book review of life without limits

Born without arms or legs, Nick Vujicic overcame his disabilities to live an independent, rich, fulfilling, and “ridiculously good” life while serving as a role model for anyone seeking true happiness. Now an internationally successful motivational speaker, Nick eagerly spreads his central message: the most important goal is to find your life’s purpose and to never give up, despite whatever difficulties or seemingly impossible odds stand in your way.

Nick tells the story of his physical disabilities and the emotional battle he endured while learning to deal with them as a child, teen, and young adult. “For the longest, loneliest time, I wondered if there was anyone on earth like me, and whether there was any purpose to my life other than pain and humiliation.” Nick shares how his faith in God has been his major source of strength, and he explains that once he found a sense of purpose --- inspiring others to better their lives and the world around them --- he found the confidence to build a rewarding and productive life without limits. Let Nick inspire you to start living your own life without limits.   Includes a LIFE WITHOUT LIMITS Personal Action Plan to help anyone determine their unique path to a successful life.

Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life… A Review

“Living without limits means knowing that you always have something to give, something that might ease the burden of others.” Nick Vujicic

book review of life without limits

Life Without Limits... Nick Vujicic

A Review: Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life by Nick Vujicic What limits do we place on our lives? How can we live a life without limits; a purposeful life? Recently, I read a book that was so compelling, I couldn’t put it down. It was the personal journey of Nick Vujicic, a motivational speaker and inspiring author of “Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life,” born without limbs; a condition known as Tetra-amelia , and his struggles to overcome his limitations and build a purposeful life.

Nick, the eldest child of a deeply religious, Serbian family, was born in Brisbane, Australia in 1982. His parents found out in the delivery room that their new baby had no arms or legs except for two toes on a partially formed foot. His parents were inconsolable when they found out about their baby’s condition but soon turned to their Christian faith for solace, and then made a commitment to love their son unconditionally and raise him as best they could. At one point, they even moved to the USA to help Nick get access to better prosthesis and medical care, but returned to Australia when conditions didn’t improve.

“ Motivation gets you through the day, but inspiration lasts a lifetime.” Nick Vujicic

Nick spent his early years struggling to make meaning of his life; he was bullied and picked on, felt limited by his disability and, at one point, at age 10, even considered suicide. However, through perseverance, faith in God , the loving support of his family and a series of fortuitous events, Nick turned his life around once he realized that pushing past insecurities about his physical limitations would give him the impetus to create a purposeful life: “At first I was not willing to confront that what was really wrong with me wasn’t my body, it was the limits I put on myself and my limited vision of the possibilities for my life.”

Accepting his divine destiny and the endless possibilities that he now enjoys did not come easy, however, there were signs and help along the way. There were several pivotal moments and stories shared in this book that helped Nick embrace his life and focus on achieving his dreams. At 13, he read a newspaper report about a man who was fully paralyzed and bedridden. The story made Nick recognize that he had possibilities and could do more with his life. An exchange on stage with a young girl, at a talk he gave for 300 teenagers, changed his perspective and helped him to stop questioning his self-worth.

“ I do believe my life has no limits! I want you to feel the same way about your life, no matter what your challenges may be.” Nick Vujicic

LOOK AT YOURSELF AFTER WATCHING THIS Video

When Reggie Dabbs, an American motivational speaker, shared his own inspirational story at a High School assembly, Nick was impressed and imagined himself doing same. Mr. Arnold, the school janitor and Christian youth leader, prodded Nick for three months to give his first speech and when he finally gave one, everyone applauded his effort. Not long after, Nick started receiving invitations to give more speeches. By 17, he started his nonprofit company; Life Without Limbs , and embarked on a life of inspired Christian service to others and motivational speaking engagements.

Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life is filled with stories and uplifting messages of the power of faith and the importance of believing in our purpose and destiny. Each chapter addresses an important attribute that helped Nick on the road to building a life without limits. Nick doesn’t gloss over the heart-wrenching pain and challenges he experienced in his childhood, however, he balances them with events and lessons that gave him hope and strengthened his faith. The inspirational anecdotal stories shared in the book are helpful and engaging; affirming Nick’s generous spirit and determined personality.

For anyone who might be feeling unworthy and limited, this book will uplift and inspire you to have faith and follow your dreams.  Life Without Limits: Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life is full of fantastic nuggets of wisdom and a few that stood out are: “If you have the desire and passion to do something, and it’s within God’s will, you will achieve it.” and “When you step outside of yourself and your own concerns to reach out for others, it will change you. You will be humbled. You will be inspired.”

