K: Ciao a tutti e benvenuti a 5 Minute Italian. I’m Katie. M: And I’m Matteo.

K: In today’s episode, we’ll be learning how to use the word “le” which means “to her” or “for her”.

M: Ascoltiamo la conversazione (let’s listen to the conversation).

I asked Matteo:

M: Che cosa fai quando finisci il latte di soia di tua sorella?

K: What do you do when you finish your sister’s soy milk? Word for word:

Che cosa = what Fai = you do Quando = when Finisci = you finish Il latte = the milk Di soia = of soia Di tua sorella = of your sister?

K: Here’s a good example of how in Italian, we often use “of” (di) to talk about the quality of something “what kind of milk?” “di soia” (of soia). We also use it for possession. So who’s milk? Di tua sorella (of your sister). This isn’t the focus of today’s lesson so we won’t go into details here, but it’s good to notice when you hear it. So we had the question:

K: And Matteo replied:

M: Le compro un’altra bottiglia

K: I buy another bottle for her.

Le = for her Compro = I buy Un’altra = another Bottiglia = bottle

K: Here’s our first example of “le” which means “to her” or “for her”. And Italians say it backwards, so they say “for her, I buy”

M: Le compro.

K: Next, I asked Matteo:

M: Quando lascia le cose in giro?

K: When she leaves things hanging around?

M: Quando = when Lascia = she leaves Le cose = the things In giro = around

K: Here we meet a very common Italian phrase “in giro”. It’s quite difficult to translate in English, but it means something similar to “out and about”. If you call your friend and you ask what they’re doing, they could say “sono in giro” (I’m out and about). Maybe they’re doing errands or just hanging around and it doesn’t make sense to give a specific location (or maybe they’re being mysterious!). You can also use it to talk about things that are left hanging around (not tidied away). So what does Matteo do, quando sua sorella lascia le cose in giro?

M: Le dico di mettere in ordine!

K: I tell her to tidy up!

M: Le = to her Dico = I say Di = to Mettere = put In = in Ordine = order

K: So in Italian, tidy up is “mettere in ordine”, literally “put in order”. And we’ve got another example of “Le”. “Le dico”, literally: “to her, I say”. In Italian, the word “dire” means both “say” and “tell”. If we want to say “say to her” or “tell her” we say:

M: Le dico.

K: And the same for “to him” which we learnt last lesson, which is “gli”. So say to him or tell him is:

M: Gli dico.

K: Finally, I asked Matteo:

M: Quando è raffreddata?

K: When she has a cold? In Italian, we use “to be” (è) in this expression. È raffreddata. It’s a bit like saying “to be colded”. And Matteo replied

M: Le faccio un tè con miele.

K: I make a tea with honey for her.

Le = for her Faccio = I make Un tè = a tea Con miele = with honey.

K: So that was our last example of “le”, “le faccio” (for her, I make). Let’s listen to the conversation again.

K: Before we go, I’d like to give you a little bonus word. In Italian, the formal “you” is exactly the same as the “she/her form”. If you need to say “to you” or “for you” in a formal situation, you can use what you learnt today. Imagine you’re in a hotel reception. If “I give” is “do” and “my passport” is “il mio passaporto”, how would you say: “I give you my passport”

M: Le do il mio passaporto.

K: I offer is “offro”. So how would you say, I offer you a coffee, if you’re speaking to someone you don’t know very well?

M: Le offro un caffè.

K: And this is the same for both males and females in the formal you. “Le do” (I give you formal), Le offro etc.

So if you’d like to get bonus materials for today’s episode, including a table with more example sentences, remember to go to joyoflanguages.com/italianpodcast and scroll down to episode 58.

We’ll see you next time, as we say in Italian:

M: Alla prossima!

Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino's historic Italian castle that inspired Gucci - full tour

At her family's historic italian castle in chianti, caterina de renzis sonnino on transforming a former fortress into an idyllic winery that inspired gucci.

Hellomagazine

Set amid acres of vines and olives, with vistas over the rolling hills of Italy’s Chianti region, Castello Sonnino has a dreamlike quality. It seems timeless and far removed from the turbulent currents of history. But as its chatelaine Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino tells us, the property has quite a past.

During the Renaissance, it belonged to the Machiavelli family and later it was home to First World War statesman Sidney Sonnino, an architect of both the Treaty of Versailles and the League of Nations. However, during much of the last century the castle stood empty, until, in 1987, Caterina and her late husband Baron Alessandro determined to bring it back to life.

Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino with Virginia and Leone

The couple not only carried out a flawless restoration, they also revived Sonnino’s wine-making skills, so that today some of the finest Chiantis hail from here. Above all, they turned the ancient fortress into an idyllic family home. Now, with children Virginia and Leone joining her to welcome us, Caterina reveals proudly: "We are the first Sonnino generation to live as a family in this house –children, friends, dogs and all!"

Caterina, what was your first impression of the castle?

Castello Sonnino sitting room

"I felt a bit scared to be honest because I knew nothing about it and since it was all closed up it was very dark. Then I threw open some shutters, sunlight burst in and found myself standing in the most beautiful enchanted garden filled with birds and flowers.

