17+ PDF Speech Therapy R Sound Activities {I Spy Articulation!}

The r sound. What speech therapist doesn’t love the r sound? Okay, that would be me. But I do know there are some SLPs out there who do love working on the r sound. That’s why I wanted to help my fellow Speech-Language Pathologists by providing you with a list of speech therapy r sound activities to work on in therapy or to simply send home for extra practice.

Correct Position for the Target Sound

In the English language, the r sound is a difficult sound to make as well as one of the last sounds to develop. There are two different ways a Speech-Language Pathologist can teach tongue placement for r remediation. 

First, let’s review the two different variations for the correct tongue position for producing the r sound:

• Retroflexed R

The two different tongue positions are very similar and vary in mid-tongue and tongue tip placements:

• Teeth: The /r/ sound is made by having a slight gap between the teeth.
• Lips: Lips should be in a neutral position and not rounded. (A rounded lip shape might lead to a /w/ in place of an /r/ sound, such as “wed” for the word “red”.
• Sides of the Tongue: Be sure to place the sides of the tongue against the upper side of your teeth to allow for the passage of air to go down the center of the tongue.
• Retroflexed Tongue Position: Have the mid-tongue / back of the tongue somewhat tense but not bunched up. Then place the tip of the tongue pointing up just past the alveolar ridge.
• Bunched Tongue Position: Have the mid-tongue bunched up near the roof of the mouth / back of the mouth. Then place the tip of the tongue pointing down or straight.
• Air: Then blow a skinny stream of air over the center of your tongue (you do not want the air to come out the sides of the tongue).
• Voice: The r sound is also a voiced sound so your voice box or vocal cords should vibrate. You can tell that their voice is turned on by touching your voice box on your neck and feeling it vibrate.

R Speech Sounds

• Prevocalic R – is when the r sound comes before a vowel sound, such as initial r words like “red” or “row”. 
• Vocalic R. – vocalic r words are when the r sound comes after a vowel sound, such as: or, ar, er, ear, ire, air. (more, far, later, hear, hire, pair)

Here’s an r word list for you to use in therapy or at home practice to work on your student or child’s speech.

• For Example: run, rest, ride, rake, root, parade, tarp, harp, worm, farm, soccer, wire, weather, faster, baker

Different Word Positions: R Words Speech Therapy 

Initial position of words.

The initial position is the r sound at the beginning of words. For example, “rock” or “race”.

Middle of Word

Some words have the r sound in the medial position of a word, such as “scared”, “tired”, and “fork”.

End of Words

The final positions of words are when the target sound is at the end of a word. For example, “tiger” or “star”.

Correct production – effective r therapy.

Here are a handful of different types of speech therapy exercises to help your speech students in the process of articulation therapy produce the tricky r sound. You can even grab a tongue depressor to use as a tactile cue.

10 Engaging Speech Therapy R Activities

Treating the /r/ phoneme can be tricky, tiresome, and annoying for the clinician and student! I haven’t met an SLP at the elementary, middle, or high school level that doesn’t need more speech therapy R activities for their caseload. Today, I will share ten engaging R sound speech therapy activities to help you get those high trials in therapy.

Before practicing R at the syllable, word, sentence, or conversational level, you want to ensure you have established a solid /r/ production. It benefits no one to continue drilling /r/ when it isn’t an accurate production. If you need more resources to establish the /r/ phoneme, keep reading because I share some great tools!

Feeling Defeated about Teaching the R Sound?

The best advice I got from a veteran SLP when I asked how to teach a child to say /r/ was, “Just grab a pair of gloves, a tongue depressor, and hope for the best!”

In his office video clip, Dwight Schrute sums up most SLPs’ feelings about the /r/ phoneme!  He says, “R is one of the most menacing of sounds!  That’s why they call it murder and not muck duck!”  Those are my thoughts exactly, Dwight.

R Speech Therapy Techniques and Resources

If you are looking for manuals and guides for how to teach R to your student, Pam Marshalla has two excellent books. The first book is called Successful R Therapy: Fixing the Hardest Sound in the World . You will learn tips for how to help your student use their jaw, lips, and tongue together to produce r. Pam Marshalla also has The Marshalla Guide: A Topical Anthology of Speech Movement Techniques for Motor Speech Disorders & Articulation Deficits, which is a fantastic resource for a spectrum of speech sound disorders. Not only does she include techniques for remediating the /r/ phoneme, but Pam also shares various techniques for many speech sound disorders. If you serve a caseload with various speech sound disorders, this may be a better fit for your needs, whereas the Successful R Therapy book is excellent for SLPs who treat R often with students.

