The rise of sports betting.

Six years ago, sports betting was illegal under federal law. Today, it is everywhere.

By German Lopez

In the coming days, the country’s best men’s and women’s college basketball teams will clash in the N.C.A.A. tournament finals. For fans, these are some of the biggest events of the year — a chance to see the best young athletes in the highest-stakes games. They are also some of the most lucrative events for sports betting apps. Americans will legally wager nearly $3 billion this year during March Madness, the American Gaming Association estimates.

Six years ago, sports betting was illegal under federal law. Today, it is everywhere. N.B.A. and N.H.L. viewers are exposed to three gambling ads a minute, a recent study found . Commercial sports betting revenue has increased 12-fold since 2019, as this chart by my colleague Ashley Wu shows:

What happened? In 2018, the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban, concluding that it violated states’ rights. Thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia now allow gambling on games.

The old laws were strange in many ways. Other countries had allowed betting. The U.S. allowed it for some competitions, like horse racing. And millions of Americans were already betting on sports, regardless of its legality.

But the Supreme Court did not just let Americans place legal wagers. It also empowered a big industry to market sports betting apps and convince more people to gamble, through another set of rulings.

Enabling big business

Americans typically learn about free speech in the context of social and political issues. But starting in the 1970s, the Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment to protect advertisements. Now, if something is legal, it can be advertised, and governments can’t stop companies from marketing it. (There are some limits: Ads can’t be deceptive or misleading, for instance.)

Supporters of this legal paradigm say that advertising lets consumers make informed decisions. “The court has taken the view that the freedom of speech, generally speaking, should let individuals decide for themselves what to believe without the government trying to say that these are bad messages,” Eugene Volokh, a legal scholar at U.C.L.A., told me. In other words: If people want to spend their savings on legal sports wagers, they should be able to find out how to do so.

What about tobacco? It’s true that cigarette companies are not allowed to advertise, even though their products are legal. But this is a special situation. Executives agreed not to market cigarettes as part of an unusual legal settlement with states in 1998. Otherwise, the Supreme Court has upheld tobacco companies’ right to advertise on First Amendment grounds.

The rulings mean that the only reliable way to prevent the mass marketing of a product is to ban it. For lawmakers, “there is this strange incentive to try to get around the First Amendment by not legalizing things or by banning products,” Jennifer Pomeranz, a public health lawyer at New York University, said. She pointed to the federal government’s prohibition of marijuana, even as many states have legalized the drug.

The consequences

The American Gaming Association says that sports betting ads guide people from illegal to legal markets, which raises tax revenue for governments and helps consumers avoid fraud.

But advertising also convinces more people to gamble. Recovering addicts complain that the deluge of ads presents a constant temptation when all they want to do is watch a game. Calls to gambling helplines have increased in states that legalized sports betting.

Legal gambling has also affected the sports themselves. Consider prop betting, in which people try to predict how an athlete will perform in a given game. Fans have threatened players who don’t meet their predictions. And athletes can bet on themselves, then adjust their play in an effort to cash out, as N.B.A. player Jontay Porter has been accused of doing . Such self-dealing could damage the integrity of a competition. For these reasons, Louisiana this week passed a ban on prop betting for college athletes.

Gambling can also bring other kinds of headaches for athletes. Baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani is currently mired in a scandal after his former interpreter allegedly stole millions to pay for bets. (That misconduct involves illegal betting markets. The Athletic explained how they work .)

These issues will become more common as sports betting grows. But the gambling industry has a vested interest in getting as many people to participate as possible, regardless of the consequences. And as a result of Supreme Court rulings, lawmakers are limited in what they can do.

For more: Ohtani is performing, despite the gambling scandal. He hit his first home run as a Dodger with a 430-foot shot. See fun images of his fans .

The story behind the sports betting boom

Opinion AI will transform sports betting. It will also increase the risks.

Artificial intelligence is set to revolutionize wagering. Problem gambling will rise, too.

informative speech on sports betting

Advanced artificial intelligence is already changing the face of professional sports. AI-generated analytics and algorithms can more precisely track such metrics as a running back’s speed on the gridiron or the velocity of an infielder’s throws across the diamond. Athletes use AI to enhance their training regimens. Coaches use it in recruitment and game-day strategizing.

Just as AI is affecting sports, it is, perhaps inevitably, going to transform the business of betting on them. We’ve noted previously that the explosion of legal sports betting and the proliferation of sports betting apps has fueled gambling addiction, bankruptcies and job losses. The rapid advance of AI into the gambling sphere could exacerbate all of that. It’s urgent to mitigate the risks through new regulatory safeguards, industry guidelines and ethical standards.

