Write at least 250 words.
Model Answer:
The rise in obesity has been significant amongst the youth all over the world particularly in the UK, United States and Australia, While some people consider this to be the result of poor self control, I feel the causes are linked to lifestyle that people lead in the western society. If this issue is not tackled there will be many detrimental effects on healthcare systems in these countries.
There are many causes of rapid growth in childhood obesity in the western world. Firstly, there are many powerful companies behind the advertising of high calorie snacks and foods. These companies drive strong promotional campaigns, inducing the youth to purchase these foods. An example of this is McDonald's, McDonald's entices the youth by various ways, such as sponsoring sports, creating "Happy Meals" containing toys and, creating play areas in their restaurants. As a results, young children may ask their parents to take them to McDonald's.
Another reason for the increased consumption of high calorie foods is the fast pace of life in these more economically developed countries. Many parents work long hours; as a result they have little time to cook nutritious meals for their children. Thus, fast food outlets have become quick and easy alternative to cooking.
The effects of growing of phenomenon obesity in the youth include a number of health problems. Heart disease, diabetes and strokes can all be linked to high body mass index. If a society has a greater incidence of diseases, this will take a ton on the health system and ultimately decrease the life expectancy of people and the quality of life that they lead.
In summary, if the obesity epidemic is not tackled at the grassroot level, we will become a population with many morbidities. It may be the end of the western world as we know it.

It is undeniable that obesity among children is becoming increasingly prevalent in many nations, posing a significant challenge to the overall well-being of young people. This essay will first explore how inadequate dietary practices and sedentary lifestyles contribute to this issue and then propose solutions focused on the roles of schools and government.
The rise of obesity in children can be attributed to two main reasons, namely a poorly planned diet and a habitually inactive lifestyle. To begin with, children are increasingly consuming high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, such as fast food, sugary drinks, and processed snacks. These products are often more accessible and appealing compared to healthier options, leading to excessive calorie intake and subsequent weight gain. Additionally, a sedentary lifestyle has been prevalent among children since the introduction of digital technology. Given the addictive nature of modern devices, children tend to spend an excessive amount of time on their gadgets, which not only limits calories burned but also promotes unhealthy eating habits, as children often snack mindlessly while engaged in screen time.
Addressing childhood obesity requires a multifaceted approach involving both schools and government actions. Firstly, schools should incorporate comprehensive nutrition education into their curriculum to teach children about the importance of a balanced diet and the risks associated with junk food. For instance, elementary schools might introduce a health class where students learn how to create balanced meal plans and understand the role of various nutrients in maintaining good health. Furthermore, government support is crucial in tackling childhood obesity. By investing in and maintaining recreational facilities such as parks, sports amenities, and playgrounds, governments can provide children with opportunities to engage in regular physical activity.
In conclusion, childhood obesity is primarily caused by an unhealthy diet and an inactive lifestyle. However, both schools and governments can play a crucial role in mitigating this issue by promoting healthier lifestyles and providing resources for physical activity.

Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
With the advent of urbanisation and the rise in popularity of fast food, there have been accompanying issues with rising obesity rates – especially in developed countries like England and the USA. After providing a careful analysis of why obesity has risen so sharply in these countries, I shall suggest a number of ways in which the obesity epidemic can be ameliorated.
To begin with, it should be unsurprising that fast food is incredibly popular in wealthy countries (like England and the USA). Due to the high levels of development in these countries, consumers possess more money and can therefore consume vast amounts of fast food without seriously diminishing their income.
For example, the American Dietary Association found that (compared to the average Indian household), the average American household has a six times larger budget for food per month. Consequently, it is to be expected that obesity rates are much higher in countries with larger amounts of wealth.
However, despite the severity of the obesity problem, there are a number of ways in which developed countries could battle it more effectively. Firstly, developed governments could put far more pressure on fast food outlets to provide healthy alternatives to hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks.
Secondly, public exercise initiatives could be advertised and promoted far more vigorously. Lastly, modules that inform teenagers about healthy dietary requirements could be taught at schools.
In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, if the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years .

Essay topic
In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?
Band 8 essay sample
It is a fact that in some countries, the average weight of the citizens is shooting up while their fitness and health conditions are worsening. In my view this is mainly because of the food habits and modern lifestyle they follow. In this essay, I will examine these two factors and then propose a viable solution.
One of the foremost reasons for obesity is the consumption of unhealthy foods. Many people started to follow western food habits and eventually ended up eating high fat content foods like pizza and burger. Regular consumption of these fat rich foods will increase a person’s weight in a short span of time.
In addition to that, now-a-days, more and more people are living a sedentary lifestyle. They do not dedicate any time to do any kind of physical activity. As a result, they lose their resistance power. If this lifestyle continues then people will fall ill more frequently and lose their health permanently.
It is necessary that the government takes steps to open many sports complexes and fitness studios near residential communities. Most of the people who do not want to travel far to go to a sports center will be ready to use one if it is available nearby. In a study conducted by a popular newspaper 90% of the respondents said that they are willing to use the gym or any physical activity centers if they are within 3 kilometer radius.
To conclude, encouraging people to do more physical activities will not only improve their fitness and overall health but also help people to shed their weight.

The issue of obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent , leading some to propose that raising the prices of fattening foods could be an effective solution. While this approach has some merit, I believe it is only partially effective and could have unintended consequences.
On the one hand, increasing the price of unhealthy, fattening foods can help solve the problem of obesity to some extent. One benefit of this practice is that it might encourage individuals, especially those who are obese, to reconsider their dietary choices. When unhealthy food items become more expensive, people may be more likely to choose healthier alternatives that are more reasonably priced. For instance, if the cost of sugary drinks like soda or alcohol rises significantly, consumers might opt for healthier options such as water or fruit juice, which are generally cheaper. Additionally, imposing higher production taxes on fattening foods could lead companies to either reduce or stop producing such items. Fearing loss of profit or even bankruptcy , businesses might shift towards manufacturing healthier products, thus reducing the availability of unhealthy food options in the market.
However, opponents of this strategy including me would argue that it has more drawbacks than benefits. For one, altering the food market in such a manner could disrupt consumer habits, leading to dissatisfaction among customers. Businesses that are customer-centered may hesitate to change their product lines drastically , fearing a loss of their consumer base. Moreover, increasing the prices of fattening foods could disproportionately affect people with limited economic means. As food companies pivot towards producing healthier items, the prices of these products might rise as well, making it difficult for low-income individuals to afford them. This could create a situation where healthier options become a luxury , accessible only to those with higher incomes, while those with less financial flexibility continue to consume unhealthy, but now more expensive, food.
In conclusion, while raising the prices of fattening foods could encourage some people to make healthier choices and potentially lead companies to produce healthier products, it is not a comprehensive solution. A more balanced approach, perhaps combining price adjustments with education and accessibility to healthy foods, would likely be more effective in addressing the growing problem of obesity.