At home with...

"That was my first view of the Flora and Fauna Room and I decided right then to stay."

 Castello Sonnino living room

This property has been in your family for two centuries. What can you tell us about it?

"Its standout feature is the perfectly preserved medieval bell tower, which dates back to the 12th century, but the place is even older, originating as a Roman castrum or army camp.

Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino

"The main villa was built in the 16th century by the Machiavelli family and is typical of the Renaissance period. Back then, Sonnino used to exist as its own little universe. It had much more land and was totally self-sufficient, with systems for everything from water collection to brick manufacture.  A thousand people would have been living here.

The Sidney Sonnino Archive attracts a lot of interest...

Castello Sonnino dining room

"Yes. Housed in the buildings where our ancestor lived and worked, it contains documents of great significance, including the original opy of the Treaty of Versailles."

How did you meet your husband?

Castello Sonnino library

"Alessandro was from Florence, like me, and we met in 1979. I was studying art in New York, but I was captivated by his qualities. Witty, highly cultured and full of life – as well as handsome – he seemed like a gentleman from another era. On top of that, he brought me to my dream place. We lived happily together for 37 years."

What is it that you like most about your home?“

"As an artist, I get great satisfaction from capturing the light inside the castle and its reflections."

Castello Sonnino tree print wallpaper

You have a strong aesthetic streak...

"By profession, I’m a graphic designer. I specialise in creating brand identities for food and wine companies and have been lucky enough to work with some of the best-known Italian wineries."

Leone de Renzis Sonnino posing in library

"As for my passions, I love painting, photography –especially wedding albums – and flower arranging. I usually pick the leaves and blooms myself and the direct contact with nature’s beauty brings me such joy. It is a kind of meditation."

Do you entertain friends here?

Castello Sonnino bedroom with four poster bed

"We adore having people come to stay. When the children were small, we used to organise weekend lunch parties, preparing a big table full of food for whoever turned up – sometimes ten people, sometimes 40."

"Those were such happy days and great training for what we do now as part of the Gucci Places project. Sonnino is one of eight venues around the world where the brand hosts VIP clients."

Castello Sonnino bedroom

Your family worked very hard to bring the castle back to its best...

"The decision to do it came naturally. In Sonnino, we found somewhere complete, with its own special character, so, guided by respect for its heritage, we decided to restore it and to transform the dusty and decaying vineyards into a contemporary business."

Virginia at Castello Sonnino

Virginia, you left a career in fashion to return to live and work at Sonnino. What can you tell us about the family venture?

"Our mantra is: 'Tradition and innovation'. We produce one of the highest-quality organic olive oils in the region, harvesting the olives by hand and sending them to be pressed within eight hours.

Castello Sonnino exterior view

"Our wines are denominated Chianti Montespertoli and are characterised by elegance, freshness and balance. They’re aged in wooden barrels in our ancient cellars, while the grapes for our traditional Tuscan vin santo are dried in a 500-year-old airing attic that I call my zen room.

Teresa Fiore and Valeria Busnelli

Dr. Teresa Fiore, Inserra Endowed Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies, presented her research work at an invited talk at the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotà, Colombia, on April 23, 2024. Focused on the introduction and the “Waters” section of her book titled Spazi Pre-occupati: Una rimappatura delle migrazioni transnazionali e delle eredità coloniali italiane , the talk emphasized contemporary migrant journeys through the Mediterranean as contemporary forms of transnational relocations containing stories of past emigration and colonialism.

The talk was included in the seminar “Transgressive Italian: An Expanded Language for the Co-existence of Differences,” taught by Dr. Valeria Busnelli , Assistant Professor of Italian in the Departamento de Lenguas y Cultura. It also embraced students from Dr. Alessandra Merlo’s class on Italian Cinema and the theory seminar taught by Visiting Professor, Dr. Chloe Rutter-Jensen.

Dr. Fiore remarked: “I have presented this book on multiple occasions in the U.S. and Italy, but sharing my research in Latin America, and with trans-languaging modality that embraced Italian and Spanish as part of the exchange with the audience, has been quite special to me, especially since it may open up new spaces for collaborative academic endeavors.”

Indeed, the visit was also an opportunity to consider future synergies among faculty for curriculum expansion with an eye toward the role of cinema in the Italian curriculum as well as emigration from Italy to Colombia and vice versa, with possible shared initiatives around the Memoria Presente digital archive .

Radici, chef Tiffany Derry’s Italian restaurant, is now open

Radici, a new Italian restaurant from chef Tiffany Derry, is now open in Farmers Branch next...

By Claire Ballor

8:23 AM on May 2, 2024 CDT

After years of planning, a new concept from celebrity chef Tiffany Derry is now open in Farmers Branch.

Radici is the third restaurant from Derry and her business partner Tom Foley and their first Italian concept. It opened May 1, 2024 next to their James Beard-recognized restaurant Roots Southern Table .

Derry’s professional culinary journey began in the kitchens of Italian restaurants, so Radici is a full-circle return to the cuisine, she said.

