the high cost of advertisements . As a result, the advertised products can cost more than they should. Finally, when customers cannot resist the temptation of products which are advertised beyond customers’ expectations , there is every likelihood of them purchasing products which may be unnecessary. This trend could be seen as a waste of money.

In conclusion, based on the aforementioned explanations, individuals may gain both considerable benefits and drawbacks through the growing prevalence of advertisements.

How to Write a Pros & Cons Essay: Step-By-Step Guide

Trying to convince someone to take your word on a particular subject isn’t straightforward. You must present convincing arguments backed by proof to encourage your opponent to change their mind. Moreover, the pros and cons essay must also cover the opposing standpoints.

You may wonder why this is relevant. Undoubtedly, most issues in our modern society are multidimensional and double or often triple-sided. There’s no concept clearly black and white, for the simple reason that no two people on Earth have an identical point of view.

Therefore, writing pro and con essays is vital for students of all ages. In the process, you will learn to think analytically and reason things from different angles. Whatever your thoughts on the topic, you must prove your point by offering convincing evidence and facts.

For those who never had the chance to write a pros & cons essay, the time has come to take the plunge. The start may be intimidating, but you’ll soon get the hang of it. To help you, we list a few helpful tips and examples to consider for your pro and con paper.

What Is a Pros and Cons Essay?

Before you set your aims high, let’s explain what for and against essays are. You must also understand the importance of this kind of academic assignment to write efficiently. A pros & cons essay is a written task that elaborates on the advantages and disadvantages of a specific problem. The paper covers different sides of a single topic where your argument prevails.

The most challenging aspect for students is that they can’t just list the benefits and drawbacks of a pressing matter. Instead, they must summarize ideas, like when writing a synthesis essay , and pick a side by stating their point. Moreover, the paper must have a logical flow that ends with your attitude.

The introduction should signpost the direction in which you’re steering. State your opinion only after you’ve meticulously analyzed all for and against arguments.

What to Consider When Writing a Pros and Cons Essay

A Compelling Topic

The topic you choose must have inherent positive and negative sides. Avoid themes with evident benefits and no disadvantages. Similarly, skip obviously disadvantageous topics because those are tiresome and time-consuming. For example, write about an issue with pronounced bad and good sides, such as advertising, online education, or modern technologies. However, the ultimate decision will depend on the course specifics and your professor’s guidelines.

Relevant Ideas

Your work must offer a unique perspective on a central idea. And you must support the main claim with at least three arguments. Including every possible pro and con will overwhelm the reader and won’t make your work impactful.

Instead, write about the core aspects of the issue. You can find numerous relevant examples on Paperell if you lack inspiration. Also, ensure you discuss the strongest point at the onset. Similarly, refute the most relevant con in the end to demonstrate your ability to handle opposing views.

Write in the traditional format. It should consist of an introduction, middle paragraphs (one paragraph for each idea), and a conclusion. Use short and concise sentences to avoid losing yourself in your thoughts. Run-on sentences will confuse the reader and impede seamless reading.

Originality

Refrain from copying other works without including quotations. Your paper must be 100% authentic. If you decide to seek assistance from a platform that offers online essays for sale , ensure it is reliable. Most custom paper services abide by strict academic standards and deliver plagiarism-free work.

Make sure your ideas are relevant, supported by facts, and not arbitrary. Also, typos are unacceptable for these kinds of assignments. To avoid losing points on technical aspects, review your grammatical structures and use plenty of synonyms for the keywords in the essay.

How to Write a Pros and Cons Essay?

For a rookie, the essay composition process might prove an uphill task. However, with practice, you’ll become more efficient and productive. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to write your essay.

Do Thorough Research

Examine the assigned topic and focus on important information on the subject. Try to find credible sources that are objective and fact-based. Though you probably have an opinion on the problem, don’t let it blur your objectivity.

Brainstorm the Advantages and Disadvantages

Once you find enough positive and negative sides of the matter, write them in a list. Ensure you provide examples for each point, as you’d do in exemplification essay writing for your college assignments. Write two columns and rate items by relevance. The top three benefits should go in the paper.

