Long and Short Essays On Love for Students and Kids in English

We have given one long essay on love of 400-500 words and one short essay on love of 200 words. The long essay on love is for students of classes 7,8,9, and 10 and competitive exam aspirants. Short Essay on Love is suitable for students of Classes 1,2,3,4,5 and 6.

Long Essay on Love 500 Words in English

Love is the many emotions that we experienced when affection and care showed to us. It is not just romance. Love can mean many things and can vary from person to person. Honesty, care, and trust constitute love. Everyone wants to be loved. It gives them happiness and makes them feel like they matter. We love for many things, and the love we think varies throughout our lives.

Our first experience of love is at birth. The bond that we form with our parents is one of the purest. Parents love us from the moment we are born, and this love only grows stronger. They care for us and help us improve. A child always needs the warmth and love of their parents. As we grow older, we learn to become more independent and do not need our parents as much. However, they are always there when we need them, and they will ever love us. As they grow older, they need our help and attention. Moving on with our lives and forgetting about them affects them, and they feel lonely. We need to be there for them the same way they were with us.

Siblings may not always get along and fight constantly, but the love between them is the strongest. Despite all the insults and arguments, they will always defend us and keep us safe. The love between them is unspoken but still felt; the expression of love is not the way we think it to be. Though siblings may not say, “I love you,” we know that they do. Grandparents shower their love for their grandkids. They also want to spend time with them and create memories, and they are there for us no matter what. They always want to see their grandchildren happy.

Love is the base for romantic relationships; two partners who care and love each other. They trust each other and try to work out their differences when they fight. Friendships also have the essence of love. Though it may not be romantic, friends still love us. They care for us, make us happy, and care about us. Friendships based on popularity and status does not last long.

Friendships require trust and someone who you can open to without thinking twice. You make the best memories and have the most fun. Most of all, a friend is someone you can count on; that is love. Sometimes, these relationships may not work out. Rather than feeling wrong and shameful, we must cherish the moments we had and not hate anybody. Love can be towards nature: appreciating what Earth has given us and protecting them with care.

Loving yourself is the most important. When someone acts differently from what others perceive as normal, they are often left out.

We must learn to accept who we are and the way we look. Once we accept ourselves, we can truly love. Love is not just about other people, but it is also about loving ourselves first. Love is also accepting others for who they are, not what we expect them to be.

Love Essay

They love us even when we lead our own lives and do not depend on them much. The love between parents and their children is pure. Grandparents love their grandchildren. They tell us their childhood stories and will do anything to make their grandchildren smile.

We show love for our siblings. Though siblings fight, they always love each other. Love can also be for our friends, who play with us and we have loads of fun. They are still there for us, no matter what. Love can happen between two people who care about each other and happy. Defining Success: --> The Power of Love in Protecting Children

love and care essay

The Protective Power of Love

In the world of parenting, the words “love” and “protection” hold real power — especially when it comes to taking care of children as they grow. The power of love is life-changing. Love is what young people crave. Protection stirs up feelings of strength and positivity. It makes children feel safe and secure. But did you know, when you show your children how much you love them, it provides one of the most protective forces in their lives? It’s the main element within balanced parenting — a parenting style that has proven key in raising competent, successful children, teens, and young adults.

What Teens Want

Adolescents want strong relationships with their parents. They want to know they are loved. We know teens rely on parents and caregivers both for emotional support and for clear guidance. Don’t be fooled if teens roll their eyes or want to walk a few feet ahead of you. They still count on you. They trust you. They need you. By showing them how much you love them you are building stronger and more resilient children. Not only that, but the protection that comes from your love will last into adulthood.

Consider Balanced Parenting

Over the past 30 years, plenty of research has been done showing the important relationship between parenting styles and teenage development. The results are consistent . Overwhelmingly, parents who chose balanced parenting were successful in raising capable kids with a positive sense of self-worth. What do we mean by balanced parenting ? Balanced parents use the power of love and show their kids how much they care for and about them. They are warm and supportive. They set high expectations but are there for their kids if or when they fail. They set clear limits and monitor boundaries. They generally know what their children are up to when it comes to whereabouts, activities, and friends. They are flexible to meet the needs of their children. They avoid a more rigid, “Because those are the rules,” approach to parenting. They believe communication between a parent and a child is a two-way street. They understand that parents have experience but recognize that young people also possess wisdom about their world.