Today, Nick speaks around the world and runs his companies, Attitude is Altitude and Life Without Limbs.Org . This is a highly recommended, inspirational book to read. What are your thoughts? What limits do you place on your life? What are you willing to do to help you change? Do share. . Thank You! 🙂

***FTC disclaimer: I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review and it had no bearing on my positive review. Positive Motivation Tip: The only limitations in our lives are the ones we hold in our minds. Release them and meet your destiny.

I just finished watching the interview with Mr. Vujicic that Hakea posted on her blog – we’re blog buddies. His comment about being who we are and finding our purpose (I’m paraphrasing) has special resonance for me right now. I’m also looking at the limits, the box I’ve put myself in. Powerful stuff, eh?

Thanks for posting this review of his book. Marcia http://insidejourneys.com

Thank you for stopping by my blog… I agree. His message resonated with me too. I believe we all have a purpose in life and while our purpose might vary and all are not mega front stage stuff, it is still ours to claim. TY! 🙂

I love Nick! I featured him last May with another terrific video filled with humor, warmth, and love: nrhatch.wordpress.com/2010/05/20/

Oh TY and how wonderful!!! I will check out yours and read it. Until this year, I had not heard of Nick. It was a joy to review the book…. an inspired and easy read. 🙂

Certainly an inspirational man. I recall attending a motivational speech my a similar person many years ago. I can’t recall his name, but also an Australian. He had no legs, but built a signwriting company, and later other ventures.

Would it be Tony Christiansen? He’s a Kiwi, but we’ve been known to claim them as our own (Russell Crowe, Sam Neill). hehehe

I honestly do not remember, Hakea. It is MANY years ago (I’m old). He may have been a Kiwi. Don’t think we ever claimed Sam, did we? Besides, I’m an ex-pat Hakea – born in Greymouth.

I have no idea, but Nick mentioned Christy Brown and that is why I brought that name up too. Thanks again Hakea for the video, post, and comments. 🙂

Perhaps it is the same man? Or Christy Brown? I was very touched by Nick’ story too… TY for stopping in. 🙂

Christy Brown was an Irish poet and artist who had severe cerebral palsy. His story was featured in the film My Left Foot (Daniel Day Lewis, Brenda Fricker).

Oops! Yes, I did see the movie – My Left Foot – with Daniel Day Lewis years ago and, after posting my comments, I realized the person both of you were speaking of is not Christy! 😉

Definitely inspirational… I enjoyed the book. 🙂

You did an excellent job with this review and I loved the video’s thanks so much! ♥

TY Jackie, I loved yours too. It was excellent. 🙂

Thank you so much AngelBaby… I love your name. Nick is truly amazing and talk about perspective… Wow! We have no excuse for not appreciating life once we read his story. 🙂

I love this video, its an amazing story about how one can overcome any obstacle along this journey of life we are struggling to survive. (Some a little more then others, but we all face our giants in our daily walk. These days, my mind is constantly on my brother, he has been diagnosis with ca. I went to see him over the weekend, it was so shocking, but it gave me some reality to the whole situation. I am at lost for words regarding this situation, but please keep in your prayers. He is embracing life and the courage to fight his odds. Nice post !

Oh Penny, I am so sorry and sad to read about your brother… Please know that he is in my prayers too and with God’s grace and help coupled with great medical care, many forms are treatable these days. I feel for you and understand this all too well. Sending you hugs and him healing light and love… Be blessed, Eliz

[Review] Life Without Limits

life without limits

Nick Vujicic  is a man on a global mission. And boy is he creating waves wherever he goes.  At the tender age of 31, Nick is a motivational guru, evangelist, and author of several bestselling books. A celebrated speaker, he gets invitations to speak from all over the world – Australia (Melbourne was his childhood home), Europe, US, China, India, Africa, and South East Asia (including  Singapore ).  He is also an avid swimmer, surfer, sky diver, and actor. The most amazing thing, however, is that he accomplishes all of this despite being born without limbs. Afflicted with the ultra rare  tetra-amelia syndrome , Nick overcame severe disability and depression (he once harbored suicidal thoughts) to become a living testimony to many. As a committed Christian and a minister, Nick has also spread God’s message of love and hope to many, and brought light in a world full of darkness.

