The Art of Crafting a Personal Statement: Your Key to Standing Out

In the world of applications, be it for college, graduate school, a scholarship, or even a new job, one thing remains constant – the importance of a personal statement. Think of a personal statement as a written elevator pitch. It’s your chance to introduce yourself to the committee or employer, showcasing not just what you’ve accomplished but who you are and what you aspire to become. A personal statement is a narrative that tells your story, one that can’t be found in your resume, your grades, or your portfolio. It’s about making a connection, showing your human side, and leaving a lasting impression.

What Exactly is a Personal Statement?

In the simplest terms, a personal statement is a self-reflective article that offers insight into an individual’s personality, goals, influences, challenges, triumphs, life experiences, or lessons learned. It’s often a key component of an application process and is your chance to go beyond the numbers and statistics to convey your passion, drive, and enthusiasm.

When it comes to applying for a job, a college, or a scholarship, there’s one component that often causes applicants the most stress: the personal statement. This vital piece of writing is more than just a formality; it’s a window into who you are, a platform to stand out from the crowd, and a chance to persuade decision-makers that you’re the best fit for the opportunity at hand. But what exactly is a personal statement and how can you craft one that will make a lasting impression? Let’s delve into the world of personal statements and uncover the secrets to crafting a statement that speaks volumes about your unique personal journey.

A personal statement is a written description of your abilities, achievements, interests, and aspirations, typically required by universities, potential employers, and grant committees. In essence, it’s a narrative that tells a story about you – not just what you have done, but who you are. Unlike a resume, which is a formal, bulleted list of your qualifications, a personal statement provides context and personality to your experiences.

The Purpose of a Personal Statement

The aim of a personal statement is multifaceted. At its core, it serves to:

Highlight your motivations and passion in your field of interest.

Demonstrate key soft and hard skills through personal anecdotes.

Showcase your writing ability, as it reflects your communication skills, which are crucial in any field.

Set you apart from other candidates by showing your unique perspective.

Give insight into your character and maturity.

Knowing Your Audience

Before you start typing away, it’s essential to understand who will be reading your personal statement. Whether it’s an admissions tutor at a university or a hiring manager at a corporation, your audience is looking to learn more about you as an individual. They’re seeking authenticity, so your statement should reflect your genuine interests and personality.

Structuring Your Personal Statement

While the content of your personal statement is of paramount importance, how you structure it can also make a significant difference. A well-organized statement will guide the reader through your story logically and compellingly. Here’s a basic structure to get you started:

Introduction

Begin with a powerful opening that grabs attention. This could be an anecdote, a bold statement, or a question that reflects your passion or motivation for your chosen field.

Divide the body into paragraphs, each focusing on different aspects of your experiences, skills, and ambitions. Use specific examples to illustrate your points, and reflect on what these experiences have taught you.

Tie everything together with a strong conclusion that reaffirms your interest and leaves the reader with a memorable closing thought.

Writing With Clarity and Style

Your personal statement should be reflective of your best writing. It requires meticulous crafting to ensure that it is clear, concise, and free from clichés. Here are some tips to help you write effectively:

Be Specific : Rather than making broad statements, use specific examples to illustrate your points. This grounds your writing in reality and provides a concrete picture of your achievements and aspirations.

Maintain Focus : Your statement should be focused on the opportunity you’re seeking. If you’re applying for a biology program, for example, showcase experiences and interests related to biology.

Avoid Jargon and Slang : Keep your language accessible to a broad audience, avoiding overly technical terms or colloquialisms.

Be Honest : Don’t exaggerate or lie about your experiences. Admissions officers and employers can often spot inauthenticity.

Proofread : A statement riddled with grammatical errors can severely undermine your credibility. Revise your statement several times and have someone else review it as well.

Making It Personal

This is your “personal” statement, after all, so it’s important to reflect upon what sets you apart from other candidates. How have your experiences shaped you? What challenges have you overcome? How does your background influence your outlook? Delve into these questions to provide a rich, nuanced portrait of yourself.

Addressing Gaps or Weak Spots

If there are any potential red flags in your application, such as gaps in your education or employment history, the personal statement is a chance to address them directly. Give a brief, honest explanation and focus on the positive, such as what you learned during that time.

Keeping It Appropriate

Remember that a personal statement, while personal, is still a professional document. Maintain a tone that is confident, but not arrogant; personal, but not overly informal. Keep the content relevant to the opportunity you’re pursuing – this isn’t the place for random musings or overly intimate revelations.

Sticking to the Word Limit

Many personal statements come with a word limit. Adhering to this limit is both a challenge and a necessity. It forces you to be concise and to prioritize the most important aspects of your story.

The Impact of a Well-Crafted Personal Statement

A compelling personal statement can be the deciding factor that tips the scales in your favor. In a pool of similarly qualified candidates, your personal story, told well, can resonate with the reader and distinguish you as a memorable and desirable candidate.

Final Thoughts

Writing a personal statement is an exercise in introspection and self-promotion. It requires you to dig deep and present yourself in a way that is both honest and engaging. By following these guidelines and imbuing your statement with your unique voice and experience, you’ll create a document that not only meets the formal requirements but truly represents who you are and what you stand for. It’s your opportunity to turn a simple application into a profound, personal expression, and with the right approach, it can become the very key that unlocks the doors to your future.

How to Write a Personal Statement with AI

A graduate degree can help you advance in your career by adding qualifications and credentials. Besides that, it can also help you enhance your knowledge in whatever field you’re in.

What you’ll need when applying for graduate school:

  • Undergraduate transcript
  • Standardized test scores
  • Recommendation letters
  • A personal statement

In this comprehensive guide, you’ll learn how to write a personal statement for graduate school.

What’s the Purpose of a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is what helps you introduce yourself to a selection board or committee. It helps them determine whether you deserve an interview. If they do invite you, they’ll base their interview questions on this personal statement.

What Makes a Great Personal Statement?

A great personal statement is one that focuses on you and not what you’ve accomplished. The selection board is usually interested in how those accomplishments have influenced your intellectual development and perspective.

A strong personal statement will also showcase your excitement and motivation to take on the new journey. This is something selection committees look for because they understand how stressful and challenging graduate life can be.

How is a Personal Statement Different from a Statement of Intent?

A statement of intent is more like a cover letter. It is a formal statement you ideally address to a selection committee regarding your application. A statement of intent or interest for graduate school is to offer an overview of all your accomplishments and goals.

