New film festival coming to Round Top outside Austin
A new film festival is coming to a historic town in the Texas Hill Country, just between Austin and Houston.
Round Top Film Festival, from mother-daughter duo Shanna Schanen and Skylar Schanen, will have its inaugural year in the town of Round Top from Nov. 7-10. Submissions to the event are currently open and close on Aug. 20.
While the Schanens said the festival will incorporate much of the town, the Festival Hill campus from the Round Top Festival Institute will serve as the main venue.
"Growing up, my family and I always went to Round Top... and so we had discussed maybe starting a film festival because the town has been expanding so much and it's where a lot of creatives go," Skylar told the Statesman. "Creating a film festival is our love letter to Round Top."
Skylar has a background in writing, directing and acting, and after attending many film festivals, she wants to bring only the positive elements she's witnessed elsewhere to Round Top.

This includes not just feature film screenings, but panels and speakers. One screening will be for a "throwback film" made in Texas back in the '70s, '80s or '90s.
"We'll hopefully have a podcast during the festival in a different location (where) people can go and get some inside scoop on the industry," Shanna, who grew up close to Round Top in La Grange, told the Statesman.
Early bird festival tickets are currently on sale on the Round Top Film Festival website . The silver screen pass, which is like general admission, costs $325 while the luminary pass, which is like VIP, costs $575. The sale of early bird passes ends July 31.