Subtitled  Inspiration for a Ridiculously Good Life , Vujicic’s bestselling book “ Life Without Limits ” is part autobiography part motivational book. Chronicling various episodes of his life – childhood, teenage, to adulthood – the book’s inspiring chapters weaves personal heartfelt stories with valuable life lessons. They cover topics like purpose, hope, faith, self-acceptance, attitude, courage, managing change, relationships, failure, opportunity seeking, risk and giving.

book review of life without limits

With a wickedly disarming sense of self-deprecating humor (pun un-intended), Nick candidly revealed how his physical handicap compelled him to be bold and to speak confidently to adults and other kids when he was young. Because of his uniqueness, he is able to touch the lives of many who are drawn to his universal messages of living beyond life’s limits.

Most of Nick’s life lessons are simple to understand but difficult to master. They cover universal themes like persevering over immense odds, being optimistic in all situations, overcoming change in one’s life, and displaying empathy in whatever one does.

Let me share some of the “quotable quotes” from his bestselling book: On Self-Acceptance  – “Instead of dwelling on your imperfections, your failings, or your mistakes, focus on your blessings, and the contributions you can make, whether it’s a talent, knowledge, wisdom, creativity, hard work, or nurturing a soul.” On Attitude  – “You and I may have absolutely no control over what happens to us, but we can control how we respond. If we choose the right attitude, we can rise above whatever challenges we face… Optimism is empowering – it gives you control over your emotions. Pessimism weakens your will and allows your moods to control your actions.” On Opportunity  – “To pursue your dreams you have to take action. Move it or lose it. Act or be acted upon. If you don’t have what you want, consider creating what you want.” In my opinion, the most moving story was the one where Nick worked with his parents and siblings to device innovative contraptions to allow him to live a more independent life. It is staggering how tasks as simple as taking a shower, visiting the toilet, brushing teeth, and changing clothes can be such a challenge for somebody like Nick. My heart also leaped with joy when I read how he managed to achieve mobility via a motorised wheelchair which he can operate with his left foot (affectionately named as his “chicken drumstick”). The greatest takeaway for me was the lesson on giving. Nick actually praised God when he learned that 150,000 copies of his DVDs were illegally made and sold in Indonesia. This was because he cared more about people hearing his message than about making profits. I was also touched by how he gave away $20,000 of his meagre savings when he made a mission trip to South Africa, and provided orphanages with presents for kids, books, blankets and beds despite having very little then. “ Life Without Limits ” is highly recommended for anybody seeking to find meaning, purpose and hope in their lives. While not all of us could lead “ridiculously good” lives like Nick Vujicic, there are invaluable lessons in the book which we can draw from. Ultimately, the most important thing in life is to have faith and trust in God, our loved ones and ourselves wherever we may be.

Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic (Book Review)

After listening to one of the best motivational speaker( in my opinion and also by the number of audiences that are brought to tears) , I’ve decided to go on an online hunt for his motivational books, videos or quotes. The 90 minutes session where I’ve got to see Nick Vujicic speaks live is just life-transforming and left me asking for more.( Check Out My Previous Post On  What I’ve Learned From The Life Story Of Nick Vujicic Here ).

A brief look into the contents gave you beautifully crafted titles for the chapters such as

  • If You Cant Get A Miracle, Become One
  • No Arms, No Legs, No Limits
  • Full Assurance In The Heart
  •  ….. and more…..

I like the way the chapters is organized to reflect certain aspect and obstacles in Nick Vujicic’s life. And in this book, there’s this Personal Action Plan , which has a list of assignment for readers after completing of each chapter. It provides a form of self-reflection and taking massive ACTION after getting all inspired from reading the book. After all, what’s great about Nick Vujicic is that he is a man who walks his talk .

Good Feedback On Life Without Limits By Nick Vujicic

Nick Vujicic is a very good speaker, there’s no doubt on that. The fact that he could bring joy, laughter, and tears, not once but several times in a 90 minutes session is a good testament of that. But I was curious about how good his book will be.

I have always been a fan of motivational speakers. I’ve listened to quite a few online and have read some of their books. But what made Nick Vujicic stands out from the rest is that he does not place himself above his audience.

Instead, his humble admission that there are times when he cried and felt negative made him very much human just like us . And the fact that he could overcome all those and lift himself up, again and again, and inspire others is what made him a bigger man than most of us .