Speech Therapy R Activities

Not having engaging speech therapy R sound activities for your sessions can make the day drag along! That’s why I am sharing a round-up of ten engaging prevocalic and vocalic r sound activities to help you keep students motivated to practice. If you need tips for encouraging R carryover into conversation, check out this blog post . 

• For word, carrier phrase, and sentence level R sound practice, check out the prevocalic and vocalic r activities flipbooks. You can get high trials while working on the vocalic r that your students are stimulable for using correctly. 

2. Figuratively speeching has an excellent articulation placemat set that is great for sending home for additional practice. It provides activities for the whole week on one sheet with letters included to send home!

3. Whether you are doing teletherapy, in-person therapy, or need to build a speech home program, using the digital speech folders for R will help you customize syllable, word, sentence, and carryover activities in one spot! Once your student’s digital speech folder is set up, you can easily share the Google Slide presentation with the family or pull it up on your computer for ready-to-go therapy.

R Sentences Activities and R Activity Worksheets

4. Erik Raj has these super fun Mini homework sheets for articulation. These mini R articulation worksheets have great silly R sentence questions that students can read and discuss. One way to incorporate more R sentence level practice is to have your student ask a friend, teacher, and parent the silly question outside the speech therapy session.

5. To up your student’s motivation to practice R sentences, use the No Prep Articulation Sentence Challenge Sheets . Students will be excited to see if they can beat their last challenge score! Make sure your students go slow enough to achieve correct productions. Play 3 rounds to see if they can get more trials or correct productions.

R Words Sound Loaded Carrier Phrases

6. Need resources for R words sound loaded carrier phrases? Use the sentence strip visuals to practice R with similar carrier phrases such as “I want a ____.” or with sound-loaded R phrases for initial r, r-blends, and vocalic r.

• Miss V’s Speech World has an incredible 52 Weekly /r/ homework worksheets product that helps you get sound-loaded R practice in your session and a one-page R worksheet to send home for weekly practice. 

Speech Therapy R Activities for Carryover

8. To get those high trials when reading passages, you will have fiction and non-fiction passages ready using the R articulation carryover activities set . No more stressing about taking data because the R sound is counted for you to take data easily! Find sound-loaded articles on Wonderopolis.org , NewsELA , or Readworks.org .

• Work on sequencing skills and explaining how to do something with sound-loaded R YouTube videos. You don’t have to spend time searching for videos because they have been organized as QR codes in the R Articulation carryover activities set . The best thing about these how-to YouTube videos is that they are mixed group friendly!

Here are a few how-to videos that have the R sound embedded in it:

• How to Make Rice Crispie Treats
• How to Care for a Rabbit
• How to Do Your Laundry
• How to Drive a Car

• One common core standard in classrooms is to work on comparing and contrasting. Comparing and contrasting occur when discussing characters in stories, scientific methods, and figurines in history. So, why not provide more opportunities for students to practice comparing and contrasting and practicing their r sound? Compare and contrast similar R nouns by attributes. If you don’t have time to think of word pairs, there are R flashcards in this set to help you save time . 

Some good R articulation words to compare and contrast are as follows:

• truck/train
• dinosaur/giraffe
• turtle/alligator
• grapes/strawberries
• rabbit/raccoon
• breakfast/dinner

You can even make a list with your students, fill out with a Venn diagram and then use it to practice carryover. Save it for future sessions as a warm-up.

15 Extra Fun R Sound Articulation Games for Speech Therapy

Games are a great alternative when articulation drills get, well… boring.

But can articulation games for speech therapy be effective as drill work? Absolutely!

You know it’s important to get plenty of repetitions when practicing the r sound in articulation therapy, and sometimes a few minutes of pure drills can be appropriate. But kids get tired of drills. You get tired of drills. Yawn.

So we try games to spice things up a bit. Play increases participation and focus if done right.

So how do you get in the mass r sound practice you need with a game?

The secret is to play games that don’t require a lot of set-up or a lot of gameplay time between turns to practice. And of course, you can have your student repeat their word or sentence for multiple repetitions each time they take a turn during the game. (Shhhhh, don’t tell them- that’s secretly drill work!)

While I love those toy-company games that pop, chomp, or crash, those get over-used too. So are you ready for some fresh ideas your kids will love?

These ideas are great for practicing prevocalic and vocalic r, and many will work just as well with other target phonemes too.

Articulation activities that will get kids up and moving:

1. Roam the Room : Each student gets a notebook or paper and a clipboard. They have 5 minutes to roam the room and write down all the items they find that begin with the r sound or have an r sound anywhere in the item’s name.

Next, head back to the table and have your students create sentences with one or more of the words in each sentence. Students score 1 point for every correct r word in their sentence, so longer sentences can boost their scores. Silly sentences are definitely allowed! Example: “The ruler ran right out of the room.”