This style of parenting has been shown to raise successful children. This includes achieving higher academic success, making positive choices when it comes to new opportunities and building greater resilience . It’s shown to help them make wise, healthy decisions about drugs , sex , and other risky behaviors . That is the power of love providing some pretty important protection!

As great as that protection is, it will have its limits if we don’t set good examples. If our teens see parents and caring adults taking risks, they may take risks as well. Our actions show them what’s normal. Do you smoke at home? Don’t be surprised if your teens try smoking. Do you use drugs? There’s a higher chance of teens using them if they think you are using them. Telling your teen one thing (“I love you and want you to be safe. Don’t do drugs.”) and doing another (smoking marijuana yourself) sends mixed messages that weaken the best of your parenting.

Don’t Overprotect

It’s hard to pull back on protective instincts — especially if you’ve been using them for a while. But you need to try to do so. It’s a problem when the need to keep kids safe sends a message that we don’t trust them. That we don’t think they are able or qualified to get things done. That we don’t feel confident in their abilities. Our “overprotection” doesn’t protect them at all. Rather, it does the opposite.

Think about protection and trust going hand in hand. If we trust our children we protect them. If we distrust them, we undermine their confidence. We leave them hanging. Instead, we need to let them know we are confident they have the capacity to make the right decisions. We remain available to guide them. Our presence (and guidance when asked) gives them the confidence to succeed both at home and eventually, once they leave home.

Trusting that your kids will get through challenges or ultimately figure things out does not mean ignoring really threatening situations. If something challenges safety or morality , step in. Otherwise, let life teach its lessons and trust that preparation is protection for the future.

Teens who know they are loved can handle whatever life throws at them. They always have stable, caring relationships to fall back on. Our love and support is protective. It provides the safety and security teens need to make it in the world.

Express Love

Show your children you love them. Don’t be afraid to say the words. There’s no doubt our lives are affected (both as parents and children) when we are “under the influence” of love. Think of love as an ever-present, positive influence in promoting well-being.

The feeling of mutual care and concern among two or more groups of people is described as love. A certain amount of love and care is essential for every living being, be it human or animal. I believe that love is also omnipresent, it is everywhere in some form or the other. No matter how tough a person appears from outside, there has to be someone whom he/she loves dearly. A soul without love is like a pitcher without water- useful to none. Love is the essence of life and the most important feeling around which it revolves.

The essays will be helpful to you in your speech giving, essay writing or debate competitions.

Short Essay on Love – Essay 1 (200 words)

Love is an emotion that we all yearn for. Right from the day we are born we crave love. Little babies who just enter this world are unaware about what goes on around here. If there is one thing that they understand, it is love. They understand nothing else but love and crave for it. They long to be with their parents and grandparents as they can feel the love and warmth by their touch and behaviour. They hesitate and cry when a stranger picks them as the love quotient is lower or at times not there at all.

The mother-child relationship is said to be the strongest. The sole reason for it is love. There is immense love involved. The mother loves the child selflessly and the later reciprocates this love. As we grow up, we make friends, are introduced to teachers, relatives, neighbours and many other people. What is it that draws or repels us from a person? It is his nature. A person with a kind and loving nature is loved by all.

For instance, a teacher who is loving and supporting is loved by the students while one who is harsh is not liked by anyone. Similarly, we love those relatives who love us and treat us nicely. We look forward to meet them and feel happy in their company.

Thus, love is the basis of every relationship. A place where people love each other is peaceful and beautiful.

Essay on Love and Affection – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Love and affection are often used simultaneously. These are both essential to build long lasting relationships. Relationships those have love and affection along with other things such as mutual trust, honesty and care are the best relationships. These emotions are not only essential for romantic relationships but to strengthen familial bond and friendships too.

Difference between Love and Affection

Love and affection are two different emotions though they often overlap. While affection can be defined as a liking for another person owing to the qualities he/ she possesses love is a deeper emotion. Loving a person means accepting them with all their vice and virtues. It involves caring for them and standing by them during their thick and thin.