Draft the Essay Skeleton

Decide what outline you’ll use. One approach is to write each pro and con in different paragraphs. Alternatively, you might want to dedicate every paragraph to one aspect of the dilemma, discussing both pros and cons simultaneously.

Be Creative

Start your journey with an attention-grabbing idea that urges your audience to keep reading. To this end, choose a hook for an essay that is topic-related and amusing. Also, when writing a pros and cons paper, the thesis statement should tell the reader what follows.

In the body section, discuss the points you decided to include but with examples and facts. Each paragraph should start with a topic sentence, and all explanations should relate to the main claim. The conclusion must summarize the essay, restate your position, and compel the reader to contemplate the problem.

Editing and proofreading your work is critical for an impeccable essay. Ensure your punctuation, spelling, and grammar are error-free.

Plagiarism Free Pros & Cons Essay

Writing a 100% original manuscript isn’t straightforward. As much as you try to paraphrase, sophisticated tools recognize your attempts. The same will happen with the trained eye of your professor. Consider the following tips to avoid plagiarized essays.

Cite Properly

Citations are vital, so you must give credit to all sources you’re using in your paper. This way, you show you can borrow information with integrity. Failure to include quotations and references is plagiarism. The best way to cite a study or research is to follow the APA style.

Use a Plagiarism Checker

Your teachers use specialized tools to check the plagiarism level in your essay. Doing this will spare you a lot of trouble and effort. Try your free plagiarism checker with percentage to get a detailed report on your work. If you spot copied content, rewrite it to express your ideas differently.

Be Original

Pros and cons essays reveal your side on a specific subject. Hence, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to your opinions. With original ideas, you won’t have to worry about plagiarism. Still, always base your thoughts on relevant research and use the conclusion to call for action. Need help with the pros and cons essay? You can pay for papers online to get professional help. • Negative Association – Some advertisements may be perceived as offensive or inappropriate, which can lead to negative associations with the product or service being promoted. This can damage the reputation of the brand and lead to decreased sales.
  • Environmental Impact – Advertising can have a negative impact on the environment, particularly with regards to printed materials such as flyers, posters, and billboards. These materials can contribute to waste and pollution.

It is well known that “money makes money”. For example, a business should advertise its products to create awareness. An average individual gets 1,000 messages every day from different brands. This promotes business. However, advertising comes with advantages and disadvantages that should be considered. Here are the pros and cons of advertising.

1. Reach many people at the same time: Advertising opens the door for reaching many individuals at the same time. It helps to know primary customers and where they belong thus giving information that allows cloning. Also, it reaches new demographics.

2. Solves problems: Advertising provides a value proposition for products. Customers need to know how something can solve problems before buying. If the value gotten is good or better than the message advertised, it creates a solid relationship with clients.

3. Set products from the competition: People want to purchase want to buy good products at an affordable price. For instance, a bottle of champagne goes for $100 and Dom Perignon goes for $20. Someone will prefer to buy 5 bottles of Dom at a cheap price.

4. Provides information: Consumers have different perspectives and preferences for products. This includes flavors, prices, and specific comparisons that show how one item is appealing. Advertising help customers to select their choice.

5. Inspires: Adverts can create imaginations that inspire people. For example “God made a farmer”, the simple sentence inspires people.

6. Promote moral and social issues: Public adverts create awareness through campaigns including homelessness and bullying. These messages spur support and people across the world benefit from it.

7. Promotes global culture advertising: helps to fund things that we enjoy nowadays. For example, the London games of 2012 required $3.5 billion to run. These costs were covered by advertising sponsorship.

8. Support economic: There is an increase in GDP when advertising is available. The growth rate is live if adverts are major points of emphasis. Further, industries that advertise have better growth than those that do not.

9. Creates employment: Advertising gives 18 million jobs in the United States which supports the economy. There are improved revenues that grow jobs within industry and business.

1. Expensive and time-consuming: Advertisements are not affordable. It costs money and time to complete successfully. For instance, creating videos, editing the content, uploading resources as well as responding to comments.

2. Unguaranteed return: A business can spend $1 million on advertisements and receive a $0 return.

3. Sometimes unethical: Children under the age of 10 can believe everything they see on tv. Not all advertisements are ethical, some influential people spend money on something not intended. Someone can see a picture of unhealthy foods including burgers and pizza. Then they will decide to buy instead of preparing healthy food.