For word-level practice, you can have your students repeat each word they found 10 times. Score a point for at least 5/10 correct with each word, 3 points if they get all 10 correct. This encourages them not to rush through the repetitions.

2. Beach Ball Toss : Blow up a beach ball and write R sound words on each section. You kids will stand in a circle, and toss the ball gently to another student. Whichever word the pointer finger is pointing to when the ball is caught is the word to practice. Try 10 or 15 repetitions for single-word practice, or have the student create a couple of sentences with their word.

Have a mixed group? Why not write a number from 1-10 on each space instead, then post each student’s numbered word list on the wall?

3. Hot Potato for Initial R : Students sit in a circle and pass a potato or a bean bag. As each student gets the “potato” they say an r word.

When the SLP says “reverse” the student must say the word given by the previous student and begin passing the “potato” in the opposite direction. If the SLP says “repeat”, the student repeats the last three r words they heard before passing the potato.

If you have the room, add some actions to the game! When the adult says “rabbit” the student hops around the circle and then sits back down in their place. You can also say “run” or “red” (Jump up and touch something red in the room and then sit back down.)

The object is to complete the action before it’s that student’s turn again (or in a smaller group, before play goes a specified number of times around the circle.)

4. Rip, Rap, Rope offers lots of tongue-twisting practice for initial r. It’s great for kids who have already established prevocalic r and need to work on consistency.

To play, your students stand in a circle. The first student claps their hands and says “rip.”The next student claps their hands and says “rap,” the next one claps and says “rope”. If a player says the wrong word or hesitates too long, that’s a strike. After three strikes, the player is out, and sits down, but can continue to say the words with the group. The last person standing wins!

Table games for articulation of R that makes practicing fun:

5. 101 and Done! This is an articulation game for older elementary students that uses dice. The goal is to build your score up to 101 points without going over. Give your students a pencil, one die, and a piece of paper with a list of their practice words, and room to keep score. They roll the die and say one of their words the number of times they rolled.

Your students then decide if they want to score the number on the die or multiply it by ten. For example, if they roll 3, they can choose to score 3 points or 30.

6. Connections This r sound game works well for students working on multiple word positions. The first student says a word that begins with an R sound. For instance, they may start with “rat.”The next student thinks of a word that begins with the last sound of the previous word but also contains an r sound anywhere in the word. For instance, they may say “tired”. The next student might say “dirt”.

Connections is a great game for your older elementary students. It works well as an r articulation activity for middle school too.

Play continues around a circle until a student can’t think of a word that fits. That student gets to make up a sentence using the last two words and then play begins again.

7. Articulation Chain : Tell your students they’re going on a trip and let them have fun getting creative with the location. You need to pack for your trip, but you can only pack things with an r sound in the name. You kids can brainstorm words or provide a list with their target sound.

The first student takes a turn and tells what they would pack. The next student repeats the previous item and adds a word. The next student repeats all previous items and adds a word. Challenge your students to see how many items in the chain they can remember!

8. Tell a Tale: Start a story and then have each student adds to the story using an r word. You’ll be surprised how creative your kids can be!

9. Never Have I Ever : This game is great for practicing vocalic r words. Students take turns finishing the sentence, “Never have I ever_____.” They must use at least one r word in their sentence. For example, they might say, “Never have I ever slept in a barn.”

Provide a list of target words, or let them generate their own! Target words can only be used once… so your kids will need to think of a new one on each turn.

10. Ready? Reach! This one works well for initial r practice. Fill a bag with pompoms, cubes, blocks, mini erasers or other small items that come in several colors. All the students say “Ready? The student whose turn it is says “Reach!” and reaches in the bag without looking, then pulls out one item and names the color they found. If they find a red one, they get a point.

11. Where’s the Pair? This is a variation on Ready Reach for vocalic R. Fill a bag as above. Your student practices a word or sentence, then everyone says “Where’s the Pair?” Your student reaches in and gets two items. If it’s a pair, you keep it and score a point. You can do this with cards or items. If you use cards, it’s fun to include a wild card that gives extra points.

12. Dots and Squares I’ll bet you played this paper and pencil game as a kid! You can easily play this game with 2-4 students, making it great for mixed groups.

Provide a piece of paper with dots in a grid. Students take turns saying their word 5x or say sentences, then connect two dots to draw a line. Each time a student completes a square, they write their initial in the square and go again to draw another line.

Articulation Games for R

The R sound is a later developing sound, usually mastered by age 5. R is also one of the hardest sounds to master in ANY language!

Take turns with your child saying the desired words. It is important to practice  hearing and   saying  the words.