On the other hand, a personal statement is more like an essay rather than a letter. It is meant to showcase who the applicant is on a personal level, and why you make a good fit for the graduate school. A personal statement basically speaks to what the applicant wants to pursue and why.

Goals of a Personal Statement

A personal statement is an applicant’s primary writing sample. It helps demonstrate the writing ability of the applicant on a more personal level.

The goals of a personal statement are to:

Tell Your Story

This is where you should tell your story and show how your unique experiences and qualities have affected your intellectual development and perspective. Focus on subject matters and topics that are special to you.

This is basically a personal essay, so it should be able to provide the selection committee with a picture of who you really are.

Demonstrating Your Fit with the Program or Field

You need to give persuasive and rational reasons why you’re a great fit for the graduate program. Demonstrate how the graduate program structure will allow you to concentrate on particular topics..

Highlighting Your Goals and Aspirations

Highlight your experiences and aspirations related to what you’re trying to study. Try to remain as relevant as possible. Find interesting ways to emphasize your uniqueness. Talking about the obstacles you’ve overcome and problems you’ve solved is always a good idea.

How to Write A Personal Statement for Grad School

Here are some of the tips and tricks you can use to get your personal statement to the top of the list.

Researching the Program’s Requirements

Find out things like whether there’s a specific format you need to follow when writing your personal statement. You need to research the whole program and understand its core priorities and values.

Some graduate institutions will even provide candidates with prompts they can use, for example, “Write about the accomplishment you’re proudest of?”

Crafting a Strong Opening

You want to start strong and draw in the reader immediately. This is common in most great pieces of writing. Make sure to have an introduction that’s both captivating and strong. This will help excite the reader about what’s to follow and will encourage them to read the essay with an open and positive mind.

Regarding personal statements, the first paragraph should always relate the graduate program to your own ideas and experiences. Be crystal clear about why you’re interested in the program and why your goals and aspirations help make you a great fit.

Ending with a Strong Conclusion

Just like how you should start, you should also end the statement with a strong conclusion. The conclusion might just be the last time they’ll be reading or hearing about you as a person and why you’d make a good student.

The conclusion should be as engaging and captivating as the introduction. Use the ending to highlight all the important points you wrote in the essay.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Different Applications

You can use a personal statement for many other things besides graduate school. Here’s how to write personal statements for different applications.

How to Write a Personal Statement for a Job?

When it comes to writing a personal statement for a job, it’s all about selling yourself and what makes you better than all the other candidates. In this statement, you’ll need to highlight your skills and competencies, and show how they’ll make you a positive addition to the team.

How to Write a Personal Statement for University?

A personal statement for a university is usually around 4000 – 5000 characters, so you need to grab the admissions from the start. You need to choose your words wisely all throughout the statement. Be bold and highlight all your best achievements and link them to how they make you a great fit with the institution.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Financial Aid Appeal?

Ensure the essay follows a logical structure. Try to consider how it sounds to a reader who does not know you. Also, be careful with clichés and humor. This is not the time to be funny. Money matters are often more serious affairs.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Research Programs?

In this personal statement, you’re going to have to show the reader why you want this specific topic of research. You’ll have to find ways to explain to them the aspects of the research topic that interests you so much. Highlight the abilities and skills you have that are relevant to the topic.

How to Write a Personal Statement for Study Abroad Programs?

Here you’ll have to specify why you want to study abroad. This personal statement should be all about why studying abroad will be more advantageous and why you think this arrangement would be the best fit for both you and the school. Talk about your career goals and how starting abroad will positively impact your career trajectory.

How to Format a Personal Statement?

The best way to go about formatting is by starting with an outline. Drafting an outline first will help you organize your ideas.

Personal Statement Outline

Personal statements usually have a pretty basic outline. In fact, it has the same structure as the essays one writes in high school. A personal statement should have the:

  • Introduction – This should be a few sentences to a paragraph. It’s an overview of what the reader should expect.
  • Body – This part usually has around two to five paragraphs, which should have a logical sequence. Each paragraph should flow naturally from one to the other. Each should start with a “topic sentence.”
  • Conclusion – The conclusion should highlight and bring together your most important points. You should clearly make your argument and show the reader what you want them to leave with.

Tips for Making Your Personal Statement Visually Appealing

Here are some of the ways you can make your personal statement more visually appealing.

  • Summarizing your career trajectory. Write a summary of your past, present and potential future. This will help draw in the reader more.
  • Use “first person” language. Speak to the reader clearly and directly through the personal statement.
  • Yes, the personal statement is all about you, but avoid using “I” too much.
  • Don’t be too boastful or modest. Let your facts speak for themselves.
  • Don’t make your paragraphs too long. Paragraphs that are short and sweet are something most readers appreciate.
  • Have a clear format you can follow from start to finish.

How Long is a Personal Statement?

While every graduate institution will have its own set of rules and regulations, a personal statement for graduate school should generally fall between 500 and 1500 words. This is approximately one to one and a half pages.

With that said, it’s important to check whether the school has specific requirements. If so, it’s important to follow these length guidelines because it could cost you your admission. Make sure you cover all your key points while staying within length guidelines.

What Topics Can I Write About? Here Are a Few Questions You Can Answer to Get Started

There are many things you can focus on when writing a personal statement. Here are some of the things you should ask yourself to help you get topics for your personal statement:

  • Who/what have been your intellectual influences?
  • What led you to choose your academic field or career path?
  • What relevant academic, research or work experience do you have?

Some Graduate School Personal Statement Examples

The most common personal statements for graduate school:

Personal Statement for Law School

Personal statements for law schools act as the proxies for interviews. This is the only chance the selection board can get a chance to know the real you before they invite you for an interview. You need to be personal and show what makes you the best fit.

Personal Statement for Medical School

In this statement, you want to show that you have a genuine interest to study medicine and what motivated you to want to join this noble profession. Highlight both your strengths and weaknesses, and show why they’ll help make you a great doctor.

Personal Statement for Nursing School

Just like with medical school, this statement should show why you want to study nursing. Explain to the selection committee why you’re best suited to becoming a nurse.

Personal Statement for Residency

Should You Use AI to Write Your Personal Statement? Pt. 2

personal statements ai

In Part 1 of this series, I explored AI’s effectiveness in helping a student generate ideas and organize their personal statement (using medical school as an example).

I even asked ChatGPT to create an initial draft of the personal statement based on its advice.

