Electricity from renewable energy sources such as wind and sun can, in some cases, directly replace fossil fuels by, for example, substituting petrol-driven cars with electric cars or by heating our houses with heat pumps. However, if we want to convert all of society to using green energy, we must be able to store the energy for those periods in which the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. There is also a need for fuels for heavy traffic, aircraft, ships, trucks, and for those parts of manufacturing industry that cannot immediately be electrified.

Power-to-X can meet both these challenges. The technology converts green power into liquid carbon-neutral fuels which, unlike power, can be stored easily and relatively inexpensively. At the same time, they can be used in the same way as fossil fuels and thus also for heavy transport and in energy-intensive manufacturing industry.

What is Power-to-X?

Power-to-X means converting power into something else (x). For example, power can be converted via electrolysis into hydrogen, which can be used directly or in combination with other elements for production of fuels or chemicals.

Power-to-X is an essential element in the green transition. In many cases, fossil fuels can be replaced directly by power, for example in electric cars, just as electric heat pumps can be used to heat our houses.

But not everything can run on electricity and batteries. For use, for example, in heavy transport, aircraft, ships, and trucks, Power-to-X is essential, as electricity can be used as a basis for the process of producing green fuels. The same applies to the very energy-intensive processes in part of our industrial production. Power-to-X can also ensure that we have chemicals for the manufacture of medicines, plastics, and many other products we know from our everyday lives and which are today made using fossil resources.

How does Power-to-X work?

The electricity in Power-to-X comes from renewable energy sources such as solar or wind energy. The first step in Power-to-X is to use the electricity in an electrolysis process in which water (H 2 O) is split into hydrogen (H 2) and oxygen (O).

Hydrogen can be used directly as fuel or it can be used in a synthesis process in which nitrogen (N) or carbon (C) from CO 2 is added. This creates new fuels and chemicals such as ammonia, methanol, and methane. These are often characterized as e-fuels or electro-fuels because they are produced using electricity in the process. They can be used as fuels for ships, aircraft, and trucks.

Research is being conducted into how to combine the two processes so that Power-to-X can be done more simply and effectively in a single overall process in the future.

Illustration showing the individual parts of Power-to-X. Illustration: DTU

Synthesis process with carbon

By adding carbon to hydrogen, e-fuels such as e-diesel, e-methanol, e-kerosene, e-dimethylates (E-DME), and e-methane can be produced. These are fuels that are chemically identical to the current fossil fuels, and they can therefore be used directly in heavy transport. The fuels are carbon neutral because they are produced from green power and carbon that we recycle from other use.

Synthesis process with nitrogen

By adding nitrogen (N) to hydrogen, you can produce green ammonia (e-ammonia), which can either be used for fertilizers in agriculture or, in the long term, as fuel in shipping.

Ammonia for agricultural fertilizers is currently produced in large and very energy-intensive plants. More than 1 per cent of the world’s total carbon emissions comes from the production of ammonia. A switch to e-ammonia will therefore make a major contribution to a more sustainable agricultural sector.

Why is Power-to-X necessary?

In the transition to a fossil-free society, renewable energy sources such as sun and wind play an important role. In this context, it is essential to be able to store the energy, so that we can also use it when the sun is not shining and there is no wind. In addition, part of our transport and manufacturing industry cannot be electrified, but requires that we convert electricity into something else.

Power-to-X can secure fuels for heavy transport, ships, trucks, and aircraft that cannot use electricity and batteries. In addition, Power-to-X is important for ensuring production of many of the things that are currently produced from fossil resources, such as medicine, plastics, and paints.

Research into Power-to-X

It has long been possible to complete the processes in Power-to-X. However, if Power-to-X is really to contribute to meeting the world’s growing energy needs, technology must become much more energy efficient, so that the fuels produced are profitable and thus competitive.

This requires that we invent new and more effective catalysts. Catalysts help with the whole Power-to-X process such as the conversion of electricity and water into hydrogen, and in the synthesis process with either carbon or nitrogen.

In addition, research is being conducted into how the process in Power-to-X can be simplified so that electrolysis and the synthesis process are integrated and constitute a single step. This will make the production more efficient.

Finally, the researchers still face the task of finding out how the Power-to-X technologies can best be linked with the rest of the energy system. There is a need to develop smart solutions in terms of system architecture, data, digitalization, and automation, so that the best synergy with the rest of the energy system can be built up from the start.