The legal gambling industry has already figured out how to track bettors’ data, know whether they are on a winning or a losing streak, offer various odds, and supply predictions or probabilities of certain outcomes. Advanced AI systems will help sportsbooks do all of that much faster, using bigger data sets, thus creating an individually tailored gambling experience. AI will know your favorite team and players, how much you typically bet, at what times of day and night — and target you with specific betting recommendations.

AI-powered algorithms and machine learning can instantly analyze huge amounts of historical data and statistics in real time. How has a certain baseball player fared batting against left-handed pitchers on overcast days in a specific stadium on Wednesdays? The technology can give bettors predictive modeling instantaneously. That, in turn, might prompt online gamblers to make what they think are surefire bets.

informative speech on sports betting

Existing AI tools can now predict certain events with 80 to 90 percent accuracy, according to the tech site TMCnet. “A 90% accuracy means guaranteed profits,” TMCnet said. No more gut instinct bets, just AI-driven statistical probabilities. Those tools are not yet widely available, but they are coming.

Proponents of online sports betting see this as leveling the betting field, giving anyone seated on a couch access to the analytics once available only to professional gamblers. But for those grappling with a gambling problem — estimated by the National Council on Problem Gambling as up to 9 million Americans — it could reinforce the addiction, as bettors wager increasing amounts because they think they have a better chance to beat the house.

In theory, as the gambling industry points out, AI could help combat gambling addictions. It could help identify and track problematic gambling behavior as well as individual at-risk users. Gambling researchers have identified specific “markers of harm ,” including changes in the frequency of betting or in amounts wagered, whether a bettor is using multiple credit cards, how often they make deposits into online accounts, and whether any deposits have failed for insufficient funds. Another marker is bettors opening and closing sportsbook accounts, which might indicate they are trying to deal with a gambling problem. AI could work better than current problem gambling initiatives and helplines, which rely on self-reporting.

Gambling proponents say AI can help detect fraud and money laundering by identifying irregular patterns and movements of money. Some also say AI can increase fairness in sports by finding anomalies — “red flags” that might indicate match fixing, or abnormal behavior by a player that could suggest doping or illegal betting.

But the potential benefits of AI depend on the gambling industry policing itself, adopting internal guidelines and AI ethics, and giving more than lip service to the idea of “responsible gambling.” The United States should look to the European Union Parliament, which recently introduced the AI Act to hold companies using AI responsible for any resulting harm. The E.U. plans to set up a new European AI office in charge of regulations and enforcement, which can levy fines against a company’s global earnings. Citizens will also be allowed to file complaints.

In the United States, 38 states and D.C. allow sports betting — and carry primary responsibility to regulate it. This creates a patchwork of law and regulation instead of what’s needed: congressional action at the national level. Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), who earlier introduced legislation to limit sportsbook advertising, has drafted a companion bill called the Safe Bet Act. Among other things, it would forbid operators from using AI to track individual gambling habits, provide targeted promotions and generate new products such as micro-bets. The AI revolution in sports gambling is coming fast. Government needs to keep up.

Sports betting culture negatively impacts mental health; NCAA works to support student-athletes

Imagine playing a sport you love, giving it your all in every game. In addition, you're balancing your academic studies as you pressure yourself to succeed in the classroom and on the field. If that weren't enough pressure, you also have strangers harassing you via social media, spouting abusive threats because they've lost money based on your performance or that of your team.

It's a mental health nightmare.

Harassment related to sports betting can cause serious harm to student-athlete mental health and well-being. The NCAA is doing more than ever to address the rise of sports betting — including monitoring and flagging abusive social media content, providing e-learning content, educating on campuses and even lobbying states to change sports betting laws. The NCAA believes bets placed on individual college athletes' performances, known as prop bets, should be eliminated. These types of bets target the individual for harassment and are more easily manipulated, threatening competition integrity. That's why the NCAA is  advocating  for elimination of player-specific prop bets in collegiate competitions. The NCAA's efforts are paying off.

For example, in  Ohio , student-athletes, campus leaders, athletics administrators and the national office collaborated with gaming regulators to remove prop bets from their books across the state. Since Ohio's action, Vermont, Maryland, Louisiana and others have moved to prohibit prop bets. The NCAA is also urging states to implement antiharassment measures, including implementation of a reporting system to allow states to place certain bettors who harass student-athletes on a list that excludes them from being able to place bets.  West Virginia  has taken action in this space, creating a framework that other states are interested in modeling. Student-athletes are speaking out about this issue and working to create awareness about the detrimental impacts of harassment. Their voices are critical to this effort.

Just 12 days after North Carolina legalized sports betting, including player prop bets on college competitions, North Carolina men's basketball student-athlete Armando Bacot publicly reported receiving betting-related abuse via private social media direct messages after his performance.

