Portraits of a graduating class

A roundup of 12 undergraduate and graduate student profiles who made the most of their years at penn and made a mark on the community..

For the graduating Class of 2024 , an undercurrent of resilience and adaptability is a throughline in the journey to Commencement. On the Class of 2024 page , Penn Today has highlighted the achievements and hard work of many undergraduate and graduate students throughout the 2023-24 academic year. From student-athletes to community advocates, innovators and educators, what unites this mix of students is how they made the most of what Penn has to offer, and gave back to the Penn community in turn.

Trevian AMbroise.

Trevian Ambroise finished his final year as a graduate student in the Stuart Weitzman School of Design while serving as a graduate student ambassador, and learning not just from Penn but the city of Philadelphia as an ideal place for studying economic development techniques to become a well-rounded planner. The fourth-year distance swimmer Anna Kalandadze is graduating with a degree in biology and environmental science. The champion swimmer hopes to stick to the water and pursue marine biology, specifically coral ecology. Chandler McClesky experienced the best of both worlds as a student and teaching assistant, learning from professors while honing his own understanding of business communication. Two Penn Carey Law students capped the last semester of their law school journey winning the 2024 Thurgood Marshall Moot Court regionals.

Janice Kim.

Janice Kim will graduate as the first Penn student to have a dual degree in computer science and design. Jordan Obi served as Penn women’s basketball’s “quiet leader.” Zach Koung , who seeks better conversations across differences, says “conversations that don’t leave people feeling isolated, but instead leave people feeling seen.” Toby Johnson, Vicki Swanson, and Hongyang Zhao are getting their graduate degrees from the Graduate School of Education, and spent their time at Penn with the community’s youngest learners through partnerships with elementary schools in West Philadelphia.

 oulaya-louaddi

Oulaya Louaddi served as president of Minorities in Nursing Organization, advocating for fellow Middle Eastern and North African students. Deborah Olatunji began as a nursing major, and during her four years pushed herself outside of her comfort zone by taking classes in disciplines outside of nursing, switched to psychology and started a podcast. Amanda Yagerman is graduating with a degree in history and English and, in graduating the Navy ROTC program, she says “I get to enter the military as an officer.” The ROTC program also paid her tuition in full. Victor Ayeni , a big proponent of community engagement, became involved with Penn Medicine outreach groups like the “Cut Hypertension” program, which provides blood pressure screenings to increase community awareness about hypertension, especially among Black men in whom it is prevalent. On Match Day, he and the graduating class in Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine opened their letters to find at which schools, and in which cities, their next journey would be.

Picturing artistic pursuits

Hundreds of undergraduates take classes in the fine arts each semester, among them painting and drawing, ceramics and sculpture, printmaking and animation, photography and videography. The courses, through the School of Arts & Sciences and the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in an art form in a collaborative way.

‘The Illuminated Body’ fuses color, light, and sound

A new Arthur Ross Gallery exhibition of work by artist Barbara Earl Thomas features cut-paper portraits reminiscent of stained glass and an immersive installation constructed with intricately cut material lit from behind.

I'm a recent college graduate. No one told me it would be this hard to make ends meet.

  • After graduating college, I couldn't get a full-time job, so I am working several part-time gigs.
  • I am frustrated because I didn't know it would be this hard to make ends meet after college.
  • I am trying to look on the bright side and understand that I am learning financial lessons.

Insider Today

After the initial thrill and excitement of graduation wore off, the first few months as a recent college graduate were quickly followed by a blur of job applications, rejections, and figuring out budgeting basics.

I quickly realized that the financial independence I longed for now seemed like a far-off dream.

On the one hand, I gained my independence, but on the other, I now had to navigate issues like rent, groceries, and basic utilities. But since I couldn't land a full-time job in my desired field — as a biotechnologist — I struggled to make ends meet.

I realized I had a lot to learn.

I couldn't get a full-time job, so I struggled to make ends meet

I rarely considered the comfort and stability that being in college had provided. While in school, I could always rely on my family — and even friends — to quickly jump in to support me if I needed financial help . But soon after graduation, I realized I was on my own. I had to quickly understand that the support I once enjoyed had finally dwindled.

The possibility of getting a full-time job seemed almost impossible, so I had to take what was available. I took any odd job: I waited tables, babysat, and even became a part-time receptionist at a hotel.

With the measly paychecks I got, I then had to figure out how to negotiate between my needs and wants. I had to plan every single bit of my income and spending.

Related stories

I remember sitting in bed , surrounded by bills and a spreadsheet that refused to balance. The uncorrelated numbers on my spreadsheet were a stark reminder that my survival jobs weren't cutting it. My pay barely covered what I needed monthly.

