Bollywood offers a handful of choices when it comes to a well-written, laugh-out-loud comedy. Fewer still are films available for streaming on digital platforms. Here are, what we think, the best Bollywood comedy movies on Netflix streaming right now. These films were playing as of July 29, 2021. Bookmark this page to stay updated with the latest titles.
7. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya (2014)
A light, breezy entertainer you can afford several viewings of, without getting bored, Shashank Khaitaan’s debut film hits the right notes, keeping viewers engaged throughout. The humor is never overdone or repetitive.
A modern spin on the classic DDLJ, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania has all the elements of a Bollywood romance. Varun Dhawan and Ali Bhatt share a warm, easy chemistry that’s visible in their performances and have you rooting for them and their love story. This is mainstream Bollywood romcom done right.
6. Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)
A light-hearted comedy in a small-town setting, Bareilly Ki Barfi is rooted in realistic characters and a relatable universe. After Nil Battey Sannata (2015), Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s second outing was favorably received and Ayushmann Khurrana ’s performance particularly stood out. He convincingly portrayed his part, alongside co-actors Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon. His transformation within the timeframe of the film is remarkable as he is able to transition from a desperate lover to a selfish manipulator who can go to any length to win the love of his life.
You’re constantly reminded of Thiagarajan Kumararaja’s Tamil feature Super Deluxe which plays on a similar terrain (and a genre rarely well explored in Bollywood). But this stylised multi-narrative dark comedy holds its own, thanks to taut storytelling, particularly in the first half and and an incredible ensemble cast including Pankaj Tripathi, Rajkummar Rao , Abhishek Bachchan. A stretched out second half may have dampened the overall pace but Anurag Basu’s Ludo is still a riveting watch.
4. Stree (2018)
Horror comedy is a barely explored, if not a completely untrodden territory for Hindi cinema. We’ve only scratched the surface. But with Raj and DK’s zombie horror Go Goa Gone (2013) and now Stree (2018), we’ve come a step closer to justifying the genre.
From the atmospherics to the sound design, cinematography (Amalendu Chaudhary) to the performances, Stree has a lot going for it. Like all unusual, inexplicable ghost stories we’ve grown up watching, here too we’re served with a tale that defies easy explanations but one that draws you right in. There’s no time for why-abouts when you’re already warned with a ‘based on a ridiculous phenomenon’ disclaimer. Credits also to the writers (Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK) and the director (Amar Kaushik) who keep you riveted in this imaginative tale, which, if not in good hands, could’ve possibly looked outrageously silly.
3. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
This cult classic starring Amir Khan and Salman Khan, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal, Shakti Kapoor is a laugh riot. It utilises both dialogues and situational comedy. The film also uses some overly eccentric characters that add a lot of colour to the film as a whole.
The iconic crime master Gogo, for example. His dialogue, “ Aakhein nikalke gotiya khelunga ” has such a weird ring to it. Yet, when Shakti Kapoor delivers it in his trademark comic style, it becomes infinitely funny. There is a certain charm to this film that is unavoidable and unignorable.

2. delhi belly (2011).
This was not your typical Bollywood fare. A black comedy, Delhi Belly revolved around the life of three roommates – a journalist, a photographer and a cartoonist. A host of confusions arise as they get involved in a gang battle when a package to be delivered to a gangster gets mixed up with stool samples. Imagine the hilarity of the situation and couple that with what ensues. But the bigger task was to have effectively pulled it all off with the desired impact. And Delhi Belly is a smart, crackling comedy thanks to a taut, clever script by Akshat Verma and masterful direction by Abhinay Deo.
1. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! (2008)
Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was proof of Banerjee’s ability to create a smart, brilliantly written story with equally well-written characters. It may have been a comedy, but it was darker than it was. You just needed to look into the fine print, and uncover the subtext. It expects as much of the audience as the audience expects of the film.
It’s a Catch Me If You Can -esque film, with a Delhi twist. A cool thief, a great soundtrack, and an intelligent film that respects the audience. Can’t ask for more.
There we are! These are some of the best bollywood comedy movies on Netflix. Which are your favorites? Let’s talk in the comments below.