Greetings, Polygon readers! Each week, we round up the most notable new releases to streaming and VOD, highlighting the biggest and best new movies for you to watch at home.
This week, Challengers , Luca Guadagnino’s erotic sports drama starring Zendaya ( Dune: Part Two ), arrives on VOD follow its theatrical premiere last month. If watching a feuding throuple fight and flirt with one another to one of the best scores ever composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross doesn’t sound like your idea of a good time, not to worry: There’s plenty of other new releases to watch this weekend. We’ve got the serial killer crime drama He Went That Way on Hulu, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on VOD, and Madame Web on Netflix, if you’re into that!
Here’s everything new that’s available to watch this weekend!
New on Netflix
Where to watch: Available to stream on Netflix
Genre: Superhero action Run time: 1h 54m Director: S.J. Clarkson Cast: Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced
Sony’s latest entry in its Spidey-less Spidey Universe stars Dakota Johnson as Cassie Webb, a paramedic living in Manhattan who gains the ability to see visions of the future after a near-death experience. When a mysterious superpowered stranger (who was with Cassie’s mom when she was in the Amazon researching spiders right before she died ) begins hunting a trio of young girls, Cassie takes it upon herself to protect them.
From our review :
Madame Web might be the most shameless superhero movie of all time. Far from just the cash-in that it seemed like a few years ago when this movie headlined by an F-tier superhero was first announced, Sony’s latest Marvel offshoot is a two-hour post-credits scene, made only intermittently tolerable by Dakota Johnson’s underappreciated knack for comedy .
Thelma the Unicorn
Genre: Musical comedy Run time: 1h 33m Directors: Jared Hess, Lynn Wang Cast: Brittany Howard, Will Forte, Jemaine Clement
This animated musical comedy follows Thelma (Brittany Howard), a small-time pony that experiences an unexpected makeover into a pink and purple unicorn. Determined to chase her dream of musical stardom, Thelma convinces the entire world that she’s a unicorn, but a jealous narwhal named Nikki (Ally Dixon) becomes bent on stealing back the spotlight.
New on Hulu
He went that way.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Hulu
Genre: Crime drama Run time: 1h 35m Director: Jeffrey Darling Cast: Zachary Quinto, Jacob Elordi, Patrick J. Adams
Jacob Elordi ( Saltburn ) and Zachary Quinto ( Star Trek ) star in this crime thriller about Bobby Falls, a serial killer who hitches a ride with Jim Goodwin, an animal trainer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The trailer hints at the film’s ultimate conclusion, as well as a tense series of events including murder, robbery, and fine dinner food.
The Sweet East
Genre: Road film Run time: 1h 44m Director: Sean Price Williams Cast: Talia Ryder, Earl Cave, Simon Rex
After being separated from her classmates during a school trip, a high school senior named Lillian (Talia Ryder) embarks on an impromptu road journey where she crosses paths with anarchists, skinheads, movie producer, and other eccentric strangers.
New on Starz
The hunger games: ballad of songbirds & snakes.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Starz
Genre: Dystopian action Run time: 2h 37m Director: Francis Lawrence Cast: Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage
Francis Lawrence returns to the world of The Hunger Games to tell the story of the early years of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), who would go on to become the president of Panem and the nemesis of Katniss Everdeen.
Set 60 years before the events of the first film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes recalls the fateful meeting between Coriolanus and Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from District 12 who would leave a profound impact on his life and worldview.
From our review ,
Collins’ book and Lawrence’s movie don’t redo the action of the Hunger Games events; they dissect them, then force us to sit on the Capitol side of the equation. They demand to know why we were even drawn to the love triangle, the pretty dresses , and the themed arenas in the first place. We’ve always been the spectators, after all, watching Katniss’ story from a safe distance. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes shows us what happens if we get too carried away by propaganda, luxury, and the promise of safety. In that way, it’s a fitting end to the franchise — and a fitting end to the way the genre evolved into a beast of its own.
New on Shudder
Nightwatch: demons are forever.
Where to watch: Available to stream on Shudder
Genre: Horror Run time: 1h 50m Director: Ole Bornedal Cast: Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Alex Høgh Andersen
Years after her parents were almost killed by a police inspector-turned-serial killer, Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) accepts a night watch job at the same forensic department where they once worked. Upon confronting her parent’s tormentor, Emma inadvertently reawakens his bloodlust, unleashing a terrible evil that threatens to destroy both her and anyone who gets in the way.
New to rent
Challengers.
Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple , and Vudu
Genre: Sports drama Run time: 2h 11m Director: Luca Guadagnino Cast: Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, Mike Faist
Luca Guadagnino’s sensual sports drama, about a love triangle in professional tennis, has set certain circles of the world on fire since its release in late April and is one of the best movies of the year . Now, you can enjoy it at home.
That script is a terrific three-course meal for Faist and O’Connor. They get to trade off face and heel roles from scene to scene and era to era, as Art and Patrick help and hurt each other in equal measure. But it’s an absolute smorgasbord for Zendaya, who even in starring roles has never been given this much room to stretch. Tashi is a gratifyingly rich character, both righteously angry over the thwarting of her ambitions and cruelly angry at all the men who have the nerve to keep on playing the game that was taken away from her. She’s hungry for affection and withholding it at the same time, by turns sensually curious and coldly dispassionate, ambitious and exhausted, conflicted and confident. She’s the kind of character that media master’s theses are made of, and unpicking Tashi’s conflicting motives and how she integrates them is likely to become a pop culture obsession in the months to come.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Where to watch: available to rent on amazon , apple , and vudu.
Genre: Monster action Run time: 1h 55m Director: Adam Wingard Cast: Godzilla, Kong, Rebecca Hall
The boys are back in town — the boys being Godzilla and Kong, of course. Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard returns for this team-up movie, where the big lads must work together to stop an invasion from Hollow Earth.
Godzilla x Kong (yes, it’s styled like that, like a streetwear collab) is beyond “good” or “bad” or “movies.” It’s an arena show, a pro wrestler shouting in the squared circle, thumping their chest and raising the jumbotron hype meter before doing their signature move. Through brutally efficient pacing that minimizes what the script doesn’t care about (people, mostly) and maximizes what it does (giant monsters doing wrestling moves), it constantly eschews connection in favor of escalation. It’s an achievement in absurd spectacle, a comically silly way to spend $135 million. I hope Warner Bros. keeps burning money this way.
Sasquatch Sunset
Genre: Fantasy Run time: 1h 30m Directors: Nathan Zellner, David Zellner Cast: Riley Keough, Jesse Eisenberg, Christophe Zajac-Denek
An irreverent comedy from the Zellner brothers ( Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter ), Sasquatch Sunset follows a group of four sasquatch as they try and make it in Northern California forest. Along the way, they have to deal with poisonous mushrooms, mountain lions, and relentless sasquatch horniness.
Genre: Horror Run time: 1h 32m Director: Kiah Roache-Turner Cast: Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Ryan Corr
Alyla Browne (who plays a young Furiosa in Greg Miller’s upcoming apocalyptic action film ), stars in this horror-thriller as a rebellious 12-year-old who adopts a small spider after discovering it in her apartment. Simple, right? Well it would be, that is if the spider were just a regular ’ol terrestrial one and not an extraterrestrial arachnid with a penchant for eating birds, small children, and grown adults. Grab the Raid can!

