Accounting and finance degree personal statement example (1a)

My decision to apply for a degree course in Accounting and Finance stems from my research in the college library and my career aspiration to become a chartered accountant. I particularly enjoy administrative work, numerical and statistical exercises, and opportunities to work with others as a team. I am confident that these strengths and transferable skills will be developed in a degree course, and valuable in my subsequent career

In order to get a head start, I have arranged a two-week work experience programme with Ahmed and Co accountancy, which provides services for well-known restaurants, cafes and other businesses. These two week work experience will provide me with a greater understanding of the basic skills required of an accountant, and introduce me to techniques such as cash balance appraisal, budgetary control and current cost accounting

I am currently studying A- Level ICT and History and AS- Level Urdu and Business Studies. Studying AS-Level Business Studies will provide the foundations and understanding of real life problems faced by businesses and the right solutions that are used by professional businesses in order to succeed and A-Level in ICT will give me a better understanding of advanced technology available that can be used in order to process more easily with less time consuming

I am a very active sportsman, taking advantage all sports facilities that my college provides. I have represented my college in cricket, football, basketball and cross-country and the medals, certificates and trophies accomplished can represent these. I hope to take these achievements further by representing the university in the sports facilities it will provide and by achieving more medals and trophies as possible

I believe university offers an excellent opportunity to further my learning in a challenging environment so I am applying for a degree in accounting and finance, which will enable me to acquire the skills required to understand the world of business and help me become a chartered accountant

I look forward to the challenge of a demanding degree course, and am confident that I have the personal qualities and academic motivation to make a success of it.

Accounting and Finance Personal Statement*

It is my curiosity towards the application of mathematics in the real world, especially in a business environment which has drawn me to study accounting and finance. I want to study this course as it is in line with my ambition of working in a position in which I can improve the financial prospect of a business by identifying the most efficient and cost-effective ways of running it. I am particularly interested in forensic accountancy as it is a field in which I will be able to use my skill of giving keen attention to detail to identify financial irregularities within an organisation.

Last year I attended a master class on economics at Cambridge University which increased my interest in the limitless opportunities of macroeconomics and microeconomics. In order to get a wider picture on how financial factors affect the overall economy, I read "Bottom Billion" and "India 2020", which allowed me to differentiate between factors that help or stop the development of nations. I was particularly intrigued by the economic growth of India because although India is a rapidly developing country, a large proportion of its people live in poverty. Upon reflection, I was able to realise that the cause of this may be due to the uneven distribution of wealth across the country. From following global news, I learned about the demonetisation in India; in my opinion, it wasn't a thoroughly thought out decision by the government as the act resulted in a negative impact on the poorer proportion of the population. I hope that by studying accounting I will get a better understanding of the reasons behind such decisions and its effects.

My career goal is to incorporate accounting and economics to become a chartered accountant. My work experience in an international factory, Rachel's Organic provided me with valuable experience in the finance department. I learnt about the process of projecting and estimating revenues and the importance of these estimates in influencing decisions such as whether to introduce new machinery. I was also introduced to invoices and gained first-hand experience in generating and analysing financial databases.

I had the opportunity of shadowing a financial accountant who introduced me to bookkeeping and the double entry system. My work experiences gave me some insights into the world of accounting. However, I felt that the concepts and terminologies that I came across were further reinforced by reading P. Weetman's "Financial and Management Accounting" books. From reading these, I taught myself some basic concepts and further strengthened my drive to study this course at university. I enjoy doing statistical exercises as part of my A-level Mathematics. I feel that using probabilities allows me to transfer the methods I learn in the classroom to real-life situations. The subject allows me to improve my analytical and problem-solving skills. From studying the sciences, I believe that my experience in producing hypothesis and then conducting experiments to find a conclusion will be useful when tackling accounting concepts.

I had the opportunity to develop my team working, presenting and ICT skills through Welsh Baccalaureate, where I worked with a group to set up a business idea. I was able to understand the importance of organisation skills, especially when handling the finances of a business. Additionally, my volunteering experience at the local Oxfam charity shop has improved my confidence and communication skills.

I am also a member of school Amnesty International group. Being a prefect gave me the enthusiasm to take on challenges and made me more organised and responsible. In my leisure time, I enjoy dancing and painting. I am confident that I have demonstrated the skills and determination needed to successfully complete this course. I believe my independent learning nature and my willingness to understand the concepts of a subject that I have not been taught before demonstrates my natural drive to study this subject.

Accounting personal statement example 1.

My world is populated by numbers. Numbers are the most powerful tool for good and I see myself as someone who can wield these numbers. That is why accountancy is the only option, in my opinion, to study at university.

Without accountancy, decision making would be performed blindly and con artists would run riot on even the most established company; without rigorous accounting practices the economy would be in jeopardy.

I once thought money was the root of all evil, but in fact it is the lack of knowledge on the subject that poses more of a threat; which is another reason why accountancy is the subject I intend to learn.

To prepare myself for the field of accounting I have begun to read into topics outside the syllabus. Keeping up with the business news through the Guardian and BBC news website, my interest in the field grew.