4. Ruin enjoyment: Placement of product may ruin experiences. Some products crush over others hence creating a negative effect.

5. Miss intended targets: The main aim of advertisements is to reach intended targets. People may decide to change stations, switch television, or not log on to the internet for long.

6. Nuisance: When the same advertisement happens many times, it becomes a nuisance to the audience. Political campaigns are always irritating and repetitive.

7. Advertisements are linked with media: Advertisements are received through media. It lowers the subscription prices of magazines and newspapers.

8. Difficult in delivering unique information: Advertisements reach globally in minutes. It is hard for the business to be unique on its own. Advertising requires innovation and finding new ways to stay unique.

Social Media Pros and Cons

Offering a balanced view, This essay will weigh the pros and cons of social media usage, discussing its effects on society, personal relationships, and individual well-being. At PapersOwl too, you can discover numerous free essay illustrations related to Communication.

How it works

Today, social media is one of the greatest elements present in our lives. With the rapid growth of social media platforms, we can send or receive any kind of information and even talk with people all over the world just with the click of a button. Adults and youths alike join platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat (among others) for dialogue with friends and family and even to meet new people. Since the inception of these platforms, the world has changed in many ways, and while there are some negative associations with social media, the positive aspects outnumber the negative.

These will all be discussed as part of this ‘Pros and Cons of social media’ essay.

Social media gives society an opportunity to grow and helps to widen the pathways for businesses. For a business, it expands their horizon to utilize social media marketing and advertising, which can help them to reach out to current and even future clients. I can attest to this as my father owns an auto part business in The Caribbean. He first met some of his suppliers through Facebook, as he advertised his business there. After making that connection, he then took business trips, sometimes twice per year, to have direct communication with these suppliers; he was even granted opportunities to gain more suppliers while on these trips. Those he met via social media went on and advertised his business to others on his behalf, and this brought in more business opportunities. To leave his home country and go out searching for suppliers would have been much harder for my father if it were not for social media. Potential opportunities can be obtained through social media as well, it is a platform where one can go to access information of all sorts. It is also a popular way through which employers can reach out to people seeking jobs in any country, as well as being an awesome platform for raising awareness of social causes.

Social media is now more popular than the newspaper. People find adverts about job openings quicker while browsing through a social media platform because that is where they spend most of their time. One finds it hard to pick up a newspaper these days, especially the youth; they think that this is something for elders and older adults to do to pass time. Social media helps one have good communication with people all around the world, either for business or pleasure. Some people even meet their future soul mates and friends via social platforms.

Although some parents view social media as a distraction to their children, it can also be helpful to them. AJ Agrawal stated, “Teens want to be aware and informed just as much as adults. Using social media allows teens to follow organizations and causes that they believe in. It makes them feel like they are a part of something, even when they feel like an outcast in society.” Children tend to always want to be a part of what adults are doing, which can be unhealthy for them because there are some adult conversations that children should not be a part of. Allowing children access to social media is a good distraction when adults are engaged in their own dialogue so that the children do not feel like parents are neglecting them. There they can find different social groups to become members of, organizations that they can learn from, and even just pass the time by playing a game or socializing with friends. Social media can also help them with news and research for school.

However, this is not just an essay about the Pros and Cons of social media for youth. Social media is often used as a platform to get the news out that is not aired through the traditional media companies. There are many news media companies around the world, but they cannot give coverage of all the news on a daily basis. AJ Agrawal states an important fact when he says, “When natural disasters strike and cause devastating destruction, social media is the ideal vehicle to deliver messages asking for support.” Take, for example, 2017, when Hurricane Maria destroyed the beautiful island of Dominica, along with other beauties that make up the archipelago known as ‘The Caribbean.’ In a situation like this, the companies there would have also been caught in the devastation on the ground. Media companies like CBS, CNN, and NBC are too far away to air what is going on. I can recall my Dominican colleagues here in Wichita Falls trying to contact their families after hearing of houses being damaged, with excess water everywhere and roofs flying off of buildings. With tears in their eyes, some of them got relief when their families were able to use their mobile phones and send them a message via Facebook, Instagram, and even Snapchat to let them know of their situations, even though it took a few days for some. Also, I remember Facebook being flooded with messages seeking help, even The Prime Minister had to seek help through social media because he was trapped in his house. Those good samaritans who heard his cry got him the necessary assistance to ride out the storm.