Make sure to check out Part 1 to see how I graded AI’s performance for the brainstorming and outlining steps in the writing process.

Today, I want to move on to the challenge of writing introductory paragraphs, or “hooks,” to see how well AI can assist students with this challenge.

Part 2: Is AI Useful for Writing a Hook / Introduction in a Personal Statement?

After reading the rough draft that the AI produced, I felt pretty unsatisfied with the introductory paragraph, which felt pretty generic and forgettable:

Title: A Journey Through Service and Science: My Path to Medicine

Introduction: The Spark of Inspiration

My journey into the world of medicine began in an unexpected place: the bustling emergency department of City Hospital. As an Emergency Department Scribe, I witnessed the confluence of science, empathy, and urgency. It was here, amidst the controlled chaos, that I discovered my calling to become a physician, one who not only heals but also connects with patients on a human level.

There are small problems, such as needlessly fancy diction like “confluence” and super cliche phrases like “my calling,” but the main issue here is the lack of an attention-grabbing story.

So, I figured I would try to prompt the AI again to see if it could improve the opener:

Can you revise the first paragraph to make it an attention-grabbing story about a specific patient I helped in the Emergency Department?

(NOTE: it’s funny that this was ChatGPT’s initial advice anyway in Part 1 , but for some reason it failed to follow that advice without further prompting from me)

Introduction: A Moment of Clarity in the Emergency Department

My initiation into the world of medicine occurred not through textbooks or lectures, but in the bustling emergency department of City Hospital, amidst a night that I will never forget. I was working as a scribe when a young man, barely in his twenties, was rushed in following a severe motorbike accident. As I meticulously documented the medical team’s actions, something beyond the flurry of medical interventions caught my attention. It was the patient's eyes, wide with fear and confusion, silently pleading for understanding and reassurance amidst the chaos. In that critical moment, as I held his hand while the doctors worked to stabilize him, I realized my calling. Medicine, to me, became more than a profession; it was a commitment to being there for others in their most vulnerable moments, offering not just clinical skills but also compassion and hope.

This is definitely better than the original. And it’s technically sound. Pretty decent for not having a ton of information. But altogether it’s still pretty cliche.

The main issues here are a lack of memorability and a vagueness about how the student actually helped the patient (beyond mere documentation).

But perhaps this AI-generated hook would remind the student of some actual cases they encountered? Perhaps it could spark a memory of a specific patient interaction?

Let’s prompt the AI even more to try and make this better:

Can you revise the first paragraph again to include some dialogue between myself and the patient to show my empathy and my ability to use our common background to help him calm down? Can you also add a few sentences about how I helped the patient’s family? Can you also include details about the patient’s medical history to add more context and further dramatize the story?

Introduction: A Night of Compassion and Connection in the Emergency Department

On a particularly hectic night in the emergency department of City Hospital, as an Emergency Department Scribe, I encountered a situation that profoundly shaped my perspective on medicine. A young man, John, was wheeled in, severely injured from a motorbike accident. His medical history was complex, including a recent battle with pneumonia and a long-standing struggle with diabetes, which heightened the urgency of his condition. As doctors swirled around him, I noticed John's eyes flickering with fear and confusion.

“Hey John, I’m here to help,” I said gently, noting the motorcycle keychain in his hand – a small detail connecting us, as I too was an avid motorcyclist. “I’ve been on that road too, it can be tough, but you’re in good hands.”

His grip tightened around the keychain as he muttered, “It happened so fast. I'm scared.”

I stayed by his side, offering reassurances in a calm, steady voice, bridging the gap between a patient in distress and the medical team's focused urgency. This brief exchange not only helped calm John but also allowed the medical staff to work more effectively.

Meanwhile, John’s family arrived, visibly distressed. I stepped out to meet them, providing updates and answering their questions with sensitivity and clarity. My efforts to keep them informed and comforted during those tense moments were met with deep gratitude, further highlighting the integral role of empathy and communication in patient care.

The hook / introduction is getting a little bit better each time we prompt it, but I think most people would argue that this version is overly sentimental and a bit unbelievable.

Ultimately, I think this exercise is illustrating some of ChatGPT’s strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths: format, structure, transitions, exposition

Weaknesses: narrative, originality, voice

And this makes sense. The AI is drawing on every example of a personal statement it can find on the internet and synthesizing all those essays and associated advice into a single essay.

So, AI is going to thrive in organization/structure and more “telling statements” that summarize the main points. On the other hand, it’s going to flounder in the more creative tasks that make a personal statement original, authentic, and individualized.

At best, these hooks/introductions the AI produced would give the student a template/structure they could further personalize themselves through more accurate details and authentic voice.

Harkening back to Part 1 of this series, I feel that the AI chose the wrong experience to focus on in the introduction. It took the most straightforward route in selecting the emergency department scribe position for the opener, which makes logical sense for a medical school essay but in this case was not the best way of showing this student’s unique strengths as a person.

The Human Advisor’s Version of a Hook / Introduction

personal statements ai

When advising this student, I pushed them to open the essay with a story about being a Resident Assistant because it’s a less common experience that could make them standout, while also highlighting their advocacy, compassion, and community investment.

If you’re interested, you can find the outline I created for them at the bottom of Part 1 .

And as a contrast to the introductions / hooks the AI produced, I wanted to show the introductory paragraph that this student and I created together:

The static of my Resident Assistant (RA) walkie talkie roused me from my studying: “Noise complaint, room 767, can you check it out?”

I walked down the hall and knocked, ready to issue a quick warning, but then I saw “Julia” drenched in tears with countless beer cans and shot glasses scattered across the room. She had been binge drinking. Ensuring she was physically stable, I momentarily overlooked the alcohol violation and focused on calming Julia down and understanding what was wrong.

It took time for her to open up, but she eventually revealed that her father had passed away after a wildfire that consumed her home. She wanted to fly home, but she had finals and no home to return to. To numb her emotions, she had been drinking and experimenting with adderall. Over the next few hours, I let Julia vent her emotions, helped her clean up, and gave her the encouragement she needed to get through her final the next day. To ensure she wouldn’t relapse, I invited her to study in my room and kept her company for the remainder of the night. After our finals the next morning, I searched for natural disaster financial and housing assistance to help Julia find her way back home. I kept up with her every day over break and helped her establish alternative coping strategies to avoid binge drinking in the future.