I was especially interested in reading the J P Morgan mortgage scandal. Books such as 'How to win friends and influence people' by Dale Carnegie, taught me the importance of handling people to succeed in the business world, 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' byRobert T Kiyosaki taught me how I can reach financial freedom using accounting concepts.

I feel taking English Language and Literature has been the benefactor of my now ever increasing interest in accounting through reading. I first started to read books such as 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'The Great Gatsby' but then my thirst for reading lead me to my first business related book, 'Think and Grow Rich' by Napoleon Hill.

Furthermore, it has enhanced my written skills and helped me become clearer in report and advisory questions in accounting.

A level Mathematics has enhanced my problem solving skills tenfold. I now look at problems at all different angles and examine the fine details that trigger ideas that allow me to conclude the problem at hand.

Media has also been a valuable subject. I now appreciate the affects that the media can have on companies and I am more aware of what people want which are both major actors when making financial decisions; such as how the public may view supplying products to a corrupt government and what affect it may have on profit.

My part time job on checkouts at my local supermarket has been one of my most thought-provoking ventures to date. I have learnt lessons in confidence, time keeping, motivation and customer service. Constantly I am forced to think on my feet and use my initiative in all types of situations.

By keeping a strict self-imposed schedule I have managed to cope with the pressures of work and school but at the same time enjoy my social life. This job has definitely helped me ready myself for the challenges I will face at university.

Acting has played a big role in my life. It has moulded my personality and is the cornerstone of my confidence. I have attended multiple drama schools and appeared in various performances for each of them; including a lead role in which I played an evil old lady trying to seduce the prince.

Also, I have been an extra in various films such as, 'My Brother the Devil' and appeared in music videos such as, Mr Hudson's 'Love Never Dies'.

The martial art, Shotokan Karate, is something I have dedicated myself to for six years. During this time I have achieved a brown belt. I have participated in many competitions and the experience has taught me discipline, control and has strengthened me as a person.

I have a question about my application or programme eligibility, when will i hear back if i have been successful with my application.

Once you have applied for your programme, you will receive a confirmation email. You will be notified about the outcome of your application via email at least 3 days before the programme start date. Good luck!

Can I apply to multiple programmes?

Yes, you can sign up to multiple programmes with us. The live talks will be available as recordings, so you can catch up on any potential clashes.

Who can take part in the programme? (Age limits, some programmes have location constraints but most don’t etc.)

Most of our programmes require students to be in school/college. Some programmes require students to be based in specific regions of the UK, this is stipulated by the organisations themselves, and is not defined by Springpod.

However, the ages mentioned on our programmes are more of a guideline than a strict limit. As such, we more than welcome older students to apply as well!

I have a question about my assignment

How long does it take for assignments to be reviewed.

Assignments can take up to a week or longer to review and be marked complete. Rest assured, it will be reviewed soon and your certificate will be generated once your programme has been marked as complete.

What do I do if I upload the wrong file?

If you make a mistake when uploading a file, please email [email protected]. We will be able to make a note on our system. Don’t worry, the outcome of your programme will not be affected by this.

I have a question about the programme dates, deadline or workload

How long will i have to complete this programme.

There is no specific cut-off deadline for completing your programme (although, if possible, we would encourage you to complete all the work within the time frame, alongside the live webinar sessions).

When does the programme start?

You will be notified if your application has been successful, 3 days before the programme start date.

What happens if I can't finish the work experience in time?

All programme material will remain accessible after the end date of the programme. Students can continue to work through their programme after the official end date. Although, if possible, we would strongly encourage students to complete all the work within the time frame, alongside the live webinar sessions.

How much work is required for these programmes? (Will I be able/should I complete more than one programme at a time)?

There is around 10 hours worth of work in total, spread across a two week period. The live talks will be available as recordings, so you can catch up on any work whenever possible.

When do the programmes run? (programme structure etc.)

Once you have access, you can view and complete the material as and when you can, within the time frame of the course in question (for example, within a two week period). In total, there is around 10 hours worth of work. The live talks will take place during weekday working hours. However, all live talks will be available as recordings and the courses can be completed at your own convenience. . There is no specific cut-off deadline for completing your programme (although, if possible, we would encourage you to complete all the work within the time frame, alongside the live webinar sessions).

I have a question about the live talks

What happens if i can't make a live talk/webinar.

All live talks will be available as recordings. You can access these at the same link used to access the live event. So don’t worry if you can’t attend a live webinar, a recording will be available for you to access through your programme within 24 hours of the live event finishing.

What software is required for the live talks?

We use a piece of software called BigMarker. It is a cloud based video hosting software. It requires no installations or downloads on your end, and will provide everything you need to join the live webinars through one simple link.

Will I be able to ask questions/do I have to have my microphone on?

You will have a chance to ask questions at the end of each webinar. These questions are typed out and then read to the presenter by the host of the live talk. There is no need to speak, and all student microphones will be muted for the duration of the live webinar.

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.
