13 Best Apps That Allow To Take A Picture Of Homework And Get Answers Online

Are you feeling stuck with homework ?

Whether you’re struggling with a particularly difficult math problem or have an essay you don’t know how to complete, there are apps that can help.

Using these apps is as simple as snapping a picture of your homework and uploading it to the app. You can get an answer to that question you were struggling with instantly, along with step-wise explanations on finishing it!

Many of these apps focus on math problems, because it’s often a lot easier to develop an app that can recognize number problems and solve them than create an app that can understand complex questions on economics, physics, or other topics.

However, there are apps that focus on other subjects as well – as AI becomes more powerful, more will likely be developed.

Usually, these apps fall into one of two categories. Some apps use artificial intelligence and machine learning to process the question and provide an immediate answer, while other apps show your picture to human experts who provide the help you require.

Either way, these apps are incredibly helpful, regardless of what grade you are in. Let’s get into it.

1. Socratic by Google

2. microsoft math solver, 4. photomath, 5. cameramath.

  • 6. AI ANSWER App Math and Homework (Android/iOS)

7. Answer.AI

8. quizard ai, 9. math scanner – math solutions, 10. gauthmath.

  • 11. Mathway (Android/iOS)

12. Maple Calculator

13. symbolab, wrapping it up, best apps that allow to take a picture of homework and get answers online.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Socratic is Google’s own homework and learning assistance app, powered by AI. It works for a wide range of subjects:

  • Math (algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry)
  • Earth and environmental science
  • US and world history

It’s pretty cool. Once you download the app, all you have to do is scan your homework with the app.

Then, use the cropping tool to select the exact question you are having difficulty with. Google will analyze the question and bring results from top websites, including from university and educational websites.

The results include answers, explainers with graphs and illustrations (when applicable), YouTube videos exploring the subject, practice questions, and more!

When it comes to math, things get really cool. Just scan a math question and Google’s AI will analyze it.

It will determine the type of question it is and give you an explanation. For example, if you are solving a quadratic equation, it will give you a brief overview of the quadratic formula and then show you step-by-step workings on how to apply the quadratic formula to solve the equation.

The workings are color-coded to help you keep track of what is going on and broken down into steps, with working displayed for each step.

Sometimes, there will be multiple ways to solve an equation. For example, in the case of quadratic equations, Google will show you how to apply the quadratic formula and how to factor it.

take a picture of homework and find answers

In addition to solving the specific question you inputted, it will also provide you with resources – videos, articles, and other explainers to help you learn more about quadratic equations or any other question.

Socratic by Google is available for both iOS and Android .

Microsoft also has a helpful tool, called Microsoft Math Solver. While it doesn’t focus on any subjects other than math, it will be extremely helpful if you need help with math problems .

It doesn’t matter which area of math you are studying – it could be calculus, algebra, statistics, or any other topic. It uses an advanced AI tool that can recognize any question type and provide steps on solving it..

You can either type the question in manually or scan it with your camera, and the app will do the rest. Another really cool feature is the ability to draw the problems on the screen using your finger.

take a picture of homework and find answers

In addition to explanations, you will get graphs (when applicable) that help you understand the problem graphically.

The built-in graphing calculator is very helpful as well. Graphing calculators can be pretty expensive, so why not use a free one on your phone?

In addition to all that, the app can show you additional results from the web. From video lectures by expert mathematicians to articles exploring similar problems, you can deepen your understanding of any math topic.

Besides, the app works in multiple languages, including Hindi, German, Spanish, French, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian, and many others.

It’s not just for elementary-level math. It supports algebra, basic calculus, statistics, and more. You can even use it to solve word problems.

You can download Microsoft Math Solver on iOS and Android .

Brainly is a fantastic homework helper app that connects you with human helpers.

What makes Brainly unique is its large community of students, teachers, tutors, and professors who are readily available to answer your questions.

When you ask a question, other students or teachers will answer it. You can post a question not just on math but on many other subjects – AP exams, computers, engineering, world languages, chemistry, physics, social studies, and many more!

It is free to post a question, and you’ll usually get an answer quickly. You will get up to two answers with explanations from verified experts and star students.

There are also hundreds of questions already answered. Simply search the database on any topic – there’s a good chance the question has already been answered.

You don’t have to do any typing. Just scan your question – on any subject – with the app’s built-in camera.

take a picture of homework and find answers

It will then extract the text from the question and scan the database for similar questions and answers. If none of the Q&As from the database satisfy you, you can post the question to the question board, and someone from the community will answer it before you know it.

Another amazing feature is the ability to ask a question using your microphone. The app will use voice recognition to search for an answer.

Brainly Tutor is a premium service that allows you to get answers and one-on-one help from verified tutors in math, biology, chemistry, or physics. When you ask a question, you will get detailed explanations.

You will then be able to ask followup questions – ask as many questions as you like! With Brainly Tutor, there is no limit to how many questions you can ask.

Note that you can still ask questions with the free version. However, you will have to wait until someone volunteers to answer, while Brainly Tutor subscribers get priority support.

Brainly also has a free service called Textbook Detective . Type in the textbook title or ISBN and you can get solutions to textbook problems on any level.

Right now, the only textbooks in the Textbook Detective database are only math textbooks, but they range from elementary-level math to college math.

The main reason I like Brainly so much is that you can get help from real people, both from instructors and from students who are doing the same course as you or who already completed it and got good marks, unlike other apps that rely entirely on AI.

The app is available on Android and iOS .

Photomath is another popular math solving app. It supports elementary math, calculus, trig, stats, algebra, word problems, and more.

