Today the Law School is considered one of the UK’s elite training grounds for lawyers - and there’s no substitute for experience. We are ranked 5 th in the UK of 105 Law Schools for Overall Student Satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2022.

We teach a broad cohort of around 1200 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students representing 40 nationalities.  The University has a student population of around 14,000 and a large international community of students drawn from 130 different countries. Our staff have a broad range of research interests, reflected by our five specialist law centres; Centre for Commercial Law, Centre for Constitutional and Public International Law, Centre for Energy Law, Centre for Private International Law and Centre for Scots Law, and our Dispute Resolution Network. The Law School has its own dedicated library housing 55,000 volumes and providing access to all the main law journals and legal databases.

The School offers many specialist taught LLM degrees across five legal themes: Commercial & Trade Law, Energy & Natural Resources Law, International Law, Human Rights & Criminal Justice, and International Intellectual Property and Information Law. A number of our taught LLM programmes have 2 options – with Professional Skills, providing indispensable work-ready competencies or with Dissertation, providing specific research and study. We currently offer three online programmes LLM Oil and Gas Law ,   LLM Dispute Resolution and LLM International Trade Law. We also offer an LLM research and an  Accelerated LLB  for well-qualified graduates wishing to gain an additional degree in law. Robert Gordon University

Doctor of Law

The Doctor of Law (DLaw) course aims to provide opportunities for professionals in law and related fields to study legal challenges in an academic environment, drawing on theory and practice to develop insight into familiar but critical issues and to generate innovative solutions.

The Doctor of Law (DLaw) is a professional doctorate which provides relevant professionals with the opportunity to take work-based problems, study them from a perspective that blends theoretical insights from academic study with the knowledge, practice, and skills they have acquired in their specialist field. The goal is to generate solution-oriented outcomes which are immediately relevant to their professional communities and work environment.

Mode of Study

Mode of Attendance

Course Length

  • Online Learning

The course has been designed to help you return to academic work, reconnect with formal learning through carefully selected taught modules aims at strengthening your specialist knowledge and developing your research skills. You will study three research-related modules (if you are a full time student). In addition to that, you will select and study one module (30 credits) or two modules (15 credits each). You will also have regular meetings with your supervisory team.

Following completion of the taught modules in Year 1, and a successful Research Degree Transfer process, students will continue to work with their respective supervisory teams on the doctoral thesis for the remainder of the period of study.

Students will continue their research and the writing of a 60,000-word thesis which must focus on applied research. The outcome must necessarily include practical recommendations.

Modules and delivery order may change for operational purposes. The University regularly reviews its courses. Course content and structure may change over time. See our  course and module disclaimer  for more information.

Learning Methods

Throughout the taught stage of the course, the main mode of delivery will be lectures and interactive seminars, with appropriate support materials and discussion forums on the Virtual Learning Environment, CampusMoodle . The Law School encourages the utilisation of diverse range of teaching and learning methods (such as tutorials, forum interactions, online real time interactions, group work etc.) designed to encourage students to participate in the learning process. This approach will apply to full-time and part-time students. The group sizes for the DLaw will naturally be small and will therefore allow for effective interactions between learners and facilitators.

Activity Summary

  • Lectures, Seminars & Webinars  - 5-10 students per group, 50 hours per module
  • Project (Thesis) Supervision - one-to-one, 276 hours for the whole course
  • Independent Study - up to 26 hours per week

How long is a Doctor of LAw course?

The course length can vary between 30-48 months for full time and 42-72 months for part-time.

Independent Study

You will be expected to take ownership of your study and development as a researcher. This will require that you study independently throughout the course. We expect that you will spend approximately 50 hours per module for the taught aspect and approximately 26 hours per week for the research component.

Staff Delivering on This Course

The taught element of the DLaw programme will benefit from the in-school expertise through on campus and online learning and the innovative teaching approaches employed by Law School staff across our postgraduate modules. Staff with a blend of professional, academic, research and practice experiences will supervise/guide students through their doctoral journey. They will be the first point of contact for all academic issues and will be responsible for agreeing on individual schedule of work with students. They will provide guidance on the completion of the taught elements of the programme; preparing students for the transfer viva; meeting with them throughout the process to discuss and provide feedback on their research; monitoring progress and reporting progress to the Graduate School through the Research Degrees Coordinator of the Law School.