I have a soft spot for students like Julia because I can relate to the fear, uncertainty, and isolation one feels during tough situations…

Why this Version is Better:

  • It focuses on an activity that is more unique for a pre-med (Resident Assistant) as opposed to one that is very common (ED Scribe) - something I was able to advise the student about based on my expertise
  • It doesn’t worry too much about answering “Why medicine?” or “Why physician?” in the first few paragraphs, which can come across as heavy-handed and obvious; instead, it focuses on highlighting the student’s values and impact on others (which we then used to transition into the student’s backstory and medical aspirations)
  • The events and voice come across as authentic, but also polished, because it’s written by a real human being and edited by a skilled expert
  • Showing the before-and-after of the character “Julia” and the student’s impact on her creates a much more memorable story, where the student is a major contributor/leader
  • It creates a nice balance of showing and telling, which allows for emotional resonance without becoming overly dramatic or sentimental

Key Takeaways for Using AI to Write

Hooks / introductions.

1.) As of now, AI isn’t very good at writing hooks that you can use verbatim, which is something I wouldn’t condone ethically anyway.

2.) However, AI is good at helping you brainstorm ideas for hooks.

3.) AI can potentially give you a helpful template to then personalize on your own.

4.) The text and tone still must match your voice (and that’s hard to do).

5.) Make sure you have an experienced (human) editor in your corner.

6.) Before prompting the AI, talk with a human advisor about which experience(s) would be best to use as the opener of your personal statement.

7.) Once you have chosen the right experience(s), make sure to give the AI a strong, thorough prompt to ensure you get the best results.

Can I Use AI to Write My Personal Statement?

personal statements ai

With technology rapidly advancing, it’s not surprising that university applicants are increasingly seeking the help of Artificial Intelligence in writing their personal statements.

After all, using AI tools seems to make a lot of sense.

AI speeds up the process, writes accurately and can save you time and effort. That can be of real value if your focus is on studying for your exams.

But can you really use AI tools to write your personal statement and ace your university application?

Using AI to write a personal statement has advantages and disadvantages. AI tools allow applicants to create accurate and engaging personal statements, but these can lack the depth and detail needed to convince an admissions reader. Ethical and personal concerns are also limiting factors.

Let’s drill down to the specifics…

Can AI Write A University Personal Statement?

When we talk about AI, what we’re really considering is output created without significant human interaction. In other words…

Artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines. Techtarget.com

AI tools such as Jasper , Quillbot , ChatGPT and CopyAI all do pretty much the same thing: draw upon the sum of their collective knowledge to create an aggregate response based on user prompts.

The important thing to remember is that AI doesn’t know you as an individual . It doesn’t understand your feelings or recognise the value of your experiences.

Only you can do that.

What AI can do brilliantly is put your ideas into words.

The problem when it comes to using AI to write a personal statement is that because AI doesn’t understand how each element of your life and education has helped you evolve, it doesn’t always know which words to use.

It won’t understand your character and values.

It can’t yet think for you on an individual basis.

In other words, AI hasn’t lived your life, so it needs a huge range of inputs in order to write a truly unique personal statement that genuinely reflects your inspirations and ambitions.

And that kind of defeats the object.

Let me give you an example…

A Personal Statement Written By AI

Can AI be trusted to write something as personal and significant as a personal statement?

The implications of this question have far-reaching consequences, and it’s crucial to take the time to consider them.

On one hand, while AI-powered writing tools can assist in the writing process, providing helpful suggestions and corrections, there is still a level of uncertainty when it comes to the authenticity of the output.

And if there’s one thing a personal statement needs to be, it’s personal .

After all, a personal statement is meant to reflect an individual’s personality, experiences, and aspirations.

Can AI truly capture these nuances and emotions with the right degree of authenticity?

Here’s the Prompt I Gave ChatGPT:

https://personalstatementplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ChatGTP-Personal-Statement-Prompt-1024x719.png

Pretty vague, I’ll admit.

But, if I gave it all the pieces of information it needed to make a personal statement that truly sums up my interest in and preparation for a course of study, I’d literally have to write the personal statement from scratch!

Here’s the Output I Received:

https://personalstatementplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/AI-Generated-Personal-Statement-1024x576.png

On the surface, it’s a good-looking response.

The AI has analysed enough personal statement examples to identify common elements of language and structure. Words like ‘dedicated’, ‘passionate’ and ‘actively pursued’ are dynamic and convincing, and they certainly sound good.

They might even be true reflections of your lived academic experience.

But the problem is, when everybody uses them in their AI-generated personal statement, they lose all value and authenticity.

According to Universities UK, in 2022, 683,650 people applied through UCAS to an undergraduate course . That’s a lot of personal statements, just through the UCAS undergraduate system .

Imagine if each one used the wording above?

At best, this AI-generated personal statement gives you a guide to structuring the elements you need to include . That’s hugely helpful, but it’s probably best to use this as a starting point and adapt it to reflect your individual experiences and ambitions more fully.

personal statements ai

Diversity, Creativity and Human Writing vs AI

A personal statement is a crucial document when it comes to job or university applications.

It is specifically designed to showcase your personality and convince the reader that you are the best possible candidate for the position you are applying for.

That’s why it’s important to take the time to craft a personal statement that is unique to you.

It’s also a required component within many application processes because it compels applicants to analyse their skills and experiences and articulate their academic and professional ambitions.

The process of doing this can be exceptionally valuable and is often a critical factor in deciding on particular courses or subjects.

To hand this process over to AI could actually disadvantage you further down the line. You might find you’ve made the wrong decision, applied for a course you’re not suited for or overestimated your capabilities.

To find out more about exactly how personal your personal statement should be, check out my post here .

personal statements ai

Equally, the quality and content of your personal statement might not match your academic achievements, giving you and the admissions reader a false impression of your abilities.

As Dr Andrew McStay, a senior lecturer in advertising and digital media at Bangor University notes…

“Using AI to write a personal statement could be seen as a shortcut. It is often an attempt to avoid the ethical and intellectual work required in such circumstances. By using AI, applicants miss out on the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and articulate their goals in their own words. This process is crucial for personal growth and development and cannot be replaced by relying on technology.”

The Ethics of AI in Personal Statements

The ethics of using AI to write a personal statement is a hot topic for debate, with many people arguing that relying on AI to write a personal statement raises ethical concerns.

Universities and employers expect the personal statement to be written by the applicant, and using AI to create the document could be seen as dishonest and deceptive.

