ABSTRACT The social change occurring worldwide due to a range of causes had substantial effects on expectations regarding the industries serving in the field of tourism. Tourism ranks among the top fields affected by such changing social expectations. The efforts on part of the employers in this line of business to meet the changing and/or transforming expectations through architectural products lead to development of touristic architecture with a form based on popular assumptions, regardless of the characteristics of the users involved. In this context, architecture involved in an industry focused on consumption evolves into an object of consumption, so to speak. Contemporary hotel buildings arbitrarily employ architectural elements associated with irrelevant cultures transposed from the past and addressing passing tastes of the users in line with the “fashion” in tourism. This attitude does not seek any theoretical, architectural, artistic or functional quality at all on the conceptual level, and it appears before us as exact copies/replicas of specific architectural forms and elements. Indeed, a quick peek into the backyard of a hotel building that is accessed through Ottoman porticos could lead to a walk on Chinese bridges, culminating in a stay in the highest tower of another section designed to look like a chateau. Architecture as a product for marketing is used and abused to create an environment of hyper reality, bringing about a confused memory on part of its physical and visual users. The most degenerate examples of this state of affairs appears in the form of architectural works virtually “transposed” from their original geographies. Called replicas, these structures appear all around the globe. Imported from a range of cultures, symbols such as the Egyptian Pyramids, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty are rendered objects of consumption, severed from their historical, temporal and local context, being offered as a transposed copy instead. This study discusses the “replica” buildings developed in the tourism industry operating in various regions of Turkey in the context of “replacing architecture”. The discussions are conducted through these original buildings as well as their replicas. The cases that are focused on include the Asteria Kremlin Palace, Venezia Palace, Mardan Palace Hotel, Orange County Deluxe and Topkapı Palace. With reference to the cases, such severing of the iconic symbols of global popularity from their original context caused by the virtual “administration” on “any” given holiday destination not only is derogatory for the replica, but also sheds away the value of the original as well as displacing it. In conclusion, a call is made for opening the debate on imitation in architecture once again, which renders the original structures just “worthless” objects through the “consumption”-focused attitude on part of the tourism industry. In this context, the ultimate goal is to underline once again the importance given by architecture to the concepts of “place”, “space”, “context”, “memory” and “identity”. The Role of Cultural Institutions and Events in the Marketing of Cities and Regions

The city is a cultural phenomenon in its own right and tells its past, transfers together its memory. Historic buildings are the physical manifestation of memory that makes places significant. The city contains visions of previous generations side by side with an urban and cultural life in a state of constant change and urban development must be combined with the protection of cultural heritage. Preserving cultural and natural heritage , to bring it within reach of all, making cultures and civilizations better known, improving daily living conditions and reducing poverty is what gives meaning to the sustainability of tourism development. Tourism must remain a tool and in no wise a goal in itself, it must be developed with a view to sustainability. This paper addresses the livability and functionality of historic city centers, under the conditions of global change analyzing the influence of tourism development in terms of commercial activities, advertisement and traffic signage in the appearance of historical streetscapes. In many cases, the commercial city center coincides with the historic core, and the challenge of the local authority is to combine commercial activities with the preservation of traditional and historic buildings and public spaces. As part of the historic context of many countries, historic city centers have been through a process of metamorphoses, which involves the satisfaction of new social and commercial needs. This transformation usually involves updating the infrastructure and the historic buildings to accommodate commercial activities, and the insertion of contemporary architecture in existing streetscapes. This is a common process and there is nothing wrong with that; problems begin when historic buildings and places are harmed by this global change. This paper draws on three empirical case studies (Ajman, Sharjah and Dubai) to examine questions tourism development with the introduction of some commercial activities, signage control, and their repercussions on the preservation of historic heritage in terms of build environment considered as regionalist production, and user preference and satisfaction with historic city centers. The objective is to inform those factors that need to be taken into account in the use of the tourism development as a source for the revitalization of the historical and archeological sites. The approach to achieve the objectives is based on two methodologies: • Deductive: A theoretical investigation based on the properties of the historic city center structure, definitions, principles of design, and the dilemma of achieving planning and preservation as much cultural tourism for the tourism development as technical for the physical preservation of the traditional environment. This combines information from literature reviews and the ideas of key figures in the urban conservation field and the place-identity, social identity and identity process as theories for cultural models of the city. • Inductive: The case studies as examples of historical settlements that have undergone much change processes. The study looks to elicit the images of the historical center to support the theoretical propositions of surface and deep structural city elements. The conclusion to this part is based on an analysis of the case study. The research concludes that heritage is a constituent of the cultural tradition, and an important part of societal and community well-being. This comprehensive vision merges both tangible and intangible dimensions; architectural and historical values. There are several ways of defining the importance of preserving heritage.

dc.description.abstract	If the analysis of an architectural design problem suggests the use of references and historical precedents, how should these be selected? Once selected, how can similarities or contradictions between the references and the problem at hand be evaluated? Simply put, how can a body of references be assembled and then made part of the design process? As a concept, type provides a part of the answer to these questions. Since there is no consensus on the meaning and viability of this idea within a design process, the first part of this study is a discussion intended to define and clarify the term. The second part of the study is a design exploration that takes up some of the issues raised in this discussion. Since the project is a convention center, a form of building for which no precedents are widely agreed upon, the question of how to conceptualize a new building type is posed. One of the oldest institutional building types, the monastery, is assessed as a possible prototype. The assumption is not that the Cistercian monastery was a convention center all along, but that the basic morphology of its plan suggests planning principles with a wider institutional application. This hypothesis is tested by using these principles to evaluate the plans of several twentieth-century buildings.	en_US

No, registration and admission is free. For your convenience, it is recommended that you pre-register online in advance of the show.

What is the benefit of registering in advance for free?

Pre-registered attendees will gain quicker entrance into the show with limited wait time. You will also receive access to online planning tools, as well as last-minute show updates and announcements.

Can I bring sample parts, blueprints, and drawings?

Yes, many of our attendees bring actual parts or plans for the exhibitors to quote on. D2P shows are working shows and the exhibitors welcome the opportunity to get down to business.

Yes we encourage students to visit the show as they are future manufacturing professionals. Because this is an active business engagement, we ask that students and instructors follow some attendance guidelines.

1. Please attend the show after 11:00 am so the floor is less congested, and exhibitors have an opportunity to conduct business.

2. Please email our registration manager ( [email protected] ) letting them know the size of your group that plans on attending.

Is “selling” to exhibitors, or passing out company literature allowed on the show floor?

We have a strict “no solicitation policy” at all our shows. This includes:

1. Direct conversation with exhibitors or attendees soliciting them for business.

2. Passing out of company literature or promotions of any kind.

Any attendee reported to the show office for soliciting will be asked to leave. Sales professionals looking for outsourcing partners or evaluating the show as a future exhibitor are more than welcome to attend the show.