To solve a homework question quickly, simply scan it with your phone camera. You can also manually input it.

Photomath was created by Damir Sabol, a dad who was struggling to help his kids with their math homework. He wanted to create an app that would help other parents in his position, and thus Photomath was born.

The app has been featured in major publications such as Forbes and USA Today.

When you scan a math problem, Photomath will analyze it and solve it, breaking down the solution into multiple steps that are easy to follow. When applicable, it will provide multiple ways to solve the equation – for quadratic equations, for example, it might show you how to factor, use the quadratic formula, use the PQ formula, and complete the square.

While Photomath is free to use, there is a premium version called Photomath Plus if you want to get even more detailed breakdowns of math problems and how to solve them.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Photomath Plus will provide you with in-depth explanations of mathematical terms used in the step-by-step solutions, with additional examples that will help you understand the context.

Animated tutorials that combine visual and auditory learning is another useful feature of Photomath Plus. Plus users also get ready-made instructions for hundreds of math textbooks.

You can download the app on iOS and Android .

CameraMath is a great app that will solve math questions you scan instantly, breaking them down into step-by-step solutions and providing graphs when applicable. I liked how you can click on “More Steps” to break a step down into additional steps.

While CameraMath is free, there is a premium version as well. The premium version gives you full access to the app and 24/7 access to live human tutors to answer your questions when the provided automatic explanations aren’t sufficient for you to understand the subject.

Download it on iOS or Android .

6. AI ANSWER App Math and Homework ( Android / iOS )

take a picture of homework and find answers

AI ANSWER is a great app that I’ve used myself, with satisfactory results. It can be a bit slow sometimes, especially with math questions, but the results are good.

You can scan any question on any topic. Crop the specific question you want an answer for, and the AI will generate an answer.

For math questions, you will get an AI-generated answer as well, which will break down the question into several steps.

The app is free to use, but it does push the premium version (which removes ads and allows unlimited questions) a lot, which I found a bit annoying. It asks you to sign up for a free trial every time you open the app, and you have to click the back button to continue.

Other than that, though, it’s a decent app.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Answer.AI is another powerful homework helper app powered by artificial intelligence. It works for numerous subjects, including math, history, English, biology, computers, SAT, and many others.

I like that it has different scan modes for general questions, math questions, and translation tasks.

I also loved how the answer is generated in a ChatGPT style format. You can maintain a dialogue with the chatbot answering your questions.

For example, you can ask the bot to explain the question a bit further or ask followup questions. That is impossible with a lot of other apps.

This is a great example of how AI chatbots can be used for education.

You can even tell the chatbot to write an essay about any topic, and it will do so.

When you scan a math question, the AI will explain what the question is and provide an explanation of the steps you need to solve it. For math questions, though, I prefer one of the tools focused entirely on math, as AI chatbots can sometimes be a bit repetitive, which can make understanding the solutions a bit more difficult.

One thing I didn’t like about Answer.AI is that you need to use points to ask questions. You can get free points by signing up, inviting friends, watching ads, and checking in every day. However, those free points will only get you so far.

For unlimited questions, you will have to upgrade to the premium version.

You can download the app on Android and iOS .

take a picture of homework and find answers

Quizard AI is an AI-powered Android app that you can use to answer homework questions . It is powered by ChatGPT 3.5.

According to Quizard, it is best for fact-based questions and not for math questions , as it is not that good at math.

I like how upfront Quizard is about the limitations of ChatGPT and AI in general. For example, ChatGPT is limited to a database that goes up to 2021 but not further and may occasionally provide incorrect information, as it is not capable of differentiating between what is true and what is false.

You can scan open-ended questions or even multiple choice questions and get answers immediately.

Simply scan a question, and you will get an answer powered by ChatGPT.

Quizard is free to use, but there is a Pro version as well. The Pro version will give you related resources every time you ask a question – you don’t get that with the free version.

Subscribing to Pro will also remove ads and speed up the response time.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Math Scanner is an app that you can use to scan math problems and get solutions. The app will display step-by-step solutions to the question, although I didn’t find it as useful as some of the other apps – it didn’t go into as much depth as I liked.

Alongside the answer, you can see related results from Google and YouTube, but they aren’t always relevant.

There is also a built-in math solver. It’s like a calculator, but better.

Start by selecting the type of math you need help with – finite math, linear algebra, statistics, etc. Then, use the provided calculator to input the question.

You will get an answer, and you can click on “Show Step” to display the steps required to solve it.

In the Learn Math section, you will find plenty of helpful resources and flashcards to help you expand your math knowledge.

Another good advantage of Math Scanner is that it has a community forum, where you can ask questions and receive answers from other students and mathematicians. Simply go to the Community tab and sign in to ask a question; you can also browse previously answered questions.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Gauthmath is an AI calculator and tutor that can help you solve complex math problems in just a few seconds. Snap a picture of the question and the app will provide you with a solution, along with step-by-step instructions for solving it.

I found Gauthmath pretty unique. Like other AI math solvers, it will give you an AI-powered solution, complete with steps.

However, it also has a feature in which it will match you with a similar question that was already solved by a student. The question might be exactly the same or slightly different.

For example, when I searched for the solution for 2x^2 = x – 4 = 0, this is the matching equation I got: 2x^2 = x – 1 > 0. Pretty similar, right?

When I searched for another question, I actually got the same exact question. Both times, I was provided with pictures of handwritten results, including the steps the student took to solve the equation.

Gauthmath also has a one-on-one tutoring service, with pricing starting at just $0.50 per question.

Gauth Plus is the app’s premium service. It gives you access to unlimited solutions and a professional tutoring team ready to provide tutoring services, complete with audio and whiteboards.