"It's terrible. Even at the last game, I guess I didn't get enough rebounds or something. I thought I played pretty good last game, but I looked at my DMs, and I got like over 100 messages from people telling me I sucked and stuff like that because I didn't get enough rebounds," Bacot said.

Since these remarks and NCAA outreach, North Carolina lawmakers have  filed bills  to ban college player prop bets. State legislators in New Jersey have also filed a  bill , which has bipartisan support, that would ban college prop bets.

Earlier this year, Cody Shimp and Morgan Wynne, chair and vice chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, joined NCAA President Charlie Baker in writing a memo to college athletics leaders about the severity of online harassment. They urged campus stakeholders to use their voice to effect change and increase safeguards to protect student-athletes from abuse.

"The sports betting landscape in America is rapidly evolving and requires careful consideration of all involved stakeholders," Shimp, Wynne and Baker said in the memo. "The NCAA will continue to do its part to lead in this space to identify practical solutions to guard against the dangers of sports betting, such as harassment. Your role is critical in driving change locally. Together, we can help our student-athletes compete in a safer college sports atmosphere."

The NCAA has launched several initiatives to address harassment, including engaging  Signify Group . Its Threat Matrix artificial intelligence service supports the Association in studying and responding to online abuse and threats directed at NCAA championship participants, including student-athletes, coaches, officials and committee members for the 2023-24 championship season. This unique initiative is intended to further promote the mental health and well-being of the college sports community through data collection and analytics.

While the championship season is still underway, some trends the data already shows include:

  • One in 3 high-profile athletes receive abusive messages from someone with a betting interest.
  • Higher-profile events with sports betting markets attract increased volumes of abuse or threats.
  • Ninety percent of harassment is generated online or through social media.
  • In sports with high volumes of betting, 15%-25% of all abuse surrounding that competition is betting related.
  • During March Madness, Signify covered nearly 1,000 Division I men's and women's basketball student-athletes, 64 teams, over 280 coaches and 120 NCAA match officials.
  • Across the Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, over 54,000 posts/comments were flagged by Signify's AI for potential abuse or threats and reviewed by human in-house analysts.
  • Of those 54,000, 4,000 were confirmed as abusive or threatening and reported to the relevant social media platforms, with some elevated to law enforcement.
  • More than 540 abusive betting-related messages were directed at men's and women's basketball student-athletes, including death threats.
  • Women's basketball student-athletes received approximately three times more threats than men's basketball student-athletes.
  • Student-athletes are not the only group experiencing these threats and abuse. Game officials, administrators and other athletics employees have been harassed related to their respective involvement in competitions.

Insights from the initial set of championships covered by the service will be released later and will be used as a benchmark for monitoring efforts at future NCAA championships. Furthermore, Signify's unique DM risk management service will also be offered to student-athletes and officials to protect them from the type of abuse experienced by Bacot.

Additionally, the NCAA has expanded programming through  e-learning content  and with EPIC Global Solutions to educate student-athletes not only about how to handle abusive threats, but more broadly on the risks of sports betting and problem gambling. The program won  Player Protection Initiative of the Year  at the 2024 SBC Summit, a conference and trade show focused on the online betting and gambling industry.

To date, more than 55,000 student-athletes have been educated through EPIC Global Solutions lived-experience sessions, leaving a lasting impact:

"This seminar really changed my perspective on gambling and the severity of it. … It was very educational and informative on the risks, factors and harm betting can do," said one student-athlete in an anonymous survey following an EPIC session. "Really caught my attention on how this can really be a problem. I've seen people with betting addiction but just never knew how to help."

Increasing education and growing awareness of the complexities of sports betting fueled the NCAA's  Draw the Line  campaign, launched at the start of March Madness.

The campaign prioritizes student-athlete education on the effects of sports betting while also addressing responsible gambling for all who consume and participate in college sports.

While the campaign is focused on social media promotion to reach student-athletes where they are, it also includes a  membership toolkit  for member schools and conferences to access resources that extend the campaign for on-campus education.

All these initiatives have been developed and implemented to help protect student-athlete well-being and mental health to safeguard the overall student-athlete experience in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Sports betting was the talk of the Global Gaming Expo. Here’s what we learned from four days in Vegas.

LAS VEGAS — Sports betting represents just 10 percent of the total dollars spent in the United States on legal gambling, alongside traditional casino offerings such as slots, blackjack, and roulette, according to the American Gaming Association.

You wouldn’t know that from the four-day Global Gaming Expo that wrapped up last Thursday.

A mere tyke at four-plus years old, sports betting dominated the speeches and panels held in windowless, ultra-air-conditioned conference rooms and ballrooms outside the gargantuan Venetian Expo space, where the latest high-tech versions of old-school gambling were on full display.