Typically students are assessed each year:

  • 2 written assignments, including essay
  • 1 oral assessment

YEAR 3

  • 1 oral assessment
  • 1 thesis of 60,000 words

We aim to provide you with feedback within 20 working days of hand-in for all written exams, coursework and practical exams.

Academic Support

The Inclusion Centre advises and supports students who disclose a sensory or mobility impairment, chronic medical condition, mental health issue, dyslexia and other specific learning differences. Applicants are encouraged to arrange a pre-entry visit to discuss any concerns and to view the facilities.

Online Learning & Support

All undergraduate and postgraduate students, whether you are learning on campus or by online learning, benefit from using our collaborative virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle. You will be provided with 24/7 online access to your learning material and resources, along with the ability to interact with your class members and tutors for discussion and support.

Study Skills Support

The Study Support Team provides training and support to all students in:

  • Academic writing
  • Study skills (note taking, exam techniques, time management, presentation)
  • Maths and statistics
  • English language
  • Information technology support

Library Support

The Library offers support for your course, including the books, eBooks, and journals you will need. We also offer online reading lists for many modules, workshops and drop-ins on searching skills and referencing, and much more.

Job Prospects

The DLaw will allow professionals to further enhance their practice-based learning and expertise, while also securing the highest academic qualification - a doctorate.

How Kamala Harris Embodies the Ethos of Howard University

The 2017 Howard University Commencement Ceremony

W hen she accepts her party’s presidential nomination on Thursday, Kamala Harris will become, among other historic firsts, the first Black woman and the first person of Asian descent to secure a major party’s nomination. But people often overlook that Harris is also the first nominee of either major party to graduate from a historically Black college or university (HBCU).

As a proud alumna of Howard University, Harris is one in a long line of the school’s graduates to become a leader within the African American community—and in the nation as a whole. That’s not a coincidence. Howard’s motto is “truth and service,” and the school has long instilled a deep appreciation for public service in its students. This history and Howard’s commitment to nurturing community leaders helped attract Harris to the school.

Although its importance as an institution that produces civic leaders has often been overlooked outside of the African American community, some of the most eminent Americans graduated from Howard. The school’s story is a reminder that while the history books do not always reflect it, civic leadership in the U.S. has always been multiracial.

In 1867, Congress created Howard University as a racially integrated institution, named for Union general and head of the Freedmen’s Bureau Oliver Otis Howard—a white supporter of Reconstruction measures such as the 15th Amendment that granted freedmen the constitutional right to vote. The school’s founders—a combination of white Christian philanthropists and white politicians, including Howard—envisioned an institution that would train formerly enslaved Black Americans to become teachers, physicians, and ministers. When the school opened, the administrators and most of the faculty had similar backgrounds to its white founders.

While its mission was the education of Black Americans, upon opening, Howard “gained the distinction of being the first University in America to be established without some restriction based on race, sex, creed, or color.” It enrolled white students, especially white women, who were barred from attending many other coeducational colleges and universities. Howard Medical School, for example, graduated a large number of white women physicians when few other D.C. schools allowed them to attend. The first woman graduated from Howard Medical School in 1872—some 77 years before a woman graduated from Harvard Medical School.

Debates over Black education in the second half of the 19th century pitted advocates of “industrial” education, like Booker T. Washington, against proponents of “liberal” education like W.E.B. Du Bois. While many HBCUs emphasized vocational training over professional training, Howard fostered an ethos of Black leadership based on rigorous academic and professional training equivalent to elite, majority-white institutions. From its earliest days, the school pushed its students to choose high prestige careers that would serve the African American community. Some of Howard’s earliest graduates became luminaries in the Black community.

Mary Ann Shadd Cary, for example, was a prominent abolitionist and the first Black woman to publish a newspaper. In the 1880s she became the first Black woman to enroll at Howard, one of the first graduates of Howard Law School, and the second Black woman lawyer in the U.S.

