UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Graduate students looking to highlight their scholarly achievements, compete for monetary awards and recognition, and hone their research communication skills are now able to register for second annual Penn State Three Minute Thesis competition , hosted by the J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Graduate School
Registration to compete is open through Friday, Oct. 25, to all degree-seeking graduate students at any Penn State campus.
Penn State community members, including graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, faculty and staff, are also invited to register as a judge by the Oct. 25 deadline for the event's first round.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is an academic research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. Each competitor has three minutes to speak and can use only one presentation slide to effectively explain their research to a general audience.
The competition will take place over two rounds. Judging for the opening round, which is a video format, will take place Nov. 4-8. The Fox Graduate School will be hosting the final round in partnership with the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) and the Fox Graduate School Alumni Society on Saturday, March 29, 2025, livestreamed from the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.
A small group of invited judges will evaluate the final round presentations and award first and second place. One competitor will also receive a People’s Choice award, sponsored by the GPSA, which will be decided based on in-person and online audience voting.
The Fox Graduate School will also be hosting an upcoming two-part online workshop series in collaboration with two faculty members, Marcy Milhomme , associate teaching professor for continuing education in communication arts and sciences, and Andy Gustafson , associate clinical professor of accounting, that is designed to prepare students for the 3MT competition and set graduate students up for success with future presentations. Sessions will take place Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 , followed by Oct. 8 and 15 .

2024 Three Minute Thesis competition application now open
Interested doctoral students must register by Oct. 1 to participate in this signature event
The application for the Three Minute Thesis competition is now open for interested doctoral students.
3MT is an academic competition that challenges students to summarize their thesis in three minutes for a general audience and a panel of judges, who rate their performance. The three winners of the competition, along with a people’s choice winner, receive prize money, with the first-place recipient receiving $1,500 and a chance to represent the university at the regional, national and international competitions.
To participate, you must be a CU Boulder doctoral student admitted to candidacy by December 1, 2024, and be enrolled for spring 2025 and expect to graduate in May 2025 or later. Graduates or alumni are not eligible. The deadline for registering is Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 11:59 p.m.
Application closes Oct. 1
“Amazing research happens every day by graduate students, but it often flies under the radar. The Three Minute Thesis competition is an opportunity to showcase that creative and innovative work and the talented students that make it happen,” Scott Adler, the dean of the Graduate School, said previously .
The 3MT event began in 2008 when the state of Queensland, Australia, suffered from a severe drought. To conserve water, residents were encouraged to time their showers, and many people had a three-minute egg timer fixed to the wall in their bathroom. The then-dean of the University of Queensland Graduate School, Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson, decided to apply the same approach with his students in a first of its kind competition.
It has since spread across the globe, including to CU Boulder.
Prior to CU Boulder’s competition, which takes place every February and is one of the Graduate School’s signature events, students participate in a series of workshops to improve their presentation and research communication skills, helping them to effectively (and succinctly) explain the significance of their research. These workshops also provide a chance for students to forge connections within a like-minded cohort from across the disciplines.
One such workshop or presentation scheduled for this year, among others discussing things like storytelling framework and improvisation techniques, is an exclusive talk by international 3MT winner, and Marvin H. Caruthers Endowed Chair for Early-Career Faculty Assistant Professor Samuel Ramsey on science communication. Watch Dr. Sammy’s winning 3MT presentation here .
For more information, including seeing the past winners, refer to the 3MT website . For all other questions, contact Hailey Herman at [email protected] .

Mart Wolbert: Uranium Bull Thesis Intact, "Half-time Break" Ending Soon
"Try as I might, I've not found a way to join the selloff right now, and I'm getting increasingly, increasingly bullish for what is still to come," said Mart Wolbert of Contrarian Codex.
Mart Wolbert, analyst at Contrarian Codex, shared his latest thoughts on the uranium market, including what's next for prices and key factors to watch when it comes to supply and demand.
When asked how far the current cycle has progressed, he said that in the context of his "stadium" model, a concept he explained in a previous interview , uranium's half-time break is almost over.
"That's not to say that we won't have any water breaks in between as the equities pull back and go up. That's just the nature of the market, it's the nature of any market. Nothing goes up in a straight line," Wolbert said.
"But I think that it's very important to look at it in the grand scheme of things. And that is: we have another half to go, and the second half is going to be in my opinion far more exciting than the first as this contracting cycle comes in."
He also discussed his key takeaways from the World Nuclear Symposium, highlighting how different sentiment is for retail investors versus companies and analysts involved in the uranium sector .
"It's absolutely incredible to see the discrepancy between that investor sentiment and just the sentiment of the mood in the room ... from the producers, from the people that are very closely associated with all things nuclear, from the analysts that are doing thousands upon thousands of hours of work — they were all enthusiastic," Wolbert explained.
He acknowledged the frustrating performance of the uranium equities, but said he remains bullish.
"The thesis — try as I might at the conference as well, I've tried to find a bear case, I've tried to really drag the thesis through the mud and try to find things where I could be wrong ... but try as I might, I've not found a way to join the selloff right now, and I'm getting increasingly, increasingly bullish for what is still to come," Wolbert concluded.
Watch the interview above for more of his thoughts on uranium supply, demand and prices.

A most informative interview. Very well done to you both. Having been in the nuclear energy business for well over 50 years I have witnessed the many ups and downs of the nuclear industry during that time. As Charlotte mentioned it is not an easy subject to explain to people and it is a world chock full of technical jargon that is daunting to the average investor. Mart does a wonderful job of making a complex investing subject understandable and his stadium analogy is a very thoughtful way of explaining what is going on. I think he is quite correct when he says there will be a parabolic rise in uranium prices but I do not think (this time) that it will be parabolic on the downside at least not for several years. My thoughts are that the price will stay much higher for much longer. The logic is that there are no Uranium mines of the capacity required to fill the gap coming on line for at least 4 years and when they do come on stream demand will have risen to consume the output of those mines. It is estimate that three to six new Arrow mines are required. We have only one. Also remember that the current big mines like Cigar and McArthur River have already consumed all of the easy to get at Uranium and in 4 years time will have only 5 or 6 years of mine life left. There is nothing to replace them. Mart mentioned the impact of SMR's which in my view has been entirely underestimated. They will have a very large impact on this current market cycle. The reason is that the construction timeline is short. A big nuclear plant takes 10 to 15 years to build and fuel is only ordered in the last part of the construction period. It takes about 2 years to make the fuel so it is ordered about three years before fueling is scheduled. SMR's on the other hand take 4 years to build but the fuel still takes 2 years to make. Essentially that means SMR fuel must be ordered almost as soon as construction starts so that it is available for the first fuel loading. OPG is building 4 such SMR's at Darlington Site in Ontario Canada and has ordered fuel for them this year. Now consider that there are hundreds of new SMR orders waiting in the wings. As soon as they are ordered the fuel for them also has to be ordered and that will have a dramatic impact on all aspects of the fuel cycle from U3O8 supply to Conversion to Enrichment since all SMR designs use enriched fuel. U3O8 prices will rise parabolically and stay there for several years while supply catches up to demand. Charlotte made the point that what happens when there is not enough Uranium to supply the demand? A very astute question and I think one that deserves an honest answer. What will happen is that some reactors will be forced to shutdown or take extended maintenance outages. That is how dire the Uranium supply situation really is. There is both a financial price to pay and an operating price to pay for chronic underinvestment in an essential commodity. I think we are about to see the playing out of that scenario in the next few years. A really great interview and well worth watching. My sincere thanks to you both.