Power-to-X A key to decarbonization

Power-to-x is the carbon-neutral energy storage and sector coupling technology of the future.

The next ten years are crucial, predict most climate experts. Our actions within this decade will decide whether we are able to reach the ambitious goals of the Paris agreement limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C until 2050. But recent studies have shown that G20 nations are currently failing to reach their climate goals.

To get back on track by 2050, a carbon-neutral electricity supply has to be bolstered by a transition to sustainable heat and mobility. Marc Grünewald believes we already have the technology to achieve  successful decarbonization in all these sectors. As head of business development and new energies at the Power Unit of MAN Energy Solutions, he ensures that the company’s power technologies are future-proof.

His team turns recent technological innovations into marketable solutions ranging from hybrid and LNG power plants to cutting-edge energy storage like ETES (Electro-Thermal Energy Storage) and Power-to-X. The latter refers to the many possibilities of converting renewable energy, for example , into methane gas (Power-to-Gas) or liquid methanol (Power-to-Liquid). The resulting carbon-neutral synthetic gas can easily be transported through existing pipelines and used in gas-powered engines.

Why do we need an energy storage technology like power-to-x.

Energy storage is a global issue. In Germany, for example, we produce over 40,000 MW in offshore, solar and wind power, but each year around 5,500 MW of this potential get lost because the grids can't absorb it all. We have to store renewable energy for those times when it is not generated. Next to prevailing pumped hydro storage, a currently vastly expanding energy storage solution is the battery, but a lot of CO2 is created in its overall life cycle. In addition, its weight makes it unsuitable for many applications, for example in the maritime transport sector. To contribute to the environment, we have to make the fuel for propulsion engines carbon-neutral, which brings us to Power-to-X, or more specifically Power-to-Gas. Instead of storing sustainable energy in batteries, we can produce synthetic natural gas (SNG), which can then be used as fuel. That’s a path to a carbon-neutral future we have to explore.

The many possibilities of Power-to-X visualized in an infographic

How does power-to-gas work exactly.

Renewable energy that cannot be fed into the grid is used to produce hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis. Adding CO2 to the hydrogen in a methanation reactor results in methane, a carbon-neutral synthetic gas and very important future energy carrier, perfectly suited for cars and trucks, but also for public transport, and even ships. By using carbon-neutral fuels to power internal combustion engines, we can make a sustainable contribution to decarbonization immediately, using existing infrastructure. Our Power-to-Gas reactor, which has been successfully operating since 2013 in a German Audi plant, is a fantastic example: The SNG is fed to the natural gas grid, supplying Audi customers’ gas powered cars.

What role does man energy solutions play in the development of new energy storage technologies.

Energy storage is a very important part of MAN's strategic path towards a decarbonized future. Our goal is to take the concept, which has proven successful at the Audi reactor, to an industrial scale. These aren't just daydreams – we have teams of people here who develop and design these systems and invest money into products and technologies that will be market-ready soon. We already have a 50-MW comprehensive plant solution ready to offer. Our goal is to sell the first plant this year.

What is the future of Power-to-Gas?

The World Energy Council recently estimated a global demand for carbon-neutral synthetic fuels of 10,000-20,000 terawatt hours by 2050, equivalent to 50% of current fossil fuel consumption. To meet that demand, we have to build these facilities on a larger scale in countries that have high potential for solar and wind power – there are huge application potentials in the future. Right now, Power-to-X is where wind energy was 20 years ago. It's carbon-neutral, but also more expensive. This technology needs political support to make it economically attractive for the energy market, taking into account the emission-reducing effect of the resulting fuel and making it more cost-effective by factoring in the carbon price.

Power-to-X – the future energy storage solution for solar and wind power

The efficiency of electrolysis is currently rated 60-65%, but since the technology is gaining in importance, there is a great improvement potential. In future, values of up to 80% are conceivable here.

Marc Grünewald, head of business developement and new energies, MAN Energy Solutions

Power-to-X - Key to successful energy transition

Power-to-X (P2X) combines all available options for the effective and flexible use of surplus power from renewable energies – like using P2X to convert electricity into gaseous or liquid fuels or chemicals for long-haul trucking, shipping, aviation.

By using CO 2 emissions as feedstock, the fuels produced also become carbon-neutral. And when it comes to achieving very large ranges and the amounts of energy they require, P2X is an ideal supplement to battery technology.

