Running a successful record label is like running any other successful business, first and foremost you need a plan.

Every business I have started has begun with a plan. It doesn't need to be fifty pages worth of the minutiae account details but it is important to write down what your goals are for the first 12 months.

It's not just the final result that is important, the  process of creating a business plan is equally important as it forces you to make realistic decisions on how you are going to move forward and make the label a success .

We can keep things simple and the whole document can be no longer than 6 brief pages. The main goal of the plan is to help clearly define what your brand will look like, which areas of music you want to focus on, and create a short summary that you can use to explain the label to new industry contacts.

In some countries you need a business plan if you are opening a business bank account. Some distributors also require a business plan before considering working with you, and you will definitely need one if you are an electronic record label and want a Beatport label account.

I would suggest before starting a label that you have at least three releases planned, with the first one ready to go.  By ready to go, I mean you have a finished single or EP of music that is fully mixed down, mastered and ready to go out to the public without any more changes. The business plan will focus on these first three releases.

As you progress at The Label Machine, your business plan will change too, and it should. It is meant as a reference document that you can use to show others that you have a plan and well thought out goals.

Below is a brief description of each section. Follow along and edit each section as we go along.

This is the title section and front page of your business plan. This simply states your 

  • Record label name
  • Business address
  • Email address
  • Phone number

This is the section that will summarise the main objectives of your label. This section will actually be written last. After you have completed the rest of the document, you need to come back and s ummarise it into a short paragraph here.

Zonderling Records is an electronic record label based out of Seattle, that aims to represent a genre of music heavy influenced by early rave, garage, jungle, and grime. We will produce limited edition runs of vinyl via vinylised.com, use interesting marketing ideas such as cassette mixtapes alongside traditional press and marketing channels.

2. Business overview

Introduction:  In this section you want to introduce the key people who are involved in the label and what experience, qualifications and training they might have, along with where you will be based and the future goals of the record label.

Joe and Rich have been involved with dance music for a long time and have over 4 years experience in music production and running small music related businesses. After releasing on various record labels in the past, the next logical step, to take their careers in the music business to the next level is to start a record label. The label will be Seattle based to begin with, but has the potential to be based out in LA within a few years of trading. Music will be the only product sold to begin with, but eventually the record label will be transformed into a brand big enough to sell clothing and other non-music related products .

Current position:  This is a summary of where you are right now with your music plans .

So far, Zondiling Records has the first release signed which is a Remix EP of Joe and Rich’s previous releases. ‘Juke da Luke’ and 'Pressure Fresh' have been singled out as potential first outside signings amongst other potentials such as ‘Idle Kids’ and ‘Origins of 90’

Growth plan:  This is a summary explaining how you aim to grow your record label with your financial goals

After releasing our first three EP’s we will expand into more releases from other artists, pulling remix favours to associate as many established acts to validate the label as possible. Using Joe and Rich’s releases will help to attract an established audience to the label initially. After a year, we aim to be signing artists exclusively under 360 deals and pulling in profit from the labels merchandise as well.

3. Strengths, Opportunities and Core Values

Strengths and Opportunities: This is where you will list your strengths and opportunities as a record label. It gives you an opportunity to create a USP and critical success factors . If you have something unique that will ensure success, such as a link to a key industry contact, or opportunity, this is where you should list it.

Strengths: -Understanding of the current music landscape via our current DJing bookings -Links to multiple artists with established fan bases -Advise and industry support via The Label Machine

Opportunities: -Access to industry database, press and music industry contacts -Access to other artists in local area

Core values:  What is important to you as a label? Are you going to be pushing underground music , or are you pushing experimental music? Is this to release your own album to support a tour, or are you interested in working with more mainstream music and artists?

-To build a brand that people can trust and turn to for good quality music -To have the confidence to push new music as opposed to just following recent trends -To build on personal relationships within the music industry in order to create a successful brand that people trust and want to be associated with

4. Business strategy

Outline your business strategy for the first five years. These are your tangible goals . How many releases do you aim to have? Do you want to sign new artists? When do you aim to break even on the revenue? 

As a bare minimum your goals should aim to release at least 3 singles or EP’s in your first year if you are a DJ or band, and 6-8 records of you aim to sign artists to your label. I would also aim to be breaking even from 12 months of your first release so the label is supporting itself financially .

The 3-5 year goals are what you will be doing should you achieve your first 1-2 years goals. These goals that are more flexible, and are likely to change but ensure you do write goals of where you intend to go.