Social Media can help people to follow individuals who inspire them via their posts, photos, and even life experiences. Maggie R. Guinta and Rita M. John noted that “The depth of engagement with others on social media, not frequency or duration, is associated with a positive well-being” (198). Words from family and friends can only go so far. ‘I love you, you are beautiful, and have a good day’ amongst others are some words you hear every day from family; some say it just to lighten the mood of an individual, and some just do not mean anything, shown by their tone or even the facial expression portrayed while saying so. Sometimes people need someone outside of their families to tell them these things. Also, there are things that an individual feels more comfortable telling others, putting his/her trust in an outsider based on past experiences, as opposed to telling their family. Having access to social media to view other people’s photos and postings can help with positive well-being and self-esteem as it may motivate them to portray an image like that particular person. It also gives an opportunity to communicate with counselors or other peers at one’s own convenience.

Finally, social media is also helpful in the health care system. Yibai Li and his colleagues noted that “social media not only facilitates health information-seeking activities but also allows users to share health information.” This is an excellent approach as it is helpful; for instance, if a doctor has to refer a patient to another doctor for whatever reason, it is easier to transfer the patient’s file via social media. This is a plus for the environment because less trees are being cut down to get paper to print the information for the doctor. Also, it helps outpatients who sometimes misplace the information that the doctor sends them with. Yibai Li and his colleagues also mentioned, “Using social media, health care providers can post health information not only in text but also in more easily accessible forms, such as images and videos, which can be retrieved at any time of day.” This can relieve institutions of excessive clutter. Also, after having all the information on social media, it can offer some more space to move around or get more needed equipment for better care of patients.

Social media can be helpful and beneficial if it is used in the correct ways. It not only helps in the expansion of one’s business but also in keeping people motivated with other people’s stories as they learn from it. All in all, it requires a good balance for social media to be a good influence in one’s life, and one must carefully weigh the benefits before engaging in it excessively. Being a student, one must be on the ball with one’s studies, find time for exercise, and limit social media for anything that does not pertain to school in order to live a well-proportioned life.

Social media offers numerous benefits. It facilitates social connections, enables individuals to communicate with their loved ones, and stay informed about recent happenings worldwide. Furthermore, it provides a stage for people to showcase their artistic abilities and voice their thoughts on various subjects. Besides, social media platforms can be utilized for commercial and promotional activities.

Social media has several drawbacks, including the potential for addiction and time-wasting, the tendency to create anxiety and fear of missing out, the ability to foster trolls and online bullying, the possibility of diverting attention away from in-person relationships, and the risk of spreading inaccurate information.

There are varying opinions on the impact of social media on mental health. Some individuals contend that social media can be beneficial for mental health as it offers an avenue for individuals to interact and exchange experiences. Conversely, others suggest that social media can be detrimental to mental health as it may contribute to isolation, anxiety, and depression. The reality is that social media can have both favorable and adverse effects on mental health contingent on how it is utilized.

24 Pros and Cons of Advertising

It’s often said that “it takes money to make money.” This often refers to the fact that a business must advertise in order to create an awareness of what is being offered to the general public. The average person is exposed to over 1,000 different brands and messages every day that promote a business or specific products. This means there are some certain advantages that can be gained by advertising, but there are certain disadvantages in the modern advertising campaign that must be considered as well.

If you’re thinking about a new advertising campaign, then here are some of the pros and cons to consider as you begin creating.

The Pros of Advertising

1. It’s an easy way to create a value proposition. Prospects need to see that something can solve a problem for them in order for them to consider making a purchase. Value is often seen as saving someone time or saving them money. Advertising is an easy way to prove that there is a value proposition to be considered with a brand or product. If the real value which is received is equal to or greater than the perceived value received in an advertising message, then a solid relationship can be built.