What exactly is power-to-X?

power to x presentation

Efforts to transform the energy sector have so far focused on increasing renewable generation capacity to lay the foundation for a future energy system. This has made the use of electricity in the heat and transportation markets all the more important, since electric power is an efficient means of generating and using renewable sources of energy.

power to x presentation

To offer transformative solutions to address their intermittency, renewed attention has to be given to storage technologies, grid flexibility and demand side management. Power-to-X, or P2X, provides multiple options to meet the challenges ahead.

power to x presentation

Michael Sterner, a professor at OTH Regensburg University in Regensburg, Germany, defines power-to-X as “the means to convert electricity, understood to be primary energy, into an energy carrier, heat, cold, product, or raw material. It is an umbrella term for different ways of generating energy, namely power-to-gas, power-to-liquid, power-to-fuel, power-to-chemicals and power-to-heat.” His definition shows that the X in P2X stands for a variety of products, processes, technologies and applications (see fig. 1).

Some, specifically power-to-heat and power-to-mobility, use electrical energy as a direct power source. Others, namely power-to-gas, power-to-liquid, power-to-fuel and power-to-chemicals, produce substances or materials for certain sectors of the economy. A third group of methods stores electric power in hydrogen and methane to meet demand from the public grid at some future time. Thus, P2X provides the opportunity to create long-term storage options and substitute hydrogen, methane and other synthetic fuels for fossil energy sources in transportation, chemical processing and heat production.

The relatively low efficiency of power-to-X methods producing synthetic fuels limits their employment to areas in which the direct use of renewable sources of energy is either barely possible or simply not possible at all. For example, the high energy density required in the maritime and aviation industries makes electrification difficult to achieve, whereas chemical plants use hydrogen as a base component to manufacture several kinds of goods, such as adhesives and fertilizers.

A centre of expertise and collaboration

The International Power-to-X Hub is a centre of expertise and collaboration for innovative and sustainable green hydrogen and Power-to-X value chains.  Together with our partners, we identify Power-to-X solutions that are adapted to the specifics of each country and lead to sustainable economic transformation. The PtX Hub builds and fosters strong networks with industry, academia, administrations, and civil society with hubs in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

To reach net zero and the Paris targets, we need to defossilise our economies and societies. However, defossilisation cannot be achieved by electrification alone. Green molecules produced with Power-to-X enable hard-to-abate sectors in industry and transport to move towards climate neutrality.

Promoting sustainable aviation and shipping

power to x presentation

Sustainable aviation

Air traffic is expected to grow by 4% per year over the next 20 years. To reconcile this growth with the sector’s net zero goal by 2050, airlines and airports will need to switch to sustainable aviation fuel. Power-to-Liquid fuels are the most promising pathway – but not yet readily available in the market.

We accelerate the increase of availability of sustainable aviation fuels by facilitating demonstration plants, developing capacities, connecting stakeholders, and advising on policies and instruments such as a global book and claim system.

We contribute to the ACT-SAF programme of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) by delivering  aviation trainings  to decision-makers and developing policy recommendations for countries to become Power-to-Liquid pioneers.

Climate-neutral shipping

Maritime transport is responsible for 3% of global emissions. While demand scenarios expect global freight to double or even triple by 2050, the sector is committed to achieving net zero emissions within the same timeframe. Some technological solutions are already at hand: vessels propelled with PtX fuels such as e-methanol or e-ammonia are already in operation or under construction.

To support the transition to sustainable fuels, we facilitate the exchange of knowledge between policymakers, technology providers, ship owners, and other stakeholders.

We build capacity on technological options, international regulation, and incentivising instruments such as Green Shipping Corridors, in both the transport and energy sector. We carry out studies assessing market opportunities around green shipping in Morocco and South Africa. In Morocco , we are developing a Power-to-Liquid research plant in a consortium that will demonstrate the production of sustainable shipping and aviation fuels.

Policy & regulatory advice

As with all rapid technological advances, regulatory frameworks and policies for green hydrogen and PtX are lagging behind the innovations. Yet solid frameworks are needed for sustainable and safe production, trade and use, as well as investment security.

We advise on effective and targeted strategies, policies, and regulatory frameworks to enable the rapid scale-up of green hydrogen and Power-to-X markets. We advocate for innovative financing mechanisms and a global book and claim system and for defining credible sustainability standards and certification schemes.