Although AI is capable of generating text that is grammatically correct, it cannot truly capture the essence of an individual’s experiences and aspirations. The personal statement is meant to reflect the applicant’s unique voice and perspective, and using AI to create it undermines the authenticity of the document.

You might find that your personal statement falls foul of the sophisticated plagiarism software used by institutions all over the world.

If that happens, your application is likely to be rejected.

The Argument For Using AI in Personal Statements

It’s important to recognise that AI has come a long way in recent years, and the technology continues to improve.

Perhaps with further development and refinement of these tools, we may eventually see AI-generated personal statements that are just as compelling and authentic as those written by humans.

Ultimately, the decision to trust AI with such an important task is up to the individual , and it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

The Argument Against Using AI in Personal Statements

AI tools are still far behind humans in terms of creativity and the ability to bring a personal touch to writing.

This is because creativity requires not only logical thinking but also imagination, intuition, and a deep understanding of the human experience that machines lack.

Therefore, while AI may be able to automate certain tasks, it cannot replace the value that comes from human creativity and individuality .

As Dave Coplin, chief envisioning officer at Microsoft UK , explains…

“AI is not good at creative thinking because it cannot make the intuitive leaps that are required for truly original ideas.”

While AI can analyse vast amounts of data and identify patterns, it is still limited in its ability to generate new and innovative ideas that go beyond what it has been programmed to do. In contrast, humans are capable of making connections between seemingly unrelated concepts and coming up with entirely new ideas that have never been considered before.

Whilst a personal statement might not change the world, a successful one could change your life , and in that sense, it’s worth crafting it with care.

If you need more convincing, check out my article on the 9 reasons why you should write your own personal statement and find out exactly what it should include.

Writing Assistance for Personal Statements

While it is true that the personal statement writing process is best done by the applicant themselves, AI-powered writing tools like Grammarly can provide valuable support.

In addition to helping users improve their grammar and sentence structure, these tools can also suggest alternative vocabulary and phrasing and identify areas where the language may be too informal or too technical for the intended audience.

This can lead to a more polished and effective personal statement and can help applicants meet those character or word limits without losing valuable content.

I recommend Grammarly to all my clients and students – it’s a hugely valuable tool for academic writing. You can check out the current offers at Grammarly by following this link or hit the banner below for more information.

AI can also be used as a tool for brainstorming and idea generation, providing suggestions and prompts for the applicant to consider.

However, it is important that the final product is crafted by the applicant themselves, as personal statements are meant to reflect their personal experiences and aspirations.

Should You Use AI to Write A Personal Statement?

A personal statement is not just a document to showcase one’s qualifications and achievements but also a reflection of one’s character and values. It is an opportunity for the applicant to tell their story and explain why they are a good fit for the program they are applying to.

Therefore, it is crucial to spend time and effort crafting a well-written and compelling personal statement.

As Dr. McStay states…

“There is no substitute for the hard work of thinking and writing.”

While AI can provide assistance, it is ultimately up to the applicant to put in the hard work and dedicate the necessary time and effort to create a personal statement that truly represents who they are and why they are the best candidate for the program .

In order to do so, it is advisable to start by reflecting on your personal and professional experiences, as well as your future goals. From there, you can begin to craft a personal statement that highlights your strengths, your achievements, and the unique qualities that make you stand out from other candidates.

Remember that a successful personal statement is not just about listing your accomplishments but also about demonstrating how they have prepared you for the next step in your academic or professional journey.

So, should you use AI to write a personal statement? My answer might surprise you.

Yes, you should use AI to help you write your personal statement.

It’s an exceptionally valuable tool that gives you the opportunity to create excellent content.

But it’s only one tool.

Whether you use it to help develop a structure, to rephrase elements in your personal statement or brainstorm ideas, the final outcome will always be strongest if it comes from the applicant’s head and heart.

It’s your opportunity to say exactly what you want to say about your ambitions , achievements and strengths . It’s your chance to work out who you are and who you want to be. It’s a task that helps you define your future.

And while getting some help from AI to write a personal statement is sensible, creating your final document organically, with originality and personality, will always result in a more compelling and successful piece of writing.

I hope this article on using AI to write a personal statement has been helpful. Above all, I wish you every success in your academic career.

If you’d like to work with me to develop your personal statement 1:1, I’d be delighted to hear from you.

Sample Personal Statement in Artificial Intelligence

personal statements ai

by Talha Omer, MBA, M.Eng., Harvard & Cornell Grad

In personal statement samples by field.

The following personal statement is written by an applicant who got accepted to the doctorate program in Artificial Intelligence at Imperial College in London. Variations of this personal statement also got accepted at Caltech, UCLA, and Rutgers University. Read this essay to understand what a top personal statement in Artificial Intelligence should look like.

I’ve always had a penchant for creating things to solve problems. The first time my proclivity utilized computers was when I made a simple quiz program in Visual Basic for my school Mathematics class at age 11. I still remember the accomplishment I felt, followed by imaginative thoughts of what else I could do with a computer. In retrospect, this was probably when it was decided that computers would somehow be well-woven in my career.

I worked hard and gained admission to the country’s top-ranked engineering university, Caltech, where I performed exceptionally well in computing courses and particularly enjoyed the lab modules. During my studies, I wondered how everything I learned could be applied to deal with the current problems around me. My thoughts culminated in my final year project, where I developed a remote energy monitoring, profiling, and control system for smart grids to deal with the energy crisis in third-world countries. Designing and developing the prototype was an enthralling experience for me, leading me to choose a career in product development. I applied and was successfully offered a role at the Center for Advanced Research in Engineering (CARE). Since joining, I have been on the Software Defined Radio (SDR) project’s development team. As a result, I have gained a professional understanding of reliable technical coding for multiple platforms in various programming languages.

While working at CARE, I was sponsored for my graduate studies in Computer Engineering. Intrigued by articles on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the MIT Technology Review magazine, I first formally studied Machine Learning (ML) in my graduate coursework. Although I was initially skeptical, primarily due to my ignorance of the field, the futuristic subject captivated me by its applicability to modern problems. My enthusiasm led me to work on an experimental project of a human crowd motion classification system that intelligently detected panic states in crowds. The idea was that this would facilitate effective policing by automating the monitoring large numbers of live security feeds. The project helped me practice and develop my knowledge and further strengthened my interest in AI. AI is currently revolutionizing the industry with its applications in the healthcare to the automobile industry, providing exciting new avenues to explore. It is changing the world, and I want to be a part of that change.