2. It creates a way to set brands and products apart from the competition. People today don’t just want to buy something that is “good enough.” They want to purchase the best product at the best price. If someone has got $100 to spend on Champagne and there’s a bottle of Dom Perignon found within that person’s budget, would they spend all of their cash on the bottle of Dom or buy 5 bottles of $20 Champagne instead? Setting a brand apart gives the product extra value and that’s why most people would purchase the bottle of Dom.

3. It reaches multiple demographics simultaneously. Advertising is one of the easiest ways to reach out to multiple target groups at the same time. This action helps a business to better discover who their primary customers tend to be, the demographics to which they belong, and provides information that allows for prospect cloning. It also gives a business the chance to reach out to multiple new demographics in order to judge how influential their marketing messages happen to be.

4. One single target demographic can also be emphasized. Advertising also allows for a business to specifically target one demographic. This is seen every day with direct mail campaigns, email marketing, and even food commercials that air right when people get done with their 9-5 grind and don’t feel like cooking. If a business knows when and where they can reach specific prospects, then advertising creates a natural relationship-building point that can help prospects engage because they appreciate the value proposition that has been created.

5. Ultra-specific demographics can be targeted today. In the past, advertising was about choosing a certain time of day, a specific zip code, or households that earned a certain amount of money. Today all of these can become filters for an ultra-specific advertising campaign that happens online. This allows a business to find their best customers in the best places and keep replicating those results over a potentially infinite period of time.

6. It provides consumers information about choice. Every consumer has different personal preferences that make certain products more appealing than others. From flavors to prices to specific product comparisons to show how one product is better, companies can provide information about broad options that can appeal to broad demographics so that consumers can practice their right to choose what products are best for them.

7. Advertising provides economic growth and support. When advertising is available in major markets, there is a direct correlation to that market’s GDP increases to the amount of advertising that is consumed. This is even true on an industry level within an overall economy. Certain industries that advertise more often have better growth results than industries that don’t advertise. Growth is always the liveliest when advertising is a major point of emphasis.

8. Advertising creates jobs. In the United States alone, advertising provides over 18 million jobs that contribute to the economy in various ways. It isn’t just in the creative industry either. Improved revenues because of advertising contribute to job growth within the business or industry and this provides more profitability, which eventually leads to more job growth. Then the cycle repeats itself with every new advertising campaign, helping many people in the process of generating revenues for a business at the same time.

9. Advertising supports global culture. Without advertising, many of the things we enjoy today would be either more expensive or wouldn’t exist at all. For example, the 2012 London Games had an estimated cost of $3.5 billion in order to run. All of those costs were covered through advertising sponsorships and incoming revenues from ticket sales and other consumer purchases. The same is true of TV sports broadcasts, art exhibitions, and even grassroots crowdfunding efforts.

10. It’s one of the easiest ways to prove niche expertise. One of the hottest forms of advertising that is happening today is the whitepaper, ebook, or article that is allowed to be downloaded for free. This information creates evidence in the minds of B2B and B2C prospects that proves a business has expertise that can create value. Hard evidence is much more influential than manipulated advertising images or slogans that are designed to keep a brand at the top of a prospect’s mind.

11. Social and moral issues can be promoted with ease. Public advertising campaigns can help to bring more awareness to certain societal issues, such as bullying or homelessness, that may not otherwise be obtained through other sources. These public campaigns may have a cost to them from a production standpoint, but because they spur local actions and support, the value comes back around over time and everyone benefits from it.

12. It inspires people. Advertising can stir the human soul and imagination to create real inspiration that benefits the world. The “God made a farmer” advertisement from Dodge, featuring Paul Harvey, is a classic example of this. Aired during the 2013 Super Bowl, it was 2 minutes of inspiration for America’s Heartland that still has people talking. Yet at the end of the commercial, one simple sentence of six words connected the advertisement to everyone: “To the farmer in all of us.”

The Cons of Advertising

1. It costs time and money. Advertising doesn’t come cheap. It will always cost time, money, or both to complete successfully. It may not cost someone anything to create a video, but they’ll be spending time editing the content of it, use resources to upload it, and spend time responding to comments about it. This means every business must find some way to make sure there is time or money budgeted for advertising so there aren’t any unhealthy surprises that come along. When money is tight, this naturally limits advertising options and that means growth options are limited as well.