If You Can’t Get A Miracle, Become One

This is one of the phrases that Nick Vujicic emphasized when I attended his talk. It’s amazing how a person with such circumstances chose to live beyond the limits. And this is the same phrase that inspired other readers through his book. Here’s a 5-Star review on GoodReads in late 2015.

Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic

Most motivational speakers would use analogies and examples, to get their point across. Nick Vujicic is different in that sense. His life is an inspiration by itself.

Life Without Limits does come in an Audible format, but I DO NOT recommend you on getting the Audible version. There’s actually a sample audio preview of the Audible version on Amazon. I’ve listened to it and it is nothing like Nick speaking in live sessions. It is more of him reading or narrating his book which I felt boring. Maybe that’s because of my personal expectation since I’ve had the privilege of hearing him speak before.

My Suggestion on Life Without Limits

As of writing, I have only read a few pages of  Life Without Limits. It was clearly written and easy to read. This is one book that you should consider reading if :

  • You ever wonder how a man who seems broken on the outside, is more than complete on the inside?
  • You question why all the bad circumstances are happening in your life?
  • You are greatly inspired by Nick Vujicic.
  • You lost motivation in your life and wonder if all hopes are lost.
  • Like me, you want to remove limits to your life.

It doesn’t matter your belief and religion, what Nick Vujicic has done transcended that. Hope, gratitude, courage, and love go beyond the border of races and religion. It is the essence of humanity itself.

Great review. I had never heard of Nick Vujicic before. I watched the video and was amazed at this man’s courage and determination. My father lost a limb, late in life, not like Nick – but still, it is incredible how people seem to see the missing limbs rather than the person inside. I’m looking forward to reading the book, and seeing how Nick dealt with it.

I’m sorry to heard about your father. Yet I have tremendous respect on how people like your father and Nick deal with the circumstances. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they see the light within them and bring hope and love to others.

Thanks for your feedback.

Hi Kenny, I once belonged to a business organization which, to put it delicately I regret getting involved with. The only positive thing about my membership which lasted about one year was that they had a wonderful summit/motivational seminar out in Hawaii on the Big Island in the fall of 2006. (Yes we each had to pay for the trip ourselves).

I will always remember one of the motivational speakers being Dick Hoyt at this Hawaiian seminar held near Kona. Hoyt is famous for his speaking engagements for years now, plus the fact that as his son was born with disabilities the two competed in marathons – Dick pushing his son in a wheelchair while running. Hoyt is now in his mid 70s age wise and still competes!

What this man said at that motivational seminar about never giving up regarding anything having to do with your goals and dreams, plus the life that he dedicated towards helping his son brought many of us to tears.

I can only imagine that the individual who you reviewed in your article, Nick Vujicic obviously has the same abilities to inspire people. The # of individuals who issued such high reviews of his book speaks for itself. For a fact so many of us throughout the world face issues throughout life. Often needing a way to find inspiration, it is the great speakers who through their words can allow people to view both the world and their lives more positively.

Not a big thing but both the link to the book itself as well as the video you inserted at the bottom of your article each returned non-active pages.

Still a very informative review, Kenny! Jeff

First I’m not sure why are the links not working on your side. Apologise for that.

And yet thank you for sharing your beautiful story with us. I must say I’ve never heard of Dick Hoyt but from your words he seems like another great motivational speaker himself.

It’s amazing to see how these people not only overcome adversities in their life but continues to inspire others to do the same.

Thanks for reading.

Dear Kenny,

Thank you for this helpful post. I never heard of Nick Vujicic, but I can tell he has a strong spirit, despite what he’s been through. I know that everyone reaches a low point in their lives. As a college student, I’ve hit plenty and I know there’s still more to come. I hope to remain strong and grateful by reading motivational books. They are invaluable. I know I will be inspired if I read Nick’s book, thanks to your post!

I hope you would overcome every single challenges in your life, just as Nick Vujicic as done. He is one great Australian motivational speaker now residing in California. I’ve heard his talk, it’s inspiring. Thanks for the feedback.

First of all, I want to say this is a really good review. It’s easy to read and connect to. I’ve never heard of Nick Vujicic but he sounds like a truly inspiring individual. I like the amazon review and the fact that you also went out of your way to give your own personal review of what others were saying about his book. I would definitely consider reading this book in the near future!

I guess there are many more people who have not heard of him before. But if you are a fan of motivational speakers, he is one of the best I’ve ever met.

