Lover is a passionate and raw movie that exposes the flaws in relationships, featuring sincere performances from Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya.

Gist of the Story Caring for custom bikes and longing for his own family, Raj (Raj Tarun) is a free spirit. Responsible and striving for a meaningful existence, Charita (Riddhi Kumar) is a nurse. But how are the lovers going to escape the perilous scenario when she becomes entangled in a serious plot?

Detailed Plot

Arun (Manikandan) and Divya (Sri Gouri Priya) are the two persons around whom the essence of Lover swirls. The romantic tale opens with Divya, an employee at a firm, having fun with her coworkers. She answers the phone and asks Arun why she did not inform him that she was going out with her coworkers, even as she is getting started on her love tale. We now see that Arun is an abnormal lover—insecure and possessive.

Arun apologizes to Divya several times, and they make up, but things quickly return to as they were before. Though Arun makes a lot of effort, his café venture is unsuccessful. His group of pals is also dishonest. He has a major family problem with his mother, who is the only provider, as if that weren’t enough. The woman works for the central government and is taken advantage of by her husband, who also abuses her physically and emotionally. Arun finally asks Divya for one more opportunity after several breakups and reconciliations. Along with Divya’s coworkers, he takes a holiday. This Lover’s fate is what comes from it.

Artistes’ Performances

Manikandan gives a strong performance in every role he does, and his portrayal of the next-door youngster here is especially convincing. The star of the show is Gouri Priya, who plays a woman with a lot of emotional baggage and several intensely emotive scenes. It’s not an easy part to perform, but she pulls it off with ease. The protagonists’ pals are given their fair amount of screen time and engagement in the narrative, keeping it quiet and understated.

Direction / Technical Side

Director Prabhu Ram Vyas explores the intricacies of love and the thin threads that unite two hearts in his brutally honest and sad romantic drama “Lover.” The film examines the emotional rollercoaster that a couple who have been dating for six years must endure against the backdrop of modern-day Chennai.

What Works:

Realism: Director Prabhu Ram Vyas portrays the relationship with unadulterated reality, steering clear of dramatization. The ceaseless rounds of altercations, regrets, and reconciliations seem agonizingly genuine. Cinematography: Shreyaas Krishna captures the ordinary moments that characterize love with subtle, realistic images that add to the film’s reality. Music: Sean Roldan’s moving melodies highlight important moments by evoking the appropriate feelings.

Character Dynamics: Divya: A young lady whose survival and love are at odds. She must make difficult choices that call into question who she is. Arun: He is possessive and insecure, alternating between regret and rage. What makes him human is his imperfections.

With fantastic scenarios, insightful conversation, and a flawless portrayal of the people as a team, the first half of the movie moves at a fast clip. The first half is devoid of air because it is a flawless depiction of today’s kids and how they overcome obstacles in their own unique ways. Seeing how the main characters are managed and how they maintain the snake and ladder aspect of their connection is fascinating.

The movie starts to falter in the second half, and there are some plodding scenes that seem like they might have been cut, especially considering the picture’s lengthy runtime of more than 2.5 hours. Throughout the entire movie, there are also an excessive number of smoking and drinking sequences. But the movie comes to a satisfying conclusion at the end, and it does it with a fair degree of originality and style.

Verdict; “Lover” presents the difficulties of love in a passionate and raw manner. It exposes the flaws in relationships instead of romanticizing them. This movie is engaging to see since Manikandan and Sri Gouri Priya give sincere performances. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Digitally remastered version of 'Ghajini' to release in Kerala on June 7

'Ghajini', the A R Murugadoss directorial, which hit theatres in 2008, is all set to grace the screens once again in Kerala on June 7. As per sources, the movie will also release in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The film features Suriya, Asin and Nayanthara in lead roles was a huge commercial success, prompting the team to remake the film also in Hindi. The Hindi version of 'Ghajini' featured Aamir Khan in the lead, while Asin reprised her role in the film. Film industry tracker Girish Johar revealed that the movie was gearing up for re-release in Kerala next month. According to him, the film's digitally remastered version will hit theatres. “The original famous film #Ghajini will return to Kerala cinemas on June 7th with a new digital version,” he wrote, while sharing the poster of the film on X, formerly Twitter.