True love is selfless and pure. It does not demand anything in return. However, a relationship where the flow of giving and receiving love is in equal balance lasts longer and is more satisfying.

Showing Affection Essential for Loving Relationships

Just as love is essential to build a long lasting relationship so is affection. Love without affection can make any relationship dull and lifeless. Showing affection towards the other person is of utmost importance. This is true for every relationship. It is the key to a happy relationship. For instance, parents love their children. They make sacrifices and fulfill all their duties and responsibilities towards their children selflessly out of their love for them.

However, merely paying the children’s school fee, buying dresses for them and cooking food for them is not enough. Children long for love and affection. In order to develop a strong parent-child bond it is essential to spend time with them, listen to them, give them attention and make them feel loved.

Where there is love there is affection and where there is affection there is room for love to penetrate. Love and affection often coincide and depend on each other. Both are essential for a loving and fulfilling relationship.

Essay about Love of Family – Essay 3 (400 words)

Love is the basis of a happy family life. It brings the family members closer to each other and creates a strong bond. It is natural for us to have an inherent love for our family members. Whether this love grows with time or the relationships turns bitter depends largely on how well the elders in the family nurture their children.

The Parent-Child Bond

Parent-child bond is one of the deepest and strongest bonds. This is because is it based on pure love. Parents love their children with all their heart. On the other hand, children feel the closest to their parents. They cannot imagine their life without their parents. Parents help and support their children at every step in life. They may be strict with their children and may even scold them at times. However, it is all for the good of their children. All these emotions are born out of love.

Love and Respect for Grandparents

Grandparents shower immense love and affection on their grandchildren. They love their grandchildren with all their heart and always look forward to spend time with them. The bonding between grandparents and grandchildren is impeccable. This is because the love between them is limitless. Grandparents can go to any extent to make their grandchildren smile. They always want to see their little ones happy.

Everything they do reflects their love for their grandchildren. Grandmothers are more than happy to prepare delicious food for their grandchildren while grandfathers take them out for walk and share their experiences to help them become more aware and able in life. Grandchildren respect their grandparents because of their love for them and not because of fear. This is a true mark of respect.

Sibling Love and Bonding

No matter how much the siblings fight with each other, they love one another dearly. This can clearly be seen when an outsider behaves rudely with their siblings. Siblings share a deep bond and are inseparable. The bond grows deeper as they grow up. They are always there for each other.

The parents play an important role here. It is the duty of the parents to help their children bond well with each other. There are some families where there is sibling rivalry. This can largely be attributed to bad parenting or unintentional negligence on the part of the parents.

A family where love blooms is an ideal family. Children raised in a loving atmosphere develop a loving nature and spread love and joy all around while those who are raised in dysfunctional families turn bitter towards everything in life.

Essay about Love and Relationships – Essay 4 (500 words)

Love is an essential ingredient for nurturing any relationship. Whether it is a parent-child relationship, friendship, sibling relationship or a romantic relationship – love is one of the main factors that keep any relationship alive. Relationships without love are usually short-lived as they do not render happiness.

Love Binds People

Love is a beautiful and intense emotion that has the power to bring people closer and bind them together. Here is how love impacts people and relationships:

  • Parent-Child Relationship

Parents are known to love their children selflessly and limitlessly. However, not every child is lucky enough to have been blessed with loving and caring parents. Some parents are so self absorbed that all they think about is themselves. They care about their career and social life more than their children. Children feel neglected in families where both the parents are self engrossed. Lack of love hampers their growth and development. Children who are loved are more joyous and content. Besides, they develop a deep bond with their parents.

Similarly, parents need love and attention as they grow old. Lack of it can affect their physical as well as mental health negatively.

  • Sibling Relationships

Love is of utmost importance among siblings. Siblings who truly love each other are there to support one another at every step. They develop a sense of security as they know someone is always there to stand by them. On the other hand, sibling rivalry develops when there is lack of love in this relationship.

  • Romantic Relationships

Romantic relationships are born out of love. Love keeps them alive and the lack of it can be quite frustrating. Couples often drift apart as love among them begins to fade.