' src=

I do take inspiration from motivational speakers, but when it is from a person such as Nick Vujicic, who lives with his disabilities in such an incredible way, it gives us something more. He is living proof of the human spirit overcoming enormous adversity, we cannot help but be moved by his courage. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I agree with you. After seeing him in person and hearing him speak. And a few pages book, I still can’t comprehend how did he find such hope and courage. He is truly and inspiring person.

Great review man!! I love Nick. He is such an inspiration!! He proves that no matter your circumstances you CAN overcome and be all that you want to be in life!! Anything he puts out is worth the time and money to buy and read.

Thanks for the read. He is definitely one person that you can’t argue for not living the talk. A living inspiration himself.

Nick Vujicic – Your Life Without Limits Book Review

book review of life without limits

I decided to pick up the book titled Your Life Without Limits by Nick Vujic at the Atlanta airport awaiting my next flight during a long layover.  I was in search of a book to read and immediately noticed Nick Vujicic's face after watching some inspirational videos of him on YouTube.  It's a small book that only consists of about 50-60 pages, but I was excited to see what I could learn from this inspirational man with no arms or legs.

[leadplayer_vid id=”5109EE1F893D2″] (Click here to watch the video on YouTube) What inspires me most about Nick is that despite the adversity he's faced in his life, being born with no limbs, he is not constrained by his circumstances.  He shares his story and what he experienced growing up feeling like an outcast and being suicidal.  Nick had been through some dark times, wondering if he'd ever find a woman that would love him and was frustrated by not being able to do what others could.  He felt often like he was a burden to others, and even began questioning his faith in God.

If God will not take away my pain, and if there is no purpose for me in this life… if I'm here only to experience rejection and loneliness… and I'm a burden to everyone and I have no future… I should just end it now.

I had a tear in my eye as I read about how Nick was planning his suicide.  At times in his life, he had given up and was ready to check out.  It wasn't until he discovered some hope and learned to accept his life was the way it is, and found an empowering meaning, that allowed him to find a purpose and live a happy life.

Life may not be going well for you now, but as long as you are here, as long as you press forward, anything is possible.

Nick Vujicic

Nick Vujicic's message is simple: Keep your hope alive and to never give up on your dreams.

He demonstrates the power of hope and never giving up in his inspirational story and how today he has been able to travel the world and experience a life most people never will.  Despite his condition, he hasn't allowed it to stop him in any way from living life to the limit.  There's so many people that have arms or legs and luxuries that he doesn't have, yet are miserable and depressed.  It goes to show that happiness and fulfillment is a state of mind, it has nothing to do with your outer world.  You have control over it.

Often the challenges we think are holding us back are, in fact, making us stronger.  You should be open to the possibility that today's handicap might be tomorrow's advantage.

I enjoyed this little book.  It really inspired me and really put my life in perspective.  It's so easy to take things for granted, and reading about Nick's story has really made me feel more gratitude for what I do have and to appreciate the gifts that my creator has given me.  If you're going through a challenge in your life or are feeling down, this book will definitely uplift you.  Click here to check out Your Life Without Limits by Nick Vujicic on Amazon.

E*Trade Solo 401(k) Review: Pros and Cons

For better or  for  worse, we have found ourselves in a world in which it is nearly impossible to live a comfortable or fulfilling life after retirement without  a  significant  amount of  savings.  You have to earn the right to enjoy your twilight years , otherwise , you will need to work until your final  hours,  or rely on your family to support you despite your contribution to society.

Therefore, the pressure to create a 401(k) account and contribute  to it  regularly is real and intense. While most retirement plans  are tied  to your place of employment, you always have the option to set up a  solo,  or  individual,  retirement account.  This  is the only real option for those who are  self-employed,  or work somewhere that does not offer a pension or retirement plan  of its own . These are called solo 401(k) plans.

If you have been looking into creating your  own  solo (or individual) retirement account,  it can become overwhelming comparing all the different  options available to you. We looked into E*Trade’s individual  retirement options so you can see  exactly  what you’re  getting,  and how it compares to other options.

Why Are We Talking About This?

Usually, the decision of where to invest your 401(k)  is made  by your employer. Hopefully, it includes some amount of employer match or other benefits. Though, for  a variety of  reasons, many people do not have access to employer-sponsored retirement plans.  This  can be because an employer doesn’t want to set one up or  because  you are self-employed.