2. Messages get lost in the white noise of information overload. People today spend less than 5 seconds analyzing data to determine if it is worthy of consumption. If it passes the test, then it will be consumed. If not, then it will simply blend in with the rest of the white noise that occurs on the internet every day. It is very easy for an advertising message to get lost because it doesn’t properly communicate value. Something as simple as a sentence being too long or a word being unknown to a viewer can be enough to cause prospects to turn away.

3. Results are never guaranteed. It is entirely possible for a business to spend $1 million on advertising and get $0 in return. The results of an advertising campaign are never guaranteed. This is why so much research goes into demographic research so that problems can be identified and solved by the products that a brand represents. As long as there is some sort of valid value proposition, there will always be some sort of return. Even then, however that $1 million campaign could bring a return of just $1.

4. There are a ridiculous amount of platforms that accept advertising. Which platform a targeted demographic prefers to receive their advertising on can be just as costly and time consuming as the creation of the advertising campaign itself. From billboards to radio, TV to the internet, there are literally hundreds of ways that a business could spend their advertising budget. Although this means brand saturation is easier to achieve, it also means that being completely ignored happens more often as well.

5. It is difficult to stay unique with today’s information-sharing world. Because an advertising campaign can go global in a matter of minutes [or even seconds] on the modern internet, it is very difficult for a business to be able to stay unique. Successful advertising campaigns can be copied by others so that the successes can be replicated. This requires a business to be continually innovating, creating, and find new approaches in order to provide a unique message.

6. Advertising is often associated with media. Advertising is how most people today receive their media, even if that is from an online source. Two out of three internet users say that there are willing to be exposed to higher levels of advertising just so they can receive more information that can be freely consumed. This still happens in the print world as well since advertising reduces the subscription prices of newspapers or magazines by 50% or more.

7. It is very easy for the wrong message to be consumed. Budweiser discovered this disadvantage of advertising in April 2015 during the next phase of their Up For Whatever ongoing campaign. A slogan was printed on the label of Bud Light bottles that said “The perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night.” The intent was to have people be “up for whatever,” like table tennis with Arnold Schwarzenegger or playing real life Pac-Man. The problem was that many consumers say this message as promoting rape culture and the backlash against the slogan caused negative publicity for Budweiser instead of a positive campaign.

8. Advertising always impacts someone in some way. Every advertisement that someone views will have either a positive or negative impact on them. Those impacts might be slight, but they could be very large impacts as well. Imagine a recovering alcoholic being exposed to several commercials for beer, wine, and spirits or kids being exposed to product commercials for 5 minutes straight during their favorite cartoon – both instances that happen with regularity. Because there is no way to control how advertising impacts people on the individual level, businesses are forced to hope that the positives outweigh the negatives.

9. It’s a general nuisance. Excessive advertising might have a positive effect on the economy, but it tends to have a negative effect on consumers when the same type of advertising happens over and over again. This is especially true during election cycles when political advertising takes over the landscape. Hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising may be spent on a single election, exposing people to competing messages that get repetitive and irritating when they are seen several times per hour.

10. The intended targets of the advertising campaign may never see it. The goal of advertising is to reach a specific demographic at a specific time. The only problem is that even with comprehensive research guiding the way, viewing hours are subject to change at any given time. Someone might decide they’ve had enough of the internet and don’t log into social networking sites for a month. A flat tire keeps someone away from the TV at the targeted time they’d normally be watching it. A desired moment of silence causes someone to turn their radio off. Everything can be done correctly, but “fate” can still intervene and create a missed message.

11. Product placements can ruin personal enjoyment. There are some iconic brand placements that have happened over the years. Remember Superman crashing through the giant Coca-Cola billboard? There are also some ridiculous product placements that have ruined experiences for people. Remember the gourmet food enjoyed in Demolition Man at Taco Bell? Product placement could be a $50 billion industry in 2015 and helps to fund entertainment options, but it can be sometimes too aggressive and create a negative effect.