My long-term goal is to be in a leading technical role in the industry utilizing specialist AI for consumer-driven applications. I am sure that my expertise in embedded systems will be helpful in this path. As the next step towards my aim, I’d like to build on my knowledge and study advanced AI concepts in a focused graduate degree. The specialist programs at Imperial College London are the most comprehensive in the UK. Moreover, London is the AI start-up hub of the UK, spawning companies like Deepmind, Babylon Health, and Verv. During my studies, I would also be on the lookout for part-time internship opportunities and possible industry collaborations while working on my master’s project to gain valuable industrial experience. Aside from academics, as an avid guitarist and singer, I would be looking forward to joining the universities music society, where I could learn from the multicultural experience Imperial has to offer while contributing from my own.

In my undergraduate studies, I was heavily involved in extra-curricular activities. Although I gained invaluable life skills which have benefitted me immensely in my professional career, I also learned the importance of maintaining balance. As a result, I lost focus on my studies, and my CGPA suffered. However, determined to make things right, I recently graduated with a 3.63 CGPA in my master’s and scored 331 on the crucial GRE. I believe this is an accurate indicator of my academic ability. I am fully aware of the challenges of a graduate degree at a top-tier institute like Imperial College London. I am confident that I possess the relevant exposure, intellect, and resolve to best these challenges and make significant contributions to the industry.

Applying to college can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to writing a personal statement. This essay not only showcases your writing skills but also highlights your unique personality, achievements, and aspirations. While it may seem unnecessary, tedious, time-consuming, and just another tick-the-box, know that as each application is processed, grades are just one of the criteria of selection, more often than not a personal statement becomes the differentiating factor.

A diverse group of smiling students looking down into the camera, holding a speech bubble sign that says 'THIS IS MY STORY' at a gathering, symbolizing individuality and shared experiences in crafting personal narratives.

To help you navigate this crucial component of your application, we’ve compiled a ten-step guide, complete with inspiring examples to ensure your personal statement makes a lasting impression on admissions officers.

  • Start Early and Brainstorm Begin the process early to give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm. Reflect on your experiences, achievements, and motivations. Think about what makes you unique, both in terms of personality and life experiences.
  • Understand the Prompt Make sure you clearly understand what the college is asking for. Each institution may have different prompts or questions. Tailor your response specifically to each prompt, ensuring you answer it fully and directly. Be comprehensive and succinct in your answers, choosing words that convey your candidature the best.
  • Create an Outline Draft an outline to organize your thoughts and ensure a coherent flow of ideas. This will help you structure your statement effectively, making sure every part contributes towards presenting a compelling narrative.
  • Exhibit, Don’t Tell Use specific examples to demonstrate your qualities and achievements. Instead of stating that you’re a great leader, describe a situation where you demonstrated leadership. This method makes your statement more engaging and believable.
  • Focus on Your Strengths While it might be tempting to cover a wide range of subjects, focusing on a few key strengths or experiences can have a stronger impact. Depth over breadth is crucial in personal statements.
  • Be Authentic Admissions officers can tell when a statement is genuine. Write honestly about your experiences and passions and let your natural voice shine through. Authenticity is key to making a personal statement stand out.
  • Get Feedback After drafting your statement, seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or friends. They can provide insights on clarity, grammar, and the overall impact of your essay. They all have a perspective of you from an external viewpoint, so do not skip this step.
  • Revise and Edit Use the feedback to revise your statement. Look for areas where you can clarify your points, eliminate redundancy, and correct grammatical errors. This step is crucial for polishing your final submission.
  • Keep It Concise Adhere to the word limit. Being able to express your thoughts concisely and effectively is a skill appreciated by admissions officers.
  • Final Review Before submitting, do a final review. Read your statement out loud to catch any remaining errors or awkward phrasing. Make sure it sounds natural and is easy to read.

David’s story reflects his empathy and leadership in translating compassion into actionable community improvement.

Commentary: Every life is extraordinary; it’s how you narrate your story that captures the reader’s eye. Your personal statement should reflect your unique experiences and aspirations.

Conclusion:

In crafting your personal statement, remember, you don’t have to be extraordinary in the usual sense—honesty and transparency are key. Be a dreamer of the art of the possible; dream as big as you can and let those dreams articulate themselves in your words. This approach not only reveals your true self to admissions officers but also shows your potential to contribute meaningfully to their academic community. Start your adventure today! Use these steps as your guide to find the university that best fits your future goals. Dream big and achieve even bigger.

Simulated Self: Cloning Myself with AI

Simulated Self: Cloning Myself with AI

Cloning myself with AI

In this embodied experiment, I trained an algorithm on my personal data (social media, psychological self-assessment, third-party assessment). I then had this bot, or digital “clone”, direct what I would do every day: who I would see, what I would wear, what I should eat… I also used it to communicate with my family and friends on my behalf through generated messages and generated voice notes. Very quickly, my clone restricted me to repeating the same activity, seeing a very small group of people, and navigating a tiny geographic range.

This demonstrated that algorithms are reductive reflections of who we are, pushing us into echo chambers of past behaviors and beliefs in order to serve the commercial interests of their creators. By relying on algorithms too much to guide our personal decisions, we lose our agency and individuality, instead fusing with this reductive version.

Algorithms and AI carry scientific authority, leading us to misidentify their recommendations as diagnostic rather than probabilistic. My thesis questions the wisdom of entrusting extensive personal data to algorithms in our quest for self-improvement and scrutinizes the unsettling ease with which we accept digital reflections as true representations of ourselves. While the fear of AI becoming sentient is misplaced, its ability to simulate sentience can pose as much of a risk. My thesis calls for a more discerning engagement with technology, advocating for a critical stance toward the data we relinquish to digital platforms and the interpretations made by algorithms. In short, the goal is critical awareness in order to increase user agency in an increasingly digital and AI-reliant world.

Artificial intelligence personal statement example.

Growing up in the golden age of technology, I have witnessed as technological advancements have shaped our lives. From allowing physically challenged people to run, to catalysing medical breakthroughs, and letting people who were born without the ability to hear, listen to "four seasons" by Vivaldi for the first time in their lives. Technology has truly changed what it means to be human.

Even though modern advancements have provided us with the luxury to travel in autonomous vehicles or to produce robots that work for us, today we are faced with one of the biggest challenges of this century. How do we distribute the wealth created by machines? How do we formulate the moral decisions a driverless car might have to resort to?