In these  cases,  and many others, the responsibility of deciding who  is going to manage your retirement fund falls to you. To help with this chore, we looked into E*Trade’s 401(k) options. You can also learn more in our full E*Trade review here.

Background on Solo 401(K) Plans

The term "401(k)" is only used in the United States to refer to retirement pension plans. Other countries have begun to adopt the term due to its popularity, but its name stems from the section in the U.S. Tax Code that deals with retirement pension plans. Beginning in the 70's, company-provided retirement pensions began to take off in order to buy the long-term loyalty of employees. Typically, self-employed people were left out, so the Solo 401(k) was created.

In 2001, the United States government passed the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act, making 401(k) plans more beneficial and accessible to self-employed people.  This  essentially raised the limit on  the amount  an individual could contribute to their plan  every year . Now, some people prefer to have a Solo 401(k) plan over a typical pension plan for these reasons.

Solo 401(k) accounts function essentially identically to employer-sponsored plans. The rules for contribution limits, withdrawals, rollovers, and other ways to manage your retirement savings are the same. Retirement accounts are heavily regulated in the United States  so  the amount of customization remains limited within and between different accounts and companies.

The primary difference between the plans is that you will not have any employer-matched contributions (since you are your own employer, any contributions are employer-matched, though some savvy tax preparers can help find some ways to minimize your company tax burden), and any plan changes will have to be made by you instead of your company representative.

E*Trade’s Individual 401(k) Options

E*Trade calls its solo 401(k) plan options Individual 401(k)s, and there are a few things to  keep in mind  before trying to sign up for one.

These plans are only for self-employed individuals who employ no  other people  other than their spouse. If you  employ  any number of employees at your business, you  will need to  sign up for  a full  employer-sponsored 401(k) plan. If you are self-employed in your own business and have a full-time job  at the same time , you can have both an employer-sponsored account and your own solo 401(k)  but  the contribution limits apply to both, so you can’t double your contributions just because you have two accounts.

It is important to remember that a solo 401(k) is different from an IRA. On the E*Trade website,  you will be guided  to complete its Small Business Questionnaire to help you pick which retirement plan is best for you and your small company. If your business only includes you and your spouse, you  will be able to   pick  from the Individual 401(k), an SEP IRA, or a Simple IRA. We strongly encourage you to research the details of all three options before selecting any  of them   as  switching accounts can incur fees and a lot of valuable time.

If you end up hiring employees at your self-employed business, you  are required to  add them to any employer-sponsored plan.  Since this plan is for self-employed people only, it might require  that you  terminate your solo 401(k) plan, causing all kinds of problems and big headaches  for you .  If you have any plans to hire employees in the future, it might be best to avoid setting up an Individual 401(k) account for now.

You can choose between a Traditional 401(k) and a Roth 401(k). If you want to incorporate profit-sharing into your plan instead of just salary deferral,  then  you will need to open a Traditional 401(k).

One  major  benefit of an Individual 401(k) account is that account holders  are allowed to  take out personal loans against the account value.

Besides the restrictions on the Individual 401(k) plans from  normal  plans, the only things that really set E*Trade’s solo accounts apart from those at any other institution are the investment options of mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, and other assets. E*Trade will offer its own selection of portfolios to pick from if you don’t want to select your investments yourself.  All major platforms  are going to  have access to the same assets,  so ,   your pre-selected portfolios and account support  are what are going to make or break these 401(k) options. See our comparison of TD Ameritrade and E*Trade here.

The Verdict on E*Trade's Individual 401(k)

In the end, if you have the choice of where to open a new solo 401(k) account, it mostly comes down to which company you tolerate dealing with best, which ones you trust to successfully keep your money safe, and which company (if any) are forwarding the causes you care about. If you already have an investment account with E*Trade and have enjoyed your experience, then it might be a good idea to keep you accounts under the same umbrella. For example, E*Trade offers a Premium Savings Account , and you might prefer to have your retirement savings at the same company.

We encourage you to look into the financial history and health of a company you are considering investing with so you can save for retirement without worrying if your money will still be there in the future. You can see our complete comparison between Robinhood and E*Trade to see the differences.

A LIFE IMPOSSIBLE: Living With ALS: Finding Peace and Wisdom Within a Fragile Existence, by Steve Gleason with Jeff Duncan

After you turn 70, as I will this year, any celebration will be muted by an ever-increasing awareness of mortality. I fear death, but what I fear even more is the way in which I’ll die. I hope it’s a heart attack in the dark of night — quick and painless, here today, gone tomorrow.