1-2 Years -To have a steady flow of quality releases, building the labels reputation. -To have discovered and signed at least 2 exclusive acts to the label. -To have broken even on all costings

3-5 Years -To have a full roster of exclusive artists releasing under Zonderling Records. -To have had at least 3 overall Beatport number ones within their relative categories. -To be hosting smaller stages at festivals worldwide. -To have office space in either London, Bristol or LA with 3 or more staff members.

5. Distribution and Label Products

List your distributor and any other label products you aim to offer at the label such as merchandise or running events. 

Distribution channels:  Who will you distribute your music through?

Music distribution to all major stores of iTunes, Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon, and Google Play via the DistroKid distribution platform.

Events (optional) If you are doing events, who will run the events and how will they be promoted ?

Label events will be arranged with our contact ‘Zeal Promotions’ throughout North America, with our focus being on our home state Washington. Events will be promoted through local and national media coverage via ‘3rd Eye PR’

Merchandising (optional) If you are doing merchandising, who will be responsible? Where will you sell and manufacture your merchandise? What prices will you use?

Abbie Street will organise and implement the merchandise for the label. It will be hosted on Shopify website, and manufacturing will be carried out by a print-to-order manufacturer based in Seattle.

6. Label Management and Operations

This is where you list who will be managing the label and any other team members you will have. You can also list here any key partners you will use, such as The Label Machine, merchandise companies, or management companies.

Goals and objectives Describe your goals and objectives around the marketing; list the campaigns and plans that you have in place and your strategies for the future.

Target Market Here is where you can clearly define your target market . Important to put the genre of music you will be releasing, locations and age group as a minimum.

We aim to sell to all audiences, but with a more biased approach by making sure we appeal to the up and coming bass music markets such as the U.S.A. and a core demographic of end users between the age of 14 and 30

Advertising and promotion activities Describe what advertising platforms you will use to promote the label and the releases. You might want to list any  creative ideas to get the brand out there, any PR companies you might use for your first release, and which social media platforms you will promote on. -Using physical assets such as vinyl and cassette mixtapes we will create a rich online experience based on real life products, which we believe is missing from a lot of digital labels today. -We will use a DJ promotion service ‘The 6th Degree’ to garner maximum DJ support from the industry. -We will run Instagram promoted stories and sponsored Facebook posts to create awareness of new releases to fans of similar genres.

8. Financial budget and forecasts

This is the section where you can provide financial budget and forecasts, such as:

Developing a clear and focused labeling plan is an important component of a branding strategy because labels and packaging are usually the first things consumers notice. Small businesses and startups tend to have fewer resources at their disposal making it harder for their product to compete with better-known brands.

A well thought out label development plan can put a business’ limited resources to better use and help their label manufacturer have a deeper understanding of what is expected from them. Also, label development can lessen the chances of waste or error occurring during printing.

Your labeling plan is a small but critical part that should fit within the context of your branding strategy. We’ve come up with a list of the five best practices we’ve noted from our customers who have created and managed successful labeling strategies. To better ensure your labeling strategy is effective, you should follow these guidelines:

1. Fail to Plan, Plan to Fail

“What’s the message?” should be one of the first questions you ask yourself before you start getting quotes, and definitely before you place an order. Your labels aren’t on your product only to look good; they should also be communicating a predetermined message that you want the customer to receive.

After you’ve developed your message, next you should gather all the technical information that will be on the label. Most products are labeled with basic information such as product name, logo , ingredients, directions, net weight , barcode , website, customer service line and manufacturer/distributor information. Consider what your customers might like to know and research labeling trends in your industry to determine what technical information should be labeled.

2. Don’t Forget About the Container

A big part of your product’s presentation is the container. It’s hard to separate the container from the rest of your product’s design elements because it’s all supposed to complement one another. When looking at container options, you should examine and compare characteristics like the container’s shape, color, material, and cap – just to name a few. If the container fits your brand and product’s identity, then you can probably go ahead to the next stage of your labeling strategy.

3. Keep in Mind the Product’s Different Environments

Your labels should be designed so your product can look good in a multitude of places.  It’s important to take into account whether the design will work with the container in different settings as well as from a design and functional standpoint. Your materials and printing process are two other important factors that affect your label’s aesthetic and should be carefully considered.

4. Get Your Label Professionally Designed

A cost-effective way of designing a stellar label design is to hire a graphic designer (if you don’t already have one). You can probably find a multitude of local designers in your area that work out of home for a reasonable price. Operations Plan

This part of your record label business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your product/service to customers? For example, will you do it in person or over the phone only?
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully? How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

What makes it different, potentially profitable and more exciting than the other independent labels out there?