A few sights, sounds, and takeaways from the conference:

▪ Breaking the predominant sports betting demographic of young white “frat boys” and bringing in more diverse bettors — particularly women — got a lot of attention.

“We’ve been an under-serviced segment,” said Meghan Chayka, co-founder of the ice hockey analytics firm Stathletes. “It’s been, ‘Let’s just put pink on a jersey and women will just show up’ or ‘Let’s just have a woman’s night where we serve champagne.’

“Now, this is an emerging market where we’re having companies make gear for us, companies looking at the demographics and creating content, having analysts that speak to these smart, savvy, educated woman fans.

“We’re seeing this demographic now being taken seriously, as I think it should be.”

Siska Concannon, co-founder of Affiliated Sports Fans, a marketing firm, said operators need to do a better job understanding their untapped customer base.

“We know that women represent 50 percent of the fan base, and we know that sports fans translate to sports bettors,” she said, “so we know all those things, then how are we going to reduce the, I guess, ‘intimidation’ of sports betting?”

Old-school bookies and sportsbooks present a barrier of sorts for women not confident in the intricacies of betting, said Concannon, but there’s an option.

“What online [betting] has done is created a space where people can take their time, they can Google if they don’t understand what the certain terminology is, and that’s just kind of part of the puzzle,” she said. “We need to make it less intimidating, through education, without being patronizing.

“As an industry, we need to start not necessarily moving away from the frat-boy culture, but certainly adding a little bit to it. I mean, it’s getting boring, right? Like, all these influencers do the same damn thing, make the same jokes, the same kind of frat boys. We need more diversity, we need more change.”

▪ Squashing the illegal market — those off-shore operations that consistently pop up with the most basic Google search of “sports betting” — is a high priority of the AGA. The national trade group estimates $300 billion is bet annually on unregulated machines, which translates into gaming revenue losses of $15 billion and tax losses of $4 billion a year.

“We’re standing up and calling out illegal operators by name,” said AGA president Bill Miller in his keynote. “They’ve responded by harassing and attempting to intimidate us. Our answer? Bring it on! They can’t stand up to scrutiny in the court of public opinion, and they won’t stand up to scrutiny in a court of law.”

Miller asked for help from law enforcement, for retailers across the country to remove unregulated machines, for tech and media companies to cut ties to the illegal sites and policymakers to enact tougher laws.

▪ Mind-blown moment: Learning about the “courtesy slice.”

That’s the slice made in a lime or lemon wedge that allows it to sit atop the rim of a glass, and the SupraCut 800 is, according to SupraCut, the only automatic citrus wedger (eight wedges at a time) on the market with that courtesy slice option. Factor in the slice, and the machine can spit out 64 wedges in 60 seconds. Without the slice, it’s almost twice as fast: 120 wedges in a minute.

▪ Right off the top of one panel, moderator Contessa Brewer of CNBC asked Boston-based DraftKings CEO Jason Robins, “Did you do a deal?,” referring to reports that DraftKings and ESPN are on the verge of a major partnership.

Robins was not caught by surprise.

“We have our existing partnership [with ESPN] already and there’s nothing else to really talk about at this point,” he said.

As for other plans, Robins mentioned DraftKings does not have plans to brand itself on brick-and-mortar casinos and that the company is more focused on domestic issues than increasing its international footprint.

Robins and FanDuel CEO Amy Howe expressed expansive mutual admiration for the way they run their businesses.

▪ Derek Stevens, owner and CEO of Circa Resort & Casino, on Las Vegas getting an NBA expansion franchise: “It’s not an ‘if’ question, it’s a “when.’ ”

Should the NBA expand by two teams at some point in the next couple of years, Fenway Sports Group —with LeBron James as a partner — is considered by many to be a leading contender for ownership.

▪ “RG” (far easier to say than “responsible gaming”) was a catch-word that the AGA and all the operators are paying increasing attention to as they use lessons learned the hard way in mature markets in Europe, which have tried to retrofit RG policies surrounding issues such as oversaturated advertising.

“If we don’t self-regulate as an industry, then you’re going to get regulated in ways that you’re probably not real excited about,” said Jay Snowden, CEO and president of Penn Entertainment, who said operators need to be compliant with the varying state regulations.

When asked by Brewer if casinos were giving “lip service” to RG, Snowden pushed back.

“We don’t want irresponsible gamblers in our ecosystem,” said Snowden. “It doesn’t move the needle from a cash-flow perspective, so we’re constantly trying to seek out those who may have gambling problems, which is a very, very small percentage of those who engage with our products or come visit our casinos.

“And that will never change. This isn’t lip service because online sports betting is new.”

