Van Mahotsav, also known as Forest Festival, is an annual celebration of the plantation of trees in India. It is celebrated in the first week of July.

The first week of July is the right time for planting trees in most parts of India since it coincides with the monsoon.

Van Mahotsav History

The first Van Mahotsav was organised by Punjabi botanist MS Randhawa from 20 to 27 July 1947. The first event of Van Mahotsav on 20 July 1947 was inaugurated by Khurshid Ahmad Khan, commissioner of Delhi with the planting of Bauhinia saplings in the morning.

Over the next few years, the tradition of the plantation of trees continued. It was made into a national activity in 1950 by the Minister of Food and Agriculture Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi. The festival was moved to the first week of July and renamed Van Mahotsav in 1950.

Van Mahotsav Significance

The festival of forests aims to encourage people to plant trees and create more forests in the country. Trees increase the production of food resources, provide food and shade for cattle, reduce drought, and help to prevent soil erosion.

Tracing the Origins of Van Mahotsav, a Week-Long, Nation-Wide Festival That’s All About Trees!

Celebrated in the first week of July, the festival of trees has been bringing multitudes of people across the country towards the common goal of planting more trees since 1950.

T he survival of the human race wouldn’t have been possible without trees.

Serving mankind since time immemorial with its shade and cover, food and livelihood resources, trees play a vital role in sustaining life on the planet.

As the population in India grows at an uncontrollable rate, the need for more infrastructure and living spaces continues to engorge whatever remains of the forest cover in the country.

In fact, according to a report by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the total remaining tree cover of India that included forests and non-forest areas was 24.16% in 2015.

Van Mahotsav , the festival of trees, is celebrated every year in the country in a bid to raise awareness about the importance of trees and encourage people to plant more of them.

Usually held from July 1 to 7, the festival finds mass participation of people, including government agencies, civic bodies and educational institutions across the country who come together every year to plant saplings.

Plant a Tree and Gift a Living is an attempt by The Better India along side NAATA Foundation to plant 5000 fruit trees in Aarey Milk Colony, Mumbai. Each of these saplings need an approximate amount of Rs 100 for their nourishment over the next 2-3 years, after which they will be sufficient to supplement the income of the community by adding an additional source of livelihood, while also restoring the green cover of the area.

But do you know how the festival came into being and who was instrumental for its conception?

Initiated in the year 1950, the movement was the brainchild of Dr K M Munshi, who had been the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food at the time.

Unnerved by the rampant felling of trees and the damage that was being caused to the environment, Munshi came up with the idea of an annual tree planting festival in order to raise awareness among the masses towards forest conservation.

Rendering the idea to that of a festival where the contribution of the silent sentinels towards the planet would be celebrated rather than just organising a plantation drive, he wanted people to be enthusiastic towards the cause just as one would be during other festivals.

Some of the objectives of Van Mahotsav as visualized by Dr Munshi were: to increase production of fruits, which could be added to the potential food resources of the country, help create shelter-belts around agricultural fields to increase their productivity, provide fodder leaves for cattle to relieve intensity of grazing over reserved forests, boost soil conservation and prevent further deterioration of soil fertility.

He also intended to inculcate consciousness and love for trees among the citizens and popularise planting and tending of trees in farms, villages, and municipal and public lands.

Interestingly, the term Van Mahotsav first cropped up in July 1947 after a successful tree plantation drive that was held in Delhi and saw participation of national leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Abdul Kalam Azad.

The choice of picking the first week of July to celebrate the festival was indeed a visionary move. Marking the onset of monsoon season in most parts of the country, most saplings planted during this period have more chances of survival than the ones planted during other times of the year.

An event that sees lakhs of saplings being planted every year, Van Mahotsav is indeed a celebration of life. With the ever-growing, life-threatening perils of global warming and pollution, the initiative flagged off by DR Munshi 67 years ago is what the world needs right now.

When is Van Mahotsav observed?