I’m terrified that the cause will be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as A.L.S. or Lou Gehrig’s disease. It fundamentally destroys the nervous system, not all at once but in excruciating steps, leading to loss of muscle and the inability to speak, swallow or breathe on your own, constipation, drooling: You name it, A.L.S. will destroy it. The one area not affected is your brain. You understand what’s happening; you’re conscious of every indignity and humiliation until you die, usually within two to five years of diagnosis.

Which leads us to Steve Gleason’s memoir, “A Life Impossible,” written with Jeff Duncan. More than a decade after learning he had A.L.S. at the age of 33, Gleason has survived with the help of faith, resilience and the support of his wife, Michel, who has endured her own share of suffering.

I greatly admire “A Life Impossible” — its unflinching honesty and candor — but I’m not sure I am better off for reading it. Sometimes, ignorance is a mercy.

Gleason was a football player from Spokane, Wash., one of those athletes who supplemented his talent with a relentless work ethic, measuring himself by how much pain he could withstand, the more the better. He went to Washington State University, where he was a star linebacker on a team that went to the Rose Bowl. He wasn’t drafted but several teams expressed interest in signing him. For eight years, until his retirement in 2008, Gleason played on special teams with the New Orleans Saints, making his presence felt on every kicking play.

He was a physical kamikaze, fighting off blocks to get to kickoff and punt returners, all at blazing speed, a magnet for pain and adrenaline. He led the team in special teams tackles for several years and was named to ESPN’s All-Pro team for his performance during the 2002 season. But when the Saints returned to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, Gleason made a career-defining play: On the very first series of downs, he blocked a punt by the Atlanta Falcons that led to a Saints touchdown. It was an electrifying moment for New Orleans.

Unfortunately, Gleason’s post-football career wasn’t quite as triumphant. He lost $1 million in a series of ill-advised real estate investments, but then became determined to rebuild his financial life. Self-pity doesn’t appear to be part of Gleason’s vocabulary; the harder the challenge, the more he reveled in beating it.

Until Jan. 5, 2011, when he was diagnosed with A.L.S. after experiencing involuntary muscle twitches in his arms and shoulder. Over a period of years the disease wormed its way into Gleason’s body, reaching a point where he was unable to move, swallow, breathe or eat on his own, ultimately requiring a ventilator and feeding tube. He did learn to communicate using eye-tracking technology on a computer tablet and a “letter board” that facilitates communication via eye movements.

“My body is a prison,” Gleason writes. “I face insurmountable adversity each day, yet my family and I are able to survive within this miraculous, wonderful life. And I have learned to accept things that are out of my control, to transform suffering into strength.”

He does have advantages. He has used ongoing attention from the likes of Bill Gates to raise millions for Team Gleason, which is dedicated to helping people live with A.L.S. and finding a cure that currently does not exist.

The most moving parts of the book are the journal entries and emails between Gleason and his wife.

On their sixth anniversary, Michel wrote: “I worry about our future. I wonder how long you’ll be here, how old I’ll be when you are gone and if I’ll be too old to find someone else?”

Gleason’s response: “If I die before you, l hope you find someone to grow old with, or maybe find someone now, is that crazy?”

Gleason tends to wax poetic at times, quoting from the likes of Hermann Hesse, Pearl Jam, Yuval Noah Harari, Dave Grohl, Maynard James Keenan and Marcus Aurelius. Ultimately, though, Gleason is a symbol of resilience, hope and optimism. There are lessons to be drawn from “A Life Impossible”; some will undoubtedly come away from it with a message of uplift, and I should be among them. But as I turned each page with one eye shut and the rest of my body cringing, my greatest takeaway is that my fear of A.L.S. has only heightened.

I am not Steve Gleason. I don’t have the strength. How many out there really do?

Rowland Bagnall: ‘a great eye for closeups’.

Near-Life Experience by Rowland Bagnall review – the time traveller’s life

The British poet’s second collection is an exacting examination of the past, the present and an uncertain future

P oetry is a form of scrutiny, an inquiry that, when it succeeds, advances further than it is possible to go in prose. Rowland Bagnall ’s attractively questing second collection is an investigation of consciousness. Like Virginia Woolf, he records moments of being although, unlike her, his moments are likely to be guarded and seldom ecstatic and to involve openly philosophical reckoning. He is curious about how to situate himself – and by implication us – in time and space. The recognition that time can neither hold or be held is at once an ongoing preoccupation – and a provocation. In The Hare, he lends the day a human quality: “I wake into the morning / and find unanimous spring / and the windows are pale with filtered light / and the day asks, How shall I survive myself?” Time runs out and into Bagnall’s writing and, at the same time, each piece is a moment of standing still (the day can survive in a poem).