• Write - Say “write” as you take turns drawing on a piece of paper
• Race - Say “race” as you and your child run across the yard
• Ready - Say “ready” before you start your race
• Read - Say “read” as your child reads a sentence in a book
• Fork - Say “fork” during meals
• Shirt - Say “shirt” as your child helps you with the laundry
• Sorry - Say “sorry” while playing the board game, Sorry
• Car - While talking about your favorite car, say “car”

R Words for Speech Therapy (Lists and Activities)

Looking for R words for speech therapy? Speech-language pathologists looking for a quick list of initial r words, medial r, and final r target words to practice during speech therapy, make sure to bookmark this post. You’ll also find some great ideas for making r therapy more effective with a variety of engaging games, articulation worksheets, and speech therapy activities. Not only does this blog post provide a list of prevocalic r, vocalic r, and r blends, but it also suggests a variety of strategies for r remediation. SLPs will be able to have a list of words on hand to easily use in the therapy room.

Correct Production of R

There are different ways to make the R sound! These different approaches vary in tongue placement and positioning. The most common approaches are known as the bunched r and the retroflex r. The bunched r literally involves the tongue bunching and lifting up and back towards the throat. The sides of the tongue make contact with the upper posterior molars. The retroflexed tongue position involves a more flattened tongue, with the tip of the tongue pointed up towards the alveolar ridge. Young children often have difficulty producing the R sound. McLeod and Crowe published this article , which reported that nearly all speech sounds are developed by age 6. A child’s speech intelligibility can be impacted by difficulty with R sound production.

Common R Speech Sound Errors

R is often thought of as one of the most challenging sounds to learn! Here are some common R speech sound errors:

• Oftentimes in younger children, the w sound is substituted for the R sound. An example might be “wabbit” for “rabbit”. This is known as the phonological process of gliding. Minimal pairs might be useful in this situation.
• Occasionally, students might substitute l for r (for example, “light” for “right”).
• R might also be substituted by a “y” sound (an example would be “ram” vs “yam”).
• Other R speech sounds might lose their “R” quality and sound more like a vowel sound. “ER” might be placed by a neutral schwa, for example.

A licensed speech-language pathologist can listen carefully to distinguish which r sound errors a student might be making.

How To Teach the R Sound in Speech Therapy

For children who substitute w/r, minimal pairs are often very beneficial. A rounded lip shape may also be contributing to this substitution, so providing cues and reminders to keep the lips retracted while saying R in the initial position of words can be helpful. Try having the student look in a mirror while practicing this sound. Providing accurate feedback is also important.

Older students with articulation disorders often struggle with the production of vocalic r words. School slps may wish to read this article for a deep dive into elicitation techniques for vocalic r. It includes 5 effective tips for teaching the vocalic r sounds. One simple idea is to try using a tongue depressor to gently lift the tongue up and back while smiling and saying “ER”. The teeth should be slightly apart, and the smile should be held during production. This can assist with eliciting vocalic er using a bunched R tongue positioning.

R Word Lists for Articulation Therapy

Do you need a list of functional words to work on the R sound in your speech therapy session? R can occur in many different positions of a word, and specific r words may be targeted in speech therapy sessions. The following word lists contain words with r in the beginning of a word (initial R), vocalic R words (initial, medial, and final positions of words), and initial R consonant blends. These R articulation word lists allow the speech therapist to easily work on a target sound and speech goals in speech therapy at the word level. Or, have your student practice at the sentence level or conversation level by using targeted words in sentences. Quickly pull these word lists up during your speech therapy session and pair them with the  game  or activity of your choice. These word lists provide less complex syllable shapes to more complex multisyllabic words.

Comprehensive R Program for Vocalic R

If you need a systematic program that’s going to ensure great success for your R students, you’ll want to check out this R program . For students having a difficult time achieving success using a traditional articulation method, it’s beneficial to try a whole new game plan. This program is based on the extensive research of Sandra Holtzman, and is based on her R CEU course , with permission. It incorporates orofacial myology basics, which is often the piece that many failed approaches have been missing.

Vocalic R Playing Card Game Companion

Do you need to review vocalic r in different word positions? Check out this card game companion , which pairs with a popular color-coded card game. It uses the colors and symbols on the playing card, and matches those with a target vocalic R word. Your player would draw a card, then check his vocalic r sheet to see which target word corresponds with the card he has drawn. Trust me, your elementary students will love this one! • Playdough Articulation Manicure Activity

The trick to making articulation drill fun? Try doing a speech manicure ! This articulation activity, which includes r articulation and vocalic r articulation targets, will become an instant hit in your speech therapy room. It’s ideal for younger and older students because picture-supported cards and text-only cards are provided. It’s simple to use. The speech-language pathologist chooses the target sound, and the student chooses the play dough color (in other words, the “nail polish” color). After saying a target word, the student places play dough onto the “nail”, and continues to repeat the process until the manicure is complete!