Van Mahotsav in India is celebrated every year in the first week of July. This year it is being celebrated from July 1 to July 7, 2021. 

Why is Van Mahotsav celebrated?

•A botanist called MS Randhawa had organized the first Indian national tree plantation week In 1947. In the same year, Khurshid Ahmad Khan, the then Commissioner of Delhi inaugurated the first event by planting Bauhinia saplings.

Van Mahotsav 2021: Significance

•The Global Forest Watch in its report stated that during 2019 and 2020, India lost approximately 38.5 thousand hectares of tropical forest which is nearly 14 per cent loss of tree cover. The total tropical forest area in the country fell by 0.38 per cent and the total tree cover decreased by 0.67 per cent in the country during the same period.

•Deforestation in the country has led to a 16 per cent loss in forest cover over the last decade.

In 2024, this festival will be celebrated from 1 July to 7 July. Van Mahotsav – The Festival to celebrate the forests in India

Festival of Forests? Sounds strange right?

We are all aware about the increasing problem of deforestation in India  – across rural and urban areas.According to the Forest Survey of India (FSI) survey – over the last 30 years, nearly two-third of the forests the size of Haryana have been lost to encroachments (15,000 sq km) and 23,716 industrial projects (14,000 sq km). The total forest and tree cover is spread across 802,088 square km, which is 24.39 percent of the geographical area of the country.

According to the Indian forest department, for every tree fallen, ten tree saplings should be planted to make up for its loss.But this practice is rarely followed. We all know that, Forests help us maintain ecological balance and reduce carbon footprints. However, hectares of forests are cut down or burnt every milliseconds. Unimaginable, isn’t it? Can we even exist in a world without trees and forests?

Celebrating the importance of tree, Van Mahotsav was initiated in the year 1950 to celebrate the importance of growing and saving our forests and create awareness about the ill effects of deforestation.  Its is an annual tree planting festival in the month of July. During this festival thousand of trees are planted all over India. It was started by K. M. Munshi, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food at that time to create awareness and the importance of the conservation of forests and planting of new trees.

The name Van Mahotsava means ‘the festival of trees’. It began after the July 1947 tree planting drive in Delhi heralded by national leaders like Dr Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru participated. The festival was simultaneously celebrated in a number of states in India. Since then, thousands of saplings of diverse species are planted with energetic participation of the locals and various agencies like the forest department.

Few of the other reasons which Van Mahotsav was visualized by  Dr Munshi were :

• To increase production of fruits , which could be added to the potential food resources of the country
• Help create shelter-belts around agricultural fields to increase their productivity
• Provide fodder leaves for cattle to relieve intensity of grazing over reserved forests
• Boost soil conservation and prevent further deterioration of soil fertility

No doubt, Governments, non-profit organizations like The World Wildlife Fund and Amazon Watch etc, are working hard to fight deforestation and  increase awareness. But to create a real impact, we all have to do our part. Here are few steps that every individual can take to make a difference –

• Plant more Trees
• Encourage your friends in your community to plant a tree and help keep your local forest safe (If you have one in your area). Every patch of green is worth saving.
• Put pressure on companies that are destroying forests to manufacture their products by not buying from them. Support brands with zero deforestation policies and environment friendly products and encourage people to do the same. Be aware and ask how the products you buy are being made. Go green .
• Practice the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle to lower the need for more raw materials from Trees.

Every July, since 1950, thousands of saplings are planted throughout India in observance of Van Mahotsav, a festival of trees. This movement was started decades ago by K.M. Munshi, as an attempt to spread awareness regarding the perils of deforestation and to restore the forest cover of the country, one plant at a time. Over the years, this venture has gained momentum and the Van Mahotsav in India is now celebrated in several parts of the country as a week long festival, typically falling in the first week of July. Individuals, communities, and organizations do their bit for the environment by planting trees of different species in their locality.

These tree plantation drives aim to help reverse global warming and pollution and to educate the population regarding the benefits of preserving the forest cover of the nation.

