Every African child deserves an education

donors supporting education projects in kenya

Education for children in remote and rural communities is hampered by many inequalities, including poverty, cultural attitudes and discrimination.

It is estimated that 31% of children in Kenya are out of school, the majority of whom are girls (UNESCO, 2018).Children often walk in excess of 5km to school.

Kenya is striving to offer free education for all primary (6-12 years) and a subsidised system for secondary (12-18) students.

Many children are older than their intended class group due to non-attendance associated with poverty, limiting their progress and causing many to drop out of education without vital basic skills.

donors supporting education projects in kenya

Government education funding is limited to training and salaries of teachers along with some textbooks.

Buildings and equipment must be provided by parents and the community.

Tuition fees, cost of textbooks, uniforms, transportation and other expenses create huge difficulties for families living below the poverty line.

We are constantly looking to improve the facilities in several schools by providing additional classrooms, kitchens, toilets and water tanks to collect rainwater.

With your support, the charity strives to provide children with the education they need and to overcome the barriers that stand in their way.

donors supporting education projects in kenya

Educational projects currently include building a secondary school in an area called Ivonangya, which is in the extreme northwest of the Kenyan bush, where secondary school facilities are almost non-existent.

Phase one has seen the completion of toilet blocks for the students, an administration block and dining room and kitchen facilities.

The charity has set up a dedicated unit at Ngaiee Special School for the education of blind children. Without this special unit these children would not have access to education. The charity is very grateful to its donors for equipment.

Thanks to your donations, the charity has been able to supply schools and students with much-needed provisions.

Transforming education in Kenya

Significant progress have been made to expand access to education in Kenya and improve learning. Still persistent challenges remain – like regional and gender disparities and inequitable access to learning – which demand transformative solutions.

GPE is helping the government and its partners to prioritize equitable solutions to improving learning outcomes. Working with GPE and other partners, Kenya will boost the quality of teaching , learning and pre-primary education with attention to enhancing equity, access and inclusion and achieving gender parity.

This will be done through better curriculum support materials, more robust use of technology to help implement competency-based curriculums and assessment, and school-based teacher development.

Steps to increase access to learning also include providing meals and improving water, sanitation and hygiene as well as learning environments.

Kenya: Investing in education for a better future

  • Kenya is committed to becoming a newly industrialized nation by 2030 and acknowledges that quality education is vital to achieving this vision.
  • With GPE support, Kenya has made impressive progress, including a 70% reduction in the cost of textbooks, and the equal enrollment of girls and boys at primary level. Additionally, the training of 102,000 teachers in improved teaching of math supported improved student competency in math.
  • A new information management system has transformed the delivery of education in Kenya. Real-time data allows the government to monitor indicators such as attendance, enrollment and staffing in a transparent and reliable way.

Education Support Program

Copy of DONATE TO (2).png

Moving Mountains provides support for around 70 children and young people each year in Kenya to pursue their education. This includes support for children and young people at primary school, secondary school and for students attending college, university or vocational courses.  Each beneficiary we support is an individual case with whom we work closely, providing mentoring and counseling, monitoring educational progress, providing support with career planning and future employment and involving the family, community, school and other local contacts to ensure that each beneficiary feels fully supported and is able to achieve their full potential.

Support the education of a child in need by making a donation to Moving Mountains Kenya's educational programs today.

Beneficiaries must meet the criteria of Moving Mountains Kenya 's Educational Support Policy. This stipulates that all beneficiaries of the programme must be selected from disadvantaged, low-income households and that they must maintain high levels of attendance, good academic performance and excellent conduct and application to their studies.

Kayieye Primary School (3)

History of the Project

Supporting education and vocational training for disadvantaged young people and children was the original basis of the formation of Moving Mountains in Kenya and remains at the heart of our work, continuing to be one of our core activities in Kenya. Moving Mountains Chairman and founder Gavin Bate began supporting street children in Nairobi, collaborating with Muthurwa Primary School, serving an urban slum community in Nairobi, and headteacher   Mrs . Serah Kinuthia to ensure a basic education for these children and young people who had been excluded from education and were on the margins of Kenyan society.  This support has continued to this day with   Mrs . Kinuthia now the head of Moving Mountains' Educational Support Programme. We have supported many students right through their education, from primary school to college and into employment. We have so many great stories and individual successes, students from the streets, from urban slum communities and from impoverished rural households who have gone on to gain an education and employment and who are now providing an income for their families and supporting the development of their communities.  Many of our staff members in Kenya have gone from being former beneficiaries of the charity, supported through their education by Moving Mountains, to become community leaders and role models.   Beneficiaries   who have graduated from our education programme are now mentoring the next generations of young people through their education and into employment and sustainable livelihoods.