▪ Aristocrat is a gaming developer that inked a licensing deal with the NFL allowing the league’s and team’s logos to be placed on slot machines. The Patriots and Raiders are the only two teams to sign their own deals.

Under and behind a massive walk-through helmet, some expo visitors were granted a peek at the machines. Despite considerable curiosity, the company did not allow media to go inside, never mind snap a picture, of the NFL machines’ exterior, citing unfinished design status.

It’s an unusual strategy to gain publicity, but in a backward way, it certainly worked.

▪ Massachusetts’s sports betting bill prohibits wagers on in-state colleges, unless they’re playing in an NCAA tournament. AGA senior vice president Casey Clark believes the prohibition will not work as intended.

“When you have a carve-out, that suggests you can’t bet on college sports,” said Clark. “It’s only perpetuating the illegal market. I don’t know that that solves for what we’re trying to solve for.

“On its face, it sounds like it’s a good idea. I just think if people want to bet on Boston College, they’re going to bet on Boston College. They’re just not going to have the opportunity to do it in the app infrastructure that they’re going to bet on the Patriots.”

▪ Who needs dealers?

A trend from the last few years has continued, with computerized, nearly all-video-screened craps tables, roulette wheels, and blackjack and poker tables, where the dealer is replaced by a computer.

Part of the thinking from the casinos’ standpoint is new bettors don’t have to sit near and perhaps get intimidated by more experienced players. Oh, and besides the technology allowing for hands to be played faster, the casino eliminates the pesky matter of paying a wage with benefits to a human employee.

Much of the floor space was taken up by companies showing off their latest massively sized video slot machines with high-def, eye-catching animated video, plus assorted “ka-ching” noisemaking options. A rock-paper-scissors machine stood out as something not seen before.

Some of the smaller exhibitors filled niches such as casino seating, biometrically verifying ID systems, digital wallets, and holographic gaming — bet on a restaurant table!

Sports Betting Is Ruining More Than Your Bank Account

The betting apps now legal in much of the country are about to sap the Super Bowl of the very thing that makes it so special.

An image of a slot machine with a three footballs

Everyone likes to think that they are immune to marketing. Deep down you know that investing in crypto won’t make you as brave as one of the Wright brothers, even if Matt Damon says so . But then one January day, you find yourself sitting in your Allbirds , snacking on a bag of socially progressive M&M s , and, with some resignation, you realize the truth: You’re a gullible, fallible, easily manipulated idiot after all.

This is exactly how I found myself betting on NFL playoff games this winter. In early January, online sports betting became legal in New York, where I live, joining a host of states that have legalized it since 2018, when the Supreme Court rescinded a federal ban on sports wagering. As the sports-betting veil lifted, it was accompanied by a deluge of ads for wagering apps and a shock-and-awe bombardment of promotions that seemed to make no financial sense. No consumer or medium was spared. The sheer ferocity of the campaign became a meme : “STOP SHOWING ME SPORTS BETTING ADS I AM GAY” went one tweet shared hundreds of times.

Not surprisingly, the marketing blitz worked. In just three weeks, Empire State gamblers had placed a record-breaking $1.6 billion in online bets —and yeah, I got suckered into it too. One month later, with the Super Bowl finally here, I’ve been drawn deep into the sports-betting vortex. The apps, while occasionally fun and nerve-racking, are even more confusing and addictive than I could have ever imagined.

Will Leitch: Sports gambling is a disaster waiting to happen

The first sportsbook app that got me was Caesars, whose ads have featured the comedian J. B. Smoove, Halle Berry, and virtually every member of the Manning football clan (not just the famous ones ). Ahead of the first round of the NFL playoffs, the Caesars app promised a $300 free bet for new users, a pretty typical promo. But in an eye-popping flourish, Caesars also matched up to $3,000 that a new user deposited in the app. Although plenty of seasoned bettors reportedly jumped on this wild offer, this type of whole-hog commitment frightened me, so instead, I threw in the minimum $20 to qualify and immediately put the $300 on the Kansas City Chiefs to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers by at least 13 points.

Even though I thought I knew enough about sports to bet on them occasionally, Caesars’ promotional free bet was a bit more complicated than I had expected. When the Chiefs beat the Steelers by 21 points, my winning bet didn’t become actual money I could withdraw from Caesars and spend in the real world. It instead became $573 in “bonus money” that would disappear forever unless I wagered a certain amount of it within seven days. When I plunked down a much more modest bet on the Los Angeles Rams–Arizona Cardinals game that weekend (and lost), my slightly smaller pile of bonus money didn’t become real either. I tried to engage with the app’s support-chat feature to find out why, but no one ever responded.