Scientists, today, are striving to find answers to these questions, and I am not going to stand by and watch from the sidelines. I want to immerse myself in scientific research and help improve the world we live in. To achieve this, I plan to pursue a degree in computer sciences at university.

I have always been fascinated by STEM subjects, as they allow me to understand and explore the workings of our world in greater detail. In A-Level physics, I studied intricate theories and laws of nature; modules related to light were especially fascinating as I learned about the dual-nature of light and the properties that allow it to be used as a medium to transfer data (in Fiber Optics).

While exploring topics related to electricity, I grasped the workings of electrons in transferring current and learned the effects of resistance. In practical component of the subject, I applied my knowledge to maximise the efficiency of various circuits and projects. Computer programming and machine learning are one of the major reasons for my interest in artificial intelligence.

To satiate this interest, I opted for mathematics and additional mathematics subjects. These courses have enabled me to solve and optimise sets of linear equations, an integral part of computer science, and have polished my problem-solving skills.

I can see myself using these concepts to program and design correct algorithms. Moreover, by exploring the statistics vector of the subject, I have developed integral data analysis and reasoning skills and feel confident about transferring my expertise in the subject to future projects.

Outside classroom, various clubs and extra-curricular activities have promoted my holistic growth. Summer internship at Tihami Studios Lahore has helped me enhance my command on Java.

Working with a team, I designed the User Interface of an android game and mapped out its controls. To say that it was an exhilarating experience would be a gross understatement, and to say it only deepened my desire to do more, even more so.

Additionally, I won the prestigious LSU app development competition. For my submission, I developed a virtual choreographer.

The main focus of my project was to find a common ground between music and dance and then use artificial intelligence to mimic the creativity of a real life dancer.

By integrating A.I. with available data of human choreographers, I ensured that the dances produced by the app were not only humanly-possible but also in sync with the beats of the provided audio file.

My school course-work and life experiences have prepared me for research opportunities that I find in the diverse field of computer science.

To delve further into this penchant, I want to study in an environment that is diverse and intellectually challenging. The United Kingdom is at the forefront of academic study and research in the global headquarters of world renowned technological giants.

I believe that a degree from England will arm me with the requisite knowledge, an international network of like-minded people and the exposure to refine my skills to become a future computer scientist.

Scarlett Johansson says she is 'shocked, angered' over new ChatGPT voice

When OpenAI announced its latest ChatGPT last week, the AI voice it used in its demo was quickly compared to Scarlett Johansson's voice in the 2013 sci-fi film "Her," but now the company says it is pulling the voice.

Lawyers for Scarlett Johansson are demanding that OpenAI disclose how it developed an AI personal assistant voice that the actress says sounds uncannily similar to her own.

Johansson's legal team has sent OpenAI two letters asking the company to detail the process by which it developed a voice the tech company dubbed "Sky," Johansson's publicist told NPR in a revelation that has not been previously reported.

After OpenAI held a live demonstration of the voice last week, many observers compared it to Johansson's voice in the the 2013 Spike Jonze romantic sci-fi film "Her," which centers on a man who falls in love with the female voice of his computer's operating system.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has said the 2013 Spike Jonze film is his favorite movie, invited comparisons by posting the word "Her" on X after the company announced the new ChatGPT version. But later, OpenAI executives denied any connection between Johansson and the new voice assistant.

Then the company suddenly dropped the voice.

In a post on X just before midnight Pacific time Sunday, OpenAI said the voice would be halted as it addresses "questions about how we chose the voices in ChatGPT." A company spokeswoman would not provide further detail.

Turns out, Altman had been courting the Hollywood star for months, and she now feels betrayed.

Johansson said that nine months ago Altman approached her proposing that she allow her voice to be licensed for the new ChatGPT voice assistant. He thought it would be "comforting to people" who are uneasy with AI technology.

"After much consideration and for personal reasons, I declined the offer," Johansson wrote.

Just two days before the new ChatGPT was unveiled, Altman again reached out to Johansson's team, urging the actress to reconsider, she said.

But before she and Altman could connect, the company publicly announced its new, splashy product, complete with a voice that she says appears to have copied her likeness.

To Johansson, it was a personal affront.

"I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference," she said.

She also found it alarming, she said, at a moment when the internet is awash in disinformation.

"In a time when we are all grappling with deepfakes and the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute clarity," Johansson said.

OpenAI's Altman denied there is any connection between Johansson and its Sky voice.

"We cast the voice actor behind Sky's voice before any outreach to Ms. Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have paused using Sky's voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson that we didn't communicate better," Altman wrote in a statement to NPR.

Johansson used the incident to draw attention to the lack of legal safeguards around the use of creative work to power leading AI tools.

"I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected," she said.

OpenAI says voice of another actress was used to develop 'Sky'

In a blog post late Sunday, OpenAI said the AI voice in question, known as "Sky," was developed from the voice of another actress whose identity the company said it is not revealing to protect her privacy.

OpenAI releases latest ChatGPT — it can talk, laugh and even sing like a human

"We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity's distinctive voice — Sky's voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice," the company wrote.

The new model, known as GPT-4o, transforms the chatbot into a voice assistant that can interpret facial expressions, detect emotion and even sing on command.

The new voice assistant will be publicly available in the coming weeks. During a live-demo last week, it struck a knowing, flirtatious tone with some of OpenAI's employees, leading some to wonder whether the coquettish demeanor was an intentional ploy to keep people engaged with the AI system.

In an interview with NPR last week, OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati said the company did not pattern any ChatGPT voices on Johansson's sultry computer voice in the movie.

"It says more about our imagination, our storytelling as a society than about the technology itself," Murati said. "The way we developed this technology is not based on the movie or a sci-fi story. We're trying to build these machines that can think and have robust understandings of the world."

"I don't know about the voice. I actually had to go and listen to Scarlett Johansson's voice," she said.

Asked about ChatGPT's flirtatious banter, Murati said the model merely responds to what people provide to it.

"It will react to how you're interacting with it," she said. "It's not preset. It's based on inputs."

In its Sunday night blog post, OpenAI said that chatbot was developed with five voices that were produced after working closely with voice and screen actors.

"Looking ahead, you can expect even more options as we plan to introduce additional voices in ChatGPT to better match the diverse interests and preferences of users," the company wrote in the post.