11. Mathway ( Android / iOS )

take a picture of homework and find answers

Mathway is an app that was created by Chegg. Chegg is a well-known study resource, Q&A, and tutoring site.

Its Mathway app provides AI-powered solutions to your math problems . Every step is broken down for you, and depending on the question, you can choose from multiple methods of solving the question.

I found that Mathway has more options for solving than other math apps. For example, when I snapped a picture of a quadratic equation I wanted it to solve, these were some of the solving methods I was asked to choose from:

  • Solve using the quadratic formula
  • Solve for x
  • Solve by factoring
  • Find the roots (zeros)
  • Find all complex solutions
  • Find the discriminant
  • Solve by completing the square
  • Find the sum and product of the roots of the quadratic equation

Sometimes, the various methods can be repetitive. At other times, they allow you to further understand different angles to a problem.

While Mathway is free to use, it will only provide the answer for free – if you want to see the step-by-step solutions, you will need to upgrade. That is why I still prefer other math apps, as most of them will provide the various steps for free.

take a picture of homework and find answers

Maple is a powerful calculator and math solver. It was created by Maplesoft, and the app will provide you with guided solutions to problems, along with 2D and 3D graphs.

The graphing calculator is a nice addition – it is available offline as well, although most of the app’s features require an internet connection to work.

If you have Maple Learn, you can also send pictures of your handwritten notes to Maple Learn if your answer was wrong but you don’t understand which steps you got incorrect. Maple Learn is a unique kind of open learning canvas that incorporates all steps of your learning into one canvas.

You can drag and drop everything you’re working on to rearrange the canvas and browse the gallery of existing study documents. Maple Learn also makes it easy to share your work and notes with others.

However, you don’t need Maple Learn to use the Maple Calculator. Both are powered by the Maple Math engine.

You can download the app on Android or iOS .

take a picture of homework and find answers

Symbolab is the last app we’ll be looking at. It’s a powerful app with hundreds of built-in math calculators – you can solve vectors, matrices, derivatives, and any other math problem .

Just scan a problem with the built-in camera, and you will get instant solutions, along with the steps needed to reach that solution.

Symbolab was created by an Israeli startup called EqsQuest. In 2020, it was purchased by Course Hero.

You can download it on Android and Maple Calculator .

All of these apps are incredible. However, I’d advise a word of caution for the AI-driven and ChatGPT-powered apps – AI isn’t always reliable.

It can’t determine what is true and what is not; it simply regurgitates information from the internet. Therefore, if possible, use an app that provides sources or references when searching for the answer to a question.

7 Apps That Can Do Your Homework Much Faster Than You

7 Apps That Will Do Your Homework For You

In the field of educational technology, some apps might be getting too smart.

More and more apps are delivering on-demand homework help to students, who can easily re-purpose the learning tools to obtain not just assistance, but also answers. Whether or not that’s cheating—and how to stop it—is one of the concerns surrounding a new app that can solve math equations with the snap of a camera . While the software has inspired teachers to create real-world homework problems that can’t be automatically solved , that strategy doesn’t hold up to other apps that tap into real-life brains for solutions.

Here’s a look at 7 apps that can do your homework for you, and what they have to say about cheating:

Price : Free Availability : iOS, Android app coming in early 2015

The new, seemingly magic app allows users to take pictures of typed equations, and then outputs a step-by-step solution. As of Wednesday, the app is the number one free app on the App Store. But the biggest issue, one teacher argues , isn’t if students will use the app to cheat, because many will. Rather, it’s about how teachers will adapt. A PhotoMath spokeswoman said educators have welcomed the app with positive reviews, but the software remains “quite controversial.”

“We didn’t develop PhotoMath as a cheating tool. We really wanted kids to learn,” said Tijana Zganec, a sales and marketing associate at tech company MicroBlink, which created PhotoMath. “If you want to cheat, you will find a way to cheat. But if you want to learn, you can use PhotoMath for that.”

Whether you’re a high schooler with eight periods of classes or a college student tackling dozens of credits, there’s one thing you’ve got for sure: a mess of assignments. iHomework can help you keep track of all your work, slicing and dicing it in a variety of ways. Sorting it by due date, week, month, or by course, the app is more organized than a Trapper Keeper. And in integrating data from Questia, you can link your reading material to your assignments so you don’t have to dig through a pile of papers to find the right information.

A scheduling feature can help you keep track of those random bi-weekly Thursday labs, and you can even mark the location of your courses on a map so you don’t end up on the wrong side of campus. And finally, with iCloud syncing, you can access all this information on whatever Apple-compatible device you’re using at the moment — no need to dig for your iPad.

Google Apps for Education

Taking the search giant’s suite of free browser-based apps and sandboxing them so they are safe for school use, Google Apps for Education is an excellent alternative to the mainstream installable productivity software, but this one has a perk that almost school board will love—it’s free. Packaging together favorites like Gmail, Hangouts, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Drive with Classroom, a digital hub for organizing assignments and sending feedback, the goal of this collection is to make learning a more collaborative process.

Though Google Apps for Education is cloud-hosted, the programs can be used offline, ideal for when your student needs to escape the internet and work distraction-free. And since it works on any device, it also helps students avoid buying overly expensive hardware. That means more money for extracurricular activities.

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS and Android

HwPic is a tutoring service that allows students to take send pictures of their homework to tutors, who will then respond within minutes to your questions with a step-by-step solution. There’s even an option to expedite the answers if a student is in a hurry. HwPic Co-Founder Tiklat Issa said that the app was initially rejected by Apple’s App Store, which believed it would promote cheating, but he successfully argued that just because someone uses the app in a way that it’s not meant to be used doesn’t mean the app should be punished.