Shadd Cary advocated for women’s suffrage. She wrote to the House Judiciary Committee to argue that under the 14th and 15th Amendments, Black women, as well as men, were citizens and thus endowed with the right to vote. Furthermore, she asserted that she was also a Washington, D.C., taxpayer and therefore entitled to the right and obligation of voting. Shadd Cary registered to vote in 1871, nearly 50 years before the passage of the 19th Amendment. She believed women’s rights included not only the vote but also the right to earn a living in a satisfying career.

Shadd Cary’s sister, Eunice Shadd, graduated from Howard Medical School and was among the first African American women physicians. The Shadd sisters were two of Howard’s most prominent 19th century alumni. Howard was unusual in admitting them to programs that granted degrees in law and medicine. But despite providing coeducational opportunities, women students comprised a small fraction of the graduates of these programs. Economic constraints and gender ideologies limited their enrollment.

By the early 20th century, most of Howard’s faculty were Black and the school had gained its reputation as a “Black Mecca.” The professors were intellectual leaders of their generation, and many of them came to Howard because of exclusionary hiring practices at majority-white schools. As Black leaders came to dominate the faculty and administration in an era of resurgent racial segregation and white supremacy, Howard’s significance grew.

In these years, Thurgood Marshall, who became the most famous graduate of Howard Law, enrolled. As the legal mastermind behind the dismantling of state-sponsored segregation, he served as counsel for the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund in landmark civil rights cases, such as Brown v. Board of Education . He ultimately became the first Black Supreme Court justice. While best known for championing Black civil rights, Marshall’s jurisprudence on equal protection set the precedent for many other forms of civil protections, including LGBTQ rights.

Elijah Cummings, who earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard in 1973, became another luminary and leader. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, Cummings became famous for his defense of voting rights. He also worked to lessen racial health disparities and strengthen veterans’ benefits.

From the Shadd sisters to Marshall to Cummings, each of these leaders strengthened and expanded democracy for all Americans. They took the Howard motto and the school’s emphasis on service to heart. As Howard’s reputation for producing community leaders grew, the school’s desire to inculcate academic rigor in service of others attracted students who wanted to use their knowledge and degrees to improve others’ lives.

That included Harris. The Vice President matriculated to Howard in 1982, and from the time she was a prospective student, Harris recognized the heft and legacy of Howard’s history. She wanted to go to a university that would help her “get off on the right foot.” And she concluded, “What better place to do that than at Thurgood Marshall’s alma mater?”

Harris embraced Howard’s “expectation that we would cultivate and use our talents to take on roles of leadership and have an impact on other people, on our country, and maybe even on the world.” In the school’s vision, only then would students reach their full potential.

Harris describes Howard as “a place that shaped her” and her experiences as “formative” to her political career. Her fellow students were African Americans and students of African descent from throughout the African diaspora. During Harris’s four years at Howard, South African apartheid represented one of the most significant political issues on campus. Harris spent many weekends protesting it.

When it came time to choose a career, Harris followed the path of many of her university’s distinguished alumni and chose a career in law and politics, believing that representation could influence outcomes. She chose a career as a prosecutor in order to work on behalf of marginalized communities.

Her decision to pursue a political career as a fairly moderate Democrat reflected her longstanding desire—cultivated first at Howard—to work within institutions for structural change. Harris made this decision because her experiences at Howard taught her that “…there was an important role on the inside, sitting at the table where decisions were being made. When activists came marching and banging on the doors, I wanted to be on the inside to let them in.”

aberdeen university phd law

Stepping into the uncharted waters of replacing her party’s presidential candidate just 15 weeks before Election Day, Harris has captivated crowds eager to feel more hopeful about the future.

Whether her supporters know of Howard’s hallowed alumni or not, much of the exuberance around Harris’s candidacy lies in the hope that she will be a leader cut from the same cloth as these alumni who have come before her, leaders who worked to transform the nation’s future for all Americans in moments of uncertainty and turmoil. At a time when democracy itself could hang in the balance, Harris is aiming to follow in their footsteps.