Bhediya movie review: Varun Dhawan-starrer is high on comedy and novelty
Bhediya movie review: the amar kaushik directorial is an immersive experience with intense but funny dialogues and clever writing. bhediya stars varun dhawan, kriti sanon, abhishek bannerjee and deepak dobriyal, among others..
If you found Amar Kaushik's Stree one of the most intelligent and rib-tickling horror comedies, his latest outing, Bhediya, only takes things a notch higher. From good comedy and a novel concept to VFX, strong screenplay, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon-starrer Bhediya gives ample moments to laugh and howl throughout. Also read: Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Shahid Kapoor join Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon at Bhediya screening
The story begins with a road construction contractor Bhaskar (Varun Dhawan) going to Arunachal Pradesh wanting to make a highway through the dense forests of Ziro. He is accompanied by his cousin Janardhan aka JD ( Abhishek Bannerjee ) and is joined by a local Northeastern friend, Jomin (Paalin Kabak). As the trio starts their mission of convincing the tribals to give their land and allow road construction, they encounter strange incidents, the most important one being Bhasker getting bitten by a wolf. Soon, he acquires traits and characteristics of the creature and hereon, the folklore about shape-shifting wolf called 'vishaanu' picks up and the story gets more gripping and interesting.
Varun Dhawan is in top form and owns each frame. He has literally pushed the envelope, tried a new genre, and looked so convincing in it. His transformation scenes from a man to a wolf are stunning and scary at the same time with his ripped muscles and sculpted body giving you the chills. He excels in both comic as well as serious scenes. Kriti Sanon is decent and delivers a fine performance, however, her character, I felt, could have had more depth and better placement in the narrative. But in whatever screen time she gets, you enjoy her on screen. Abhishek Bannerjee is magical and hilarious with his comic timing and never misses the bus. His Hindi dialect and the way he delivers his lines (well, he does get the best lines) leaves you in splits. Debutant Paalin Kabak as Varun's Northeastern friend Jomin is quite refreshing and his camaraderie with both Varun and Abhishek is on-point. Deepak Dobriyal as Panda is good, especially with the way he has picked up Northeastern accent and their body language.
While the first half is just about average besides the comedy, it's the second half where all the action lies. Even there, the pace gets a little slow in between with some scenes looking needlessly dragged and stretched, but then Varun's scenes as a wolf and Abhishek's comedy keeps you cracking up for most of the time.
Kaushik once again creates an immersive experience with his direction and brings the best out of his actors. He understands the tricks of blending the two genres - horror and comedy - which is a big challenge, but he aces it. Dialogues are intense, meaningful yet supremely funny. Niren Bhatt's story and clever writing get full marks for a great build-up, the big reveal, and a rather funny climax, which leaves you asking for more. Inserting mention of films such as Jaani Dushman, where Amrish Puri turns into a deadly monster or Junoon where Rahul Roy turns into a tiger, brings a great recall value. There's even the popular Shehnaaz Gill dialogue - 'Kya karu main, marr jaun? Meri koi feelings nahi hai?' which was received with loud cheers and laughter. There are some cringeworthy lines, which I felt could have been done away with and particularly the toilet humour and that one entire sequence can put you off.
Jishnu Bhattacharjee's cinematography gets a special mention here for the way he has captured the deep and dense Ziro forests of Arunachal Pradesh. Bhediya carries a visual appeal that does full justice to the beauty of Northeast India and its landscapes. A sequence where Kriti takes Varun inside the forests to explore its natural beauty is breath-taking and so beautifully shot. The VFX and special effects are stunning and on par with some of the best ones seen in Indian cinema.
The way Bhediya delivers an important message of man-animal conflict without getting preachy even for a bit, impressed me the most. Not just that, there's a very clever mention and discussion around stereotyping of people from the Northeast as 'Chinese' and 'outsiders', which fits so organically in the story and makes you think. There's a scene where Jomin calls out people for generalising all Northeast people as 'Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee ka bachha', expecting them to know Kung-Fu. He makes a strong point when he says, 'being weak at speaking Hindi doesn't make me any less of an Indian'. And in these seemingly intense scenes also, the aptly placed humour just lightens up the mood.
Sachin-Jigar's music is decent, but not all songs leave a mark. Jungle Mein Kaand makes you groove for its peppy music, Baaki Sab Theek is interesting with the quirky rap. Background score is extremely on-point and creates an impact in the jump-scare moments.
Bhediya packs a punch with a lot of impressive elements and is worth watching on the big screen experience for the experience it creates and the messages it gives. Of course, some fine performances and hilarious dialogues would make for a memorable watch.

Thundu movie review: Biju Menon, Shine Tom Chacko film will gauge your patience level at the cost of a ticket
Thundu movie review: despite riyas shereef's story having a decent setup for a funny flick, the biju menon, shine tom chacko-starrer totally misses the mark and doesn't use it to its full potential..
Life’s been rough for civil police officer Baby John lately. In just a few days, he’s crashed an autorickshaw into a motorist while escorting the three-wheeler’s drunk driver to the nearest police station, his kid has been caught cheating during the school exams and he’s suffered injuries in a road accident. Though he thought he had hit rock bottom, there was still further to fall. Baby realises this only when he himself is busted cheating during the head constable exams, bringing shame to the department and his family.
Debutant director Riyas Shereef’s Thundu (a colloquial Malayalam word referring to small pieces of paper with notes written on them for cheating during exams; the word is also used by Malayalis to refer to porn videos) stars seasoned actor Biju Menon as Baby, a poor cop facing a string of misfortunes. Senior CPO Shibin Chandran ( Shine Tom Chacko ) keeps making things worse for Baby by constantly throwing him under the bus over some past beef. Troubles continue to plague Baby as everything he touches seems to turn into a disaster, affecting his family life as well.
Despite Riyas Shereef’s story having a decent setup for a funny flick, Thundu totally misses the mark and doesn’t use it to its full potential.
While the film starts with a mass introduction of Mathew, Baby’s son, stepping into the classroom amidst high anticipation from his classmates and backed by powerful BGM, the character almost fades into the background for a significant portion of the movie, only to resurface towards the end, rendering his character somewhat underutilised. Upon reflection, it becomes apparent that the hype was for the paper chits used for cheating and the process itself, as several close-up shots had revealed the various methods employed by the students to conceal the notes. However, the staging of this sequence fails to convey that focus effectively, as the emphasis remains mostly on the child, which feels like a misstep.
Watch Thundu trailer here:
It is then that Thundu reveals its focus on Baby. Nevertheless, the moments fail to engage due to poor writing. The scenes don’t seamlessly connect, resulting in abrupt transitions. Even after introducing Shibin, the tension between him and Baby is not effectively communicated. They exchange tense looks, with Shibin often grinning at Baby while the latter remains in a perpetual state of embarrassment due to his misfortunes. However, as the true reason behind their conflict is concealed for an unnecessarily long time and the tension remains surface-level, this storyline becomes somewhat tedious over time.
Even the other conflicts lack the punch required to convey their significance in the narrative, resulting in everything seeming rather bleak. Though Thundu tries to elicit some laughs occasionally, many of the jokes and accompanying moments are poorly crafted and written, leading to wasted efforts by Riyas and co-screenwriter Kannappan.
Another major shortcoming that prevents Thundu from reaching heights is weak character development. It’s not just Baby; characters such as his wife (played by Unnimaya Prasad), Shibin, Mathew, Raghavan (Raffi) and others lack depth, failing to make a significant impact.
However, Biju Menon makes an effort to elevate Thundu to some extent with his charm, decently portraying Baby’s helplessness even in less compelling scenes. He once again wears the police uniform with finesse, providing viewers with some relief. Shine Tom Chacko, on the other hand, surprises with his restrained performance, steering clear of the irritating persona he exhibits in real-life interviews. His efforts would have been more rewarding with a deeper character. Despite attempts by Raffi, Sajin Cherukayil, Zhinz Shan, and Shaju Sreedhar to inject humour at times, their scope is limited.
One of the major disappointments in the film is Jimshi Khalid’s cinematography. While he has consistently demonstrated excellence in his previous works such as Thallumaala (2022), Love (2020) and Kappela (2020), his cinematography in Thundu fails to enhance the movie effectively. In particular, the numerous extreme close-up shots used in the cheating scenes, seemingly employed to give an adrenaline rush, are out of sync with the overall tone of the movie, ultimately proving counterproductive. Gopi Sundar’s music too fails to make a significant contribution to the film and sometimes disregards the atmosphere presented.
Thundu movie cast: Biju Menon, Shine Tom Chacko, Unnimaya Prasad, Raffi Thundu movie director: Riyas Shereef Thundu movie rating: 1 star

One could say that comedy movie characters are the most memorable, and we would have to agree with that. Bollywood has given us many iconic and hilarious characters that have made us laugh out loud and stayed with us after the movie ended. Such characters leave us rolling on the floor with laughter every time we rewatch the movie. Let’s take a look at some of the most hilarious characters in Bollywood movies that made us laugh hysterically.

Bhool Bhulaiya set a new bar in Bollywood for the horror genre, but it was a laugh-out-loud comedy too. It gave us many iconic characters, but the most memorable and funniest would be Rajpal Yadav’s Chhote Pandit. Rajpal stole the show with his performance, portraying his physical comedy talents with impeccable comic timing and dialogue delivery. Chhote Pandit remains one of his funniest characters ever. Rajpal even reprised his role in the sequel, which was released in 2022.

3. Manav (Jaaved Jaffrey)
Dhamaal remains one of the best comedy movies of the 2000s and Jaaved Jaffrey’s portrayal of Manav is a big reason for that. Manav is innocent, slow, and often dumb-witted at times and oblivious to his surroundings. Jaffrey performs brilliant as Manav, portraying his physical comedy skills and delivering epic one-liners. Manav remains the funniest character in the film for most viewers.

Andaz Apna Apna is considered one of the best comedy movies of all time, which also gave us the hilarious supervillain Crime Master Gogo. He is an eccentric and overdramatic man searching for diamonds but can be easily swayed if you praise him. The bizarre costume, funny mustache, and many iconic dialogues combined with Shakti Kapoor’s outstanding performance give us a hilarious and memorable comedic character.
8. Leeladhar Maharaj ( Mithun Chakraborty When we talk about the few legends in the Indian f >> Read More... )
Though the movie OMG deals with some serious issues and questions the existence of religious maharajas, one can’t deny that it is essentially a comedy. Apart from Paresh Rawal, Mithun’s character delivers many laughs to the audience. Not only his dialogues but his expressions, dance routine, and even his silence were hilarious for the viewers. Even his way of sitting and putting his hand on his face is funny. Mithun did an excellent job at making the character hilarious without even saying a word.

Aankh Micholi Review
I don’t remember the last time I watched a movie so bad that I wanted to exit the theatre in the first twenty minutes. But well, Umesh Shukla’s Aankh Micholi did that to me. The movie, which stars Abhimanyu Dassani, Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Abhishek Banerjee, Sharman Joshi, Grusha Kapoor and Darshan Jariwala, revolves around a family of misfits. Touted to be a comedy of errors, there’s nothing funny about the film. It tries to follow the pattern of classic Bollywood comedy films like Golmaal, Dhamaal and Hera Pheri but fails miserably.

Aankh Micholi Storyline
The 2 hours 24 minute long film begins with the Singh family’s introduction where every member has a medical condition but without any practical reason or backstory. The father Navjot Singh (Paresh Rawal) has a habit of forgetting everything. Yuvraj Singh (Sharman Joshi) is the elder brother who cannot hear, Batti (Abhishek Banerjee), the second brother stammers, Yuvraj’s wife (Divya Dutta) uses wrong proverbs and Paro (Mrunal Thakur) has night blindness.
The Singh family wants Paro to get married but without the potential groom knowing about her condition. They end up welcoming an NRI family. The would-be-groom Rohit Patel (Abhimanyu Dassani) instantly likes Paro but there’s a twist to that. Even he has a secret that he’s hiding. How Paro and Rohit’s families hide their respective secrets while preparing for their wedding is what makes this comedy of errors.

Performances
Aankh Micholi is the perfect example of how to waste talented actors. I mean just look at the star cast – there’s Paresh Rawal, Sharman Joshi, Divya Dutta, Abhishek Banerjee and Vijay Raaz but it just feels like their performances are overshadowed by an outdated story and half-baked script.
Mrunal Thakur , who has otherwise given some great performances, falls short in Aankh Micholi. Her comic timing is just bad and chemistry with her on-screen lover boy – disappointing. Abhimanyu Dassani fails to spread his charm as Rohit. Nothing works in his favour in the movie. He struggles with his comic timing.
Technical Aspect
Umesh Shukla’s direction is just disappointing. At points, it’s hard to even believe he’s the same filmmaker who earlier directed films like OMG and 102 Not Out. Jitendra Parmar’s writing couldn’t have gone more wrong. The film feels outdated and shoddy – all thanks to his script. Sameer Arya’s cinematography is up to the mark. Both Switzerland and Punjab are shown beautifully. But it is Steven H. Bernard’s editing that ruins it all. Sachin-Jigar’s music is decent.
Drawbacks of Aankh Micholi
Confusing plot: If this is how confusing a comedy of errors needs to be to leave an impact then it’s good we don’t have many new films in this genre. Aankh Micholi is so confusing and bothersome, it will test your patience.
Lame punchlines and dialogues: Where was the humour? It just wasn’t there. The punchlines were so unfunny and dialogues were so lame, I questioned why this film was made in the first place. There was absolutely no comic timing and it feels unfair to even call Aankh Micholi a comedy film.
Atrocious Editing: Steven H. Bernard’s bad editing ruins Aankh Micholi even more. The shabby jump cuts made me feel like a college intern did it for free.
In a time when comedy films are getting better with their dialogues and writing, Aankh Micholi is just a misfit. The lack of conviction in performances is what makes this film even more disappointing.