Issa added that HwPic prohibits cheating in its terms and conditions. Tutors don’t solve homework that has words like “Quiz” or “Exam,” and they often know if a student is sending a photo during a test if they’ve paid for expedited answers, and if the photo is dim, blurry and taken under a desk. “We’ve minimized cheating,” said Issa. “We haven’t eliminated it. That’s kind of unrealistic.”

Wolfram Alpha

Price : $2.99 Availability : iOS and Android

Wolfram Alpha is similar to PhotoMath, only that it targets older students studying high levels of math and doesn’t support photos. The service also outputs step-by-step solutions to topics as advanced as vector calculus and differential equations, making it a popular tool for college students.

“It’s cheating not doing computer-based math, because we’re cheating students out of real conceptual understanding and an ability to drive much further forward in the math they can do, to cover much more conceptual ground. And in turn, that’s cheating our economies,” said Conrad Wolfram, Wolfram Research’s Director of Strategic Development, in a TEDx Talk . “People talk about the knowledge economy. I think we’re moving forward to what we’re calling the computational knowledge economy.”

Homework Helper

Price: Free Availability: iOS and Android

Chinese Internet search company Baidu launched an app called Homework Helper this year with which students can crowdsource help or answers to homework. Users post a picture or type their homework questions onto online forums, and those who answer the questions can win e-coins that can be used to buy electronics like iPhones and laptops.

The app has logged 5 million downloads, much to the dismay of many some parents who argue that the students spend less time thinking about challenging problems. A Homework Helper staffer admitted to Quartz , “I think this is a kind of cheating.”

Price: Free, but some homework services require payment Availability: iOS

Slader is a crowdsourcing app for high school and college students to post and answer questions in math and science. While students can post original homework for help, many questions in popular textbooks have already been answered on the app, according to Fast Company . An Illinois high school said earlier this year that it suspected students were using the service to cheat on their math homework.

Slader argues that it’s “challenging traditional ideas about math and education,” and said that the ideas behind its app “aren’t a write-off to teachers,” according to its blog . Slader told San Francisco media outlet KQED that it shouldn’t be dismissed as a cheating tool, but rather considered a way for students to access real-time help.

A soccer coach wants to know how many hours a week his players spend training at home. He has 20 players and he decides to ask the first 4 players to arrive at Monday's soccer practice how many hours they spend training per week. He then calculated that they spend an average of 10 hour per week. Therefore, he assumed that all the players train 10 hours per week. Is this an example of a simple random sample?

A No, because each student did not have an equal chance of being selected.

B Yes, because each student had an equal chance of being selected.

C No, because he did not sample every soccer player.

D Yes, the minimum number of students sampled need to be four for it to be a simple random sample.

A health psychologist was interested in the effects of vitamin supplements on the immune system. Three groups of adults were exposed (in a highly ethical way) to the cold virus; one group took no supplements for a week before exposure, another had vitamin C supplements, and a third had multivitamins (excluding C). The severity of the cold was measured as a percentage (0% = not contracted, 100% very severe symptoms). The psychologist also measured the number of cigarettes that each person smoked per day, as smoking suppresses the immune system. The psychologist was interested in the differences in the severity of the illnesses across different vitamin groups accounting for cigarette usage. What technique should be used to analyse these data?

A. Two-way repeated-measures ANOVA

B. Two-way independent ANOVA

No such thing as a silly question: answers to questions you might be afraid to ask.

Whether you just arrived at Iowa or have found a familiar rhythm on campus, you probably have questions. And like many students, you might be too shy to ask or you might not know where to go for an answer.

We’re here to help.

Here is a list of questions — and answers — on topics you might want or need to know.

1. What should I do if I feel anxious or if I’m struggling mentally? How do I find help?

First, know you are not alone, and there’s nothing embarrassing or shameful about reaching out for help. We know it can be intimidating, but finding the right resources is the first step to feeling better.

The UI has various mental health services that you can access no matter what you are going through, including anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, trauma, grief, identity development, and relationship concerns.

If formal counseling isn’t for you, several student support groups offer space where you and others with shared experiences can talk. You can drop in to any of these groups at any time.

The UI also offers several free workshops that focus on managing stress and anxiety. Check out the workshop options at Student Wellness and University Counseling Services, which cover topics such as mindfulness, sleep, motivations and procrastination, anxiety, and distress coping skills. These workshops help you build effective skills so you can better manage stress and anxiety.

If you think counseling services would be helpful:

  • Contact University Counseling Service at 319-335-7294 or email [email protected] . UCS has locations on the west side of campus (3223 Westlawn) and the east side (Suite 1950 in University Capitol Centre). Individual and group therapy are offered.
  • If you are unsure what services may be best for you, UCS staff can guide you in the right direction through an initial consultation . Please know you will be asked to fill out paperwork if you visit UCS for the first time or if it has been more than three months since you were last seen. More information on what paperwork may be needed will be provided during appointment scheduling.
  • In addition, you can receive 24-hour support through the UI Support and Crisis Line by calling or texting 844-461-5420 or chatting on this page online . You can use the line anonymously if you wish to do so.
  • You can also schedule a same-day, one-time appointment with a counselor if you would like to talk about an immediate issue or develop a plan to work on your well-being without ongoing therapy.

2. What do I do if I feel sick?

We understand that you don’t want to miss anything or fall behind in classes, but we recommend that you do not try to go to class if you are sick. Contact your professor to let them know you are sick, see if there is any makeup work you might need to do, and ask a classmate to provide notes for you.