12. It isn’t always ethical. Kids under the age of 8 are susceptible to believing everything they see on TV. If a product says it is the best ever created, kids are going to believe it. If someone is hungry and they see a picture of pizza, burgers, or unhealthy food options that they are craving, then they’ll often decide on the unhealthy food instead of making something healthier at home. By its nature, advertising isn’t always ethical because it is attempting to influence purchasing decisions so that people spend money they weren’t intending to spend.

Advertising is a Necessity in the Modern World.

Businesses will need to segment 10 billion people by 2050 and that requires them to stand out in a unique way today. By evaluating the pros and cons of advertising, more effective campaigns can be created. That will not only lead to eventual profitability if managed correctly, but it will also help the economy so that everyone has a little more to spend.

What is social media essay, how do you write a social media essay, structure of social media essay, various tones of a social media essay, incorporate an attractive topic.

As you know, an social media essay is a piece of writing that is used to introduce an essential topic to the world with its underlying advantages and disadvantages. These aspects are driven solely by facts and should not contain the opinions of the writers. It is drafted to give others a better understanding of the subject in hand.

No matter which subject it pertains to, an essay ends with a conclusion where the writers are permitted to give their opinion after weighing the advantages and disadvantages.

Similarly, a social media essay is written to appreciate the positive aspects and highlight the negative impacts of social media in this time and day. The conclusions include the analysis of the two elements by the writers in their own lives and give an open-ended point of view. Depending upon the essay writer or paper writing service , the decision can be decisive, too, but that is not encouraged.

Today, the use of social networks, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, or LinkedIn, has increased exponentially. An average millennial spends 2 hours and 58 minutes per day on social media platforms like Facebook. While some say that the platform is super-informative, others argue that all the information gathered on this platform is trivial and doesn't justify long hours invested in the use of social media.

The above arguments make using social media by individuals with a debatable issue, and this is why a lot of students are required to write an essay on social media. So, here are some incredible tips to help you out in writing an essay on social media even if you don't have marketing skills .

A classic essay consists of 3 parts – the introduction, main body, and the conclusion.

  • The Introduction

As you introduce the main topic, always begin with how it is relevant to the current scenario. You can do this by providing some background information. The information can be made richer by adding some reliable stats and data . Once you have established the topic, you need to give a strong thesis statement of the hypothesis on which your essay is based.

The thesis statement in your essay should be precise and debatable. If not, the arguments that you are going to put forward in the essay would make no sense.

The main body of your text should consist of logical arguments in relevance to your hypothesis. Make sure you put forward one statement in one paragraph and start a new one with another section. This will make your essay look more organized.

Also, when developing ideas, only include the ones you can write clearly about. If not, avoid them. Make sure that the essay develops coherently.

To conclude the essay about social media, bring back your hypothesis, and state how the aspects you discussed earlier support or nullify it. Make it a point to summarize all ideas, but do not start adding more ideas when you are about to conclude. You can now give an, ideally, open end to your essay.

A great conclusion is the one that provokes thought and will make your readers question the use of social media in their everyday lives.

Also, remember that essays do not have to include pros and cons always. They can either be full of pros or cons or both, depending upon your hypothesis. Just ensure they are relevant.

You might believe that an essay is an essay, and two of them would be similar, but that's a misconception. Different essays have varying tones depending on how the author is treating the thesis statement through the main body of the text. Here are a few examples of essays on social media in different tones.

  • Sample of a Persuasive Essay

If you are asked to write an academic paper about the effects of social media on the mental health of teenagers and young adults, you should make it persuasive. For this, just writing about the topic is not enough. It would help if you had an impactful thesis, followed by powerful arguments to support or question your theory.

The perils associated with social media addiction are forcing parents and "grown-ups" to throw their benefits in bad light today. In the race to become best in academics and non-academic activities, people are losing their grip on how social networks bring people together. They empower individuals with knowledge about various cultures and languages, which might not have been possible otherwise.

Social media sites can be addictive, and students might waste their formative years scrolling through the trivial feed and gain nothing but superficial knowledge. But that is just because neither parents nor the school is encouraging positive social media behavior. If these institutions start offering tips to students to limit and utilize their time on social media , one would be amazed to see their achievements.