P.S. Don’t have any play dough on hand? You could also try pairing this activity with a magnetic wand and chips .

Mixed Group R and R Blends Worksheets

Trying to target language AND articulation goals in a mixed group? Let’s face it, sometimes the day can get chaotic! This mixed groups resource is designed to help maintain a school SLP’s sanity during a busy day. How does it work, exactly? Articulation words are sorted by noun or verb. While one student works on articulation, another student can work on language goals- using the same target words.

Use the noun articulation pictures to work on goals such as describing, following directions, spatial concepts, and making inferences. Use the verb articulation pictures to work on goals such as verb tense and creating sentences. These activity sheets are no prep and low ink, so you truly can use these while on-the-go. Just print them out and hand one out to each student.

These mixed group worksheets are also available as a bundle . The bundle includes other articulation targets, including k and g, sh, ch, j, l and l blends, and s and s blends. Tools and Techniques for Eliciting /R/ in Articulation Therapy

Teaching /r/ can be tricky! If you’re looking for some quick /r/ articulation lists, check out my systematic, super functional high-frequency /r/ packet ! This resource will help you target words your students actually use like “really” and “are” instead of random, noun-based targets like “rooster” or “monster”.

It includes printables to target R in isolation, syllables, words, phrases, sentences, and in reading! There are targets and worksheets including for all forms of /r/ including: ar, air, ear, er, ire, or, rl, prevocalic /r/, and /r/ blends. The worksheets work incredibly well for short, drill-based articulation sessions.

One of the things I was most nervous about when starting to work at the middle school level was working on the dreaded /r/ sound. Honestly, before starting this job, I didn’t feel comfortable eliciting and teaching /r/ at all. In the past couple years, I’ve gotten so much more comfortable with it and wanted to share some of my favorite techniques and tools with all of you!

TECHNIQUES FOR ELICITATION AND TEACHING /R/

Karla method.

This is my number one tip for teaching /r/ if you haven’t tried this already. It has probably worked for 75% of the students I’ve tried it with. The best handout I could find to explain the protocol I use is available for free on Speaking of Speech by clicking here .  This video is also really helpful to show exactly how to teach it to students. Sometimes, I put on the video in therapy and pause to practice! Easy peasy!

I’ve had an unlikely amount of success getting my students produce /r/ in “gr”, even going as far as to have bear growling competitions in therapy. It is tons of fun and it has really worked! When I have success with this method, I almost always use the “gr” context to get other words more successful. For example, if producing the word “rod”, we might say “grrrrrrr-rod” to elicit it. PS: “Kr” blends are also great for elicitation and teaching /r/ as well!

The Eureka method works on the “er” sound by placing a “y” before the “er” sound. This can help because it puts your tongue towards the top of your mouth, getting it ready for a good “er” sound! This video gives some more information on doing therapy with the Eureka method. I’ve had success having students practice words like “your” by producing them more like “yrrr”. You can build to saying things like “your rose”, producing it like “yrrrr-rose”.

Eee –> R

I’ve had success getting the /r/ from a nice, long “eeee” by slowly pulling the tongue back as you say it. Try it yourself! say “eeee” and slowly pull your tongue back! You might find yourself saying “ear” 🙂 This technique works well for students who have trouble visualizing that they need to really pull their tongue back!

L –> R

As a last resort, this technique will usually work. I prefer to work from an “eeee” if possible (see previous technique), but sometimes I need to use the /l/ sound to elicit an /r/. The reason I prefer to use this as a last resort is that it produces a retroflex /r/, which in my opinion can be harder to generalize into words/sentences/conversation. Maybe it’s just my mouth, but it definitely feels less natural to me! To do this method, have your student produce a nice, long /l/ sound. From there, have them slowly drag their tongue back along the roof of their mouth until they are producing /r/. I practice doing this without making sound for a while. For some students, I don’t tell them we are producing /r/ so they don’t psyche themselves out! It will eventually sound like the beginning of the word “learn” (i.e., lerrrr).

Placement Cues

I’m keeping this fairly general but sometimes you might need to back it up and spend a session (or 2 or 3) to discuss placement while teaching /r/. Some ideas for this are making playdoh tongues or drawing the tongue. I love calling it the “taco tongue” and using a picture of a hard shell taco as a visual. You can also use flossers (check out this post from Natalie Snyders about that) or small suckers (rub on the sides of their tongue to get that taco tongue going!) to help with placement. Definitely incorporate a mirror while giving placement cues so your students can see what they’re doing! Sometimes I forget that and it can make a big difference!