A day later, still irritated that my bonus bounty remained in bettors’ purgatory, I flung $20 at an NBA game I was already watching. As soon as I did, I reached the magic threshold in the fine print that made all of my theoretical bonus money real. Suddenly, I was a gambler. A shark. A killer. And I quickly did what any other high roller would do: I withdrew all but $50 from the app. Naturally, it didn’t transfer immediately. For the next three days, the winnings sat as a pending transaction before they were sent along to my bank. And up until the hour that the money came through, I could have canceled the withdrawal and kept playing.

Even if you have a semi-firm grasp of gambling terminology—parlays, point spreads, overs, unders, money lines—betting apps introduce a whole new slew of beguiling wordplay. The following weekend, I was lured into trying the BetMGM app for the second round of the NFL playoffs by its hyping of so-called risk-free bets, which means that if you lose, you’ll receive the same amount lost in free bets. (So really it’s more “risk-free” than risk-free.) Then, there are “parlay boost tokens,” which increase the potential payout from a complicated bet that involves multiple outcomes.

Read: America’s gambling addiction is metastasizing

Like real sportsbooks, the apps also promote prepackaged bets that are enticing on the surface, but either face long odds in reality or don’t make a ton of sense in general. Ahead of an NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets and Washington Wizards, I took a BetMGM wager that offered a higher payout if three of the teams’ stars scored at least 20 points. While Kyrie Irving had 30 and Bradley Beal had 23, I paced in agony as James Harden ended up with just 18, missing two layups and having two more blocked in the fourth quarter alone. Worst of all, the game itself was a nail-biter—the Nets won 119–118—but I struggled to enjoy it.

Although these promotions are meant to generate excitement as more states legalize sports betting, the nature of sports-betting apps also seems geared to get users into the regular habit of placing bets from their couches, their beds, their cars, and the games themselves. Over the course of the month—out of boredom, isolation, or habit—I’m averaging a little more than one bet a day.

Obviously, people will continue to enjoy betting on sports, but I worry that my specific tale of digital woe is only going to become more familiar. According to The Information , sports-betting companies spent $1.2 billion on advertising in 2021. That amount is projected to nearly double in 2022, especially as more states legalize betting and it further integrates with live broadcasts and leagues themselves. Although the NFL has limited the number of sports-betting ads to six per game, with the Super Bowl coming up, we’re quickly approaching the inflection point of sports betting in the U.S., if we haven’t hit it already.

Like the Dallas Cowboys and playoff disappointment, football and sports betting go hand in hand. Even before the rise of sports-betting apps, Super Bowl Sunday was the biggest wagering day of the year. But the relationship is getting pretty intense these days. Last spring, the NFL upped the ante by announcing multiyear partnerships with Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel that will further entrench sports betting in the NFL experience. This year, more than 31 million Americans are expected to bet $7.6 billion on this year’s game, a 78 percent jump from 2021. That includes me. Still a mark for a good promotion, I registered for the FanDuel app, which is pitching totally unreasonable $280 returns on $5 Super Bowl bets, along with “risk-free” parlays and oddball prop wagers—like which team will win the opening coin toss or what color Gatorade the winning coach will be doused in.

Read: Slime and Spongebob can’t fix the NFL’s image problem

Unfortunately, as I’ve already learned, keeping track of these potential outcomes removes you from the game. The Super Bowl’s rare power is its monocultural character—even for nonfans who are tuning in for the ads or the halftime show, it’s hard to opt out of what is by far the most-watched event in the country. That is, unless you opt out by going too deep into the mess of it. Super Bowl parties are an American tradition, one that so many of us skipped last year, and yet these apps may narrow the experience of how millions of people watch and enjoy the game.

Though online sports betting will no doubt boost the investment (and the risks) of some viewers, it will also take one of the few communal spectacles we have left and turn it into something more individualistic. Yet again, an act of leisure is getting robbed of its idleness and innocence. At least for now, I’ve come out slightly ahead in my sports-betting endeavors, but I’m already worried I’ve left something behind.

The NBA’s Eastern and Western Conference finals could soon be over.

Going into Monday, the Boston Celtics lead the Indiana Pacers 3-0 in the East while the Dallas Mavericks are up 3-0 over the Minnesota Timberwolves in the West.

The games have been relatively close. Two of Boston’s three wins have come by five points or fewer, and two of Dallas’ three wins have come by three points or fewer.

Luka Doncic has led the Mavericks, scoring at least 32 points in each game, while Jayson Tatum has paced the Celtics, going for 36 points in two of the three games.

No matter when these series end, the NBA Finals will begin June 6.

TRENDS OF THE WEEK

The wins and losses aren’t the only thing one-sided; so are Overs. The Over has hit in all six games of the Eastern and Western Conference finals. The public has been taking advantage. For example, in Sunday’s Game 3 between the Mavericks and Timberwolves, 84% of the bets and 83% of the money was on the Over at the BetMGM Sportsbook .