For instance, we assist Argentina, Chile, and Kenya in designing and implementing their PtX strategies. We also take part in international initiatives and fora for advancing defossilisation with renewable hydrogen and PtX such as the Breakthrough Agenda, a coalition of initiatives started at COP27 to help keep 1.5°C in reach.

Capacity building

A thorough understanding of the technology and economics of Power-to-X is often still lacking, yet crucial to realising the full potential of PtX. We address this with our trainings for decision-makers.

The Basic Training , the Add-On Modules , and the Train-of-Trainers programmes educate and connect a critical mass of committed experts on renewable PtX and can accelerate the uptake of PtX production, usage, and trade in their countries.

Our alumni community of around 1000 policy makers regularly meets to share and compare latest technology and policy advancements in their regions.

Cross-sectoral stakeholder dialogues

In any sector where PtX can reduce emissions, there is much to be gained from sharing and exchanging expertise. Our unique asset is the ability to connect policy makers, project developers, civil society, off-takers, and investors from all regions of the world.

At the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2023 , we invited policy makers and project developers from Germany, Namibia, South Africa, Uruguay, and the MENA region to come to a joint understanding of how PtX can deliver both on climate action and economic development. A delegation trip in September 2023 brought experts from seven countries together to participate in the Transport and Climate Change Week in Berlin, followed up with a study tour to Copenhagen to connect with companies pushing climate-neutral shipping forwards.

power to x presentation

Truly sustainable PtX

For Power-to-X production to be truly climate-neutral as well as socially and environmentally beneficial, ambitious sustainability standards should be met from the start and to the entire value chain. We distinguish four sustainability dimensions – E (nvironmental), E (conomic), S (ocial), and G (overnance) and have identified a wide range of sustainability concerns and opportunities.

Our track record

We are active in 13 countries..

We are building a first-of-its-kind research and training plant that will demonstrate the production of certified sustainable aviation and maritime fuels in Morocco and are supporting the development and implementation of national hydrogen strategies, e.g. in Argentina, Kenya, and Namibia. X-ray vision chip gives phones 'Superman' power to view objects through walls

Researchers have developed an imaging chip for mobile devices that uses high-frequency radio waves to ‘see’ through objects.

Imager chip

Scientists have developed an imaging chip that could equip future smartphones with "Superman-inspired" X-ray vision — albeit operating within a much more limited range than the caped Kryptonian superhero.

The experimental chip consists of an array of three sensor pixels that emit and receive high-frequency radio signals in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band of the electromagnetic spectrum . Signals reflected back from the target object are then amplified and mixed by onboard components, enabling outlines of the object to be viewed on a display.

In tests, the chip could detect an object behind cardboard at a distance of around 0.39 inches (1 centimeter). The researchers published their findings Jan. 5 in the journal IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology .

It took 15 years of work — and an improvement in pixel performance by 100 million times — to make the chip small enough to fit in a mobile device, the researchers said in a statement . In the future, smartphones equipped with the chip may be capable of detecting the contents of envelopes or packages, or could be used to find studs, wires or cracked pipes behind walls.

"We designed the chip without lenses or optics so that it could fit into a mobile device. The pixels, which create images by detecting signals reflected from a target object, have the shape of a 0.5-mm square, about the size of a grain of sand," said co-author of the paper Wooyeol Choi , assistant professor of electrical engineering at Seoul National University, in the statement.

Beyond making it possible to peer through walls and inside envelopes, the new imaging tech may find applications in medicine and healthcare, the researchers said. They likened the technology to that already used in passenger scanners found at airports — though they noted that their imager chip does not use microwaves.

Instead, the imager chip uses 300 GHz signals in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band of the electromagnetic spectrum. These sit between the microwave and infrared bands and are considered safe for humans.

— Breakthrough 6G antenna could lead to high-speed communications and holograms

— DARPA's military-grade 'quantum laser' will use entangled photons to outshine conventional laser beams

"This technology is like Superman’s X-ray vision. Of course, we use signals at 200 gigahertz to 400 gigahertz instead of X-rays, which can be harmful,” said Kenneth O , professor of electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas, in the statement

Also unlike Superman’s X-ray vision, the imaging tech used in the chip can only be used at very close range — approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) away from the object being scanned. This means that thieves wouldn’t be able to covertly scan the contents of your bag or pockets without your knowledge, the researchers said.