The movie was bankrolled by Salem Chandrasekharan under Saravana Creations. The music of the film composed by Harris Jayaraj also received critical acclaim. Roshika Enterprises will re-release the film in Kerala.

Garudan movie review: A gripping tale of Mahabharta’s Karnan choosing what’s right over loyalty

The act of betrayal, so powerful and devastating, has changed the course of many epics. Be it the ancient Bible or contemporary The Game of Thrones , you need Brutus, Judas, and Walder Freys to bring the chaos without which there is no story. No wonder, filmmaker Vetrimaaran is obsessed with it in his stories. While his debut Polladhavan turned out to be a commercial blockbuster, it was his sophomore film, Aadukalam, that distinguished him from the rest. Aadukalam is the story of a mentor betraying his student, which was simultaneously a rooted rural drama and an epic of sorts about morals and ego. However, Garudan, written by Vetrimaaran and directed by RS Durai Senthilkumar, is closer to Vetri’s gangster saga Vada Chennai. Sokkan (Soori) in the latest release finds himself in a similar dilemma as Anbu (Dhanush) faced in Vada Chennai. Both the underdogs are forced to choose between loyalty and Dharma. In a sense, both heroes are a sort of reiterations of Maharabarata’s Karnan, which would have been the perfect title for the film, but Maari Selvaraja beat Durai to it. In essence, Garudan is a ‘What if’ of Karnan turning against Dhuryodhanan by choosing fairness over loyalty.

Sokkan, much like Karnan, is an orphan who lives with sadhus in a temple. Karuna (Unni Mukundan), an heir of a once-royal family in the village of Theni, adopts him as a friend and convinces his grandma, the matriarch, to let him live in the house. Sokkan becomes a loyal servant-cum-friend, who wouldn’t move a finger against his master Karuna.

Karuna has an affluent friend Aadhi (Sasikumar), with whom he manages the local temple in the village. When a politician in Chennai wants to take over a large piece of land, he gets into legal trouble as it belongs to the temple in Theni. He plots to acquire the original document, which is in the possession of Karuna’s grandmother, which leads to the decadence of minds, ego, and friendship, resulting in a gripping tale of betrayal and revenge.

In all of Durai Senthilkumar’s films, the story supersedes everything else, which makes him more of a storyteller than a filmmaker. Hence, he keeps resorting to a narrator to pass on information (a lot of it) to the audience. The village inspector (played by Samuthirakani) does the job here. He lays down the who’s who of the story. Certainly, an easy fix for expositions. The director also comes with convenient solutions in the form of random characters and flashbacks to get through the narrative. However, these are not a matter of concern for the director. The objective here is clarity, not craftsmanship.

All of this gets compensated by the engaging story and the pace at which it gets unraveled. There are two major deaths (among the numerous others) in the film, and the aftermath of both is dealt with swiftness, avoiding the usual sappy cliches. Yet, both make a significant impact. Then we have some well-written characters with a lot of depth, a rarity these days. Be it Aadhi or even the brother-in-law of Karuna, every character play a part in the way the narrative shapes up making the film organic. It also makes the viewer care for them or hate them making him more interested in what happens to them, than how it is all told.

Soori’s Sokkan is written with such care that all of his dimensions are fleshed out perfectly. The comedy actor, who is rebuilding his career as a hero after Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai, indulges in humour, but it is devoid of his distinct body language. When the naïve loyal friend turns into a killing machine, it is not out of place. He is recurrently seen with dogs in the film, an on-the-nose symbolism of his loyalty — but the subtle hint is that the same dog can turn rabid and bite off the hand that feeds. With a few such streaks of brilliant writing and Soori’s restrained performance, Garudan makes us forget all its shortcomings. However, Garudan falls short of becoming an epic like Aadukalam or Vada Chennai because, on top of the lack of finesse in visual storytelling, it doesn’t take risks. It is because Durai Senthilkumar makes films for the masses, and that comes at the cost of a few compromises and conveniences in writing.