If you think you may have an illness more severe than a common cold or you just want peace of mind, a visit to Student Health could help get you back on the mend sooner. Student Health is located at 4189 Westlawn and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. You can call 319-335-8394 to make an appointment or schedule one online.

There is no cost to visit Student Health; a student health fee is included in the fees you pay each semester. You might be charged for other things related to your visit, such as lab work, medications, or medical supplies. Those charges will be submitted to your insurance, and, if you are a first-time patient or change health insurance, you can fill out this form so Student Health has that information. Charges not covered by insurance can be paid with cash or with your U-Bill.

If you are unsure if a visit to Student Health is best, you can contact the Student Health Nurseline at 319-335-9704. The Nurseline can help you decide if you need to make an appointment, how to take self-care measures, answer medication questions, and more.

3. I started Iowa with one major, but I’m having doubts if this is the right one for me. What should I do if I’m considering switching majors or colleges?

Don’t worry! Many students switch their majors. The idea of what you thought you wanted to do might look much different now that you have started college, or you may not love your area of study as much as you thought you would.

First, your academic advisor is a great resource. Set up a meeting with them to talk about what you’re not loving about current classes in your major, what classes you do enjoy, and your interests. Your advisor can also help you figure out the length of time it would take to complete your degree if you decide to switch.

If you’re a first-year student, it’s likely your advisor is in the Academic Advising Center . But if your advisor is located within a college and you are thinking about a switch in majors that would also require a switch in colleges, your current advisor is still the best person to lead you in the right direction. You could also contact the Academic Advising Center to speak with an advisor about exploring other majors.

If you want to start thinking about a new area of study, looking at the general catalog can give you more information. You can also access sample plans on MyUI that will outline what an eight-semester plan for a new major may look like.

The Pomerantz Career Center also has resources for exploring majors and career options, including career assessment s. Iowa has more than 200 majors to choose from, so be assured you will find something that both excites you and helps you reach your career goals.

4. What should I do if I’m feeling overwhelmed with my courses or I’m failing a class?

First, don’t panic. Many students feel overwhelmed with their class load from time to time.

Speaking to your professor or teaching assistant is the first step. Your instructors will be able to give you a good picture of where you stand in a class and what you can do to get your desired grade. Professors and TAs hold office hours, and having one-on-one conversations with them can help you make a study plan or get a better grasp on the course material.

Your academic advisor is also a good resource, especially if you would like to change your schedule. They can go over the pros and cons of dropping a class.

If you are considering dropping a class, here is what that process will look like:

  • Keep in mind that you need 12 credits a semester to keep your full-time student status. Dropping below 12 credits could affect financial aid and scholarships. If you are concerned that dropping a class would affect your financial aid, contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.
  • You can drop a class on MyUI before the sixth day of the fall or spring semester, but it’s a good idea to speak with your academic advisor first.
  • After the drop deadline has passed for a semester, you can still request to drop a course, but you will need your academic advisor’s approval.

If you don’t want to drop a class but your grade is slipping, take advantage of tutoring resources . You can find academic help for specific courses, helpful tips in videos and worksheets, a private tutor or workshop, or a free supplemental instruction session.

5. Campus seems so big and I’m afraid of getting lost. How do I find my way around?

Navigating campus can be overwhelming when you first arrive and everything is new. There are plenty of campus maps to choose from, and it’s a good idea to walk to any buildings you’re unfamiliar with to find where your class will be held.

The UI campus is very walkable and bikeable, and those are main modes of transportation you will see students using. Students can also use Cambus for free around campus; here is a map of where bus routes will take you.

The main routes are the red and blue routes, which travel the entire campus. A helpful way to remember the direction red and blue routes go is “Blue to Burge, Red to Rienow.” The red route goes in a clockwise direction, and the blue route goes counterclockwise. Cambus also operates an Interdorm route, which goes to the residence halls and the Pentacrest.

The Transit app will show you real-time bus arrivals, departures, locations, and the closest bus stops. By subscribing to alerts on the app, you will be notified of service changes or severe weather impacts.

While we understand why you might like your vehicle on campus, you don’t need to bring one to get around and we encourage you to use other transportation. If you do bring a car, you will have to pay for a permit. More details on how to do so are here .

6. I used to play sports in high school, but that’s changed since I started college. How can I stay active?

Without sports and high school gym classes, it can be an adjustment to incorporate staying active into your college routine. Luckily, Iowa has many opportunities for you to get exercise (not to mention you’ll get your steps in walking around campus to your classes).

  • Campus Recreation and Wellness Center: This is perhaps the most well-known recreation facility, located on the east side of campus. Not only does it include all the gym equipment and weights you might want, but it also has an indoor climbing wall, swimming pools, a jogging track, and basketball and volleyball courts. It also has the Wellness Suite, where staff provide fitness assessments, nutrition counseling, and more.
  • Field House: Located on the west side of campus, this space houses basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts; a cycling studio; an indoor track; and a weightlifting room. It also has a swimming pool.
  • Fitness East: Fitness East is in Halsey Hall, and it can be accessed through the walkway between Halsey Hall and the IMU Parking Ramp. While this space is smaller than other facilities, it has all the gym equipment you need for your workout.
  • Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex: Located on Prairie Meadow Drive on the far west edge of campus, this space has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, pickleball courts, cardio equipment, and weights.

All enrolled UI students can access any recreational services facility, but you must present your student ID to get in. The cost to use the facilities is included in your student fees.

If you need something more structured, Iowa has many intramural sports teams you can join if you miss doing activities with a team or competing.