The poems themselves seem to stand to attention in this fine, exacting and hyper-vigilant project in which he cross-examines the present, past and most often (he is in his 30s) an unsteady future.

Nothing Personal, the opening poem, begins: “The century surges, / shuddering on, accelerating in pursuit / of someplace rumoured up ahead”. He gives us a hint, from the start, of his determination to consider the bigger picture and not neglect historical perspective while pointing out personal insignificance in a doomed world: “Still, like the inhabitants of a city / soon to be razed by a unit of cavalry, know / that this is happening in spite of not because of you”.

Self-consciousness turns out to be a strength and he seems to have found his own frequency on which to write – plus ample bandwidth. Double Vision at the Sink begins humbly as he looks down into a white ceramic sink, engaged in the task of shelling jumbo shrimp “snapping the carapace away” and the poem then takes off without warning (we do not discover how the meal turned out). He has an exhilarating and unpredictable sense of direction, launching himself from kitchen sink to sky and onward to the Mérode Altarpiece (c1428), which he has seen earlier on shrimp-shelling day. He is especially assured writing about paintings (reassured, perhaps, by their non-verbal authority). He describes Joseph “drilling holes into a piece of wood. Behind / him is a street-scene of a European / town outdating him by something close to fourteen hundred years”. By the end of the poem, he has (without notice) boarded a plane and describes watching an onscreen flight path and the attendant vertigo: “The planet is divided into time zones / on a gridded map. I zoom in on the country / then the city we’ve just left, then the apartment, / then the kitchen where I see myself before / the sink, my fingers working neatly on the silvery-grey / shrimp”.

Bagnall proves a master Zoomer and with a great eye for closeups. Unripe Plum is a wonderful description of a stubborn, dented fruit resistant to becoming a still life (the plum is subject to time too): “It changes colour / in the light getting weaker each day – sometimes purple, / sometimes mauve, even the dark blue that Cézanne uses / to underline his apples”.

The poems in which Bagnall allows the present moment to consume him, such as Landscape Unevenness, are his most arresting (in every sense) allowing for a fusion of time, place and self: his conjuring of a muntjac leads almost to becoming one with it: “like watching myself crash / away through the bush”.

Landscape Unevenness

In spring, when rain that fell some days ago has all but evaporated, becoming purposeful humidity, the ground gives slightly into you, your feet meeting the half resistance, a landscape unevenness.

Usually this has no impact – is largely ignorable – unless your movement makes it happen, where “it” equals everything and everything that comes to mind, each step bringing about the trees, engendering clouds.

Today produced a single muntjac – or so it appeared – initiated by a slip, the colour of raw clay, emitting centuries of heat – millennia even – like watching myself crash away through the brush.

Synergistic effect of modified anhydrous magnesium carbonate and hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene on flame retardancy of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer.

Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) is widely used in various applications; however, its flammability limits its application in wire and cable industries. In this study, 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH570) was successfully grafted onto the surface of anhydrous magnesium carbonate (AMC) by alkali activation treatment. The KH570 modified AMC (AMC@KH570) was then introduced into the EVA matrix along with hexaphenoxycyclotriphosphazene (HPCTP) to assess their effects on the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of EVA composites. The results illustrate a significant synergistic effect in enhancing the flame retardancy of EVA composites by using AMC@KH570 and HPCTP, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning test (UL-94) of EVA filled with 5 wt% HPCTP and 45 wt% AMC@KH570 (mAMC/H-45-5) reached 27.6% and V-0, respectively. The flame retardant mechanism was investigated by thermogravimetric/infrared (TG-IR) spectroscopy and residual carbon composition analysis. The results show that the thermal decomposition of AMC@KH570 and HPCTP consists of gas dilution, free radical quenching, and catalytic carbonization. Furthermore, KH570 works as a bridge to improve the compatibility of AMC and EVA matrix, which offsets the mechanical loss of EVA to some extent. The present research provides a new path to modify AMC and fabricate EVA composites with excellent flame retardant properties.