Friendship born out of love is the strongest. Many people become friends with others because of their social standing or have other selfish motifs. Such friendships do not last long as the true intention of the person is revealed soon. Only those friendships that are based on love last long.

Love alone is not enough

While love forms the basis of any relationship, the feeling of love alone is not enough for a happy relationship. There are a number of other things that are needed to nurture a relationship. For instance, parents must render a feeling of safety and security to their children besides loving them dearly. This can be achieved only when they fulfil all their responsibilities properly. The children on the other hand must not only love their parents but also respect and obey them to build a healthy relationship.

Similarly, in a romantic relationship, love coupled with trust can build a strong and long lasting relationship. Love without trust can make one feel vulnerable.

Love must be Kept Alive

We feel love for some people and are naturally drawn to them. This is how we make friends, build romantic relationships and connect with our neighbours and extended family members. Getting into different relationships is easy however maintaining them is difficult. Relationships can last long only if we add a dash of other emotions along with love. Humour, trust, honesty, care, kindness and respect are some of these emotions.

Love brings people closer and has the power to make any relationship beautiful. We must recognize the importance of love and never hesitate to express it in relationships.

Long Essay on Love for Nature – Essay 5 (600 words)

As soon as the word nature is mentioned, the images of trees, mountains, valleys and rivers pop up into our mind. Nature encompasses all the beautiful things available naturally without any human intervention. We too are a part of the nature. Being in the natural surroundings full of tress, plants and other marvels of nature such as sea, mountain and river is a joyous experience. Man’s love for nature can very well be seen by his longing to visit hill stations and other places that boast of beautiful natural surroundings.

Be One with Nature

Nature is beautiful. The snow covered mountains, the green valleys, the spectacular waterfalls, the ever-so-beautiful moon, the calm night sky and the restless sea – these are all breathtaking. The beauty of these natural wonders is loved by all. People visit far and wide to view nature’s beauty. While everyone appreciates nature and wishes to spend time in the beautiful natural surroundings not everyone has the ability to be one with it.

One can experience the true beauty and power of nature only by being one with it. True love for nature works on a deeper level. Nature loves us as much as we love nature. Somebody who becomes one with nature can experience the true joy of life. Being one with the nature helps connect with our own self. It enlightens and empowers us. It has the power to help us recognize and understand our purpose of life.

Nature Loves Selflessly and Abundantly

We love our family and friends. We are there for them in the hour of need and try to do the best we can to help them. However, often we get disappointed when we do not get as much love and care in return. It is quite natural to feel this way. However, such expectations and feelings of being left out often ruins relationships.

Many times, people break their ties with their loved ones. Sibling rivalries, divorce cases and estranged family relationships are mostly a result of unfulfilled expectations. While it is alright to expect however we must not hold grudges against people who do not come up to our expectations.

Here, we can take a cue from the nature. Nature gives from an abundant heart. It does not worry about receiving anything in return. The sun rises every day, the wind blows carrying the pollens from one place to another without worrying about whether they will sprout or not, rain falls without thinking whether the rain water would be wasted or put to good use and the trees give us shade without thinking about whether we would return the favour by watering them.

Just like nature, we must also spread love and joy in abundance. We must love others selflessly without worrying about whether they will love us back with same intensity. We must do our bit and not stress about the behaviour of others.

Show Your Love for Nature

Nature loves us abundantly and we all claim that we love it too. But do we really love nature or are we just attracted to its beauty? If we truly loved nature we would not spoil it. The fact is that we are deteriorating our natural surroundings with every passing day. The increasing levels of air, land, water and other forms of pollution are causing extreme damage to our beautiful nature.

If we truly love nature, we must do our bit to keep our surroundings clean and bring down the pollution level.

Nature renders positive energy and helps us rejuvenate. It renders strength and makes the world beautiful. It is sad that we human beings are ruining our beautiful natural surroundings in the name of development. We must show our love for nature by maintaining its beauty.

From songs and poems to novels and movies, romantic love is one of the most enduring subjects for artworks through the ages. But what about the science?

Historical, cultural and even evolutionary evidence suggests love existed during ancient times and across many parts of the world. Romantic love has been found to exist in 147 of 166 cultures looked at in one study.