Meanwhile, bettors were all over the Under in Sunday’s Panthers-Rangers Game 3 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With a total of 5.5 goals, 77% of the bets and 81% of the money was on the Under. New York won the game 5-4 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Josef Newgarden won the Indy 500 for the second straight year on Sunday. With +525 odds to win, they were the shortest odds of any driver in the field. Newgarden pulled in the fourth-most tickets (6.9%) but the most money (11.6%).

UPSETS OF THE WEEK

Davis Riley won the Charles Schwab Challenge by five shots on Sunday. Riley entered the event with +25000 odds to win and only drew 0.2% of tickets. Entering the event, he had just one top-25 finish this season and had missed seven cuts in 15 starts. It was his second career PGA Tour win, as he teamed up with Nick Hardy to win the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

After dropping the first game at home, many bettors expected Minnesota to win Game 2 and cover the spread. After opening as 3.5-point favorites, they closed as 5.5-point favorites, with 65% of the bets and 72% of the money coming in on the Timberwolves to cover. Dallas won 109-108.

The first tennis Grand Slam of the year is underway with the French Open.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek entered as a massive favorite with -155 odds to win after taking the tournament each of the last two years.

At the start of the tournament, she was pulling in the most tickets (28.5%) and the most money (75.4%) in the outright win market.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic generated the most action in pre-tournament betting at +350 to win it all. Djokovic drew the most tickets (12.7%) and the most money (32.4%).

Carlos Alcaraz (+250) had the best odds to win at the start of the tournament. ___

Pro League Network raised $2.2 million to bring gambling to obscure sports like CarJitsu and slapfighting. Read its 20-page pitch deck.

  • Pro League Network has raised $2.2 million to operate "made-for-wagering" sports.
  • Its properties include CarJitsu, slapfighting, and a 3x3 pro streetball league with Kevin Garnett.
  • The startup shared the interactive pitch deck that won over investors like KG and Roger Ehrenberg.

Insider Today

Pro League Network has raised $2.2 million to commercialize niche sports like slapfighting, CarJitsu, and streetball, and allow people to bet on them.

The startup, founded in 2022 by Mike Salvaris and Bill Yucatonis, runs and produces the sports out of its Missouri studio, streams them on social media and other platforms, and regulates them for gambling. Major sportsbooks including DraftKings and Bet365 have carried PLN's properties in states and markets where they're approved for wagering.

The company said it looks for sports that can "pop" with fans on social media, as well as properties that are easy to pick up on so that a casual viewer can feel comfortable placing a bet after watching for a few minutes.

The startup aims to fill gaps in the sports-wagering calendar when there are no or few other live professional sports for people to bet on.

"We're solving a problem," Yucatonis told Business Insider. "We're targeting times a day and days a week that we know are a blemish for operators."

PLN's investors include Roger Ehrenberg, who led the company's first seed round that closed last year, as well as Chris Grove, Kevin Garnett, and several angel investors.

The company said it has about 700,000 followers across social media and garners 10 million organic impressions a week.

"We're an entertainment company making made-for-wagering content," Salvaris said.

For the next 12 months, PLN is focused on building out four of its properties, including CarJitsu, the World Putting League for professional mini golf, SlapFight Championship, and Str33t, a professional 3×3 basketball league that's a joint venture with Garnett's Big Ticket Sports.

As part of that, the company plans to expand production by opening another studio on the East Coast. It currently produces about two to four hours of live content a week.

Selling a 'network' approach to alternative sports

PLN owns the properties it operates, which its cofounders said helped attract investors.

"The portfolio appeals to them because they're placing a bet on different properties," Salvaris said. "If one does hit, there's equity in those leagues … It's a one-to-many bet when you're investing with PLN."

But the cofounders also said it was challenging to explain to investors that the company wasn't pitching another alternative league or the next pickleball.

"We had to get our messaging right," Yucatonis said. "We had to shine a light on the network approach."

They also had to convince investors they had the credibility and experience to actually get these sports regulated for gambling. "Early on, investors were like, who the hell is going to approve this?" Yucatonis said.

The SlapFight Championship was the first sport in PLN's portfolio approved for betting, and it's been regulated in several markets. That was the "holy shit" moment where the company realized it could do this, Salvaris said.

PLN shared the interactive, 20-slide pitch deck it used to raise funding. It removed some details from the version published below, including a breakdown of its funding, how it would use the funds, and its unit economics. Business Insider has viewed the full version.

Ranking college baseball teams in order of their odds to win College World Series in 2024

informative speech on sports betting

The 2024 College World Series field is set, and early betting odds already indicate a few favorites heading into this year's tournament.