7. I’m away from all or most of the friends I grew up with. How can I make new friends and find a new community at Iowa?

Making new friends is hard, no matter what age you are. If you’re a recent high school graduate, you may have grown up with the same people and friends for most of your life. While trying to make new friends can be intimidating, the new people you meet in college can be some of the most meaningful relationships of your life. Just remember: You are not the only one trying to make new friends.

If you’re living in the residence halls, start by introducing yourself to people on your floor. You can also leave the door of your room open as a sign you’re welcome to visitors.

Attending campus events that pique your interest can help you connect with other like-minded people. In addition, joining a student organization — even if you stick with it for only a semester — can help you meet new people. If you don’t know where to start with finding the right student org for you, schedule a meeting with a Leadership and Engagement advisor to talk about your interests and get connected.

You can also meet new people by getting  a job or volunteering on campus.

Again, know that many other people are also looking for new friendships. Asking someone to grab a cup of coffee after class or to meet you for a weekend lunch session will likely make their day as much as it will yours.

8. Being away from home for the first time is harder than I thought it would be. What can make this easier?

No matter how far you may have traveled to become an Iowa student, it’s normal to feel bouts of homesickness, especially if it’s your first semester on campus. Here are some tips:

While it may seem counterintuitive, try to limit your trips back home because they could prolong your feelings of homesickness. Staying on campus for longer stretches of time can help it become more familiar to you and will help Iowa feel more like a new home.

Iowa also has so many ways to get involved. Be it a club, intramural sports, or a job, getting involved on campus can make you feel like you belong here (and you’ll make new friends).

Having new, yet familiar experiences can also help you feel more at ease. For example, if you enjoyed spending Sunday mornings at your hometown’s local coffee shop, find a new place to get your caffeine fix. If you liked spending your mornings at the gym, head to one of our great recreational facilities.

Time is the best way to work through this new transition, and know that you can talk to anyone on campus about how you’re feeling. Also, remember all your loved ones are just a call or text away.

9. This is my first time having to budget and be responsible for my own finances. What are some money tips relevant for me?

Budgeting can be hard, even for people who have been doing it for years. This may be the first time you’ve really had to think about all your monthly expenses. Making a plan to manage your money will be less stressful in the long run because it will help you create some savings and will make unexpected expenses less scary — while also building good habits for the future.

Many tools are available to help you create a budget, from just writing down a plan in a notebook to using an app. No matter what method you use, all budgets are made roughly the same way.

First, figure out what time span you want to create a budget for. Weekly or monthly budgets are common, but you could also create one for an entire semester. Next, determine your income for that time frame. Then, add up your fixed expenses (U-Bill, car payments, cellphone, etc.) and variable expenses (groceries, gas, entertainment, etc.). Once you subtract expenses from your income, you can determine if there are any areas where you’d like to save or how much money you have left over to save.

If you’re not sure what your expenses are for a certain time span, make a note of the money you spend during that time frame and see if your habits are on par with your goals.

Also, make sure you’re being responsible with any credit cards you may have. Even though you don’t have to worry about charges put on the card immediately, you don’t want any surprises when the bill arrives. Building credit is a good practice to start, but making note of charges to credit cards is equally important.

Lots of financial wellness resources can be found here . If you’re struggling with budgets or have other financial questions, meet with a financial aid advisor by scheduling an appointment on MyUI or email [email protected]

10. How do I balance academics, social life, and my other commitments?

Once you step onto campus, it’s probably tempting to jump headfirst into everything that piques your interest, but piling too much on your plate can lead you to feel stressed out or overwhelmed. Academics, jobs, student organizations, having fun with friends — it’s important to have all these things in your life, and finding the right balance for yourself is key.

Establishing a routine (that still leaves time for fun and spontaneous ice cream runs!) is a great way to feel balanced. After you get used to your class and homework schedule, figure out what you want to prioritize and determine if you’re using your time effectively. If you feel you’re lacking in one area, make it a bigger priority the next week.

If you’re struggling academically, you can connect with Academic Support and Retention for more resources to help you succeed. Also, Student Care and Assistance can help provide a personalized assessment of how you spend your time and ways you can adjust your schedule to match your priorities.

The Student Life Development Fund: provides support for the Vice President for Student Life to support all departments and units across the division. This fund is utilized to support many priorities and initiatives across the division.

10 Red Flags of Emotional Neglect in a Relationship

10. you only feel positive emotions during sex..

  • The key to emotional connection in a marriage is responding to each other's emotional needs.
  • Even though it's hard to see and recognize, emotional neglect in a marriage causes real pain.
  • Emotional connection is not a thing that you either have or don't have; it's an action that you can take.

By kieferpix/Adobe Stock Images

Emotional neglect in a relationship is the absence of enough emotional awareness and response. It may be invisible to everyone, even the couple themselves, yet it's painful. Both partners are hurt by what is not there .

In a now-classic 2004 study, researcher John Gottman found that the difference between couples that thrive and those that divorce is the frequency with which couples meet each other’s requests for emotional connection.

When it comes to relationships, feelings provide the connection, the warmth, the fire, and the glue. It is vital that couples reach out and respond to each other emotionally.

So what happens if you or your partner simply isn’t capable of requesting or responding? Beyond that, what if it’s no one’s fault?

The Emotionally Neglectful Relationship

If I had to describe an emotionally neglectful marriage in one word, it would probably be lonely . It’s as if you have someone right beside you, yet they are a thousand miles away emotionally. You can see them but you can’t feel their presence. You can talk to them but you can’t talk the way you want to talk. You are with them, but you feel alone.