Is social media a catalyst for the downfall of student life? Well, social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and more are teeming with inspirational achievers and content creators who go the extra mile to share their stories and inspire students. If the children are taught to see their access to social media as an opportunity to grow rather than a competition for likes and followers, they are bound to work harder and achieve goals that seemed insurmountable earlier.

  • Sample of Negative Essay about social media

If you have been asked to highlight the negative aspects of social media, your teacher does not mean that you have to cross all limits to present the use of social media in a bad light. Instead, what they are asking for is some logical and believable arguments that tell us why social media is harmful to society.

Social media is destroying family links by creating a virtual shell for each individual, which dissociates them with their own parents and siblings. The kids are adversely affected by increased access to social media if parents are always indulged in their devices and ignore them. Eventually, even kids start using tools to connect to other people, ignoring their family members.

Since kids and teenagers are the most impressionable age groups, they start believing that everything that glitters on social media platforms is gold, and they become materialistic. Their lives start revolving around likes, comments, and followers/subscribers. No matter whether their minds are prepared for such exposure or not, social media exposes them to the best and the worst about this world, which might turn them into rebels. They start valuing their online friends more than their offline lives and go to unimaginable extents to keep them entertained.

So, parents and elders need to pay attention to their children and limit their social media use so that they can learn to form real relationships and values.

  • Weighing the pros and cons

Another way in which you can present your social media essay is by comparing the positive and negative aspects associated with it. In such essays, the conclusion is better left open for the readers to decide their own take on social media.

One cannot argue that social media has taken the world by storm by allowing like-minded individuals to connect and share their experiences with the world. You can use these platforms to make new friends and discover the ones who have lost touch. You can talk to everyone on your friend list and share your content on these channels to become a part of the creators' community. There is no dearth for talent on social media and its admirers.

On the other hand, if you use social media sites for long stretches of time in one go, you run the risk of addiction. Gradually, a social media addict starts to build a cocoon for themselves, which they find hard to step out of. This leads to a disconnect between you and the family you already have and love. One might feel too confined yet comfortable in their space that they have no urge left to step out, pushing them towards social seclusion, or worse – depression.

When you flip the coin again, you will discover that social media has become an incredible platform for small businesses to grow and earn good profits . The grass-root companies do not have to invest much for advertising and promotion or even own an establishment. All they have to do is to create a grassroots marketing strategy for themselves, and their brand will start selling in no time!

In the end, social media is a game-changer on the World Wide Web. It allows people to connect with the virtual world with the risk of disconnecting with the real world. Then again, businesses are doing well on these platforms. There are indeed two sides to social media, one positive and another negative, and it is up to you which one you lean towards more.

  • Argumentative social media essay

A challenging but equally exciting type of essay on social media you should know about is an argumentative essay. It is often written when you are tasked with altering the point of view of the reader, which is of a completely opposite belief. Here is a sample for your better understanding.

Social networks have an uncertain future with the string impression they leave on users, especially the younger generations. Parents panic with the first mention of social media sites by their children and learning about their presence on these platforms because they are afraid of cyberbullying. They do not want their children to get cat-fished by some stranger on Reddit when they are not around.

Moreover, social media platforms are the reason why several individuals are losing their confidential data every day to corporate houses. These businesses are using the information to bug users with ads about stuff they do not want to buy.

If such instances carry on, the day is not far when the government will start to keep checks on the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other channels. Massive surveillance will be imposed on these sites to prevent malicious minds from harming innocent teenagers physically or by hacking into their systems. So, before you get a chance to ask " have I been hacked ", know that someone is taking care of it.

Having an attractive topic for your social media essay does not mean using poetic words in it. You should have an issue relevant to the current scenario. In the process of selecting a fascinating topic, do not forget to keep it within the extents of your knowledge. If it becomes too complicated for you to write about, you will be stuck when coming up with arguments and ideas.

The perfect topic would be the one which offers good potential for research and is interesting for the readers too. Even if you present profound arguments about such topics, they should be in a logical, comprehensible, and readable format for people to understand easily.

Writing a social media essay is no cakewalk, whether you are a high-school student or university student. All you need to do is, structuralize it properly, be clear with the ideas and arguments you are planning to present, pick the tone of your essay, and began writing. Do not forget to top your essay up with a catchy topic so that your entire hard work doesn't fall flat.