The Best Book Ever

If you’re consistently having difficulty eliciting articulation sounds, I 1829327% recommend this book . It has tips and tricks for elicitation. I’ve shared it with several SLPs in my district and several of them have purchased it after borrowing it! I know it’s expensive, but it’s amazing!

TOOLS FOR REPEATED PRACTICE

R made simple.

I’m putting this tool first because it almost belongs in the elicitation section of this post. I’ve recently had success with a couple of middle schoolers who’ve been working on /r/ for years with this program. You can check it out by clicking here. I love it because the kit is small (I don’t have a room so I see students all over the school!) and it can be used for longer sessions or 5 minute sessions. Step Up to R

This is my second most used commercial /r/ resource. It is great for traveling therapists and short, drill based sessions. Click here to check it out. It’s super quick and easy!

Hi – I want to ask you about the Karla method. It looks like it’s used by eliciting a retroflexed /r/ (“put your tongue tip on the back of the roof of your mouth) – but later on you wrote that you don’t love the retroflexed. Is that just the alveolar ridge, or is it curled back, as in a retroflexed /r/? Is the KARLA cueing for a bunched /r/?

Activities for speech therapy for r words.

There are so many fun speech therapy activities that you can use to target r in articulation therapy. All of these activities are full of the r sound! This makes it so easy to get a tonne of trials during play.

I have listed some of of my favorite games, toys, songs, and books that you can use in your speech sound therapy sessions. I have even included an r word lists that you can use with a huge variety of therapy activities!

All of these games have a bunch of naturally occurring r words!

Ridiculously Rousing /r/ Sound Articulation Activity Sheets – FREE DOWNLOAD

With 24 consonants and 20 vowels in the English language, it’s no wonder that many children end up struggling to pronounce at least 1 or 2. And of course, /r/ sound referrals are among the most common within the school-based SLP community. It’s likely for this reason that many creative activities for school-based therapy are focused on R words and /r/ sounds! In this spirit, we’ve developed 3 visually appealing R-packed articulation activity sheets that will bring some fun into your special education classroom or therapy session. Each is designed to address the /r/ sound in a specific part of the word.

The first articulation activity sheet focuses on words starting with R: Rug, Robot, Rake, Ring, Rocket, Rain, Ribbon, Rocks, Rabbit, Raccoon, Radio, Rope, Rose

The next articulation activity sheet encompasses words with R in middle: Bird, Squirrel, Fork, Horse, Heart, Carrot, Turtle, Earth, Camera, Pirate, Worm, Giraffe, Lizard, Shirt

These activity sheets are colorful, easy to download, and (best of all) free! The /r/ sound activity sheets combine visual scanning skills with initial, media, and final /r/ sounds.  Without even realizing it, your students will be working on building their vocabulary and visual perception skills!

How does it work?

Each activity sheet is comprised of 2 pages. Students will count the images on the first page and then count the quantities in the space provided on the second page. Have students see how many objects they can find and then say each one aloud to elicit the /r/ sound.

What is Vocalic r?

Vocalic R sounds, also known as ”r-controlled” or “r-colored” vowels, are vowel sounds that are influenced by the letter “r” in a word. Examples include words like “car,” “bird,” and “Earth.”

Several variations of the vocalic R sound can be found in the initial, medial, and final positions of words.

Each speech variation presents unique challenges in pronunciation.

Why Target Vocalic /r/ in Speech Therapy?  

Mastering vocalic /r/ can significantly improve a student’s overall intelligibility and confidence in speaking. However, mastering the vocalic r sound can be tricky.

Vocalic r Tips

There are a variety of techniques that speech pathologists can use to teach vocalic /r/ to their students with an articulation disorder.

I always start with teaching the /r/ sound in isolation, without any surrounding vowels or consonants.

This helps the student focus on the specific tongue placement and resonance needed to produce the sound correctly.

Once the student has mastered the isolated /r/ sound, I typically teach the vocalic /r/ in the context of syllables, words, and phrases.

One technique that I find helpful is to use carrier phrases. A carrier phrase is a short, simple phrase that contains the vocalic /r/ sound in a natural context. Some examples of carrier phrases include “I see a ___” and “Can you ___?”

Vocalic r Techniques

Other techniques that may be used to teach vocalic /r/ include “shaping” the sound by gradually moving from a similar sound (such as /eee/) to the desired /r/ sound, or using tactile feedback tools such as tongue depressors or mirrors to help the student feel the correct tongue position.

Why Canva is Perfect for Vocalic r Worksheets

Canva is a graphic design platform that offers a wide variety of tools and features that can be used to target articulation therapy for the vocalic /r/ sound. 