Main Donors

- Moving Mountains Trust   - Moving Mountains Volunteers - Africampers  - Individual donors

Volunteering  - teaching non-examinable subjects such as music, sport, arts, ethics, plus running extra-curricular clubs and providing small group reading lessons, mentoring and group therapy work.

Future Aims

We will continue to support disadvantaged students through their education in Kenya, providing support to children and their families and working with the schools and the wider   community to ensure each beneficiary receives full support to pursue their education and flourish.  If you would like to support the education of a student in Kenya through Moving Mountains please get in touch to discuss options:  [email protected] .

Or you can make a donation directly to our educational programs in Kenya.

The VANESSA GRANT TRUST  brings educational opportunities to children and young adults in rural Kenya . Children are Kenya ‘ s future and education is the most important thing we can provide for them . The Vanessa Grant Trust develops schools by supporting continual infrastructural development , staff training and volunteer support , so critical for effective and exciting education , using our network of national   and international support . A little money goes a long way in Kenya and it provides immense satisfaction to see what an impact this makes on people ‘ s lives .

Naomi Ndung’u founded the Vanessa Grant School for children with Special Needs. Having significantly improved the lives of many mentally and physically handicapped Kenyan children, after 20 years, Naomi was ready to begin a new project. Naomi’s new project – called Flames of Hope – is a combined school and sheltered living place for young people who have no speech. It will also be a home for those who have graduated from the Vocational Training School and are now working in the Rongai community, but who need a secure and caring place to return to each night. At the moment these young people have to leave their employment in the holidays as they currently live at the Vocational Training School which follows the national term dates and closes in the holidays.

Building layout

Flames of Hope is situated on two adjacent plots of land close the Vanessa Grant Girls’ School (VGGS). Construction work started in June 2017. This is being phased, with the first phase consisting of a washroom, a dormitory, a teaching room and an office. A second classroom was added in 2019.

Mai Soli Foundation is constantly working to change systemic issues of gender inequality in developing countries, focusing initially in Bangladesh.   Our aim is to level the playing field for young girls by investing in their education, creativity, and entrepreneurial potential through the help of local teams and support of our civil society organizations.

We provide a hands-on education in entrepreneurship and business, as well as confidence building and leadership exercises. These areas of knowledge will address the core of why girls are often forced into child marriages, challenging the patriarchal power dynamic to set the stage for women to become leaders in their societies. Together, we can fight back against gender inequality.

Education Cannot Wait

ECW in Kenya

Kenya hosts more than half a million refugees and asylum-seekers – over half of whom are children and adolescents. Many refugee families are marginalized and live in poverty, with limited access to basic services, including education. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated pre-existing inequalities and vulnerabilities. With the closure of schools, many refugees and marginalized children and adolescents could not access remote learning opportunities, putting them at risk of never returning to school. To respond to the crisis, Education Cannot Wait (ECW) launched a First Emergency Response (FER) to support partners in providing remote learning resources, improving sanitation in schools, increasing teacher capacity and supporting children with disabilities. All activities related to this FER concluded in 2021.

COVID-19 Results

Programme info kenya hosts more than half a million refugees and asylum seekers – over half of whom are children and adolescents who have fled violence and instability in their home countries. in their communities, they often work in the informal sector and keep their children out of school to help supplement their incomes. with the onset of covid-19, many refugees lost their jobs, further straining resources. the education sector was heavily impacted by covid-19. the pandemic led to national school closures, drastically increasing the number of out-of-school children and adolescents. the resources and infrastructure did not support remote learning environments. even as schools reopened in january 2021, safety was a concern due to overcrowded classrooms, minimal training for educators and a lack of water, sanitation and hygiene (wash) facilities in learning environments. due to the interruption of education caused by covid-19, many refugee children and adolescents are at risk of never returning to school, further marginalizing them and putting them at increased risk of abuse and exploitation. to support refugee and host community children in kenya, ecw launched a first emergency response (fer). the programme supported partners to provide remote learning opportunities during school closures and created new water, sanitation and hygiene (wash) facilities to establish safer learning environments and address urgent needs. additionally, funding supported training for educators across an array of areas to improve capacity and address students’ needs. to promote inclusion, grantees held community engagement events and awareness campaigns to advocate for the rights of children with disabilities. currently, there is no ecw programme in kenya. programme components.

  • Engaging community members. Grantees hosted community engagement sessions and launched campaigns to promote rights and increase awareness of children and individuals with disabilities.
  • Ensuring access to hygiene facilities.  Provided schools with improved WASH facilities that are accessible to children with disabilities and are gender segregated. Grantees ensured schools had access to clean drinking water.
  • Increasing educator capacity. Funding provided training for teachers on gender, inclusion, online platforms, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services, hygiene and lesson planning. Educators received daily learning kits to distribute, along with specialized plans for children with disabilities.
  • Provide remote learning opportunities. Grantees provided remote learning platforms through radios, online tools, SMS-based platforms and airtime for educators to reach children at home.