India is a land of revolutionary environmentalists who have devoted all their energy to restoring the greenery of the country. One such enterprising individual is Padma Shri Jadav Payeng , the man who single-handedly grew a forest on the once barren sandbar of the Brahmaputra River. Payeng is living proof of the fact that if you have the determination, you can make a huge difference to the planet with just your own hands and an undying spirit. Another role model when it comes to conservation of forests is Dr. Anil Malhotra, who has created India’s first private wildlife sanctuary, spanning over an area of 300 acres. The Sai Sanctuary is an excellent example of how one man’s vision to change the face of the planet can actually provide shelter to so many different species of plants and animals. If these environmentalists can transform treeless lands into forests then so can you. It all begins with planting just one tree in your backyard.

There are several ways in which you can participate in the celebration of Van Mahotsav. If you have enough space in your home or farm then you can arrange a local tree plantation drive there or if not, you can join hands with an NGO to help them organize the Van Mahotsav festivities. A large chunk of the population is still not aware of this festival, spread the word with the help of social media and encourage your friends and family members to join the movement.

Remember, the core idea of Van Mahotsav is not just to plant a tree, but also to nurture it throughout its lifespan.

This is why Van Mahotsav in India is observed in the monsoon season because the rains create a favorable environment for the plants to survive in the soil. Among all the fun and frolic of the rainy season, this is one of the monsoon activities that will ensure that the country continues to receive a fair amount of rain in the decades ahead.

“If a tree is saved even at cost of one’s head, it’s worth it” said the noted activist Amrita Devi Bishnoi . This is the reason why India has so many festivals related to trees. One of them is the Van Mahotsava Day or the Forest Day . It was started as a crusade with the lofty purpose of saving the mother earth.

Van Mahotsava (July 1-7)

Van Mahotsava was started in 1950 by K.M. Munshi, the then Union Minster for Agriculture and Food to create enthusiasm among masses for forest conservation and planting trees. It is a week-long festival, celebrated on different days in different parts of India .

In its original aim, every citizen of India is expected to plant a sapling during the Van Mahotsava Week. Also, awareness campaigns about benefits and protection of trees and the harm caused by cutting down of trees are held. It is the festival of life.

As a part of Van Mahotsav celebrations throughout the country, afforestation drives are launched in a bid to retain the vanishing forest covers of the country. Humans with their greedy needs have cut down a large part of the forest cover. In the name of urbanization and globalization of cities, trees were considered as the major stumbling block. They came in the way of flyovers, roads, hoardings and pavements and hence the easiest solution was to get rid of them altogether. This declining number of trees has brought a major change in climate too. So there is a dire necessity of festivals such as Van Mahotsava , to restore the forest cover in the country.

Hazards of Urbanization

The dwindling number of rainy days and increase in the intensity of precipitation events raises serious question on the increasing developmental activities taking place at the cost of cutting a large number of trees. India has long been vulnerable to floods, droughts, heat waves, cyclones, and other natural disasters and this trend is increasing with each day. With continuous human intervention against Nature, these disasters can no longer be considered ‘Natural’. An immediate example that comes to our mind is that colossal event that has occurred recently in Uttarakhand ( India ), which claimed the life of thousands of tourists and left many stranded.

To further highlight the importance of trees, we can take the example of dense mangrove forests growing along the coastal areas of our country, which helped in reducing the devastating effects of the Tsunami in 2004. They absorbed the oncoming waves and protected a large number of human habitation.

The ‘ Van Mahotsava ‘ festival of trees is a beautiful initiative to save the environment, to which we owe a lot. Generally, native trees are planted as they readily adapted to the local conditions, integrate into eco-systems and have a high survival rate. Besides, such trees are helpful in supporting local birds, insects and animals as well.

State Governments and civic bodies supply saplings to schools, colleges and academic institutions, NGOs and welfare organizations for planting trees. Let us join hands and save mother earth by doing this small contribution.