“It kind of felt like a coming home,” Derry said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News .

The latest food and drink reviews, recipes and info on the D-FW food scene.

The menu at Radici features a handful of dishes that draw from the canon of northern Italian...

The restaurant is centered, both literally and figuratively, around a wood-fire grill used for most things on the menu that require heat, from the bistecca alla Fiorentina-style ribeye to the bread used in the panzanella. All pastas on the seasonally rotating menu are made fresh, and Derry expects one of them, the lasagna blanca, to be a standing fixture regardless of the season.

The Modenese lasagna — made with a vibrant spinach dough and a white bolognese — is a standout dish for Derry, and she thinks it will be for diners, too. It’s one of a handful of dishes on her menu that draw from the canon of northern Italian cooking she was inspired by during her travels, she said, but Radici doesn’t commit to just one Italian region. Gwyneth Paltrow Poses Topless in Poolside Selfie With Husband Brad Falchuk

Gwyneth paltrow shared several outtakes of her italian getaway, including a sexy selfie of her going au naturel with husband brad falchuk..

Gwyneth Paltrow isn't afraid to bare it all on the 'gram.

The Goop founder kicked off Fourth of July  weekend by celebrating the holiday with some fashion independence, posting a topless selfie from her recent vacation to Italy. As seen in a June 29  Instagram , Gwyneth rocked her birthday suit while sitting poolside with her husband  Brad Falchuk .

Although the Oscar winner skipped the clothes (and makeup) for her outdoor festivities, she did accessorize with retro-styled brown sunglasses and a gold chain medallion necklace. She and her writer-director husband were sitting close together in lounge chairs.

Of course, that wasn't the only eye-catching moment from her Instagram carousel, as one image showed her  17-year-old son  Moses , who she shares with ex-husband  Chris Martin , enjoying a cup of joe at a restaurant. In fact, the candid snapshot appeared to be taken on the same day she and Moses went to the Fondazione Prada exhibit.

During their visit,  Moses donned a preppy look , wearing a blue button-down shirt, matching shorts and a coordinating tie. His mom, on the other hand, opted for a nautical vibe with her vibrant red and white striped blouse and white mini shorts.

The mother-son duo also watched Chris perform with his band  Coldplay  while they were in Milan.

The family's Italian getaway comes two months after the lifestyle guru—who also shares  Apple , 19, with Chris—celebrated Moses' birthday.

"Happy 17th birthday to the boy that fills my soul up every time I look at him," the 50-year-old gushed in April. "@mosesmartin you are the most exceptional, kind, loving human being. You keep us all laughing with your perfect impressions and you inspire us with your harmonies. I deeply adore you more than you could ever imagine! Love, mama."

And while Gwyneth typically keeps her children out of the spotlight, she shared rare insight into what it's like raising a teenage son.

"He will barely let me give him a vitamin,"  she told E!'s  Francesca Amiker  in October 2022, "so it's also like, knowing when to relent and give him his space."

Woman found dead with blood drained from body in Italian church was searching for ghosts, say police

ROME (CNN) — A 22-year-old French woman whose blood-drained body was found in an abandoned church in northern Italy’s Aosta Valley over the weekend of April 6 and 7 had been looking for a haunted house believed to contain ghosts, according to police.

She told family members about her plans before leaving the village near Lyon where she lived, a police spokeswoman in the town of La Salle told CNN.

Police believe the victim could have been attempting to carry out a TikTok stunt, adding that her death could be related to a ghost hunting competition being played in France on the social media platform. The other working theories are that it was a “consented murder” or sacrifice, or an attempt to carry out a social media prank in the deconsecrated church. Police are still searching for a young man who was seen with her. There are also two other missing persons cases in the area which police say could be related.

According to the spokeswoman, the victim and a male friend had been seen in the area dressed “like vampires.” A witness interviewed by police says the young woman was pale and “emaciated” and the man had dark hair and olive skin. The witness told police investigators that she looked like a “walking corpse.”

The dead woman, whose name has not been released, had been stabbed with what investigators say was a camping knife and had bled to death, according to medical examiner Roberto Testi. She also had two gunshots to her neck and one to her abdomen that police say may have been inflicted after she died. Some of the blood had been scraped off the floor and removed from the crime scene, police told CNN. There were no signs of struggle, police say.

Police say they found a package of pink marshmallows and some groceries purchased at a local store near her body and she was wearing beige leggings and a sweatshirt under a long dark coat. The woman had no documents or cellphone on her when a local resident discovered her decomposing body, police say.

The area prosecutor Manlio D’Ambrosi told local media that they are also investigating the presence of a burgundy-colored van that was spotted on surveillance footage near the abandoned church in late March or early April. A spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office declined to add further details.

You know it when you see it: here are some movies that got sex scenes right.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist. Niko Tavernise/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures hide caption

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Movie Reviews

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

'Like it or not, we live in Oppenheimer's world,' says director Christopher Nolan

Movie Interviews

'like it or not, we live in oppenheimer's world,' says director christopher nolan.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.