'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' pits Chris Hemsworth against Anya Taylor-Joy. It's a blast
Some movies you feel more than just watch.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is one of those. I watched it in a theater with the volume cranked up seemingly as high as it could go, and I recommend it — when anyone stomps their foot on a gas pedal, which happens often, you feel the horsepower blasting through the speakers.
But George Miller’s latest installment in one of the more creative franchises ever also makes you feel in non-tactile ways. By the time the film has throttled its way to its conclusion, linking it to “ Mad Max: Fury Road ,” for which it serves as a prequel, it will make you feel pretty alarmed about the state of things. This is a world that’s going to hell, if it hasn’t gotten there already. Take notes and act accordingly. Maybe it’s not too late.
What is 'Furiosa' about?
We meet Furiosa, who grows up to be Charlize Theron in “Fury Road,” as a child here, played by Alyla Browne (who is outstanding), out picking fruit. Like the other films, this one is set in the Australian outback, ravaged by apocalypse. But she and her family live in an oasis of sorts, The Green Land, a secret from the rest of the world and its arid miseries.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
She is abducted by the lunatic thugs who seem to populate this world, and a riveting chase scene, with her mother in pursuit, ensues.
'Mad Max: Fury Road review: George Miller never lets up on the gas
It’s fabulous. And we learn a lot about Furiosa along the way — like when she chews her way through the fuel line of the motorcycle her abductor is riding. Eventually, though, she winds up in the hands of Dementus (Chris Hemsworth, with a big fake nose but recognizable Thor-like abs and arms), a dim-witted but showy leader who rules a bunch that are even more dim-witted than he is. (What’s the old saying? I don’t have to be faster than the tiger. I just have to be faster than you.)
Furiosa is an innocent girl when she's captured. This is the story of how she becomes the hardened, one-armed, head-shaved warrior in “Fury Road.” It involves a lot of patience on her part, as well as subterfuge and planning, but mostly it’s about hate — searing hate, toward Dementus. It is a powerful motivation.
Eventually, Furiosa winds up in the Citadel, delivered over to Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme) and his moronic sons Rictus Erectus (Nathan Jones) and Scrotus (Josh Helman). (Miller is positively inspired in his choice of names and costumes — Black Thumb, Toe Jam and the Organic Mechanic are a few of my favorites.)
Anya Taylor-Joy plays Furiosa
As Furiosa grows older eventually Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role, in a seamless transition. At this point she is a hardened warrior, and a committed loner, tough she finds a somewhat kindred spirit in Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke), driver of the trucks that haul supplies. We see the iconic War Rig from “Fury Road” built from the ground up (in time-lapse photography no less), and eventually Miller leads us to the story points that lead into the action of the 2015 film.
Ah, action. There is so much of it — aside from the goofy malapropisms Dementus is given to, there isn’t a lot of dialogue. Action is the language these people speak. High-octane action. (They probably couldn’t hear each other talk anyway.) Like in “Fury Road,” the stunts are spectacular. This truly is what a summer movie looks like — and yes, feels like.
“The question is,” Dementus asks, “do you have what it takes to make it epic?” Miller answers that question with a resounding yes.
'Furiosa' 4 stars

Phoenix suns looking to add a salary cap specialist and a point guard.