A day after OpenAI's announcement, Google held its annual developer conference where it unveiled its own personal AI assistant, also voiced by a female, known as Project Astra. While similar, Google's version appeared far less quippy and playful and more matter of fact.

Together, experts say, the products provide a glimpse into the next generation of cutting-edge AI technology — and also raise questions about the risks that follow as more and more people adopt the tools.

Visar Berisha, an Arizona State University professor who studies AI speech technology, said it is hard to predict how advanced AI voice assistants that speak with human-like personalities will change society.

"Communication by voice is really intimate, really impactful. It allows the AI to express subtleties, things that are perceived as sincere, urgent, joy, concern," he said. "And all of these serve to foster a deeper connection between the user and machine. You can see how these interactions can potentially become addictive."

It's possible, Berisha said, that people will start forming emotional connections to AI systems, much like the plot of "Her" — a movie that does not end happily for the protagonist.

"When I first saw that movie it seemed like science fiction," Berisha said. "It doesn't seem like that now."

PRESS RELEASE

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today announced new accessibility features coming later this year, including Eye Tracking, a way for users with physical disabilities to control iPad or iPhone with their eyes. Additionally, Music Haptics will offer a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music using the Taptic Engine in iPhone; Vocal Shortcuts will allow users to perform tasks by making a custom sound; Vehicle Motion Cues can help reduce motion sickness when using iPhone or iPad in a moving vehicle; and more accessibility features will come to visionOS. These features combine the power of Apple hardware and software, harnessing Apple silicon, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to further Apple’s decades-long commitment to designing products for everyone.

“We believe deeply in the transformative power of innovation to enrich lives,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “That’s why for nearly 40 years, Apple has championed inclusive design by embedding accessibility at the core of our hardware and software. We’re continuously pushing the boundaries of technology, and these new features reflect our long-standing commitment to delivering the best possible experience to all of our users.”

“Each year, we break new ground when it comes to accessibility,” said Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives. “These new features will make an impact in the lives of a wide range of users, providing new ways to communicate, control their devices, and move through the world.”

Powered by artificial intelligence, Eye Tracking gives users a built-in option for navigating iPad and iPhone with just their eyes. Designed for users with physical disabilities, Eye Tracking uses the front-facing camera to set up and calibrate in seconds, and with on-device machine learning, all data used to set up and control this feature is kept securely on device, and isn’t shared with Apple.

Eye Tracking works across iPadOS and iOS apps, and doesn’t require additional hardware or accessories. With Eye Tracking, users can navigate through the elements of an app and use Dwell Control to activate each element, accessing additional functions such as physical buttons, swipes, and other gestures solely with their eyes.

Music Haptics is a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music on iPhone. With this accessibility feature turned on, the Taptic Engine in iPhone plays taps, textures, and refined vibrations to the audio of the music. Music Haptics works across millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog, and will be available as an API for developers to make music more accessible in their apps.

With Vocal Shortcuts, iPhone and iPad users can assign custom utterances that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and complete complex tasks. Listen for Atypical Speech, another new feature, gives users an option for enhancing speech recognition for a wider range of speech. Listen for Atypical Speech uses on-device machine learning to recognize user speech patterns. Designed for users with acquired or progressive conditions that affect speech, such as cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or stroke, these features provide a new level of customization and control, building on features introduced in iOS 17 for users who are nonspeaking or at risk of losing their ability to speak.

“Artificial intelligence has the potential to improve speech recognition for millions of people with atypical speech, so we are thrilled that Apple is bringing these new accessibility features to consumers,” said Mark Hasegawa-Johnson, the Speech Accessibility Project at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s principal investigator. “The Speech Accessibility Project was designed as a broad-based, community-supported effort to help companies and universities make speech recognition more robust and effective, and Apple is among the accessibility advocates who made the Speech Accessibility Project possible.”

Vehicle Motion Cues is a new experience for iPhone and iPad that can help reduce motion sickness for passengers in moving vehicles. Research shows that motion sickness is commonly caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel, which can prevent some users from comfortably using iPhone or iPad while riding in a moving vehicle. With Vehicle Motion Cues, animated dots on the edges of the screen represent changes in vehicle motion to help reduce sensory conflict without interfering with the main content. Using sensors built into iPhone and iPad, Vehicle Motion Cues recognizes when a user is in a moving vehicle and responds accordingly. The feature can be set to show automatically on iPhone, or can be turned on and off in Control Center.

Accessibility features coming to CarPlay include Voice Control, Color Filters, and Sound Recognition. With Voice Control, users can navigate CarPlay and control apps with just their voice. With Sound Recognition, drivers or passengers who are deaf or hard of hearing can turn on alerts to be notified of car horns and sirens. For users who are colorblind, Color Filters make the CarPlay interface visually easier to use, with additional visual accessibility features including Bold Text.

This year, accessibility features coming to visionOS will include systemwide Live Captions to help everyone — including users who are deaf or hard of hearing — follow along with spoken dialogue in live conversations and in audio from apps. With Live Captions for FaceTime in visionOS, more users can easily enjoy the unique experience of connecting and collaborating using their Persona. Apple Vision Pro will add the capability to move captions using the window bar during Apple Immersive Video, as well as support for additional Made for iPhone hearing devices and cochlear hearing processors. Updates for vision accessibility will include the addition of Reduce Transparency, Smart Invert, and Dim Flashing Lights for users who have low vision, or those who want to avoid bright lights and frequent flashing.

These features join the dozens of accessibility features already available in Apple Vision Pro, which offers a flexible input system and an intuitive interface designed with a wide range of users in mind. Features such as VoiceOver, Zoom, and Color Filters can also provide users who are blind or have low vision access to spatial computing, while features such as Guided Access can support users with cognitive disabilities. Users can control Vision Pro with any combination of their eyes, hands, or voice, with accessibility features including Switch Control, Sound Actions, and Dwell Control that can also help those with physical disabilities.

“Apple Vision Pro is without a doubt the most accessible technology I’ve ever used,” said Ryan Hudson-Peralta, a Detroit-based product designer, accessibility consultant, and cofounder of Equal Accessibility LLC. “As someone born without hands and unable to walk, I know the world was not designed with me in mind, so it’s been incredible to see that visionOS just works. It’s a testament to the power and importance of accessible and inclusive design.”

This week, Apple is introducing new features, curated collections, and more in celebration of Global Accessibility Awareness Day:
