PhD Programme in Peace and Development Research

The PhD Programme in Peace and Development Research aims to develop knowledge and skills that enable independent and professional research, and to contribute to the research field through a doctoral dissertation.

The PhD programme

Peace and Development Research at the University of Gothenburg is a leading site of interdisciplinary enquiry. The research environment consists of ca 50 researchers using a broad range of approaches to investigate various themes in peace and development in different regions of the world. These themes include but are not limited to, conflicts, security, gender, human rights, global political economy, migration, regional and global governance, and resistance.

The PhD programme comprises 240 credits in total. Of the total credits, the dissertation comprises 180 credits, and the course work comprises 60 credits. Doctoral studies in Peace and Development Research often involve fieldwork outside Sweden.

The PhD programme is governed by the Higher Education Ordinance, The University’s and the Faculty’s rules and regulations for third-cycle studies, and the General Syllabus.

More extensive information about the PhD programme can be found in the General Syllabus.

Specific entry requirements

In order to be eligible for the PhD Programme in Peace and Development Research, you must, in addition to general entry requirements, fulfill the specific entry requirements.

You must have completed a degree at second cycle level within the area of international relations, peace and conflict studies or global development studies, or the equivalent degree/knowledge obtained within or outside Sweden.

Doctoral employment

If you are accepted for doctoral education, you will be employed as doctoral students at the department. As a doctoral student, your employment typically lasts four years. Up to 20 percent of the doctoral studies can consist of departmental service, and the doctoral position is then extended by the corresponding time. This means that the total period of employment will be a maximum of five years. Exceptions apply to sick leave, parental leave and union trust assignments.

Salaries for doctoral students are made according to local agreements at the University of Gothenburg and are negotiated by trade union representatives.

Doctoral positions are funded through faculty grants, external research grants or funding from other employers. When financing from another employer, a special agreement is required, that regulates the relationship between the University of Gothenburg/the department, the doctoral student and the employer. The type of financing that is relevant for the position always appears in the position announcement. Please note that student loans or private means are not accepted.

Doctoral students at the University of Gothenburg are government employees and are thus covered by a number of benefits and insurance.

Supervision

Supervisors are assigned in consultation between the doctoral student, and the Director of PhD Studies. Each doctoral student is assigned a main supervisor and an assistant supervisor. Prospective doctoral students do not need to obtain supervisors before applying for a PhD programme.

The dissertation

The dissertation can be written in the form of a compilation, which means several articles and/or papers preceded by an introductory chapter so-called Kappa, or as a monograph, i.e. a coherent book.

Doctoral students are expected to present their work at a number of occasions during the PhD programme. At the beginning of the second year at the programme, the doctoral student presents a detailed project proposal, the dissertation PM, for the entire department, and receives questions and feedback from commentators. When approximately half of the programme is completed, the doctoral student presents parts of the dissertation at a so-called mid-term seminar.

When about six months remain to work on a dissertation, the doctoral student presents the entire dissertation script on a mock dissertation, and receives comments from an external opponent and an third reader.

Finally, the doctoral student defends their dissertation in a public defense, where the student discusses the dissertation with an opponent, and a grading committee decides whether the dissertation is approved.

Future careers

A doctorate in Peace and Development Research can lead to a research career within or outside the academia, to teaching at various levels within the university, or to work in development aid, community analysis, or foreign policy within civil society organizations, government agencies, supranational organisations or private companies.

Programme courses

The first two years of your doctoral studies comprise a number of mandatory and elective courses on third cycle level.

Applying for a doctoral (PhD) position

Doctoral education is organised at the faculty or department level. Application procedures and periods differ between faculties and departments. While some of them advertise their doctoral positions around the same time every year, mostly in spring, others advertise their positions on an ongoing basis.

You apply for a doctoral education position within a certain subject area. Admission to a doctoral education position is restricted and competition for advertised positions is usually tough.

Finding a suitable position

Any funded doctoral positions at Lund University are advertised on our vacancies page on this website (see link below). Select the category 'Doctoral students'.

Once you have found a position you are interested in, carefully read through the vacancy announcement to find out whether you meet the requirements.

Before you apply, we recommend that you also check the relevant faculty's or department's website for any additional information about the application process.

Should you have any questions about a specific position, please contact the contact person(s) listed in the vacancy announcement.

Employment as a doctoral student

As a general rule, a person admitted to doctoral studies at Lund University is employed through a doctoral studentship.

If you have a doctoral studentship, you are considered to be both a student and an employee with a salary during your doctoral studies. As an employed doctoral student, you are covered by local and central agreements concerning your terms of employment.

In parallel to the doctoral education programme, as a doctoral student you may work with administrative and teaching duties (no more than 20% of a full-time position).

Lund University is responsible for education-related matters and the study environment regardless of how you finance your doctoral studies. All doctoral students also have access to the University’s Occupational Health Service.

Other forms of financing

It is possible to undertake your studies using another form of financing, such as an external scholarship or an agreement between Lund University and an external employer.

Financed by external employer

If you are admitted to doctoral studies and have a position with an employer other than Lund University, you are solely a student, and it is the employer who is responsible for employer-related matters.

External scholarships

As a doctoral student with a scholarship, you are solely a student. You are therefore not entitled to contractual employment benefits at Lund University.

In some cases, a doctoral student with a scholarship is entitled to apply for a doctoral studentship when three years remain of the third-cycle studies.

PhD Admission and Funding

Thanks for your interest in pursuing a PhD in Sustainability Science at LUCSUS. Here we answer some commonly asked questions.

How do I find current PhD vacancies at LUCSUS?