There are many worksheets, infographics, and games in Canva that you can use to work on their targeted sound.

Have you ever purchased a worksheet only to find words pronounced differently than how you usually say them?

For example, one articulation workbook contained the word “vase” on the final /s/ page. However, in northern New Jersey where I’m from, we say vase with a /z/! 

When you use these Canva worksheets, you can edit the words included easily and personalize the worksheets for your students.  

You can even add words that are frequently said by your student!

Articulation Cards

One way to target the vocalic /r/ sound using Canva is to use these free vocalic /r/ articulation cards . These cards help students practice saying words that contain the vocalic /r/ sound in a fun and engaging way. 

Here are some different ways you can use these articulation cards:

• Pair these articulation cards with fun games (like, Pop the Pirate!). For example, you could play a game like “Pop the Pirate!”. Students take turns picking cards and saying a vocalic /r/ word correctly before popping the pirate. 
• Print out two sets of cards and use them for a memory-matching game.
• If you use the 5-minute therapy technique, then use these flashcards for quick articulation drills. 
• You can even use these articulation cards to monitor progress!

The vocalic /r/ articulation cards can be customized to include both words and images, which can help students associate the sound with a visual.  

Sentence Level Practice

In addition to practicing at the word level, it is also important to practice using the vocalic /r/ sound in sentences. Have some articulation fun by combining these articulation activities with Canva. 

To start, open a new worksheet document. Then, have your students find clipart for each of the words they need to say.  Have them create silly sentences by adding text boxes to the worksheet document.  

You could also have your students create silly sentences using different /r/ words, such as “The retired rabbit could read rapidly.”

They could input this sentence into Canva’s Magic Image editor and create the image for the silly sentence.

Story Creation

Creating stories is a different way to practice using the vocalic /r/ sound in a more natural context. You can create a story with your students using the articulation cards above.  

• Lay out all the cards and have a student pick a card.
• Then, they have to create a line in the story.  
• The next person then creates another line in the story, and so on. 

When creating stories, include words that contain the vocalic /r/ sound in different positions.

For example, a story about a car race might include words like “start”, “participate”, “drive”, and “trophy”, all of which contain the vocalic /r/ sound in different positions.

Once the story is complete, students can practice reading it out loud while focusing on the correct production and articulation of the vocalic /r/ sound.

Vocalic /r/ Articulation Therapy Games

Vocalic /r/ games provide a fun and engaging way for students to practice their vocalic /r/ sounds in a natural and relaxed setting. This is the perfect way to make speech therapy fun!

Why Games Work

Firstly, games provide a relaxed and fun setting that reduces the pressure and stress of traditional therapy sessions. 

Secondly, games provide a natural way for students to practice their vocalic /r/ sounds in context.

Additionally, incorporating games into vocalic /r/ articulation therapy sessions can make therapy more fun for you and your students. 

Which Vocalic /r/ Sounds are Targeted with these Free Activities?

• Prevocalic r (initial r)
• /er/, /ire/, /or/, /ear/, /air/, and /ar/

Free Vocalic /r/ Games to Try

There are many games that a speech therapist can use to help their students with vocalic /r/ articulation therapy.  Students in the 1st grade and older will have a great time working on their target sound.

Here are some examples:

1. Roll and Cover /r/ Worksheets

Check out this FREE resource: vocalic /r/ roll and cover worksheets on TPT:  

• /r/ articulation worksheets (Free on TPT!)
• small objects to use as markers (e.g., beans, pennies, or chips)

Directions:

• Each player takes a turn rolling the die. 
• Then, they have to cover the number of pictures that correspond to their roll. 
• The player says the correct word on the picture using their best vocalic /r/ articulation. 
• If the player says the word well, they get to keep their marker on the picture. 
• If the player does not say the word correctly, they must return their marker to the starting position.
• The first player to cover all of their pictures wins the game.

2. Vocalic /r/ Bingo

• Vocalic /r/ bingo games (Free Download on TPT!)
• Bingo chips, erasers, or tokens
• Includes everything you need to target the vocalic /r/ sound in every position.
• Students will listen to the clues to guess the word that has the vocalic /r/ sound in it.
• Then, they use a dot marker or bingo chip to mark each word as it is called out. 
• To end a turn, the student says each word 5 times with the correct /r/ sound. 
• Whoever gets 3 in a row first wins. 

3. Vocalic /r/ I Spy

This game is a great way to practice vocalic /r/ in a natural and conversational way. Check out this freebie on TPT. 

Materials: Vocalic /r/ I Spy Posters

• To play, one player “spies” a word on the vocalic /r/ poster that contains vocalic /r/. 
• They can use this phrase: “I spy something that eats carrots.” 
• The other players then take turns trying to guess the word.
• The first player to guess the word wins the round. 