Strengths, weakness, opportunities, threats

Set out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – known as a SWOT analysis.

Your strengths could include the following and reputation of your artists or access to studios and influential contacts, while weaknesses could include a current lack of funding. Your opportunities could be any events or deals you’ve already secured, while threats could be strong competition from other labels, or a limited music scene in your local area. These are just some examples, so your SWOT analysis will depend entirely on your own situation

Your aims and how you’ll measure progress

What are the main aims of your record label? You’ll want to plan at least 1 to 3 years ahead, explaining your fundamental goals and how’ll you achieve them.

1. Write an executive summary

This section of your business plan should be 1–2 pages in length and enables potential financiers or partners to get an overview of what your business does and – most importantly — what the opportunity is for them. If they’re interested in the opportunity, they’ll conduct their own due diligence - and this will start with going through your business plan and financials.

It’s a good idea to write your executive summary last, when you’ve clarified your thinking around every section of the document. As an overview section, you don’t want to add any new content that isn’t in your business plan. Aim to keep this summary succinct and engaging by using simple, plain language, as this is much more persuasive than complicated or academic wording.

Use sub-headings and bullet points to help your most important information stand out, especially as busy executives may simply scan your executive summary and use this to decide whether they want to find out more.

2. Write your business overview

This section of your business plan needs to be more than just a list of what your business does. Its purpose is to excite those you’re hoping will work with you or help to fund your business.

Information to address includes:

What's the purpose of your business?

What problem does your business’ product or service solve?

What niche could it fill?

What’s different about your offering?

How are you better than anyone else at what you do?

Consider what your customer value proposition is by deciding what you want to achieve and what your number 1 benefit is for your customer.

3. Identify your USP

Think about what your unique selling points (USP) or differentiators are, and what proof-points you can provide to back them up.

For example, you can use terms like “market-leading” but if you don’t provide any evidence to back up your claims, your reader will take them with a big pinch of salt!

You should certainly reference any awards or endorsements that position you as the best person to provide your product or service, as well as any client testimonials. Make sure you include any education or experience that makes you an expert in your field as well.

4. Describe the market opportunity

Show you understand your industry, market and where you fit in it. While no-one can predict the future, offer up where you think the opportunity is for your business and make sales projections based on that. 

For example, imagine your business is selling personalised cookies - there's little competition in your area and you see your market opportunity to create designs for all calendar and holiday events. You expect to increase sales by 30% in one year and 50% in three years, driven primarily by word-of-mouth referrals.

Make sure you also consider macro trends that may create opportunities for you, such as social, environmental, or technological changes that may affect buying behaviour.

5. Include a SWOT analysis

Whatever your business strengths or opportunities, they’ll always be known and unknown weaknesses and threats; there’s no such thing as certainty in business or in life!

However, you can demonstrate that you’ve examined your business through different lenses and have a thorough understanding of it by doing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis.

Don’t worry about drawing attention to your business’ shortcomings - every opportunity has them and it’ll give investors and partners confidence in you that you won't bury your head in the sand. Naturally, it's important that you specify what you’re going to do to address these weaknesses and counter these threats.

6. Present a competitor analysis

Let’s face it, no matter what industry you’re in, or what you’re selling, there’s going to be other businesses offering the same thing. But instead of worrying about the competition, use this as a positive opportunity to up your game and work out the unique advantages you have that will keep you competitive.

Identify your top 3 competitors and analyse what they're doing well and where they’re coming up short. Try to be as objective as possible and identify how to differentiate yourself from them.

You should also look into who the industry leaders are and what the benchmarks are for your industry so that you can set yourself targets for continuous improvement.

7. Create a customer persona

A customer persona is a fictional person who represents your company's ideal customer. Naturally, the persona can be based on a real person - the more you get to know your ideal customer, the more targeted and successful your marketing efforts will be.

To create a customer persona, you need to conduct research into your ideal customer’s age, sex, income, employment, daily activities, interests and hobbies. 8. Write your marketing strategy

Once you’ve figured where your audience is likely to hang out, you can outline your strategies for promoting and advertising your products or services in the next 12 months.

What can your business do to increase the number of repeat customers? 

Does your business have a referral or loyalty program? 

Do you have a post-purchase follow up in place?

Will you use surveys to track customer satisfaction?

What ways can you continue delivering outstanding service?

Is there a way to continue educating and adding value to your customers?