It’s almost as if there is a wall between you blocking you from them, and them from you. A wall you can see through, but you can’t get through. That wall is made up of emotional neglect.

How Childhood Emotional Neglect Creeps Into a Marriage

Actually, it doesn’t exactly creep in. Instead, it strides through the back door, silently and stealthily undermining communication, connection, compassion, and warmth in your relationship.

Usually, emotional neglect is brought into the marriage through the childhood of one or both of the partners. When one or both partners comes from a family that’s not aware of feelings and under-attends to them (childhood emotional neglect), that partner naturally continues that process.

Growing up with emotional neglect makes you blind to your own emotions, the essential ingredient that is absolutely necessary to connect in a real way with your spouse. The “ emotion blindness” also extends to your partner. You may have difficulty noticing and responding to their feelings as well. This may result in an emotionally lonely partner.

If you and your partner both brought the emotional blind spot into your relationship, then a somewhat different problem ensues, because neither of you can see what’s missing. Neither of you may realize what should be happening and what you should be feeling. With no one able to call out the problem, you are in danger of slowly, painfully drifting apart until the growing wall of emotional neglect distorts your vision of each other, and the positive, healthy feelings that brought you together slowly drain away.

The Issue of Blame

In most families, blame has no place when it comes to emotional neglect. No child asks to be emotionally neglected, and most parents have no idea they’re emotionally neglectful. That’s how emotional neglect works: The emotional blind spot transfers silently from one generation to the next.

But, while no one is responsible for the emotional neglect they received, once we are aware of the problem, we are responsible for the emotional neglect we give. Once we see it in ourselves, we become the change agent. We become responsible for stopping the cycle.

No one says it’s an easy “fix.” But the problem of emotional neglect in a marriage can be resolved. The skills of emotional intimacy and connection are learnable.

10 Signs That Emotional Neglect Is Silently Undermining Your Relationship

  • You and your partner misread each other’s true feelings, actions, thoughts, or intentions very often.
  • As a couple, you avoid bringing up difficult things so as not to upset the other.
  • You haven’t figured out how to argue productively.
  • Your conversations are mostly focused on facts, events, or logistics.
  • Your spouse is not the first person you want to tell when something great happens or a problem comes up.
  • If you seek comfort from your spouse they often say the wrong thing.
  • You don’t feel like you’re a team taking on life together.
  • You often feel alone when you’re with your partner.
  • It can be difficult to find something to talk about together.
  • Positive emotions like love, warmth, or emotional bonding feel awkward or only happen during sex .

take a picture of homework and find answers

So What Now?

First, if some of these 10 apply to your marriage, consider the possibility that emotional neglect is at work. Then, remind yourself that blame is unhelpful and unnecessary here.

Now, keeping the Gottman research in mind, think of emotional connection in a new way. Instead of thinking of it as a thing that you either do or don’t have, think of it as an action— a process of give-and-take that you and your partner actively do.

Ask your spouse for emotional support, or to share in a happy, sad, or painful moment. Watch for times when they are requesting an emotional bond with you, and provide it.

Ask – Give – Take. Ask – Give – Take. Each time you do it, you are removing the invisible pain from your marriage. You are healing the emotional neglect, one step at a time.

Finally, instead of being silently hurt by what isn't there, you will be connected and enriched by what you have created together.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump recounted his assassination attempt in vivid detail and promised the largest deportation in U.S. history during a high-profile return to the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — a conversation that was plagued by technical glitches.

“If I had not turned my head, I would not be talking to you right now — as much as I like you,” Trump told X’s owner Elon Musk .

Musk, a former Trump critic, said the Republican nominee’s toughness, as demonstrated by his reaction to last month’s shooting, was critical for national security.

“There’s some real tough characters out there,” Musk said. “And if they don’t think the American president is tough, they will do what they want to do.”

Trump returns to X

The rare public conversation between Trump and Musk, which spanned more than two hours Monday night and was overwhelmingly friendly, revealed little new about Trump’s plans for a second term. The former president spent much of the discussion focused on his recent assassination attempt, illegal immigration and his plans to cut government regulations.

AP AUDIO: Trump and Musk talk about assassination attempt and deportations during glitchy chat on X

AP correspondent Norman Hall reports on a rare public conservation between the owner of the media platform formerly known as Twitter and the Republican presidential nominee and former president.

Still, the online meeting underscored just how much the U.S. political landscape has changed less than four years after Trump was permanently banned by the social media platform’s former leadership for spreading disinformation that sparked the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress and undermined the very foundation of the American democracy.

Such disinformation has thrived at X under Musk’s leadership, although it was largely ignored during his conversation with Trump save for a passing Trump reference to a “rigged election.”

The session was intended to serve as a way for the former president to reach potentially millions of voters directly. It was also an opportunity for X, a platform that relies heavily on politics, to redeem itself after some struggles.

Not available????? I planned my whole day around this

It did not begin as planned.

With more than 878,000 users connected to the meeting more than 40 minutes after the scheduled start time, the interview had not yet begun. Many users received a message reading, “Details not available.”

Trump’s team posted that the “interview on X is being overwhelmed with listeners logging in.” And once the meeting began, Musk apologized for the late start and blamed a “massive attack” that overwhelmed the company’s system. Trump’s voice sounded muffled at times.

Trump supporters were openly frustrated.

“Not available????? I planned my whole day around this,” wrote conservative commentator Glenn Beck.

“Please let Elon know we can’t join,” billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman posted.

Ahead of the event, Musk posted on the platform that X was conducting “some system scaling tests” to handle what was anticipated to be a high volume of participants.