Additional Tips: 

Here are some additional tips for playing I Spy with vocalic /r/:

• Encourage your student to use complete sentences when giving clues to help them practice their grammar skills.
• Make the game more challenging by using more complex clues.
• Have fun! I Spy is a great way to practice vocalic /r/ words and help them practice their speech sounds.  You can also check out my summer I Spy speech therapy worksheets here! .
• You can also use these posters to target auditory discrimination!

4. Go Fish with Vocalic r

Go Fish is another classic fun activity that can be adapted to practice vocalic /r/. This is a great game to practice vocalic /r/ in a fun and competitive way.

These Vocalic /r/ flashcards are available for FREE on TPT : 

• Vocalic /r/ flashcards (get it for free on TPT!)

• Print out two sets of each vocalic /r/ flashcard. 
• Each player is dealt 5 cards. 
• The rest of the cards are placed face down in a pile in the center of the table. 
• On their turn, a player asks another player if they have a card with a matching vocalic /r/ sound. 
• For example, they might ask, “Do you have the carrot?” 
• If they do not have a card with that sound, then they say, “Go fish for a carrot!!” 
• The player who asked must draw a card from the pile. 
• The first player to collect 3 cards of the same vocalic /r/ sound wins the game.

Additional Tips

• There are a set of flash cards for each /r/ sound. Mix and match the different vocalic /r/ sounds or just focus on one type. 
• Each player must use the vocalic /r/ word in a sentence.

5. Booger or Burger Game

This game is available in Teachers Pay Teachers and is one of my best-selling products.  

This Booger Card Game is a fun, gross-out game that will engage your students while targeting their goals. 

This booger game will be a hit in your classroom because it “snot” your typical board game.  

Your students will laugh out loud while working on their vocalic /r/ goals or enjoying a brain break with this game.  

Additionally, the game is open-ended, so you can target any goal with this great activity:  vocabulary, grammar, describing, expanding utterances, following directions, social skills, and more!

Who can use this Booger or Burger articulation game?

This booger game is a fun way to target the vocalic /r/ sound (no matter how old a student is!) 

The booger game can be used in preschool, elementary school, middle school, and even older students!  

• Teachers – Brain breaks, homework assignments, and class rewards.
• Social Skills Groups – Use this game to work on expected vs. unexpected behaviors.
• Speech-Language Pathologist- This can be used in articulation therapy sessions with groups and individual students.  You can get tons of practice when working on the vocalic /r/ sound.  Your students will love saying the word “booger” over and over! 

How to play the Vocalic /r/ game :

• Choose a booger game board based on the level you want to play: Easy, Medium, or Hard. 
• The students will call out the numbers on the tissues and then check to see if there is a burger, booger, or tissue underneath.

• If they find a burger, then play continues until they find five burgers.
• However, if they find three boogers, the game is over.
• If they find a wipe, they can “wipe” away the boogers on the screen.

Each list of articulation sounds contains words with the target sound in the beginning, middle, and end position, including blends when applicable, as well as words that...

• are common and functional (words we use all day...everyday)
• are mostly 1 syllable (multi-syllabic words are more difficult)
• have a phonemic context that don't interfere with production of the target sound (most words)

If "R" is the problem sound using the word "Rope" makes saying the "R" sound harder because the "O" sound is considered a round vowel.

A round vowel is one where you round your lips to say it. Go ahead...try it by saying "O" as in "boat". You rounded your lips didn't you? I thought you might.

Children who have difficulty with the "R" sound tend to say the "W" sound...they say "Wabbit" instead of "Rabbit".

The "W" sound is considered a rounded sound too. Try saying the "W" sound without rounding your lips...you can't because that is how the sound is made.

So by pairing the "R" sound with the "O" sound like in the word "Rope", this makes the word extra difficult for a child who has a problem saying the "R" sound because the "O" that follows the "R" will naturally make them want to round there lips.

Korolyov or Korolev is an industrial city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, well known as the cradle of Soviet and Russian space exploration. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 183,402, the largest as a science city. As of 2018, the population is more than 222,000 people. It was known as Kaliningrad from 1938 to 1996 and served as the leading Soviet center for production of anti-tank and air-defense guns. In 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, the artillery plant was reconstructed for production of rockets, launch vehicles, and spacecraft, under the guidance of Russian scientist and academician Sergei Korolev, who envisioned, consolidated and guided the activities of many people in the Soviet space-exploration program. The plant later became known as the RKK Energia; when the Vostok space vehicle was being developed, this research center was designated as NII-88 or POB 989.