College baseball's race to Omaha, Nebraska begins this week. Sixty-four teams begin the competition, but the Tennessee Volunteers have emerged as the early betting favorite before the regional stage begins on Friday. They hope to be one of the eight teams that end up going to Omaha for the final double-elimination bracket to determine this year's champion .

Tennessee won its 50th game of the season when it won the SEC title game over LSU. The Vols shared the regular-season title with Kentucky after both teams finished with a 22-8 conference record. However, Tennessee's 50-11 overall record and tournament championship were enough to give them the top national seed in this year's Men's College World Series.

These are the full power rankings for the 64 teams playing in the 2024 College World Series, according to opening betting odds from BetMGM after Monday's selection show.

Now, they're the No. 2 national seed in the 2024 Men's College World Series and are hosting a regional. They'll open with a game against MAC champions Western Michigan, while Illinois and Indiana State play the other game in their region.

Many people are betting on bronny james to be no. 1 overall pick in nba draft, share this article.

The 2024 NBA Draft is just one month away, and the prospect everyone has been talking about, perhaps more than others, is Bronny James, the son of LeBron James.

Overall, this is expected to be a relatively weak draft. While Alexandre Sarr, a 7-foot-1 French center who played for the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia this past season, is currently projected to be the No. 1 pick, he isn’t a very strong favorite.

By all objective optics, the younger James should be a second-round pick, perhaps even a borderline second-round pick, given his struggles as a freshman at the University of Southern California this season. However, a recent report said that teams are thinking about taking him in the first round, especially since it could entice his father to come on board as a free agent.

In fact, plenty of people have had the chutzpah to place wagers on the younger James being the No. 1 pick in the entire draft.

“At FanDuel, James has attracted 30% of the tickets to be selected first overall by the Atlanta Hawks, the most for any player at the sportsbook,” wrote Doug Greenberg. “BetMGM reports that the USC guard has 36.8% of the bets, well ahead of Alex Sarr (-300), who has the second most at 14%. James was not initially listed in the No. 1 overall market at DraftKings but found himself in the field as of Thursday afternoon.”

But the 19-year-old has very low odds to actually end up as the No. 1 pick.

“James has consensus odds of 200-1 to be taken with the draft’s first pick — tied with Purdue’s Zach Edey for the longest on the board. Those long odds, in addition to the discrepancy in bets to handle, would seem to indicate that a lot of small-money bettors are taking a flier on the wild scenario.”

There are those who feel he should return to college for at least one more year in order to hone his skills and give himself his best chance of succeeding at the next level. While the younger James also entered the transfer portal when he declared for the NBA draft, it looks like he will not be staying in the NCAA.

✔️ Step 3: Make Sure to Use Your Code

✔️ Step 4. Fund Your New Account

Make the minimum deposit required to start an account with your preferred sportsbook promos and link a banking option to your account for deposits and withdrawals.

✔️ Step 5: Visit the Sportsbook & Make Your First Bet

Most Popular Sportsbook Promo Codes & Offers

🤑  bet & get promotions.

These are the simplest of the welcome offers and they can deliver the best reward for your money. For example, you might need to place just a $5 first bet in order to receive $150 or $200 in bonus bets. Sometimes the bonus bets are guaranteed. With some offers, though, you might need to win your initial wager before you can collect bonus bets or site credit.

🤑 First-Bet Insurance Offers

Several online sportsbooks offer protection on their first bets. For example, you might receive “a protected first bet up to $1,000.” If your first bet loses with this type of sports betting promo, you will get the full amount of your first bet back to your account in the form of bonus bets or a bet credit (up to the maximum indicated). It gives you an additional chance to win.

🤑 Deposit Match

These types of welcome offers give your extra wagering capital. An online sportsbook might offer a 20% deposit match bonus when you place a certain amount of money in your account. If you make a $500 initial deposit, for example, then you’d be rewarded with an extra $100 just for getting started.

🤑 Odds Boosts

Large odds boosts can give you a bigger win if you bet wisely. When a sportsbook offers increased odds on a specific bet, you have the opportunity to earn more in profits. If a sportsbook shows the previous odds of the bet before it was boosted, this can help show how much of a boost there really is.

Odds boosts are not as common as welcome offers as they once were, but they are still prominent feature at most operators. For example, an NFL team might be priced at -150 to win a game, but the sportsbook will allow you to bet $5 at boosted odds of +2000 on that team.

🤑 No-Deposit Bonuses

When a state opens up for online sports betting, most of the industry’s top operators will do their best to compete for your business. This is a great way to earn rewards just for signing up for an account. For example, you might receive a $200 bonus for creating an account. Some might offer you a sports betting bonus for “pre-registering” before mobile sports betting goes live, then deliver another bonus on Launch Day.