Harris campaign mocks livestream glitches

The rocky start was reminiscent of a May 2023 social media conversation between Musk and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The Republican governor was using the social media platform as a way to officially announce his presidential bid, a disastrous rollout marred by technical glitches, overloaded by the more than 400,000 people who tried to dial in.

Trump’s Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, noted that Trump mocked DeSantis at the time.

“Wow! The DeSanctus TWITTER launch is a DISASTER! His whole campaign will be a disaster. WATCH!” Trump wrote in a message reposted by Harris’ campaign Monday.

Once the interview ended, Harris’ campaign responded with a statement saying, “Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024.”

Bitter rivals to unlikely allies

Monday’s meeting highlighted the evolving personal relationship between Trump and Musk, two of the world’s most powerful men, who have shifted from being bitter rivals to unlikely allies over the span of one election season.

Musk, who described himself as a “moderate Democrat” until recently, suggested in 2022 that Trump was too old to be president again. Still, Musk formally endorsed Trump two days after his assassination attempt last month.

During their talk, Trump welcomed the idea of Musk joining his next administration to help cut government waste. Musk volunteered to join a prospective “government efficiency commission.”

“You’re the greatest cutter,” Trump told Musk. “I need an Elon Musk — I need somebody that has a lot of strength and courage and smarts. I want to close up the Department of Education, move education back to the states.”

Image

Even before his endorsement, the tech CEO had already been working privately to support a pro-Trump super PAC. The group, known as America PAC, is now under investigation by election officials for alleged misleading attempts to collect data from voters.

Meanwhile, Trump has softened his criticism of electric vehicles, citing Musk’s leadership of Tesla. And on Monday, at least, Trump returned to Musk’s social media platform in force. The former president made at least eight individual posts in the hours leading up to the Musk interview.

How Musk uses X to amplify his views globally

Long before he endorsed Trump, Musk turned increasingly toward the right in his posts and actions on the platform, also using X to try to sway political discourse around the world. He’s gotten in a dustup with a Brazilian judge over censorship, railed against what he calls the “woke mind virus” and amplified false claims that Democrats are secretly flying in migrants to vote in U.S. elections.

Musk has also reinstated previously banned accounts such as the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Trump, who was kicked off the platform — then known as Twitter — two days after the Jan. 6 violence, with the company citing “the risk of further incitement of violence.” By November 2022, Musk had bought the company, and Trump’s account was reinstated , although the former president refrained from tweeting until Monday, insisting that he was happier on his own Truth Social site, which he launched during the ban.

Trump’s audience on X is legions larger than on Truth Social, which became a publicly traded company earlier this year. Trump has just over 7.5 million followers on Truth Social, while his mostly dormant X account is followed by 88 million. Musk’s account, which hosted the interview, has more than 193 million followers.

In a reminder that the world was watching, the chat prompted a preemptive note of caution from Europe.

Thierry Breton, a French business executive and commissioner for internal market of the European Union, warned Musk of possible “amplification of harmful content” by broadcasting his interview with Trump. In a letter posted on X, Breton urged Musk to “ensure X’s compliance” with EU law, including the Digital Services Act, adopted in 2022 to address a number of issues including disinformation.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung urged the EU to “mind their own business instead of trying to meddle in the U.S. Presidential election.”

Amazing app but can do better

This app has helped me A LOT!! The explaining is good and ask if you understand the problem. The only thing that I don’t like is that the time is limited. 10min is not enough time to ask the expect any questions that I may have while he’s trying to explain the problem to me. It should have more time added or no time at all and instead of buying just a single session there should be a price for a whole bundle or something to be paying monthly to get the help we need. $3.99 is a lot for 10 min and for one single session with the expert and have to pay another $3.99 for another problem to be solved with just 10min. I just think that should be fixed and it would be better if it could be different on the pricing, and if it was I would no doubt pay for a whole bundle or monthly for it. The app is just GREAT!

The app is a good idea

The idea of the app is really awesome and I love the new update where you pay $24 for unlimited problems. Here’s the issue though. I do school online and sometimes I take timed tests. When I’m struggling with a problem I use got it to help me solve it except constantly and I mean all the time I send in my problem and 20 minutes later they say “sorry your problem was not explained please submit it again” because some annoying tutor couldn’t answer it or was having connectivity issues. I can’t spend 20 plus minutes waiting for someone to help me. Not only that but I’ll send in perfectly clear pictures of the problem and they say “oops we can’t see it take a clearer picture please” THE PICTURE COULDNT GET ANY CLEARER. I’m begging the app to fix these kinks or I will stop using it. I’ve spent a lot of my own money on this app and I will put that money towards a different app if things don’t change soon. I don’t recommend people download this app unless you have all the time in the world to get help for one problem but keep in mind you may not even get help on the problem.

Could you please send us an email to [email protected] so that we can set up a quick sync? We would also want to give you some free sessions as an apology for this bad experience. Look forward to hearing from you.

Solid app, professional help is hit or miss

The app itself is great and pretty straight forward. Some of the professionals take their sweet time getting back to you though or give you the answer without explaining how to get there on your own. I understand that math in particular can be pretty hard to describe via text but I wish they gave just a tad more time. I feel like I don't get an answer until 7 minutes in and then when they start to break it down, time is up and they want you to pay again. Hopefully this imoroves. I'd love it if they could leave you some kind of helpful resource on the topic at hand once the chat is over. If I don't fully understand it in the chat and that's all I have to reference later, I won't fully understand it later either.
Hello there! Thank you so much for your feedback! We are working every day to provide effective help and it's stories like yours why we strive to create Got It! a great experience.