What students say

We've crunched the numbers to see if overall student satisfaction here is high, medium or low compared to students studying this subject(s) at other universities.

How do students rate their degree experience?

The stats below relate to the general subject area/s at this university, not this specific course. We show this where there isn’t enough data about the course, or where this is the most detailed info available to us.

The stats in this section relate to the general subject area/s at this university – not this specific course. We show this where there isn't enough data about the course, or where this is the most detailed info available to us.

What are graduates doing after six months?

This is what graduates told us they were doing (and earning), shortly after completing their course. We've crunched the numbers to show you if these immediate prospects are high, medium or low, compared to those studying this subject/s at other universities.

Top job areas of graduates

Law graduates tend to go into the legal industry, and they usually take similar routes. Jobs are competitive — often very competitive - but starting salaries are good and high fliers can earn serious money - starting on over £24k in London on average. Be aware though - some careers, especially as barristers, can take a while to get into, and the industry is changing as the Internet, automation and economic change all have an effect, If you want to qualify to practise law, you need to take a professional qualification — many law graduates then go on to law school. If you want to go into work, then a lot of law graduates take trainee or paralegal roles and some do leave the law altogether, often for jobs in management, finance and the police force. A small proportion of law graduates also move into another field for further study. Management, accountancy and teaching are all popular for these career changers, so if you do take a law degree and decide it’s not for you, there are options.

What about your long term prospects?

Looking further ahead, below is a rough guide for what graduates went on to earn.

The graph shows median earnings of graduates who achieved a degree in this subject area one, three and five years after graduating from here.

Note: this data only looks at employees (and not those who are self-employed or also studying) and covers a broad sample of graduates and the various paths they've taken, which might not always be a direct result of their degree.

We've received this information from the Department for Education, via Ucas. This is how the university as a whole has been rated for its quality of teaching: gold silver or bronze. Note, not all universities have taken part in the TEF.

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).

This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

This information is from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), for undergraduate students only.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:

This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.

It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

Graduate field commentary:

The Higher Education Careers Services Unit have provided some further context for all graduates in this subject area, including details that numbers alone might not show

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?

Faculty and staff monday update: cornell-uaw negotiations.

Dear Faculty and Staff,

The University has continued to negotiate in good faith with the UAW over a new labor contract for our service and maintenance workers -- negotiations that continued throughout this weekend and into last night. After the University’s Thursday offer, representing a historic increase in wages for this bargaining unit, we further enhanced our offer yesterday to trigger, for the first time in a Cornell union negotiation, a cost of living (COLA) adjustment, in addition to the general wage increase, that protects all members of the bargaining unit from high future inflation.

Despite the University’s best efforts to negotiate a fair agreement and avoid a strike, UAW officials last evening rejected our offer. The union also continues to reject our proposal that we use the federal mediator assigned to the negotiations or a mediator of the UAW’s choice that could assist the parties in reaching a complete agreement.

The University offered our UAW employees a 17.5% increase in wages, compounded over the four years of the contract, and a change in time to promotion that would provide our lowest paid employees an immediate 10.3% wage increase . This is in addition to the enhancements noted in the message last Friday related to health and personal leave (“HAP”), vacation, and health and safety.

The University remains committed to bargaining in good faith.

In pressing for a wage increase even higher than the University’s historic offer, UAW national leadership has repeatedly pointed to Cornell’s $10 billion endowment. On this point, it is important to provide the following clarity:

  • The vast majority of Cornell’s endowment is restricted by agreements with donors and can only be used for purposes specified in the agreement.
  • The University does draw from the endowment each year, at amounts restricted by New York State law, for expenses such as financial aid and other student support, facilities maintenance and upgrades, academic programs, and research activities.
  • In fiscal year 2023, the endowment provided $386 million toward these kinds of expenses — money that would otherwise have had to come from sources like tuition and housing and dining charges.
  • Cornell is need-blind in its admissions and is committed to meeting the full need of those who choose to attend Cornell. As we continue our efforts to make a Cornell education affordable to more students and families in New York state and across the country, we cannot simply raise tuition to unmanageable levels to cover the cost.