Now that coach Mike Budenholzer is in place, the Phoenix Suns are closing in two more additions.
Brooklyn Nets executive Matt Tellem is expected to join the front office in the near future, according to reports by ESPN. Tellem has been the Nets’ vice president of strategy since March, and his salary cap skills could help the Suns navigate their tricky financial future.
A point guard could be on the way, also. Budenholzer seemed to advocate for adding that position at his introductory press conference Friday. The Suns played with out a true point in their disappointing 49-33 season, which ended with a four-game sweep to Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.
“The conversations have been great and there's no doubt that we need to look at the whole roster and talk about point guard," Budenholzer said of his discussions with owner Mat Ishbia and general manager James Jones.
“I’m sure it's a hot-button issue here, whether it's with the media, players or the front office. We need to think about it. We need to be able to play without one. We probably need to be able to have one. We need to be versatile. Play different ways.”

Without a true point guard/distributor, the Suns had trouble finding offensive continuity this season, especially in the fourth quarter. They averaged 2.4 fewer points than their opponents in the fourth quarter, the worst figure in the league this season and the worst by a playoff team in at least 20 years.
The closest comp is Denver, which was a minus-1.9 points in the fourth quarter in 2021-22, when it won 48 games and lost to eventual league champion Golden State in the second round of the playoffs. The Nuggets used Monte Morris as the primary point that season.
The Suns opted to build around their Big Three last season after Ishbia traded for forward Kevin Durant in the 2022-23 season and dealt for guard Bradley Beal in the offseason to go with Devin Booker, but cohesiveness was lacking.
Durant and Booker averaged 21.7 points per game and Beal averaged 18.2 points per game, but all three are scorers first. Booker and Beal were often used at the point, and Durant also had ball-handling responsibilities.

Reports surfaced that Ishbia was against adding a point guard to the roster lest it lessen of the effectiveness all those three. A lack of lateral quickness also hurt on the defensive end.
The Suns’ 1.8 assist/turnover ratio was 25th in the league, a drastic difference from the 2022-23 unit that with points Chris Paul and Cameron Payne was third in the league with a 2.02 ratio.
A two-time NBA Coach of the Year, Budenholzer led Milwaukee to the playoffs in the last six of his seven seasons there before he was removed after a first-round playoff loss to Miami in 20-22-23.
Bucenholzer had one of the best two-way point guards in the league in Jrue Holiday in his final three seasons, from 2020-2023. Holiday was at his best in the 2021 postseason when he averaged 16.6 points, 8.3 assists and 1.5 turnovers in 24 games. The Bucks beat the Suns in six games in the finals.

Without Budenholzer and Holiday this season, the Bucks went through two coaches and went 49-33 in the regular season before being eliminated by Indiana in the first round of the playoffs. Holiday was traded to Boston when the Bucks added Damian Lillard in the offseason.
Budenholzer, who was hired 13 days after the Minnesota sweep and two days after Frank Vogel was fired, signed a five-year contact worth more than $50 million, according to reports. Vogel had four years remaining on his five-year, $31 million contract.
“I'm excited about working with this roster and these players,” Budenholzer said. “We have great players. And with great players come great expectations. I think we embrace that.”
How the Suns add a point guard is an open question.
Tellem, a son of former super agent and current Detroit Pistons chairman Arn Tellem, will be faced with a roster that as it currently stands has very little flexibility because of the big-money additions of Durant and Beal and the 2022 designated veteran extension to Booker.
Center Jusuf Nurkic is one of five Suns' starters under contract for at least two more seasons. (AP ... [+] Photo/Mark J. Terrill)
Durant had two years remaining on his contract, Beal three and Booker four. All are in the $50 million per season range.
Starters Jusuf Nurkic and Grayson Allen also are under contract. Nurkic’s deal worth $37.5 million expires after the 2025-26 season, and Allen signed a four-year, $70 million extension that includes a player option for 2027-28.
The Suns enter 2024-25 with a $205.9 million payroll, the largest the in the league, and are one of three teams of the second apron of the luxury tax. Because of their situation, they cannot sign a player to mid-level exception, cannot aggregate contracts in a trade, and they cannot take in more in salary than they send in a trade.
The Suns have the 22nd pick in the 2024 draft but also had virtually no draft capital to deal. They traded their 2025, 2027 and 2029 first-round picks to acquire Durant.
“I would coach this team if it was on the moon. I would coach this team if it was in Alaska. If these players were in Denmark. ... I would go anywhere to coach this team," Budenholzer said.