The next iteration of the chip will be designed to scan objects from a little further away — up to 5 inches (12.7 cm) — making it better at capturing small objects.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Internet On During Power Outages

A power outage doesn't have to take your internet connection with it. Here's how to get back and stay online when your power is out.

power to x presentation

Stay online during a power outage by using a mobile hotspot or connecting your modem and router to a backup power source.

Extreme weather can strike anywhere, anytime, and this summer may be one of the worst on record . Heat waves in particular can wreak havoc on already strained power grids , resulting in temporary blackouts.

When bad weather knocks your power out, it could disrupt your internet . There are a few ways, however, to restore and maintain your online connection, even if the power is still out.

If you’re reading this, your power may be out and you need to restore your internet connection quickly. In that case, I’ll get right to it: Here’s how to stay connected to the internet when you lose power.

Locating local internet providers

Quick fix: Mobile hotspot and tethering

Activating a mobile hotspot on your phone essentially turns the device into a router, broadcasting its mobile internet connection for other devices to use. It’s not the same as your home Wi-Fi -- speeds are likely to be much slower and will only support a limited number of devices -- but it should get you by.

Read more: How to Use Your iPhone or Android Phone as a Mobile Hotspot .

Tethering is similar in that it shares your phone’s internet data with other devices, but it does so via a wired (USB or Ethernet ) or Bluetooth connection rather than Wi-Fi.

A few things to keep in mind when using a mobile hotspot or tethering:

  • The connection only works until your phone dies. Consider charging it in your car (if you can safely access it) if your battery starts to run low before the power comes back on.
  • Having the mobile hotspot function on your phone doesn’t necessarily mean the service is included with your cellular plan.
  • You’ll be using your phone’s data. If you have a cap, using a mobile hotspot can put you over the limit, which can result in added fees or throttled speeds. Even if your cellular plan offers “unlimited” data, there may be a soft cap or a limit specific to mobile hotspot use.

Contact your cellular service provider to find out if mobile hotspot use is included in your plan and if any data limits apply. If you have a data cap, check out CNET’s guide to managing your data use .

Automatic fix: Cellular internet backup

Select internet providers offer a separate cellular plan or service add-on to keep you online. Xfinity’s Storm-Ready Wi-Fi and T-Mobile’s new Home Internet Backup plan provide equipment and a cellular connection, for example, when your standard connection goes down.

Storm-Ready Wi-Fi is available to Xfinity Internet customers for $7 a month for 36 months or a one-time fee of $252 for the rechargeable 4-hour battery backup. When the power goes out or your cable internet connection is lost, internet service automatically switches to a 4G LTE cellular connection with unlimited data.

T-Mobile offers a 5G home internet connection (where available) but with a data cap and a slightly higher monthly fee. The Home Internet Backup plan includes 130GB of data and free equipment starting at $30 a month or $20 for T-Mobile voice customers.

You will need power to the T-Mobile router, however, so if you intend to use your Home Internet Backup service during power outages, you may want to invest in a battery backup or other portable power device .

Long-term fix: Generators or other power sources

Getting power to the modem or router may be all you need to keep your internet going when the power goes out.

In many cases, a local power outage doesn’t stop internet service from coming to your home. Wireless and fiber internet don't need power to travel, though a power outage at the point of distribution may cause a temporary outage.

Cable internet requires power to the nodes (connection points that send internet service along), but many ISPs will have a backup power source, enabling them to keep your internet service going.

So the problem isn’t necessarily getting internet service to your home; it’s how to use it. Without power to your modem or ONT device, you can’t connect to the internet and without power to your router, there’s no Wi-Fi.

Portable power stations and generators are ideal for continuously powering things like your refrigerator, heaters, fans or internet equipment. Here are some helpful links to finding the right power device for your home and needs.

What about battery backups or a UPS?

Rechargeable battery backups will keep your internet equipment running for a few hours at best before needing to be recharged. Without a power source, this can be difficult, but a solar battery may be the solution .

As for a UPS, or uninterruptible power supply, most devices aren’t designed to last more than 15 minutes or so. That's long enough to save your work or send any last-minute emails before losing your connection, but not much more.

Keep connected and stay safe

Maintaining your internet connection is important when the power goes out, particularly if you're using it for information or communication, but safety comes first. Always use caution when dealing with electrical equipment, and avoid tampering with any internet lines coming into your home.

For more tips on how to make the most of your home internet connection, check out the CNET Home Internet hub page . Be sure to visit the CNET Home Energy and Utilities page for more info related to your home’s power supply.