10. Present your financials

Most people who are looking at investing their time and/or money in your business will want to see your financial statements - your performance to date and your projections over the short and medium term. They'll also want to know how much you’ve received in funding to date and what these other sources of funding are - including your own investment.

Current finances

You need to show how your business has performed financially over the last year, highlighting metrics such as positive cashflow , net profit and assets.

Financial forecasts

You should also provide a balance forecast projecting total assets, total liabilities and net assets over 1, 2 and 3 years, and a profit and loss forecast for the same periods detailing gross profit /net sales, total expenses and net profit/loss. Finally, you should also provide a cash flow forecast month by month over the next year.

11. Detail how much funding is needed

Naturally, you also need to be very clear about how much money you’re looking for and what you plan to do with it. If you’re looking for a loan , you need to detail what it’s for, over what period it’ll be repaid, and what collateral you have to secure it.

12. Propose an exit strategy

Any financial stakeholder in your business will want a return on investment. If you’re pursuing this type of funding, you should include some detail on your proposed exit strategy . For example, do you want to sell the company at some point or go public?

Similarly, you should outline your succession plan so the business can continue to operate if you decide to step away from it. Eli Lilly beefs up plan to expand manufacturing for popular drugs Zepbound, Mounjaro

Eli Lilly will spend more than $5 billion to expand an Indiana manufacturing site and eventually make more doses of its popular weight-loss and diabetes treatments, Zepbound and Mounjaro.

The drugmaker said Friday that it was more than doubling its investment in a site near its Indianapolis headquarters. But it will take time for the location to start producing.

The company broke ground for its Lebanon, Indiana, manufacturing plant last year and expects to start making products there near the end of 2026. Production will then increase through 2028.

Lilly said it would add $5.3 billion to the $3.7 billion it had already slated for the site. Company officials said in a statement that this amounts to the largest manufacturing investment in the company’s history, which dates back to the 19th century.

The site will make tirzepatide, the main ingredient behind both Mounjaro and Zepbound.

Zepbound, the weight-loss treatment, received U.S. regulatory approval last fall. The two drugs combined to generate more than $2 billion sales in this year’s first quarter.

But Lilly has struggled to make enough supply to keep up with the growing demand, as has its rival, the Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk, which makes the popular weight-loss drug Wegovy.

Company officials have said they expected some manufacturing increases to occur starting in the back half of this year.

Analysts expect Zepbound and Mounjaro to eventually generate well over $30 billion in combined annual sales for Lilly, according to the data firm FactSet.

Shares of Eli Lilly and Co. rose slightly to $809.70 Friday morning, in line with the S&P 500 index.

Labour's shadow education secretary has been criticised for refusing to rule out an increase in university tuition fees if the party wins the general election.

The National Union of Students (NUS), which represents university and college students across the UK, said a potential rise in tuition fees would "hamper their future" and that loan debt was already "unsustainable".

Bridget Phillipson said during a BBC Question Time debate on Thursday evening that UK universities were facing "enormous challenges" and the question of how they would be funded did not have any "straightforward" answers.

She said the decade-long freeze on tuition fees, which has set them at about £9,000 per year, meant universities across the country were "increasingly struggling to cover the cost of tuition".

But pressed by fellow panellists whether she would rule it out, the shadow education secretary did not answer.

The electoral geography of the UK is changing.

Following the recommendations of independent Boundary Commissions for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the next UK general election - which Sky News understands will be on 4 July - will be fought on new constituency boundaries, replacing those in operation since 2010.

This is the sixth periodic review to be implemented since the war. The next review is not scheduled until October 2031.

Exploring how this movement of voters affects the political makeup of the House of Commons is a task that Colin Rallings and myself have been doing over the past thirty years following previous boundary adjustments.

18 June: This is the deadline to register, which you can do online at gov.uk/register-to-vote .

19 June: This is the deadline to apply for a postal vote, should you not be around when polling stations open on 4 July.

26 June: This is the deadline to apply for a proxy vote, which allows someone to vote on your behalf, and also to apply for a Voter ID certificate should you not have another valid form of identification.

The latest edition of Electoral Dysfunction  is in your podcast feeds now, and one of the main topics was the optics of Rishi Sunak's announcement of the general election date.

In case you missed it, he went out on to Downing Street in the pouring rain, and throughout his speech, the song Things Can Only Get Better by D:Ream was blaring out - which was the official anthem of Sir Tony Blair's landslide victory for Labour in 1997 ( more here ).

Our political editor Beth Rigby  explained that Mr Sunak did the announcement on the street because he "wanted to be traditional".