Find current vacancies at LUCSUS on our website

All PhD positions are also announced through the Lund University website:  Vacancies at Lund University

How does funding a PhD at LUCSUS work?

Pursuing a PhD at LUCSUS requires funding for the PhD student. PhD students are considered employees in Sweden, so this funding requirement includes covering salary for the PhD student, as well as required social benefits (e.g., employer contributions to pension and health care systems), and University overhead (paying for the use of LUCSUS premises, administrative staff, etc).

Funding for PhDs at LUCSUS is generally done in one of two ways. These positions are always openly announced and competitively selected based on qualifications for the stated job requirements.

  • Funding is provided by a large institutional grant, e.g., to LUCSUS or another department or center. This was the case with the LUCID Program (finished in 2018) and is the case for the Lund University Agenda 2030 research school (recruitment has closed, first students to start September 2019).
  • Funding is provided directly by competitively allocated research project money, generally won by the person who will be the PhD’s main supervisor. Funding may come from a variety of sources, particularly Swedish research agencies such as Formas or the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). This is the case with many of the current PhD students at LUCSUS. Applications are generally due in April, with decisions reached in November, and the positions starting sometime the following year.

There is also a possibility for self-financed PhD studies. More information about independently financed PhDs on our website

What if there is no currently advertised PhD position in my area of interest?

It is always possible to directly contact a LUCSUS staff member who is qualified to serve as a PhD supervisor whose research is closely aligned with your interests, to explore possibilities to develop research projects or funding proposals together, or ask them if they have or anticipate having funding available for a project of mutual interest. Note that PhD supervisors must be a permanent employee, e.g., a lektor/assistant Professor may be an assistant PhD supervisor, and a docent/Associate Professor or full Professor may be a main PhD supervisor.

If you contact a potential supervisor directly, it is important to first familiarize yourself with their work, and follow best practices when contacting them. Here are some tips to do so, from an  ecologist blog by Dr Jacquelyn Gill , and a blog Kimberly Nicholas wrote several years ago .

Do I need to speak Swedish to work at LUCSUS?

English is the working language of LUCSUS. Unless otherwise stated for a specific position, Swedish knowledge is not required (although you are encouraged to learn Swedish while you are here!).

fully funded phd scholarships in sweden

PhD Position Fully Funded in Evolutionary Genomics – Diversity and Evolution on Lichen-Associated Basidiomycetes at Uppsala University in Sweden; The Department of Ecology and Genetics (IEG) is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies. We are now looking for a PhD student in evolutionary genomics, with specific focus on diversity and evolution on lichen-associated basidiomycetes within the Evolutionary Biology program at IEG. The project is led by Dr. Veera Tuovinen Nogerius. The PhD position is fully funded for 4 years.

Project description: Despite the symbiotic nature of lichens being discovered over 150 years ago, they remain highly enigmatic to this date. Recent studies have shown that basidiomycete yeasts are frequent and diverse components of many lichens. However, in general we lack comprehensive knowledge about the lichen-associated basidiomycete diversity, distribution, and roles in the symbiosis.

We are looking for a PhD student who will study the diversity and genome evolution of lichen-associated basidiomycete yeasts in common lichens, and their interactions with other organisms in the thalli. The diversity of lichen-associated basidiomycetes will be studied by long-read metabarcoding and high-throughput sequencing. In addition, cell-sorting and single cell genomics will be employed to generate genomic data of selected basidiomycete taxa from lichen thalli. The data will be used to build a genomic framework for lichen-associated basidiomycetes, and to assess their genomic features for signatures of the symbiotic lifestyle and their functional potential. Furthermore, the organismal landscape and interactions within lichen thalli will be studied with state-of-the-art advanced microscopy methods.

Duties: The PhD student will be expected to conduct molecular laboratory work and to prepare samples for sequencing with modern NGS technologies. The project will include generating targeted high-throughput amplicon data, whole genome sequencing of axenic cultures, method-development for extracting basidiomycetes from lichen thalli for single cell genomics, and advanced microscopy. Field work and preparing and maintaining axenic cultures will/can be part of the project. The student is expected to learn to analyze the produced data, write scientific articles and a thesis and take courses relevant to the research project.

PhD-students at IEG are encouraged to enroll in teaching. The levels and content of teaching depend on the availability of teaching duties and the interests of the student, but will in general not exceed 20% of full-time employment and mainly consist of teaching assistant roles in different undergraduate courses offered by the biology section. Teaching adds additional time to their contracts.

Qualifications required: To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in evolutionary biology, genetics, microbial ecology, systematic biology, bioinformatics, or other relevant field, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as curiosity and drive for continuous learning and problem solving, scientific maturity, resilience, ability to take initiative and work both independently as well as in a group. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in English, both orally and in writing.

Qualifications desired   Familiarity with lichens, fungi and/or microbial symbioses will be advantageous. Experience in molecular laboratory work, bioinformatic analyses and advanced microscopy are meriting. About the employment The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 §7. Scope of employment: full-time. Starting date september 2024 or as agreed. Location: Uppsala. Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University’s rules and guidelines.  For further information about the position, please contact Veera Tuovinen Nogerius, [email protected] .

Application instructions The application should include 1) a letter describing yourself, your research interests, why you want to pursue a Ph.D., and why you are suitable for the position, max. 2 A4 pages 2) your CV, 3) a brief description of your education, max. 1 A4 page 4) a copy of your master’s degree and your course grades, along with a copy of your master’s thesis, 5) names and contact details of at least two referees (email addresses and phone numbers), and 6) any publications if applicable. The application should be written in English.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than June 11, 2024. UFV-PA 2024/1705 . Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a difference in society. Our most important asset is all of our 7,600 employees and 53,000 students who, with curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces.