The complexity of love has much to do with how people experience it differently and how it can change over time.

Like, love, or ‘in love’?

Psychological research over the past 50 years has investigated the differences between liking someone, loving someone and being “in love”.

Liking is described as having positive thoughts and feelings towards someone and finding that person’s company rewarding. We often also experience warmth and closeness towards the people we like. In some instances we choose to be emotionally intimate with these people.

love and care essay

When we love someone we experience the same positive thoughts and experiences as when we like a person. But we also experience a deep sense of care and commitment towards that person.

Being “ in love ” includes all the above but also involves feelings of sexual arousal and attraction. However, research into people’s own views of love suggests that not all love is the same.

Passionate vs companionate love

Romantic love consists of two types: passionate and companionate love. Most romantic relationships, whether they be heterosexual or same sex , involve both these parts.

Passionate love is what people typically consider being “in love”. It includes feelings of passion and an intense longing for someone, to the point they might obsessively think about wanting to be in their arms.

love and care essay

The second part is known as companionate love . It’s not felt as intensely, but it’s complex and connects feelings of emotional intimacy and commitment with a deep attachment toward the romantic partner.

How does love change over time?

Research looking at changes in romantic love over time typically finds that although passionate love starts high, it declines over the course of a relationship.

There are various reasons for this.

As partners learn more about each other and become more confident in the long-term future of the relationship, routines develop. The opportunities to experience novelty and excitement can also decline, as can the frequency of sexual activity . This can cause passionate love to subside.

love and care essay

Although a reduction in passionate love is not experienced by all couples, various studies report approximately 20-40% of couples experience this downturn. Of couples who have been married in excess of ten years, the steepest downturn is most likely to occur over the second decade .

Life events and transitions can also make it challenging to experience passion. People have competing responsibilities which affect their energy and limit the opportunities to foster passion. Parenthood is an example of this.

Read more: Love by design: when science meets sex, lust, attraction and attachment

In contrast, companionate love is typically found to increase over time.

Although research finds most romantic relationships consist of both passionate and companionate love, it’s the absence or reductions in companionate love, moreso than passionate love, that can negatively affect the longevity of a romantic relationship.

But what’s the point of love?

Love is an emotion that keeps people bonded and committed to one another. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, love evolved to keep the parents of children together long enough for them to survive and reach sexual maturity .

Read more: What is this thing called love?

The period of childhood is much longer for humans than other species. As offspring rely on adults for many years to survive and to develop the skills and abilities needed for successful living, love is especially important for humans.

Without love, it’s difficult to see how the human species could have evolved .

love and care essay

A biological foundation too

Not only is there an evolutionary foundation to love, love is rooted in biology. Neurophysiological studies into romantic love show that people who are in the throes of passionate love experience increased activation in brain regions associated with reward and pleasure.

Read more: Love lockdown: the pandemic has put pressure on many relationships, but here's how to tell if yours will survive

In fact, the brain regions activated are the same as those activated by cocaine.

These regions release chemicals such as oxytocin, vasopressin and dopamine, which produce feelings of happiness and euphoria that are also linked to sexual arousal and excitement.

Interestingly, these brain regions are not activated when thinking about non-romantic relationships such as friends. These findings tell us that liking someone is not the same as being in love with someone.

What’s your love style?

Research has found three primary styles of love. First coined by psychologist John Lee , the love styles are eros, ludus and storge. These styles include people’s beliefs and attitudes about love and act as a guide for how to approach romantic relationships.

love and care essay

This style of love refers to erotic love and is focused on physical attraction and engaging in sex, the quick development of strong and passionate feelings for another and intense intimacy.

This style involves being emotionally distant and often involves “game-playing”. It’s not surprising people who endorse this love style are unlikely to commit, feel comfortable ending relationships and often start a new relationship before ending the current one.

Storge is often regarded as a more mature form of love. Priority is given to having a relationship with a person who has similar interests, affection is openly expressed and there is less emphasis on physical attractiveness. People high on storge love are trusting of others and are not needy or dependent on others.

Or is a mixture more your style?