But former Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson  branded the launch "disastrous", saying: "The idea of tradition and all the rest of it, well, that's great and all.

"But you're the prime minister - you make the traditions here.

"How f****** incompetent do you have to be to launch a campaign that badly?

"And how much do you not protect your boss by allowing him to do it or encouraging him to do it?"

She added: "Wait for a break in the clouds, okay? Look, how hard is that?"

Jess Phillips , Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley said he wanted to avoid advertising that he is a centi-millionaire by having "a lackey holding an umbrella".

She added that he "wouldn't have lost a single vote" if someone had been holding an umbrella, or he'd delivered the speech inside.

"He will lose votes because of the way he launched it," she said.

Sir Keir Starmer's tour of key battlegrounds kicked off in Scotland on Friday. His message was singular: change. And his target was singular, too: take out the SNP.

In four elections on the bounce, Labour has been nearly wiped out in Scotland by the SNP. In 2019, the party returned one MP to Westminster from Scotland. It now has two. The task in this election campaign is to turn that into dozens.

"This is an election about change, and Scotland's voice is vital. It needs to be a leading voice," he said in a slick campaign event with hundreds of people holding up "change" placards and cheering Sir Keir and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar on.

"Send a message, send a message: that is the height of the SNP's ambition, to send a message of protest to Westminster. I don't want Scotland to send a message. I want Scotland to send a government. A Labour government."

Ask Labour strategists, and they say Scotland is vital to get Labour over the line to a majority because of how far behind Labour were in England back in 2019. They are operating a twin attack on two failing governments - the SNP one in Holyrood and the Conservative government in Westminster - to implore voters to switch back from the SNP to kick the Tories out.

Starmer told me in Glasgow that winning in Scotland was important numerically but also to him personally, because he wants to be a prime minister, should Labour win, that governs for the whole of the UK.

Rishi Sunak has admitted having "difficult days" as he claims he's pumped for the campaign and is going to win.

Speaking to travelling reporters on the flight from Belfast to Birmingham, the prime minister insisted he was "up for the fight" in this campaign and is "absolutely" enjoying it.

Asked if he was going to win, he said: "Damn right."

The prime minister stunned the nation and his party after his decision to call an election on Wednesday, and immediately embarked on an opening campaign tour of all four nations of the United Kingdom.

However, he gave a glimpse about the challenges he has felt while speaking to broadcasters on the flight.

Conservative MP Caroline Nokes "jokingly" confronted Labour's Wes Streeting over allegations he is behind rumours she has considered defecting to Sir Keir Starmer's party.

A friend of Ms Nokes, who has been the Tory MP for Romsey and Southampton North since 2010, said she "took him to task" over the claims that have recently appeared in the media.

The source told Sky News: "Caroline took him to task for spreading these rumours.

"Caroline has only ever been in one party and is Tory to her core," they said.

Referring to Mr Streeting's past role as the president of the National Union of Students before he entered Westminster, the source added: "Wes needs to realise he's not running the student union anymore!"

After avoiding public scrutiny for nearly a decade, Paula Vennells, the former Post Office boss, finally faced questions about her role in the most widespread miscarriage of justice that Britain has ever seen.

She has been giving evidence at the Post Office Horizon Inquiry for the last three days – and today she was accused by lawyers of talking "rubbish" and being in "la la land".

Jeremy Hunt has given his first interview since the election was called - and taxes are a key focus.

The chancellor hit out at the inheritance tax - long-hated by Conservatives and rumoured to be on the PM's list of things to scrap - but would not say if it was a priority.

"I hope it's something that over time a Conservative government would be able to look at," he told The Telegraph .

"I think it is profoundly anti-Conservative because it stops and disincentivises people from saving for their future," he said.

But his "first priority" will be reducing the taxes that "have the biggest impact on growth".

He promised that he would continue with his tax cutting if re-elected to government, saying: "We made a start, and we will go further."

He signalled that the Tories would want to end the effective 60% rate that applies on incomes between £100,000 and £125,140 because of a tapering of the tax-free personal allowance.

He told the paper: "Our priority will be taxes that boost growth. So that can be business taxes that boost investment.

"But it's also taxes on work, which is why our National Insurance cuts will fill about one in five vacancies across the economy.

"And it's [addressing] taxes that disincentivise saving, because if we want to have more investment in the economy, we need to be saving more."

He claimed that Labour "don't understand that the marginal rate of tax that you pay stops people working and so we've got lots of distortions in the tax system".

He also vowed not to introduce a wealth tax, saying the party does not "believe" in them.