The responsible management of the University’s resources still makes Cornell one of the best employers in the region and state with salaries outpacing local competitors.

Guidelines/Staffing Needs

With a strike declared, it is important to clarify guidelines for supervisors and managers and to share information about expected staffing needs.

First, we expect that some service and maintenance workers will strike and not report for work, as is their legal right. We also expect that other members of the UAW will continue to work during the strike, as is also their right. The choice belongs to each individual and a supervisor must respect an employee’s decision and avoid inquiring about that decision.

Work Expectations during a Strike

Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement that contains a valid “no-strike” clause limiting sympathy strike activity are expected to report for work. Similarly, all employees not covered by a collective bargaining agreement will be affected as follows:

  • Non-exempt employees who choose not to cross a picket line will not be eligible to receive their regular hourly compensation.
  • Exempt employees who choose not to cross a picket line will have their pay reduced accordingly.

FAQs and pay guidelines are available.

If you have any questions about an employee’s failure to report for work due to strike activity on the part of UAW-represented workers, please contact your local college or unit HR representative .

Civility and Safety

It is important to emphasize our commitment to respect and safety during this time, for both our employees in the UAW bargaining unit and the entire Cornell community. The University has implemented plans to ensure that those who wish to engage in their usual campus activities can do so. Likewise, we respect the right of our service and maintenance workers to lawfully and peacefully strike.

Alternative Staffing Assignments

Student and Campus Life, Facilities and Campus Services, and the SC Johnson College of Business, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and College of Arts and Sciences are working with contingency plans that modify service levels and reallocate staffing as may be necessary within each respective area. Details will be communicated by and to the impacted units.

However, as we find ourselves in unprecedented territory, the university must utilize the flexibility of reassigning staff from across the campus to meet critical safety and service needs in Dining, Building Care, and the Statler. If you are willing and able to take on a temporary shift or alternative assignment then please register here .

What You'll Study

Law at Aberdeen offers a wide choice of courses and a flexibility that enables you to study a curriculum in keeping with your personal interests and career intentions. You will develop a deep understanding of the subject by studying topics like Criminal Law, Foundations of Private Law, Legal System, Contract, Property Law, Public International Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Scottish Legal History and American Constitutional Law.

Compulsory Courses

15 Credit Points

This course is a compulsory course on the LLB degree introducing students to Scottish Criminal Law including its sources and current law. It examines various aspects of substantive law including crimes against the person, crimes of dishonesty, crimes against property and criminal defences enabling students to understand and apply the law in these areas. The course also develops student’s written, verbal and analytical skills utilising written course work and problem solving exercises in tutorial groups.

The course provides firstly a map of private law as drawn from the institutional scheme. It then progresses to an equivalent of the medical student’s study of anatomy in the sense that, concentrating on the law of property and obligations, it examines the main concepts of private law and how they operate together as a system to solve everyday legal problems.

This course introduces the fundamental components and characteristics of the Scottish legal system. It includes a study skills programme which covers different facets of the study of law along with a series of practical workshops which introduce key legal information sources (both electronic and paper) and appropriate search strategies. Lectures and tutorials will cover topics such as the Scottish legal tradition, formal sources of Scots law, the legislative process, organisation of the courts, judicial precedent, civil procedure, alternative dispute resolution, the European legal order, legal services and access to justice.

Contract is one of the central subjects of private law and is one of the main branches of the law of obligations, the other being Delict and Unjustified Enrichment. Contract Law covers obligations which are voluntary in nature. Every day we make contracts from buying a newspaper to buying a house. Contract Law is an area where Scots law and English law are very similar, and this course will cover Scots contract law but also highlight where English law differs with the aim of giving students a working knowledge of contract in both countries.

This course is an introduction to the laws and rules of the UK Constitution. Major topics include the institutions of state, parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law, the separation of powers, and devolution. This area of law is fast-moving, and an effort is made to address current issues.

This course, which is prescribed for level 1 undergraduate students (and articulating students who are in their first year at the University), is studied entirely online, takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete and can be taken in one sitting, or spread across a number of weeks.