That's when I decided I needed at least two part-time jobs to cover my basic needs.

I don't understand how I got here

In the midst of all that was happening, I couldn't quite get my head around the fact that I couldn't secure a future or land a job. I went to college and followed every step I needed to; my future felt like a guarantee. But I'm realizing I was wrong.

I felt like a failure for not being able to get a job, and I also felt let down by the system.

But I am trying to look on the bright side. Learning to manage my finances at such a young age has taught me invaluable lessons. The challenge of having every penny already spent before receiving the paycheck makes saving an impossible but interesting task. I am learning how to save money and how far a dollar can truly go. I am becoming stronger and wiser through this process.

I am still looking to the future

It's been a year since I graduated. Though I am still looking for a full-time job and struggling to make ends meet, I try to remind myself that this is just a phase in a tough labor market . It will just take some patience and practice.

But while I wait for that to happen, I am quickly learning to adapt to my reality and figure it out one day at a time.

I hope that one day, I will look back at these struggles as the foundation of my financial wisdom. The lessons taught me not just how to survive but how to thrive.

Liberty graduate completes bachelor’s degree at age 15

May 14, 2024 : By Christian Shields - Office of Communications & Public Engagement

While many young people her age have just started researching colleges and planning campus visits, recent Liberty University graduate Abigail Lee has turned her tassel and is preparing for graduate school.

Abigail, who turned 16 in April, completed her B.S. in Psychology in December at the age of 15, becoming one of the youngest graduates to earn a bachelor’s degree this academic year. She traveled with her family from Los Angeles to Lynchburg last week to participate in Commencement .

phd graduation icon

Abigail’s time with Liberty actually began in middle school when her parents enrolled her in Liberty University Online Academy , a fully accredited K-12 online education program, after moving from Asia to California in 2020. She had previously attended a public elementary school but her parents decided to place her and her older brother in a school setting that better highlighted their individual academic strengths. When schools changed to virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it was an added incentive for the Lees to pursue an online education for their children.

“From a parent’s perspective, the ability to be asynchronous and vertically approach different subjects so that child is able to move at his or her own pace in an optimal level instead of starting and finishing all of your classes at once, really helped a lot,” said Abigail’s father, Jong Lee. “Our children really flourished in this online and flexible environment, and I think they were able to be much more efficient with their studies than they would have been stuck in a classroom, leaving more time for extracurricular pursuits.”

Abigail finished high school with LUOA in 2021 and enrolled in Liberty University’s Online Programs to study psychology.

“I was kind of questioning going into psychology when I first chose it because I wasn’t sure how my faith would fit into what I was learning,” Lee said. “(Being at Liberty), I didn’t have to just fend for myself and research everything by myself but had a curriculum that actually incorporated a Christian perspective. It wasn’t just entirely (faith-based) or entirely secular. It integrated Christian views with science.”

Despite being much younger than the typical college student, Abigail excelled in her classes and fell in love with the field of psychology. Although she did not have all the life experience and application knowledge that some of her classmates did, she was still able to relate her studies to her current life.

“Ironically, taking psychology courses like behavior modification and adolescent psychology allowed me to have much greater current insight and the courses were actually helpful to me personally,” Abigail said. “I can say that my Liberty University professors were all very supportive and understanding and I will be eternally grateful to them.”

“She found the subject matter really interesting,” Jong Lee added. “It was self-driven, and she had a lot of flexibility to pick her courses and the sequence. I don’t think it was a function of us trying to push her to accomplish anything quickly. We just didn’t want to be in a position where we were holding her back.”

Abigail has been accepted into Johns Hopkins University where she will begin her graduate studies on data analytics and policy. She hopes to one day work in psychology research.

phd graduation icon

That self-driven character runs in the family. Her older brother, Isaac, graduated with his M.A. in Theological Studies from Liberty’s Online Programs in December after earning a master’s degree from Columbia University last May and bachelor’s degrees from Liberty in both History and Religion in 2022 at the age of 16. He plans to compete his Master of Divinity (M.Div.) through Liberty this fall before pursuing his Ph.D. in Education at the University of Cambridge.

The Lees said Liberty has been a blessing for the family and may be for any other families looking for a high-quality Christian education.

“Liberty’s authentically Christ-centered pedagogical philosophy and embrace of academic excellence during such uncertain times has made a profound difference in the lives of our children and family,” said Sonia Lee, Abigail’s and Isaac’s mother. “We could not be more grateful and enthusiastic about recommending other families to consider Liberty University.”

“I encourage people to take advantage of Liberty and all the resources that are available,” Abigail added. “There are so many courses available at Liberty, even just for an online option. Don’t limit yourself and keep going.”