You may see yourself in more than one of these styles.

Evidence suggests some people possess a mixture of the three main love styles; these mixtures were labelled by Lee as mania, pragma and agape.

Read more: Darling, I love you ... from the bottom of my brain

Manic love includes intense feelings for a partner as well as worry about committing to the relationship. Pragmatic love involves making sensible relationship choices in finding a partner who will make a good companion and friend. Agape is a self-sacrificing love that is driven by a sense of duty and selflessness.

love and care essay

Why do you love the way you do?

A person’s love style has little to do with their genetics . Rather, it’s associated with the development of personality and a person’s past relationship experiences.

Some studies have found people who are high on dark traits, such as narcissism, psychopathy and machiavellianism, endorse more of a ludus or pragma love style.

Read more: There are six styles of love. Which one best describes you?

People who have an insecure attachment style , involving a high need for validation and preoccupation with relationship partners, endorse more mania love, while those who are uncomfortable with intimacy and closeness do not endorse eros love.

No matter the differences in the way love is experienced, one thing remains common for all: we as humans are social animals who have a deep fascination for it.

Mother is the most selfless person in this world who starts loving her children even before they come into this world. Nothing could be compared to a mother’s love in this world as it is the purest form of love. Mother is like an angel for her child, who always loves her child and supports him/her. For every child, his mother has a special place in his heart because she is the first person the child sees after his birth. This is the reason why a child and a mother have a special bond between them. But not all people are fortunate enough to have mother love in their life due to many reasons. Those who have their mother with them must love and respect her.

Mother is the greatest gift for a child by God. It is the mother who always loves her children without expecting anything from them in return. It won't be wrong to say that women are inherently good mothers, but they realize the power of mother-love when they become a mother. A mother can do anything to protect her child, and she is the primary support of a child. She not only morally supports the child but also prepares her child to be a better person in life.

A mother plays many roles in her child's life from being her child's first friend to a mentor who always guides him/her, and she dedicatedly plays all these roles without complaining or hesitating.

Mother as a Best Friend

A mother is the first best friend of her child who instantly forms a special bond with the child just after his/her birth. She understands all the needs of her children and always tries to fulfill them. My mother is also my best friend. In fact, I can share all my secrets and desires with him. She always understands me and supports me. We play many games together, and our favorite game is Ludo. Many times she happily loses the game so I can win. She knows what I like and always makes me happy by cooking my favorite food. I am fortunate to have my mom as my best friend in my life.

Mother as a Mentor

A mother is not just a first best friend of a child but also his/her mentor who always supports and guides her children to achieve all the success in life. A great mentor is one who always teaches you what is right and what is wrong. A mentor not only supports you but also becomes strict with you when required. And we all can see these traits in our mothers.

My mother is truly my mentor as she not only guides me in every phase of my life but also supports me whenever I need her. When I make any mistake, she becomes strict with me to make me understand my mistake. But soon she showers her love on me and always supports me in my decision. She helps me in my studies and asks me to be serious about my career. She teaches me both cultural and moral values. There cannot be a better mentor than a mother because she knows what is right for you and always prefers the best for you.

Mother as a Caretaker

No one can care for us as a mother does. She selflessly takes care of her child since the day he is born. She knows all the needs of her child and can do anything to fulfill them. She is always there for her children. Whenever we get sick or ill, It is our mother who takes care of us without concern about her health. For a mother, the well being of her children is the utmost important, and she always ensures that her children remain safe and protected wherever they are.

A mother provides all the comfort to her child. It is the mother who makes the home cheerful and safe for children. She is like a superwoman who can manage both household work and her responsibilities towards her children. Talking about my mother, she is adorable and compassionate. She loves all my friends and me. Whenever I get sick, she gets concerned about me. She always takes care of my health and my needs. I love her the most and cannot imagine my life without her.

Mother as a Special Person of Our Life

After God, it is our mother who has the most special place in our hearts and our lives. Since the birth of a child, a mother forms a precious and special bond with him. Without thinking about herself, she thinks about her child and his happiness. She works day and night for her children so that she can make them happy. Motherhood is an integral part of a woman's life, and she selflessly gives her best to it.

