Virginia Woolf

orlando a biography online

Description

Originally published in 1928, Orlando , one of Virginia Woolf’s better-known novels, provides a splendid example of Modernist experimentation with genre and storytelling.

Orlando is a young Elizabethan nobleman who loves writing poetry as much as he does hunting, wrestling with the household dogs, and indulging in a fine night’s carouse. After being favored by Queen Elizabeth herself, he falls tragically in love. But as he nurses a decades-long heartbreak, Orlando realizes that poetry provides little solace.

Sometime in the eighteenth century he escapes England as an ambassador to Turkey, where after a mysterious illness he awakens as a woman—but still not a published author. While the arts of reading, writing, criticism expand, Orlando’s poetic aspirations remain frustrated until the twentieth century, when, having returned to England, she finds love, life, and her voice at last.

On its surface the biography of a fantastic Elizabethan nobleman, the novel is frequently described as a love letter to Vita Sackville-West, who had a lengthy affair with Woolf in the early 1920s and whose family history undergirds much of the detail of Orlando’s life and home. Orlando also features Woolf’s masterful stream of consciousness technique, employed metafictionally as Orlando and the narrator compose in tandem the novel’s intricate final chapter. Most importantly, Orlando’s absurd fantasy is underpinned by wit and humor: Orlando is a comic—sometimes satirical—text, revealing a side of Woolf rarely seen in her earlier work.

A lighthearted romp of a book, Orlando remains resolutely literary and asks lingering questions about the construction of gender, the intersection between “the spirit of the age” and artistic creation, and what loving another person really means. Woolf was one of the most important Modernist writers, and Orlando reveals her at her playful, shimmering—dare we say sexy?—best.

orlando a biography online

With the conclusion of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, the presidential tickets are set.

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will face former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. The candidates have roughly two months left to make their cases to the public. The biggest opportunity will come during the presidential and vice presidential debates.

When is the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump?

Trump and Harris will meet on stage at 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, for "The ABC News Presidential Debate | Race for the White House" at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

ABC's David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate the Sept. 10 debate, according to ABC.

At this point, ABC hasn't decided if they will allow an audience at the debate. The CNN presidential debate did not have an audience.

How to watch the Sept. 10 presidential debate

It is on ABC, the ABC News Live 24/7 streaming network, Disney+, and Hulu.

Who is David Muir?

According to his biography on abcnews.com , Muir is the anchor and managing editor of ABC World News Tonight with David Muir and co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20. Since joining ABC News, Muir has spent more than two decades reporting from all over the world.

He conducted the first interview with then-President Donald Trump in the White House and was the first network anchor to interview President Trump during the COVID-19 pandemic. He secured the first joint interview with then-Vice President Joe Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris weeks before the 2020 election. He has conducted numerous exclusive interviews with President Biden.

Who is Lindsey Davis?

According to her website , Davis is currently an anchor for ABC News Live Prime, which is ABC News Live’s first-ever streaming evening newscast, and weekend “World News Tonight” on Sundays. She is a correspondent filing reports for “World News Tonight,” “Good Morning America,” “20/20” and “Nightline.”

Throughout the 2020 presidential election cycle, Davis was at the forefront of ABC News’ coverage, beginning with all eight nights of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions to co-anchoring major political events such as two presidential debates, the vice presidential debate, presidential election coverage and Inauguration Day. She also moderated ABC News’ Democratic presidential debates in September 2019 and February 2020.

Will there be more presidential debates besides September?

The former president has floated dates for other debates on Sept. 4 and Sept. 25 after he finally agreed to the Sept. 10 debate, with details to be worked out with the Harris campaign.

"I think they'll be very revealing," Trump told reporters during a snap news conference at his Florida Mar-a-Lago estate on Aug. 8. "We'd like to do three debates."

Harris, speaking to reporters in Michigan, responded to the Republican nominee: "I am looking forward to debating Donald Trump and we have a date of September 10. I hear he's finally committed to it and I'm looking forward to it."

When is the vice presidential debate?

Vance and Walz will debate Oct. 1 in New York City. The debate will be hosted by CBS News.

About the author

Virginia woolf.

Virginia Woolf is now recognized as a major twentieth-century author, a great novelist and essayist and a key figure in literary history as a feminist and a modernist. Born in 1882, she was the daughter of the editor and critic Leslie Stephen, and suffered a traumatic adolescence after the deaths of her mother, in 1895, and her step-sister Stella, in 1897, leaving her subject to breakdowns for the rest of her life. Her father died in 1904 and two years later her favourite brother Thoby died suddenly of typhoid.

With her sister, the painter Vanessa Bell, she was drawn into the company of writers and artists such as Lytton Strachey and Roger Fry, later known as the Bloomsbury Group. Among them she met Leonard Woolf, whom she married in 1912, and together they founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, which was to publish the work of T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster and Katherine Mansfield as well as the earliest translations of Freud. Woolf lived an energetic life among friends and family, reviewing and writing, and dividing her time between London and the Sussex Downs. In 1941, fearing another attack of mental illness, she drowned herself.

Her first novel, The Voyage Out, appeared in 1915, and she then worked through the transitional Night and Day (1919) to the highly experimental and impressionistic Jacob's Room (1922). From then on her fiction became a series of brilliant and extraordinarily varied experiments, each one searching for a fresh way of presenting the relationship between individual lives and the forces of society and history. She was particularly concerned with women's experience, not only in her novels but also in her essays and her two books of feminist polemic, A Room of One's Own (1929) and Three Guineas (1938).

Her major novels include Mrs Dalloway (1925), the historical fantasy Orlando (1928), written for Vita Sackville-West, the extraordinarily poetic vision of The Waves (1931), the family saga of The Years (1937), and Between the Acts (1941). All these are published by Penguin, as are her Diaries, Volumes I-V, and selections from her essays and short stories.