Thanks to...

Provide a route to safety and opportunity for vulnerable girls.

In Kenya’s North Rift region, harmful cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriage, poor school facilities, a weak child protection system, and a nomadic lifestyle undermine the well-being of children and keep them from fulfilling their potential in life.

World Vision is working to increase children’s access to education and thereby open door of opportunity for them. In addition, they are partnering with communities to raise awareness of children’s rights, create environments that protect children, and strengthen the capacity of local organizations that respond to abuse so that children suffering harm are supported in their recovery.

Kenya Child Protection Program Update

The kenya child protection and education project provides girls safety and opportunity.

One of the most effective ways to combat FGM and early marriages is education. World Vision’s Kenya Child Protection and Education project will benefit approximately 17,000 children in Kenya’s North Rift Provence.

Early marriage, FGM, and a low retention and completion rate for secondary schools go hand-in-hand for girls in this region of Kenya. Many girls have an interest in attending school and may even enroll, but they may be seen as more valuable by their fathers as a source of cattle, received as a dowry for marrying them off to much older men. Poor economic conditions and a recent drought have resulted in even further challenges for families in the area, making it even less likely that families would be willing or able to send their children to school—especially girls.

Kenya Education Endowment Fund

Corporate and service organizations that support keef.

Since our beginning as a registered charity in 2004, the Kenya Education Endowment Fund (KEEF) has relied on individual donors and service organizations to provide scholarships for the educational needs of students. A few corporate partnerships have sponsored groups of students and have also enabled KEEF to build school classrooms, healthy kitchen facilities, latrines, and libraries.

Beginning now, 2019, we are actively connecting with more corporations and service organizations to fund construction projects, and also student focussed projects, such as the annual student workshops.

We anticipate expanding our secondary and post-secondary student scholarships because we know from experience and from UNESCO research that “Education saves lives and transforms lives, it is the bedrock of sustainability.” More scholarships will allow us to bring more students and their families out of poverty and enhance their communities. Because of our past success in utilizing mainly individual donations, we are very optimistic about what is achievable with increasing corporate sponsorships.

Since 2010, they have generously provided funding for several KEEF projects, including the Bondeni Primary School library, the KEEF workshops and they also sponsored several students to attend secondary school.

In the past five years, GC4C has focused funding on construction projects that improve the health and well being of students. This includes a new classroom at one secondary school, new kitchen facilities at several schools, water collection systems and latrine construction. They have also purchased new equipment and furniture. The positive impact of sustained support such as this from GC4C cannot be overstated.

We thank GC4C for their commitment and confidence in our work and encourage you to check out their web site at www.gc4c.org

The board and members of GC4C diligently researched registered charities that weren't aligned with political, religious or ideological causes before deciding to support KEEF, a non-profit fund launched by a group of retired Canadian teachers, nurses and other professional women. They were greatly impressed with the low-overhead, hands-on approach of KEEF, which operates in mostly rural communities in western Kenya’s Kakamega County. Most families eke out a living from subsistence farming and can't afford the $600 required annually to send their children to fee-based high schools and universities.

Mark Skinner, CEO SSA Group

For many years I sought a charitable endeavour where almost 100% of the funds raised went directly to the actual cause. I started personally sponsoring young adults in KEEF’s educational program in 2016. After 2 years of watching closely how committed, passionate and determined KEEF was in assisting these kids and their communities, I decided in later 2018 to sponsor 20 kids from 2019 onwards. I am determined to grow this number to over 70 in the upcoming years. We make an annual commitment as a business to be involved and to give back, and have chosen KEEF as the charity. Each of our offices has committed to doing annual fundraising which will raise additional money for educational sponsorships and possible capital projects.

I genuinely state that all staff working for SSA have become invested in this cause. It allows each of us to give something back. We take heart from the fact that we are making a difference as we trade to make profit. We have chosen very carefully to get behind this program. The fact that almost all funds committed go to the root cause, an educational cause we believe in, is profound.

Ebru Pinar, Founder

Marbling Creations Inc was created 2 years ago upon my return from an 80 days volunteering trip to East Africa. My very first volunteering project was with KEEF for 3 weeks and it has become my most favorite non-profit organization ever because of it's amazing team behind the scenes who truly dedicated their lives to it and also seeing the huge difference that they make in young Kenyan’s life through education.

As a former educator I once more was reminded of the power of education while I was in East Africa and how big of a difference it could make in young Africans’ lives to get them out of poverty. I solely created this business model to empower Africans in 3 different ways by designing sandals that are handmade in Kenya to sell them here in North America to give back for education.

I would love to end my words with two unforgettable quotes by our company's biggest inspiration and incredible leader that we look up to, the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela;
