Literature Review (Critical Response Major)

Resource Description

Abstract from the document.

A critical response in essence is an extensive exploration and a discussion of one’s ideas through deep analysis and a comprehensive understanding of literature. An essay may place a reader in a meticulously crafted vessel of thoughts and concepts, serving to guide them on a voyage through the sea full of sophisticated sentences and eloquent arguments, however the fundamental purpose of a critical response is to arrive at port, a clear and certain destination. Critical analysis may serve to inform, persuade or entertain yet a critical response serves to clearly communicate one’s critique and concentrated evaluation of another’s work, thus improving the reader’s understanding of the topic rather than losing them along the way.

Critical analysis is essentially achieved through the identification of an author’s core ideas and their purpose and a thorough analysis of structure and passages. From this, the acquisition of evidence and extensive research, one may build a foundation for their own appropriate thesis which will serve to guide the reader throughout their essay. Integrating a clear and succinct thesis presents one’s perspective and conveys the extent of one’s analysis, drawing upon the reader’s attention. George Orwell begins his ‘ Politics and the English language’ by refuting the common presumptions that hold that the decline of the English language is a reflection of society and politics and that the decay is inevitable. Through his display of a clear and strong thesis in the opening lines, Orwell can continue to critique and analyse, proposing that language is malleable and can be manipulated and for varying purposes which allows him to later show that language may also manipulate people who use it unconsciously. Orwell’s clear and assertive presentation of his thesis influenced the composition of my critical response major, causing me to place emphasis on the clarity and direction of the paragraphs before delving into the analysis. In the early drafts of my major I had often found myself struggling to maintain conviction and understanding of my own thesis as I tended towards merely rewording and summarising other works without featuring my own personal ideas in an assertive tone. Reading through Orwell’s essays allowed me to strengthen my understanding on the formulation of a thesis as a key element that requires an assertive voice and a focused understanding of the topic.

Task #2 - Literature Review

I was just wondering whether you had any examples of the Literature Review task? I’ve read the blog and am really struggling to come to terms with what it’s asking.

Is it a condensed version of the reflection statement?

*****************

Sorry about the late reply. I’ve been WiFi-less and quite busy these last couple weeks.

While the LR and RS share some elements, namely, linking your independent investigation to the development of your MW, the LR is not a condensed version of the RS. If anything is, it would be the Critique of the Creative Process. The LR is at heart a situating of your MW in the texts that have come before it. Essentially, where does your MW fit in to the big picture? How does it build on or draw from what others have done? Which parts of others’ stories, if any, are you extending, exploring, changing?

It may help to understand the purpose of a traditional literature review as you would find in academia (and will encounter in the social sciences). Literature reviews summarise the previous and current research on your area of interest, and explain how that relates to *your* research. In other words, LRs provide context for your readers. You’re connecting what’s been done or found to what you will do or find.

While the structure of an academic lit review is not expected of this EE2 one, the purpose is quite similar - evaluating the usefulness of select sources and then situating your work in the (if you like) canon of texts.

But because the LR is new, there are no samples I can direct you to. Your teachers are far better sources of information than me - they’re the ones setting the task and its marking criteria!

I hope this advice is of some help to you, feel free to follow up if you have any more questions :)