A newborn child recognizes her mother from her unique fragrance. And before we start speaking, our mother understands our needs through our actions. This is all because a mother and a child share a special bond, which cannot be described in words. All a mother wants is the betterment of her child and to achieve that, sometimes she supports her child and sometimes becomes strict with him. But her intentions are always pure and honest. She always wants the best for us, and she does everything to give us the best.

When we grow, we want to spend our lives on our terms and in doing so, many times we misunderstand our parents. We become selfish sometimes and fail to understand her love, but she never complains or demands anything from us. All she wants is some respect and love from her child, and every child must provide that to her.

Mother’s love is the purest form of love in this World, and Mother is the greatest blessing for a child by God. As a child, it is our responsibility to value the sacrifice and efforts of our mother because all she wants is the betterment of her child. We are very fortunate to have a mother in our life, and we must respect our mother. We should give her all the happiness and love because she deserves all of that in return for her selfless love for us.

Our right to be loved, show love, and to love ourselves

Disability intimacy: essays on love, care, and desire , edited by alice wong.

Alaina is a 39-year-old white woman w blond hair and glasses, wearing a turquoise shirt. She has a friendly, alert expression

The unorthodox dedication that fronts disabled writer, editor, and activist Alice Wong’s new collection, Disability Intimacy: Essays on Love, Care, and Desire, fits with her signature brash, tender, unruly style: “For me. I love you very much. You deserve everything you desire.”

The idea that disabled people have every right not only to be loved but to love ourselves and to live lush, happy lives is unfortunately still a surprising one to many people, and it’s the perfect opener for Wong’s third book. Like her previous collection Disability Visibility and her Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Memoir , this book defies categorization: it’s a mix of essays, poetry, photos, letters, conversations, and interviews that both welcome and challenge us, from caregiving to kink.

Some contributors offer the details of their disability (everything from ADHD, blindness, and cerebral palsy to endometriosis or losing a limb) and some don’t, or they unfold the information in oblique and gradual ways. This reflects an important truth: despite the pervasive belief that we are easy to recognize and categorize, disabled people live complex lives and we’ll tell our stories if and when we’re ready. We don’t owe it to anyone to look, act, or desire in a certain way.

Intimacy beyond love and sex

Sex and romance (spanning hookups, BDSM, masturbation, sex work, dating, marriage, and breakups) are key pieces of Disability Intimacy , and these honest, holistic, first-person views are long overdue in a world that tends to infantilize, desexualize, or fetishize disabled people. Just look at the popular platform of wife-and-husband collaborators Hannah and Shane Burcaw. Shane has spinal muscular atrophy and uses a wheelchair; they often get nasty responses from people who don’t believe that his nondisabled wife could possibly love him.

But Wong’s new collection goes beyond the most obvious connotations of “intimacy” to dive deep into many realms of connection, including pregnancy, parenting, and foster care; friendship; scholarship; and activism. There are even two stories about animals: Emilie L. Gossiaux writes an ode to her guide dog, and Ada Hubrig shares what she learned from Rosasharon, a beloved cat who weathered lifelong illness alongside her.

“For the first time, I was completely comfortable with my disability around another. I knew that I didn’t have to act strong or tough or pretend,” she says. “Rosasharon and I could simply be with each other … I didn’t understand, until Rosasharon was part of my life, how necessary and important it is to be in community with others who experience disability, to share space with others who experience life in nonnormative ways.”

Covid, care, and solitude

In “Care During COVID: Photo Essay on Interdependence” Kennedy Healy and Marley Molkentin collaborate on a frank, tender, and informative photo series documenting their caregiving relationship. Many Disability Intimacy pieces dwell deeply on the ongoing pandemic and its realities for disabled people, which is both sobering and refreshing in a world of contemporary media striving to ignore Covid.

Elliot Kukla reframes “laziness” in an essay about parenting, and “middle-aged, crip autistic nonbinary brown femme” Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha dives into the luxurious joys of solitude and autonomy, living alone as intimacy with the self. “I was crushing on that feral autistic wolf femme solitude like a perfect date,” they write. “I had not known how to say that I wanted, needed this.”

Prosthetics and archives

Ashley Shew’s “The Leg Chapter” details life with a prosthetic leg, and the space between her disabled identity and her choice to disclose it: “With my leg, I look ambulatory … people can forget for a time that I am disabled.” But then they might assume she can climb a long staircase. “Passing is its own burden: to avoid being fully seen, but also to avoid being discounted,” she decides.

Gracen Brilmyer examines “access intimacy in archives” by asking how we make archives, who is in them, and who can access them—and how this affects our view of society over time. It’s essential reading for any scholar. This collection also has plenty to satisfy art-lovers, with reflections on dance, beadwork, collage, photography, and poetry through a disability lens.

Embracing crip wisdom

In recent years, disability activists have reclaimed the term “crip” in myriad forms, and it’s all over this collection. Some writers dwell on “crip time”, the idea of life on a flexible, undefined schedule that resists the capitalist business-day rush in favor of bodies or brains that have their own tempo—a concept I’m trying to bring more into my own personal and professional life.

Ashley Volion and Akemi Nishida reflect on “crip wisdom”: the unique know-how emerging from “everyday experiences of disabled, sick, Mad, fatigued, pained, Deaf, blind, and/or neurodivergent people.” Crip wisdom may sound like an oxymoron to an ableist society, Nishida continues, but “this disability genius-ness is totally our fuck-you to those who see our lives as trivial and valueless in a very eugenic way.”

Love from the inside out

Carrie Wade’s “Know Me Where It Hurts” considers sex, kink, and cerebral palsy, echoing the world behind Wong’s opening dedication. “Yes, sex with a disability is a tough sell, but not (just) for the reasons people assume. In my experience, the hardest part isn’t convincing somebody else you’re desirable—it’s convincing yourself that your body is worth pleasing.”

Disability Intimacy explores love from the inside out: not just the ways the world can and should meet disabled people, but the intrinsic value we all have, and the collective liberatory possibilities of our own pleasures and self-acceptance. That shouldn’t be a surprising message, but it’s a necessary one.

Redemption In Crime And Punishment Essay

However, this is not uncommon in St. Petersburg. Dostoevsky captures this peculiar [manner by comparing it] to… the imperial bureaucracy exerting itself to westernize the country from above… with] the turbulent and seditious ‘proletariat of undergraduates’… [who] strove to effect the same end from below” (Rahv 106). It is in this pressured city that we see the utter poverty in bars, the streets, and even hotels. It is this “special Petersburg stench” that is so appealing to Raskolnikov (Dostoevsky 2). He sees a place where he may hide from his problems and not have to rely on others caring for him. While he believes that he can escape in solitude, he is abruptly shaken of this misconception when he receives word from his mother.

This angers Raskolnikov exceptionally and he is furious that she could be so naive and foolish with her acceptance of such a selfish man’s proposal. His care for them is so extreme, that he thought to himself that he would have “murdered Luzhin” if he had seen him on the street (Dostoevsky 43). He thinks this since he wishes to save them from Luzhin’s manipulative and condescending grasp. However, this is the extent of his love for his family. He proceeds to reject them after their arrival to St. Petersburg and again after his committing the murder.

He is very cold towards them and continues to alienate himself from them. He feels like he is unworthy of their love since he has sinned and yet they still support him, unknowing of what he has done. He treats his friend Razumihin even worse than his family Razumihin is a tutor, who loves his family, and does everything he can to help Raskolnikov in his time of need. Raskolnikov responds to this with short and brutal retorts. He shows no mercy on his friend and does his best to push him away, which has little effect on Razumihin.

Some people watch the Olympics for the events. Others watch for the hot athletes.

This is nothing new. Going all the way back to the first century, the orator Dio Chrysostom praised the “beauty” of the boxer Melankomas, who competed in the ancient Greek athletic games .

That same feeling resonates in 2024. A number of participants in the Paris Summer Olympics have distinguished themselves for things beyond their athletic talent. In an extreme case, a pole-vaulter gained a great deal of attention — some might say notoriety — for failing in a unique way. Others caught the public’s attention through moments of love or kindness — a different but equally palpable form of beauty.

There are numerous options to choose from, but here are 10 moments of beauty at the games.
